3 out of 5 stars Bland!.......2006-06-17

I bought an unabridged recording from Audible and listened to this book while driving. The son was a very pale copy of the father. He kept telling what a nice guy he was, but his mean streak came through, particularly in the episode when he smeared an egg on his young son's face to teach him 'values'. This was an OK listen while stuck in traffic but I would have tossed the book aside in favor of something more alive if I weren't in the car.

            Book Description

Al McGuire was the Mark Twain of college basketball. Never was there a figure in the game so quoted and so quotable, on sports and on the human condition. This book collects more than a hundred of McGuire's most colorful quotations, plus photographs from his life and career, in a tribute that is funny, poignant, and brimming with his streetwise sagacity.

McGuire, a brash and fiery New Yorker who grew up working in his parents' saloon, played a rough and tumble game of basketball at St. John's University and briefly in the NBA before entering the coaching ranks. He reached the pinnacle of his profession and gained national fame at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where in thirteen seasons he compiled a 295-80 record, appeared in nine NCAA tournaments, and won eighty-one home games in a row. He was a fine coach who cared deeply about his players and was beloved by his teams and fans alike, but his flamboyance and his mouth sometimes got him into trouble. The end of his coaching career captivated the nation: McGuire wept on the bench as his Marquette Warriors won the national title.

McGuire then began a ground-breaking career in network broadcasting, adding a zest and unconventionality that the college game had never seen. His sometimes bizarre and always entertaining commentary kept viewers tuned in even after the outcome of a lopsided game was a foregone conclusion. When Al McGuire died of leukemia in 2001, the sports world lost a true original.

4 out of 5 stars Cracked Sidewalks and French Pastry.......2005-08-02

I purchased this book on Al McGuire as a gift for my father's 71st birthday. As a former basketball coach, he had been a strong admirerer of one of the most unique individuals in sports. Both me and my father highly recommend this for lovers of college basketball, especially for those who tend to march to the beat of a different drummer. I'm sure that even though Al McGuire is no longer with us he will be remembered whenever some young person is making the sign of the cross on his/her forehead before shooting a critical freethrow with his immortal statement that the "Nuns are Working the Beads."

4 out of 5 stars An unusual coffee table-type book.......2003-11-30

This is a strange coffee table-type book. Author Kertscher apparently did not know Al McGuire personally, and this book is the product of a posthumous project of collecting McGuire-related photographs and quotes. Yet despite the lack of direct personal connection, the book does a good job of communicating the odd combination of street-level wisdom, humanity, and whimsy that made McGuire such an intriguing and compelling character to a generation of basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike.

            5 out of 5 stars AL.......2003-08-06

Al McGuire has been truly captured through this book. The photos and quotes truly capture the man, the charachter, and the coach that was AL. Anyone who grew up around the legend, understood what he meant to the game, but I don't believe anyone has a true grasp until they have turned the pages of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Cracked sidewalks and french pastry.......2002-12-16

Tom Kertscher has done an excellent job in introducing me to Al McGuire. I've never followed college basketball so I wasn't familiar with coach McGuire. However after reading the book I can see why so many people thought so highly of him. I very much enjoyed getting to know the coach from his many quotes and photos over the course of his career. He's one of those colorful figures in life that adds that missing ingredient making the ordinary, something rich and flavorful.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Gift.......2002-11-24

I don't know basketball, and I'm sure that my elevator doesn't go to the top, but I know a wonderful remembrance when I see one. Kertscher illustrates the humanity of McGuire - humorous and touching. The phrases from the glossary have become a shared language between myself and my son.

5 out of 5 stars Basics of Winning Craps.......2006-01-23

If you've never played before, this is the book you've got to read. It's easy, basic and makes you feel like a pro on the table. I read it, won, and lost, but that's the game. I think this book is so great that I am purchasing it for friends who "would love to play but just don't understand the game." This book makes it easy, you've got to try it.

5 out of 5 stars Read it. Played it. Won........2005-09-27

I had no idea how to play casino craps until I read this book. All bets on the craps table were explained as well as the house's edge on each. Best bets to play and betting strategies were given in clear and easy to understand way. Money management also covered.

I used the methods and knowledge to win big in Vegas and on cruise ship. Now craps is all I play. I have won on two week-long gambling vacations out of two week-long gambling vacations. Planning next junket now.

                    4 out of 5 stars Informative book.......2001-11-05

(...) I have been playing craps for about 6 mo's and like most, knew the simple typical bets but was confused about the more "exotic" ones. This book clearly defines all the bets on the table. As far as how to play, well the book tells you the odds of each bet and what percentage of the time each number on the dice rolls. You should be able to determine the style you want to play from these numbers. There are many craps books out there that tell you how the authors' play, but are lacking in the specifics of some of the game's details if those details don't pertain to their way of playing the game. This book provides all the rules. Its short and concise. I recommend it if you want to know the specifics of each possible bet on the craps table. If you want to know how someone else plays and want to do nothing more than copy their methods of play, I would suggest a different book.

1 out of 5 stars If you buy this you craped out!.......1997-08-31

Don't waste your money on this book. Even as a primer on the game of craps it falls way short. Most of the information contained is in the free gaming brochures that the casinos hand out. The real rip here is that in the last chapter Allen is hustleing an expensive "system" that you have to order seperatly. Look for other books on craps that go into detail about money management and winning strategy

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the BEGINNER SALES GUY! (or girl!).......2006-12-10

I have absolutely NO sales experience. None, zilch, zero.

I studied medicine since the age of 18 and eventually received my Medical Assistant, EMT, LVN and Paramedic Licenses. I then studied more, continued to grad school and received my Masters Degree in Chinese Medicine.

How does this relate to me now? Folks, don't fool yourself. It does not matter what you have studied or what degree you received. 99% of us need to "sell" ourselves. Yes, even doctors and lawyers! Having a "niche" is important, but you still need to know about SALES in general.

I wondered why many doctors simply "drop their prices" while others charged double and sometimes TRIPLE than others. Was the technique different? Not hardly. It was the presentation, communication, the value and confidence.

Thank you Tom for this book, you have made a difference!

The days of the sterotypical "salesman" is over. No more pink pants, gift of gab, talking and not shutting up is over. I talk less, listen more and am simply amazed over and over of my results.

Don't "talk yourself" OUT OF A SALE!

Read this book, its worth it!

4 out of 5 stars The best Sales book I have read.......2004-04-11

I think that of all the sales books I have read, this is the best. It is more powerful than Hopkin's "How to master the Art of Selling" and also more concise. I think that the advice in this book can actually be put to use by people dealing with well educated consumers, it won't double your sales, but it will stimulate imporvement, I recommend it if you are in a sales career, or thinking about it.

I use and have shared with other salespeople the qualifying system that he outlines in this book and found it to very effective in getting the imformation needed to move the customer toward owning my product.

The author is an astute student of the language of selling and has some good closing techniques that help refocus the customer on making the decision to buy. In short, I have made money and helped my customers make good decisions using the techniques I learned from this book. It is worth your time to read.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful Update of "How to Master the Art of Selling".......2000-10-06

Tom Hopkins's book, How to Master the Art of Selling, is the Bible for many sales people. In that book, he outlines the 7 steps for selling: prospecting, originating contact, qualification, presentation or demonstration, handling objections, closing, and getting referrals.

In Low Profile Selling, he builds on that book by focusing attention on the 4 areas that make the most positive difference in creating a higher income (originating contact, qualification, handling objections, and closing). His message is that the emotional tone you set in these four areas makes all of the difference. "Act like a lamb. Sell like a lion."

These observations are based on the distaste that many customers have for the usual strong-arm tactics that many salespeople use. Mr. Hopkins encourages you to use questions to do your work for you, and provides many scripts and examples of how to do this. Although I think he is on the right track conceptually, I found the material here clearly inferior to the newer book, Socratic Selling, both in terms of explaining the need for questions and in the tone of the scripts. I found the material here to still feel manipulative to me as a potential customer.

In chapter three, he encourages you to build rapport. Again, this is the right concept, but the execution is clearly inferior again to any of the many good books on Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Consider "How To Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less" as a much better resource in this area.

I graded the book down two stars for its obvious weaknesses in explaining the details in these two critical areas. Basically, I think Mr. Hopkins needs to update this book to expand and improve these two sections.

Should you read this book? Yes, I think so. It will give you a good overview on the importance of connecting emotionally with the other person. Chapter 6 is excellent on the importance of the words you use to make the person you are talking to comfortable or uncomfortable. The goal setting work in chapter 10 will also be very helpful to you (although it would have worked better at the beginning of the book). I do suggest that you also read his earlier book and the two new ones I cited above that he did not write if you want to make the most improvement.

After you have finished reading and applying the four books discussed above, I suggest that you also spend some time sharing these principles with someone you care about who is also involved in sales. You will improve much more by teaching this material to someone else than by just focusing on applying it yourself.

                      Exceed all your goals quickly!

Nobody, but nobody, understands the nuts and bolts of selling like Tom. If I were stranded in middle America trying to make a living in sales with only one book in my car this is the one! A must read for any new sales person or a great refresher for any vet!

                              Book Description

Jeffrey Archers final volume in his trilogy of prison diaries covers the period of his transfer from a medium security prison, HMP Wayland, to his eventual release on parole in July 2003. It includes a shocking account of the traumatic time he spent in the notorious Lincoln jail and the events that led to his incarceration there, and also shines a harsh light on a system that is close to its breaking point. Told with humor, compassion and honesty, the diary closes with a thought-provoking manifesto that should be applauded by reform advocates and the prison population alike.

                              5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Insight into Britain's D-Category Prisons.......2006-08-23

I haven't actually read Archer's first two prison diaries yet but have ordered them after stumbling across this fascinating insight into daily prison life. Volume III Heaven can definitely be read as a stand alone non fiction novel or before reading the other two as it doesn't really refer to anything before Archer's arrival at North Sea Camp. Arhcer's final stage of imprisonment is in one of Britain's cushy D-category prisons, the final chapter of prisoners' lives before they are released, where there are no fences keeping prisoners in, and they have a lot more freedom and luxuries than ever before.

Archer tells the reader through his diary entries about the difference in the way he is treated at North Sea Camp in comparison to the places he was held previously. How he is being picked on by corrupt political opponents, how the media who are camped out on the doorstep for a photo of him is portraying a completely different scenario to what he endures daily. The drug problems of other prisoners and how the system works or doesn't for prisoners in North Sea Camp. Archer explains the different jobs within the prison and takes us through the daily tasks of his various job promotions including the one he refers to as heaven, hospital orderly. There are also a few pictures included in what is a fascinating insight into prison life. Obviously it is a diary by Archer so we have to assume he was well behaved inside or if he did anything wrong he certainly didn't include it. There are plenty of despicable or stupid actions from some other prisoners and the outcomes of those actions inside to keep the reader entertained though.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The Three Diaries.......2006-08-09

This is the final volume of three volumes about Jeffrey Archer's Prison experience following his conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice in 2001.

Archer gives the reader an excellent picture of what it is like to be in prison in the United Kingdom. He writes pithy descriptions of some of his colleagues, including two of them who were model prisoners only to reoffend shortly after they were released. His comments on the drug problem in prisons are almost certainly applicable to prisons here in the United States as well.

This book is easy to read, hard to put down, and does not waste words or descriptions. There is also plenty of Archer's good humor. He expresses his unhappiness at the people who turned on him and testified against him, but does not indulge in self-pity. This book is well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars worth it if you read the first two.......2006-02-23

This makes more sense if you read the first two prior books. Interesting and well written and an easy read, come to mind when describing the book. It is what it is - an on going diary of prison time. The tone of the book gets a bit darker as the reins are tightned and he is forced back into a more secure population. His depression is evident as he eventually trails off in his writing and picks it up the day of his discharge. None of the books were gritty in the sense of true prison drama, but it is an interesting prospective.

It is almost comical in some aspects as I have worked in the prison system. He is gleeful at the prospect of getting his very own coffee cup when most men spend their days trying not to get stabbed. He rails at people called Lady this or Lord that and loves to name drop. It's difficult to imagine that in a prison system and therefore the unsual prospective. Interesting.

4 out of 5 stars The conclusion, very good, though a little repetitive.......2005-09-18

The final book of Archers tales in the Prison System.

I read this in 1 day... just wanted to get through it and again could not put the book down. A lot of the material and experience is the same as book 1 and 2. Though now in a Cat D prison (an open prison) he has more freedom, it does still show the drugs and money.

And of course, the press continue to try and get the scoop on him, paying other inmates to get "archer with his clothes off"

All in all, a good book. I am glad he did not do a 4th.

If you read book 1 and 2, get this to wrap up the set.

                                  Book Description

Since the end of the Cold War, the U.S. military has found itself embroiled in many "operations other than war." Most controversial of these have been humanitarian interventions, which often lacked a clear majority of either elite or public support. Although the immediate threat represented by the events of September 11, 2001, has coalesced public opinion behind the Bush administration's antiterrorism campaign, it is likely that the debate over humanitarian interventions will again take center stage in the coming years. In this book, political scientist Robert C. DiPrizio examines representative case studies from the recent past to offers insight into how a sitting president might (or should) respond to such future emergencies.

DiPrizio examines the factors that lay behind U.S. decisions to send troops into civil conflicts abroad, analyzing both the decision-making process and the domestic and international constraints placed upon them. Focusing on the administrations of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, he shows that the president remains the chief player in such decision making, and through six case studies--northern Iraq, Somalia, Rwanda, Haiti, Bosnia, and Kosovo--he looks in detail at both positive and negative intervention decisions. DiPrizio finds that in each of these cases, motivating factors included a different mix of "soft" security concerns (such as refugee flows, regional stability, alliance credibility, and interalliance tensions), true humanitarian concerns, and domestic politics. DiPrizio concludes with a discussion of the possible impact of America's ongoing antiterrorism campaign on the current Bush administration's policy on humanitarian interventions.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting collection of essays about the Italo-Ethiopian War.......2007-05-17

Be careful with this book: I bought it for use in a history essay, expecting it to be a single work. Instead, Alberto Sbacchi, the noted Italian scholar and critic of imperialism, who is listed as the author, compiled a series of essays ranging from the 1970s to the present about the history of Italy in Ethiopia. There is a special concentration on Italian generals' use of poison gas against the Ethiopians, which is a little-adressed subject. Essentially, it is useful as a general reference, but be aware of bias and don't depend on it as a serious piece of historography.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Brief Review.......2004-11-22

Extremely interesting and fascinating book. This book would be even more interesting if juxtaposed with the later struggles between Ethiopia and the emerging state of Eritrea. Italy's actions (and later Britain and the UN) in this region of Northeast Africa reverberates until today with the Ethiopian-Eritrean border 1998-2000 War. I'd like to make one point about the atrocities committed against the Ehiopians by the Italians. Although the Italians did terrible acts of murder, rape, and genocide against the Ehiopians, their actions and appetite for murder, rape, and genocide were surpassed by the Ethiopians, who in later years committed even more terrible atrocities against the Eritreans(in their struggle for independence). Of course, actions taken by Haile Selassie later on in his regime, and Menginstu Haile Mariam led to millions of Ethiopians starving to death. So, what is my point? Well, I guess that the actions of the Italians should not be made ominous at that time in history because they are "Italians" or "whites". What the Italians did is what they did, and the Ethiopians, later, did far more terrible things to the Eritreans and to themselves.

4 out of 5 stars A crucial point in European history, a nation sacrificed.......2004-07-08

In my opinion, the Italian invasion and conquest of Ethiopia is a war that has not received enough emphasis. While the Italians were victorious after a fashion and King Victor Emanuel III of Italy was now considered an Emperor, the consequences for Europe and the world were enormous. Before the war, Italy was a significant power in Europe and while not specifically anti-German, Mussolini was opposed to any territorial realignment in Europe that did not involve Italy gaining territory. At that time, even though they possessed similar ideologies, Italy and Germany were still at odds. It seems to be forgotten now that it was Mussolini's forceful military response that prevented the German Anschluss with Austria from taking place in 1934. Until the Italian adventure in Ethiopia, it was Italian military power that was checking the southern expansion of the German Reich. Mussolini openly described Hitler as a "little clown" and he entered into agreements with the smaller nations, where he pledged to defend them against German expansion. Germany and Italy were also natural territorial rivals, as Mussolini clearly understood that a German seizure of Austria would reopen the Tyrol issue. An alliance between Britain, France and Italy standing against German expansion would have kept it from happening. If those three had aligned against Germany, it would have been fighting on three fronts, a southern, western and on the seas.
However, Britain and France tried to play both sides of the fence during the war between Italy and Ethiopia. In the guise of collective security, they tried to punish Italy, imposing rather weak sanctions. At the same time, they were reaching an accommodation with Mussolini, awarding him de facto recognition of the conquest, although they were not to the point where they were willing to make it de jure. The policy of trying to punish a nation while simultaneously attempting to form a stronger alliance with it projected weakness.
As this was happening, Hitler did not join the sanctions, supplying Italy with essential materials, which led to an understanding between Hitler and Mussolini. Germany would acquiesce in the Italian conquest of Ethiopia, and then Italy would do the same when Germany tried to annex Austria. The cost of carrying out a colonial war so far away from the home country served to weaken Italy, making it far less formidable in the power structure of Europe. It was at this point that the British and French decided that there was no point in making any additional concessions in an attempt to draw Italy into an anti-German alliance.
All of the above is covered in detail in this book, but there is also a great deal of attention paid to the actions of the Italians in Ethiopia. That war was the last one where poison gas was extensively used. Even though it had been banned as a weapon, the Italians made effective use of several different types, a fact well known to the European powers. In their focus on trying to keep Italy an ally, a great deal of effort was made to cover it up. There is little doubt that the fact that those being asphyxiated were Africans had something to do with this effort. Another point brought out, something that I have never read in any other book, was the Italian policy of execution as a means of controlling the country. In several instances, they lured Ethiopian leaders by promises of safety, only to have them killed.
At the end of the war, Italy emerged weak, estranged from her natural ally of Great Britain and somewhat reliant on the rising power of Germany. Britain and France tried to sacrifice Ethiopia for security in Europe. It did not work, although in their defense, there was little public support for any forceful action of any kind. I enjoyed this book; it should be read and studied as a chronicle of one of the prelude events to the Second World War.

4 out of 5 stars Has good information with lots of filler.......2001-06-21

I bought this book because I was writing a research paper on the Italo-Ethiopian War, and seeing as this humongous volume was written all about it, I was thrilled.. and I wasn't disappointed. It has lots of information about the war and was a great help in helping me narrow down my topic; it also covers background to the war, etc. However, I only found about half of the book at all relevant to what I was trying to find. Nevertheless, this fault does not affect the usefulness of the book, except that it just makes it a whole lot heavier. Not my choice for a light afternoon read, but very good for research.

4 out of 5 stars One Crucial Point of Bitterness Omitted.......2000-10-09

The author presented how the mighty European powers sacrificed Ethiopian independence in a clear and unambigous manner. All the relevant facts and supporting documents were apppropriate.

But I am NOT sure why, Mr. Sbacchi failed to mention that The Pope's tacit support of the camapaign. In fact to set an example,he donated the Papal ring to help finace the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. This act by the Pope infuriated a number of Eritreans, who then not only converted to The Ethiopian Orhtodox faith in protest, but also deserted Italy, and joined the Ethiopian patriots. The Pope's act left one of more Legacy of bitterness, since most thought that a Christian can not be cruel to another Christian. And they found out that European Christians are never meant to be equal with African Christians. Overall, it is a comendable work and I hope to see more like it.

                                    Book Description

Exxon and Valdez have become the sine qua non for the mishandling of both an environmental disaster response and the corporate communications surrounding it. No environmental disaster in the twentieth century captivated the world's attention to the extent of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in March 1989. It certainly captivated the attention of public relations practitioners and corporate communicators, triggering exhaustive new crisis planning and crisis preparation efforts in many organizations. Yet, top business management often use the Exxon spill as a key platform for raising questions about the need for crisis planning beyond that necessary to operationally manage a problem.

Even now, years later, many members of corporate senior management remain at odds with public relations practitioners over lessons to be learned from the incident. This monograph explores the powerful lessons this paradox teaches.
