When Abe - a young man with dreams of belonging - went to live in his parents' country, he went to his family's village and had a tomb built in the churchyard for future use. Life went on, with work, children, schooling. Three decades later the tomb was still unoccupied when, during the civil war, the cemetery was destroyed. Abe's grandchildren joined the saga of emigration and started to become familiar with its pattern. In the twentieth century none of their ancestors - on their father's side as well as their mother's - spent their whole life in the same country. The different cemeteries in which each of them ended up indicated the itinerary of that saga.

In an evocative series of reminiscences and personal recollections, Abe tries to approach the inner worlds of immigrants seeking to belong while still navigating in the middle of 'Nowhere'.

I was particularly enlightened by her descriptions of her brother's, former Senator George Allen, violent, hostile, even sociopathic personality. These sections completely and utterly presaged George Allen's violence, hostility and ultimate meltdown on the campaign trail.

The Personal Football Book.......2004-02-24

As an avid football fan, George Allen is one of the greatest NFL Coaches of all time. Throughout the book, Jennifer Allen describes they storybook life of an NFL coach from a footbal and personal perspective. George's rough-and-tough attitude made two winningless teams, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Redskins, into champions. However, his personality as a coach effected his role as a father, which created tension between him and his children. As the his only daughter, Jennifer tries to win her father's affection as she struggles of being a product of an NFL coach and well-known celebrity.

Not what I was expecting........2004-01-08

As a lifelong football fan I was hoping that "Fifth Quarter" would include more about football than Allen puts into her memoir. However, the book is well-written and engaging. If you're looking for a book about George Allen, this isn't really the book to read. However, if you're looking for an interesting book detailing the childhood of a coach's daughter, "Fifth Quarter" might be the book for you.

What a depressing Whine-fest.......2001-11-05

This entire story could have been written on the cover of a matchbook and saved me the time I wasted reading it. Endless complaining about her parents and siblings, If the peoples identities had been with held until the end, one might have expected to find out this was the childhood of a serial killer or some one else you might have expected to have a miserable childhood. Why would anyone even bother to write a book about people she seemed to care for as little as her family is beyond me except to possibly capitalize on her Dad's famous name and make a few bucks. A depressing read.

This is a chick book, not a sports book.......2001-02-20

I was misled by a review in SI that said this was a great book. If you're an Oprah fan, then it's a great book. If you want to learn about the life of an NFL coach, the Washington Redskins or football in general, you're better off buying a subsciption to Sports Illustrated or reading the sports page.

About 80 percent of this book is about the struggle of the writer to get her father's attention and approval. Another 10 percent has to do with her mother, her brothers and the writer's life away from her house. Maybe 10 percent has to do with football. It is a maddening experience to put up with the "I was a girl, girls weren't important to my dad, someone please pay attention to me" anecdotes and thoughts in the hope of getting to, say, the Washington Redskins' 1972 season where the team finally made it to the Super Bowl, and then when you get there have Jennifer Allen say in almost these exact words, "I don't remember much about that the season the Redskins went to the Super Bowl." I almost hurled the book across the room.

It is unfortunate that George Allen essentially ignored his family in his obsessive quest to do what he believed he was born to do: coach. No kid should have to grow up with that kind of home life, and it's obvious that her father's inattention has left its mark on Ms. Allen. But darn it, this is an Oprah book of the month selection, not a sports book. Someone should be clear on that!

A few words about George Allen ... I am about Jennifer Allen's age. I am a lifelong Redskins fan and grew up in D.C. When Mr. Allen took the team to the Super Bowl, it was a highlight of my young life. I remember him licking his fingers, tugging his hat and mentioning milk as his drink of choice. I had no idea that he ignored his family. I'm sorry he did that, but I am also grateful that the man came to my hometown and coached my favorite team and finally made it a winner. I wish the book had a little more about what made George Allen such a successful coach and a lot less about the struggle of a little girl to get close to her daddy.

But if you have some understanding of film history, and world history, this book is totally without parallel.

Andre de Toth tells it like it was.

Frank, no nonsense, no sugar coating.

Read this LAST out of any "golden era Hollywood" books to learn what it was really about.

The definitive book on Business dynamics !
It may look dificult to follow, but it isn`t really easy to read and follow !
The cd brings good examples.

Sterman's book is far and away the best and most comprehensive book on system dynamics for business. Although the title is "Business Dynamics" it really is a text on applying system dynamics to both business and larger social issues/systems.

If you are a strong student of business and systems then this is the book for you. It is highly recommended if you are interested in learning the most you possibly can regarding system dynamics and how to model systems. However, if you are searching for an introduction to this area - watch out. The book is actually quite advanced - it is used at MIT and other graduate business programs at top universities.

What is amazing about this book is that it blends absolute precision, correctness and detail with practical modeling advice and insight and it is written in a relaxed style with numerous examples. It is one of the best examples of clear writing about a complex topic. Dr. Sterman's years of system work has allowed him a level of clarity that is unsurpassed in the business and systems area.

As mentioned earlier, the book can be overwhelming and I would recommend a newcomer to this area to pick up several books first, to provide a more gentle introduction. This is not a contradiction of what I wrote earlier, it is simply that the book packs so much information in its pages, and it is still very long.

I am writing in from India. I have been interested in Systems thinking/ system dynamics for about a year since I read an interesting consulting engagement in Europe that received an award from Management Consultants International (MCI). It's difficult to find a book that shows you the how and why of systems dynamics and its history and relevancy.

Its written by a leader in the field who very well knows what he is writing. The content is clear and has quite some depth for the discerning reader.

It comes with a software. However, unlike another book that I am reading, the sole purpose of this book doesn't seem to be using the software but in helping understand this field as a very good teacher would teach. This book has it all !!!

The story of Edgar Cayce and other people with parapsychological ability is a most compelling and interesting phenomenon of mental capacity. That some people have this type of psychic ability demonstrates the vast power and perception of the human mind that warrants investigation. That this type of phenomena doesn't necessarily "fit" into mainstream psychological study causes severe conflict with generally accepted mainstream beliefs about the workings of the mind. As a consequence, the field of orthodox study tends to put people like Cayce into the catagory of fakes and charletans, at worst, and to ignore them at best. The study of this type of psychic phenomenon would go far in explaining the unknown regions of the mind. Scientific discovery necessitates following examples that are exceptions to the general rule. People with parapsychological powers ala Cayce provide great opportunity to track the great uncharted regions of the human psyche.

A Prophet and Remarkable man.......2000-04-07

One has to consider the time this occurred and the level of education of Edgar Cayce. He was incredible and I find it sad that people reading it today are unable to grasp the importance of his work. I think this is a book all thinking people should read and understand in context. If a reader is too literally minded or unwilling to accept the possibility of miracles then (s)he should read something else.

Very Puzzling life and book, successful cures from trance?.......1999-01-13

Although there is impressive testimony that many of Edgar Cayce's medical treatments proved to be successful, and are still used today, in one form or another, it boggles the scientific mind to be able to accept that such cures were imparted to Mr. Cayce through a trance like state of sleep and that during his waking hours he had no knowledge of the meaning or methods of his prescribed cures.There is much mumbo jumbo in the book, involved with trying to explain the meaning of his various predictions about the changes to take place in the world. Due to the vagueness of most of his predictions, one could pick a year and find some thing to apply it to to prove that he had great powers. His greatest supporters in today's world would seem to be the osteopaths who have successfully used his prescriptions and natural alternative treatments to help ailing patients. Would be interesting to hear a report from their view!

Before and during every trial, I refer to this book. It lays out the elements necessary to lay a foundation of mostly any type of evidence and lays out the questions necessary to establish that foundation. It serves as a terrific checklist, not only to learn the rules in law school, but to use them in the courtroom. An absolute must have.

I also recommend Thomas Mauet's Fundamentals of Trial Techniques.

It is lacking in the foundation for more current evidence -- e.g., emails, web pages, etc.

A trial necessity.......2000-08-15

I've been a criminal defense attorney in Alaska for many years, working in areas where I had no one else to talk over my cases with and where the law library consisted of just the state statutes and the Pacific Reporters. The lists of foundational requirements set out in this book have helped me plan direct and cross examinations for trials, and have helped me innumerable times sound intelligent and in control when making objections or in meeting objections. The examples are very helpful. The book is good for law students; it's wonderful for practicing attorneys.

An excellent how-to-book on laying the proper foundations.......1997-09-07

This book is a must for any law student who desires to learn the proper method for laying evidentiary foundations in a court of law. The book contains numerous examples of proper methods of how to enter various evidence items. The book also covers all of the important evidence rules and explains them in a logical useful manner. Highly recommended--I have seen quite a few trial lawyers referring to this book in actual practice

A Virtual Fieldtrip.......2007-01-20

This book is a very informative guide to the wonders of granite mountain tops in the continental United States. It begins with a general introduction to the science of granite domes, how they are were formed in geological time and shaped by glaciers, and the resulting unique ecology and flora. Then Wessels takes us on a tour of the major granite dome peaks of the US, from Acadia National Park in Maine, west to Yosemite. Each chapter in this second section is both travelogue of a climbing adventure Wessels took on the mountain, and nature guide, describing ecological aspects of the mountain. At the end of the book are appendices that provide a more detailed look at the geologic time line of granite peaks, a list of plants that may be found on American granite peaks, a glossary, a selected biography for further reading, and an index. The book is amply illustrated with black and white photographs by Wessels and illustrations by Brian Cohen.

The book is quite enjoyable as well as informative. I found the introductory chapters on geology particularly interesting, as they explain the nature of granite deposits and how granite is different from other types of rocks. Most important, reading the book makes me want to strap on my hiking boots and get out and climb so that I can experience these wonders for myself!

EXCELLANT !!!!.......2002-04-10

First off, I loved this book. I know some will poo poo this book for not being a hardcore geology book, but thats what makes it so good. Mr. Wessells gives a very good geology course limited to the granite outcroppings in the U.S. and he does it so that is is very interesting. At times I felt like I was right there at his side as he described the landscape he was in. I had to limit myself to a chapter a day, though I cheated a couple of times, I could have read it in one sitting. I sure wish my geo classes in college had been this interesting.
Brian Cohen's illustrations are fantastic as well.
My only disappointment was the author's photographs, though that can be forgiven fro writing such a good book. It is now a permanent part of my library.
