The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa (Records of Western Civilization Series)
Otto of Freising , and Charles Christopher Mierow Manufacturer: Columbia University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0231134193 |
Book Description
The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa is the "official biography" of German king and Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. This historical firsthand account was begun by his maternal uncle, Bishop Otto of Freising, the leading medieval church figure and notable historian, and continued by a less well known cleric, Rahewin. This chronicle is the single most important source for the early reign of Frederick Barbarossa and the most valuable biographical study to come out of the twelfth century.
In a letter written to his uncle, Frederick recounted his life and the principal events of his reign. The first of the four books that constitute this account were written by Otto and cover events from 1075 to 1152, from the reign of Henry IV through that of Conrad III. The second book draws heavily on the letter, providing invaluable insight into Frederick's attempts to establish and consolidate the Hohenstaufen empire. The final two books, written by Rahewin, follow the emperor's reign through 1160, during which time Frederick restored order at home, recovered imperial control of Burgundy, and re-created an imperial party in Italy.

The fancy dress party of the century.......2001-12-09
This book gives us a glimpse into a now legendary party. The cream of London society took place in this event - if you weren't invited your were not part of the "in" crowd. This party involved months of planning and the aristocracy of the time spent small fortunes to re-create "authentic" outfits of the characters of their choosing.
This book gives you short, but well written biographies of all the main participants of the ball, what they wore, and where it is available their memoirs of the occasion. The book is also sprinkled with photographs of the participants all dressed for the night. My only complaint is that some of these photos are too small to clearly see the fantastic outfits and jewels the people are wearing.
This book also has a number of rare photos of the interior of Devonshire house before it was demolished, with the furniture intact. Most photos you see of the interior of the house show it stripped of it's fittings and ready for demolition, so these are interesting to see. For a glimpse of late Victorian high society this book is a must, as it contains many bits of information on the ball's participants not available from many other sources.

The Eternal Darkness: A Personal History of Deep-Sea Exploration

Amazon.com
As a young man, at a time when most of his peers were turning their eyes to deep space, Robert Ballard came under the spell both of scientific inquiry and of the ocean. After taking a doctorate in marine geology and geophysics, he spent three decades at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, through which he participated in more than a hundred deep-sea expeditions. Writing from the point of view of "a privileged witness to a fascinating burst of exploration," Ballard recounts many of those explorations, including the first up-close studies of the great mid-ocean ridge of volcanic mountains that circles the globe, full of seafloor vents and "black smokers." Along the way Ballard provides a brief history of modern oceanography, looking at the contributions of such scientists as Charles William Beebe and Otis Barton, whose legendary dives in the early 1930s paved the way for much subsequent research. Ballard's narrative takes on particular vigor when he describes, in fascinating detail, his team's search for the wreckage of the Titanic--a search that relied on intelligent guesswork as much as on hard evidence. The methods he and his colleagues used--employing, among other things, sophisticated remote-control craft--to find the unfortunate vessel ushered in a new era of deep-ocean research, a contribution in which Ballard takes justified pride. --Gregory McNameeBook Description
Until a few decades ago, the ocean depths were almost as mysterious and inaccessible as outer space. Oceans cover two-thirds of the earth's surface with an average depth of more than two miles--yet humans had never ventured more than a few hundred feet below the waves. One of the great scientific and archaeological feats of our time has been finally to cast light on the "eternal darkness" of the deep sea. This is the story of that achievement, told by the man who has done more than any other to make it possible: Robert Ballard.
Ballard discovered the wreck of the Titanic. He led the teams that discovered hydrothermal vents and "black smokers"--cracks in the ocean floor where springs of superheated water support some of the strangest life-forms on the planet. He was a diver on the team that explored the mid-Atlantic ridge for the first time, confirming the theory of plate tectonics. Today, using a nuclear submarine from the U.S. Navy, he's exploring the ancient trade routes of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea for the remains of historic vessels and their cargo. In this book, he combines science, history, spectacular illustrations, and first-hand stories from his own expeditions in a uniquely personal account of how twentieth-century explorers have pushed back the frontiers of technology to take us into the midst of a world we could once only guess at.
Ballard begins in 1930 with William Beebe and Otis Barton, pioneers of the ocean depths who made the world's first deep-sea dives in a cramped steel sphere. He introduces us to Auguste and Jacques Piccard, whose "Bathyscaph"descended in 1960 to the lowest point on the ocean floor. He reviews the celebrated advances made by Jacques Cousteau. He describes his own major discoveries--from sea-floor spreading to black smokers--as well as his technical breakthroughs, including the development of remote-operated underwater vehicles and the revolutionary search techniques that led to the discovery and exploration of the Titanic, the Nazi battleship Bismarck, ancient trading vessels, and other great ships.
Readers will come away with a richer understanding of history, earth science, biology, and marine technology--and a new appreciation for the remarkable men and women who have explored some of the most remote and fascinating places on the planet.

Great Overview.......2007-06-28
Great book..........2007-01-09
Personal history aside, a pretty good book.......2006-01-02
It's Science for the People........2004-01-27
The book is basically a very brief history of deep-sea exploration that is divided into three parts. The first part deals with exploration up until the time of the submersible. There really isn't much about ancient exploration techniques because until the beginning of the 20th century, humankind really wasn't doing any deep-sea exploring. The book talks a lot about bathyscaphs and bathyspheres, things that I only vaguely remember from old Walt Disney cartoons.
The second part of the book explores the discoveries made using submersibles. Ballard began his career near the beginning of the end of this age and it is in this section that he begins discussing many of his own personal voyages and discoveries, including those in the mountain ranges of the oceans.
The third part of the book talks about the events in deep-sea exploring from about the early 1980s on with robotic vehicles doing most of the really deep work. In this part of the book, Ballard discusses other discoveries he was involved with including the Titanic.
Personally, I found the book quite interesting. Ballard does seem to take a lot of credit for various discoveries and events, but he was actually there for the discoveries of those things or at least was a member of the team. This book probably isn't something that an expert in science would want to read (too easy), but it's great for the average Joe. If only all science books were as easy to read as this one.
Balancing the reviews: Another exceptional volume by Ballard.......2003-12-01
As one with longtime personal acquaintance with Ballard's oceanographic work, I advise readers not to place credence in one carping, jealous critic. On the other hand, without Amazon's review system how else could one ever learn of the nuanced, knowledgeable critique of "Time Walker"?
One noteworthy point is that beside his spectacular images and technical breakthroughs, Ballard is ever on the alert to new ideas and concepts. For example, he realized and has popularized the amazing resource that the Black Sea - which has no oxygen through most of its 2000 m depth - offers for finding new insights into ancient cultures. In this environment teredo worms and ordinary bacteria that destroy virtually all wood and metal are absent. The anaerobic bacteria that remain operate exceedingly slowly - offering the chance that even leather and sometimes paper might remain recoverable when wrecks are buried in mud.
Because of the popularity of Ballard's work he has enjoyed support of powerful organizations, from the U.S. Navy to National Geographic. He uses these resources not to enrich himself as many others might do, but primarily to advance further explorations whose costs might otherwise be prohibitive.
So enjoy the visual and the action in Ballard's book, and keep the mind open for the talk, and appreciate one of the large spirits of 20th Century and 21st Century science and exploration.

Fuentes de Oñoro 1811: Wellington's liberation of Portugal (Campaign)
Rene Chartrand Manufacturer: Osprey Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 184176311X Release Date: 2002-02-25 |
Book Description
In October 1810 the Allied position in Portugal appeared precarious. Despite defeating Marshal Masséna's French army at Bussaco, Wellington had been forced to retreat to within a few miles of Lisbon. Here the French encountered a massive line of fortifications stretching from the River Tagus to the sea. Built amid great secrecy and on Wellington's specific orders, these Lines of Torres Vedras were the French high-water mark. In February, with his army on the point of starvation, Masséna was forced to retreat and the scene was set for the climactic action of Fuentes de Oñoro. This book examines this crucial campaign culminating in the hard-fought battle that finally drove the French from Portugal.Customer Reviews:
An Unsatisfying Account.......2002-03-11
Fuentes de Onoro begins in standard Osprey format with a section sketching the origins of the campaign, the opposing plans and a chronology. The section on opposing leaders is far too brief and covers only French corps commanders and senior leaders like Picton and Crauford. Critical French commanders like Montbrun, Mermet, Marchand, Solignac and Ferrey and the British division commanders Spencer and Houston receive virtually no mention. Louis Montbrun, one of Napoleon's best cavalry leaders, deserves more than the single sentence he receives in this account. In particular, Chartrand should have mentioned that Montbrun led the amazing charge at Somosierra in 1808 and had served with distinction in the 1809 campaign in Austria. Information on Spencer, commander of the 1st Division at Fuentes de Onoro, might have been helpful; Spencer was a poor choice to command a critical position on the battlefield. Finally, the portrait of Massena presented here does not do justice to this once great marshal of France. Massena was an old 53 at Fuentes de Onoro while Wellington was 42. Three years before Fuentes de Onoro, Massena lost an eye in a hunting accident when he was accidentally shot by Napoleon (who blamed Berthier), and then fought despite injuries in the slug-fests at Aspern-Essling and Wagram in 1809. Chartrand might have been a bit more sympathetic; Massena needed a rest in 1810-1811, not a mission impossible with inadequate forces.
The section on opposing armies, all 4 ½ pages of it, is totally inadequate. On the other hand, the order of battle provided in the appendix is excellent, with unit strengths provided for all units down to regimental-level. There are five 2-D maps (the Peninsula in 1810, troop movements in November 1810-March 1811, Massena's retreat, armies in the Peninsula in June 1811) and three 3-D "Birds-eye View" maps (the attack of Ferey's Division on 3 May 1811, and two maps of the main battle on 5 May 1811). Three excellent battle scenes are provided: an artillery position in the Lines of Torres Vedras, the charge of Montbrun's cavalry at Fuentes de Onoro and the British counterattack in Fuentes de Onoro). Chartrand provides bibliographical data, including archival sources in Portugal.
The first 37 pages of the campaign narrative cover the Anglo-Portuguese construction of the Lines of Torres Vedras protecting Lisbon, and the French inability to penetrate these defenses. The success of the Lines of Torres Vedras should stand as a shining example for those armchair military strategists who espouse the "futility of fixed defenses" theory. Unfortunately, Chartrand provides very little information on Allied dispositions on the lines or the French probe at Sobral. Only one hard-to-read period map of the lines is provided, instead of a user-friendly modern 2-D map. Plenty of modern pictures of Portuguese scenery is provided but these do not allow a reader to appreciate the strength of these positions. Another aspect revealed in this section is the total failure of French intelligence concerning not only the lines but the terrain in Portugal, which impeded the French invasion.
The actual battle of Fuentes de Onoro is covered in the last 28 pages. The fact that the French were able to surprise Wellington and crush his right flank with well-coordinated infantry and cavalry attacks, driving the British back 3 miles, is given less credit than Wellington's effort to refuse his crumpled flank divisions in order to form a new front. The French pushed back the British in a 2-1 odds attack using columns against lines but that doesn't seem to rate any analysis. There are many questions here but few answers. Why was French artillery so weak in this battle - which should have been addressed in the opposing armies section. Why were the French infantry divisions of Loison's corps unable to continue the attack against Wellington's refused flank? Why was Marshal Bessieres out of command control of his brigade of imperial cavalry at a critical moment in the battle? Why had the British not fortified and barricaded Fuentes de Onoro after the initial French attack on that town two days before the main battle?
The author concludes that Fuentes de Onoro was a British victory since the French threat to Portugal was removed but an incomplete victory, since the Army of Portugal slipped away. Fuentes de Onoro is a difficult battle to evaluate. The French threat to Portugal ended before the battle because Massena had no answer to the Torres Vedras lines, so it is misleading to attribute strategic results to a battle that was close to a tactical draw. On the battlefield itself, the French failed to relieve the siege of Alameida or to cripple Wellington's army - which was Massena's immediate objectives - or even to seize Fuentes de Onoro. On the other hand, by turning and attacking, Massena did help restore morale in a French army that had only seen retreat and frustration for months. The ability of the French to mass cavalry and infantry columns probably impressed Wellington enough that the French were still dangerous opponents and view as a spoiling attack, Fuentes de Onoro probably helped to delay Wellington's invasion of Spain until 1812.

Book Description
In the winter of 1809-10 Viscount Wellington, confronted by the prospect of facing formidable French forces in Spain without the aid of his Spanish allies, the construction of the massive defensive lines of Torres Vedras north of Lisbon. They consisted of a formidable three-line system of field earthworks and fortifications which stretched for some 30 miles from the coast to the river Tagus. Marshal Massena had been completely unaware of the existence of this massive line of defenses until he found himself confronted by them. Unable to find the key to unlock Wellington's fortifications, running out of food and with winter approaching Massena was faced with the prospect of watching his army starve where it stood. He had no choice but to withdraw into Spain. After a bitter winter of frontier skirmishing the French again took the offensive. Soult moved to Badjoz and Massena advanced to relieve Almeida which Wellington had invested. At Fuentes de Onoro Massena and Wellington's armies clashed in a hard fought contest. Wellington lost 1,800 men, Massna 2,700 but the French failed to break Wellington's siege and were forced to withdraw. Massena was relieved of his command in disgrace to be relieved by Marshal Marmont.

Cultures of Politics Politics of Cultures : Re-Visioning Latin American Social Movements
Sonia E. Alvarez Manufacturer: Westview Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0813330726 |
Book Description
Investigating the complex interrelations between culture and politics in a wide range of social movements in Latin America, this book focuses on the cultural politics enacted by social movements as they struggle for new visions and practices of citizenship, democracy, social relations, and development. The volume explores the potential of these cultural politics for fostering alternative political cultures and social transformations. Theoretical and empirical chapters assess and build upon novel conceptions of culture and politics in a variety of disciplines and fields-particularly anthropology, political science, sociology, feminist theory, and cultural studies. The notion of the cultural politics of social movements provides a lens for analyzing emergent discourses and practices grounded in society and culture, the state and political institutions, and the extent to which they may unsettle, or be reinscribed into, the dominant neoliberal strategies of the 1990s. Contributors explore how social movements-urban popular, women's, indigenous, and black movements as well as movements for citizenship and democracy-engage in the cultural resignification of notions such as rights, equality, and difference, thus altering what counts as political. By highlighting simultaneously the cultural dimensions of the political and the political dimensions of the cultural, the book transcends the distinction between "new" and "old" social movements and thus significantly renews our understanding of them.Customer Reviews:
