Book Description
However, his words inspired me with resolution and powers I did not think myself possessed of before. I had naturally a degree of courage, and, as soon as I recovered from my astonishment, I found I was quite an altered person. His address pleased me, and wrought in me a confidence in myself; and I found I was become of more consequence than I had ever conceived I had been.
Customer Reviews:
This is only another edition of Marguerite's memoirs.......2007-10-04
I am quite puzzled by the title of this book - Memoirs and Historical Chronicles of the Courts of Marguerite de Valois, Madame de Pompadour and Catherine de Medici. In fact, this is just the memoirs of Marguerite de Valois, the famous "Queen Margot." In itself, it is a fine book. But the part about Madame de Pompadour and Catherine de Medici???? There are no memoirs of either woman inside. Margot mentions Catherine several times, of course, because Catherine is Margot's mother. Mme. P wasn't even born in the 1500s.

Extremely boring & dull.......2005-01-27
I found this book at a used bookstore and I was so disappointed. I am a RABID gymnasics fan, but this book could not hold my attention at all. It basically chugs along, describing meet after meet after meet after MEET...score after score after score...and the writing was contrived. In the back of the book the author lists her sources, which mainly consist of past articles from International Gymnast magazine and televised gymnastic meets. There's nothing new or fun or exciting in here, and you definitely do not get inside Kim Zmeskal's head to see what motivates her. If you were a fan of gymnasics during Kim's career, you already know everything in here already (except for all the painful recitations of numerous scores from numerous meets which the author dutifully reports). For a REALLY insightful gymnastics biography, read Kerri Strug's book, "Landing on my Feet."
Great Biography!.......2003-02-18
This is the perfect book for all Kim Zmeskal or gymnastics fans. Just like all of Krista Quiner's other gymnastics biographies, this one was excellent! You learn so much about Kim: how she got started in gymnastics, her early competitions: her feelings about Bela Karolyi, and so much more! It allows you to see the hard work and sacrifices someone has to make to succeed in elite gymnastics. The book lets you watch Kim grow from an aspiring gymnast to a role model to many. Great job on writing another fantastic biography, Krista Quiner!
Kim Zmeskal Determination to Win is a winner!.......2000-11-23
Take it from someone who knows this is a great book! i have read it at least 7 or 8 times through, and after this book, you really know everything about this American Gymnast. I honestly became obsessed after reading this book, and although she has now retired many videos are still available of Kim. She was a phenominal gymnast that paved the way for Shannon Miller aand others. This book is great for someone that knows everything about gymnastics, like me, or to someone who knows nothing like when I first read the book. This was the book that got me hooked as her fan, and I recommend it to everyone
This was a great book about this awesome champion........1999-04-03
Kim shows of her style and personalaty in this book. She thrives in exellence in and out of the gym, under the watchful eyes of Bela Karoyili
A GREAT Book!!.......1999-02-07
A very good book about Kim. I enjoyed reading about all of her early competitions. A must read gymnastics book!

Customer Reviews:
Very Thorough Glimpse at Glimpses of Jack the Ripper.......2005-03-15
Denis Meilke has managed to make a very thorough examination of the myriad and varied appearances of Jack the Ripper in movies and television quite an entertaining book. This is a remarkable feat as he details every thing from the times "Ripper" is used in the title of a direct-to-video motion picture to make the mere suggestion of Jack the Ripper to the times when the historical figure makes the bizarre leap into the future on a television show, such as his appearance on the original Star Trek, as well, of course, on the movies based directly on the actual crimes, such as From Hell. Through all of this, the author gives descriptions of the movies, both as entertainment and as ways of seeing the true history of the crimes. The reader will learn much of interest and be amused by the author's opinions.

Bob Marley is one of the most legendary artists of our time - his music continues to inspire, both in its protest engagement, and the sense of empowerment his songs give. However, among the masses of people congregating around the reggae-culture movement, appreciable knowledge of the essence of his life, music and message is rare. This book is not just another facts-and-figures folio but a serious appraisal of the meaning and purpose of those songs, and interpretations.

With three World Series Championships under his belt in four years, who better to give advice on managing than the most beloved and successful manager of the New York YankeesJoe Torre. Customer Reviews:
Not an average Joe.......2003-11-08
I've only heard audio portions of this book so far and I've enjoyed it immensely. I'm a huge Yankee fan and I love the way Joe manages them - and George Steinbrenner for that matter; calm, clear, focused, patient. However, I just wanted to respond to Bill from NY, who said that Joe Torre can not write and that the book wasn't very "inciteful".
Note to Bill: buy a dictionary before you "right" off a review in haste.
Good Advice.......2003-08-04
This book offers good advice for managers of most professions. It may be simplistic to say that the baseball industry strategies will apply to all areas, but one of the first things you learn IS that it will apply to most areas -- because it deals with one long-time commonality -- people. Joe Torre shows that his insight and respect for others really does work and that it is NOT just money.
Useful examples that can be applied to many situations.......2001-11-24
Read JOE TORRE'S GROUND RULES FOR WINNERS:
12 KEYS TO MANAGING TEAM PLAYERS, TOUGH BOSSES,
SETBACKS, AND SUCCESS by Joe Torre with Henry
Dreher . . . Torre, in case you're not a baseball fan, is the manager
of the New York Yankees . . . this book tells how he has
applied commonsense principles to become perhaps the
sport's best top skipper . . . nothing overly profound here,
but it all did make sense to me . . . and I liked how he related
baseball examples to business, family and life situations.
There were several passages I particularly enjoyed; among them:
* In any business, workers up and down the hierarchy want nothing
more than to be treated fairly, to feel that they aren't getting
the short end of a manager's stick. My second baseman in 1966,
Mario Duncan, once was quoted as saying about me, "He doesn't
play favorites. All twenty-five guys are his favorites." It was kind of
him to say, and I believe that it's true. Managers who make it
their business to keep personal preferences to themselves, to
show regard for all employees, and to be scrupulously fair about
opportunities, promotions, and perks, will be rewarded with a
bunch of highly motivated team players.
* During my eight years as a player with the Braves, I was fortunate
to hit behind baseball's all-time home run king, Hank Aaron. One
day, Hank and I were talking about batting slumps when he made
a comment that's stayed with me ever since: "Each at bat is a
new day."
* "I hang pictures," is a phrase I've used whenever I start a new
job. . . . When I first managed the Mets in the late 1970s, Boyer,
then the Cardinals' manager, visited me in my clubhouse
office. Kenny noticed all the personal pictures I had hanging on
the walls. "Wow," he exclaimed. "You expect to be here for a
while?"
"When I start working somewhere, I just assume that I'm going
to be there forever," I said. "It's the only way I can do my job."
Torre Uncovers Winning Attitude for Success.......2001-09-01
Coaches not only bring winning teams to victory, but they influence the team and individual to aspire to their highest potential. The art of coaching sculpts people into personal success with the clay of trust, encouragement, insight into individual psychology, and a thorough knowledge of the activity coached. Joe Torre, the manager of the New York Yankees baseball team who brought the players to championship at the World Series, weaves together these factors to show how business people can reach the same level of personal success. His wisdom applies to any activity that relies on an individual's extra push to succeed.
"How do you make it happen? As an individual, you work relentlessly on the fundamentals of the game-whatever you game may be," he notes in the book. The mechanics of the game or business lay the groundwork, but the variables of talent, interaction with coworkers, attitude and relationship skills count even more. "In order to build teamwork, you must acknowledge each individual's worth, letting him know that this role, no matter how seemingly minor, is a vital cog in the team's efforts," he writes.
In today's work environment, where getting to know fellow workers may be subordinate to getting the job done, and where the focus is on production rather than people, Torre's ground rules of knowing the people who work with and for you may seem radical. But, he says, they are essential.
His blend of common sense, experience and psychological insight make this book a productive and instructive use of time for managers or anyone wanting to succeed in business. He shows how the complexity of mind, emotion, heart and talent work together to build success, and he emphasizes the power of the mind and attitude on performance. The dreams and goals deep within the individual can win out, he insists. He encourages bravery and persistence to carry on in a world that can make it easy to douse the flame of a dream for the banality of safe routine. In the end, success in business and in life have meaning to the individual because of the struggle to get there. "(O)nly you know how many small triumphs and snarls went into that big victory, how many months, years, or decades of sweat and sorrow preceded that breakthrough. That's baseball, and that's life," he notes.
And that's Torre's attitude in a book worth reading.
A Good Read!.......2001-05-25
Joe Torre distills his management and "team player" philosophy into twelve keys. These insights elegantly deal with ways to inspire critical qualities, including trust, commitment, optimism, resilience, excellence, patience, integrity, respect, leadership, teamwork, and camaraderie. Torre illustrates his beliefs and advice with pertinent anecdotes told in a detailed, witty, heartfelt style. Torre, who has won four world series titles as manager of the New York Yankees, draws on his experiences as a player, manager, and leader. He includes the lessons he learned when he reported to a demanding team owner. The book delivers what it promises and offers an engaging behind-the-scenes look at professional baseball. We [...] recommend this book to executives, managers and employees at all levels in any kind of business. Since it never relies on macho clichés, both men and women will find it satisfying and worthwhile.
Product Description

He reveals the 12 keys to his successful mgmt. philosophy -- keys directly applicable to bus. & to life. Drawing from his years of experience in baseball, Torre shares his wisdom on the universal concerns of managers -- handling tough bosses, dealing with both setbacks & success, earning the trust & respect of your team players, & bringing together a diverse group of individuals into a cohesive unit with a willingness to make sacrifices necessary to win. An interesting account.......2007-06-23
This important chapter of American history is usually analyzed as the period of the 'Great Triumvirate' of Clay, Calhoun and Wesbter, three failed politicians who never achieved the highest office. Nevertheless Clay was one of the most important men of his period, when the Whigs vied with the Democrats for control of the nation. He was first elected to the house in 1811 and helped forge Jacksonian populist democracy as well as preside over the compromises stemming from slavery and ensuring that America was a vibrant democracy.
An interesting read, fair, and decent and well written.
Seth J. Frantzman
One of the Best Books on Henry Clay.......2007-06-02
This is certainly the best of Dr. Remini's books to date. It is an honest appraisal of the man as a human being with human weakness and a great patriot and statesman. Remini had the opportunity to use the "Works of Henry Clay in the writing of this book and the expert researching of the character.
We see Clay as John Q. Adams saw him, as the members of the House of Representatives as he reached his goal of Speaker, we sympathize with the grief stricken father of the boy who died in the Mexican War and how it affected Clay's politics. We share Clay's emotions as his different bids for the Presidential nominations are lost.As we are exposed to the genius and frailties of character of this stateman we see him through the eyes of his contemporaries and they show themselves through him.
This is a marvelous story well told. I would recommend it to every person interested in 19th century America.
A delightful read!.......2007-05-25
This was a pleasure to read at almost 800 pages of text! Mr Remini made it all come alive and I feel as if I truly knew Clay and Calhoun, Webster, Benton, Van Buren, Buchanan, etc. I plan to read more Mr Remini's books in the future.
Legislators as the stars of American history.......2006-07-22
Remini's biography of Henry Clay gives readers in our era of strong executive government a well-detailed glimpse of life in the Capitol in an era of domineering legislators. The point is relevant in this time of Congressional obeisance to the presidency, and can make us wonder about the value of the trade-off between a strong president in our complex and fast-moving age versus the deliberative (generally) input that the stars of the Congress carried out in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Clay is portrayed as a brilliant man, able (in the best sense) to manipulate his fellow politicos to move forward with the "American Plan" of a strong national government that aimed to build the infrastructure and industry of modern times. Strikingly, in our century the executive played the role of advocate of centralized power, while in Clay's era, the executives tended to oppose the centralization of power. As it turns out, Clay's view eventually won the battle, but at the cost of diminished legislative involvement in policy development.
Clay comes across as flawed by a too-powerful ego and hunger for the presidency, an office he seemingly should have held, but never did despite the many campaigns he ran.
Remini has brought fairly thorough research of the prolific correspondence of the day into his book repeatedly, and the reader benefits from the advantage of the first-hand language. At the point in his career when he wrote this Clay biography, Remini's style is less elegant than Caro's or McCullough's.
The book gives a wonderful survey of the many colorful figures of the era: Webster, Calhoun, Jackson, et al, and explains the accidents and machinations that brought us such marginal figures as Tippecanoe and Tyler, too.
For history buffs who want to understand the personal rivalries as well as the broad historical trends that led the nation towards the eventual catastrophe of the Civil War, this book is a wonderful way to round out their understanding.
Everything you wanted to know about Henry Clay.......2006-04-05
The title of this review says it all. Robert V. Remini's bio is a detailed - sometimes too much so - recounting of one of the most fascinating politicians in American history. Although a Jacksonian scholar, Remini does a credible job in his bio of Andrew Jackson's political and personal enemy and Abraham Lincoln's idol, Henry Clay. Remini is a scholar who writes like a popular writer - that is a good thing - and captures Clay's persona and ambition dead on. This is nearly a five-star book, its one negative being that it is overly long at more than 700 pages of relatively small print. Judicious editing could have cut at least 50 pages without skipping one event. Removal of the insignificant and redundant could have severed another 25 and perhaps more. Its length notwithstanding, the book is highly recommended.
Book Description
The rifle corps of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars are among the most recognisable of all the soldiers of that era: their distinctive dark green uniforms are as familiar as some of their exploits. They have achieved considerable fame through the large numbers of memoirs written by members of the rifle corps as well as through modern fiction, most notably the Sharpe series. Apart from their reputation as a corps d'elite, the riflemen were, in their time, at the very cutting edge of military technology and tactical theory. Philip Haythornwaite here uses fascinating first hand accounts and detailed research to give a 'soldier's-eye view' of the British Rifleman, his life and work.
Book Description
This book is a unique account of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Rwanda in the mid 1990s. Shaharyar M. Khan's tenure began in the immediate aftermath of the downing of President Habarimana's plane on April 6, 1994 and the massacres that followed. Khan details his encounters with soldiers and politicians, victims and survivors, perpetrators of the massacres, and humanitarian relief efforts. This book reveals how the UN works on the ground and at headquarters. AUTHORBIO: SHAHARYAR M. KHAN is a distinguished international diplomat and currently Pakistan's Ambassador to France.

"Another Failed Mission of the U.N.".......2007-03-09
"The Shallow Graves of Rwanda", Shaharyar Khan, 2000, I.B. Tauris, London, ISBN: 1-86064-616-6, HC 228 pgs., includes 1 map, 2 pgs. Acronyms, 16 Illust., 1 pg. Biblio., 8 pg. Index. 9 1/2" x 6 1/4"
Khan, retired Pakastani Muslim career deplomat, was give "onerous responsibility" to seek a peaceful settlement in Rwanda as Special Representative of UN Secretary-General after Tutsi Pres. Habyarimana's plane was shot down April 6, 1994. Arriving 3 mos. later, on July 4, 1994, the author learns a civil war &/or genocide had occurred with about 800,000-1,000,000 Rwandan's massacred, largely by Hutu majority wielding machetes in a planned mass-killing of the Tutsi minority. For reader's not familiar with Rwanda, the country is one of the smallest of the smallest countries in the world, less than the size of a small pea on a full Atlas-sized map page of Africa - it is surrounded on the W-N-E-S by Zaire, Uganda, Tanzania & Burundi.
Despite author's claim of his book as a diary, it is nothing of the sorts. He gives a brief synopsis of Rwandan's clash arising in the 1930's from colonists imposing Western values, intra-ethnic tensions, over-population, & that docile compliant mind-set of Rwandan peoples who are silently obedient to any authority. This is bizzare when put in context of the brutal killings which were barbaric, revengeful, & savagely carried out on men, Women, & children left to die slowly by hemorrhage, evisceration, limblessness, genitalia excisions, head bashings or smaller victims tossed into urinal pits to drown or suffocate in feces. It transcends by far anything reported in the Holocaust or Armenian Genocide.
The Author provides a list of 47 acronyms to distinguish & represent various Worldly, African, or United Nation offices, programs, organizations, plans, committees, missions, departments, coalitions, forces, etc. which are supposed to have helped Rwanda, but are herein documented to have been uniformly counter-productive, adversarial, overlapping & heavily endowed groups which spent millions if not billions of dollars in observing the situation, but not even pennies for rebuilding as roads, electric power, communications, etc. The author, despite his "onerous responsibility" was shown to have absolutely no power, & though he ussued decrees, demands, resolutions. suggestioons & reports, he discovered that no one really listened to him, or if they pretended to do so they readily changde their minds. We are informed that various organizations which should have been involved in peaceful measures were actually involved in the illegal & irrational importing of land mines, grenades, pistols, ammo & automatic weapons from Italy, Israel, Egypt, China, etc., instead of aid supplies.
We are informed about the insurgent military groups, RGF (Hutu) vs. the RPA (Tutsi) lead by 37-yr-old Tutsi leader Maj. Gen. Paul Kagame who quickly advanced from VP to Pres. of Rwanda. He was recently accused by French Magistrate Jean-Louis Bruguiere (Feb. 2007) as ordering the assassinations of April 6, 1944 & it was also alleged the U.S. and the U.N. quashed earlier inquiries since Paul Kagama was an ally of the U.S.
So, all in all, the book is not what it purports to be, is poorly written & poorly cllated,& it is highly repetitive of the miserable accountings of beastly killings that had already occurred before the impotent author had set foot in Kigali. If there was a "fall guy" for the U.N., it was the author. It is not a book about the Rwanda genocide, it is a book about power, politics, & money.
A first class case study of a UN operation.......2001-03-25
Although not quite perfect in its smallest detail, this is the most authoritative analysis yet available of the aid that the UN and the international community tried to provide to Rwanda after the genocide of 1994, concentrating on the period from the author's arrival in June of that year and tending to discuss UNAMIR's work at the operational rather than the tactical level - although it does cover, with dispassion and objectivity rather than overt emotion, a number of individual horror stories.
This must be regarded as a classic case study and, as one who worked under Ambassador Khan in Rwanda, I recommend it without reservation for students of the United Nations, those obliged to deal with this and other international organizations and, especially, those considering their resourcing.
The areas in which I would wish to assist Khan were he to revise his text for a future edition are: definition of the boundaries between Operation Homeward (which escapes mention under this name) and Operation Retour, and to give due credit due to Lt Col Tom Mullarkey for his formulation of Retour; Operation Hope and its role in the chronology of UNAMIR-RPF relations; Khan's somewhat rose-tinted view of UNAMIR's discipline and performance; and the captions of some photographs (Plate 5 is not of the medical centre in Kibeho but of a church somewhere else; Plate 6 is misdated - and definitely not of a scene in 1943; Plate 7 is of Kigali Prison rather than of Gikongoro's); amongst a full and mostly accurate coverage of the tragedy in Kibeho, correction of some minor flaws in the attribution of witness testimony.
In identifying these errors, this is not to say that I think this a poor book: I think it quite the opposite and believe that it deserves to be read very widely!
