Multiplatinum-selling gangsta rapper, serial marijuana abuser ... and God-fearing family man? That's how Snoop Dogg tells it in Tha Doggfather, a straightforward (by his lights, anyway) telling of his own story. From slinging crack in the ghetto of Long Beach, California, to rapping the tales that brought hip-hop to a new level commercially in the early '90s, to a murder charge that he beat in 1996, this is Snoop's story. Many of the facts won't surprise, though his candor might; the former Calvin Broadus isn't much interested in apologizing, even for things he might have done that potentially conflicted with his current goal to "increase the peace." Some of the guy's pronouncements would fit right in on the milder-mannered daytime talk shows ("God is on your side and... He cares about you trying the best you can, no matter who you are"), while others are so edgily funny he hasn't even managed to fit them into a rap ("there's nothing more dangerous than a Sherm head with an attitude," he says of those whose high of choice is a cigarette dipped in embalming fluid). Snoop cautiously criticizes now-imprisoned former Death Row Records head Suge Knight while skirting the hard questions about friend Tupac Shakur's death after a Las Vegas shooting incident. Some things, it seems, are a little hard even for tha Doggfather to ponder. --Rickey Wright

Book Description

This is a tale of a young man's struggle against a system that consigned him to a destiny of poverty, crime, and hopelessness from birth. Set against the mean streets of L.A.'s South Bay 'hoods, the book is populated by a cast of vivid characters, including Tupac Shakur, Snoop's one true friend and musical soulmate, cut down at the beginning of a brilliant career, and Suge Knight, whose Death Row Records brought street-level credibility--and gangland tactics--into the corporate suites of the entertainment industry.

From the Crip gang members who recruited Snoop virtually off the playground to the pimps and players, whores and hustlers who formed his extended family on the streets and behind prison walls, Tha Doggfather offers a scathing, unexpurgated look at life on the edge in a modern urban jungle. Snoop's rise to the pinnacle of rap stardom is chronicled, along with his nearly career-ending arrest and trial for a murder he didn't commit.

Raised to the pinnacle, brought to the brink, Snoop Dogg eventually found sanity and salvation in his relationship with Shantay Taylor, his high school sweetheart. Married in 1997, the couple started a new life with their two young sons, even as Snoop's career reached new heights in his creative collaboration with Master P and No Limit Records.

WELL I READ THIS BOOK AND IN MY OPINION GROWING UP IN THE STREETS OF CHICAGO, YES DRUGS, SHOOTINGS ETC...THIS DIDN'T SEEM LIKE ANYTHING NEW TO ME, SO HE SOLD DOPE, GOT FAMOUS AND NOW LIVES LARGE. END OF STORY, MY LIFE WAS MUCH ROUGHER, HE HAD A GOOD HOME FROM WHAT IT SEEMS, C'MON GOOD IN SCHOOL, GRADUATES? PEOPLE I KNEW WERE LUCKY TO MAKE IT TO HIGH SCHOOL, WORK WAS FIRST IF YOU HAD TO SURVIVE. HE IS SO COMMERCIAL! THIS IS SO PHONY OR SOMETHING, RAGS TO RICHES? HE CHOSE TO BE BAD HE SAID IT IN HIS BOOK, HE WANTED TO BE THE THUG THAT HE WAS AND NOW I SEE HIM LIKE A MAMA'S BOY WHO JUST WANTED TO BE A PUNK AND THAT IS IT, I THINK HE SHOULD HAVE KEPT HIS STORY TO THE KIDS IN LONG BEACH, LOTS OF FOLKS GREW UP THIS WAY OR WORSE, HE JUST GOT A RECORD DEAL.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-08-16

I am a real dogg fan and I just loved this book. Snoop has worked hard for everything he has. And his lovely wife stood beside him all the way. You go Dogg!!

2 out of 5 stars Very confused book, very confused man.......2006-03-19

Snoop tries to please everyone with his tale. He wants to make his momma proud by talking about God and spirituality, but he wants to continue his gangsta facade. In the end it comes out completely hypocritical by him essentially saying, "I'm doin God's work by pimpin these mutha ***** ho's, N***!"

The book has it's moments. If Snoop wasn't interesting, why would I have bothered reading about him? But this a book to sleep walk through. Written on a 5th grade reading level, it made for good toilet time.

Don't expect anything profound, nothing truly revealing, and you won't be disappointed. It's simply a PR work.

1 out of 5 stars Are you for real.......2005-03-15

In this story are you trying to say that you died and the devil would make you rich and famous if you gave him your soul and you agreeded? Or is that another book? If its this book then i rate it a 1 and that's that. I wish there was a no star(0)or negative 5 but all the choice I have is 1 so whatever.

Does anyone out there understand what a Gost Writer is? I suppose not... A gost writer is someone that writes peoples books for them. If only a famous personality could actually go out and write a best selling book all by themself. In a perfect world...
But setting this aside, Snoop's literary creation isn't that bad. I think he contradicts himself entirly too much,. but what can I say? It frustrates me to bump his almums and hear him drawling on about Thug this and Thug that, only to go out and write some preachy tale about how gangs and drugs are wack.
However, for some reason or another, I respect Snoop as an artist and a family man.
And despite the fact that his new stuff sucks, his book was sitll partially enlightening.
Peace out.

Given the sweep of two-time Masters' champion Ben Crenshaw's career, there's an irony to the fact that he'll be better remembered for captaining the 1999 Ryder Cup team to its cardiac comeback than for anything he accomplished between the ropes. It's an irony not lost on Crenshaw. He devotes a full fourth of his graceful memoir, A Feel for the Game: To Brookline and Back, to that remarkable event in which, when all seemed lost, he still professed a feeling for victory. Kneeling on the edge of the 17th green as Justin Leonard prepared to hit that cross-country putt on the final day, Crenshaw had the perspicacity and faith to accept that "the impossible was unfolding in front of me." And he let it.

But then, there was much in Crenshaw's career that seems, in retrospect, impossible, like the emotional second Masters' crown won just days after the death of his mentor, the beloved teacher Harvey Penick. Still, it's the Ryder Cup captaincy that defines Crenshaw now, and he turns his prodigious grasp of golf history and tradition--the Cup's Brookline venue is particularly significant to him--into a lively and analytic portrait of the event. In both broad strokes and telling detail, he lifts the curtain on his thinking and the Cup's mysteries--from player pairings and those wild Sunday shirts to the remarkable phone call a week later from British captain Mark James essentially accusing the Americans of cheating. In reaction, Gentle Ben belies his nickname. Nor is he gentle in his final screed on how advanced technology is threatening the game. "For centuries, golf has had a strong enough backbone to hold onto its beliefs. I hope it continues." With backbones like Crenshaw's stiffening for battle, there's reason to believe it will. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

"I'm going to leave y'all with one thought. I'm a big believer in fate. I have a good feeling about this."
--Ben Crenshaw, Saturday September 25, 1999, twenty-four hours before the most stunning Ryder Cup comeback victory in history

A uniquely compelling work that transcends traditional autobiography, A Feel for the Game is an anecdotal and personal portrait of a man and a game that were made for each other.

With two Masters Championships, nineteen career PGA victories, three NCAA championships, and millions in earnings, Ben Crenshaw is without question one of the most successful golfers of the century. But Crenshaw's relationship to his sport goes beyond his individual performances. As captain of the 1999 Ryder Cup team, confronting the largest deficit in tournament history, Crenshaw believed in his players and was confident enough in his study of golf history to trust his feel for the game. In a hard-fought competition that kept viewers glued to their televisions, he brilliantly marshaled a team of diverse personalities and brought the Ryder Cup back to American soil. And he did it his way with grace, honor, dedication, and an encyclopedic knowledge of how the game should be played.

A Feel for the Game is Crenshaw's warm and heartfelt ode to the traditions and spirit of golf through the prism of his own life. He describes his early years learning the game from the legend Harvey Penick, and takes readers through his career as an outstanding amateur to his glorious years on the PGA Tour. Who can forget Ben's tribute to Harvey throughout his inspirational 1995 Masters championship run? Crenshaw sees his success as an extension of his interest in the game's greatest players and teachers Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Jackie Burke, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Kite, Payne Stewart, and Tiger Woods. Every person that crosses Ben's path, and every golf course that he has had the pleasure to play or design, inspires him. Crenshaw's reminiscences, his fascinating glimpses into golf history, and his unparalleled understanding of the nuances of play make this a must-have book for every serious fan of the world's most popular pastime.

As one of Ben's biggest fans, I so looked forward to this book. How did it feel to have so much adulation so young, the frustration of his many near misses, his personal ups and downs, and insights into his peers ?

Sadly, this book conveyed none of the above, and, frankly, told me little more about Ben than I already knew. A wasted opportunity.

3 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity.......2001-05-11

As a lifelong golfer and Ben Crenshaw admirer, I waited in anticipation for Crenshaw's story, both of his development in the game as well as his version of the 1999 Ryder Cup. After finishing "A Feel for the Game," my first question is: did co-writer Melanie Hauser do ANYTHING on this book? There is no writing style; it's as though Crenshaw simply rambled into a tape recorder and Texas golf writer Hauser merely did the transcribing. The end result is a cliche-ridden effort where friends and associates are described with little more than banal generalities, such as Crenshaw's portrait of former Augusta National Chairman Bill Lane as "a very nice man." Believe me, that's as much texture as you'll get when trying to learn about some of the most powerful and fascinating people in golf.

With a slew of course records as a teenager and three straight NCAA championships, there's no doubt that Ben was a prodigy, as one golf magazine described him, "The College Kid Who Beats the Pros." Left completely out of "Feel for the Game" is HOW Crenshaw became so skilled. Yes, he played a lot at Austin Muni and Austin Country Club, but both Crenshaw and Hauser failed to let even a hint of Ben's ego to come through and the result is a lukewarm history that could have been so very much richer. The result fails to amaze or even inspire. Hauser's voice is nowhere to be heard and while it's certainly not HER book, the "golly gee," and "oh wow" tone that reflects Crenshaw's renowned polite gentlemanliness sadly causes "Game" to sound like little more than a list of happy facts. The potential was there to provide the reader so much more.

Yes, there is the tale of Crenshaw's Ryder Cup captaincy and here he exhibits more backbone than "Gentle Ben" would normally demonstrate by again explaining the burst of enthusiam ignited by Justin Leonard's winning putt at the fateful 17th. I'm with Crenshaw on this one: if had been the Europeans come from behind victory on home soil, that bunch would have acted in exactly the same manner.

Unless one is Jack Nicklaus, you don't have many autobiographies in you and the fact that this is Crenshaw's certainly leaves one wishing there had been a more concerted effort to put some bite in the story of this athlete who has been so affected by fate through his golfing life. Crenshaw admits that a number of writers had initially been enlisted to help him with the tale... it's just too bad that Melanie Hauser brought only a tape recorder and left her reportorial instincts on the putting green.

3 out of 5 stars Hey here's a bandwagon lets jump on it.......2001-05-01

It is a great pity that someone who I have no doubt has the highest integrity and honour should feel the need to jump on the Brookline Bandwagon.

In exactly the same way as Mark James did Ben has chosen to use the degeneration of one of the true last great sports to sell a book. Both Ben and Mark should consider their responsibilities to the game of Golf which is bigger than both of them. The shameful scenes (The USA celebrating and Europe sulking) at Brookline should not have been an opportunity to cash in but a lesson in how not to behave.

The remainder of Ben's book tells of the honour of the great game and the many great people who have played it. The legacy of Brookline let Ben, his contemparies and peers badly down. It should be a lesson to all of how not to continue.

Ben is undoubtedly a gentlemen and a great golfer, it is a pity is reputation is sullied by selling an otherwise great read on something that no-one should be proud of. I am afraid one apology will never be enough!

5 out of 5 stars A Book about Golf and Fate.......2001-04-10

This book is Ben Crenshaw. It is very conversational and relaxed and makes you feel like you're sitting around in the Grill Room of your club or around the fireplace, listening to this wonderful person who is a prominent, successful golfer.

The editor did a marvelous job letting this book sound like Ben wrote it. His passion for the game, for the people who are important in his life --- they come out in this great read.

His love of the history and sportsmanship and honor of the game is overarching as the book begins and continues. The fate of his amateur days with the Country Club with Francis Ouiment and later Ryder Cup glory is chilling and superb.

This guy is what the game is all about. He admits to not being the best player ever nor at times, but one can easily see by his life and style why so many pulled for him to win.

His association and passion for Jones and Pennick and his wife and fellow pros is very moving.

I appreciated so much his honest comments on the Ryder Cup at Brookline and the behind the scenes events. Having read James' book on the incident, I'm now more convinced than ever this was just sour grapes on the European captain's part.

This is just an outstanding read. Will take its rightful place in my golf library and in the history of this great sport.

5 out of 5 stars I've Just Got a Good Feeling about This........2001-04-05

The title of this review is one of captain Ben Crenshaw's final statements in his media interview on the night before the finishing day of the 1999 Ryder Cup at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. The next day, the Americans put on a golfing clinic that became what many consider the greatest team comeback victory in golf. This book does a nice job of recounting Mr. Crenshaw's leadership during that Ryder Cup and the highlights of his fantastic golf career. Anyone who is a golf fan will want to own this book.

The book is not so much an autobiography of Mr. Crenshaw's career as it is a series of related essays that share interesting parts of his history and perspectives.

As a golfer, Mr. Crenshaw will probably be equally long remembered for his two Masters championships and for losing 8 playoffs without a win on the PGA tour. But his captaining of the U.S. Ryder Cup team may well be the strongest memory that most will have of his connection to golf.

I had the honor and privilege to be a marshal on the 10th hole throughout the tournament. Early in the final day, people were estimating that the American team had less than one chance in a hundred to win. Then as the magical day unfolded, the Americans won six straight matches. It was nip-and-tuck with the rest. As the gallery cleared the 10th hole, I followed the last groups around the course. I just happened to find myself standing near Michael Jordan near the 17th green as Justin Leonard made the 45 foot putt heard round the world. I estimated the chances of holing that putt at being less than one in two hundred. It was a tough uphill putt with a lot of break on a very fast green. That day will remain in my memory as the most amazing spectator sport experience of my life. Do you remember where you were when Mr. Leonard sunk that putt? 14 1/2 U.S. - 13 1/2 Europe was the final score.

The book has many interesting details and perspectives on the Ryder Cup match. These date back to Mr. Crenshaw's first visit to TCC when he was a teenager for the Junior Amateur. The book also weaves in the story of how the first American came to win the U.S. Open at TCC.

You will find separate chapters on growing up in Austin, Mr. Crenshaw's relationship with Harvey Penick (the pro at the Austin Country Club who taught both Tom Kite and Mr. Crenshaw), his relationship with Mr. Kite, winning the two Masters (one only 7 days after Mr. Penick died, following one final lesson), his experiences with Little Ben (his putter for decades), the temper that earned him the joking nickname of Gentle Ben, his views on other Texas golfers, his personal problems with a divorce and thyroid disease, his reflections of Payne Stewart's death, and the future of golf. He also includes many lists that help explain his favorites in many dimensions (from golf courses to designers).

Mr. Crenshaw is a "feel" golfer, and he talks about the challenges of getting the right feel throughout the book. But he also acts on his feelings, like sharing his confidence about a U.S. victory in the Ryder Cup (the Americans had almost come back to win in Spain two years earlier after being down by five points going into the final day).

After you read this book, I encourage you to remember that you always have a chance as long as you are still breathing. Too often, we "quit" on ourselves. Let your life be imbued with good feelings, and good results will often follow.

Improve your positive feelings about yourself when playing golf, as well as in pursuing the important parts of your life!

Whether you are a one-person department or a member of a Fortune 500 company, the principles of business management apply. This book introduces the opportunity human resources professionals have to move out of the background and into the mainstream of organizational strategy and management. The authors of this book argue that, as organizations come to realize that people are the only dynamic asset in their mix, Human Resource professionals must aggressively evaluate their goals and look at the value-added content of HR activity. A list of Top Ten Measures of HR Effectiveness is offered as a tool. From the Book: "In business we've stopped talking about personnel administration or even human resources management. Now we are dealing with the management of human capital, and human resources is right in the middle of it. It is no longer a cliche to say to say that people are the most important asset of an organization. People are the only dynamic asset. Nothing happens without people. The effectiveness imperative is not measured in a flurry of programs; it is found in business results."

5 out of 5 stars And well written too........2002-06-24

                  Turgay gets it right.

                  A few other observations...

It is very well written. Terse, no padding, well structured. You can get through it in an hour, cover to cover.

It is actionable. Everything discussed is straightforward to execute.

It is realistic. Fritz-Heinz and Phillips embrace HR politics.

It is ambitious. If you're taking care of ordinary HR administrivia without a sweat, this is your roadmap, a framework for getting you to the next level.

I like their ten measures of effectiveness:

                  10. Healthcare cost per employee.

                  9. Pay and benefits as a percentage of operating expense.

                  8. Cost per hire.

                  7. Return on training.

                  6. Turnover rate.

                  5. Turnover cost.

                  4. Time to fill jobs.

                  3. Return on human capital invested.

                  2. Human value added.

                  1. The one that means the most to your boss.

                  It's a pearl.

5 out of 5 stars The HR Star........2000-11-14

"In business we've stopped talking about personnel administration or even human resources management. Now we are dealing with the management of human capital...and human resources is right in the middle of it. It is no longer a cliche to say that people are the most important asset of an organization. People are the only dynamic asset. People are the causal force. Nothing happens without people. The human resources department's role is to help people be more effective in their work, as well as more satisfied. This effectiveness imperative is not measured in a flurry of programs. It is found in business results" (pp.1-2).

In this context, in Chapter VII, Jac Fitz-enz and Jack Phillips write that "As companies adjust to the new forces of the twenty-first century, HR has to find a basic model for staying in alignment with its customers. In times of great flux and uncertainty, the best approach is usually the simplest and closest to bedrock management. Basically, the human resources function has five responsibilities: planning, staffing, paying, developing and retaining human capital." Thus, in order to reveal interdependence among these functions, they introduce the HR Star model as following:

                  1. Workforce Planning- WFP is making a comeback. No matter what size your organization is, you have to look ahead to your future skills profile. If you devote a reasonable amount of time to planning, you will have it returned in reduced hiring time and cost, lower training costs of new employees, and probably higher productivity through a more stable and motivated workforce.

                  2. Staffing- Hiring during periods of sustained high growth becomes an all-consuming task. The only thing that will make it easier is having good data on the results of your current practices. Doesn't it make sense that if you know how much it costs, how long it takes, and the quality and availability of each of your major sources, you can do a better job?

                  3. Paying- Pay covers wages, salaries and benefits-the total cash investment in human assets. We can do a better job of managing that investment if we look at it from a resource viewpoint.

                  4. Developing- Employee development is no longer an option. Basic skills, management competencies and executive development are all priorities. If we don't develop effective leaders, we won't have to worry about basic skills because we will be out of business.

                  5. Retaining- When the supply is limited, a wise strategy is to pay attention to keeping what you have. Consider what it costs to lose a skilled employee: the direct cost of termination, hiring a replacement, vacancy costs and learning curve loss. These add up to more than one year's pay and benefits for an exempt person. Add to that the external costs in unhappy and lost customers, and the number goes out of sight. One study claims that the cost of losing an effective salesperson can take up to three years to recover.

                  Highly recommended.

This is a journey through the major depression that takes hold of a therapist and professor. In this book, Manning shares her insightful, painfully honest and often humorous journal entries and provides a powerful and personal look at depression. (This is also a great book for anyone who is interested in hearing a positive perspective on ECT.)

                  5 out of 5 stars Well-written, honest and inspiring.......2006-07-13

I bought this book several years ago and have read it about five times by now. This time I read it after suffering through the self-indulgent whining of Elizabeth Wurtzel in Prozac Nation. Reading Undercurrents right afterwards really showed me - once again - the merits of this book. Martha Manning write honestly, she reveals how much she suffers from her depression without ever descending into self-pity. This alone is a remarkable achievement. In addition, she manages to combine the sad passages with some wry humor which is never out of place, but enriches the reading experience. This book is a wonderful and informative account of depression and also helps to shows the background of ECT - while ECT was a horrifying experience for Ms. Manning, she shows how much the treatment helped her. This is a book I highly recommend to anyone suffering from depression or wanting to know more about depression. It is definitely the best first-hand account about this illness that I ever read.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-07

Margaret does an incredible job in this book of truly expressing just how it really feels and the true thoughts of someone who has been depressed for a fairly long period of time. She writes in a way that is true, honest, and humorous.

5 out of 5 stars Crucibles and Grace.......2006-05-07

This is one of the better memoirs of depression yet written because the hellish is brushed with a bit of the kind of humor that makes us wince with awe. Wince with awe? I mean that Doctor Manning is a heroic figure because she is an ordinary figure thrust unwillingly onto the terrain of nightmares.

There are times Doctor Manning almost pleads her own badness and I find that this kind of pleading functions ironically. It destroys the difference between her and the reader just enough to make the reader wonder if HE or SHE is going to make it.

Doctor Martha Manning is intelligent with the sort of haphazard sanity to those who are damned - warriors in the midst of combat, sailors drowning at sea. The conventionality of her spirituality in juxtapostition with the epic nature of her sufferings exalts her and forces her down like a figure in some bad kind of Dante's Comedy where the structure of the universe sees no need to obey the natural law.

Five stars for the formiddably heroic Manning and good luck to her.

4 out of 5 stars Good insight into depression.......2005-01-18

After a friend of mine was diagnosed with depression, I did some research on the disease and this was a book I came across. A funny and poignant book, it gives great insight on what it is like to suffer from depression, and the depths of despair and personal hell one person can reach. Manning is at her best when musing on the lessons that she learned from this particularly devastating depressive episode. A good book for anyone who wonders why people with depression just can't "snap out of it."

                      Book Description

SAILING ON FRIDAY recounts the colorful history of the U.S. merchant fleet in times of war and peace, from 1776 to the present. Twice in U.S. history, the American maritime fleet grew to become one of the most powerful in the world, only to decline thereafter. This is a tale of operatic dimension, people with patriots, politicians, industrial geniuses, fearless seamen, and gallant swashbucklers. Author John A. Butler includes accounts of little-noted innovations that had long-lasting effects, daring ocean rescues, sea battles, and financial gambles that won or lost fortunes. Growing stress among diverse forces of merchants, shipowners, seafarers, and federal agencies brings this exciting story to an appalling climax.

                      But watch out for errors.

The problem with writing history books is that there are a lot of facts to check. I, for one, am harder on books where I discover inaccuracies since for each one I catch who knows how many others get past me, or worse, form my opinion of a subject.

One glaring error I found in the book occurred on page 189:

"The California school [the California Maritime Academy], operating on Treasure Island (man-made in San Francisco Bay for the 1939 World's Fair), was enlarged and relocated to San Mateo."

For starters, the California Maritime Academy operated during the opening days of World War II from the Ferry building at the foot of Market Street in San Francisco. In 1943 it moved to Vallejo, it's location ever since. At no time was it ever located in San Mateo. Since the school remains in Vallejo to this day, this would have been an easy fact to verify. So how do we know the more obscure facts are correct?

This may be nit-picking, since the book was well-written and very informative. Despite some inaccuracies, I'd still recommend it to anyone looking for a good, broad overview of maritime history. (And for anyone looking for further history of the California Maritime Academy, I'd highly recommend Walter Jaffee's The Track of the Golden Bear (The Glencannon Press, 1996).)

John Butler has presented a fascinating, informative, highly readable, and entertaining story of the rise and fall of the American Merchant Marine. While written from the perspective of an insider, the author never talks down to the reader, nor overwhelms the reader with needless detail. He presents the material in a calm and even-handed way, and hold the reader's attention throughout.

                          Book Description

The transformation of Southern politics over the past fifty years has been one of the most significant developments in American political life. The emergence of formidable Republican strength in the previously solid Democratic South has generated a novel and highly competitive national battle for control of Congress. Tracing the slow and difficult rise of Republicans in the South over five decades, Earl and Merle Black tell the remarkable story of political upheaval.

The Rise of Southern Republicans provides a compelling account of growing competitiveness in Southern party politics and elections. Through extraordinary research and analysis, the authors track Southern voters' shifting economic, cultural, and religious loyalties, black/white conflicts and interests during and after federal civil rights intervention, and the struggles and adaptations of congressional candidates and officials.

A newly competitive South, the authors argue, means a newly competitive and revitalized America. The story of how the South became a two-party region is ultimately the story of two-party politics in America at the end of the twentieth century. Earl and Merle Black have written a bible for anyone who wants to understand regional and national congressional politics over the past half-century. Because the South is now at the epicenter of Republican and Democratic strategies to control Congress, The Rise of Southern Republicans is essential to understanding the dynamics of current American politics.

To be honest, I think the Black brothers could have covered the important stuff in about 50-100 pages; instead, they walk you through just about every southern election. They should have developed a few instructive case studies rather than covered everything. But then, if I were so smart, I could have written my own southern politics book.
Anyhoo, the changing political dynamics of the South are incredibly important for understanding the future of our nation. People are going to continue to move down here (I live in Columbia, SC), so the region is only going to become more important over the coming years in presidential elections and national politics. The Blacks' theory on why the South went from strong Democrat to Republican is interesting, but you can easily get the basics from the first and last chapter or so.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent scholarship.......2004-08-03

The Black Bros. did it again: they wrote an excellent book on the history of ALL southern politics, not just republicanism, in a very neutral fashion. This work is a must-have for anybody seriously interested in 20th century American politics.

Black and Black show, in plain-written text and easy-to-read graphs and tables, that the influence of the South on national politics has improved by a vast amount over the last decades. The descriptions of the republican struggle to gain popular attention in the South are exemplified by anecdotes about outstanding republican AND democratic senators and representatives on both the state and the national level.

The authors are right in stating that the past rise of southern republicans can not just be drawn into the near future. Nothing is more unpredictable than politics and voter behavior. However, the Blacks show that the South indeed has won a position in the center of American politics and that southern political trends and events are more important now than ever before.

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for anyone interested in US politics!.......2003-12-15

This book covers extensively the history of the South over the past century. Presidential and congressional elections are explored in detail. I saw an earlier review alluding to the lack of information regarding Hispanics and Asians; however, i found that the Black brothers DO cover this information, while at the same time admitting that the black/white race issue has been one of the most dominant issues in Southern Politics in the 20th century. If, by the end of this book, you have any remaining questions about the South's role in national politics, I suggest reading the other excellent book by the Blacks, "The Vital South." between these two works, just about everything is covered. The Blacks are amazing--especially Merle!

5 out of 5 stars Phillips' Republican Redux.......2003-05-14

This book provides readers a wonderful example of just what political scientists are SUPPOSED to be doing. Certainly, we write for one another, but in terms of books; one must be mindful of the amateur who might read your work. The Black brothers make a wonderful team and deserve much credit for reexamining Kevin Phillips' work in 1968 "The Emerging Republican Majority" however; this reader notes there was a conspicuous absence of Phillips' name in the text. To not mention him A SINGLE time in those 400 plus pages represents a obvious omission which should be brought to their attention.
In any event; the charts and graphs were well presented and the trends appearing were nicely explained. I would comment however that the Blacks might have missed the boat on some important observations that could have been made about Florida and Texas by keeping the race question largely contained to the "black/white" paradigm. Certainly the "shell game" played by the Southern Democrats and their eventual flip to the Republican Party can be largely explained by the 1960s Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts but the demographics have definitely changed in the South and contemporary discussions of race and its impact on partisan politics must do more than allude to hispanics or asians. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a book to explore the trending of the "Solid South" toward the Republican Party this one will definitely 'draw the picture.' I thoroughly enjoyed it and even with the few shortcomings noticed by this political scientist (who wishes SHE could have written this book) their presentation of the data is "on the money!"
I would and DO highly recommend this book to my students and to those curious about the "whos, whens, whys, and hows" of the southern dealignment.
Great Job Blacks.... you have done us proud again!

4 out of 5 stars A Much Needed History Lesson.......2003-01-09

Given the Republican Party's recent reaction to the Trent Lott affair, this book is an excellent retelling of the rise of the GOP in the South and its sordid dabbling in racial politics. Earl and Merle Black are two of the most thoughtful and fair observers of Southern politics, and this is some of their best work yet. Occasionally dry and overly laden with charts, the book can drag in places.

An easy-to-read, highly documented work, Hemp: Lifeline to the Future is the most comprehensive book on the uses, history, and politics of cannabis ever assembled. It looks at detailed industrial applications of cannabis hemp, the medical and nutritional uses of the plants flowers and seeds, and the controversies around marijuana. A scholarly work that captures your attention and holds your interest, this book has been the springboard for many businesses to get up and going in the hemp field, and has inspired countless acts of activism in the cannabis reform movement. A veritable encyclopedia of hemp trivia and historical detail, this book will help you understand why so many people are energized by the promise of hemp. Essential reading for anyone who has ever wondered how past societies were able to survive without modern products, and for anyone who wonders how future generations will be able to survive after the conflagration of the petrochemical era. It dedicates much attention to scientific and sociological studies that shatter the myth of marijuana as the "killer weed," and goes behind the scenes to view the manipulations by which this plant, probably the most versatile and valuable resource on the face of the earth, was demonized and banned under the misnomer "marijuana". Warning: This book might change your life, because once you learn the facts about hemp there is no returning to ignorance. Give a copy to your library, your elected officials, your parents, children, teachers: Anybody who cares about what is wrong with America today. The second edition of the book is 8-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches and over 300 pages, with a title page printed on hemp paper. It is in black and white and illustrated with diagrams to explain the text. The soft bound cover is varnished, with three color illustration. The work includes footnotes throughout, an index and an appendix.

5 out of 5 stars It changed my life.......1999-03-04

A few minutes ago I finished a wonderful and impressive book, Hemp: Lifeline to the Future. It really amazed me, stunned me and enthused me. ... so many emotions went through me ... anger at the vested interests who so cruelly denied so many their rights to employment, health, freedom and enjoyment ... hope for a future with hemp ... amazement at all the positive products that can be made from hemp ... fellowship for all those engaged in changing the system to bring some lightness and brightness to the increasingly stressful and down-in-the-mouth world.

Chris Conrad has my complete and utter admiration for what seems to me to be a superhuman feat of research, communication, compilation and devastating exposition. Amazing. ...

"Thanks" is too small a word, but thanks for giving me the experience of reading your book - finally I have read a book that lives up to that old marketing line, "This book will change your life ...." It really will and it really has.
