She was the beloved wife of "heretic king" Akhenaton, who defied ancient custom by practicing monotheism and by elevating Nefertiti far above the role of subservient consort previously played by Egyptian queens. Her image has ravished Western viewers ever since a magnificent limestone bust unearthed at the royal retreat of Amarna went on display in Berlin in 1924. But frustratingly few facts are known about this woman who lived more than three millennia ago. As she did in Hatchepsut: The Female Pharaoh, British archeologist Joyce Tyldesley makes a virtue of necessity by writing a book that is as much a cultural history as a biography. As Akhenaton swept away the plethora of old gods, dismaying many of his subjects, he needed a strong female figure to soften the abstract austerity of Aten, the sun deity; his beautiful queen was celebrated in official art and inscriptions that focused on the domestic life of the royal family. Tyldesley meticulously analyzes this iconography to evaluate Nefertiti's position in Egypt and her importance to her husband, who clearly cherished her beyond the demands of propriety or political necessity. The author cannot give readers a strong sense of Nefertiti's personality--the evidence simply isn't there--but she paints a wonderfully evocative picture of life at the civilized heart of the ancient world. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
The first full-scale biography of one of the most mysterious, powerful, and beautiful women of the ancient world.
In the tradition of her intriguing Hatchepsut, Joyce Tyldesley rescues another female ruler from the shadows of history: Queen Nefertiti (c. 1350 b.c.). We know her from the exquisite painted bust in the Berlin Museum, discovered in 1912, which has made her ancient Egypt's most recognizable queen. Until now, however, her contributions to Egyptian society have remained largely neglected. Wife of Akhenaten, the monotheistic pharaoh, adored by her family, and worshiped by her people, Nefertiti suddenly vanished from the historical record. Was she exiled by her husband or promoted to rule alongside him as an equal? Tyldesley synthesizes archaeological, textual, and artistic evidence to re-create the dazzling court at Amarna and its captivating and influential queen.

A very good book to plunge into ancient Egypt.......2007-06-16
In my opinion, Joyce Tyldesley accomplishes an excelent recopilation of all science currently knows and theorizes about this queen and about the "Amarna" period in Ancient Egypt. What is excelent about it is that she does it in a very readable prose, explaining the nature of family relations, religion, social mobilization, and power during this period of Egyptian history. I loved this book and recommend it to any one who wonders what daily life was back in Egypt 3 to 4 thousand years ago!
R-Egypt in the Age of Cleopatra: History and Society Under the Ptolemies
Egypt's most beautiful queen.......2006-05-07
One of the most famous faces in the world, and perhaps one of the most well-known pieces of sculpture, is the exquisite bust of the Egyptian queen, Nefertiti, which is currently housed in the Berlin museum. She's also widely regarded as Egypt's most beautiful queen (I wonder what Cleopatra would have to say about that?). But what do we really know about her? Not a lot, as Joyce Tyldesley's book, Nefertiti, shows us. In fact, so little is known that a book that is rather short to begin with takes a lot of side trips talking about her husband and the unusual monotheistic religion that he formed. Thankfully, Tyledesley never claims to have all of the answers. Unfortunately, that didn't stop the publishers from advertising that she did. Yes, bad cover copy once again leads the reader astray, and while the book is interesting enough despite that, I still have to knock it down some for that. Many of the questions that the back cover asks ("Did she ever rule Egypt as king? When did she die?") don't actually have answers within the book. Tyledesley gives her best estimate, and refutes some of the common theories, but she admits that there's no way to tell.
Tyldesley has certainly given us an interesting book, however. She begins by giving an overview of Nefertiti's father-in-law, Amenhotep III, and his rule. She goes into great detail about Amenhotep's mother, Tiy, and examines some of the questions about them. It takes almost fifty pages before Nefertiti comes on the scene, and Tyldesley introduces her with the question of her parentage. No record has ever been found of her birth and only one relative has come to the fore. Some believe she was a foreigner come to Egypt, perhaps a Nubian princess? Tyldesley effortlessly deflects most of these theories, even as she does admit that they could be true. I was very glad to see that Tyldesley rarely assumes anything, giving the reader all sides of the story, even as she provides evidence that supports what she believes is the case.
The book then moves on to examine the reign of her husband, Akhenaten, and the religion that he founded (and which, subsequently, was pretty much wiped from history by subsequent pharaohs). Nefertiti does figure in this at times, as it has been proposed that she was a goddess figure much like Akhenaten was the god. Some images that date from this period show Nefertiti acting similar to what high priests would do in the previous religion, smiting enemies or leading religious ceremonies. For the most part, however, the chapter is about Akhenaten's rule, and subsequent chapters give us more detail, even as they examine Nefertiti's role in the whole thing. In fact, one of the chapters (called "Queen, King, or Goddess?") brings up the question of whether or not Nefertiti ever ruled in her husband's place, perhaps after he died. Once again, Tyldesley deals with that by giving us as much information as is known, stating that it's most likely that she never served as king and detailing why the other hypotheses aren't very credible.
I found these chapters especially interesting because, while I had heard of Akhenaten and his replacing of all the Egyptian gods with his own divinity, I didn't really know much about it. Tyldesley does a wonderful job giving the reader as much information about this period as she can, detailing all the references that Egyptologists have discovered about this period. She sets the scene wonderfully too, so clearly that I almost felt like I was walking the streets of ancient Amarna (what archeologists now call the city Akhenaten founded, though I don't think she ever explains why this is).
When Tyldesley begins discussing the "sunset" of Akhenaten's reign, that's when the book really begins to take a side trip. Nefertiti disappears from the narrative, and we must assume that she died at this point (Tyldesley does bring up some people's theory that she fell out of favour and was wiped from the record, but she quickly discounts it after explaining what evidence these theorists use for it). She then discusses the fall of Akhenaten, the birth of Tutankhamen, and the gradual erasure of the Amarna era as subsequent monarchs move back to the original capital and bring the old gods back. Another of Akhenaten's wives is believed to be Tut's mother, so we have a great many pages where the supposed thrust of the book is completely off screen. While this was interesting, I do believe that the book may have been tighter if it had remained centered on Nefertiti. Perhaps Tyldesley just takes too long to summarize what happened to Akhenaten after she disappears?
The book ends on a wonderful note, however, as Tyldesley gives a rundown of how Nefertiti came back to prominence with the discovery of the sculpture and further archeological research that brings Nefertiti back to the forefront. For the longest time, archeologists thought that Queen Tiy was the main inspiration for Akhenaten's religious reforms (as Tyldesley notes, a book on the Queen's of Egypt written in 1908 only gave Nefertiti six pages), but subsequent findings have restored Nefertiti to her rightful place. I love reading about archeology, so this was probably my favourite chapter in the book, and it's a fitting conclusion to it.
As Tyldesley says in her introduction, "We simply do not have the information to write the definitive 'warts and all' biography which we have come to expect of more modern subjects." However, she has definitely given us the closest thing possible to it. She demonstrates the mystique Nefertiti had (and still has), presents us with her theories, and even gives credence to other, more conflicting ones (sometimes before demolishing them). This is a great book, marred only by a tendency to drift away from the subject occasionally. Those with an interest in Egyptology should lap this up.

The Mysterious Queen .......2005-10-07
In the world of Egyptology, Queen Nefertiti is probably the most interesting female figure. Not much is known about the queen making her that much more fascinating. Finding an extended book about Nefertiti is hard to find due to the fact that her history is so vague. This book is probably one of the best about the queen and the book is relatively recent, so the information and new "discoveries" about her are pretty accurate. Not the whole book is about Nefertiti because we don't really know that much about her. The book also describes Amenhotep III and Queen Tiy, the parents of the fascinating Akhenaten. Akhenaten is the other major person besides Nefertiti in the book. He was the husband of Nefertiti as well as the first prominent monotheistic figure in history. One does get the idea of Nefertiti's almost goddess-like presence in Egypt as well as her high status in society often ruling equally beside her husband in the book. Tyldesley does a great job with Nefertiti. This is probably a must have book for Nefertiti as well as Akhenaten.
Can we get some new theories?.......2004-10-10
All in all, this is a pretty good book, in a textbook-y way. In my opinion, it was mainly a rehash of the popular theories of Nefertiti, and not really anything new and exciting for us to read.
Side note to reviewer Ma Ra: If you are so ticked off at Nefertiti looking more Middle Eastern than African, there's a sculptor that's been dead for 3000 years that you'll have to take it up with. Anyone with eyes who has seen Ancient Egyptian art knows that they depicted themselves as more Middle Eastern looking than what modern people consider "African". Sounds to me like you're pushing a sterotype.
The Mysterious Queen.......2004-06-01
Nefertiti was the most influential woman in ancient Egypt. Her entire life, where she came from and how she died, in shrouded in mystery. She married in her early teens to Amenhotep IV who may have been sixteen or seventeen. After marrying she became a mother to six daughters and became a member of the Royal Court of Amarna. She was the first queen to be equal with the king. They lived at Thebes where they ruled the upper and lower kingdoms.
The one thing I did not like about this book was how it seemed to go into more detail about Amenhotep IV and his family than Nefertiti. That was probable do to the fact that we know so little about her. Nothing of her life is know before she was married and very little is know after Amenhotep IV dies. The book gave Amenhotep IV inter family line and went on for too long. It took you away from the central topic.
The best thing is the attention to detail. Every little factor, from family history to the culture is given. It gives the reader a since of what life was like and makes you feel as if you were actually there. The artier takes evidence from archeological remains to make this God like queen more like a real person. This was a book that you could get in to.
Book Description
Teddy Ballgame: A Tribute to Ted Williams is filled to the brim with wonderful photos and stories about the man who reigns today as the elder statesman of baseball. Agreed by most to be the greatest pure hitter in the history of the game, Teddy Ballgame is a lot more. He's a military hero as well, having served in two wars and having flown combat missions with John Glenn as a United States Marine Corps jet fighter pilot. As a celebrity, he has lent his name to numerable charitable efforts and his half-century of service in the cause of fighting children's cancer represents the longest association of any sports figure with a charitable cause. Among baseball fans, no one who watched the 1999 All Star Game will ever forget the moment when all the great Hall of Famers from the game's past broke ranks on the field at Fenway Park and flocked around Ted once he was brought to the mound. It was a spontaneous show of love and admiration for Teddy Ballgame. This book isn't just for Red Sox fans, it's for baseball fans of all ages and allegiances.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, but be careful........2003-01-03
This is a great book, but basically it's the same book the authors put out in 1997 under the title "Ted Williams: A Tribute" They did add a CD.
A Must for Any Fan or Collector.......2002-08-10
I bought this book for my father, a diehard Ted Williams fan since childhood. He has read other books on Williams and says, by far, this is the best. The stories are fascinating and revealing, and offer little-known information, even if you followed his great career and life. The paper quality, design, and writing are superb, making it a wonderful keepsake or collector's piece. I would not hesitate to buy this as a gift for any sports fan, knowing they would not be disappointed. It would make a nice coffeetable piece in a den or sports-watching room. An absolutely wonderful book on all counts.

More than just trivia,
Fabulous Fallacies is a collection of more than 300 popular beliefs, unceremoniously debunked! If you think Noah took animals on the ark only in twos, you'd better read this book.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and interesting.......2004-07-21
I found this book at my library and it looked intriguing so I checked it out. That was yesterday and today I'm almost done with it. Most of the entries are interesting, even if simply quibbling. Many of them I was already aware of as being fallacies (like spinach making you strong or that Columbus was one of the few of his day who thought the earth to be round) but there were still many more where I found my self going, "oh wow!" or "aha!" or "oh, interesting." (the real title of "Whistler's Mother", the mistaken identity of The Jazz Singer being the first "talkie," and finding that Thoreau was never really a recluse at all) One of my favorite sections is the one on religion and specifically the Bible--especially when the source is the Bible itself! (there was no *apple*, and Noah did not necessarily take 2 of each animal on his ark, oh and Lucifer is not the Devil.)
At other times I was just happy to see an oft misquoted passages or misconceptions corrected (like the famous lines "Play it again, Sam" being attributed to Humphry Bogart's character in Casablance--that's simply not what he said in the movie!" or the fac that Marie Antoinette never said "let them eat cake"! the poor girl has gone down in history as a horrible, unthinking, elitist pig which is just simply unfair).
Of course there are many entries that don't interest me in the least ("who invented baseball") but it's easy to skip over those and skim others. It's one of those books that you can pick up, read a few pages at random, learn a thing or two and put down again. Of course, you could also sit yourself in your room for hours determined to become one of the "enlightened ones" like yours truly and try to read the entire book in two days (only a couple hundred pages of quick reading). The writing style is very unimposing and almost chatty and I even found myself laughing out loud every now and then--although I can not garentee this response out of everyone as I have been told I have a rather dry sense of humour. Anyway, I found it fun and possibly useful for upcoming games of trivial pursuit.
"Everybody is wrong," including Tuleja.......2003-02-24
There are plenty of interesting and useful facts in this book. However, some of Tuleja's "facts" are simply quibbling over technicalities. The Emancipation Proclamation freed no slaves? Well, not actually on the day it was issued, no. But since it made slaves in rebellious areas free as soon as those areas were under Union control, it did free millions of slaves. To say it freed no slaves is like saying no one died as a result of World War II because no battles between Allies and Axis took place on September 1, 1939. George Washington was not the first President of the United States? Technically, the term "president" was used earlier in U.S. history, but in every sense that we mean "president" (i.e., the Constitutional sense), Washington was first... as acknowledged by every list of U.S. presidents since Washington's time. It's not as though people of the time instantly forgot the earlier "presidents"; they just considered them irrelevant. And so on. Again, many of the facts in the book are correct and significant, but on some occasions, Tuleja lets a need for contrarianism get the better of him.
Interesting Book.......1999-07-24
I thought this book was very interesting and I learned a few things. Somethings I had always known, some I just discovered recently like what the Emacipation Proclaimation was really all about and somethings I was surprised to learn while reading the book. The original book is almost 20 years old so many of the fallacies have been brought up a long time ago. Still if you are interested in history or myths and legends this book is great to have.

Over rated ..........2000-08-26
This book contains 90 pages of (mostly) multiple choice questions with the answers at the back of the book. It is the type of material that routinely follows a chapter in any textbook. Though the questions are to the point, my objection is that it is published as a separate book at the price of many complete works. Properly published, these questions would not add 90 pages to the original text which was itself under 300 pages. The questions did not help me understand the material, only tested my recollection. I feel that publishing this material as a workbook is only a marketing ploy and cheapens the product.
The Work Book goes with the Options Course Book.......2000-02-04
I have bought this book and the Options Course Book. This book is designed to directly relate to the hardback book (Options Course Book) and has no application to be read on its own.
The author has used the workbook to test your knowledge of the hard back book. The work book pulls the salient points out so that you ensure you got what you need.
The tests are accompanied by the answers at the back of the book. I thought it a great idea to combine the two books as I never know if I got it all when I read a book.
This book has no practical use on its own and should have been bought with the Course Book.
Great idea. However, if you are looking for the detail you should buy the Options Course Book.
There is no material to review.......2000-02-03
If you're looking to read and assimilate information about options and then test yourself on the information just acquired - this is the exact wrong book!
This book contains only questions and multiple choice answers. The answers are in the back. The learning method is to take the tests blindly and then see how many you guessed correctly. It is learning in reverse.
I was hoping for an explanation of a term or concept and then a follow up test. There are only tests. As such it may live up to the letter of its title but it fails miserably as a teaching tool. For what it purports to be and for what it delivers it seems ridiculously overpriced.
A very unsatisfied customer.
Excellent Book to Accompany the Options Course Book.......2000-01-06
I used this book in tandem with the OCB to pull the points that I wanted to understand. The author has used the additional book to ensure that each chapter of the OCB is pointed and hits the mark.
This book is a must to purchase at the same time as his first book Options Course Book. Great idea to reinforce for the reader the salient points that you want to get over
Thank you Mr. Fontanills

Book Description
As her own words prove well, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis could be at times funny, buoyant, candid, irreverent, and of course poignant, too. This collection of quotes shares her thoughts on marriage, family, political life and ambition, publicity, privacy, and more as she confided them to intimate friends, family, and interviewers alike.
Memories of her childhood, her love for Jack, her children and grandchildren, the Kennedys, her often misunderstood marriage to Aristotle Onassis, her years as a widow, and her later companionship with Maurice Tempelsman are all represented here, as are some rather remarkable correspondences with the Johnsons, the Nixons, and the Khrushchevs.
A sampling of her wit and wisdom:
- "I was a tomboy. I decided to learn to dance and I became feminine."
- "Well, I think my biggest achievement is that, after going through a rather difficult time, I consider myself comparatively sane."
- "When Harvard men say they have graduated from Radcliffe, then we've made it."
- "If Jack proved to be the greatest president of the century and his children turned out badly, it would be a tragedy."
Forty years ago, when the nation was coming out from under a period of mourning, Bill Adler edited The Kennedy Wit and in so doing helped the world remember a man and a president, not just a sorrowful event. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's death, he has edited yet another book of quotes celebrating life -- this time the life of Jackie.
The accompanying DVD documentary is considered by many to be the definitive film biography of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and was produced by CBS News Productions for Arts & Entertainment Network.

This book paints a picture of a person, using very brief quotes and anecdotes categorized by topic. One can pick this book up and read something which reveals the inner character of Jackie O.
A charming book about a grand lady.......2004-05-29
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy was without a doubt one of America?s most admired first ladies and that is the major theme of this book. Although the book - a collection of quotes taken from a variety of sources, mostly interviews given by Mrs. Kennedy - spans her lifetime, a good portion is devoted to Jackie?s roles as the young wife of Senator John F. Kennedy and as the Nation?s First Lady.
In order to fully appreciate some of the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis?s comments about her roles as a woman/wife/mother and widow, it is important to bring up the historical context. The Kennedy Administration, ?Camelot,? took place amid turbulent times: widespread civil and racial unrest, the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and escalating involvement in the Vietnamese conflict. The women?s movement was then in its infancy and it is against this backdrop that the Kennedy?s acquired mythical, almost magical qualities.
?Jack and Jackie were America?s royal couple,? writes Bill Adler in his introduction to The Eloquent Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis; A Portrait in Her Own Words. The quotes provide a window into her childhood, life with JFK and her role as First Lady, then widowhood, followed by her marriage to Aristotle Onassis, her work as book editor for both Viking Publishers and Doubleday, and final years. One section deals with the assassination, ?Jack was the love of my life. No one will ever know a big part of me died with him.?
A common thread that runs throughout is her great love of, and reliance on, the family. Jackie?s life revolved around those she loved the most, her husband and her children, Caroline and John Jr. ?Raising children is the best thing I?ve ever done,? she declared.
For those of us who lived through the sixties and are old enough to remember where we were when we heard that the President of the United States had been mortally wounded by an assassin?s bullet, this tiny giant of a book will help to fan the flames of remembrance by highlighting the ?beauty, grace and intelligence Jacqueline Kennedy brought to the White House,? the country, and the world.
Book Description
A period that is commonly presented as a long, drawn out battle between sail and steam, this volume - the sixth in an ambitious series - sets out to prove that this was not the case and that shipowners, far from seeing the two types as irreconcilable rivals, invested in one or the other according to the usual commercial evaluation of potential risks and rewards.

As a reader of Great Lakes maritime history I see a lot of different ships mentioned in passing. Here is a book that will give you the technical details on those ships and what factors drove the particulars of their construction. Of couse this book is a study of seafaring worldwide, but much of this technology was in heavy use on the inland seas in the late nineteenth century. This makes this book a valuable addition to the maritime enthusiast's library.

Almost but not quite.......2007-08-27
Ignore the rants of the left. If you have to buy just 1 get the Almanac. That being said this is very good and I will be getting both 2008 issues in a week. Why is it that a moderate conserveative writer (Barone certainly not Cohen) is viewed as being incapable of objective reporting but those on the left are oh so neutral. Here's a thought I watch Fox, CNN, MSNBC, BBC, Russia Today and the English German news. I wonder who has a wider world view, me- a libertarian con.- or the liberal who would never think of listening to a different view. Long live cable TV and diversity in reading material
A standard, up-to-date volume with some flaws.......2005-09-21
CQ's "Politics in America" is certainly still a very helpful tool, not only for Beltway insiders, political junkies, and Congressional scholars - via biography, it presents a panorama of the American political landscape as it really is, and it traces the most recent history as well as quite current events. There are two handbooks like that; this is supposed to be the more "liberal", and also the more objective, as compared to the "Almanac of American Politics", which however is not out yet (the last edn. is for 2004). The GQ 2006 version is certainly up to date, quite well written, and with a lot of good information. This is the rare case of an encyclopedia-like book that one actually might want to read, rather than only use for reference.
That said, there are some flaws with this edition, especially if compared to the Almanac and to earlier editions of CQ. After all, this is the kind of ressource that today would be typically found on the internet or CD-ROM. Because of the reading quality, it's good to have the book, but publishers and editors must make most of typical book advantages.
The list of deficiencies of GQ 2006 includes, then, a very small font, confusing maps, and a generally convoluted layout. Contents-wise, there is no description of governors, or of states; in the personal profiles, there is no general indication of subcommittee chairships/ranking position anymore; and the general introduction is also a bit brief.
That said, CQ 2006 would rank *** within the context of handbooks as they can be and have been, and ***** as such, especially seeing that right now at least there is no alternative (and one has to admit that the Almanac likewise has the similar technical problems).
A Very Good Guide to Congress.......2005-08-24
CQ's Politics in America is a very good guide to Congress. The writers go into detail about where the members stand on issues and what they do in Washington. Compare that to the Almanac of American politics which is more interested in election results (which can be good) and as a forum for Michael Barone's conservative views, which is fine for conservatives but can irritate those just looking for the facts. Also what CQ does is treat members equally (except the leaders) unlike the Barone practice of playing favorites.
Thorough...a must have for political junkies.......2005-08-22
"Congressional Quarterly's Politics in America" is one of two well-known (to political geeks, at least) registers of congressional facts. I considered the other, National Journal's "The Almanac of American Politics" prior to deciding on CQ. Both versions appear to contain the same basic information: district maps, congressional bios, voting proclivities, and basic state information. However, the editing of "The Almanac of American Politics" by Michael Barone elicited concern that Barone couldn't withhold his ultra-conservative views and edit an unbiased guide. All other things being equal, I went with the version which I felt comfortable would leave out the partisan slant. In CQ's "Politics in America", every returning member of the 109th Congress gets two pages of biography, history, key votes and election results. Those serving their first term in the 109th still get one page. In addition, there's a state info page, a congressional district map (my one disappointment: the maps could be more detailed) and pages of interesting facts about the 109th (did you know that the Utah 3rd--encompassing suburban Salt Lake City, south through Provo and the southern part of the state to the Nevada border--is, by over 2 years average, the youngest congressional district with an average age of 24.5 years?). Not to mention a race-by-race 2004 campaign finance report. Politics in America weighs in at a hefty 1218 pages. For any political junkie, it's a great bi-annual investment.

Book Description
Design options and planning procedures must be critically examined to ensure that landscapes are created with sensitivity to water quality and management issues as well as overall ecological integrity. Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design presents the history of water as a design and planning element in landscape architecture and describes new interpretations of water management. This text pushes the frontiers of standard water management in new directions, challenging readers into abandoning the comfortable safety of conducting business-as-usual within narrow disciplinary confines, and instead directing views outward to the exciting and incompletely mapped regions of true interdisciplinary water sensitive planning and design. With contributions from renowned practitioners, Part I provides seventeen chapters addressing the subject of site-specific water sensitive design and Part II presents another seventeen chapters focusing on issues relating to the water sensitive planning of riparian buffers and watersheds. In addition, Professor France has provided a "Response" to accompany each chapter, which succinctly underscores the salient features in more detail and emphasizes cross-linking to other chapters in the book. The "Overview" provides a brief road-map to navigate through the section. Finally, the discussion summaries at the end of each section elaborate on past problems, current challenges, and future directions. Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design puts forward the very best of modern water sensitive planning and design and should be required reading for everyone involved in this dynamic and crucial field.
