    Book Description

The first biography of the most successful and controversial horse trainer of all time

His methods have been ridiculed, his business tactics declared questionable, and his plans derided. Yet, not even the most stiff-necked Southern patrician can deny that D. Wayne Lukas is the most successful horse trainer in history. In 1999, Lukas became the first trainer to surpass $200 million in earnings. He has won 12 Triple Crown events (including 6 in a row)13 Breeders' Cups, 4 Kentucky Derbies, 5 Preaknesses, and 3 Belmonts. If horse racing is the sport of kings, then D. Wayne Lukas is surely its emperor. Now, in D. Wayne--the first book-length biography of D. Wayne Lukas--sportswriter Carlo DeVito tells the riveting life story of the man known throughout the sports world as the "Vince Lombardi of horse racing."

He reveals the unorthodox business tactics D. Wayne used to wrest control of thoroughbred racing away from the handful of wealthy families who had held it for two centuries and to change the business forever. And with the help of candid interviews with Lukas rivals and fans, colleagues and competitors, and others, Carlo DeVito paints a fascinating portrait of the man who embodies Americans' most cherished images of themselves--self-made man, innovator, and cowboy.

The first biography of the most successful--and controversial--horse trainer of all time

    D. Wayne Lukas has trained more winners, won more races, and amassed a greater fortune than any horse trainer in history. His unorthodox methods as well as his stormy personal life have also earned him a celebrity traditionally reserved for movie stars and big-league athletes. Now, in D. Wayne, journalist Carlo DeVito provides us with an intimate look into the life, times, and complex personality of one of the most colorful entrepreneurial mavericks of all time.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars D.Wayne: The High-Rolling and fast times of America's Premier Horse Trainer.......2006-04-13

A great read, not just for the racing enthusiast, but anyone who loves sports. D.Wayne Lukas wasn't just a horse trainer, he was a motivator as well, and this book highlights his success with horses and people.

    1 out of 5 stars Outran--Absolute Glue.......2002-06-22

A true shame. What purports to be a definitive biography is mostly a paraphrase of several articles and passages from other books.
No trainer in this lifetime influenced the Sport of Kings more than D. Wayne Lukas. His story deserves the treatment of a quality writer and editor. However, the team that conditioned this offering either lacked those qualities (which I honestly doubt), or they simply didn't care to get it right. The book is filled with inaccuracies and misspellings. It is disjointed and frustrating to read.
Readers will find themselves constantly composing a letter to the publisher in their mind. If you are thinking of purchasing this book, wait for the softcover. Instead try Joe Drape's recent account of the triple crown series or try to find Sports Illustrated articles about Lukas.
    Specious at best.

1 out of 5 stars Inacuracies Spoil Substance.......2002-06-01

While a worthy topic, the incredible number of inacuracies (e.g., in the same paragraph, both Jeff Fell and Jacinto Vasquez were listed as the rider of Pleasant Colony in the '81 KY Derby. Nevermind that the rider was actually Jorge Velasquez...) make the book a frustrating and difficult read. The author also repeatedly calls colts "she." Wayne Lukas is a very complex figure, both loved and scorned. His tale deserves to be told, but it should be done much better than this.

1 out of 5 stars As entertaining as a soap opera.......2002-05-24

Save your money...This book isn't worth the paper in which it is written.

2 out of 5 stars This book breaks slow and never recovers.......2002-05-20

Inaccuracies aside and there are a lot of them (Northern Dancer being referred to as Native Dancer, etc.) This book is poorly written, nonlinear storytelling being a major fault. The author jumps back in forth in time when discussing horses and races. There also is nothing really new revealed in this book as it's mostly a rehash of already well published facts. Finally it doesn't help that Wayne comes off as humorless and unsympathetic here as he does in real life.

5 out of 5 stars Helped me more than anything.......2003-10-31

I had the opportunity to buy another book by this author several years but now regretfully passed and watched by investments go down the drain as I followed advice from another financial author.

Edelmans book helped me to recoup those losses and get back on track. I have since added "The Truth About Money" and "Ordinary People Extraordinary Wealth." I also recommend "The Road to Wealth" and "The Laws of Money" by Suze Orman, another credible financial author.

1 out of 5 stars don't rush to do any of this.......2003-06-19

Ric still assumes you can get 10% on investments. Right. And your Enron retirement plan will keep you cozy until you're 99.

                    2 out of 5 stars An insurance salesman's dream!.......2002-07-09

This book should have been titled "Why you need to overinsure yourself rather than plan for retirement!" Ric uses life insurance *AS* his retirement plan and recommends you maintain enough insurance to provide an INCOME to your family. Not just pay off your debts and provide some cushion for your family, but to actually LIVE off the income. Geez, no wonder insurance rates are sky high! I can see a larger policy for a working man with a wife and young children to support -- so that his wife can have a few years to find her own way. But this man is advocating using life insurance for something it was never intended to be used for.

On top of that, he completely discounts just how much all this life and disability insurance costs. He maintains that if you can purchase a VCR and TV, you can someone find the money each month for all this insurance. Well let me tell you, I did just a basic search for the numbers he recommended for my family and we would pay out OVER $500 a month just for insurance! No thank you. We'll stick with our meager $100,000 whole life policy and the term policy for paying off the mortgage.

And that's another thing! I've never read a financial planning book that advocates not paying off your mortgage! His entire chapter about that was totally contrary to ALL the other advice out there and I couldn't disagree more. One should maintain the status quo, pay your debts, save, invest, and then pay off the morgage! Provide for your own retirement and stop using life insurance as your retirement plan.

5 out of 5 stars Book achieves its goals.......2001-11-30

This book accomplishs its limited goal and does it well. To say the book is short on detail or substance misses the point of the book. Ric's other books do that. This book is meant to be a quick and basic primer on what people can do now, and it's not meant to be more. Furthermore, to say the author has questionable credentials is amusing. His firm was ranked by Bloomberg as the 5th-largest independent financial planning firm in the nation, with 5,400+ clients and $1.7 billion in client assets. Please, if you're going issue a poor review, make sure its not just a shallow and sleazy ranting.

With the evnets of 9/11, many of us don't know where to turn regarding our finances. This book will guide you with great advice. I'm glad I purchased it and will advise you to do the same. An easy read!!!

America's "forgotten war" lasted just thirty-seven months, yet 54,246 Americans died in that time -- nearly as many as died in ten years in Vietnam. On the fiftieth anniversary of this devastating conflict, James Brady tells the story of his life as a young marine lieutenant in Korea. In 1947, seeking to avoid the draft, nineteen-year-old Jim Brady volunteered for a Marine Corps program that made him a lieutenant in the reserves on the day he graduated college. He didn't plan to find himself in command of a rifle platoon three years later facing a real enemy, but that is exactly what happened after the Chinese turned a so-called police action into a war.The Coldest War vividly describes Brady's rapid education in the realities of war and the pressures of command.Opportunities for bold offensives sink in the miasma of trench warfare; death comes in fits and starts as too-accurate artillery on both sides seeks out men in their bunkers; constant alertness is crucial for survival, while brutal cold and a seductive silence conspire to lull soldiers into an often fatal stupor. The Korean War affected the lives of all Americans, yet is little known beyond the antics of "M*A*S*H."Here is the inside story that deserves to be told, and James Brady is a powerful witness to a vital chapter of our history.

I served in Korea with 3/7, USMC from Nov 1951 to Nov 1952.
This was a vivid reminder of that cold inhospitable place. The authot invoked many memories and for a moment I felt the bone numbing cold even in my warm home.
Although Brady was an officer and I an enlistem man we share the honor of being awarded the Title Unites States Marine.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful look at Marines at war in Korea .......2006-02-16

In "The Coldest War: A Memoir of Korea," author James Brady vividly describes what it was like to be a junior officer in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. Brady notes the irony of his decision to sign up for a Marine Corps officer training program: "I'd joined up to dodge the draft and ended up being sent to war." He gives many insights into the positions he held: platoon leader, company executive officer, and battalion intelligence officer. His narrative also illuminates the culture and organization of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Brady's story is rich in details of life in the Korean war zone. He discusses food, clothing, recreation, relationships among the Marines, and encounters with Korean civilians. The text is also full of fascinating technical details about the tactics and hardware of war; I was particularly interested in his passages about the mortarman's deadly art and the usefulness of the Browning Automatic Rifle. Brady makes the story come to life with his evocative descriptions of sounds of different weapons, the sizzle of hot brass hitting the snow, and other realities of wartime. He doesn't shy away from discussing the real down-and-dirty details of his service. He vividly describes the personal hygiene aspect of front-line duty; I found a dry humor to his graphic discourse on one of the unpleasant side effects of not bathing for a long time.

Brady's story includes vivid anecdotes about revelry at a British officers' mess, a visit to the relative luxury of a hospital ship, and more. He also recalls the punishingly cold weather, and includes some gripping accounts of combat. He presents the violence, death, and destruction of war without flinching. The text is enhanced by several black-and-white photos showing Brady, his fellow Marines, and the environment in which they lived and fought. The Korean conflict has been called a "forgotten war"; this makes Brady's thoughtful, well-written personal account even more valuable. It's both an important historical document and a powerful piece of literature.

I do not know James Brady and hae no connection to him. I know him mostly from his good writing in Crain's New York Business. His Memoir of Korea was simply a great and compelling read. It was like being in front of a fire with a vintage port wine, a Cuban cigar and a friend who finally decides to tell you his story. That the friend is a master racounteur (sp?) helps and that James Brady has one hell of story to tell also helps. Thanks Mr. Brady. Here's to you and your buddies who sacrificed so much. May all your nights be warm.

My criteria for a book is simple. The writing has to be good: This one is well-written. A book has to capture my attention: This one does that. And a good book should never break-the-spell with crude interruptions...like gross factual errors, improbable-implausible action, and gross incongruence in the traits of the character's. There are no "What in hell was that all about?" moments in this book. Brady's experience in Korea is similar to my Vietnam experience, and it's similar to other recollections of Korea. But the bottom-line is: Is this book a "keeper" for the library? It is.

while it is true that Mr. Brady was a Marine and in the Korean War, his writing 45+ years later leaves doubts about it. For example the word Marine is alwaysa used as as proper noun, yet in none of his books does he do this. Secondly, Marines don't wear FATIGUES, they wear UTILITIES. They wear trousers, not pants. Finally, the rank Gunnery Sgt. did not exist during Korea, that rank came out in around '59 or so. The gunny of Korea was a Tech Sdt. for a good book on Korea, read COLDER THAN HELL by Owens, or THE LAST PARRALEL.

Dramatic and filled with horror, the clash at Passchendaele Ridge was one of World War One's bloodiest. After years of stalemate, the British and French armies launched a massive offensive, only to find themselves literally bogged down in low ground that had turned into a quagmire. By battle's end, over 300,000 Allied and 260,000 German soldiers had perished. Includes a wealth of previously unpublished testimonies from the Imperial War museum.

                              3 out of 5 stars Reinforcing Failure.......2003-07-26

Between 31 July and 6 November 1917, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) under the command of Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig launched a series of major attacks against the German defenses in Flanders. While this four-month British offensive is known as the Third Battle of Ypres, the battle is also strongly associated with the destroyed village of Passchendaele where it culminated. After four months of horrific fighting, the BEF had advanced only five miles at the cost of 275,000 casualties and even worse, most of the territory was abandoned when the Germans started their own offensives in 1918. The Third Battle of Ypres was controversial in its day and has become more so over time, indeed it has become a metaphor for waste and futility. In Passchendaele: The Sacrificial Ground, authors Nigel Steel and Peter Hart offer an anecdotal-driven account of the British offensive. Steel and Hart's account lacks the chronological format and comprehensiveness to classify it as a true work of military history but rather, it leans toward being a collection of British trench stories.

Passchendaele: The Sacrificial Ground consists of nine chapters and an epilogue. There are a total of six not-very-helpful maps, which depict only advance lines, not unit locations or boundaries. The lack of a detailed order of battle is a serious deficiency, which makes it difficult for the reader to determine where the participant's cited were located on the battlefield. However, the greatest deficiency in the book is the complete lack of perspective from the German side. Although the authors cite Ludendorff's post-war memoirs on a number of occasions, there is only one German soldier's account of the battle versus more than 200 British accounts. None of the German army commanders (Gallwitz, Arnim) are ever mentioned in this account, nor is a single German unit of any size ever identified. Clearly, the authors have done not a whit of research on the German side, which seriously degrades the value of this account. On the other hand, the British accounts are often good and they are extremely varied, covering infantry, artillery, engineer, aviation and signal perspectives. Most readers, accustomed to thinking of artillerymen in the First World War as the "fair haired boys" in the rear will be surprised how rough the British redlegs actually had it in the Ypres salient.

Much of rationale for the British offensive was based on the need to create "a strategic distraction" in order to divert the Germans from discovering the widespread mutinies in the French army. However, Haig honestly believed that a breakthrough of the German defenses was still possible and his vision was that the 3rd Ypres would lead to the clearing of the Belgian coast. Once it became obvious that a breakthrough was not possible, Haig resorted to attrition as his rationale for continuing the offensive, claiming that German collapse was imminent. While the authors do note that Haig could have evacuated the Ypres salient instead of trying to expand it, British pride and Haig's obstinence prevented that more sensible course. Indeed, the authors never question the cosmic significance that Haig attached to Ypres, the British held ports of Calais and Dunkirk, or the German-held ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend. In actuality, the British could and did use larger ports such as Cherbourg for supply, and the loss of either Ypres or Dunkirk would not have had catastrophic effects upon the BEF. After all, the American Expeditionary Force was able to supply its troops from ports that were more than 20 miles from the front - couldn't the BEF do the same?

The authors conclude that Haig was wrong about imminent German collapse but correct that offensives were needed to keep the Germans off balance until the Americans arrived and the French recovered. Fine, but why Ypres - certainly the worst terrain on the entire Western Front? To read in these pages about 60,000 British missing during the offensive - including thousands who drowned in the mud - will infuriate and appall most readers. If offensives were necessary, why not pick better sectors like Cambrai (which Haig did not use until he was almost out of reserves) or even move several corps to attack in French sectors like Champagne? Why not go after exposed German-held salients like St Mihiel? It is clear that Haig lacked the imagination to try anything different and was content to batter away in the same old sectors.

From the intelligence perspective, we learn two things from Passchendaele. First, intelligence must speak with a single voice. The chief of British intelligence in London warned that German collapse was not imminent, but Haig preferred to listen to his own intelligence officer who cheerfully predicted that one more attack would cause a collapse. Throughout the battle, British intelligence officers at different levels offered starkly divergent analyses, and commanders were prone to accept the most optimistic ones. A second lesson from Ypres is that terrain analysis matters a great deal. Although the BEF was aware of the effects of heavy rains and mud on the offensive, these factors were minimized. In effect, Haig ignored terrain and weather and for that, he deserves to be pilloried by historians.

Passchendaele did offer a few tactical innovations as well. The Germans introduced concrete pillboxes and mustard gas - both missed by British intelligence prior to the battle - and these two devices helped to stymie the British offensive. The British improved their artillery tactics, but their improvement was not as strong as the authors suggest. British infantrymen still attacked walking upright as they did a year earlier on the Somme, and tanks were stupidly committed single file into swamps. Yet the greatest lesson of Passchendaele, never learned by Haig, is that in war you don't reinforce failure.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Account of the Fighting at Passchendaele.......2003-03-14

Nigel Steel and Peter Hart's third book covering the Great War deals with the Third Battle of Ypres, better known as Passchendaele. This book joins a long list of other titles covering this most horrendous battle of World War One. As in their previous books the authors utilize the accounts of many of the participants in this great struggle. From gunners and footsloggers to the men in the air trying to gain mastery of the airspace above the salient. Using first-hand accounts, interviews, letters and after action reports they put together a fairly comprehensive story of the fighting as experienced by British and Commonwealth soldiers. It must be said that there are very few similar accounts used in this book from the German side.

Overall they do reasonable well in presenting the story of the fighting in the Ypres salient from 1917-1918. However I feel that they may not have done as well as some previous books. At times I found that the narrative appeared to drag or lose its continuity. The authors have attempted to be very fair in their assessment of the British High Command and the involvement or lack of involvement of the politician's back home. The book does not appear to have an axe to grind in regards to any one person's culpability in regards to the tremendous casualties suffered for so little tangible gain. The authors simply present the facts and allow you, the reader, to determine who may be at fault for the loss of so many innocent lives.

I found that the authors offered a very good overview of the circumstances leading to this battle, the tactics used and the decisions of the Commanding Generals. Overall it's a very easy to read account of this battle and a good starting point for someone wishing to learn more about what the poor bloody `Tommy', `Aussie', `Kiwi' and `Canuck' suffered. I would also recommend for further reading Lyn MacDonald's `They Called it Passchendaele', Robin Prior and Trevor Wilson's `Passchendaele; The Untold Story', and books by Philip Warner, Winston Groom and Leon Wolff.

I would like to finish up with an account from the book where a young British soldier was about to go `over the top' during the offensive to take Pilckem Ridge on the 31st July 1917: "It was still dark but then suddenly it was illuminated by a line of bursting shells, but what was astonishing still was that we must all have been deafened by the noise. I looked at Herbert, I could see his lips move - I shouted but I couldn't hear myself at all. I wanted to tell him that we would keep together so I grabbed his hand and we went over together as we had gone to Sunday School - hand in hand." - Private Alfred Warsop, 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters.

                                Book Description

Oil makes up one-third of Venezuela's entire GDP, and the United States is far and away Venezuela's largest trading partner. Relations between Venezuela and the United States, traditionally close for most of the last two centuries, began to fray in the last decade as the end of the Cold War altered the international environment. The United States and Venezuela attempts to place the events of the past ten years in historical perspective and to explain the reasons why the changes occurred. It also examines the impact of new actors on the international scene: drug traffickers, common citizens, human rights and environmental activists and the media.

It's already slightly out of date but it's still an essential guide to Forest Park hiking. Through this book I found some of the most amazing sights within the city of Portland. I'd never have hiked some of those trails without the book to give me the confidence. After all, if the book shows the trail who am I to question its existence?
