Like his no-nonsense tenure as one of the dominating linebackers in NFL history, Dick Butkus's no-nonsense autobiography covers plenty of ground, offers no excuses, scares the hell out of you (you will never look at your knees--or your doctors--in quite the same way again), and, in the end, entertains with his candor and verve. Butkus has axes to grind, and he grinds them wonderfully, but he also is capable of examining his own behavior. What emerges is a portrait of an athlete willing to explore--roots, warts, and all--the aggression and rage he rode to glory on the field, and the challenges he faced trying to harness those same emotions off the field.
Book Description
From 1965 to 1973 Dick Butkus was the most revered player in professional football. Although he never played for a championship team, and one can't say he set all kinds of records, no other defender in the entire history of the NFL has so electrified the game. The stories about Butkus are legendary. They make him sound so intense, so ferocious, and for the most part they are frighteningly true. Yet underneath the layers of mythology resides a man who is as thoughtful and emotional as he is intense.
In Butkus, Dick Butkus tells his entire life story, from growing up and getting into trouble in Chicago, to his uncomfortable yet glorious years at the University of Illinois. He reveals what it felt like to be the ninth child of two hardworking Lithuanian parents--one of whom was born in a Illinois coal mine, the other never fully learned to speak English--and the camaraderie and contentment he experienced while playing football. He recounts the historic nine seasons with the Chicago Bears where he played with and against such immortals as Gale Sayers, Jim Brown, Brian Piccolo, Mike Ditka, and Joe Greene.
Dick Butkus looks deeply into his own psyche to find the source of his passionate style of play--a style that has often been described as violence and intimidation on the football field. With honesty and emotion, he recounts his battles with George "Papa Bear" Halas, the NFL, and the media.
Customer Reviews:
Butkus is #1.......2005-11-10
My first word as a child was: Butkus. There was a football game on TV at the hospital where I was born. The Bears were playing the Lions. Butkus had five sacks and an interception. I like cookies and milk.
Butkus Rules.......2005-10-26
This book is the best book I ever read. Dick Butkus is the greatest human being who ever bit of a refs ear. I would recommend anyone thinking of becoming a serial killer read this book. I like cookies and , milk.
Dissapointing.......2005-10-10
A very comprehensive study of each and every season Butkus played with the Bears. But I was hoping for much more about Butkus's life off the football field. I would have liked to have heard more anecdotes about players he played with and against. Also would have been interesting to hear personal insights from Dick regarding what he felt about the awe-like reputation he inspired on the field from fans and players alike.
This reads too much as a season-by-season and game-by-game account of his career. Interesting at first but repetitive and dry over time. I was hoping for more.
Great Read about the greatest Football player ever.........2003-06-09
I loved it!
But then again I am a huge Bears fan and a huge Butkus fan, good ol 51 played the game like nobody ever did and I enjoyed reading about how he grewup and about the Bears on and off the field and its mangement,I always thought Bears mangement has always been skummy and this book proved me right,I loved this book though as it was great to hear stories about the players and how they spent there time and about picciolo and sayers etc,
I met Butkus about 4months ago and he looks great and seams to be doing well.
Best Ever at Linebacker.......2000-02-06
Never been a Bears fan, never will. But who amongst us growing up in the '60s and loving football, did not admire Dick Butkus? Whatta' player! I loved the cover of this book! What a menacing figure! Let's talk about the book. Overall, a good, insightful book but a couple of items disappointed me. First, the ramblings about his falling out with the Bears. After many pages, I felt like saying, 'Get over it!' but considering who I would be speaking to...well. Second, I was curious what his kids grew up to be like. Not much mention of his wife nowadays either. But, this is a book about Butkus and his life was football. Fun to read...
Book Description
The Cinema of Tony Richardson examines for the first time the stage and screen achievements of Academy Award-winning director Tony Richardson, and includes recent interviews with his colleagues as well as a complete bibliography and filmography of his work.
An important cultural trend-setter both in Britain and America, Richardson is here given his due as an influential and inventive film director who specialized in literary adaptations and worked constantly in theater, film, and television production. Richardson (1928-1991) worked with George Devine at the Royal Court Theatre during the 1950s where he revolutionized British theater through his productions of John Osborne's plays Look Back in Anger (1956) and The Entertainer (1957). Both plays were then adapted to the cinema, launching Richardson's career as a feature film director. Richardson and Osborne later founded Windfall Film Productions, Ltd. to extend the concerns of "kitchen sink" realism from stage to screen and to make films that display the reality of British life. The Osborne projects were followed by screen adaptations of Shelagh Delaney's A Taste of Honey (1961) and Alan Sillitoe's The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), which became benchmark films for the British New Wave. Richardson went on to a distinguished career in Hollywood as a result of his Academy Award-winning 1963 adaptation of Henry Fielding's satiric novel Tom Jones.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and accessible.......2000-11-23
A good range of essays about Richardson's key films. Most of the essays are easily read (not overly academic)--the work with TOM JONES is especially solid. Recommended as an overview of a talented man's career

Product Description
African Friends and Money Matters grew out of frustrations that Westerners experience when they travel and work in Africa. Africans have just as many frustrations relating to the Westerners in their midst. Each uses and manages money and other resources in very different ways, and these differences create many misunderstandings and frictions.
The author deals with everyday life in Africa. He first introduces the very different goals of African and Western economic systems and then presents ninety observations of African behaviors related to money matters. Explanatory comments are given that show how each one works out in real life. He illustrates his and others' experiences with anecdotes from across the continent. Drawings by two African artists add further clarity to the text as they capture Africans and Westerners in authentic situations. The result is that the reader is able to make sense of customs that at first seem incomprehensible.
This book will be of interest to Westerners living, working, or traveling in sub-Saharan Africa: business, government, diplomatic, and NGO personnel, religious workers, journalists, development sociologists, and tourists. The audience also includes professors and students in African studies. Africans will also be interested for what it reveals about Western culture and many of the significant ways Westerners react to Africa.

Read this before you arrive........2007-07-28
Essential reading for any Westerner going to live in Africa. Might also be useful to Africans living in the West, or with Western friends and colleagues.
A better understanding of African culture.......2007-07-18
David Maranz describes a variety of experiences which finally ends up being a tapestry of African culture. Reading this book helps explain why so much African aid is misdirected, misspent and misappropriated.
Anyone wanting to gain a deeper understanding of Africa's problems must read this book. At times there is some redundancy in the anecdotes related. But overall it is a valuable book.
So Much to Learn About Our African Friends.......2007-05-21
I purchased this book because I interact with people from Kenya who are in a partnership with our Presbytery (district church organization) and everything I read in this book rings true with my experience. Now, instead of thinking "they just want our money" or "they're always asking" I can look at the frequent requests as a difference in our outlook on money and personal relationships. There is a richness in their attitudes that I can appreciate and I can learn to respond in more thoughtful ways that express our cultural viewpoint while accepting their community understanding of the use of resources, especially money. How much we have to learn from one another!
This book is easy to understand, practical, and caring.
At Last an Explanation for My Own African Experiences.......2006-11-10
I have had difficulty understanding why my African brothers and sisters are not good at being accountable for funds. This book explains how overriding, compelling short-term needs have culturally biased use and thinking with respect to budgets and resource allocation.
This insight is worth the price of the book. The African vs the Western thought format is tedious at times. But nevertheless, this book is a good read with many stories that illustrate the points of how Africans look at money.
The book has no strong formula how to deal with the sense of shared possession of money in informal community structures - you are either never accepted or must share (all) money in a communal needs concept. Saving for future unyet specified need is an extravagance beyond the African culture's comprehension.
To be accountable to Western donors, organizations need accountability. Either Africans need extensive training and coaching in Western budget and project management concepts or denied access to funds when an accounting will occur.
Now Africa makes a lot more sense.......2006-07-31
This is an incisive, sociological story that grips like a good novel.
In the musical "My Fair Lady", Professor Henry Higgins when realizing that he cannot control his "project" student, Eliza Doolittle, sings lamenting "Why can't a woman be more like a man..." It is very easy for us born into a certain culture to have that feeling about particularly 3rd world cultures, and especially about sub-Saharan Africa. Westerners (North Americans and Europeans) often come away from Africa perplexed about life-style and ways of doing things. "Why do they...." and "How do they..." preface our questions when we think of actions we observe that seem counter-productive or may appear to "shoot a society in the foot." Why might money given for fertilizer to be purchased in May, instead be spent on a family wedding in April? How can one be a friend without seeming like a "sugar-daddy"? How can anyone maintain 40 "very-close friends"?
David Maranz, an anthropologist with 25 years experience working in Senegal with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, has written an introduction to the whys and hows of African life, based on his experience and numerous interviews he has had with both native Africas and Westerners living in Africa. This is an "Aha!" type of book, some of which may apply to societies in other countries as well. Dr. Maranz's discoveries are fascinating and often entertaining. Better yet, they provide important answers and background necessary for the respectful and productive interaction of drastically different cultures. He is clear to make the point that his assessment is not a one-size-fits-all in describing the many countries and multiple tribes within countries of Africa. This book is not complicated reading, but serves as an introduction to those curiosities and differences we have with the cultures of a large continent
This book is a MUST READ for anyone who has been to Africa, will be visiting Africa, knows anyone in Africa, or who has any interest in Africa and world affairs. It would also be helpful to native Africans wishing to better understand Western culture. This information may also suggest why what has perhaps worked well for African groups for centuries, may not work so well in the future.
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT BIOGRAPHY.......2007-02-10
If you are an Angela Lansbury fan like I am, you will love this book. It tells of her family, her marriage, children, her days at MGM, her talks and encounters with movie stars, her movie career, Murder She Wrote and after. It is a well-written book not trashy like the Kitty Kelly biographies or sugar coated. I enjoyed reading this book. A GREAT READ.
Interesting, Especially About Her Fans.......2003-05-28
This authorized biography of Angela Lansbury is interesting and well-written...but she was a part of the project, had final say over what was and wasn't included, and left SO MUCH out! Her personal life is covered much better in the other two unauthorized biographies of Angela Lansbury. But what really floored me in this one was her descriptions of "fan psychology" and the way she talks about teenagers who looked up to the character she portrayed in shows like "Mame." She describes the kids' adulation of her in terms of being "a tragedy." While one fan clearly became out of control in terms of following her around and pestering her, the rest of us - legions of us - didn't. Hello! What's so tragic about children looking up to, and being inspired by, a responsible celebrity?
Superb.......2002-01-26
With angela Lansbury's cooperation, the author was able to construct the life of the star and her dreams without being intrusive into episodes of her life. He truly respected the subject and the star rewarded him with candor. it is too often that authors choose biographies to sensationalize a life. In this case, the author told it straight but with humanity and dignity and affection for a woman of icnredible talent and character.
Outstanding Biography Of An Outstanding Performer.......2000-09-16
This is one of the finest celebrity biographies that I have ever read. Actress Angela Lansbury is profiled with candor and wit in Martin Gottfried's "Balancing Act". Gottfried conducted countless interviews with the star herself of whom he says, "No biographical subject could have been more cooperative.", and many, many of those who knew her and worked with her. The book details her early life in London, her arrival in America during WWII, and her first film, at MGM, where they promptly decided to change her name to "Angela Marlow". The book writes with candor about her first failed marriage and her Hollywood years into the late forties, when she married Peter Shaw (and the marriage is still going strong). In the early fifties, she gave birth to her son Anthony and daughter Deidre Shaw, and in the late sixties, with her Hollywood career in a slump, she bounced back on Broadway in her Tony-Award winning title role in the musical "Mame". The book is at its most exciting when detailing her Broadway career, and not just with "Mame", but with her three other Tony-Award winning roles in "Dear World", "Gypsy", and "Sweeney Todd". And after Broadway, Lansbury conquered television with her ever-popular "Murder, She Wrote" series. Since then, Lansbury has enjoyed steady acting and puttering in her rose garden. Many humorous anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories told by Lansbury concern stars like Ingrid Bergman, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Bea Arthur among them. She is a rueful raconteur and thrilled with her extraordinary professional and personal life. With the color and gusto of "Balancing Act", Angela Lansbury is profiled up close and personal and, as always, absolutely great!
Not only a mere biography of a great Star!.......2000-04-22
This is not a mere biography of a great Hollywood and Broadway Star. Here you can "listen" to her voice too, you can share her best and worst moments while acting in Broadway and Hollywood. You should read it even if you think you already know Angela Lansbury; and if you're a big fan of this wonderful actress, you HAVE to read it.

This text covers the basics of political science. Linking fundamental concepts with contemporary political events and controversies, Grigsby discusses all major topics and illustrates the ways in which these topics impact their lives.
Customer Reviews:
Correcting "A Student".......2006-07-25
I haven't used this book, but need to correct the review by "A Student."
The roots of the Republican Party are classical liberalism. I.e., the liberalism of John Locke; the liberalism that believes in individual property rights and free markets. We call Republicans conservatives, but the classical conservatives believed in a more rigid class system and distrusted free markets because they disrupt social orders.
Perhaps "A Student" should have spent more time listening and less time complaining. He might have learned something.
And that, in a nutshell, is the great difficulty in teaching political science. When teaching chemistry, students don't assume they already know everything. When teaching political science, some students are unable to learn because they are convinced they already know. It only happens with strong conservatives and strong liberals. God bless the moderates--they're the only ones with open minds.
extremely liberally biased view of politics.......2004-07-29
I used this book for PoliSci 101 and although I found it easy to read, I was bothered throughout by the assumptions that every person shares Grigsby's liberal political views on abortion, homosexual issues, etc. I felt as if this book was trying to convert all students into democrats, as if it were THE WAY. The message throughout was, democrat=good, republican=bad. The text even misconstrued the Republican party roots by calling it quote, classical liberalism, unquote. I would rather a textbook to be more unbiased and present information without a liberal agenda attached. However, this may be why it appeals to university professors in the first place.
Excellent, Comprehensive-- A Great Intro.......2000-12-11
You couldn't ask for more in an intro to Political Science text. Grigsby, as fabulous a writer as she is a professor, does a commendable job of raising questions and stating facts about the field of politics and society in general while keeping a detached tone. She applies abstract concepts to real life situations. This is a wonderful book from a great teacher. A must read for 101-variety polisci classes.

Book Description
"A veritable Who's Who of pioneer cattlemen."Elmer Kelton, from the Foreword
John and Mahlon Thatcher were two of the many pioneers looking to begin a new life in the great open spaces of the West. In the 1860s, the brothers began a small mercantile in the town of Pueblo, Colorado. From a small safe in the corner of their new store, the brothers founded what was to become the First National Bank of Pueblo, Coloradoand the beginnings of a financial empire that would encompass cattle companies from New Mexico to Canada. Together with such legendary figures as Frank Bloom, Henry Cresswell, O. H. Perry Baxter, William Anderson, Burton Mossman, and Mahlon T. Everhart, they created a cattle empire, financing and directing the Bloom Land and Cattle Company, the Diamond A Cattle Company, and the Hatchet Cattle Company. Their herds of cattle, horses, and sheep ranged on some eleven million acres of land. Great Plains Cattle Empire tells their stories, spanning the years from just after the Civil War to World War II.
Customer Reviews:
The real Colorado Cattle Barons.......2000-12-05
A cattle ranching history of the Thatcher Brothers and their brother in law Frank Bloom is long overdue. These businessmen were real people with the entreprenuerial spirt to recognize opportunities and the ability to act on their instincts. Their business acumen and ability to diversify their finances enabled them to promote the Hereford cattle industry despite numerous obstacles...limited water, the elements of weather, and vast rangelands amounting to 11 million acres. Patterson and Poole have done their homework and provided us with an authentic, well researched story on these early cattle ranches who rivalled other more well known operations such as the Prairie Land and Cattle Company from the Panhandle area. It is remarkable that Charlie Russell worked for the circle Diamond prior to becoming a western artist. The Thatcher and Bloom associations with Goodnight, Cresswell, Tony Day, Cap Mossman and the Iliff family of Denver are all indicative of their far reaching influence and successful longevity. Patterson's ability to turn a phrase which is filled with western jargon and cattle ranching terms reinforces his first hand knowledge of cattle ranching. The true history of these early cattle companies is a fascinating story of real people who worked hard to settle the American West.

Book Description
The Great Plains were once characterized by vast expanses of grass, complex interdependence among species, and dynamic annual changes due to weather, waterways, and fire. It is now generally accepted that less than one percent of the original tallgrass prairie remains. Habitat fragmentation, the loss of natural predator-prey associations, changes in species composition, and various commercial practices continue to threaten grassland biodiversity.
Recently scholars and conservationists have discussed opportunities for large-scale restoration projects in the Great Plains, but they have provided few details. Daniel Licht offers here a bold new approach to restoring and conserving the grassland ecosystem. In describing hypothetical reserves, he explains how they could help conserve grassland biodiversity, reduce federal expenditures on agriculture, increase recreational opportunities, and sustain rural economies outside the reserves.
Customer Reviews:
informative & well-written.......2000-08-05
This book discusses the ecology & conservation needs of several threatened & endangered "keystone" species of the plains, and a plan to set aside large landscape-scale nature preserves to protect them. Though the author is from the northern plains, he seems well-traveled and informed on conservation issues here in Oklahoma, as well as other states in the region. I found the book very informative, esp. the chapters dealing with federal farm programs. While I disagree with the author on several points, I think the book proves that landscape-scale conservation of the North American Prairies is economically feasible. I would recommend this book to anyone working in the conservation field in the plains states.
This book illuminates issues of extraordinary importance.......1999-08-16
Daniel Licht explains why it is in the nation's best interest to establish what he calls grassland "reserves" in most of the thirteen states of the grasslands biome. Such reserves--he suggests ten--must be landscape scale. His range from 400 to over 8,000 square miles. These reserves may be the only way to assure the long term survival of many grasslands species of wildlife but biodiversity is not their only rationale. They would reduce wasteful farm subsidies, relieve pressures on scarce water resources, provide tourism-based employment in areas suffering stagnant economies, and stabilize human populations in grassland counties with fewer humans now than before European settlement. Besides, the prairie grasslands biome was once the continent's largest ecosystem. Now it is the smallest. Grassland reserves, Licht argues, may well be the highest, best, and most productive use for this land. His book is compelling and should be read carefully by all who have an interest in the environment in general, and the prairie grasslands in particular. Besides, we need vast prairies for their mysterious value in preserving wildness. Licht quotes Leopoldo's famous observation about how relegating grizzly bears to Alaska is "like relegating happiness to heaven; one may never get there." The vast midlands of our country are nearby and we need some nearby wildness to restore human balance along with biodiversity. And we can reduce federal subsidies for excess farm capacity at the same time. This should be a winning idea. Read this book and then spread his ideas across the political landscape like a prairie wildfire.
This is a very important book........1998-11-30
I came across this book researching the economic future of my hometown in western North Dakota. There has been a noticeable deterioration in the economy of this region. Grain farmers, ranchers, and related businesses are stuggling. Many people have moved or are thinking about it. Dan Licht's book identifies economic trends and environmental factors which predict historic changes for this region. It should be required reading for community leaders.

Book Description
A multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach is employed to identify principal ecosystems and natural resources in the U.S. Great Plains that are at risk and that should receive priority for protection. The authors are drawn from a variety of disciplines and approaches, their ideas being presented as a pooling or harvest, rather than as a consensus. The 25 chapters provide background and in-depth discussion of multiple issues/problems related to Great Plains stewardship for future generations. The status and trends of major resources of the Great Plains within an historical, ecological and management framework are categorized according to common goals across the disciplines and can be used to make recommendations for public policy, research and development, and institutions. The challenge for residents of the Great Plains is to merge multiple ecosystem concepts to improve the environment and to improve economic vitality.
Book Description
In The Future of the Southern Plains, scholars bring the region to the forefront by asking important questions about its past and suggesting prospects for its future. The contributors, some of them natives of the region, bring to their work a blend of scholarship and personal experience. They match intellectual sophistication with deep affection for a place defined primarily as western Texas, Oklahoma, and eastern New Mexico. Within this volume is a story about America, a story about limits, and a story about challenging those limits. Seven historians, one geographer, and a paleoclimatologist contribute a wealth of observation, analysis, and commentary on the environmental characteristics and history of the Southern Plains. They address such themes as failing communities, scarce water, endangered species, and disappearing ways of life-and the possible results of these developments not only in the Southern Plains but elsewhere on the globe.
Based on presentations at a symposium sponsored by the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University, these essays treat the most important aspects of life on the Southern Plains today, from climate, politics, and religion to business and environmental renewal.
Customer Reviews:
A multi-faceted history of the region.......2003-12-15
This is a long overdue book about a region of the country that is generally overlooked by historians. The Southern Plains is defined as western Texas, Oklahoma, and eastern New Mexico. In eight essays by such notable authorities as Elliott West, Dan Flores, John Morris, and Diana Olien the reader is treated to the multi-faceted history of the region.
It's all here, the history of human occupation, exploitation, the climate, land, resources, and the never-ending effort to build a future in an area that resists change. This is a must book for any reader remotely interested in the history and future of an area that occupies the center of the United States but is rarely understood.
