Magnificent account on a very interesting time.......2003-08-08
At first i wasnt that impressed with the title but i ordered anyway because i wanted to learn about the zars of Russia as much as possible.I am glad to say that this book is fantastic. It is well written and well documented.I love the no non-sense approach of the author when telling the story. The way he describes the characters and the intrigues during that difficult time is excellent. He uses his sources very well and he always explains every necessary detail without fancy or difficult terms.I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in how was Russia under the tsars.

Book Description
An historical novel based on the true life story of Frank Gotch, world heavyweight wrestling champion from 1908 to 1915. Gotch was the number one athlete of his era and as well known then as Michael Jordan is today. This book takes the reader on a nostalgic tour of the United States and professional athletics at the turn of the century and shortly thereafter.
Customer Reviews:
Not a Hero.......2006-12-07
If you like breaking people's limbs for fun, then Gotch was a hero. Yes he was good. He was also a brutal, petty, cheat who fixed matches against wrestlers he could have beaten anyhow. Please don't make a movie out of this subject.
This book has tremendous research behind it.......2006-11-21
Good grief.... reading the newspapers of the era shows how much the sportswriters DID buy into the fact that wrestling was NOT a work! Huge, front page stories, and move-by-move accounts of most of Gotch's biggest matches. When Gotch beat Tom Jenkins, the reporters were spellbound, calling it the most terrific sporting event ever seen in that state. Gotch's matches were huge for the day and President Roosevelt invited him to the White House where he made a Japanese martial arts expert tap out. In a new book coming out on Madea, called "The Tougehst Man Who Ever Lived," the authors go to great length to say a match between Gotch, a shooter, and Madea would have been the best showdown ever. How could that be if Gotch was a phoney worker? This reviewer needs to study the reports of the day and talk to some old-time hookers. Gotch was a hooker and a ferocious competitor. There is indisputable evidence that Hackenschmidt was still upset with the losses to Gotch 50 years later! Wow, was he still working the crowd? I spent 40 years researching this era and this man and have read everything I could and have talked to a dozen "old-timers," all of whom say Gotch was a pure shooter and the best ever. Thie previous reviewer is way off base.
Poor research or maybe questionable motives.......2005-07-19
The author seems to ignore some basic facts that any amateur researcher could easily discover. The most improtant being this: Gotch did works! He did them often. Wrestling was almost as worked then as it is now. Read the newspapers from that time for yourself and don't rely on the author. The reporters covering wrestling back then were in a position to know what was legit and what wasn't.
Chapman seems to have some agenda built around creating a mythology of legitimate professional wrestling from a bygone era. Unfortunately, he has resorted to stretching the truth, and that's putting it kindly.
recommended for any up and coming athlete.......2005-03-18
this was an amazing piece on the life of frank gotch. you are completely transported back in time and are part of the action in every scenario. the book was extremely well written as it takes you on a journey WITH gotch and all that he endured. it is almost as if you are standing ring side at every match and every conversation. i was very impressed with the verbage as it seems very accurate to the time and place of the novel. it did leave me wondering if mike chapman is gotch reincarnated.....
Amazing Book!.......2000-08-22
The book Gotch:An American Hero is extremely well-written.Chapman is VERY descriptive. His use of details puts the reader right in the middle of the action. He conveys emotions very well.Even though it is a historical novel, the book is full of information about the world of professional wrestling in the early 1900s. If I could have given it more than five stars,I certainly would.Mike Chapman has written a very impressive book. I urge all people interested in the history of wrestling to read this.

Interesting.......2000-01-04
Hmm, I never realized that TSR killed off this line of acessories. As far as I know, it is no more than two years old, and it's still fully viable on the webs ( heck, even Amazon carries a large selection of all things Birthright!). Nevertheless, Birthright is a unique setting, and it can be easily enjoyed. This book is a very good work on the nature of priestcraft in the world where this campaign is set ( and if it IS killed off, I advise you to get it quickly - out of print products don't linger too long on this site). It is also a very good work of AD&D priestcraft in general, and although it isn't as likely to help players as it will help DMs, but take my word - this book will ease the life of DMs immensely (remember that player whose priest would constantly stop to cast healing spells on everyone? Well, this book will stop that overconfident character dead in his tracks...)
Grab this before it's gone!!!.......1999-03-09
TSR's only misstep since its revitalization is cancellation of the Birthright line. This book details the religions and priests of Cerilia, and is a very good supplement. Why more people didn't get into Birthright and keep the line alive is a mystery to me.

Book Description
Anyone who has read her bestseller
Mama Makes Up Her Mind--or who has heard her on National Public Radio--knows that Bailey White is one of the keenest observers of Southern eccentricity since Mark Twain.
Sleeping at the Starlite Motel revives White's reputation as a master storyteller, Southern division, as it catalogs the oddities of the Georgia town she knows so well.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe you have to be Southern to Get this book.......2005-08-04
I bought this book because I was looking for light summer reading and the idea of short stories seemed like a great idea for a few days at the beach when you don't want to think too hard. I had heard great reviews when it was released a few years ago - and even my own mother recommended it. However, it left me a little unsatisfied during the read. Most of the stories were about somewhat off kilter southern folks and their quirky experiences. That would have been fine except some didn't even seem to have a point to the meandering stories. Some were engaging and moving, but for the most part I was disappointed.
A funny thing happened . . . .......2004-11-10
Bailey White's book of short stories/narratives that describe crazy relatives and neighbors, interesting experiences with folks traveling through, and the adventures of daily life is a great addition to any reader's collection of southern literature. I particularly loved "Computer Class," which tells the tale of two elementary school teachers who skip out on computer training to go to the dog races.
White has a tender way of writing about all of her "characters." She notes people's eccentricities, but she doesn't judge them or look down on them. In many ways, she seems to delight in all the "differences" that make people (and the world) interesting. A great read. If you like this book, you'll LOVE Mama Makes up Her Mind, which I thought was even better than this one.
not a huge waste of time.......2003-11-18
i couldn't decide between three and four stars. at first i wondered, "why am i reading this?" because the book is really kind of pointless. but some of the stories made me laugh. each story gives an interesting perspective and reminds you of the odd people and places you've known, so it wasn't entirely a waste of time. but i still couldn't figure out why the stories were really compiled together into one book--when i first picked it up i understood that the book was a compilation of stories and vignettes, but it also gives the impression that they are in some way linked by a common thread or something. but they're really not. in the end i'm glad i read it.
If it is written by bailey white -- read it!.......2002-07-02
I urge you to read anything you can that is written by Bailey White. I am currently sharing all three of her books, Mama makes up her mind, Sleeping at the Starlite Motel, and Quite a Year For Plums with my 70 year old mother and my 14 year old daughter. Her writing transcends generations. We read passages outloud to each other. From worms doing gymnastics from the ceilings to every possible strange character, her books are a delight.
Not as good as her first book, Mama Makes Up Her Mind........2000-12-18
I read this book because I truly enjoyed her previous work, Mama Makes Up Her Mind. But I was disappointed by this one. Several short stories seemed to have not much substance and not very funny altogether. I enjoyed less than half of all stories, ie. Red the Rat Man, Career Choices, Computer School, Horror Movies.

History buff's delight.......2000-05-05
I bought this book for research and am delighted by what I received. From ancient times to our day, WAR IN THE HOLY LAND shows in perfect detail the battles fought to possess this land. One hundred maps as well as color and B&W photos add a visual punch to the history of one of the most troubled places on earth. The past of warfare in the Middle East is clearly shown. About the only thing not told is what the next thousand years will bring.

Book Description
Collective violence changes the perpetrators, victims, and societies in which it occurs. It targets the body, the psyche, and the socio-cultural order. How do people come to terms with these tragic events? This groundbreaking collection of essays by anthropologists, psychologists and psychoanalysts, drawing on field research in many different parts of the world, profits from an interdisciplinary dialogue. Providing provocative, at times deeply troubling, insights into the darker side of humanity, it also proposes new ways of understanding the terrible things that people are capable of doing to each other.

Book Description
Society is under siege & ndash; under attack on two fronts: from the global frontier-land where old structures and rules do not hold and new ones are slow to take shape, and from the fluid, undefined domain of life politics. The space between these two fronts, until recently ruled by the sovereign nation-state and identified by social scientists as & lsquo;society' is ever more difficult to conceive of as a self-enclosed entity. And this confronts the established wisdom of the social sciences with a new challenge: sovereignty and power are becoming separated from the politics of the territorial nation-state but are not becoming institutionalized in a new space. What are the consequences of this profound transformation of social life? What kind of world will it create for the twenty-first century? This remarkable book & ndash; by one of the most original social thinkers writing today & ndash; attempts to trace this transformation and to assess its consequences for the life conditions of ordinary individuals. The first part of the book is devoted to the new global arena in which, thanks to the powerful forces of globalization, there is no 'outside', no secluded place to which one can retreat and hide away, and where the territorial wars of the past have given way to a new breed of 'reconnaissance wars'. The second part deals with settings in which life politics has taken hold and flourished. Bauman argues that the great challenge facing us today is whether we can find new ways to reforge the human diversity that is our fate into the vocation of human solidarity.

A wonderful journey back in time.......1999-03-30
A captivating, romantic story set in Revolutionary Massachusetts. Not only historically interesting and factual, but the author also manages to take your emotions on a delightful "journey" filled with anticipation and the unexpected right through to the end of this fascinating tale! Author, Mary Carter, has a gift for telling a story and with this novel we, the readers, are the lucky ones to be on the receiving end of her tremendous talent! Bravo!!!
A genuine gold nugget.......1999-03-05
A real treat! This historical novel set in Revolutionary Massachusetts provides a sensitive love story woven around a fascinating journey through New England's revolutionary times. This is a novel that pays careful attention to detail (General Gage really was noted to look just like Samual Adams). Author Mary Carter has a delightful and mischievous sense of humor, and her knowledge of her subject matter shows. A real winner.

Book Description
Connecticut Wildlife is the lavishly illustrated, exhaustive overview of the ecosystems of Connecticut, its plants and animals, and the ecological links among the state's wildlife and their habitats--from butterflies to red foxes, jellyfish to double-crested cormorants, poison ivy to phytoplankton. It carefully traces Connecticut's daily, seasonal, annual, and long-term cycles, which range from the dynamics of natural communities to patterns of reproduction and behavior in major groups of organisms. Whether looking at individual species or broad ecosystems, Geoffrey A. Hammerson's conservationist perspective shines in Connecticut Wildlife. The book will become an essential part of the libraries of every naturalist, conservationist, and educator in Connecticut and the Northeast.

A lot of info for a little state.......2004-08-21
This is a great reference book for Connecticut wildlife, from deer to aphids, and trees to lichens.
Many of the entries are written in a conversational tone, with the author sharing his experiences with that species in Connecticut. He will say something like, "I have often seen this species breeding in shallow pools of Milford in April" or "This species is limited to the traprock ridges of central Connecticut". That is what makes this book different from so many other reference books out there.
The book is not necessarily an identification key, although it would certainly be helpful when trying to identify a species. It is more a description of the species found in the state and how they live. That is certainly handy when all you've got is a guide for, say, trees of North America and many of the trees shown do not even live in Connecticut. Here you would find out that Chinquapin oak or yellow oak are rare on limestone ridges and ledges in western Connecticut, that scarlet oak is shade intolerant, and black oak is typical of dry, sandy soils.
There is also general information about wildlife and the many types of ecosystems found in Connecticut. You can use this book to learn about vernal pools, salt-marshes, or the Connecticut River. There is a discussion about how insects tolerate being frozen and another on how galls are made.
There are a lot of pictures in the book, but there is not a picture of each species listed, which I think is a drawback.
Entries are organized by biological classification, for example, 'segmented worms', with a brief introduction of that group.
