    Book Description

The mysterious circumstances surrounding Jim Thompson's disappearance in Malaysia sparked off what was to become a seven-year investigation. The subsequent media attention generated by the search triggered a number of theories, some proving to have rather sinister connotations.

In this intriguing book, the author seeks to evaluate most, if not all, of the speculative, and partially substantiated opinions which have been formed over the years.

Communist conspiracy, suicide or simple misadventure? Only after reading this amazing story are we in a position to decide.

5 out of 5 stars this book is so AWESOME!.......2000-03-21

i would really like to know why you people gave this book only 2 and a half stars. really? well u know what this is such a good book. it talks about rosie's entire life and gives a great biography of her career and life story. everyone who enjoys rosie as much as i do should read it. its soooooo good!

2 out of 5 stars Not the best book for a true Rosie fan.......1999-07-24

This book is just a rumor filled book of junk. The chapter on her sexuality was distastefull as well as mean. We all love Rosie no matter what. She is an attractive women that diserves some respect. This was a poorly written book, with no taste. That only thing I enjoyed was the pics. There is no proof to any of the information, and I hope everyone realizes this.

1 out of 5 stars If you have to read it go to a library........1998-06-11

This book was a waste of time and pure drival. The authers did not capture thhne essesence of Rosie or why so many people adore her. It read like a rushed compilation of tabloid trash. As well it's references to Rosies sexuality was offensive and steriotypes. If she is or is not gay her fans don't care, we watch her every day for her class, humor, and the way she remains being a star stuck little girl from Long Island waiting at the stage door for an autograph. We all know she's a talented celeb. but she constanly forgets. If you want to learn more about Rosie watch her show, in one episode she reveles more about her self than this book does. Kilroy

5 out of 5 stars LOTS OF INSIDE INFO FOR FANS.......1997-11-29

I thoroughly enjoyed this sensitive portrait of my favorite star. And unlike another reader, I thought the chapter on her sexuality was deftly handled. I also liked the way the authors addressed other personal issues, like her family and her struggle with her weight. I felt like the authors were NOT out to do some quick hatchet job on her. They really got the tone of her TV show. Highly recommended by a HUGE ROSIE FAN.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A PIECE OF TRASH.......1997-08-10

THIS is by far the worst book ever written on a person. If any of you are interested on the chapter on Rosie being gay don't buy the book Here are there reasons George says :

      Owns two motor cycles

      Only wears make-up onstage

      Doesn't shave her legs.

      Or chin

Doesn't wear dresses or much jewelery

      Still a self-confessed jock

      Not afraid of power tools.

And lots more stupid reasons. I hated this book in fact don't buy it just look on the internet for all the information you need. Because acording to his bibliography that's where he got most of the information

          Book Description

Church and Worship Music: A Research and Information Guide is an annotated bibliography to books, recordings, videos, and websites in the field of church music. Church music is a rich field of study, both in traditional musicology courses and music-education programs aimed at training choral directors for religious and secular positions. Over the past decades, there has been a growth of literature covering everything from traditional subject matter such as the organ works of J.S. Bach to newer areas of inquiry including folk hymnology, women and African-American composers, music as a spiritual healer, to the music of Mormon, Shaker, Moravian, and other smaller sects. Multiply indexed, this book will serve as an excellent tool for librarians, researchers, and scholars in sorting through the massive amount of new material that has appeared in the field over the last decades.

            Book Description

Revised to include new selections and updated bibliographical material, the second edition of this popular sourcebook offers a rich, revealing look at everyday Roman life. It provides clear, lively translations of a fascinating array of documents drawn from Latin and Greek source material--from personal letters, farming manuals, medical texts, and recipes to poetry, graffiti, and tombstone inscriptions. Each selection has been translated into readable, contemporary English. This edition includes more than 50 additional selections that introduce new topics and expand coverage of existing topics. In addition, the commentary on all the selections has been revised to reflect the recent scholarship of social and cultural historians. Extensive annotations, abundant biographical notes, maps, appendices, cross-references to related topics, and a newly-updated bibliography provide readers with the historical and cultural background material necessary to appreciate the selections. Arranged thematically into chapters on family life, housing, education, entertainment, religion, and other important topics, the translations reveal the ambitions and aspirations not only of the upper class, but of the average Roman citizen as well. They tell of the success and failure of Rome's grandiose imperialist policies and also of the pleasures and hardships of everyday life. Wide-ranging and lively, the second edition of As the Romans Did offers the most lucid account available of Roman life in all its diversity. Ideal for courses in Ancient Roman History, Social History of Rome, Roman Civilization, and Classics, it will also appeal to readers interested in ancient history.

5 out of 5 stars Both educating and enjoyable.......2006-12-14

Excellent. You will actually have a good time reading this if it is required for a class. There are plenty of funny antecdotes throughout. Many of the examples of people interacting seem like they could be happening now. The great thing about this book is that more than half of the material is ancient sources. Letters about marriage, politics, superstition, it is all taught by example, which takes you into the history much more. Wonder what the people actually thought about gladitorial combats? What happened when someone had to go travelling? If there's two sides to the story, both sides are presented in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable source on life as a Roman.......2005-10-17

I must say this was an incredibly fun sourcebook to read. At times it had me laughing with humorous quotations such as; "I am amazed, o wall, that you have not collapsed and fallen, since you must bear the tedious stupidities of so many scrawlers" and at other times I would shudder; "Good God, what scrawny little slaves they were! Their skin was everywhere embroidered with purple welts from their many beatings. Their backs, scarred from floggings... their complexions were an ugly yellow..."

Using a slew of both primary and secondary sources, Jo-Ann Shelton takes us through the life of the Romans. Covering topics as varied as slavery, provincial administration, the family unit, the magistrates and occupations, we are brought directly into Roman life with all of its practices, norms, values and peculiarities. The key feature of this book is the focus on the common Roman and how they lived with a section devoted entirely to woman in Roman society, a much overlooked topic. From dinner parties to funeral clubs, all aspects of the common Romans life are discussed.

In all a very worthwhile book to own and use as both a source of reference and entertainment!

            5 out of 5 stars Vivid!.......2005-05-19

Although this book was recquired reading for a Roman History class I took, I found myself really enjoying the read. Shelton does a superb job in collecting sources to paint an engaging and colorful picture of Roman society. I've read a lot of books about Roman history(due to the sweetness of its action), but few make the Romans seem to come alive quite like this one. If you like Roman history like me, this would be an excellent choice for your collection.

5 out of 5 stars the best sourcebook.......2004-05-10

Simply the best sourcebook for teaching Roman History. While Ms. Shelton is obsessed with footnotes, she has organized a myriad of helpful documents in the best possible way. This book is a real treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Honestly, no others compare.......2004-01-15

I had to read this book for one of my University courses on Roman history (the first half), and while the other books I was forced to go through were dry and rather boring, unless your mind was concentrating hard, this book managed to bring Roman history and life ALIVE.

The footnotes given are an absolute gem - to me, they WERE the high point of the book. Shelton does a fantastic job of explaining what certain words, phrases, rituals or just ideas the Romans held in the past.

As stated previously, the book isn't "dry", by this I mean there isn't an action by action replay of things that don't really illustrate the true life they lived. Instead, there are bits and pieces of writings from various Romans about their life - such as a Roman writing a letter to a friend to tell him why no one attends his dinners anymore, (even with the lure of free food) because they can't stand to hear him recite his boring poetry before, during and after dinner! The humour in some of these pieces really made it all come alive.

            Excellent read.

My Mom used to read this to me when I was little, and coincidently, I picked it up from our library while writing my personal statement for graduate school. I also am looking for "invisible enemies" like Louis Pasteur's; I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology.

I had this series as a child and LOVED it. This particular book was my favorite in the series. I can still remember the storyline. My set had been handed down to my sister. Now that she has grown up, I'm not sure where they have landed, but I intend to get the entire set again.

Presents a good lesson featuring the best scientist in history for whom I have a deep respect, but gives me nightmares since I read it as a kid! I researched the real story and some facts are incorrect. If I liked it, yes & no for these reasons. Haunting,& it changed the course of my life.

                    Book Description

This classic story seeks to illuminate a little-known theater of the Civil War--the cavalry battles of the Trans-Mississippi West, a region that included Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, the Indian Territory, and part of Louisiana. Stephen B. Oates traces the successes and defeats of the cavalry; its brief reinvigoration under John S. "Rip" Ford, who fought and won the last battle of the war at Palmetto Ranch; and finally, the disintegration of this once-proud fighting force.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and useful niche work about CSA cavalry........2006-08-15

As the author warns in the preface this is a difficult work to classify (and therefore review) because it is unusual--but in a good way! It is devoted to an overview of CSA cavalry operations West of the Mississippi. The author states that this is an adaptation of his thesis work and is unnecessarily humble about the nature of the book.

The book is well written and largely in narrative form covers the development, actions, and demise of CSA cavalry in the Trans-Mississippi theater. It is an entertaining read because it fluidly covers the war from beginning to end from the Trans-Mississippi cavalryman's perspective. The great raids in Missouri are reviewed in narrative form with campaign maps. While the author is clearly intrigued by the subject, I don't sense much bias in the accounts. That says a lot because it is challenging to find works that are not heavily biased one way or another in this particular theater.

Sprinkled throughout are useful reference tables of the number of regiments and men raised in cavalry service, the cost of equipment, and the supply of horses. Following that is a list of units by state with their various field grade officers. So while I selected this work to get a better sense of perspective, I also found that it has become a useful reference for a portion of the war that is otherwise poorly represented in the historical record.

I recommend this work to anyone interested in better understanding the nature of warfare in the Trans-Mississippi, and particularly those interested in the cavalry action/raids in Missouri and Arkansas.

                                Book Description

For almost 30 years, the environmental justice movement (EJM) has challenged the environmental and health inequities that are often linked with social inequities, calling attention to the disproportionate burden of pollution borne by low-income and minority communities. The successes of the movement have been celebrated, and the EJM's impact on the direction of environmental policy, research, and activism is widely acknowledged. But the literature on environmental justice lacks a real assessment of the movement's effectiveness. This book provides just such a critical appraisal, examining the EJM's tactics, strategies, rhetoric, organizational structure, and resource base. With chapters by both scholars and activists, the book links theory and practice with the aim of contributing to a more effective movement.

Power, Justice, and the Environment looks first at the progress, failures, and successes of the EJM over the years. A comparison with the Civil Rights movement draws some provocative conclusions. The book next focuses on the development of new strategies and cultural perspectives, considering, among other topics, alternative models for community mobilization and alternative organizational structure. Finally, the book examines the effect of globalization on environmental inequality and how the EJM can address transnational environmental injustices.

                                        Book Description

The world's montane forests are vitally important for conservation and water catchment. Because logging regimes have significant impacts on biodiversity as well as water quality and water quantity, the management of these forests has often been a major source of conflict amongst rural communities, government agencies, and conservationists. Although much information on ecologically sustainable managment practices is now available, further organizational change and policy tranformation is needed to see a transition to sustainable practices inplemented on the ground.

Towards Forest Sustainability contains practical essays by some of the world's leading forests ecologists and managers from the United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand. The authors describe the changes that have taken place in forest management- highlighting what worked, what didn't, and the lessons that have been learned.

This unique collection of essays documents the drivers of the change in the logging industry and the resulting outcomes, both the good and the bad. The book provides real-world insights from an international perspective into government policy, industrial concerns, and conservation and biodiversity issues.

                                          Description:
International protocols, such as those of the Montreal Process (MP), specify desired outcomes without specifying the process and components required to attain those outcomes. We suggest that the process and its components are critical to achieve desired outcomes. We discuss recent progress in northwestern North America, on three topics that will facilitate development of and reporting in sustainability protocols: (1) common terms and comparable guidelines for soil disturbance, (2) cost-effective techniques for monitoring and assessing soil disturbance, and (3) improved methods to rate soils for risk of detrimental soil disturbance. Uniform terms for soil disturbance will facilitate reporting and exchange of information. Reliable monitoring techniques and tracking the consequences of soil disturbance for forest growth and hydrology are paramount for improving understanding and predictions of the practical consequences of forest practices. To track consequences, we urge creation of regional research and operations databases that can be used to: (1) address MP values, (2) define detrimental soil disturbances, (3) develop risk rating systems for operational application, and (4) improve best management practices (BMPs) and ameliorative treatments that avoid or correct detrimental disturbances.
