good book!.......2006-01-19
this is the first book i've read about the royal family. i do trust everything this housekeeper says in the book. she seems very trustworthy and gets into VERY specific details (gossip!) is it wrong for her to have written this book? probably, but who cares?! you get to see the true sides of charles and diana's personalities, from how they treat their help, to how they treat their kids and each other. i read through the whole book with interest, so i must give it a good rating.

The book is written by the woman who worked as housekeeper to Prince Charles and Princess Diana for eight years. Much is made of the fact that it was "banned in Britain" - because the writer breached the confidentiality agreement she signed when she took the job, and would have had to give up the income from it had it been published in the UK. This sums up the book. It's a tattletale book, a dreadful breach of confidence on her part, and heavy on judgement about the royals and their lifestyle. In view of this, I find that I cannot take what Berry says on trust - she's a judgmental gossip and as such not about to write a truth and nothing but the truth book. If you want to read gossip, you will enjoy this book. It's not very well written, the grammar is poor, and Berry is not a good writer. She jumps around in time with her anecdotes, which are based only on what she saw as housekeeper, in one place where the royals lived. Since she was not with them when they were working, she does not describe the work involved, and makes no allowances for how exhausting it must have been, nor can she imagine this. She is critical of Princess Diana, and delighted to pass on others' criticism, while having no insight into what made the Princess what she was. It's a poor, shabby book.
Slight, amusing and more than a little pretentious.......2003-11-19
It's a fun read, no doubt about it. Being a Midwestern girl, I'll never know what it's like to be a royal and I found this insider's view fascinating. To be fabulously wealthy, yet get all manner of freebies and presents. To have a staff there ready to wait on you, yet to never be away from their judgemental eyes. What a life! No wonder both Charles and Diana were spoiled and far from perfect. I don't see how anyone could be remotely normal given the lives they led. For this peek into Highgrove, I was grateful. However, Ms. Berry herself seems rather unlikeable. Always gossiping, making sure we know that's she's more educated that the Prince and Princess realized, saying that Diana never would have "dared" lose her famous temper with the housekeeper, it kept me shaking my head. Like other, I'm sure, I suspect if she didn't take this job in the first place just to pen a tell-all.
Nothing New.......2003-09-07
I got this book from Ebay as it was out of print. And Banned
in London. It was a good book all in all. But, I learned nothing
really new. We all know that Diana had alot of problems
I guess I would as well if I lived with the Royals. Not an
easy family to live with. She did her job and won the hearts
of many people. She is still a hero in my heart. Hey, she was
a person before she was royal.
An insider's story.......2002-02-21
I bought this book several years ago and have just re-read it.
It's an interesting look at life inside the Royal Family. Well, at least one part of it. The self-centeredness of Prince Charles is not surprising. He expects every whim to be catered to without question and immediately. He comes across as very spoiled and out of touch.
Princess Diana is another matter. Her instability is so apparent. It is too bad that she did not get professional help.
The last sentence, "But where is it all going to end?" is sad when you think about what happened to Diana.
The author doesn't take sides, but has given us a good look into the private lives of a very unhappy family.

As a part of the Racing Superstar Series, this book take you down victory lane or pit row with one a the true giants in the world of auto racing. Follow along in Jeff Gordon's career to the beginnings and to the rise to superstar.
The book is less than hundred pages and makes quick reading. The author gives you a good look into the life of Jeff Gordon and his triumphs and failures. Overall this book is very good and makes a great gift for the auto-racing fan in your life.

A Very Disappointed Book.......2007-09-12
I'm afraid that I've to say that it is a terrible book on both FedEx and Innovation. The book talks a very little about FebEX in terms of its story and its business innovation, although in the name of FedEX Delivers. And it is very shallow and unsystemic, actually no (much) value, in learning of management and of innovation.
It is almost waste of time!

I was very disappointed in this book on Fed Ex. This is a great management theory book but really told me nothing about how Fed Ex is innovating again and again. I am hoping that someone will come out and tell us how Fed Ex as a company is succeeding but it is not this book. For those interested in academic management you will find this interesting otherwise don't waste your time and money.

There are lots and lots of useful management ideas in this book. Fed Ex seems to know how a business should run and how to treat its customers and its employees. If you have a business with employees or are contemplating starting one this book would be good to have around. It will help you to grow your business by incorporating the help of others whith their views which may be different from your own.

a facinating read.......2007-09-13
well researched, beautifully written true story of a huge storm and the swordfishing boat that didn't make it through. Shows you the dangerous job of fishing, explains how many ways the sea can sink a ship, and gives you a feeling of what it means to drown. I found it all interesting, especially learning about waves and the details of the rescue swimmers and their incredible training. Dense with details but gripping and ultimately frightening. Gives you new respect for the ocean and the rogue waves that are out there.
A Masterpiece.......2007-08-13
This book was extremely well researched and very detailed and descriptive...I couldn't put it down, and quite frankly learned so many things from it that I was not aware of regarding the risks taken every day by commercial fisherman everywhere, nautical terms, all about charts, weather tracking and patterns, rescue protocall...just sooo many new things. If you are looking for a romanticised version such as the movie portrays, this is not it....this is the hardcore truth that places it in a non fictionary way. No overblown speculated plot, no bull (don't get me wrong, I adore the movie too!) ...just the truth and actual accounts given by all the writers sources...the 'real' words from the 'real' folks that actually lived through this devistating storm of the century. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was quite sad when it was done. It left me wanting to know more about these hearty, brave and strong people. They look death in the face everyday without fear, never knowing if they will return to port or not, while those who love them wait on shore never knowing if that goodbye exchanged at the dockside may have been the last time they would ever see them. For those who like a good read with all the technical terms in place to better explain, you will love this book.
The Not So Perfect Storm.......2007-06-14
*I recently got this book while on vacation to have for a good summer read. While not completely disappointed, I would have to say I am not at all a fan of this book either. A mistake I made was that I saw the movie before I read the book and while reading it felt unaffected by what I read due to the over the top action and tear jerking in the movie. I expected the same in the book and just didn't get it. Also, while interested in fishing and the ocean in general this book failed to keep my attention. The random explanations of weather patterns and useless historic journal writings of seventeenth and eighteenth century ship captains and seamen interrupted the story for me. I felt that the only times the book got good was when the author told the story about the men on the Andrea Gale, which was limited and rare. Of course, the writing is speculative and journalistic but there wasn't much other than that that really stuck with what I thought the book was about. There was no in-depth biography of the six seamen lost (who really am I reading about), the story jumped around too much from weather to a fish boat captain in Florida to one in Massachusetts, back to weather and a little smidgen of the Andrea Gale thrown in and then back to the 1800s, it was also just too technically exhausting, no pictures of the seamen and/or the Andrea Gale and once I began understanding what was being said about storms and currents Junger either ended the chapter or jumped to something else to discuss. I really wanted this book to be good and I did begin reading it with an open mind, however by somewhere in the middle it lost me and I felt the potential for something great had sunk. Maybe if it had been written by someone else it could have been more but unfortunately for me it wasn't. For an example of how the story of the Andrea Gale and the six seamen who went down with her should and could have been told, while not along the same subject but still telling a story it has to tell like it should, check out Richard G. Fernicola's Twelve Days of Terror.

gripping, harrowing true story.........2007-04-04
this is one of the most gripping, involving books I've ever read...Sebastian Junger writes with the details and accuracy of an investigative journalist and the excitement and anticipation of a great mystery writer..highly recommmended..one of my favorite books of all-time.
I've changed my mind..........2007-02-28
...when I reviewed the film, I said I'd never go to sea in anything smaller than a "Nimitz"-class carrier, or alternatively a submarine. Now I've read the book, forget the carrier, submarine only, I want something that goes under all THAT weather.
To me, book and film complement each other very nicely. The book lacks the excitement of the film, but explains much that the film cannot (the backgrounds of the characters, the nature of storms, some varied history of fishing, previous storms, etc., and even the physiology of drowning). The film, on the other hand, puts a face (imaginary) on the crew of the "Andrea Gail" and what happened to them in a way that the book can't. Some aspects of the various attempted rescues depicted in the book are changed in the film, but not in a way that in any way diminishes the skill and heroism of the Coastguard and Air National Guard personnel who put their necks on the line in unbelievable conditions to save mariners in distress. If anything, they are the co-stars of both book and film, along with the storm itself.
The book is slow to get going and is written in the present tense, which I find irritating, but once it gets rolling, it gets you in. If you've seen the film and enjoyed it, your experience is not complete until you've read the book.

This engaging and often witty work asks the basic question, "how do rituals and symbols that are widely understood to be false or absurd help to support a regime?" Her answers help to complicate our understanding of the relationship between state symbolism and legitimacy in authoritarian states.
Happily, the value of this work is not limited to political theory. Indeed, for most readers, these theoretical issues will be secondary to the insights and observations Wedeen offers regarding the workings of the brutal and repressive Syrian regime. Her authorial tone is wry and, despite its theoretical sophistication, this is an easy work to read. In particular, her reliance on everyday communications and popular media and the breadth of examples she provides bring Syrian society to life in a way that few academic works have.
Analysis of Syria's pseudo-cult of personality.......2004-03-24
When I first traveled to Syria in the late 90's, I found the eerie, creepy phenomenon of what Wedeen terms Syria's state cult to be the most inscrutable, absurd and mind-boggling feature of the entire land-scape. After Asad's death, the succession of his son, Bashar, saw the ubiquity of his father's visage decline noticeably but still it did by no means disappear.
Wedeen's work does forcefully and with keen insight what I once thought was impossible. Though known to be patently absurd by all Syrians, inside and outside the elite, Wedeen argues cogently that this cult in its own way reinforces power for the state by demarcating the boundaries of political practice 'as if'...i.e., politics in Syria are to be practiced AS IF the cult expresses reality. Her analysis also broadens to include investigations of the vast amount of state resources squandered on the cult and the circumscribed efforts to resist and protest the gov't. Highly recommended reading for anyone studying the modern Middle East.
Brilliant.......1999-10-28
One of the best studies I have ever read on the nature of power and domination. Wedeen asks the simple question of how Asad is able to keep power in Syria when all of the people know that all of the state propaganda is false. Her elegant answer gets right to the heart of what makes a ruler powerful. Asad rules not through totalitarianism, but through authoritarianism. What's the difference? A ruler who controls everything that the people think (like in North Korea) is not really dominating them, they just don't know any better. But a ruler like Asad rules because the people fear him and become unable to dissent as a result of Foucault-ian discursive practices.
This book will facinate anyone interested in the modern Middle East or the nature of power.

A ground-breaking exploration of the subtle ways power operates to structure everyday life. Rich in ethnographic detail and eloquently written. Definitely worth _much_ more than $17. A worthy read, not just for people interested in contemporary Middle Eastern politics, but for those interested in issues of power, discipline and resistance. Ms. Wedeen is a rising star in the field of Political Science. Bravo!!
