Book Description

A major new biography of the Bourn family--one of San Francisco's most influential families.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unknown Wealth.......2007-07-05

I have to say that i am absolutely fascinated by the Bourns. This book which i have not completely finished offers wonderful insight into one of the most influential families of the 19th and 20th centuries. The only thing that the book lacked was photographs. The book should have included photos of the Bourn Mansion in Pacific Heights (San Francisco), and Filoli out in Woodside. Other than those minor details this book was inspiring.

2 out of 5 stars Not Meaty Enough.......2006-12-10

I thought I had left a review but in looking back I haven't, so I will. I was REAL disappointed with this book. I spent a lot of money on it because I was excited to learn about the Bourn's, but the book left me with very little knowledge. Possibly there was no reason to write a book about them, but there just wasn't anything to sink my literary teeth into.

1 out of 5 stars Editing would help........1999-09-28

In his biography of William Bourn I and William Bourn II the author consistantly drifts from the topic.

A prime example is even though William Bourn is in Monte Carlo during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Egan adds to his description of the events in San Francisco the following sentence: "Even after the devestation of an earthquake that would have measured somewhere about 8.25 on the Richter Scale-to be developed in later years by Charles F. Richter of the Claifornia Institute of Technology..."

Unfortunately this quote is not exceptional. If the author stayed with his topic the information Eagan unearthed on this important California family would require half the pages.

Ferol Egan's "Last Bonanza Kings" is a book sorely in need of an editor.

5 out of 5 stars One second to the next makes you a hero.......2007-03-03

Wow. After 29 years it is still vivid to recall those 2 guys neck 'n neck pulling their teams down Front Street in Nome. I woke to the radio alarm clock to get ready for my shift at the airport and heard they were inside of Safety (22 miles East of Nome). I got up and out of the apartment and walked down to Front street, and low and behold, there they were, stumbling, tugging. It was a bright, clear, cold day and the dogs looked so tired! What a hullabaloo that morning!
Mackey relives this and other moments in this book and he brings it all back. Thanks, Dick!

    3 out of 5 stars Mackey Attacks.......2005-02-12

Mackey sums it all up: " People who are content to stand still irritate me. I feel the same way about people in every profession... always try to improve your work... try to be the best you can be."

This is a record of accomplishments of one man who came from New Hamphshire. He was a young, successful entrepreur until an accident changed his life...bankruptcy. He was young, married and a father. He lost it all... but not for long. " I knew nothing about Alaska, but it was as far as I could drive."

Alaska is a better place for men like Mackey. He has left his mark as a Iditarod Hall of Fame. The founder of Coldfoot, AK.
and the list goes on and on.

Mackey, you brag a lot... but it's not really bragging... you did it.

    4 out of 5 stars Self-made man's public autobiography.......2004-02-18

A well written and extremely entertaining autobiography of Dick Mackey who won the Iditarod Race in 1978 by a second. In some ways, the book almost read like the history of Iditarod and as the founder of Coldfoot, Mackey probably won his place in Alaska history. I regards this more like public autobiography because Mackey mostly relates to his public life. What seem to be missing are stuff about his personal life outside of few mentions of his kids and his three wives. It would be bit more interesting to know the man behind his accomplishments and the cost.

But overall, I highly recommended this book about an extraordinary Alaskan who did extraordinary things. As a fellow Alaskan, I hope there will be more chapters to come.

4 out of 5 stars Les Belles-Soeurs: if you understand French, read the book.......2000-11-09

I would rate the book slightly higher. Four and a half stars is closer to the actual mark I would give it, but between "perfect" (five stars) and "great" I would say the book is great (four stars). I just finished this book today in French class; each member of the class each read a different part. It is not a book I would pick for myself, but now that I have read it, I am glad it was in the itinerary. Tremblay's style of writing is keen and neat; he intersperses tragedy with comedy cleverly and without seeming to do so deliberately. He is able to make the characters sound real and each has their own manner of speaking. It seems like they are actually having a conversation that isn't scripted like a movie; the French the characters use is slangy and familiar, leaning toward the absurd at times. It is a humorous absurd though; it makes you laugh as well as think about the nuances of speech. Some people say that French books are boring; I've seen books in French that seem to have a more interesting story than this one. That is only at first glance. This story is deeper and more human, thus it is universal. I recommend this book to anyone who can read French, and I am surprised that I am the first to review this book. It is well-written and saturated with character and personality. It's a good example of what you should be looking for if you are broadening your horizons and are reading more French.

                        Book Description

By turns funny and sad, this delightful memoir of author Daniel B. Pollack recounts the story of a young actor in the 1950s navigating the treacherous waters of show business.

Pollack's dream of becoming an actor is cemented from the moment he wanders into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City's Carnegie Hall. Even though his parents want him to attend college and find a useful profession, Pollack refuses to let his dream languish. After his service in the U.S. Navy, he is offered an apprenticeship at a summer theater in Pennsylvania and officially begins his acting career.

Pollack's early career mistakes lead to his blundering from one lunatic theater job to another. But when he visits Paris in 1957, Pollack quite unexpectedly becomes a working actor and performs alongside such diverse personalities as John Carradine, Jack Lemmon, Tony Randall, Eva Marie Saint, John Huston, and Orson Welles. From his stint in the movie industry, to his return to the New York Theatre scene and the national tour of The Tenth Man, Becoming an Actor in Spite of Myself vividly portrays one man's life-changing experiences in the world of showbiz.

People always remember the times they encounter great service, as well as those encounters that aren't especially pleasant. In Monitoring, Measuring & Managing Customer Service, Fortune 500 consultant Gary Goodman offers advice for ensuring customers recall the former rather than the latter when they think of your company. "Excellence in customer service doesn't come about accidentally," he writes at the outset. He then outlines the basic ingredients that make it an "everyday experience" over the telephone or in person--factors such as an eagerness to solve problems, delivery of performance or satisfaction guarantees, and presentation of unexpected extras. Goodman spells out specific ways to foster such proactive behavior among your work force, along with practical methods that measure their effectiveness. His tips include explicit suggestions for improving communication (i.e., have voice tones crest rather than decline, make sure pronunciation is clear, use "active listening" techniques); checking up on employee conduct (through techniques like customer surveys and direct observation, with the pros and cons of each process examined); and gauging the ultimate effectiveness of these efforts (through detailed assessment procedures for employees, team leaders, and managers). --Howard Rothman

                              Book Description

Excellent customer service does not come about by accident. It is a learnable set of behaviors that can be monitored, measured, and managed. Drawing from his highly successful seminars and training programs, Gary S. Goodman presents a surefire system for building a first-class customer service department. Goodman identifies the behaviors that constitute top-level service, examines the results that kind of service produces, and shows how to measure it in terms of daily customer satisfaction. He provides managers with specific guidelines for developing, sustaining, and rewarding high levels of service from their customer service reps--with emphasis on telephone contact, the primary link to customers for most companies.

At a Call Center environment the Customers Service Representatives (CSR) are measured thru two main factors: Productivity and Quality. This books relates about CSR Quality and how to measure it. Mr. Berry's teach the reader what's the meaning of each evaluated aspect, like: Pitch, professionalism, courtesy, empathy and much more. When you give feedback to a CSR the most important is define with precision the boundaries of these factors.

When I was a newcomer in Call Centres Quality Assurance, this book was like an angel and I could established a QA Evaluating Form since the first read pages. This is not a theory book this is a very practical one!

Even though this is a must-consult book, I highly recommend it to Quality Managers and Analyst who are starting their careers in a Call Center and have to face a CSR for coaching purposes. For those who are pro's this book must be in their "favourites always consulted" bookshelves.

I have read a lot of books on Management, Customer Service and Call Center Management. This is by far the best.

This book gives step by step easy to follow instructions on how to hire the right people and create an excellent training program. The sections on monitoring and measuring service will help you take the mystery out of getting tangible data to evaluate your team.

If you want to know that your customer's are satisfied at the end of every call read this book!

2 out of 5 stars Focused specifically on call center management.......2000-06-21

Goodman's book provides a wealth of information for managing a customer service call center. While some of the content may be transferable to other customer service settings, the majority of the book is directed soley at call center issues, such as telephone skills, call monitoring, etc. I would recommend the book only if you are managing a customer service call center.

                              Book Description

The boy whose stories became Fiddler on the Roof

Sholom Aleichem's favorite childhood memory may have been listening as his father read stories aloud on Saturday nights and a roomful of adults burst out laughing. Sholom wanted to make people laugh, too. At school he became the class clown. At home he imitated even his pious grandmother. But Sholom was also thoughtful. In Russia in the 1800s, life was especially difficult for Jews, and Sholom longed to help his father by finding a legendary hidden treasure. It turned out that Sholom Aleichem's destiny was to give his father a different kind of treasure - one of words and tales that to this day bring laughter to readers around the world.

This taut, focused biography of the young Sholom Aleichem is animated with the artist's quick, brilliant line and richly toned watercolors.

This winner of the Sydney Taylor Book Award for Young Readers is just charming and works on many levels. Mordecai Gerstein's illustrations complement the text perfectly. It is a biography for younger readers; a story reminiscent of a fairy tale with a mean step-mother and a dreams that comes true; and a lesson that you will succeed if you pursue your passion.

Sholom's Treasure is the 2006 winner of the Sydney Taylor Book Award in the Younger Readers Category, presented by the Association of Jewish Libraries for the best in Jewish children's literature. The subtitle of this book, "How Sholom Aleichem Became a Writer" accurately describes this childhood portrait of the famous author. From toddlerhood to the teen-age, we learn of the influences on the writer's work, from his shtetl upbringing to his collecting of interesting curses uttered by his stepmother. The story ends with the boy's realization that he will become a writer; his adult life is not depicted. This is not a shortcoming; anyone who has seen Fiddler on the Roof knows who Sholom grew up to be, but this book satisfies our
curiosity as to how he became that person.

This picture book biography is a perfect blend of text and
illustration. The writing is simple and clear, engaging and full of interesting detail and well-placed dialogue. The illustrations are busy, at first glance perhaps too much so; yet further examination reveals that they are incredibly alive and that they perfectly complement and flesh out the text. The use of cartoon-style series of small illustrations interspersed with full-page scenes moves the story along and supports the pacing of the text. Faces and body language are expressive and vivid. Sholom comes to life as a lovable rascal despite the potentially distancing old-fashioned clothing and long side-curls.

Sholom's Jewish identity is unapologetically front and center in this biography. Explanations of Jewish life are not necessary, as the story itself smoothly defines all terms and customs. The Jewish aspects of the story are not coyly told for insiders nor stiffly recited to educate non-Jews, but are described matter-of-factly; Sholom's culture is an integral part of his individuality and of his life story.

This is a vital, engaging, living-and-breathing portrait of one of modern Judaism's most famous and beloved champions. The book stands along beautifully but would also make a perfect introduction to Sholom Aleichem's own works.

Illustrator Mordicai Gerstein never ceases to amuse me. Sometimes his pictures are too loosey-goosey to hold my attention (as with any of the books he's illustrated for Elizabeth Levy) while other times he bowls me over with his originality and spice (as with the adorable "Seal Mother"). I did not, on the outset, have high hopes for "Sholom's Treasure", I admit. Sure I knew the name Sholom Aleichem. That's the fella who wrote the stories that "Fiddler On the Roof" was based on, yes? But how interesting could a children's biography of him be? I'm not a huge biography fan to begin with. Seems to me that most picture book bios are deathly dull David A. Adler-like affairs. The are usually the perfect way to put the kiddies to sleep. Fortunately there are smash-hit artists like Erica Silverman and the aforementioned Mr. Gerstein to put me in my place whenever I think this way. "Sholom's Treasure" is definitely one of Gerstein's best books, helped in no small way by Silverman's skill at winnowing out a slice of the great man's life that makes for a fabulous story. Evil stepmothers, a treasure, hardship, glory, putting a bully in his place, it's all here! Best of all, it's the kind of thing kids will actually want to hear about.

He was born Sholom Rabinowitz and was one of twelve children. He lived in Russia in 1859 and attended kheyder like the other boys. Though a fabulous student, Sholom was also a class clown. Mimicry was his talent though nobody appreciated it as much as he would have liked. In his spare time he and his friend Shmulik would discuss how to locate a treasure that they were sure was buried under a nearby hill. Unfortunately the family had to move soon thereafter and then Sholom's mother died. When his father remarried, the new stepmother was not exactly a kindly sort. Still, Sholom was able to have a fair amount of small adventures and triumphs in his own way. In the end, he realized exactly what kind of treasure it was that he would someday present to his father. He was going to be a writer. An Afterword describes how Sholom spent the rest of his life, the number of works he created (more than six thousand stories, essays, plays and novels) and where and when he died. There is also a particularly well written list of Sources and Archival material used by Silverman to tell this truly interesting tale.

Usually I do not trust award winners. This particular story won the 2006 Sydney Taylor Book Award and so I picked it up with the faintest moue of apprehension gracing my lips. I mean, award winners tend to have one thing in common - they're dull dull deathly deadly dull. And winners of awards for a specific ethnic or religious minority have such a small pool to pull from to begin with that often I find myself deeply disappointed with what I find. "Sholom's Treasure" breaks that rule squarely in two and does so with a kind of manic glee. The glee can be attributed directly to two participants - Silverman and Gerstein. Let's take Silverman for a start. It's really remarkably difficult to take a famous figure, condense their life (or, in this case, a portion of their life) into picture book size with simple words AND give the tale a beginning, a middle, and an end. This she has done beautifully. We read about Sholom wanting to dig up a mysterious treasure so that he could present it to his family. Later, he realizes what the true treasure he could present could be. Along the way we get to read funny little anecdotes, such as the time Sholom copied down his step-mother's insults and curses into a compiled (and alphabetized) dictionary entitled, "The Sharp Tongue of the Stepmother". Little humorous touches like this one give the book a depth that few children's book biographies achieve.

Then there is Mr. Gerstein's work. As I mentioned before, I'm never sure if I'm going to like what he does from book to book. I enjoyed, "The Man Who Walked Between the Towers", but I had a hard time figuring out whether or not the art was good enough for the story. No such wavering exists with "Sholom". Gerstein has given his hero particularly bright blue eyes and some yellow curls that make him easy to find even in group settings. When Sholom is described as mimicking someone, we see split panels where the "victim" does something and then Sholom does the same thing, only goofier. There's a truly enjoyable sequence where Sholom stands fascinated by his stepmother's curses. In brightly colored squares we see each curse turned to its literal visible equivalent. There's a picture of Sholom covered in worms for "May worms eat you!" and Sholom in various pieces for "May you ache and break!". To my chagrin, publishers like Farrar, Straus & Giroux don't seem to care to mention the artistic process their illustrators use to make their pictures on their publication pages anymore. A Publisher's Weekly review once said that the book used pen & ink and watercolor washes to create the pictures. I don't have anything to back this information up with, so I guess we'll just have to trust PW on this one.

The Author's Note at the beginning of the book clears up quite a few misconceptions of its own. I was delighted to find that Sholom's pen name (Sholom Aleichem) was a kind of play on words. He changed his last name to the humorous "Aleichem" so that every time you said his title in full you were basically saying "peace be with you" in Yiddish. I also appreciated that there was a note at the beginning mentioning that, "The dialogue in this book is based on Sholom Aleichem's own words as they appear in his autobiography, `From the Fair'". That's just in case you were worried that Silverman made some of this stuff up.

The book has received two awards as of this review (the aforementioned Sidney Taylor and the New York Public Library's 100 Titles For Reading and Sharing) and has been given glowing reviews by at least nine legitimate review resources. It may sound greedy, but I wish more people knew about it. It's a pity it didn't garner itself a Caldecott Honor, but that's the way it goes sometimes. In any case, it's a lovely little book and an even cleverer pairing of selective story and finely honed artwork. A treasure for people of every culture and persuasion.

5 out of 5 stars A LIFE LESSON IN THIS STORY.......2005-03-05

In an opening author's note Erica Silverman tells of being taken to a Broadway production of "Fiddler On The Roof" by her grandmother. She writes that as she watched the musical she felt she was looking into the world of her grandmother's childhood. When she questioned her grandmother after the playing, saying she wanted to learn more, the reply was "Read Sholom Aleichem." That's on the spot advice for all.

Born in Russia in 1859 as Sholom Rabinowitz, he became known as Sholom Aleichem, "a Yiddish greeting that means `Peace be with you.'" There was very little peace to be found in his turbulent childhood, but as the author notes, although he was quite cognizant of the difficulties and deprivation around him he was somehow able to see humor in almost any situation. And, he believed that "laughter was healthy, even necessary, to survival." Anyone who has seen "Fiddler On The Roof," which is based on his stories knows the truth of that statement.

One of 12 children, Aleichem loved to hear his father read stories, and he thoroughly enjoyed watching the pleasure this gave to others. Evidently, he, too, decided he wanted to make others happy so he became a bit of a clown, an accomplished mimic. However, it wasn't too long before greater hardships visited his small village, Voronko. His father lost his share of a business, and the family moved to Pereyaslav, a veritable city with wooden sidewalks. Once there, his parents bought a rather dilapidated inn.

Two months after Aleichem's bar mitzvah a cholera epidemic enveloped Pereyslav, and his mother died. What would become of his family now?

Erica Silverman has crafted a trenchant, thoughtful biography, and it is illustrated by the incomparable Mordicai Gerstein. Last year's Caldecott Medal winner, his pictures are often humorous, always touching.

We learn that in Aleichem's will he asked that his name "be recalled with laughter." It is - with laughter and gratitude.

                                    Book Description

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, national security concerns have become the focus of the general public and of federal authorities. But some citizens and commentators have criticized the government for using national security as an excuse to curtail civil liberties. Others argue that the gravity of the terrorist threat warrants the increased security measures that have been implemented even if civil liberties must be compromised. Should the government be able to encroach on its citizens' freedoms in the name of national security? Should all citizens be willing to give up some constitutional rights to protect the nation?

This timely and balanced discussion by leading experts on the trade-offs between national security and civil liberties is divided into six informative sections addressing the main issues of this crucial debate:

The history of civil liberty issues in wartime
Domestic surveillance and the USA PATRIOT Act
                                    Racial profiling
The use of torture in confessions
                                    The designation of "enemy combatants"
PLUS recent developments, such as the Abu Ghraib prison scandal

In addition to excerpts from important recent US Supreme Court decisions on these topics, this volume includes selections from such widely recognized and respected authors as Richard Cohen, Alan M. Dershowitz, Viet D. Dinh, David A. Harris, Nat Hentoff, Philip B. Heymann, Aryeh Neier, Christian Parenti, John T. Parry, Eyal Press, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, Stephen J. Schulhofer, Jay Stanley, Barry Steinhardt, Stuart Taylor Jr., Welsh S. White, Frank H. Wu, and John C. Yoo.

This intriguing collection of expert opinion from across the political, legal, and philosophical spectrums will appeal to readers interested in determining for themselves the acceptable level of infringement on individual freedom in this vital conflict between civil liberties and national security.

5 out of 5 stars An accessible and basic analysis of the issues.......2006-11-13

This book gives an excellent review of the many issues presently being debated concerning the balance between civil liberties and an effective national security. The essays that the editors have chosen are concise and cogent arguments for the different positions. It is very easy to pick up and read one essay at a time right before bed. Overall, a worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in an accessible analysis of the divergent viewpoints on this issue. While not the most in depth book available, it definitely gives a decent analysis of the key issues from racial profiling to torture to surveillance. Recommended for those with an interest in this debate.

Nancy Chang of the Center for Constitutional Rights examines how the USA Patriot Act endows the executive branch of the U.S. government with vast unchecked powers, erodes civil liberties and privacy, and impacts the lives of immigrants.

1 out of 5 stars The outrageous bias renders this book unbelievable..........2005-04-29

I suspect that the author of "Silencing Political Dissent" (Nancy Chang) is sincere and has good intentions. But the book is a gross overreaction to laws that have been passed since 9/11.

Even worse, Chang's obvious, sometimes vicious (or so it seems to me), blatant bias against the current administration renders the contents of the book completely unbelievable (and, quite frankly, laughable).

The fact is that I DO dissent, and I do so without fear. Thus how can I possibly believe Chang's assertions? No. Scare tactics, whether from the far-left or from the far-right, do not affect me.

I would NOT recommend this book to a friend.

Of course, this review (including all of the above paragraphs) is merely my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Relevant to the times.......2005-03-02

Nancy Chang's book, Silencing Political Dissent, becomes increasingly relevant with the re-election of this administration and recent security breaches with commercial databases. Ms. Chang predicted in 2002 that "With the advent of electronic record-keeping, the FBI is likely to maintain far more dossiers on law-abiding individuals and to disseminate the dossiers far more widely than during the COINTELPRO era." Commerical database companies are composing life pictures of individuals which are then sold to other businesses as well as government entities which might otherwise be restricted in the information collected.

5 out of 5 stars Implications of the Patriotic Act.......2005-01-30

Nancy Chang's Silencing Political Dissent is a brilliant look into US history and current political agendas. Through her analysis of the Patriot Act , Chang is able to suggest to the reader the ways in which the newly militarized government is attempting to gain more power and less accountability through silencing the public and being secretive. The Patriot Act takes away constitutional rights and makes the fourth amendment null and void. This book allows the reader to look at the current "war on terror" in comparison to some historical events. Chang conveys the importance of this act by allowing the reader to imagine the implications that rightful protest could be considered terrorism and a person could be denied due process because of race, religion, or ethnicity. Most importantly, this book outlines the many steps that have been taken to deny rights to people showing a disregard for democracy and all that our country stands for.

                                          Book Description

Despite his status as a scion of one of the wealthiest and most famous families in the United States and an enormously successful businessman in his own right, Laurance S. Rockefeller is unknown to all but a small circle of Americans. Yet while he has been neither Vice President nor Governor nor chairman of the world's largest bank, his contribution to society has been at least as great as that of his more famous brothers.

In Laurance S. Rockefeller: Catalyst for Conservation, noted historian Robin W. Winks brings Laurance to the forefront, offering an intimate look at his life and accomplishments. While Rockefeller has played a vital role in the business world as one of the most astute venture capitalists of our time-providing seed money for, among other endeavors, Eastern Airlines, Intel Corporation, and Apple Computers-his driving passion throughout his life has been the environment. In addition to the millions of dollars he has donated and the numerous conservation organizations he has helped to found, he served under five consecutive presidents in environmental advisory capacities.

Perhaps most significantly, Rockefeller served under Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy as chairman of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission (ORRRC), brilliantly orchestrating an assessment of the recreation and conservation needs and wants of the American people and the policies and programs required to meet those needs. The reports issued by the Commission represent a groundbreaking achievement that laid the framework for nearly all significant environmental legislation of the following three decades.

Winks uses a combination of historical insight and extensive access to Rockefeller and government archives to present the first in-depth examination of Laurance Rockefeller's life and work. His deftly argued and gracefully written volume explains and explores Rockefeller's role in shaping the transition from traditional land conservation to a more inclusive environmentalism. It should compel broader interpretation of the history of environmental protection, and is essential reading for anyone concerned with the past or future of conservation in America.

From early childhood, Laurance S. Rockefeller was deeply interested in nature and conservation. Influenced by his family's long history of philanthropy, Rockefeller has used his considerable fortune to support environmental goals, even making conservation and historical preservation his life's work. Now 87, he is the subject of Robin W. Winks's biography, Laurance S. Rockefeller: Catalyst for Conservation. Over the years, Rockefeller has donated undisclosed millions of dollars to support national parks and establish historic sites. Winks suggests that his greatest contribution, however, was the time he spent as chairman of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission in the 1950s. During that time, many of the programs in place today that protect against pollution and designate federally protected wilderness areas were first proposed. Winks's sympathetic portrayal of an old-school philanthropist provides insight into both the conservationist movement in America today and the life of an extraordinary man.
