Book Description
In her international best sellers, PRINCESS and PRINCESS SULTANA'S DAUGHTERS, Jean Sasson vividly depicted the harsh restrictions endured by Saudi women. These books described the lives of women who live in a society where they have few rights, little control over their own lives or bodies, and have no choice but to endure the atrocities perpetrated against them.
Now, in response to readers' tremendous outpouring of interest and affection for Sultana, as well as her works on behalf of oppressed women, Jean Sasson and the Princess continue to expose the outrageous human rights abuses suffered by women in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
When Sultana's niece is forced into an arranged marriage with a cruel, depraved older man, and a royal cousin in revealed as keeping a harem of sex slaves, Sultana's attempts at intervention in their various plights are thwarted. But when her nephews are caught committing an unspeakable act against a 12-year-old girl, Sultana is galvanized into action. Risking her personal status and wealth, she takes a stand against the complacency of her male relatives over the child' fate. Ultimately, Sultana and her siters vow to form a circle of support that will surround and shelter abused women and girls.
As with PRINCESS and PRINCESS SULTANA'S DAUGHTERS, the reader is compelled to read just one more page, one more chapter, once they begin reading PRINCESS SULTANA'S CIRCLE.
Customer Reviews:
Saudi Arabia.......2007-03-27
I highly recommend reading the Princess Trilogy. I had a hard time putting the book down. It's a really easy read.
History.......2006-11-02
My review is the same as I gave for the book "Princess" It is very good
Good Read.......2006-09-22
This book was not better then the first book in the series but definately beter then the 2nd one. I found the story boring at time as some issues that were already discussed in the fist book where discussed again in the 3rd book. Other then that it was a good continuation.
For Goodpasture.......2006-05-25
Goodpasture, I simply had to share with you that I happen to know that the princess supports over 700 needy families, from feeding them to educating their children to tending to their health care. In fact, in the book, if you finished reading it, tells how her son bought a business in Pakistan and set the young woman up as the owner, where she is prospering. Although she did stay in the princess' sister's home for a while, it was explained in the book that they were afraid to send her home, that her parents might resell her. Everything takes time. I know two princesses extremely well, one from Saudi Arabia and one from Kuwait, and both are extremely generous and help people all over the world. I'm sorry you had such a negative opinion of the princess, but like I said, I'm confused that you didn't read on to see that indeed she did change the young woman's life in a very wonderful manner. Just because the princess is extremely wealthy and does enjoy her personal wealth, she gives away a mind-boggling amount of money, and for good causes. I just thought you would like to know, as well as others, so you would not feel so disappointed and angry at the princess over an impression that is not reality. Also, many things are not told in the books as some things would give her identity away on the spot.
Excellent Trilogy, would love more..........2004-10-04
This is the third book in the Princess trilogy. I raced through the book in two days. Princess Sultana's Circle goes more into situations, which Sultana tries to fix such as freeing a harem of women or saving her niece from a forced marriage to a disgusting older man. Princess Sultana finally emerges victorious in her struggle to help out somebody. In this book they also go over the holy month of Ramadan, camping in the desert, and shopping in New York.
The author does such a great job of making everything in this book so real and colorful that you feel like you are there. I would recommend any of the Princess books. I would suggest that it is always fun to start reading from the beginning of the trilogy because you get a good feel for all the characters. Great book!

Book Description
When Nan Mooney was seven years old, she sat down in her grandmother May-May's living room to watch her first ever horse race. In that single afternoon, she launched what would become a turbulent romance between a woman and a sport. My Racing Heart is part memoir, part journey into the compelling world of Thoroughbred horse racing. At its heart is Nan's relationship with her grandmother, an adventurer, racing connoisseur, and woman of courage and compassion. May-May fostered in Nan a love of Thoroughbreds and the track, ushering her into a rare corner of the world where risk taking is daily currency.Nan thought her emotional link to the races died with May-May, only to have it roar back to life a decade later at New York's Belmont Park. This renewed relationship culminates in a grown-up appreciation for a universe where expectations are constantly defied, and in the realization of a longtime dream -- a trip to the Kentucky Derby.Far more than just a personal tale, My Racing Heart lets readers in on the wild culture and fabulous creatures that rise up around the racetrack. Nan Mooney probes every aspect of the sport: the horses, jockeys, and trainers, the gambling and corruption, its ages-old history, and its forever offbeat society. She takes readers from the backstretch of a small-town track to the stands at Churchill Downs, from the mind of an intrepid gambler to the soul of a Thoroughbred. She explores how the sport itself, and the men and women who participate in it, flourish upon the principle that there are no sure things. My Racing Heart will speak to every horse lover, to every sports nut, and to everyone who cherishes the thrill of possibility or has ever craved a place to run wild. This unique and exquisite memoir perfectly captures the lure, the glory, and the heartbeat of the track.

Not bad........2004-03-17
Nan Mooney, My Racing Heart (Harper, 2002)
Nan Mooney loves horses. Specifically, Thoroughbreds, the ones who hit the track, dust it up with six to twelve of their closest friends, and make humans gape in awe at the process. This odd amalgam of personal-memoir-cum-treatise-on-track-life is not an unfamiliar breed to the horse fan; the measuring stick against which all such books are brought is Bill Barich's stunning Laughing in the Hills. I'm sure one day, another book that good in that genre will arrive. While My Racing Heart has its good points, to be simple about it, this ain't it.
Where Barich succeeds as so many others (Michael Klein, Mooney, Liz Mitchell, and many others) fail is in his ability to take two different things that have inherently different paces and make them merge together into one book whose readability is consistent across chapters on differing subjects (in Barich's case, handicapping the races at Golden Gate while dealing with his mother's cancer). He meshes the two in such a way that, despite being parallel narratives happening a country apart from one another, the whole thing flows. Seamless, like an egg, as Stephen King once said. In Mooney's case the two main threads are a basic nuts-and-bolts look at the Thoroughbred industry from someone with enough clout to get inside the lines but not enough cynicism to keep pumping out the same old platitudes and a memoir about her grandmother, who introduced her to horse racing at an age tender enough that I suspect her parents weren't very happy. Either of these two things on their own would have stood as a book in itself; the slow, meandering passages about her grandmother and how the two of them interacted and the snappy, sometimes sarcastic looks at track life. It is when the two are entwined with one another that things break down to the extent they do, with the reader finding himself transported with no warning from the high of making friends with a Kentucky Derby contender to a lazy meditation on what life must have been like in the early twenties in Alaska.
Not to say it isn't worth reading; that's not it at all. There is some fine stuff here. It just could have used a little tuning. ** ½
Avoid this book.......2004-01-16
I bought this book hoping for some real insight into the world of Thoroughbred racing from the history and allure of the breed to the off limits world of the backstretch. Given the authors credentials, one might think that that's what you'd get. This book, however, is the most self indulgent, cloying piece of pap ever put to paper. This book reads more like a teenage drama queen's diary than a satisfying chronicle of The Sport of Kings. The only reason to buy this book would be the picture on the cover; it's phenomenal. Unfortunately, the photographer wasn't involved with writing the book.
I had to put it down..........2004-01-15
This book is so full of useless, flowery writing that I just couldn't take it anymore. Her method of description is simply annoying. Not only that... every chapter begins with lame stories of May May, Nan's grandmother, that just about drove me crazy.
i cannot read this book..........2003-11-07
simply because the author's name is 'nan'. so sorry, but when i see the name 'nan mooney' it makes me want to vomit, or at least pass on reading this. anyone who walks around and authors books and attaches the name 'nan' screams overweight housewife to me. please pass on this because it really is wrong to read a book by an author with sch a name. if i wrote a book, and signed 'little danny o'malley' would you read it? hell no. or heck, which i'm sure amazon will put in the previous sentence.
Magical..........2003-05-27
Ms. Mooney's engaging writing style brings the world of horse racing magically alive. A lover of horses and horse racing since she was a child (thanks to her spectacular grandmother, whose story is woven throughout the book), Ms. Mooney's passion for the sport is infectious. I especially liked the thorough and entertaining way she covered the history of the sport. I'm looking forward to reading more from her; that her next work will immensely please seems to be a safe bet.

Book Description
David Sterritt, film critic for the Christian Science Monitor and professor of film at Long Island University, is one of the most astute, acclaimed, and thought-provoking critics in America. Sterritt's sharp eye for telling detail and deep understanding of cinema and its history make his work appealing to scholars and lay audiences.
Guiltless Pleasures: A David Sterritt Film Reader collects his most incisive essays from 1970 to the present. The collection emphasizes films and filmmakers that are often overlooked or undervalued because they stray from ordinary norms of commercial cinema. At a time when admitting to "guilty pleasures" has become a common pastime among serious moviegoers, Sterritt argues that there's no reason to feel guilty about the alchemy of cinema. After all, he maintains, the inner journeys we take by means of movies and other cultural works are a large part of what makes life worth living.
He also recognizes that many cinematic pleasures don't come quickly or easily, but must be acquired and cultivated before it can be savored. Guiltless Pleasures focuses on such rewarding challenges as the avant-garde masterpieces of Stan Brakhage, the unsettling videos of Robert Wilson, and the violent, disturbing films of Gaspar Noé. Sterritt writes equally well and insightfully on mainstream Hollywood films.
Each essay reflects a wish to challenge taken-for-granted norms, rejecting what's sometimes called the "excessively obvious" style of standard commercial fare. In Guiltless Pleasures Sterritt shares his conviction that what the movie world needs most are more imaginative artists, more adventurous commentators, and more intuitive, open-minded audiences.

Good Overall.......2006-10-11
Pretty thorough text for anyone learning or brushing up on their skills...quite intuitive.
This is one of the best business statistics book.......2001-10-27
This book is used in the course of Business Statistics at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is a useful and understandable book. The questions are well-prepared.Also,the statistics program PhSTAT is given with this book. I advise you to buy.
Good, but could be better.......2000-10-20
This book is okay, but it could definitely be better. For a basic statistics class, this book contains WAY too much information to digest in a semester of college. No professor I know of has ever gotten past chapter 8. Further, the problems are quite wimpy as far as the amount of thought required for them. Quite wimpy. Could be better. The only good thing is that for doing it on a spreadsheet, the data comes on a CD, so that you don't have to re-type it, thankfully.

Book Description
Hailed by Muhammad Ali as "the king, the master, my idol," Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest boxer America had seen since Joe Louis and is considered by many today to be, pound for pound, the best boxer the sport has ever known.
A world welterweight and five–time middleweight champion, he had a career that spanned three decades. With his graceful yet powerful style and Hollywood looks – which he would use to his advantage upon his final retirement from boxing – he embodied the very essence of the "sweet science." Before he finally hung up his boxing gloves in 1965, at the age of forty–four, Sugar Ray Robinson won 125 consecutive fights, including victories over Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer, and Randy Turpin. His successes were not his alone, however. They belonged to his family as well, though those relationships would be marked by neglect and abuse.
At a time still characterized by discrimination, his victories, like those of Jackie Robinson, represented victories for all black America. And they were all the more symbolic because of the place he chose to call home –– Harlem. Co–written with Robinson's son, Ray Robinson II, and thoroughly researched by Amsterdam News reporter Herb Boyd, Pound for Pound is not only a definitive portrait of an emotionally complex man and his family, it is also a portrait of Harlem at the apex of its creativity, a time when Miles Davis was playing at Minton's, Langston Hughes was writing his divine poetry, and a boy from Georgia originally named Walker Smith Jr. would take on the moniker "Sugar."
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing, Superficial.......2007-06-30
Start with 5 stars
Take off 1 star for a self-serving and completely erroneous foreward by Percy Sutton who takes credit for saving the Apollo Thetaer in Harlem. Fact is he ran the Apollo into the ground and if it were not for the NY Daily News exposing Sutton, there would be no Apollo theater. You can look it up.
Take off another 1-1/2 stars for a very odd comment in the epilogue. Boyd talks all through the book that Robinson was violent towards family members, especially his wife Edna. But in the epiologue, Boyd says "there are the reports of his abuse of the women in his life." Huh?? Did Robinson beat Edna or are these just "reports".
Take off another star as the feeling you get at the end that this is a very superficial book. You have no idea of what makes him and Edna tick.
Book tailed off.......2007-03-10
This was a good book on a great champion. We get to see Robinson grow up and become the master boxer and hear about his life over the years. The decline in boxing skills is discussed as is the infidelities, the spousal abuse and the financial failings.
I would have liked to have had more information on the life post-retirement and have had more photos.
All in all, I enjoyed the book.
Good biography but lightweight for boxing fans.......2007-02-17
Sugar Ray is one of those boxers who when you read a book like this realise how the term "great" should be subject to stricter rationing. A man who fought over 200 professional fights with 175 victories (including 109 KOs) over 15 years leaves many of the current breed of "champions" looking anything but.
This biography written by African historian Herb Boyd helped by Sugar Ray's son Ray, is a well written warts and all biography of how Sugar Ray progressed from the inevitable poor beginnings of black amateur boxing in
the 1930s to being a world class boxer who excelled at both Welterweight and Middleweight World titles. The coverage falls into two strands being his boxing career and including how Sugar avoided the traps of being a
stooge for crime bosses; his epic struggle with Jake La Motta who he fought six times (after losing on February 5th 1943 rematching and beating 21 days later, both fights being over 10 rounds!); his hard personal negotiating against promoters and managers for his fair share of the fight purse including then unheard of early TV fight rights and his touring of Europe where he became a major star in France.
The second strand is the personal life story of a man who helped fuel the Harlem renaissance by investing his winnings in business ventures in that area to developing a higher level of black self pride with his renowned pink cadillac and family life image (Muhammad Ali being an early fan), all undermined by a lack of the personal discipline he displayed in the ring when it came to personal affairs and business finances, which led to endless battles with the IRS and his descent into penury amidst debilitating illnesses.
What is sadly missing for any fight fan (and the reason for my 3 star rating) is any true understanding of the reasons why so many people still see him as the best "pound for pound" fighter of all time - his fighting skills (rather than his fights record); his training regime and a better coverage of the boxing environment at that time given its vast difference with todays scene. That book still awaits to be written it seems.
over-matched with Mrs........2006-11-11

Book Description
Supermarine Spitfire is today seen as one of the greatest fighter aircraft ever built. Go to any airshow and there will be airframes powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin. Some will be Mustangs, possibly a Lancaster, even a Hawker Hurricane, however it is likely that the carrier of the engine will be a Supermarine Spitfire. Each type has its own particular soundwave, and that of the Spitfire is not only distinctive but a source of great pleasure to its many fans. It is the fighter that characterized the British effort in World War II. This book offers details on Spitfire development, technical cutaways, and in-depth information on fighters, reconnaissance, and Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. Warbird Tech Volume 35.
Customer Reviews:
Well done synthesis on one of the more popular planes.......2003-10-20
Mr. Darling had chosen a fascinating, albeit challenging task: describe a legend of the air in synthesis, given the restricted space of the book. In my opinion the task is successly accomplished, especially considering the good amount of technical infos delivered to the reader, i.e. all main difference between so many marks. Surely some chapters on genesis and combat use could be wider, but I like very much the technical analysis so well described, in both authoritative and straightforward manner. A good addition to many other books on the "Spit"!

Book Description
Through vivid and searching portraits of these three redoubtable journalists, prizewinning historian John L. Thomas traces for the first time the evolving ideologies of the most significant reformers of their age.
George's Progress and Poverty, Bellamy's Looking Backward, and Lloyd's Wealth Against Commonwealth each in its turn became an international best-seller, championing a course of national policy and social reform that owed allegiance neither to the large-scale capitalist model then emerging, nor to the bureaucratic socialism espoused on the left. Also common to the vast writings of all three were a deep distrust of partisan machine politics and a mounting sense of social crisis which neither spoilsmanship nor materialism seemed able to address.
Seeking instead diversity and cooperation within society, small economic units, and simplicity in government, the authors of these works were moved to defend strikes during the heyday of industrial capitalism. They spoke out for international peace when imperialism was rampant. They called for the preservation of community values in the face of urban sprawl. And they urged the goals of brotherhood and interdependence in an age when survival of the fittest was seen as holy writ.
They failed magnificently as apostles of a radical culture based on the ideal of a community, yet their intellectual legacy was not lost: their heirs include the broad movement that took the name Progressive, the New Deal, and the hopeful crusades of the 1960s. This magnificent book is their memorial and their history.

An Alternative View of Forests Based on Hard Science.......2001-02-17
Ever sense that television news is more about cosmetics, sound bites, and talk-show celebrity journalism than it is about digging for hard facts and verifying authentic sources? Misinformation about forests and forestry appears to be like that - superficial and unsubstantiated. The problem with lazy thinking like "where there's smoke, there's fire" is that any actual firefighter can tell you it is smoke that kills, almost never fire. Yet society sits in judgement amid great black clouds of speculation while never acquiring expertise or determining who is blowing smoke.
What is amazing is that Patrick Moore's highly educated and scientific position on forest management should be so widely assailed in the court of common knowledge and public opinion. There is very little examination of fact. Widespread untruths circulate freely, and every opposing viewpoint is demonized. Further reason to carefully consider Patrick Moore's contrarian view and verifiable science -- and note his incredible courage to put his personal reputation on the line, given the fact that his name is in the pantheon of great environmentalists of the 20th Century.
Eye-opening is an understatement. The facts presented in this book alone should warrant a careful reexamination of public opinion, government policy, and precipitate an audit of facts presented by various sides of environmental issues. Most people want to do the right thing to insure a vigorously healthy environment. What we don't need is to give over leadership of human destiny to extremist viewpoints which are founded on a belief that humans are a cancer on the face of the Earth, that technology and science are evil, and that the only solution is rolling back the clock 500 years to a pre-Columbian Garden of Eden.
Green Spirit has the courage to look at the environmental movement in a constructive way and say, "The Emperor Has No Clothes." On the issue of forests, it is as if some crazy Theodore Kaczynski is head environmental activist, public opinion trendsetter, and public policy oracle. Who can deny that the show is being run based on some kind of anti-human, anti-technology Unibomber manifesto?
