Book Description
This is the first full-scale biography of two early English queens: Emma, queen first to Aethelread and then to Cnut, and Edith, queen to Edward the Confessor. Through detailed study of these women the author demonstrates the integral place of royal queens in the rule of the English kingdom and in the process of unification by which England was made. The careers of Emma and Edith span the troubled decades of eleventh-century English history, and the book reassesses their role in the story of foreign conquests, succession dispute and political murder. Their biography is illuminated by a detailed study of the structures of tenth- and eleventh-century English Queenship - motherhood, marriage, inheritance and succession, the royal household and patronage, consecrated and holy Queenship. It moves from the partial stories told of them by others, and the unique narrative worlds they themselves commissioned, to a new and detailed biography in which Emma especially emerges as one of the most significant political actors of her day and in which both women are shown as both imprisoned by but contesting the inexorable female lifecycle. The book is an important contribution to our understanding of eleventh- and twelfth-century rule but also of medieval England in general, and, crucially, the role of women within that world.
Customer Reviews:
Very good study of two important but overlooked figures.......2005-10-12
Even though women as rulers weren't part of either the Anglo-Saxon or Norman traditions, two English women in particular changed things. Neither was a sovereign ruler but both had personalities of strength and authority. Emma (Ælfgifu after her marriage), sister of Duke Richard II of Normandy (though she carried a Frankish birth-name), was the queen first of Æthelred "the Redeless," Saxon King of England, and then of Canute, the Danish conqueror of the island. Edith, daughter of Godwine, Earl of Wessex, furthered her family's dynastic ambitions by becoming the queen of King Edward the Confessor, and thereby Emma's daughter-in-law. But this volume is considerably more than a dual biography, and more even than the "gender study" it intends to be. It delves deeply into the dynastic power structures of 11th century ruling families and the nature of royal patronage which helped keep rulers in power. The prosopographical appendix and the extensive bibliography also are excellent.
Superb!.......2005-01-04
Hats off to Pauline Stafford for even attempting such a book as this one! Both Queen Emma and Queen Edith lived in a world so long past, so shadowy to us now, that it is indeed an undertaking to explore their lives! I would love to see more of the same type of work. For those of you intrigued by these women, there are some works of fiction out there that you may enjoy: Gildenford & The Norman Pretender by Valerie Anand; A Hollow Crown by Hellen Hollick; and Lord of Sunset by Godwin Parke.
Great for the initiated!.......2002-12-03
Like the other reviewer implied, don't buy this book if you just want a quick peek into the lives of 2 English queens. This book is more appropriate for people well-acquainted with the subject matter. The book is really well-written and will be a great source for history students for years to come.
Not for the general reader.......2001-03-29
This is a wonderful study but a bit disjointed in the prose style and in the categories of analysis Stafford chose. It's less biographical and narrative than would be appropriate for those simply curious about the two women in question and presumes a lot of bacground knowledge about the period.

NASCAR 50 Greatest Drivers
Manufacturer: HarperCollins Publishers
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 006105125X |
Book Description
Americans love heroes. And NASCAR 50 Greatest Drivers showcases NASCAR's exciting heroes through bold photography and interviews that deliver a unique insight into the lives of these legends of stock car racing.
As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, NASCAR polled a group of motorsports experts to select the fifty drivers whose achievements both span and epitomize NASCAR's first half-century of accomplishment and growth.
These are the top NASCAR drivers--selected as the best of all NASCAR divisions dating back to the first NASCAR-sanctioned races in 1948. From pioneer drivers racing on the Daytona Beach-Road Course and dirt ovals to today's era of flashy colors and screaming engines running on speedways across the nation--here is the lineage of NASCAR's very best.
Some drivers had long and storied careers. Others had brief but spectacular ones. All are legends.
"These are the drivers who made and make NASCAR fans stand on their feet and cheer. These are the drivers who made NASCAR history."
-- NASCAR President, Bill France, Jr.
Since its founding in 1947, the France family has built NASCAR (the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) from a small, family-run racing organization into a $2-billion-a-year industry--the leader in motorsports entertainment. Today, over 5.5 million people a year attend NASCAR Winston Cup Series races and nearly 150 million watch the action on television.
"Looking back, I think the days of Petty and Pearson were very special for the sport. They became heroes to an awful lot of people, many of whom weren't car racing fans. They opened doors for the sport and welcomes the rest of us."
-- Darrell Waltrip
"These are the men who define the competition of our sporty."
-- NASCAR President, Bill France, Jr.
Their battles brought attention to NASCAR--their character and grit brought attention to themselves. Now, NASCAR 50 Greatest Drivers celebrated the men who set the standards and established the traditions: Pioneers, including Herb Thomas, Buck Baker, Tim Flock, Junior Johnson, Lee Petty, and NASCAR's first champion--Red Byron. Challengers like Cotton Owens, Ralph Earnhardt, and LeeRoy Yarbrough. Giants Richards Petty, David Pearson, Bobby Allison, and Ray Henrick. The New Generation--A.J. Foyt, Neil Bonnnett, Benny Parsons, and Darrell Waltrip. Future Legends, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Bill Elliott, and Rusty Wallace. And many more! All captures here, as NASCAR honors its past and present--the greatest drivers to ever strap themselves into a stock car!
Customer Reviews:
SPELL THE DRIVER'S NAMES CORRECTLY WOULD HELP.......2001-07-03
The editorial review that list all 50 greatest drivers didn't spell 'RAY HENDRICK's name correctly. Ray's name is listed as, Ray Henrick.
Please correct the Hendrick name, we are very proud of Ray and he has earned the right to at least be recognized as one of the 50 Greatest Drivers; at least you could spell his name correctly. At least give him that honor. Thank you, Mrs. Roy Hendrick
Slick, pretty, ultra-sanitized, disappointingly shallow.......1999-01-15
The book was so beautiful on the shelf that I had to buy it... Then I read the section on Curtis Turner. Ol' Curtis must have been a well-coifed choir boy, according to the way his life and driving record were presented. I leafed the rest of the book with its great photos, but that's about all there is... pretty pictures combined with a total lack of flavor. Someone at NASCAR should be ashamed of themselves...

Good insight into adapting a play to the screen........1999-01-31
A good introduction to the relationship of a screenplay to the actual images that end up on screen. Martha Coolidge is the director of the film [not the designer] and Ray Stark is the producer.

Notes of interest to carvers.......1999-12-21
For those carvers who cannot get enough patterns for Christmas carvings, I wrote this book just for you. I designed it to be easy enough for a beginner to complete the project, and challenging enough for advanced carvers to add their own interpretations to the patterns. I have tried to provide as much information as possible regarding the type of tools to use, when to use them, and paint colors to use to finish the project.

Working in full-size is a daunting prospect for most carvers. But, fortunately, some creatures are made small enough to be manageable. So it is with elves. These delightful mischievous characters of myth are traditionally very small, and have a liveliness about them that make them perfect subjects for carving. Kelley Stadelman takes the carver step-by-step through the process of creating a life sized elf. After years of teaching, Kelley makes carving easy and enjoyable. She begins with the blank and ends with decorative painting. The result is a wonderful creature in the primitive style that will adorn your home or shop. Each step is illustrated with a color photograph and descriptive caption. Patterns are included for the main project and several similar projects that are shown in the gallery. This is a great project for the beginning or intermediate carver! , 250 color photos, patterns, 8 1/2" x 11"

The Six Steps to Organizational Freedom
Do you:
*Miss important deadlines at work?
*Forget to return urgent phone calls?
*Lose papers that were “just here a minute ago”?
*Have multiple layers of sticky notes on your computer?
*Leave projects unfinished for days, weeks, or even months at a time?
If any of these sound familiar, then you are among the ranks of the disorganized—whether mildly or completely—and Liz Davenport has written this book just for you.
Order from Chaos is the organizing book for disorganized people. In six easy steps she offers a system that will help you clean up your act. She demonstrates how to clear your desk by teaching you what's trash and why, reveals what a calendar is really meant to be, and provides a no-fail system for prioritization. At the end of the day, your desk will be clear and your mind will be free to relax.
Rather than offering overcomplicated instructions for filing systems and time management plans,
Order from Chaos focuses on ease of use. There is not one person—from office assistant to CEO—who will not benefit from this straightforward, easy-to-maintain plan.
Customer Reviews:
Best organizing book I have read.......2007-07-03
I own and have read many organizing books. I'm actually fairly organized and am always looking for tips to be even more organized. This book had the most immediate and lasting impact of any organization book I have read. I read it all in one sitting the night I got it because I found it so helpful. Many items, I thought to myself "yes, I already do that and it works" and many other items, I thought, "wow, that would make a difference." I HIGHLY recommend this book.
Tackling The Chaos.......2007-06-07
This is Author Liz Davenport common-sense approach on organization by utilizing a 6 step method. It's an easy to read, easy to follow guide. I looked at several books on this subject in a bookstore before I chose this one for its straightforwardness and ease of reading.
The information is presented in an easy to comprehend way.
If you never have time to keep track of where things are in your house this book can help you to start tackling the chaos.
Good, but slightly silly.......2007-01-23
The book was very well organized and offered a great soulution. But more then anything else it made you realize just about how much "stuff" comes your way on a daily basis. To have a system that acknowleges such a large amount of "stuff" is important for your sanity. She also helps you realize that although we have a list of "to-do" items- they are usually things that must be done with no larger purpose. She suggests to incorporate in a heart-line or a single task a day that will help you move towards a much larger personal goal.
I would recommend it as a read- but take her advice with a grain of salt. As it can be very time consumming to stay "organized". And plus, there is all that surfacing information lately about how the chaos thoery ( or lack of any organization) is a more effective means at maintaining order.
instantly changes your life.......2007-01-21
I'm a pretty organized person who does not hesitate to go paperless, but running a creative business I knew I could be working more efficiently. I'm only about 70 pages into this book and already it's changed my office, as well as my general attitude toward accomplishing tasks of any kind. Refreshing and enlightening! Even if you don't use all the advice in this book, the ones you do use make it worth it.
Everyone can benefit & an entertaining read.......2007-01-17
The practical steps this book details can help anyone - including those who are organized and those that are not. It's easy to read, entertaining even, and everso practical. The principles can be applied to any size business, home management and personal lifestyle. I read many such books for my business and still managed to come away with a stack full of ideas to implement. Kudoos to Liz Davenport for this excellent guide!
Customer Reviews:
Regal is the man..........2007-05-15
I first became a fan of William Regal when he worked Bill Goldberg and showed him how a real wrestler works during a WCW Saturday Nights Main Event... It was during Bill Goldberg's "undefeated" streak... Regal worked Goldberg so hard that I immediately became a fan...
The book provides outstanding, if not painful, insight into the life and career of William Regal. Anytime Regal walks to the ring, get ready for an outstanding match...
A fairly interesting read........2007-03-31
I liked this book in that it gave the perspective of a pro wrestler who learned his trade in small cities in England. How William Regal made it to the WWE and the big time is almost by chance and luck. Regal is a talent, but his real ability is his ability to just hang in there.
I was somewhat puzzled and troubled by his drug addictions and problems with steroid use. As with any addict, you can never be sure when they are being 100% honest or when they are just setting the table for another relapse. But at any rate, this book is well worth reading. Lots of insights and behind the scenes secrets.
Ok but nothing more.......2007-02-17
I have read that this was one of the better wrestling books ever written so I read it with interest to find that it was readable but little else.
The story of a man who wanted to be a wrestler and started off at the carnivals in England then progressed to the US, where he found fame but also drugs.
I think the problem with the book was the lack of depth to the writing. We were told that Regal wrestled for years but you wouldn't know it based on the anecdotes and stories that were told (very minimal).
There is very little about the wrestlers indeed very little of substance in the book.
HELLO MY NAME IS REGAL.......2006-03-21
This book was very helpful to me as it is a mixture of two of my favorite recreational activities, wrestling and drug abuse. I am a recovering drug abuser, and am trying to get into pro wrestling. I was very impressed by what William wrote in his book.
The story about the man who beaten the demon.......2005-12-24
Actually,William Regal was one of my my favorite pro-wrestler.I like his style like an old school. He always lost the game coz he was a heel but he always got the game by his wrestling skill and peformance. That's why I bought this book. After reading this book, I don't like him but respect him. He used be a drug addicted for wrestler's problem. you know wrestlers used to tend to take painkillers to release from their own pain caused by their hard job at that time(there is strong rule for antidrug nowadays).Taking too much painkillers caused taking drug.So he became drug addicted and he didn't say any excuse for that.Drugs destroyed his body and his carrier etc. Finally he overcome his badluck and he became a superstar of sortsentertainment. He won.In this book he said he did't like a gimmick as man's man but he is a real man's man.He is one of the greatest wrestler in all time! Anyway there are many fun or interesting storys inside pro wrestling society in this book. Those are also good for wrestling funs. You will know he is not only a great wrestler but also fun guy!

Flawed Package.......2004-01-14
After returning from a tour of Budapest last summer I returned eager to pick up the story of other diplomats, besides Wallenberg, and others involved in the rescue of jews during the Holocaust. Wallenberg seems to get the most attention probably due to his tragic end but we must remember all who acted in face of great danger. People such as Anger, Lutz, Perlasca and other who were denied proper tribute in the period immediately following the war. My problem with this book is that it lacks notes and an index. Tschuy's account of Lutz published in German may include the needed footnotes but you will not find them here. Readers looking for a documented account should look elsewhere.
Well written.......2001-07-20
Well written and intense story of a true hero. Theo Tschuy spent numerous years and traveled behind the iron curtain to conduct research for this book. He met Carl Lutz personally and considered Mr. Lutz's story too tremendous to not write about
The book flows easily and is a must for history buffs everywhere. Thanks, Uncle Theo!
A diplomats reaction to the pressure of saving lives........2001-01-31
This book represents a very thorough research into the exact details of a rescue operation. As we have been fed countless stories with vastly inflated numbers, this book is a breath of fresh air. The author utilizes his research of archives held by the Swiss government and never before available. The story unfolds of the efforts made by Carl Lutz in saving lives in what is possibly the largest rescue operation of World War II. Without embellishing the heroics of Consul Lutz we are given the details of this story in a very readable fashion. This book authenticates the real number of survivors in Budapest, Hungary based upon the known number found following the war. Prior to this we have been given arbitrary numbers that always total more than the actual number of survivors. This book is a breath of fresh air for the serious reader of Holocaust activities This leaves the reader feeling that indeed there are good people in this world, and that Carl Lutz was one of them. I strongly recommend anyone interested in Holocaust or humanistic stories to read this book.
Book Description
The institutional forms of liberal democracy developed in the nineteenth century seem increasingly ill-suited to the problems we face in the twenty-first. This dilemma has given rise in some places to a new, deliberative democracy, and this volume explores four contemporary empirical cases in which the principles of such a democracy have been at least partially instituted: the participatory budget in Porto Alegre; the school decentralization councils and community policing councils in Chicago; stakeholder councils in environmental protection and habitat management; and new decentralised governance structures in Kerala. In keeping with the other Real Utopias Project volumes, these case studies are framed by an editors' introduction, a set of commentaries, and concluding notes.
