Hall of Fame member Wilbert Robinson began his career as a catcher. As a Baltimore Oriole in the 1890s the hard-nosed but congenial receiver joined John McGraw, Wee Willie Keeler, and other greats on the roughest team of the game’s toughest era. He went on to make a reputation with McGraw’s New York Giants as a great developer of pitchers. Subsequently he took over the Brooklyn Dodgers, quickly turning them into pennant winners and gradually becoming the borough’s beloved Uncle Robbie.

3 out of 5 stars Who Is This Book Really About ???.......2002-03-09

This is indeed a very interesting book. A well written and well researched book this is. I only have but one question: Who is this book really about?

I found that Wilbert Robinson, although the subject of the book, was often overshadowed by virtually everyone encountered in this effort. Robinson's Baltimore Oriole days...Overshadowed by John McGraw. Robinson's Brooklyn Dodger days...Overshadowed by John McGraw, Charles Ebbets, Babe Herman, etc. I never even once got a feeling that this book was about Wilbert Robinson. Even his accomplishments as both a player and field manager were often overshadowed by others and their accomplishments.

Either Robinson is baseball's poster child for hard luck cases, or the author(s) really missed a great opportunity. I am truly at a loss for this one. Both authors are well known Baseball authors. This effort is just not like them.

I rate this effort a 3 star, only because it still contains enough useful information that is kept in a nice clean package. Who is this book really about?

3 out of 5 stars Should be titled the "The Dodgers during the Robinson Era".......2001-05-22

This book was good, but not great. My impression was it was about the Dodgers during his time as manager. Few quotes about him from other people. Some discussion about his personal life, but the story centered around baseball during his time. There is even chapters where he is not even mentioned. The book left me with many questions, including, "How did he supercede the rough Mcgraw Orioles?". Little discussion on how he arranged his pitching staff, which historically he is given credit for. "How did develop pitchers?" Questions like that where never touched, but may have been able to give a better perception of the person he was

5 out of 5 stars This Book is an Unsung Gem.......2001-03-26

I have only one complaint about this book. I wish it was available in hard cover. Wilbert Robinson was a member of the nasty Baltimore Orioles of the 1890's and later distinguished himself as a pitching coach for his friend John McGraw's Giants and finally as the manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1914-1931. The authors give us the true story of Robinson's catch of what he thought was a baseball from an airplane. Their version is much different from what you may read in other baseball books. The object he caught was a grapefruit and, no, the one who dropped it was not Casey Stengel, but a female airplane pilot. Why the grapefruit? Read the book and find out. The reason for Robinson's feud with his old pal John McGraw is here as well along with their reconcilation many years later. The authors point out that Robinson has an underserved label as a clown due to the Dodgers reputation as being "Daffy" during his reign. As the authors point out, during those so-called Daffy years, "the Robins won more games than they lost at home and played the Giants tough. Robinson didn't win a pennant, but neither did McGraw. In Brooklyn, that mattered a lot." Wilbert Robinson is a deserving member of baseball's Hall of Fame whose career covered a very colorful period of baseball's history. This book is an unsung gem, and Wilbert Robinson is a subject worthy of a book. I only wish it was in hard cover. Thanks to authors Kavanagh and Macht. You have both done a great job and I know the subject of your book would thank you.

        Book Description

Just before World War II, French cinema reached a high point that has been dubbed the style of "poetic realism." Working with unforgettable actors like Jean Gabin and Arletty, directors such as Renoir, Carn, Gremillon, Duvivier, and Chenal routinely captured the prizes for best film at every festival and in every country, and their accomplishments led to general agreement that the French were the first to give maturity to the sound cinema. Here the distinguished film scholar Dudley Andrew examines the motivations and consequences of these remarkable films by looking at the cultural web in which they were made. Beyond giving a rich view of the life and worth of cinema in France, Andrew contributes substantially to our knowledge of how films are dealt with in history. Where earlier studies have treated the masterpieces of this era either in themselves or as part of the vision of their creators, and where certain recent scholars have reacted to this by dissolving the masterpieces back into the system of entertainment that made them possible, Andrew stresses the dialogue of culture and cinema. In his view, the films open questions that take us into the culture, while our understanding of the culture gives energy, direction, and consequence to our reading of the films. The book demonstrates the value of this hermeneutic approach for one set of texts and one period, but it should very much interest film theorists and film historians of all sorts.

              Book Description

It's no secret that new ideas fuel profitability. Even when companies hire top talent and teach best skills, few are able to affect the bottom line unless their employees can -generate and execute new concepts. It sounds like a simple principle, but finding new ideas can become a company's greatest challenge. What if we were to tell you that a little comedy theater in Minneapolis has created an incredibly effective ideation process to help businesses generate more and better ideas? In fact, the owner and executive producer of that little -theater has used this breakthrough process to help companies like 3M, Altria, Medtronic, Best Buy, Disney and hundreds of others achieve greater innovation. Now, John Sweeney is sharing that process in his new book, Innovation at the Speed of Laughter: 8 Secrets to World Class Idea Generation.

Borne from the formula used for more than 45 years to help write outlandish satirical comedy, Sweeney's book describes eight principles that guide companies, leaders and individuals to generate more and better ideas. Using client case studies, individual testimonials and a lighthearted writing style, this book is especially appealing to business leaders, team builders and companies seeking to find the "next big idea."

According to Sweeney, "Perhaps the most beneficial part of our process is the practical application portion, in which the idea gets fleshed out and prepared for implementation. The only way an idea can become profitable is by taking it from the individual mind and the brainstorming session to the company conference room and the factory floor. Our process explains how and when to implement constraints into idea generation in order to bring true gems into fruition."

As evidenced in Innovation at the Speed of Laughter, Sweeney and the Brave New Workshop continue to entertain, educate and inspire.

Years ago, John Sweeney left a successful corporate real estate career to follow his passion for performing improvisation-based comedy. Combining his insights in business with his passion for improvisation, John has become a leader in workplace innovation and corporate ideation. He is the owner of the Brave New Workshop Theatre,

This is a delightful...but practical book on how to think outside the box. The "plays" are so clever and well done, yet make a point every time.

5 out of 5 stars Way more than just a business book.......2006-06-30

This book is awesome and John Sweeney is also a fantastic speaker! I saw him speak at an event on the west coast and he was incredibly passionate, motivating, and hilarious. That's a rare combo and my group gave him a well deserved standing ovation. The book itself is humorous and offers sage advice for how to build a core culture that is innovative and improvisational. I have also found the 8 secrets of the Brave New Workshop to be helpful in my personal life. This is not a "fluffy" book like so many other professional growth/development books out there--this one packs a punch.

              5 out of 5 stars Impressed.......2005-04-02

I had the opportunity to witness John Sweeney in action at a recent company event, and after hearing him speak, I actually went out and bought his book - something I rarely, if ever, do.

It is clear that John Sweeney is quickly on his way to becoming the nation's top corporate speaker.
He sure appears to be the HOTTEST thing to hit the corporate world these days, that's for certain - and with good reason.

I can honostly foresee this Minneapolis comedy theatre owner becoming the business world's next big "it thing", both in terms of his corporate speaking profession, and also in terms of his book, rapidly gaining presence and popularity in the business world as well.

It'll be exciting to watch Mr. Sweeney grow both a speaker, and as an author, and of course, to see how soon this book gets its follow-up.

5 out of 5 stars Stands out from the crowd.......2005-03-30

The thing I really liked about this book is that it is very different from your typical business book.
For one thing, it's actually interesting.
While it's a fun and entertaining read, it's at the same time both applicable and thought provoking as well.

A second reason I greatly admire this book is that rather than just stating theories about the ideal work environment, John Sweeney goes on to actually give cold, hard facts and examples, as well as tangible and implementable ways as to how one can get from point A to point B in actually achieving the ideas which are presented. After completing the book one has realistic ideas and suggestions for how to improve a company work environment, hence increase innovation, hence productivity, and hence bottom line. And if you're like me, you also finish with a whole notepad full of other ideas you can't wait to get started on.

"Innovation at the Speed of Laughter" is a very smart book. It makes a point and makes it well, and John Sweeney gets straight to the heart of the matter without mincing words or space or hence readers' time.
The book is set aside from other books in the field because somehow John Sweeney is able to do all of the above while not patronizing his readers, being completely honest, and then making you both think and laugh all in the same book.
Highly recommend as both a usable tool and as a great read as well.

              5 out of 5 stars Get Innovated!.......2005-03-27

Anyone who wants their company to succeed should read this book. Sweeney not only shows keen insight into human nature, but he understands the importance of making everyone who works for a company feel worthy and respected, no matter what their function. Unfortunately, work environments like Sweeney's model are rare. Most often they're suppressed, which as he points out, leads to a lack or loss of innovation. If you own, run, or just work for a company, this is a must read!

We bought this book for our 6 year old, who is an older brother to our 4 year old autistic son. He loves reading it again and again because it so well describes his own brother. The sibling perspective is charming - and one that many adult authors simply fail to capture. A beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars Portrait of Love.......2005-02-15

This is one of the best books I have ever read by, for and about a sibling who has autism. Sarah, the young author of this book draws a rich portrait of her day-to-day life with her brother, Evan. She provided all the illustrations for the book and her family is a rich portrait of love and acceptance. The bright colors Sarah uses suggests hope and understanding. I like the way she explains and understands Evan's behavior; she knows he likes to chew on frozen foods and uncooked pasta because he likes the crunchy consistency. She understands Evan's way of communicating; e.g. she identifies the sounds Evan makes in response to certain circumstances, such has his happy humming when he is in water.

I loved the way Sarah used technical terms she learned from Evan's team intervention specialists. When she uses them, she says quite matter-of-factly, "All I know is we have fun." I like the way she interacts with Evan and accepts and loves him unconditionally. All of the things they do together and all of the socialization she unwittingly teaches him through natural example, she is doing it for love and because it's just plain fun. Get this with SUNDAYS WITH MATTHEW.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-12-29

When it comes to supportive, creative and POSITIVE siblings, Sarah Peralta is at the top of the list! In her new book, All About my Brother, Sarah explains her brother, Evan, to her readers with compassion, entusiasm and a true appreciation of his abilities. If I could give a gift to every individual on the spectrum , it would be a sibling as wonderful as Sarah. This book shpould be in the home of every family with a member on the spectrum. It should be read to and by brothers and sisters, neighbors, and peers, It belongs in every school library. Sarah was eight when she wrote this book, but her wisdom and optimism are ageless.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Siblings.......2002-12-24

Sarah describes everything I go through with my brother. She did a great job. My teacher loves this book too.
If someone in your family has autism you have to but this book.

                    Book Description

"The very notion of the domination of nature by man stems from the very real domination of human by human." With this succinct formulation, Murray Bookchin launches his most ambitious work, The Ecology of Freedom. An engaging and extremely readable book of breathtaking scope, its inspired synthesis of ecology, anthropology and political theory traces our conflicting legacies of hierarchy and freedom from the first emergence of human culture to today's globalized capitalism, constantly pointing the way to a sane, sustainable ecological future.

Murray Bookchin, cofounder of the Institute for Social Ecology, has been an active voice in the ecology and anarchist movements for more than 40 years. The author of numerous books and articles, he lives in Burlington, Vermont.

                    5 out of 5 stars Bookchin's most important book!.......2007-04-04

Combining radical political theory with anthropology and nature studies, "The Ecology of Freedom" is a profound exploration of the social causes behind our ecological crisis. Importantly, Bookchin argues for social activism rather than New Age mysticism as the answer to environmental problems. According to Bookchin and other social ecologists like Cindy Milstein and Brian Tokar, the domination of the planet is a mere reflection of the domination of humans caused by social systems like gerontocracy, patriarchy, capitalism, and the state. His solution: the building of a directly democratic, anti-authoritarian, participatory, egalitarian, green society. While critics of Bookchin's work may dislike the fact that he oftentimes prioritizes things like permaculture and appropriate technology over wilderness and wildlife, I nevertheless believe that his writings have enormous social value and I am deeply grateful for his ideas and legacy. Though I no doubt understand the urgency of preserving forest ecosystems and protecting endangered species, I also really empathize with Bookchin's ecotopian vision of sustainable cities. In truth, I feel that the urban ecology/forest ecology binary is a false one that should be challenged. While defending the Amazon is obviously important, fighting environmental racism is also imperative. Though I cherish the spotted owl, I also cherish working-class communities of color and equally value their struggles to access organic food, clean air, and safe drinking water. As such, I fully agree with the social ecologist libertarian municipalist position that social justice issues are environmental issues and vice versa. Murray Bookchin, who last year passed away, will be sorely missed by the many progressive activists whose lives have been enriched by his brilliant books. That said, I hope that AK Press continues to publish more of his important work.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best and most important works by the perhaps the greatest radical mind of our time.......2006-09-15

Bookchin's 'The Ecology of Freedom,' is a masterpiece pure and (not at all) simple. If you are interested in the real roots of the ecological and social crises we as a planet are submerged in, than this is a book whose ideas you will want to read and debate.

Combine this work with his other pivotal works and the invaluable commentary provided by Bookchin's long time colleague and companion Janet Biehl and you have what is very liklely the most important and comprehensive body of radical social theory since Marx -- fortunately with none of Marx's blindspots, shortsightedness, or problems. A real treasure and filled with fascinating and challenging ideas.

                      Book Description

This book focuses on wildlife populations and their welfare in the United States and Canada as affected by human cultures from the European and North American Stone Age to contemporary times, within the framework of relevant global developments. It traces changes in wildlife habitats and populations, and the evolving patterns of human response to wildlife endangerment in industrial societies. The underlying assumption is that the evaluation of successes and failures in wildlife conservation will provide guidance toward ultimate success in nationwide and worldwide restoration and maintenance of native wild species in their appropriate habitats.

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A useful enough textbook on wildlife conservation in North America.......2007-09-15

This is an introductory textbook for undergraduates who do not have any specialized knowledge in the biological or social sciences. It seems to be aimed largely for forestry, game management and similar programs. Unlike many wildlife texts, it takes seriously the human values involved in wildlife conservation. However, the authors are two biologists, and despite making a good effort to be inclusive they don't have any social scientific background that might help them discuss (say) the economics of the endangered species act or the politics of agencies such as the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The first half of the book has more background on the history of European settlement than is probably necessary in such a text. In addition, it includes information about the social context of conservation, including the changing nature of farms, an overview of the industrial revolution, and similar topics. I would hope that these things were already familiar to college students, but perhaps I misjudge the authors' audience here.

The narrative is broad, not deep - - the authors describe a lot but do not present much discussion of causes. They also provide few critiques of policy, or suggestion of alternatives. They do a good job including both the US and Canada, but perhaps most disappointingly they provide little analysis of variation between the US and Canada or among states and provinces. This descriptive nature of the text is a weakness for the general reader, but presumably the professor provides this material in class if this book is used as a text.

All in all, it's a useful book but it probably could have been quite a bit better.
