Book Description
Queen Victoria's death in January 1901 shook Britain to its core, and reverberated not just throughout the Commonwealth, but around the world. She was a woman in her eighties, and yet it seems no one could contemplate the end of a reign that had lasted so long. Most could not remember a time when she was not Queen, and the very stability of everyday life seemed to depend on her regency. The anxiety of the government and the royal family about the prospect of the Queen's death was such that the news of her illness was deliberately concealed from the public for more than a week. When it came, people from England to Jamaica wept in the streets, and this grief was surpassed only by fear for the future. "God help us" was the standard reaction from all strata of society.
Last Days of Glory is the definitive account of those last 23 days in January 1901, when Victoria traveled to Osborne House to die. The momentous reaction to the Queen's passing attached to it more significance and a greater sense of change than the turn of the century had carried just a year earlier. Through the prism of those last days Tony Rennell presents us with a series of resonant and absorbing snapshots of a fading Empire at the end of the Victorian Age, and captures a nation coping with change, balancing comfortable nostalgia with the arrival of a new order.

Ending the Era that Bears Her Name.......2006-11-27
I like a book that is focused and keeps its tone throughout. With content like this I'm sure it took discipline to weed out the many stories of people and events that brought the world to this date. For instance, just enough is devoted to the Kaiser and John Brown is appropriately dealt with in the appendix. The tone stays the same through the final days, to the funeral preparations and then the funeral ritual itself.
It had been so long since a monarch's death, that no one could remember the protocol. There were big issues and smaller decisions. How to inform the populace? How long should a mourning period last? (Various aspects of the economy had to be considered.) Would Edward hire the Queen's personal staff? Hymns had to be chosen, and a favorite had to yield to the politically correct one of the time. So many outpourings from at home and abroad. Special request floral designs. Visiting dignitaries. What to call the Princess of Wales before installation? QV left very detailed instructions, but soon to be installed King Edward now had the veto.
Rennell gives us all the above and more. He sticks with his topic and brings together all the pertinent material. Very good job.
Not good -- better books out there!.......2006-05-31
Basically this book is just an overview of the last three weeks of Queen Victoria's life, and not very interestingly written either, being rather simplistic and jumping back & forth in style.
For a much more comprehensive and fascinating view of Queen Victoria's last days, I recommend "Ask Sir James" by Michaela Reid, which is a biography of Ms. Reid's grandfather, Sir James Reid, Queen Victoria's doctor. Despite its being a book not strictly about Queen Victoria, "Ask Sir James" is really chock full of interesting information and tidbits of personal history regarding the last 20-odd years of the Queen's life, her personality and her health, and is a much better and more interesting book than "Last Days of Glory". Don't waste your money on Rennell's book; go to the source it's based on!
Interesting insight into Victorian society.......2003-10-31
A surprisingly entertaining book. Surprisingly because Rennell writes quite a dry book, not sensationalising the story of Victoria's death, or attempting to get too personal. Rather, he takes the reader through Victoria's last days, her death and the funeral, relating aspects from the point of view of those close to Victoria and the press. He never directly writes political analysis, but rather hints at it, only occasionally drawing parallels with the modern British monarchy. By taking one small episode - lasting only a year really - Rennell manages to explore various facets of Victorian life and it's legacy.
The most striking point in this book is the fact that no-one seemed prepared for Queen Victoria's death, which is amazing considering the woman was in her eighties! But it also entertainingly covers the small facts - the internal squabbles within the large and extended royal family; the fact the Queen was a bit of a glutton until her final illness; the boy who flicked a match and set fire to a man's hat while the public watched the funeral procession move through London. Rennell manages to steer a course between the academic and the `dumbing down' sometimes prevalent in modern day `popular history'. Rather, he just sticks to the facts and supposes his readers are intelligent enough to understand and interpret them.
A glorious effort..........2003-08-18
When I first saw that this book was published, I was skeptical that enough information could be gathered about Queen Victoria's death to make for interesting reading. Was I wrong! The Last Days of Glory: The Death of Queen Victoria by Tony Rennell contains not just lots of interesting information, but also all the high drama required of a good Victorian novel. The cast of characters is unbelievable. They include: 1. a robust queen whose rapidly failing health is kept from her public until the last minute 2. a reluctant heir who would rather go fox hunting and spend time with his mistresses than attend his mother's deathbed or assume the throne 3. a passel of children and grandchildren who hover about and argue with each other 4. an obnoxious, arrogant and overbearing grandson (Kaiser William II) trying to make nice with his British cousins (who all loathe him) while trying to muscle his way into the death scene 5. a personal doctor who is second guessed at every opportunity, is never allowed to physically examine the queen and who serves as a spy to the Kaiser 6. a bishop who tries to interject too much "churchiness" into the death scene and is finally asked to leave 7. a head dresser who has promised the queen to sneak a large number of objects and mementos into the queen's coffin (without her family's knowledge) including several from the queen's devoted Scottish servant, John Brown (also rumored to be her secret husband) 8. a large number of heads of state who scheme and plot and politic against each other at the funeral, even though most of them are related to each other 9. an Empire of British subjects who have never known another sovereign and 10. a large group of faithful but bumbling government officials who have no clue how to bury the old monarch or install the new one because they haven't had to worry about such things for over 63 years.
Add to this story a lost effigy for the burial sarcophagus and over 100 daily newspapers scrapping for every little tidbit of information, and you have a saga most fiction writers could only dream about. To make the story even more interesting, we learn about the changes in the Empire and the world during the course of Victoria's reign. Telegrams have revolutionized communication, telephones are in their infancy, and no one really believes that the new horseless carraiges will become popular because they're too expensive. Queen Victoria's death takes place at the dawn of a new millennium, so the end of the 19th Century and the end of the Victorian Era occur together. Also, the British Empire will never again be as great or as grand as it was during Victoria's reign. It all makes for fascinating reading.
The only flaw I could find in The Last Dayas of Glory involved a historical fact. The Russian Tsar and Tsarina, Nicholas and Alexandra (Victoria's favorite granddaughter) got married after Nicholas became tsar and not before. But other than this minor error, I find no fault here. Tony Rennell's book is a nice surprise and well worth reading.
Tells of a watershed event, now almost forgotten........2002-07-23
Few of us will ever forget the events of September 11, where we were, how the nation reacted. Tony Rennell tells us of another earthshattering event, for its time, the death of Queen Victoria.
Beginning a few days before the Queen's death, Rennell proceeds slowly through her final illness, providing enough background to satisfy us without boring us. After the Queen passes, he gives us ample reaction to the death, even printing (rather pompous by today's standards) poems and songs written at the time (interesting to compare them with the songs written after September 11). He brings us through the funeral and burial at Windsor.
Rennell tells us what was not widely known before--that Victoria was buried holding a picture of John Brown and a locket with his hair, and wearing a ring he had given her. He is careful to put this in the proper context, devoting an appendix to setting forth his view that Brown and the Queen had an entirely proper, though unconventional, relationship.
Rennell puts the event in historical perspective--the conflict between those who wanted a "proper" amount of mourning, and those who wanted to move on quickly, reopen the theaters, put off mourning dress. I wonder how long it has been since the general public wore mourning for a monarch, and if there will be any expectation that it be done next time. Yet in 1901, the period of public mourning was shortened to "only" six weeks!
This book was published before 9/11, but I wonder, if, in 2101, a similar book will be published to remind the public of our watershed event.
Well worth reading.

A PO5 fan "must read!".......2000-02-26
If you love PO5 as much as I do (which beleve me is a alot!) this is the book that you should read. It gives you the inside scoop on the show and the stars and also includes tons of quizzes and an episode guide. So if your smart (which you must be if you decide to watch PO5) read this book now!
Fabulous Book, I really enjoy it!.......1998-11-08
I think that this book was really good, probably because I am a po5 fan! It has good information that I didn't ever know about. I recommend it, and any other party of five books!
This book is outstanding!.......1998-11-06
The Author of this book should be very proud! I mean I thought I was a fan and then I read this book and I realized so much I didn't know! This book has shown me how I can dedicate and try to make this show more popular by supporting it!! Read it, it's GREAT!
A great source of knowledge for all P05 fans........1998-08-31
It has bios of all the stars and guests, recaps of all the episodes of the first three seasons, behind the scenes info./pics, plus tons of other great stuff!
It's okay, kind of........1998-08-05
Pro's: It was interesting to read about the actors and their were plenty of interesting photos. I like reading the comments from the actors on certain episodes.
Cons: The episode guide was good, but it was something I could care less about. I wanted to see more behind the scenes facts and this book gave me what I already knew. Also the quiz at the end was impossible. I've been watching the show since it started, and the questions are based on details that are impossible for even me to remember and the only way you'd remember them is if you taped each episode and/or took notes from each episode. I read what the other people said about the book and thought it would be great, instead it was a dissappointment.
Over all: Don't get this book unless you are a NEW fan and don't know anything. Also don't even try the quiz!

A Good A to Z Guide to Argentine Tango .......2007-07-23
When you first discover this dance, as I recently did, you can easily become overtaken by its intricacy in physical, musical, and cultural ways and find yourself longing for anything or anyone who can explain it or put it into some context. Pellicoro starts with a brief, clear description of the history of the dance, putting it into the context of the cultural climate of Argentina in the late nineteenth century and showing how it spread to Europe, the U.S., and Asia.
His chapter on the different styles of tango is well written and makes it clear that as the dance spread around the globe, some cultures made only minor alterations, and some changed it so much that their versions became completely different dances which still use the name tango. This would include the British style, which in its emphasis on power and presence and efficient mechanics of movement, has become more widespread than any other style. It also includes American style with its flare suited to stage and screen productions. Then you can see how the Argentine style has all of these things but it emphasizes intimacy, passion, and emotion. Once you are clear about this, you are ready to see the different styles of Argentine tango, and these are presented well.
After some photographic descriptions of basic steps, Pellicoro steps off the stage and includes chapters written by other tango dancers, the first three of which are women. If, like me, you are new to leading, it is certainly essential to become completely tuned in to how women, or followers think and feel about tango. They also shed some light on the etiquette and social customs of the dance.
In the chapter called "The Stars of Tango", you can read bios and interviews of some of the world's most influential tangueras and tangueros. The history of tango is still so much in the making, that the older masters who are still alive can still link us back to earlier times, even to the golden age of tango from the late thirties to the fifties. When I recently met Nito and Elba, one of the famous couples who are interview in the book, I felt I had some familiarity with their lives, their dancing, and their relationship, so I was able to ask them good questions to find out more about them and their views on tango.
I recommend this book as a way of getting started, finding out where to dance all over the world, knowing what to wear, how to act, and how to get started learning. Then you should continue exploring, reading early Argentine books on tango, talking to Argentine, dancers, finding teachers who make your blood flow faster in your veins, and getting out to milongas, or tango parties, which are probably happening in your city.
Not As Good As Tango The Dance The Story.......2007-01-11
As a tango dancer who has been to Argentina to study the dance this is not the best book for history, connection, and understanding where the dance came from.
A "must" for all tango dance enthusiasts!.......2002-05-12
Paul Pellicoro On Tango is a comprehensive guide to the Argentine Tango dance, written by expert instructor Paul Pellicoro -- who is the man that taught and choreographed the tango scene for Al Pacino in the popular movie "Scent of a Woman." Individual chapters embrace the philosophy that anyone can learn the tango, and address everything from dance steps to what to wear to working in harmony with one's partner. An extensive lists of top-class places to go to for tango dancing around the world rounds out this superb instructional for dance enthusiasts. Paul Pellicoro On Tango is a "must" for all tango dance enthusiasts!

Book Description
The Vietnam War was remarkable for the number of unsuccessful initiatives to end it through negotiation and the active involvement of noncombatant nations seeking peace. The analyses and conclusions gathered in this volume focus on the domestic and international sources of such efforts, as well as the relationship of these attempts to the Cold War.
On the domestic front, contributors look at peace initiatives from the Johnson Administration and consider the place of larger American diplomatic philosophies in shaping the U.S. options. On the international front, scholars examine the role of Canada, France, Japan, India, China, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union in proposing, furthering, or blocking negotiations. Finally, they consider the positions of the Vietnamese themselves.
Although unsuccessful in ending the conflict, these efforts were important in shaping both U.S. politics and the international relations that prevailed in later years. The Search for Peace in Vietnam, 1964-1968 offers new perspectives on a conflict that, arguably, continues to shape the American presence in the world.

Book Description
Has America, in its quest for goodness, sacrificed its sense of greatness? In this sharp-witted, historically informed book, veteran political observer Alan Wolfe argues that most Americans show greater concern with saving the country's soul than with making the nation great.
Wolfe castigates both conservatives and liberals for opting for small-mindedness over greatness. Liberals, who at their best insisted on policies of national solidarity, have convinced themselves that small is beautiful, prefer multiculturalism to one nation, and are mistrustful of executive political power. Conservatives, who once embraced strong, active central government and an ideal of national citizenship, now support huge tax cuts that undermine America's future ability to undertake any ambitious, long-term project at home or abroad.
No great society, in Wolfe's view, has ever been built on the cheap. Wolfe notes that neither the conservatives' call for small-scale faith-based initiatives nor the recent embrace on the left of a grassroots "civil society" can provide health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans or ensure national security in an age of terrorism.
To find better solutions, Wolfe looks back at specific moments in our national experience, when, in the face of sharp resistance, aspirations for the idea of national greatness shaped American history. He demonstrates how a bold and ambitious political agenda, championed at various times by Alexander Hamilton, John Marshall, Abraham Lincoln, and the two Roosevelts, steered the country toward periods of national strength and unity.
Steeped in a colorful, panoramic reading of history, Return to Greatness offers a fresh take on American national identity and purpose. A call to action for a renewed embrace of the ideal of an activist federal government and bold policy agendas, it is sure to become a centerpiece of national debate.
Customer Reviews:
What's the choice? Liberty or Greatness?.......2005-06-08
This is a wonderful book, clear, concise, logical and properly infuriating for anyone concerned about the current state of the nation.
It's based on a simple premise: liberals believe government authority, policies and incentives have guided America's destiny into greatness. The neoconservative rebuttal is that America's destiny is based on not meddling in the lives of ciizens and not becoming involved in foreign nation building.
Wolfe doesn't endorse the neoconservative view. He writes, "As it takes the personal courage of a Teddy Roosevelt or a John McCain to become a great American leader, itr takes intellectual courage to propose great ideas for Amerca, such as the courage to insist that sometimes government is necessary and the taxes to finance its activities a small price to pay for the results it can achieve or the courage to do what is right for future generations rather than what is most likely to garner votes in the very next election."
It's based on an assumption that people are either basically evil or good. Liberals believe in basic goodness; conservatives believe in basic evil and punishment to instill respect and morality. Wolfe writes "The hope-filled language of the Reagan and Kennedy administrations finds no place among men like Vice President Dick Cheney, who are convinced that forces of darkness rule the world and must be met head-on with iron resolve. Suspicion and fear guide this administration, not confidence and generosity."
True enough. Do you trust the government? If so, this book outlines in chilling detail the intellectual underpinnings of how and why the Bush administration wants to reverse almost everything the US government has achieved since 1860.
If you don't trust the government, this book outlines heart-warming reasons of how and why "Bush is the first Republican president to make libertarianism the centerpiece of his presidency." The express goal of massive budget and trade deficits is to make sure the US "is unlikely to possess for decades the financial wherewithal to achieve any of the objectives its leaders set out to realize."
To understand this antiu-government attitude, it's worth understanding the "Old Confederacy" was born the moment Gen. Robert E. Lee offered his sword to Gen. U.S. Grant at Appomattox; thus began the legend of states' rights. As Wolfe explains, "A hundred years ago, Southerners voted overwhelmingly for a party that stood against the idea of a strong America. Now they continue to do exactly that."
The result, Wolfe writes, is "the stronger American conservativism becomes, the weaker America will be." In this wonderfully liberal view of conservative ideas, a strong state dominates and controls its citizens, taxing them heavily to finance its domestic experiments, foreign adventures and imperial greatness. Does the powerful national unity and sense of purpose implied by the slogal "Ein volk, ein reich, ein fuhrer" ring a bell?
It's been said of John Milton, who wrote 'Paradise Lost' to praise God and condemn Satan, that he inadvertently created a heroic Devil because of Milton emphasized his very human insistence on individuality instead of meek submission to God.
In his praise of America, Wolfe likewise writes, "Greatness, which has always been the exception rather than the rule in the American experience, must be willed into being over the objections of all those forces that benefit from the individualistic culture, decentralized political structure, and profit-seeking opportunities that dominate everyday American life." Take your choice . . . . individuality or greatness.
It puts Wolfe right up there with Milton.
Greatness=Fascism.......2005-05-31
Like beauty, greatness is in the eye of the beholder. Alan Wolfe's concept of greatness sharply differs from this reviewer's view of greatness. While he claims to be a "Liberal" Kerry voter, he does not promote the classical liberal thought of a Lockean, and is intolerant of other views of greatness. Rather, like many of today's "progressives" his "Liberalism" is a perversion. It calls for a strong coercive government that destroys any existence of individualism. His heros are Alexander Hamilton, John Marshall, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt. What makes them heros is that they all succeed in increasing the power of the central government while actively ignoring the true intent of the US Constitution. The obligations that one has towards his fellow citizens are not self imposed, but are decided by and enforced by a strong central government bureacracy.
Indeed, Wolfe's idealogy is highly nationalisic and intolerant. It is basically a fascist ideal where the will and the identity of the individual is destroyed. Greatness (as opposed to goodness) comes from government strength. Wolfe's desired Leviathan could easily violate the basic freedoms that many have given their lives to defend.
This reviewer believes that both America's goodness and greatness have come from her people, and not from government force or military might. Without the force of government, the great Americans of yesterday and today freely place restrictions on themselves in order to improve life for themselves and their fellow world citizens. America's great people come from all walks of life. She is a school teachers, business owner, a loving parent, a little league players, or she is just an infirmed lady who can rise above her own pains to freely give some of what little money she has to the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia. If she were forced to give of herself as Wolfe would advocate, then she has lost her right to be good, generous, and helpful.
Greatness comes from within the individual and can never be imposed by government power. A country can never be great if its citizens are treated as livestock, and this is the reason that Wolfe's vision fails. If his vision is ever implemented, the US will go the way of many failed regimes such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and many innocent lives will be lost along the way.

An excellent book well worth study and reading.......2003-07-02
The greening of Georgia is a valuable book for people who want to understand the changes of the environment in Georgia in the last century. The book is a clearly written historical ecology of the large region of the Southeastern United States found in the boundaries of Georgia. The book is also an argument that the environment in Georgia is better in the present than it was in the past. To marshal this argument Professor Brown appeals to the data from known sources rather than to improper appeals to authority. Figures 1.1, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 5.1, 5.2, 5.9, 5.10 and 6.1 are worthy of thoughtful consideration by every reader. Students who wish to learn how to explain scientific data in an honest and effective way should consult this book. In practice the book carries out the principles of honest graphical presentation of data explained by Edward Tufte in "The visual display of quantitative information." The figures tell a clear and relatively straightforward story of advances in the well being of the people of Georgia. The author deftly and accurately chronicles the economic conditions in Georgia in the early 20th century, which went hand in hand with the destruction of the topsoil (in many locations) and the sedimentation of the streams and rivers. Dr. Brown also chronicles the changes in air and water quality and wildlife populations with specific examples. The author does not ignore data that appear to be evidence against his hypothesis. In this regard, the discussion of the decline in bobwhite quail populations is excellent. The author presents a many of the themes of his book in his elegant poem, "Eternal Chattahoochee" on the page at the Start of Chapter 1. The author describes the forces that changed the environment for the better in Georgia. Professor Brown presents a compelling, objective history that should be read by folks with and without scientific training. It is an honest evaluation of the changes in the environment in Georgia. One expects that this story is not limited to Georgia but is true for much of the United States as well. Overall, "The greening of Georgia" is a good book worthy of study and consideration. It is a hopeful story as well.
The Greening of Georgia.......2002-12-13
The following was relayed to me about the book:
Harold Brown is Professor Emeritus of Plant Sciences at UGA.
This book clearly makes the point that Georgia's environment in nearly every way is far healthier, less polluted, and better managed today than 100 years ago. Every point is made with loads of data and the book is fully footnoted and referenced for those who are skeptical or wish further reading.
Authoritative work by a true authority.......2002-08-13
From the top of his 40-yr experience in research in plant physiology and its responses to the environment, Professor R. Harold Brown, world renowned authority, presents a comprehensive treatise on the environment in Georgia. Outstanding writing, by an outstanding author and scientific journal editor. Too bad not all can appreciate it.
Greening of Georgia.......2002-06-11
This is a strange book. It seems well-researched with many citations of previously published work but very little original, if any, work. I agree with the premise of the book but find fault with the author, whoever he is, that he does not seem to understand what is going on. Perhaps he's just an old codger like me.
