Book Description
This splendid album of rare and unpublished photographs from the Romanovs' own albums is an intimate portrait of the private and public lives of the family of Nicholas II, Russia's last tsar. This unique collection is taken from the personal album of the Tsar's daughter, Grand Duchess Maria, and from the Tsarina Alexandra's own commemorative album, both now in the James Blair Lovell Archive. An extraordinary chronicle of a way of life that ended in 1918 with the brutal execution of nearly every member of the Imperial Family pictured here.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2004-03-18
In "Royal Russia", Lovell draws the reader into the amazing world of the last Imperial Family with their wonderful photographs. The photographs are excellent, however there are some misidentifictations of the Grand Duchesses. Nonetheless, the book is great.
"Good book about the most mysterious royal family".......2003-10-27
Brief Summary:
In the year 1881 church bells rung from the towers Alexander II is dead. His eldest son Nicholas was crowned czar of imperial Russia. With his wife Alexandra from England. Granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Their first child was born in 1895.Her name was The Grand Duchess Olga Romanov. She was the czars heir. Then in 1897 their second child was born. Her name was Tatiana Romanov. Then in 1899 Marie was born. Then in1901 Anastasia was born. Followed by their final child the new heir Alexei in 1904. Then problems came to Russia there were riots in Russia. The people started to hate the czar and czarina. People were starving in the streets. And Nicholas didn't know anything about it. Alexei was diagnosed with Hemophilia that meant if he bleeds he could bleed himself to death. The Russian Revolution started and the people hated the czar. They imprisoned him and his family. To a small village in Siberia. Then they transported them to a village near Moscow. Where one morning a soldier came to there room and told them to get dressed and get downstairs. The family was told to wait in the basement. A firing squad opened the door and started to fire on the family. The bullets cut their bodies down. There were screaming and lots of smoke. Not one Romanov lived that morning. They say that Anastasia escaped and lived. But that is another mystery.
Critical Thinking:
In the book Royal Russia the Romanov family had many fears. They were imprisoned to Siberia and they went from extremely rich to poor. The girls were the most scared because they did not know what was going on or what was going to happen to them. When they were shot in the basement they probably had a clue what was going on. When they were shot they were terrified on what happened to there family.
Bottom Line:
Good book to read and also has some good pictures to look at that best describes the Romanov family as they were not how they were preseved to be.
Not really worth buying.......2002-02-22
Hmmmm, I was decidedly disappointed in this book. Many of the pictures contained within were very poor quality and there were some blatant mistakes in identification of the family members. A good many of the photographs are not new to the collector of Romanov books. I would not recommend this book if one is expecting to see anything new. I dont think Mr. Blair Lovell would have been pleased!
More than you need!.......2001-07-21
I enjoy reading about Imperial Russia very much, and this is one of the books I have enjoyed the most! It gives you a very good look into these people's lives, which makes this an excellent book for studying!! Five stars for this book!
Loved it!.......2001-06-22
I thought it was a very good book with lots of nice photographs, but as said before, the names of the Grand Duchesses was changed and mixed a little and the author continually repeated himself. The years of the photographs and the ages of the Grand Duchesses in conjunction with this was also a little mixed at places. Other than that, it is a wonderful book and I love it!

Book Description
A Master's gift to the world is his life. By seeing his life or at least by seeing the portrait of his life as painted in the stories of those who knew him, a Master's life becomes a sketch of a path to Mastery.
From stories shared by his son, this book paints a portrait of the famous Wing Chun Grand Master, Ip Man, providing a set of fifteen principles as a guide to mastery. While there are broad lessons to be learned from this portrait, the details must be savored. Many of the great figures of history are shrouded in the mists of aggrandizement, but here the details, the fine strokes of the portrait, have remained to show the humble seeker something about the life of a Master.
Each chapter provides a principle or set of principles to contemplate. You will be richly rewarded if you seek to discern the principles and the man who strove to embody them.
These stories and the principles drawn from them are commended to you for your benefit and learning and enjoyment. Let them guide you in your journey, but do not look for them to tell you every step. In this portrait are great treasures for the takingbut not simply for the asking.

First book I bought off Amazon.......2003-03-09
This is the first book I purchased off Amazon and read it in a day. While a thin book, it is an interesting read. The book talks about the life of the late, Great Grandmaster [Y]Ip Man, how he came to learn Ving Tsun Kung Fu, how he lived and what he was. While you could easily find a life story of him easily by a net search, this book shows more a philisophical response to his life and decisions he made, something that is not in other stories I've read on him.

I enjoyed reading the book and learning more about Ip Man. I am a disciple of Wing Chun under Sifu Sam Chan (but not his best student) and found this book very informative giving a look into the life of the man who is considered by many the Father of Wing Chun. I strongly recommend this book if you enjoy the history behind Wing Chun as I do.
Rare Insight.......2001-08-07
As the only teacher of Kung Fu superstar Bruce Lee, Wing Chun Kung Fu Grandmaster Ip Man made a very significant contribution to the Martial Arts world. This is the first book written about his life. The book gives rare insight into the life, and teaching of this amazing man. Ip Man - Portrait of a Kung Fu Master is authored by Ip Man's own son, Wing Chun Grandmaster Ip Ching, and one of his top disciples, Master Ron Heimberger. These two men represent the greatest living source of Ip Man's teachings. This book is a guide for those who wish to follow in the footsteps of one of Kung Fu's greatest Masters.
Great subject poorly executed.......2001-08-02
If you are looking for a collection of pictures of the all time wing chun master, the book is fine. But if you are looking for wing chun content, in terms of theories, old fashion training (the way wing chun was traditionally taught, before the bad influence of the american way of life.....not being patient for the necessary time, etc); To clarifying the big public about, who were in fact the students who had a very near relation to the grandmaster. Then you will be very dissapointed with this book. It does not add anything to what was written before.

Book Description
Highly admired by both women and men, Susan Sarandon is anything but the typical Hollywood actress. In addition to her stellar film career, she has a list of passions--and a good many of them are political and social.
This is the first and only biography of Sarandon that highlights the real peson behind the screen image, exploring her idealism, values, and combative spirit in the service of higher goals, while also celebrating her stunning career as an actress.
Sarandon's creative and political passions have often meshed. So motivated is Sarandon by her convictions that she often chooses movie roles to reflect larger issues. Her opposition to the death penalty culminated in her Academy Award-winning performance in "Dead Man Walking."
From Nicaragua to nuclear waste; from voter registration to the Equal Rights Amendment; from ACT UP to Meals on Wheels and flood relief--Susan Sarandon is there. She has proved time and again that she is always ready to speak out and act up whenever she believes it will do some good.
Renowned celebrity biographer Marc Shapiro traces Sarandon's life from her Catholic upbringing in suburbia and her early days of protest for civil rights and against the Vietnam War to her more recent involvement with women's and children's rights in Nicaragua, and the unforgettable disruption of the Academy Awards ceremony to protest the internment of Haitians with HIV, among many other projects. Shapiro also discusses her career successes through her high-profile, groundbreaking roles in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Pretty Baby," "Atlantic City," "Thelma & Louise," and "Dead Man Walking," as well as her unconventional relationships with directors Louis Malle and Franco Amurri, and actor/director Tim Robbins.
No ordinary biography, SUSAN SARANDON is a captivating page-turner about a sexy, alluring, and passionately committed actress who has broken every conventional rule and survived to become one of Hollywood's outstanding stars.
Customer Reviews:
Pulitzer-quality writing.......2006-03-16
The fact that this title wasn't considered for the Pulitzer the year is came out is a sham. Susan Sarandon is hot, white hot. Trying to chronicle and describe her dynamic life is like trying to explain a unicorn to a blind man. You can try, but you'll both end up confused. Shapiro has this woman down! Those of you looking for nudity will be disappointed. I've read it 5x and each time I pick up on some of the allegory and subtleties that Shapiro mixes into the biography. Very skillful!
Susan Rulezzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!1.......2002-05-29
This Biography of Susan Sarandon Is the most wonderful book I've ever read.
Marc Shapiro has done a great job writing this book. It's shows all the sides of susan. You don't even have to be a Susan fan to like this book. Most people only know she's a great actress but she's so much more. She's a wonderful activist, a mother and a beautiful woman.
It's really cool to read. Shapiro derscribes her whole life from her childhood till this moment.
This book shows the life story of a never comparable beautiful woman.

great idea, but slightly mis-focused presentation.......2004-07-06
The author's key point is that positional sacrifices differ from combinations by the degree of uncertainty inherent in them.
Including chapter 1, The Psychology of Sacrifices; chapter 2, Theoretical and Standard Sacrifices; and the final 20 element quiz, this book has all of nine chapters. The middle 6 chapters make up the meat of the book and include
chapter 3, Sacrifices to create a passed pawn
chapter 4, Sacrifices to destroy the opponent's center
chapter 5, Sacrifices to open lines
chapter 6, The Indian bishop
chapter 7, The "Karpovian" exchange sacrifice
chapter 8, Queen for Rook and Bishop sacrifices
This book covers pawn, exchange, piece, even queen sacrifices in different circumstances and to different ends. Some of the examples are truly amazing, well beyond anything that I could ever conceive. A good grasp of positional considerations is needed to appreciate some of these, even though the positional elements and why they are important are generally very well explained. Any tactical variations are given at length, and this defintely helps the reader come to terms with the examples.
Where I think the author misfires, is in pursuing each example game to the very end. This leads to some very complicated alternatives being explored, many of them well past the point of the sacrifice. If you need closure on whether or not the sacrifice proved successful, this may be good. But it limits the number of examples given.
I think the content of this book could help most players below expert rating appreciate some ideas for the first time. Seeing a winning passed pawn motif conjured out a position that contained not even a wisp of such a possibility is truly enlightening. Also includes fine examples (and explanation!) of the compensation arising from certain pawn and piece sacrifices.
Of course, you can always ignore the indepth variations until you are in the mood and simple read the text and get a lot out of this book.
Handy size, well-written, few if any typos. Three and a half stars, rounded down to three.

Aye-Aye, Sir!! -- Lessons for Us All from "Canoe U.".......2006-10-07
This book can help you in your personal or professional lives by distilling some key lessons of leadership as honed at the US Naval Academy. Leaders are made, not born, and no you can't become a leader by reading a book or a thousand books. But by thoughtfully reading this book and applying its lessons, you WILL improve your leadership skills. The Navy has 4 short years to turn recent high school graduates into combat leaders. Their formula has, by and large, worked for them. Put it to work for you....
Teaching Leadership in a Time Practiced Way.......2004-10-27
The military academies were among the first to understand that leadership is a subject that can be learned just the way you learn a language, mathematics or computer programming. It is a mixture of theory and practice. You teach the theory, and you assign 'homework' that enables these theories to be put into practice.
In the military acadamies you are teaching one of the hardest leadership tasks, how to make people perform in the crucible of combat. Here leadership is more important than in most companies. It is a field that the academies study very closely. The graduates of the program are those who lead the Navy in time of peace and peril.
This book concentrates on the Navy way of teaching leadership. It is not necessarily the way that is suited for every environment, but after all, it is only one book. And after all, some people will do better than others -- we are after all, just people. This book describes the way that the Navy has trained its officers for a long time, it works for them, and as a business manager there are certainly techniques that are applicable to business practices.
A Must Read For Today's Leaders.......2004-09-16
Excellent book. As a career Naval Officer, I have seen first hand how critical each of the leadership principles discussed in this book are. Throughout fleet, these are the skills, and values which distinguish the highly successful leaders from the mediocre. In a straightforward manner, the authors elucidate the 12 fundamental lessons which have been carefully honed over the course of the Naval Academy's long and impressive history of turning out admirable military, government and business leaders. When earnestly applied, these tenets will prove to be of significant value to leaders and organizations, whether military or civilian. In this highly enlightening book, Johnson and Harper blend sound psychological and sociological knowledge with gripping real life examples. In addition to being informative and thought provoking, the book is a fun read. I strongly recommend it.

Book Description
What happens if, after being given up for adoption in childhood, you reestablish contact with your biological family -- only to discover that your newfound brother is a killer?
Anne Bird, the sister of Scott Peterson, knows firsthand.
Soon after her birth in 1965, Anne was given up for adoption by her mother, Jackie Latham. Welcomed into the well-adjusted Grady family, she lived a happy life. Then, in the late 1990s, she came back into contact with her mother, now Jackie Peterson, and her family -- including Jackie's son Scott Peterson and his wife, Laci. Anne was welcomed into the family, and over the next several years she grew close to Scott and especially Laci. Together they shared holidays, family reunions, and even a trip to Disneyland. Anne and Laci became pregnant at roughly the same time, and the two became confidantes.
Then, on Christmas Eve 2002, Laci Peterson went missing -- and the happy façade of the Peterson family slowly began to crumble. Anne rushed to the family's aid, helping in the search for Laci, even allowing Scott to stay in her home while police tried to find his wife. Yet Scott's behavior grew increasingly bizarre during the search, and Anne grew suspicious that her brother knew more than he was telling. Finally she began keeping a list of his disturbing behavior. And by the time Laci's body -- and that of her unborn son, Conner -- were found, Anne was becoming convinced: Her brother Scott Peterson had murdered his wife and unborn child in cold blood.
Filled with news-making revelations and intimate glimpses of Scott and Laci, the Peterson family, and the investigation that followed the murder, Blood Brother is a provocative account of how long-dormant family ties dragged one woman into one of the most notorious crimes of our time.

EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-10-05
This book really explained everything from the author's growing up to the sentencing in prison for the rest of his lfe. I couldn't put it down since it was an exciting story and I wanted to know what happened - every step. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Did He Do It? - Review of Blood Brother.......2007-09-17
By the authors own admission she hardly knew her half-brother Scott Peterson since she had been given up for adoption as a baby. However, Scott did live with Ann (the author) during much of the time the entire country was searching for a very pregnant Lacy Peterson. I felt the authors pain at being overjoyed to have connected with her roots while at the same time struggling with her gut instinct knowing she will lose her family again. Ann Baird shows us inside the world of Scott Peterson as only a family member could see. I highly recommend the book to any true crime reader.
Summary of the book: He Acted Strange...that's all folks!.......2007-08-22
So she's related to him, big deal. I read the book like most people to get an insight to what happened and get a few more details. I find it sad that she was so quick to make a buck based on her "hunches". She's a mother of 2 young kids, why is most of the book about her drinking too much with Scott at her home? At one point she says she drives a few hours to spend time with her adoptive parents, only to leave her 2 kids there for the weekend so her and Scott can go drinking. What is the point of this?
So he acted bizarre (we could see that just watching him on TV). It's one thing to feel caught up in it, but I think you should have a little dignity and respect for yourself and not run around with many heresay stories. That's all this book is. I'm sure Jackie (her birth mom) is sorry she ever found her long lost daughter. Maybe this book is PAYBACK for Scott being a child that was chosen, not put up for adoption like herself.
To see her on Oprah and Good Morning America and Dateline, etc etc etc. just to discuss what she thought about him...give me a break. You didn't write this book to deal with it yourself - that's what journals are for - it's all about the $$. And to call Laci a close friend when she only saw her 4 times tops...How bad do you need to stick yourself in this story? Scott is paying for this crime already. But thanks for the extra kicks when I'm down, Sis.
Cashing in on an obsure Mommy Dearest.......2007-05-11
When a case like the Laci Peterson murder makes national news, people come out of the woodwork claiming their earth shattering revelations and connections. Anne Bird was one of those people who wrote her book for the purpose of excersising her demons and connection to the Peterson family.
Anne Bird was one of two children that Scott's mother, Jackie Peterson, gave up for adoption. While Anne enjoyed a happy childhood with her adopted family, like many adopted children I have met in my lifetime, she always wondered what if about her birth family. She eventually reunites with Jackie in 1997 and builds a relationship with her.
Anne reveals a few details we otherwise hear about in other accounts, including the tales told by Sharon Roche. What Sharon only hinted at, Anne was able to offer more insight into. Jackie was a smothering, egocentric Mommy Dearest who loved and adored Scott as her golden child. I've met women like her before. A former friend of my Mom's always compaired her two children to me and my sister, and saw us as the model of success. Her two children could do no wrong, were never disciplined, and were taught that it's ok to lie, cheat and steel because as long as they came out looking good and getting the things they wanted it was alright. They grew up to be foul mouthed, violent, and criminal. Over the years her jealous antics got to be too much, but somehow Mom valued their friendship and hung on. She refused to believe what was in front of her eyes until the very end. When the end came, Mom was sadder than I have ever seen her, but the truth came out. Just like it did for Scott.
Scott is a lying, cheating, meniacal brute who cared for little except boozing it up and having fun. He had a variety of discipline problems (being expelled from schools, fired from jobs for stealing, etc.) He clearly did not want a child, as it would have taken the focus off of himself. Somehow he decided that rather than leaving the marriage he should murder Laci and their unborn child; and, after they were out of the picture he could go on and reinvent himself.
Why not 5 stars? Anne had an obtuse connection to the Peterson family, if that. She admits that she did not have much contact with Laci, and they would only meet in the flesh four times. Laci seems like a nice enough gal, but how much could you know by only meeting someone four times? It's also hard for me to believe (even though Anne was not a reliable source in this department, but, I never cease to be amazed by the antics of people) that Laci and Scott did not have discussions about children before they married. Anne wouldn't know anything about this being in role in the family. Plus, she wrote her book as therapy for her being an adopted child who had a connection to the Peterson family. Enjoy it for some insights into Scott and his family, apples don't fall far from the tree.

Book Description
Jimmy Sheddan was one of the many New Zealanders who joined the RNZAF then left his native land to come to England to fight the enemies of Great Britain during World War II. Despite their size of population, New Zealanders rose to the challenge in great numbers, and the recollections of Jim Sheddan demonstrate some of the trials and wartime tribulations that they faced.
However Sheddan also discusses the fun these men had despite the dangers and sacrifices of war. Sheddan rose from the rank of Sergeant Pilot to Squadron Leader with 486 Squadron. He became an exponent of the Hawker Tempest, winning the DFC.
He survived 19 hours in a dinghy off the French coast, a crash landing in a Tempest following a battle with a V1 flying bomb, and the advance across northern Europe in the final weeks of the war. This is his story.

Seat of your pants flying.......2007-07-08
It's been a while since I read this book but it deserves some sort of a review and a rating. Books about flying the Hawker Tempest in WWII aren't exactly thick on the ground and the same applies to memoirs written by pilots from the Royal New Zealand Air Force. As time passes this is slowly changing as more stories are recorded but for the time being this book will be, and will probably remain, one of the best around.
The Tempest was right on the edge of how far piston engined aircraft could be developed. It was incredibly fast and could hold its own against the jets the Germans were beginning to field towards the end of the war.
The book, co-written with WWII aviation authority Norman Franks, follows the usual pattern of following Mr Sheddan's early childhood and family history, his education and eventual enlisting, training and postings to squadrons. The writing is easy to follow but quite descriptive and the operational side of things is well described but you don't have to be well-versed in WWII knowledge to make sense of what's going on. The end notes include an essay written by Mr Sheddan about using the Tempest in combat effectively which only serves to hammer home the impression that this man was the consummate professional and leader.
If you collect these type of books like me, have a passing interest in the aviation side of WWII or would like to read one of these books that shows a Kiwi viewpoint of the air war over Europe, give this book a go. You won't be disappointed.

esoteric, academic, and incomplete.......2003-11-10
This book is written primarily to an academic audience of professors and graduate students and seems based on a collection of articles written in academic journals. For those looking for a compendium of this research, this book offers a well written summarization. In particular, it does a good job of going through recent ideas of partisanship and what accounts for the changing state of party identification in the U.S. over the past fifty years. Beyond this, however, the book has some important weaknesses. In particular, its big claim to fame is in advancing a new theory of social identification to explain why people cling so tenanciously to their attachments to the Democrat or Republican party. This is fine, except they never really develop their theory in any detal (it is only explained in about 4 pages). So unless the reader is familiar with a lot of social pscyhology their explanation will not have much resonance. More importantly they provide no explicit tests of their theory. I found it ironic that authors who spend so much effort undermining the empirical weaknesses in other research, provide no direct empirical tests to validate their own claims.
Pathbreaking.......2003-03-16
What is incredible about this book is its succinct restatement of the body of work these authors have worked on over the past decade and what has come to characterize the state of the field in the macropartisanship in political science. It is an easy read and will definitely become a classic

Book Description
There may still be disagreement about the threat to human survival posed by society's environmental impacts, but no one can doubt that individual eco-systems and the global biosphere are both increasingly shaped by human production and consumption. This book shows that Marx's treatment of natural conditions possesses an inner logic, coherence, and analytical power which has not been previously recognized. The power of Marx's approach stems from his consistent treatment of human production in terms of the mutual constitution of its social form and material content. While recognizing that production is structured by historically developed relations among producers, Marx also insists that production as a social and material process is shaped and constrained by natural conditions, including the natural condition of human bodily existence. Paul Burkett shows that it is Marx's overriding concern with human emancipation that impels him to approach nature from the standpoint of materialist history, sociology, and critical political economy.
