Book Description
This is the only book to describe the real person behind the natural horseman. Many people might only know the persona in front of the audience, but behind it all is a real man with a history that has never been told before. This book is the story of John Lyons.
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting.......2004-01-29
I thought this book was interesting, just because it is the only book that is written about the man and not the horse training principles he usually writes about. Also, if you pay close attention to the last chapter you can find plenty of "behind the scenes" information if you read between the lines. He certainly has had a rough life and been through a lot more than I thought. And although I thought he had trained horses all his life, that wasn't the case. Definately worth reading and the pictures are gorgeous.
Master.......2003-12-24
I think this book was very insightful regarding a man famous for his work with horses. I sometimes got the feeling that the 'dirt' was being left out, but the book was entertaining and insightful nonetheless.
Spiritual journey?.......2003-12-01
Not a particularly skillful accounting of John's journey. Not particularly insightful, either. I found myself wondering about what was left out of the book. More behind the scenes information would have given us more with which to connect to John.
John Lyons is the Most Amazing Horseman in America.......2003-11-20
John Lyons is an incredible horseman. If you've been to his symposium or watched his tapes, you will buy this book to learn more about him. If you don't know him, don't start with this book, because you need to see the man himself in action, see how gently and respectfully he treats horses, how quickly and calmly they learn from him, to know why this book would be interesting. His voice and manner are so reassuring that when I go out, I leave his symposium tapes that I bought on his website on for my dog. I wish his story could have been written by a truly masterful writer and become a best-seller. This book gets the facts across but could have been deeper and more complex, like the man.

"Use it or lose it.".......2007-01-24
Believing that the "occurrence of neurodegenerative disease is less marked in people who have busy and varied lifestyles"--i.e., those who keep their bodies AND their brains active--Tom Sheldon, author and expert in "bioinformatics" and artificial intelligence, has devised a book of one hundred fifty "puzzles for a younger mind."
While people are not stopping me on the street to exclaim about my "younger mind," I can attest to the fact that these are terrific puzzles, a great way to fill odd moments of time--those periods too short to read. For those unfamiliar with sudoku, each square puzzle consists of a grid containing nine squares, each of which contains nine small boxes within it--81 boxes for the whole puzzle. The objective of the puzzle is to fill in the boxes so that each horizontal line of overall puzzle contains the numbers 1 - 9, each vertical column contains 1 - 9, and each of the nine squares contains numbers 1 - 9. Some numbers are given in advance so that puzzler can use them to build on, the easy puzzles containing more given numbers than the "fiendish" ones.
The book is well designed. Approximately 5" x 8" in size, each page contains only one large puzzle, providing plenty of space for writing numerical possibilities into each square on the more difficult puzzles. Four levels of difficulty and an introduction containing helpful hints for solving puzzles provide plenty of options for the beginner, and the most difficult level will challenge even the seasoned sudoku fan. An answer key is in the back of the book, especially helpful for the beginner who may want to check some decisions as s/he goes along.
With a binding sturdy enough to permit folding the book in half to work on the puzzles on the left side, the book is inexpensive and easy to tote around in purse or briefcase. A few pages of blank forms would be helpful, and some might prefer a spiral binding, but this is a terrific book, and few fans will quibble about those minor issues in view of the puzzles' excellence. Experts may want to check the author's two other offerings: _Sudoku Genius_ and _Sudoku Master Class_. n Mary Whipple

Book Description
Who is the smartest? The truth will be revealed when you, your friends, and your family have an entertaining competition using these more than 200 brainteasers. The quizzes come in varying levels of difficulty, and each of the nineteen sections starts with a tangram challenge and ends with a score sheet. In between, the intriguing options range from a French picture puzzle from the 1890s (find the two drinkers in the image) to mental conundrums such as this: Two individuals are born in the same place at the same time. After 50 years, both die, also in the same place. Nevertheless, one of the two lived a hundred days longer than the other. How did this remarkable situation come about? It's fun for everyone.
Answer :
Both people used to travel around the world once a year. But one traveled westwards and the other eastwards. The person traveling west gained one day on each trip, while the person traveling east lost a day on each trip due to the different time zones. In 50 years, that amounts to 100 days.

Great textbook.......2007-05-09
Its a good text book. Not too complicated to read, class is kind of a pain. If this is a program requirement, struggle your way through it. If its not a requirement, don't take this class, its annoying and frustrating.

In Pam Houston's can't-put-down collection of essays, A Little More About Me, she describes her globe-trotting adventures spanning five continents with candor and humor, but it's the emotional journey that hits home. We travel vicariously as Houston treks through the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan or dozes while a pride of lions passes her Botswana campsite, but we're right there with her when she talks about her anger-filled childhood, her lifelong obsession with weight, and of course, a penchant for strong, silent types. Her willingness to put herself at risk is her way of coping with these insecurities--each victory on skis or in hiking boots a triumph over those nasty demons. A self-professed nature nut (this is a woman who owns her own horses), Houston is addicted to the next challenge (she's broken seven bones and has twice had search parties sent out for her). Through self-reflection and therapy, however, she's come to realize that saying no to a dangerous endeavor can be just as empowering as conquering any class V rapid. When she opts not to continue a particularly tricky climb in her essay "On (Not) Climbing the Grand Teton," she explains that "true success [lies] within the failure, in listening to my fear and standing firm in my desire to go back down." Houston's writing is straightforward and doesn't get mired in innuendo--she tells it like it is. And because she's not afraid to admit her fears and mistakes, we truly root for her to achieve the balance she's seeking. Though some might find it hard to empathize with someone whose concessions include drawing the line at camping out in 20-degree-below temperatures rather than 60-below, on a fundamental level we can relate. Our coping mechanisms might not be as detrimental to our health, but they are just as real. The powerful messages in A Little More About Me are well worth pondering. --Jill Fergus
Book Description
The road I've taken these five years has been a long and twisted one, writes Pam Houston in the first piece of this stirring collection. That journey takes the acclaimed author of Cowboys Are My Weakness and Waltzing the Cat across five continents, through forty whitewater rivers, over three thousand miles of backcountry hiking trails, on more than four hundred planes. But whatever her destination -- the Alaskan outback or the mountains of Bhutan -- these are the starting points for her personal emotional journey.
Through her stories we meet some good dogs, a few good men, and the occasional grizzly. Ultimately, Houston's adventures -- and her clear-eyed reflections upon them -- prove what she has always suspected: fiction has nothing on real life.
Customer Reviews:
Varied Collection.......2006-11-12
This book is a collection of essays by outdoors writer Pam Houston. The essays included range from backwoods adventures in Alaska and Pennsylvania, travel narratives from Bolivia to Bhutan, as well as personal analyses on self-image and childhood memoir. There are stories about lovers, an ex-husband, and lots of dogs.
I almost put the book down as soon as I started it--oh no, I thought--not a book of dog stories! Being allergic to dogs, I can't be a dog person, so I have very little patience for those who can't seem to find anything else to talk about besides their dogs. Fortunately, Houston takes up many more topics besides dogs in this book, and she even has a few interesting things to say about her dogs. More interesting for me, though, were her essays exploring why she seeks out danger, and why she is dissatisfied with her body. Although I love being outdoors and many types of outdoor activities myself, like hiking, camping and skiing, I never could understand what makes some people think outdoor activities need to be dangerous or physically challenging in order to be enjoyable. Isn't it enough just to be out there, breathing the fresh air and listening to the sounds of the forest? Not for Houston, at least not in the past. She always felt compelled to push the envelope, hiking in grizzly country after dark without a flashlight, dangling on ropes from pinnacles, rushing down impossible white water courses. These essays have provided me with insight into what risk-takers are looking for when they venture outdoors (I loved the tale about the experienced mountain climbing instructor who couldn't identify a grouse or tell the difference between a bull or cow moose). Now I much better understand why certain impossibly dangerous trails or remote campsites seem to attract so many outdoors people, even when safer trails and campsites with equal or better locations or views are readily available.
Houston also delves into questions of bodies and self-images. Apparently, she considers herself fat, a condition that would seem highly unlikely given all the physical activity that she engages in. She relates how her mother always used to nag her about her weight, and how she internalized the notion that she was fat as a result. Her descriptions of what it is like to feel fat in a thin world are quite insightful. Sure, everyone, or at least every woman, has some aspects of her physical appearance that she is not satisfied with. The difference with overweight, however, is that other people seem to have less sympathy for overweight as an aesthetic defect, since overweight people are assumed to have control over the weight, control that people with other aesthetic problems like crooked teeth, oddly shaped noses, thin hair, etc. do not have. It was striking to hear how often Houston worries about her appearance--surely others don't notice her apparent defects because they're too busy obsessing about their own. But perhaps she's right--perhaps overweight people have a more accurate idea of how others judge their appearance after all, sadly enough.
Just about any woman will find topics of interest in the book. Some essays may be more interesting than others for certain individuals, but overall, the essays are generally well written and go beyond simple travel or adventure writing to present some insightful thought as well.
not like her fiction, but still worth reading.......2006-05-28
"Cowboys are my weakness" is one of my favorites of all time...this book just doesn't show the same sparkle. I gave it 3 stars because Pam Houston not at her best is still better then many predictable novelists (the romance novels and thrillers that are a dime a dozen).
Some of the descriptions seemed dry and uninspired, but overall makes you wish you could be there. Of course there is a self-centered theme throughout. At first it was a little annoying, but she certinally does have a reason to share her life. Her adventures makes you think of things differently and the fact in modern society we really don't have much to justify complaining about. We may learn a thing or 2 from those in less developed countries about happiness and history.
Definitely an ecclectic mix of stories and people. Moments of brillance... Worth the read, but just don't expect it to be like her fiction.
If you've read her before, you'll like this.......2003-04-18
A rambling collection of essays that indeed reveal much about the author of her quirky books. Provides insight into who she is, why she would risk life and limb just to prove a point, how she defines 'home,' her relationships with men and dogs and trucks...
Goes down easy.
The Title Says it All.......2003-04-05
Me, me, me, me, me, me, me, and oh, did I forget ME?
Inspirational writing from a very independent woman.......2002-06-27
Houston's description of the Ardeche region in France in "Waves Every Color of Harvest" was enough to make me hail the next taxi to the airport - and I HATE to fly. This collection of essays, of which many have already appeared in various popular publications, covers the gamut from adventure travel to self-analysis to the love of a good dog. Read this if you're stuck at your boring 9-5 desk and dream of life on the open road. And then rejoice in the convenience of indoor plumbing.
Book Description
In The Tribute of Blood Peter M. Beattie analyzes the transformation of army recruitment and service in Brazil between 1864 and 1945, using this history of common soldiers to examine nation building and the social history of Latin America’s largest nation. Tracing the army’s reliance on coercive recruitment to fill its lower ranks, Beattie shows how enlisted service became associated with criminality, perversion, and dishonor, as nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Brazilian officials rounded up the “dishonorable” poor—including petty criminals, vagrants, and “sodomites”—and forced them to serve as soldiers.
Beattie looks through sociological, anthropological, and historical lenses to analyze archival sources such as court-martial cases, parliamentary debates, published reports, and the memoirs and correspondence of soldiers and officers. Combining these materials with a colorful array of less traditional sources—such as song lyrics, slang, grammatical evidence, and tattoo analysis—he reveals how the need to reform military recruitment with a conscription lottery became increasingly apparent in the wake of the Paraguayan War of 1865–1870 and again during World War I. Because this crucial reform required more than changing the army’s institutional roles and the conditions of service, The Tribute of Blood is ultimately the story of how entrenched conceptions of manhood, honor, race, citizenship, and nation were transformed throughout Brazil.
Those interested in social, military, and South American history, state building and national identity, and the sociology of the poor will be enriched by this pathbreaking study.

Drafting the Dregs Into the Nation.......2005-03-14
This well-researched book breaks new ground in Brazil's military and social history. It explores the paradox of using the army to build national identity with forced enlistment from marginal social groups---including convicts, vagrants and homosexuals. The army became a feared fighting force, but mostly by crushing internal rebels and smaller neighbors like Paraguay, not first-rate opponents. Brazilians came to dread military service, avoiding it whenever possible, and eventually a less arbitrary recruitment system emerged. Beattie paints a convincing picture of the evolution of a major institution in modern Brazil. His broad approach to evidence, deploying an impressive array of conventional and innovative sources, further displays the potential of this new military history. T. Whigham's "I Die With My Country" and "The Paraguayan War" have important new material on the War of the Triple Alliance. The army's bloody role in suppressing dissent is covered, often brilliantly, in R. Levine, "Vale of Tears," T. Diacon, "Millenarian Vision, Capitalist Reality," and especially E. da Cunha, "Rebellion in the Backlands." S. Caulfield, "In Defense of Honor" is another fresh view of Brazilian society in the same era, but Beattie really does offer something new.

Wonderful Look at the Institution of the Presidency.......2002-06-01
Former special assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson, George Reedy, examines the growing isolation of the president from the country's citizens, the air of unreality, and the virtually unchecked power that works to corrupt any man who holds the office of the President.
Reedy describes the role of the president and his growing and out-of-touch staff, the importance of images and the media, and looks to the disastrous consequences that can result.
Reedly also offers what he sees as possible solutions to the problems of the presidency.
This is essential reading on the strengths and weaknesses of our most important political institution.

Book Description
What does a good, long ramble in the woods reveal to us about our shared human condition? How do we gracefully shed our civilized layers of defensive behavior, our fear of discovery, of the unknown or once-known but forgotten? Award-winning poet and outdoorsman Sydney Lea vividly explores these issues in this compelling, refreshing and humorous memoir.
Sydney Lea lives, writes and roams the woods in Vermont.
