                  Book Description

To a generation of fans, Willie Mays was the greatest ballplayer they had ever seen. The prowess and speed of the Say Hey Kid were unmatched on the diamond before his time, prompting Joe DiMaggio to label him, “the closest you can come to perfection.” He was the first player to hit fifty home runs and steal twenty bases in a single season. Mays played for the New York Giants (1951–1957), San Francisco Giants (1958–1972), and New York Mets (1972–1973), and in his glory days with the Giants he not only set the major league mark for consecutive seasons by appearing in 150 games or more but by winning his two MVP awards a record twelve seasons apart. When Mays retired, he ranked third in career home runs (behind Aaron and Ruth), a record of 660 soon to be surpassed by Mays’s godson, Barry Bonds.

This twenty-fifth anniversary edition of the only ballplayer biography ever named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Willie’s Time: Baseball’s Golden Age, restores to print Charles Einstein’s vivid biography of one of the game’s foremost legends. With a new preface from the author, this volume replays the most dramatic moments of the Say Hey Kid’s career—from the 1951 Miracle Giants to the Amazing Mets of 1973—and takes us inside the lives of Ruth, DiMaggio, Aaron, Durocher, and others along the way. Einstein offers a compelling and complete look at Mays: as a youth in racist Birmingham, a triumphant symbol of African American success, a sports hero lionized by fans, and yet all the while, still a very human figure destined to play for two decades amid baseball’s Golden Age.

This book is a great history lesson not just of baseball but of the times Willie played. There are many memories of the "Giants" of yesterday.

5 out of 5 stars a magical book about a truly great baseball player.......2005-04-27

"Willie's Time," by Charles Einstein, is a magical read, in my opinion. Einstein basically starts when Willie made it to the "Bigs," and he weaves history into the phenomenal career of Willie Mays, who is arguably the greatest baseball player that ever lived.

I started playing Little League baseball in 1960, and I played center. Willie Mays was my hero. Mays could-and did-do it all: (1)hit for average, (2)hit with power, (3)run the bases, (4)play defense, and (5)win games for his team with intangibles. Many players challenged Willie's arm, and Mays threw the majority of them out.

To attempt to compare drug-enhanced players of today with Willie Mays is ludicrous. They are mere children compared to Willie.

Today (27 May 2005), Major League Baseball no longer exists (to me). But "Willie's Time" was a wonderful reminder of not only a great baseball player, but also a time when Major League Baseball was fun. (RIP, Major League Baseball.)

In my opinion, you will NOT be disappointed if you buy this book.

Elizabeth Taylor, an actress and sex symbol who is one of the most sought-after celebrities by the media, has published several books during her lifetime. Elizabeth Takes Off: On Weight Gain, Weight Loss, Self-image & Self-esteem is one of them. I first picked up this book because of the words "self-image & self-esteem" in the title, rather than the "weight gain, weight loss" portion. Well, it turns out the book would be an excellent source for those who want to lose weight, but that was not what I was interested in.

Nevertheless, the book itself is highly commendable. Even if you're not planning to go on a diet - like me - the first half of the book is still worth a read. Miss Taylor writes briefly and frankly about events that occurred in her life which affected her self image and consequently, self esteem. She writes how being a senator's wife caused her to divulge into a period of extreme inactivity and boredom which unconsciously turned her to overeating. She also mentions the dire effects of binging, nibbling, or grapple-snapping. Unlike those strictly diet-focused books, Elizabeth Takes Off offers insightful explanations and reasons for weight gain while also presenting a dietary method which to me looks superb.

If the first half analyzes the impact of events in Miss Taylor's life, the latter half offers diet menus, recipes and exercises that could help keep your body in shape. The Taylor-made recipes mainly consist of nutritious food, notably fruits and vegetables that have low calories. Her daily menus seem reasonable, diverse and easily followable because it is not a starving course, but a replacement for your typical diet. The exercise portion contains several beneficial stretches which, again, are also simple and effective.

Overall, I found this book to be a smooth, easy read. I also found myself nodding to many of the things that Miss Taylor says in this excellent book - which needs to be more in circulation today.

White a huge plus." I don't know if Aagaard left it at that without looking at Lanka's line, but after 11... b5 Black already is better. There are a number of other examples of this carelessness (I guess that's what it is) as well. I realize that mistakes in analysis can be found in most every book, but the number of mistakes seem high for a 128 page book.
I figure that if a mere 17-year-old-patzer such as myself (about 2000 USCF) can find these errors, a grandmaster could find many more (well, then again, in some cases I had the help of Fritz).
Despite this objection, "Easy Guide" shouldn't be discarded, as it is a well-presented, eloquent "easy guide" to the Panov-Botvinnik. But one should play over the lines with a high degree of skepticism.

I think this is a very interesting book! While I was reading this book, I thought that some of the ideas were very good. Until, I played them in some games. Then I re-read the books, and noticed that some of the lines in the early chapters are no better that a draw for white against weaker players and losses against stronger players. These are lines that I was lead into by black.

Since, I am only an average player, I can not truly say if some of these lines are really bad. But this book did not show me that they are very good lines.

I was hoping for some winning variations for white when I started to read this book.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!.......2000-05-16

Although this book is called "Easy Guide to the Panov-Botvinnik Attack" it is anything but an "Easy Guide". Rather, it is in the words of the book itself a "detailed, systematic coverage". The book presupposes an already existing knowledge of the Caro-Kann and the Panov. I am not saying that this is a bad book. For those with extensive and expert knowledge of chess it may very well be a great book, I don't know. But one thing I do know is that it is NOT an "Easy Guide", don't be fooled by the title when you buy this book!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but could have been better........2000-05-12

If you want to learn the specifics of the Panov-Botvinnik Attack, you really can't do without this book--perfect though it may not be. But when an author looks really deeply into IQP positions--e.g. as Baburin does in Winning Pawn Structures--it can make Aagard's treatment look somewhat shallow and offhanded by comparison.

5 out of 5 stars This book will help you beat (well, draw with) GMs!.......1999-10-01

Let me tell you a story. I'd been looking for a long time for ways to liven up my play against the Caro-Kann. I was dissatisfied with the Classical Variation (3Nc3), but at the same time was afraid to take on the IQP inherent in the Panov-Botvinnik. Then this book was published and it gave me the confidence to have a go. The result, in about my third of fourth outing with the Panov-Botvinnik, was a draw with Grandmaster Tukmakov (2585) at Lausanne, Switzerland. This was in May 1999 when my FIDE rating was 2096 - almost 500 points lower than his. Much - most? - of the credit belongs to Aagaard's book. He doesn't try to get you to memorise long lines of moves - rather, he teaches ideas. It would be going too far to call it a comprehensive manual on the IQP, but I'm sure it would improve most people's abilities at handling IQP middlegames, as well as possible resulting endgames. My game against Tukmakov will probably not prove atypical. The GM didn't follow one of the main lines discussed by Aagaard, but from what I'd learned I was able to come up with perfectly reasonable moves. Unknown to me - but I'm sure appreciated by my opponent - we transposed to a line from the Karpov-Kamsky FIDE world championship match, which is in the book. The result was a messy sac by me which Tukmakov was unable to refute over the board, and he eventually acquiesced to a perpetual. I was, to put it mildly, well-chuffed (although I've since become a little more realistic about my achievment on finding numerous flaws in the game at home). Anyway, this has been a very personalised review, but I wanted to get across what this book has done for my game - and could do for others'.

                                  Book Description

Thirty-five million individual investors jumped into the stock market for the first time during the late 1990s without asking questions about the stocks they were buying. When the bubble burst and the large number of accounting scandals began to grow, most investors didn’t know where to turn or whom to trust. Now it has become more important than ever for investors to take matters into their own hands.

Financial Fine Print: Uncovering a Company’s True Value lets individual investors in on the secrets that seasoned professional investors use when they evaluate a potential investment. Buried deep in a company’s quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) reports are the real clues to a company’s financial health: the footnotes. At many large companies, these footnotes can run for more than 30 pages and for some corporations have doubled in the past five years, making them simply too important for investors to ignore.

Financial Fine Print spells out exactly what investors need to look for within the footnotes of a company’s reports in order to make better, more informed decisions. By using numerous examples of actual footnotes that have appeared in SEC documents, the book teaches investors in easy-to-understand language ways to spot – and avoid – future Enrons and Worldcoms (and Tycos and Adelphias and HealthSouths). For any investor who has spent the past three years watching their investments shrink and has begun to think about getting back into the market, this book provides the critical tools that investors need to know to avoid getting burned once again.

As an investor and equity columnist, I often use 10-K's and 10-Q's to form an opinion on the financial health of companies. I bought Financial Fine Print with the hope it would improve my analyses by helping me tune in on the most important figures and red flags.

Much to my disappointment, this book provided very little help. Many of the chapters were filled with "fluff," discussing trivial details about the history of SEC regulation and not getting to the main points. After reading through entire chapters, only a few (sometimes obvious) financial red flags were covered.

A major problem is that the author does not distinguish between financial chicanery and benign transactions. Particularly the chapters on CEO perks and off-balance sheet entities leave the reader more cognizant of such items, but without any clue how to react to them. Not every company with an off-balance sheet arrangement is on the brink of an Enron-like crisis, but the author might lead you to assume so. With so many references to Enron and Quest, the entire book seems to be written to cash in on their collapse.

I'm not sure what audience this book was written for, whether the author was targeting uninformed home gamers or investors with intermediate/advanced stock market knowledge. It seems to be aimed towards the murky middle of both crowds.

The bottom line is that this book might carry some merit for retail investors just getting their feet wet when it comes to 10-K's. Some of the information may be handy depending on your knowledge level. This is one of those books that you will either love it or hate it.

Financial Fine Print is very good for someone new to analyzing financial statements. It is clear and not extremely technical. However, for most practitioners, you probably already know everything in this book already as notes to the financial statements are usually covered in accounting classes taken in college or in training at a financial firm.

A thoroughly enlightening and enjoyable book. Read it and you will lower the chances of losing money due to white collar crimes in the future. The example footnotes serve as guidelines for what to watch out for in a report.

Very well written and a good read as far as financial books go. Focus is on investing time and effort in analyzing footnotes in 10K and 10Q statements, a much underappreciated aspect of finding good values and avoiding value pitfalls.

Although this book does great work in stressing the importance of this subject and works as an important motivator, it does not provide lay investor with any new tools or statistical guidelines to uncover a company's value.

Learning To Be Me tells the true story of a womanÂ's twenty-three-year battle with, and ultimate recovery from, an extreme form of bulimia—the most misunderstood and invisible of the eating disorders.

With an honest conversational style, Author Jocelyn Golden recounts the uncomfortable realities of suffering from an eating disorder since the age of thirteen, when she first vomited her breakfast into a bush on the way to school. Through personal experience, Golden shares the journey of violent self-abuse and the many humiliations she faced as her cries for help went unheard or were misunderstood. Eventually, Golden was completely reliant on and immersed in the disease, and she later underwent two life-altering surgeries. After living with bulimia for years, Golden tells the inspirational tale of how she found the strength, motivation, and support to seek the help that finally brought her into recovery.

Today in the United States the eating disorder epidemic remains largely a silent and hidden crisis. Whether you are a sufferer, friend, family member, or spouse, Learning To Be Me will teach you to either give yourself or a loved one the gift of self-love as you continue on the journey to recovery.

Jocelyn Golden did a great job writing this book. It really was one of the best I've read on bulimia. The main character is trapped in a house with people who are supposed to love and comfort her but are incredibly and selfishly indifferent to her yet intolerably critical. Overcoming such odds really is remarkable and stands as an example for others. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOOK I HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR.......2007-10-03

I had been looking for a book that would help me understand the thought process behind a bulimic's behavior, in an effort to help a family member. I wanted to get inside the head of a bulimic, I wanted to FEEL what a bulimic does, no other book did this for me - Jocelyn Golden's "Learning to be me" did! I've read many bulimia books in my quest to educate myself, but none gave me the insight I gained by reading Ms. Golden's book. I highly recommend "Learning To Be Me" to any sister, mother or other relative trying to help a loved one. It gave me the courage to confront my relative, one more time, and present her with support and treatment options even though I know it may sever our relationship - I love her that much. I thank Ms. Golden for the difference her talented writing has made in my life and for portraying the facts clearly and with emotion.

I would love to see another book by this author.

I read this memoir and realized very quickly, that Memoir was an accurate category for this book. It certainly does not belong in self help/recovery.
Jocelyn's narrative keeps repeating descriptions of her terrible life in a way that makes this tragic disease seem petty. I have endured this dis-ease for 23 plus years and I found Aimee Lu's book "Life after an Eating Disorder" so full of hope and rcovery and revelation about this disease.
I found this book to be full of triggers and narcissistic thoughts. It is a "Go Ask Alice" for eating disorders.
""Sensing the Self" is also fantastic, but a little more clinical. If you are looking for recovery, read about recovery. If you are looking for a description of how tragic and destructive and miserable an addiction can be, read a memoir.

The author Jocelyn Golden has a great website and even took the time to respond to my email question! The book inspired me to seek treatment at an inpatient facility after 22 years of bulimia. I encourage others suffering from this disease to read the book and seek counseling and treatment. I am inspired and am encouraged and have hope that I can face the bulimic beast inside!

                                  Book Description

Robert Jackall's Moral Mazes offers an eye-opening account of how corporate managers think the world works, and how big organizations shape moral consciousness. Based on extensive interviews with managers at every level of two industrial firms and of a large public relations agency, Moral Mazes takes the reader inside the intricate world of the corporation. Jackall reveals a world where hard work does not necessarily lead to success, but where sharp talk, self-promotion, powerful patrons, and sheer luck might. Cheerfully-bland public faces mask intense competition in this world where people hide their intentions, and accountability often depends on the ability to outrun mistakes. In this topsy-turvy world, managers must bring often unforgiving technology and always difficult people together to make money, an uncompromising task demanding continual compromises with conventional truths. Moral questions become merely practical concerns and issues of public relations. Sooner or later, managers find themselves wondering how to act in such a world and still maintain a sense of personal integrity. This brilliant, sometimes disturbing, often wildly funny study of corporate thinking, decision-making, and morality presents compelling real life stories of the men and women charged with running the businesses of America. It will interest anyone concerned with how big organizations actually function, or with the current moral malaise in our public life.

5 out of 5 stars Objective, sad, but true.......2002-05-06

"Moral Mazes" is an extensive, award-winning and highly accurate sociological portrait of life in the modern corporation, an academic precursor, so to speak, of the "Dilbert" cartoon strip. Unlike many other writers on this topic, Jackall doesn't resort to Marxist rants, but rather, compares modern corporate culture to the "Protestant" work ethic most Americans are raised into.

Jackall's inquiry, based on in-depth interviews with managers themselves, is broad in scope, and it is hard to generalize. Within about 200 pages, he covers the social circles of the corporation, cronyism, bad decisionmaking and public relations, to name a few. He discovers that corporations, at the upper levels at least, resemble a king's court more than a meritocratic organization. The essential work of a manager is not "management" or "leadership," but constantly making the right friends and adopting the correct posture. Anyone who has worked in such a setting, or knows people in such a field, will be able to relate instantly, although it can be argued that Jackall did not need to spend years of ethnographic research to reach this conclusion.

This book is not for everyone, as Jackall must conclude that "ethics" as practiced by managers is nothing more than "survival" and ambition for one's own "advantage." While such a diagnosis may seem harsh, it is difficult to rationally explain recent events in the marketplace, such as the Enron scandal, without concluding that corporate executives have a moral compass that differs from that of the everyday person.

Contrary to what a layman may think, Jackall makes no moral judgments of his own, although readers most certainly will. The title itself can be misinterpreted by people not familiar with sociology. The "morals" Jackall discusses are not ethics (which he attacks in his intro), but Durkheim's "occupational morality." While he does study corporations, he calls the focus of this study the "bureaucratic ethos" (not "corporate ethos"). Anyone who's read history (or the local newspaper) already knows bureacracy can create its own rules, from governments (i.e., the Nazis and the Holocaust) to religions (i.e., Catholicism and child molesters).

Surprisingly, by portraying executives' lives as frought with anxiety, guilt, "senseless" work and no reliable means to measure their self worth, Jackall may cause an intelligent reader to actually feel sorry for them. Reading though his interviews with executives, there's little question that many executives began to regard him as a "Father Confessor" to admit their deeds.

At the same time, Jackall offers an alternative theory for why the American work ethic has all but vanished: if people are promoted based soley on their manipulative social skills, why would anyone want to subscribe to the old work ethic?

                                  2 out of 5 stars A Cynical Autopsy.......2001-02-23

Robert Jackall strings together a series of worse-case scenarios gleaned from a very limited control group of corporations. He skillfully manipulates language (e.g., calling loyalty to one's boss 'fealty') in order to deliver what he thinks is an indictment of bureaucracy. He does have some interesting things to say about the press, but this occurs near the end and comprises less than a page of material. Save your time. Read something worthwhile like Thomas Sowell's classic "A Conflict of Visions." Jackall's book is not worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Throughly depressing but an absolute must read.......1998-10-07

This book ought to be required reading for all MBA candidates and would be corporate middle managers as an intro into the sad and dysfunctional but real corporate world. In numerous scenes that will be instantly familiar to anyone who has worked at a Fortune 200 firm the book recounts numerous instances of failed and misdirected management. Depressing because it reveals the underbelly of corporate America and capitalism but readable in its accurate portrayal. Occasionally at times slow (particularly towards the end when he presumably is tired of writing) it does a clinical autopsy on management. Like watching a train wreck you are compelled to keep reading even as you realize the denouement. If you think that ignorance is bliss - give this a miss - on the other hand, if you are a frustrated idealist and need proof that in order for evil to overcome good, good only has to do nothing, it is worth the investment. An excellent primer on why we need ethics courses but more importantly ethical actions.

This book is filled with ecological, geological and historical information. The work is superbly written to be enjoyed and understood by all readers. The artwork presented within the book is reason enough to own the book. Add to this the fact that you are supporting a great cause and probably gaining information you have never thought about before and you have a real winner. I am still amazed at the way Riki manages to get the names(sometimes in Latin)of all the flora and fauna included in the text while still maintaining the reader's interest.
