Book Description
Many Europeans have dreamed of a film studio able to challenge Hollywood on its own ground. Only one post-war company has come close-- PolyGram Filmed Entertainment.
This book is a brilliant account of the life and death of PolyGram Films seen through the eyes of its British President, Michael Kuhn. He describes the beginnings of the company, in London and LA, in the heyday of the '80s and its subsequent meteoric growth throughout the next decade.
In the words of Sir Alan Parker, "Michael Kuhn is the visionary who created the most successful global company outside of Hollywood. He achieved this with a most unusual premise: championing original and creative work, coupled with imaginative marketing and distribution, and remarkable honesty and fiscal accountability. He failed, of course, but he very nearly pulled it off. Kuhn's candid first-hand account of PolyGram Films' success and demise is a must read for anyone interested in the brutally sharp end of the business of film, or anyone who ever wondered why the films emanating from the Hollywood machine are mostly crap."
Combining critical acclaim and popular success with such films as Wild at Heart, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Fargo and Notting Hill, PolyGram Films garnered ten Oscars from 1991 until 1998, when its potential was unexpectedly and unaccountably destroyed.
This is not only a story of deals won and lost in a ruthless world peopled by titans, sharks, peacocks and all the usual suspects, but a real business adventure that changed the structure of the global film industry.
The book includes valuable appendices: The Players; Chronology; Timeline; Film List; Film Credits; Awards; PolyGram Companies; Corporate Structure.

True or False
Women in Qwill's Life
Chronological Order of Events
Qwill's Living Quarters
Crimes and Victims
Dining Out
Koko and Yum Yum
And more
With a special note to the reader from Lilian Jackson Braun herself, it's the perfect gift for fans who want to test their knowledge of Cat Who, What, When, Where, and Why!
Customer Reviews:
A Great Summer read.......2004-05-16
I have been a fan of the Lilian Jackson Braun series for many years, and received this book as a gift a few weeks ago. I enjoyed the quizzes, as they were not of the typical quiz book variety. Each quiz appealed to the me as a reader of the series. My only regret is I did not buy this book for myself sooner. A great book to take on vacation...
A must for your bookshelf!.......2004-05-07
KoKo would be knocking this book off the shelf, yowling, "Pay attention! You must have this!"
By no means does one find the typical list of simple, answer-apparent questions throughout this Quiz book. Dr. Headrick's academic background shines forth as he has designed a companion book which appeals to all levels of Cat Who... aficionados ~~ from the `light' readers to the most serious. With many different modalities of questions, ranging from easy, general questions to ones requiring close attention during reading, this companion book is great fun for all readers.
How well do you really know `The Women in Quill's Life'? The idiosyncrasies of KoKo and Yum Yum? What one would see if meandering through Pickax and Moose County? Through Junktown? Most importantly, the history of Qwill's life and all the continuing characters who changed his life's path?
You may consider yourself well-versed in your readings of The Cat Who ... books, but be prepared for surprises. After taking one quiz in this Quiz Book, you'll find yourself reading the next with much more attention and care.
The Cat Who Quiz Book is not designed to be a scholarly study of Lilian Jackson Braun's infamous series, but through Dr. Headrick's book, one does pay closer attention during readings. It's an absolute must to have on hand after reading a Cat Who ... book, challenging yourself to better your score than on the last one read. Also so makes one wish Dr. Headrick was the prof in your classroom, stimulating one's brain in the most entertaining way!
The Cat Who Quiz Book is definitely challenging, thought provoking and such great fun. A perfect `game' book for get togethers with fellow Cat Who ... readers or for a great solitary escape time. Yes, you may have to reread a Cat Who ... book to complete a quiz, but that's the best part. On your next read, be on the lookout for those salient factors .... the mystery continues as you see how well you do!
Highly recommended!!!!
Book Description
Performance Consulting provides a conceptual framework and many how-to's for moving from the role of a traditional trainer to that of a performance consultant. Dozens of useful tools, illustrative exercises, and a case study that threads through the book show how the techniques described are applied in an organizational setting.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting book.......2005-09-20
Many of the concepts in this book are not new, but it was spun in a new way. This book would be particularly useful for anyone in an HR-related training consultant role.
Provide consulting and trainer for performance conceputual.......2002-08-27
In this book provideing both a conceptual framework and practical tecniques relevannt to the role of performance consulant. It's describe what to identfy performance requirement that are directly linked to the operational and business goals of an organization. This book suitable for Trainer and Consulting to read...
Insightful!.......2001-04-24
To meet increasingly demanding organizational goals, human resource departments must shift from traditional training methods (i.e. what employees learn) to performance consulting (i.e. what employees must do to achieve those goals). Authors Dana Gaines Robinson and James C. Robinson, who consult in this field, present this intriguing assertion in a rather abstract and wordy book. Thus, this is a better volume for serious study than for casual perusal.
The book gives you in-depth research and information on the complicated process of transforming your training operation to performance consulting. The book contains numerous graphs, guides and checklists, as well as a helpful resource section listing Human Resources associations and workshops. We [...] recommend this book to those involved in human resources, particularly training specialists, training coordinators, instructional systems designers, consultants, and career and organizational developers, as well as managers and media specialists.
Focus on Performance.......2000-11-28
You know you and your people need professional training to keep your business perspective valid and current. But what training?...where?...at what price? and at what lost productivity cost?
The Robinson's book delivers the essence of what creates performance improvement training and development in four sections: One, getting someone to take responsibility for performance training; Two, having a performance relationship map to help you design and complete performance assessments and illustrates the interrelationship between training, performance, work environment, and business needs; Three, discusses implementation; and Four, shows how performance improvement departments differ from training departments and answers questions about how you can get from where you are to where you need to be.
This book is not for beginners in the industry........1999-06-05
Going from a traditional trainer to performance consultant/trainer. I found the book to be a little overwhelming. I feel the terminology, language used could have been a little more user friendly, especially if you were just learning what a performance consultant is or does. The authors did a good job with the performance relationship map to use as an effective tool and the overall point of the book was well taken. After I attended a performance consultant workshop did I really have a better understanding of the points that the authors were trying to make.

The definitive biography of the century's godfather of invention-from the preeminent Edison scholar
"Israel's meticulous research and refusal to shy away from the dodgier aspects of Edison's personality offers a fresh glimpse into the life of the inventor."-New Scientist
"Remarkable."-Nature
"An authoritative look into Edison's working methods, here leavened by enough personal detail to give the achievements shape."-Publishers Weekly
"Highly recommended."
"Israel's book should go a long way toward taking Edison out of the shadows and placing him in the proper light."-Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Exhaustively researched, with strong emphasis on Edison's methods and achievements."-Kirkus Reviews
The conventional story of Thomas Edison reads more like myth than history: With only three months of formal education, a hardworking young man overcomes the odds and becomes one of the greatest inventors in history. But the portrait that emerges from Edison: A Life of Invention reveals a man of genius and astonishing foresight whose career was actually a product of his fast-changing era. In this peerless biography, Paul Israel exposes for the first time the man behind the inventions, expertly situating his subject within a thoroughly realized portrait of a burgeoning country on the brink of massive change. Informed by Israel's unprecedented access to workshop diaries, notebooks, letters, and more than five million pages of archives, this definitive biography brings fresh insights to a singularly influential and triumphant career in science.
Customer Reviews:
Great detailed biography.......2007-05-07
I liked this book a great deal. You should consider that this is not a fictional story, and is the very essence of a research work.
Great insights about his life, religious views, and his business of invention. Well treated subject and a great read.
Edison - a research project.......2007-03-15
This book is very authoritive and well researched, and even more important is that it provides end notes for the reader to verify the author's assertions. If you want a quick overview of Edison's life or just the highlights, this is not the book for you; but if you need to know the man, this is the best book I've read. Paul Israel presents Edison's achievments and failures, in inventions, human relationships and finances in a dispassionate manner.
The Wizard of Menlo Park.......2006-07-10
I've always been interested in reading the biographies of famous inventors. Edison was one I knew little about, so I purchased this book. It is very interesting and takes you through his entire life. You see how Edison begins as a skilled telegraph operator. But he is not content with the status quo, he is always improving what he is working with. But he is also a businessman and gets his ideas patented, and forms partnerships and businesses to profit from them.
The book also includes many pictures form different periods in his life. If you are interested in Edison, this is a great book.
Gird yourself for a long, slow march.......2005-06-07
Reading this book has been an experience for me. I wanted to find out more about the life of one of America's most famous inventors, and this book has helped me along the way, so I give it credit for that. However, I have felt like I am trudging into a mighty windstorm, reaching deep into my soul to plunge each forward step as I slowly turn the pages in this book. There are pockets of enlightenment throughout the book, but it really is a relaying of facts about Edison's life, which is technically what a biography should do, but this book does not come alive in my hands like others have.
To be fair, I did accomplish my goal of learning more about this great man. I learned that a lot his inventions were a result of not just great intellect, but of great work ethic and stick-to-it-iveness. Also, one of his greatest contributions was a corporate model for delegating work among his subordinates. The speed of the development of his inventions was the key, as several other inventors were working on similar ideas at the same time.
Anyway, I recommend the book as a good introduction to the life of Tom, but I am sure that there is a book out there that will give you the same enlightenment without making you feel as though you've crawled on your hands and knees through the Sahara, with a canteen full of lukewarm water that leaks at a very slow rate.
superb scholarly and technical treatment.......2004-01-07
I was given this book for a writing project and dutifully plowed through it over the Christmas holidays. Overall, I must say that it was an absolutely excellent holiday book as well as chock full of useful ideas for my scholarly purposes. This is an extremely difficult balance to strike and Israel has done it better than I thought possible - I was prepared for a long dry slog and instead found a great and exciting story.
Edison, Israel argues, was not just a lone little-educated tinkerer of genius as he is often portrayed, but the creator of the prototype for the modern corporate research lab - he knew how to find talent, how to organize it to get the most out of people, and how to beat the competition by both speed and in the creation of entire new systems of technology. He also knew how to manipulate the media and build on his fame, creating a myth to which he had to live up. That being said, he had a pitch-perfect intuitive sense not only of potential new markets, but of how to create technical solutions to exploit them. He learned from his failures and strove to apply his less-successful inventions elsewhere, often to great effect. Taken together, this was true business genius and Israel explains it all succinctly, including the exposure of Edison's many weaknesses in management and his financial affairs and his many flops (such as the mining experiments that nearly bankrupted him). Furthermore, the basics of his major inventions - improvements to the telegraph and telephone, the light bulb, commerical electricity generation systems, to mention a few - are covered with competence, always with an eye to the management of it all and what it took, all of which are of great use. This adds up to a masterpiece of scholarship and popular writing in my view, crossing a plethora of disciplines in very readable prose and at a good pace of storytelling.
However, there are many things that make this a challenging read and in some ways disappointing. Even though I know a lot about science and engineering from my own writing, I found the many passages explaining the nuts and bolts of his inventions hard to follow and ultimately rather dry. If the reader is not interested in these highly technical details, he can skim them without losing the narrative thread. Moreover, Edison as a person does not always come thru, though really he was his work and not much else. You also do not learn much about the fate of his enterprises or even his personal financial fortune after his death, which is also a part of his legacy that should be explored. Finally, Israel addresses somewhat rarified questions in the concluding chapter regarding whether Edison was a "scientist" and how industrial research was changing (developing specialties that required far more education than inventors of Edison's "heroic invention" epoch) to make the emergence of generalist, self-taught inventors like him far more difficult and with limited horizons; while I enjoyed this a great deal, it is of limited interest to those who were never steeped in "science policy."
All in all, highest recommendation. It is a great achievement and will stand as one of the definitive biographies of this great and difficult man.
Customer Reviews:
Early History of Thomas Edison and his inventions.......2006-01-25
This is a fascinating history of Thomas A. Edison focused on his inventions. Aimed at the moderately to well-educated reader of the time, the book gives a brief history of the inventor and then details all of his early inventions: the quadruplex, phonograph, toddygraph, electric pen, telephone, megaphone, tasimeter, harmonic engine and the electric light. Of interest is the fact that the book was published in May of 1879 several months prior to the complete electric light breakthrough of 1880-1882. Therefore, it is not surprising that the author considers his earlier inventions much more thoroughly than electric light. There is a first-person quote from a visitor to the Edison laboratory describing what electric light looks like (remember that most of the readers of the book would not yet have been exposed to the concepts). The book contains wonderful detailed lithographs of the inventions and some circuit drawings.
Bottom Line: Great piece of early Edison history reminding us that Edison was a great inventor long before the light bulb.

American youths to-day are given, if of a mechanical turn of mind, to amateur telegraphy or telephony, but seldom, if ever, have to make any part of the system constructed. In Edison's boyish days it was quite different, and telegraphic supplies were hard to obtain. But he and his "chum" had a line between their homes, built of common stove-pipe wire. The insulators were bottles set on nails driven into trees and short poles.

Bad work.......2005-04-22
It is quite a shame, that this facsimile is so badly made. The pictures are really bad reproduced and why is it, that page 117 is not there. Instead page 113 is shown one more time. And in several places the text is distorted from the scanning.
shameless or blind.......2003-07-17
Glorifying and corny. Unconditional praise of Edison achievements. Though the authors are clearly well-read, too many facts are ignored in the account of the circumnstances that lead Edison to the accumulation of patents. Lacks any critic view and end up creating an image of an "american hero" that is as ridiculous as untruth. I quote, just as an example, "In fact, if it were not for Edison's peculiar mentality, that refuses to recognize anything as impossible until indubitably demonstrated to be so, the production of motion pictures would certainly have been delayed for years, if not for all time."
Anyone seriously interested on the subject of the birht of cinema would recognize this as total nonsense or shameless manipulation of facts.
A book to avoid by anyone interested in having a truthfull and independent view on history.
Edison - Creator of Industry.......2003-02-01
The invention of the first light bulb inaugurated a new age for man: Electricity. Just as Edison had to create the tools to make the first bulb, he had to create the industry to use it. He did, and in doing so he assembled the first research laboratory and gathered around him a collection of great minds -- a rich assortment of men with varying talents.

Book Description
Originally published over 100 years ago, A Century of Dishonor is Helen Jackson's eye- opening sketch of the U.S. government's often shameful mishandling of what was called the "Indian problem". Using official documents as authentic research materials, Jackson asserts that the government and citizens of the United States were the cause of the "problems", and not the Native peoples. Broken treaties, inhuman treatment, restricted to reservations unfit for habitation or traditional lifestyle...all of these actions were taken against Indian tribes by a government that treated them with less consideration and compassion than that of a foreign country.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic.......2005-04-14
Like books written by Dickens and Hemmingway, this book is a classic. Written over a century ago, it describes actions and policies of the US and its people towards native Americans that are horrific, cruel and downright unamerican.
Yet he who is ignorant of history is condemned to repeat it. In this case, even though the history was well documented in this book, we continued to repeat it through continued mistreatment.
Helen Jackson's book is evidence that Americans knew what they were doing, knew that what they were doing was cruel and wrong and that they did it anyway.
Brave Pioneer for Native American Rights.......2002-03-31
Bearing in mind that this book was written at the time when Native Americans were still "Savages" and totally responsible for all atrocities perpetrated in the west,in the eyes of the White Europeans, Helen Hunt Jackson made a brave stand in trying to educate these same people to the needs and requirements of the Native Americans.
With each chapter given to a different Native American nation she tries, and in my opinion succedes,to make people understand the hopelessness the Native Americans found themselves in, and the only recourse they had was to fight to preserve their way of life, all too sadly with devestating consequences.
Through each chapter the same theme occurs, the whites cheat, steal, murder, and abuse the Native American and very few Whites tried to correct these wrong doings, and the biggest offender the US Government, and even today the US Government do not appear to be too interested in the Native Americans.
The book is "heavy going", and one can be forgiven in thinking, as they read through it, that I've been here before, because the facts are presented in the same way for every nation, but that notwithstanding, I feel this is a book that should be in anyones library who professes to have an interest in Native Americans.
Yes Helen Hunt Jackson was a brave pioneer to voice her opinions in favour of the redman all those years ago, had more people listend, perhaps the Native American culture in all its glory would still be with us today.
4 1/2 stars, but a classic of permanent value.......2001-11-19
This (unfortunately) timeless work is a scathing indictment of US Indian policy from independence until the 1880s. It includes a general treatment of bad-faith attitudes and policies, and a series of more detailed case studies of exceptionally egregious violations of legal treaties & human rights. It is timeless because of ongoing popular and official ignorance or lack of concern for American Indian rights, economic problems and indigenous culture---witness, for just one chilling example, the continuing imprisonment of Oglala/Anishinaabe activist Leonard Peltier, for murders he did not commit.
Jackson was a pioneer activist for Indian rights, and commitment shines through on nearly every page. While it is true that her writing style may seem dated to some contemporary undergraduates, her subject's intrinsic interest holds the attention of any reader with more than a marginal interest in the topic. It is still useful for research purposes, though it is perhaps most valuable for history and/or anthropology courses on changing attitudes & policy toward Indians.
In teaching about American Indian history, a main reservation about assigning it is the need to present what Indians themselves have said and/or written about their encounters with Euro-Americans. For a fine variety of views on these issues, see P. Nabokov ed, "Native American Testimony," and (among many other sources) memorable works by two premier Indigenous scholar-activists: Ward Churchill, "From A Native Son," and Vine Deloria Jr., "Custer Died For Your Sins."
Century of Dishonor: Good Message; Poor Delivery.......1999-09-13
To tell the truth, Century of Dishonor put me to sleep. I was forced to read it for a AP US History class. If you can stay awake to read it, it details everything you need to know about how the U.S. government has swindled and cheated Native Americans in this country. It was written in the late 1800's and we just don't talk like that anymore as a country. Like my teacher said: "The reason this book was so powerful was because it listed every incident with many tribes to bring home this point: There needs to be a change how they handled the Native Americans." No one in the class read the book cover to cover, including myself. I would never recommend reading this book, except for research (there's a 150 page or so Appendix along w/ the actual book)or if you're REALLY into that stuff. Even in the latter case, theres lots of better choices.

Living in the Runaway Mountain Time Zone........2001-07-29
Yes, "Living in the Runaway Mountain Time Zone" would be a much better suited title for this book. Apparently the editors of HCN were playing hooky when U.S. geography was being taught in their rural schools. The last time I checked "those wine drinking, cheese-eating" Californians watched the sun sink into the Pacific Ocean long after the rest of the country. But as a large part of the West, both geographically and politically, California is a no-show in the "Runaway West."
Otherwise, if you can fight through the tired sterotypes that are littered throughout most of the writings, then you might be rewarded.
Great collection of short essays on the West.......2000-12-04
High Country News is a biweekly newspaper about live and issues of the Western United States. The short pieces in "Living in the Runaway West" are from its syndicated column "Writers on the Range." The book is a great collection of those essays, most of which are between two and three pages long -- the perfect length for browsing and getting your "West fix." The essays cover plenty of topics, from environmental controversies like dams and mines to the social repercussions of picking out-of-the-way small towns in which to live. I'd recommend this collection to anyone interested in the West, contemporary environmental issues, and the outdoors in general.
