A sweeping, yet detailed account of the Thirty Years War.......2004-02-17
This book is an important work of scholarship for anyone interested in the Thiry Years War. Although it deals with a highly complex period, it nevertheless reads well for someone who does not know much about seventeenth century Europe. This fascinating account of the first stages of the war is told from the perspective of Friedrich V, who ruled Bohemia for less than a year and triggered the longest, most devastating of all the conflicts of the Early Modern period. Mercenaries and kings, unceasing diplomacy and bloody conflict, loyalty and betrayal, all are seen in this sweeping, yet detailed account. This bright, energetic work challenges the usual interpretations about the causes and course of the Thirty Years' War.

Will Peyton Manning do for the pro football Indianapolis Colts what he did for his collegiate Tennessee Volunteers? Can he adjust to professional-caliber defensive schemes and justify the millions shelled out to sign him? Jimmy Hyams, author of this breathless biography, and apparently Manning's biggest fan, will tell you it's a done deal. According to Hyams, this quarterback is no ordinary Joe: he can throw a few touchdowns, take his mom to church, kiss an armload of babies, and give the less fortunate a helping hand all before most of us have gotten out of bed. Aside from this overt bias toward the subject and the publisher's annoying convention of nonindented paragraphs, Hyams has written a fairly interesting chronicle of the making of a superstar. Hyams is obviously well versed in Manning family lore and has done his homework in preparation for this, his first book. While tracing Manning's rise from high-school prospect to Heisman contender, and finally No. 1 draft pick to the NFL, he draws some intriguing comparisons to that other Manning, Archie, whose own noteworthy accomplishments may eventually be eclipsed by his strong-armed son. After reading Primed and Ready, the younger Manning's legion of fans can all share a conspiratorial high-five. Anyone still on the fence about the young quarterback will rest assured that even if the campus hero isn't someday named Superbowl Most Valuable Player, he's already a saint. --George Laney

Good reading for the college football fan.......1999-08-07
If you our a Peyton Manning, UT Football or just College Football fan you will like this book. It talks about the recruiting process and what it took to get Peyton to Knoxville and what it took for him to stay.
Shows the man behind the football mask, great........1999-04-25
I have always been a huge fan of Peyton Manning and wanted to read about him in a mid sized novel. I found exactly what I was looking for in this book, it told me everything I wanted to know from his upbringing and childhood, to his college football career, to NFL analysis of his ability to make it big in the NFL. For any one who wants to learn about the best quarterback in University of Tennessee history I suggest you read this book
A must read for Peyton Manning fans !!!!!.......1999-02-01
The book is complete with tons of inside info on Peyton, lots color and black & white photographs, and the overall sense of the kind of person the young Peyton is. I say this is for Manning and University of Tennesse faithful is because the books writer makes no qualms of the fact that he is a huge fan of both, which might get irritating to the non-fan. Still a must have for all who care.
Wonderful book!.......1998-11-22
Anyone who loves Peyton Manning, or Tennessee football will love this book. It takes Peyton's life all the way from childhood to the day he was the number one draft pick for the Colts. I learned many facts about Peyton that have never been released in the media. A must for Peyton/Tennessee football fans!

Real Options.......2007-05-14
Mun's book shows how real options problems, like those faced in the real world, can be solved. Other books may provide a better introduction to real options concepts, but the methods employed are suitable only for very simple problems. Where other approaches require that you develop your own lattices (or other solutions), Mun shows you how to use his Supper Lattice Solver and Monte Carlo simulation software to solve these problems. I am convinced that his approach will not only facilitate the solution of these problems, but will also be more readily accepted by management. I look forward to acquiring Mun's software and applying it in practice.
The Second Edition - A Great Practical Guide through the Real Option Debate.......2005-11-30
As practitioners and academics continue to grapple with quantifiable uncertainties in real asset decision making, the debate about real option models will no doubt continue.
Johnathan Mun's second book and more specifically his case study approach allows practitioners from diverse industries to enter the debate with simple excel asset pricing skills. To my mind there is no better pragmatic work on the topic than the second edition of Real Options Analysis. With the book in one hand and the robust SLS software up on the screen - framing, pricing and understanding real options is pretty straightforward.
Two points to note: After 30 days, just as you begin to get hooked on the superb software it is likely to gently expire. That's when you are saved by the second point; the author is hugely supportive - His `one line insights' in response to specific queries made this a great purchase.

On average: a good book .......2004-07-30
This was my first book on Real Options. After this, I complemented my knowledge with more accurate researches on the theoritic foundations on the subject (eg. Trigeorgis and Copeland).
What I liked of this text is that it was a soft landing into the Real Option world, with a simple and easily understandable description. Its major pro is to present transparently the basics of a concept that is often approached at a too high and formal level.
What I did not like is the fact that few chapters at the end were not really useful but full of stuff and formulas with no explanations that cannot practically be used. I had the sensation they were out of place, since I could grasp their meaning only after passing to more comprehensive books.
One more criticism is that you don't understand the effect of the difference between private and public risk in real options evaluation as you do with other texts. However, I still consider this the book where I formed my basics before being able to master some other more detailed book (but also more difficult to master). The Crystall-Ball package was also a nice surprise. At the end, if you consider the price and the content it was surely good value for money even though it's not a masterpiece.
An excellent book for intermediate reader.......2004-01-28
Mun's book is an excellent guide for those who have basic knowledge about asset valuation and want to study real options.
decent read on real options.......2003-07-07
decent read... did a good job on explaining practical uses of real options. would have been better if not so much written promoting the use of crystal ball. overall, happy to see that minimizes coverage on replicating portfolios and focuses on risk neutral prob. i recommend this book, especially if mba student and brief coverage in intro class of real options leaves you interested / unfulfilled.
Book Description
We had to do it. We had to reprint this book. Rarely has a book had such an impact on so many of us here at Ignatius Press. It is one of the most powerful and moving books we have come across. If you can only buy one book this season, this must be the one. Here is the astonishing true story of the harrowing experiences of a young German seminarian drafted into Hitler's dreaded SS at the onset of World War II. Without betraying his Christian ideals, against all odds, and in the face of Evil, Gereon Goldmann was able to complete his priestly training, be ordained, and secretly minister to German Catholic soldiers and innocent civilian victims caught up in the horrors of war. How it all came to pass will astound you.
Father Goldmann tells of his own incredible experiences of the trials of war, his many escapes from almost certain death, and the diabolical persecution that he and his fellow Catholic soldiers encountered on account of their faith. What emerges is an extraordinary witness to the workings of Divine Providence and the undying power of love, prayer, faith, and sacrifice. Illustrated

The Great Power of Prayer!.......2006-12-16
Have you ever read a book that you wanted to tell all your friends about? A book that you thought everyone should read? This is it!
This is a most amazing story that will convince you of the great power of prayer. I recommend this book to all who pray, not just Catholics.
If you enjoy this book, you will also enjoy reading "The Grunt Padre" by Fr. Daniel Mode. Fr. Vincent Capodanno died while serving in Vietnam. The cause for Beatification and Canonization for Fr.Capondanno was initiated in 2006.
Light in the Darkness.......2006-07-16
Just as light shines in the darkness, Gereon Goldmann (a good-hearted Franciscan) witnesses for Christ in the midst of WWII. This autobiography is a MUST READ for anyone that doubts, for anyone that may have the least amount of curiosity to have a trickle of faith filter through his existence when all else around grows dim. This TRUE STORY is simply amazing and well written.
I was first introduced to THE SHADOW OF HIS WINGS a few years back by a friend when I wanted my junior high students to read something of WWII, where good and evil are contrasted, through the eyes of faith. It seemed fundamental, since, in hindsight we can ask questions of the bystanding Germans, Italians, and Poles that lived at the time: Why wasn't more done to prevent such a horror? Why didn't the Church stop this evil? Didn't people know that those trains were carrying cargo of soon-to-be corpses of perverted experimentation? The book does not get into the particulars of evil, but rather, gives the reader a tender notion of good versus evil in the most pivotal way, an incredible story to be read over and over again.
I am presently writing a unit plan for grades six through twelve to parallel this remarkable story.
See and read what so many do not, a beautifully told story on the horizon of understanding of how God works miracles... LIFE among the lifeless.
A must read for all Catholics.........2006-01-03
Father Goldmann struggled without ceasing.. He lived the Beatitudes within very difficult circumstances. His account describes the human drama as inflicted on innocent German soldiers(pawns of war)put through one of the most evil meat grinders of history -- Hitler's Reich... A very inspiring story...
Fabulous book for military or history buffs or.......2005-07-15
anyone. This is not just a Catholic book. After the first chapter, I couldn't put it down. My teenagers read it on their own and give it two thumbs up too.
Possibly one of the best books I've ever read........2002-07-18
I had a hard time putting this book down. I finished it in 3 days which for me, with a busy work and family life, is quite an accomplishment.
This book will bolster your faith in God, the Sacraments, and in the life of prayer. There are many examples in this book about how prayers were answered.
I also found Fr. Goldmann's audacity, at times funny, to be quite remarkable.
This is a must read.

Lenin is the key to understanding the Russian Revolution. His dream was the creation of the world's first Socialist state. It was a short-lived dream that became a nightmare when Stalin rose to absolute power in 1929. Lenin was the avant-garde revolutionary who adapted Marxist theory to the pravtical realitites of a vast, complex and backward Russia.

A few important mistakes.......2004-01-15
Now I've read just read this book and have come up with a few important mistakes in the text. A small example is that it claims that Martov "has first-hand experience of stick-action among Jewish socialist workers (the Bund). The first mass strike of 15,000 Bundists occurs at a Bialystok textile industry in 1895." (p.48)
This is all very nice except that Martov was a Jewish Socialist, yes, but not a Bundist, which is obvious from page 70 onwards when the Bund walks out of the 27th session, but Martov stays with the Mensheviks. Another problem with this statment is that it would have been impossible for the Bund to organise a 15,000 worker, mass-strike in Bialystok in 1895, becuase the Bund wasn't formed until 1897. And no the name was not simply chosen for the organisation because it was popular and therefore it was an easy mistake. The name of the Bund was debated over and changed three times before it got it's full name.
Good idea, but really, these factual errors are embarressing.
Lenin, Liberation, and Laughs.......2002-09-18
Whilst many may claim that this book is a celebration of the machine that allowed Stalin to instigate genocide upon Russia, it is the underlying satire and wit that guide's the reader through the basics of the Russian revolution and to more complex questions that pose themselves in the post-glasnost era. This is not a complete overview of Russia in the grips of socialism, but that was never the purpose. The book highlights the important aspects of the period and introduces the more multifaceted situations. A superb read and a good buy.
Good for a basic overview and not much more..........2002-07-07
This small book is good for a quick overview of the the Russian Revolution and Lenin's life. It explains the basic ideas pretty well and has the important facts laid out in an interesting and easy to understand way.
Still, this book is biased towards Lenin's cause, and justifies to too great an extent Lenin's killing of hundreds of thousands of people in the Red Terror.
If you need a quick study guide on the Russian Revolution, this book is fine - just keep in mind that Lenin was not really as benevolent a person as he is made out to be in the cartoons. But, if you are trying to really understand the topic or write a serious research paper on it, save your money and buy another book on Lenin, such as "Lenin" by Robert Service.
Hitler should have had this guy write his biography.......2002-04-07
Okay, some of the "factual" stuff, dates and events is worth reading - if you can ignore the fact that this book basically celebrates a man who killed millions (much of it genocidal) and instigated the enslavement of half the planet.
With the opening of the Soviet archives (an event that happend after the writing of this book) it became apparent that Stalin wasn't the first "bad-boy" of the Soviet Union. The purges, the pograms, the elimination of political rivals (a tactic later modeled by Hitler) started with Lenin. But you won't hear about that in this book. Like a Holocaust denier, the author avoids anything resembling facts and uses rhetoric to paint a warm picture of one of the most evil men of the 20th Century.
... Appignanesi ignores earlier works like Gulag Archipelago to paint a portrait of a loving socialist seeking to better the world.
Old school communist apologists like Appignanesi have a difficult time realizing that "the great experiment" failed miserably. This book is ample proof of how far they'll go to rationalize their devotion to their anachronistic ideology.
Read it in the same light as you would watch Triumph of the Will (Sans the homoerotic scenes of Germans bathing each other (shudder)). It's the work of someone so blinded by their ideology, they can't see the blood on the walls.
An informative and funny introduction........2000-10-03
It is difficult to believe that a figure as complex as Vladimir Lenin could be successfully presented in a simple and humorous manner, but this book does exactly that. It is excellent not only for beginners seeking a quick overview of Lenin and the Russian Revolution, but also provides a refreshing antidote for experts who have grown weary of trying to plough through the biased and deadly dull works of hacks like Richard Pipes and Dmitri Volkogonov. You'll get a much more informative portrait of Lenin from this book's 175 short pages of cartoons mixed with facts than you would from Volkogonov's 500 page diatribe (_Lenin: A New Biography_).
Is this book a case of "Schoolhouse Rock" meeting the Russian Revolution? Not exactly. It is more ideally suited for high-school students and young adults, but readers of all ages will enjoy the light-hearted format. It occasionally displays a slight bias in Lenin's favor, but this should be seen as a good thing when you consider that even the better biographies of Lenin accessible to American readers (Adam B. Ulam's _The Bolsheviks_, for example) all contain a much more decided bias against him.
Considering that it is inexpensive and will only take a day or so to finish, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Lenin and the Russian Revolution. You'll get a few laughs from it, too.
Book Description
From the thawing Arctic to the rising shoreline of Manhattan, people are feeling the effects of global warming in ways hardly imagined just a few years ago. i Feeling the Heat /i takes readers to the hot spots where global warming is not just a scientific debate but a matter of survival. br br Richly illustrated with photographs from around the world, the book captures the most dramatic evidence from the front lines of climate change: the glaciers of Montana's Glacier National Park may well be gone in 30 years; Australia's Great Barrier Reef is threatened with extinction as warming waters kill coral around the world; the entire ocean nation of Fiji is disappearing under rising tides; breathing the air in southern India is equivalent to smoking twenty cigarettes a day. Even the retaining wall of the former World Trade Center--merely ten feet above sea level--may have to be raised before new construction can begin. br br Many consequences are subtle and indirect, like the rise in malaria as mosquitoes proliferate or the increase in violent storms around the world. Traveling the globe with some of the world's most respected observers of global warming, i Feeling the Heat /i is a vivid portrait of the people coping day to day with climactic disruptions.
Customer Reviews:
Learning by example.......2004-09-06
It is usually easier to understand multifaceted issues through specific case studies and illustrations. Climate Change and Global Warming are very complex concerns indeed. Many people do not want to see the realities confronting us. Many skeptics argue that climate change is a phenomenon of nature and/or something delayed to the future. Indications from far away places need not concern us. Raising temperatures by 0.6 degrees C is hardly worth thinking about. If it means that we have warmer weather for a few weeks longer, that can only be comfortable for people living in northern climes.
Not so, argue Jim Motavalli and his colleagues. The intricacies of climate change and recent warming trends in remote places such as Alaska and the Antarctic reveal that the warming of the planet impacts us all already. In a selection of "dispatches" compiled by the editors of E/The Environmental Magazine, a distinguished group of environmental reporters traveled the world - from Australia to the Pacific Northwest, from China to Europe, to record scientific assessments and human experiences. What can we learn from their observations?
A case of severe human impact on the environment is vividly explored in "The Cost of Coal" in Mark Heertsgard's report from China. Rapid economic development comes at a very high price. For the time being, the prime energy source there remains fossil fuels, resulting in extreme air pollution. Thick smog covers the cities and people suffer from respiratory and other health problems. Yet, if the alternative is to freeze in unheated houses or slowing down the industrial advances, Chinese see no choice. Aware of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions almost rivaling those of the (highest emitter) USA, Chinese politicians and technocrats showed little sympathy for the global impact. They dismiss it as "the cost of progress". At the same time, Chinese authorities regulate industry towards high level of energy efficiency.
Closer to home for many readers is a wake-up call on raising sea levels. Motavalli and Barnes paint a devastating picture of what is in store for Greater New York from the underappreciated impact of global warming. Not only the tourist industries as the beaches of Florida or Fiji will suffer destruction, island states in the Pacific Ocean are already preparing for the exodus of hundreds of thousands of environmental refugees. The trends are unmistakable. On the other hand, examples from Europe provide a glimmer of hope. No longer waiting or sitting on the fence, Europeans have taken the lead in "planning ahead", proving that increasing use renewable energy and economic growth can be combined successfully.
Writing about insects and other creatures appearing in ecosystems where they don't belong, several articles demonstrate that the ecosystem balance is under threat. Warming ocean water results in fish and other sea animals moving out of their traditional habitats. Their food sources may not have done the same and new dangers may loom in the new environment. The food chain starting with the smallest critters is already interrupted with impacts on animals further up the chain only a question of a short time. While the field scientists interviewed for the articles remain cautious, stating that not all global warming should be blamed of human impact, the indications of increasing danger cannot be overlooked.
FEELING THE HEAT, while written by several authors, depicts a cohesive and coherent picture from some of the hotspots of global warming. Although at times depressing and exasperating, the underlying message is that of early warnings. The call on us has to be to do whatever we can to reduce human impact on the environment and climate. [Friederike Knabe]
Glimpsing our globe's grief.......2004-08-31
The human aspect of climate change is finally emerging into general view. Long dominated by measurements and struggles to pinpoint sources, this book describes how people are affected when weather becomes chaotic. As a collection of "dispatches from the frontlines" it chronicles what our neighbours [and ourselves] are experiencing. How are people coping with rising sea levels, shifting landforms and waning resources? This outstanding anthology of essays may be rightly equated with "war reporting" since it covers the battles for survival we are now engaged in. The only missing elements are generals to lead the fight and strategies to apply. Both are sadly lacking.
In but ten essays, the various authors portray changing local environments around the planet. Asian, European, North American and Pacific conditions are reported and comparisons offered. In Europe, Denmark stands as a bastion against polluting energy sources while enjoying continued prosperity. There, wind energy is being utilised to curb fossil fuel power station emissions. The turbines are finding markets in other EU nations, particularly Spain and Germany - each of which have greater windpower capacity than that of the United States - a telling statistic.
North Americans are slow to see the reality of conditions elsewhere. Asia, with its still burgeoning population, relies heavily on polluting fuels. Wood, pressed coal, even dung, all remain major fuels for heating and cooking - fundamentals in daily life. Such fuels produce soot and dust, which have produced a cloud over the Indian Ocean covering 10 million square miles. More than just an irritant - "you get used to it", one author relates - the cloud interrupts the food chain at sea. High altitude winds bring the particles to North America's West Coast. The dust bears micro-organisms as cargo, leading to "unexplained outbreaks" of viral infections. From the other direction, one-inch grasshoppers from Africa have appeared in the Caribbean. Clearly, the scenario is global.
Above the Caribbean, New York is already seeing the impact of rising sea levels. Wetlands are "developed" or flooded by salt water. "Exiled" species have nowhere to move, thus die out for lack of habitat. In the West, glaciers are shrinking, depleting the available water supplies for growing cities and struggling farms. Fish stocks are declining with the water loss. Warming oceanic water leads to species moving into new habitats. While this may be of temporary benefit, major foodstock species are losing ground, cascading the impact throughout the ecosystem.
The picture is grim, but not hopeless. Mechanisms exist to reduce the growing problem, but they must be more fully adopted. Motavalli is unequivocal in his denunciation of the current US administration. Compounded by media withdrawal of criticism, he argues that a "Manhattan Project" level of action is required. Motavalli argues that the Bush administration has declared "we must simply adapt to climate change" is foolish and shortsighted. A declared intent to build up to 1900 new power plants in the US "is a prescription for climate chaos". Existing technologies, such as Denmark's wind power example, would provide non-atmospheric warming energy. Failure to adopt the Kyoto Protocols was a major step backward in preventing worsening climate impact.
If the articles aren't descriptive enough, the book includes a superb photo essay by Gary Braash. This vivid series of images depict the shrinking glaciers, melting Antarcic ice pack - the greatest source of water raising sea levels, and increasing severe weather events. Emaciated polar bears, parched landscapes and homeless penguins may seem like distant, unrelated circumstances, but they reflect a growing global reality. Motavalli stresses that the world's most powerful, and most polluting, nation must be the one to take the most significant steps in curbing these degrading conditions. Readers will find this book challenging and disturbing -just its purpose. Learn what's happening on our globe - and react.

A"Wake-Up Call for Global Climate Change!".......2004-06-16
Editor Jim Motavalli has done an outstanding job of putting together a keleidoscopic picture of Global Climate Change by presenting a coherent and incisive selection of captivating essays, from a variety of scientific and jouranlistic perspectives. Even the most hardened skeptic could not help but be convinced that unless we act swiftly to wean ourselves from our obsessive addiction to Fossel Fuels, clean up our act in terms of Environmental Pollution, and shift our present Ways of Living and Thinking into a Sustainable Framework, the present and future inhabitants of Spaceship Earth are in for a rude awakening! If there were a New York Times Bestseller List for Ecological Books, this book would most certainly be included. For anyone interested in keeping abrest of the latest scientific evidence for Global Warming, buy this book and read it...from cover to cover! A set of thought-provoking, chilling facts.......2004-06-04
One would anticipate a discourse on climatic change to be a dry, scientific presentation relatively weighty for lay readers: not so with compiled and editor Jim Montavalli's Feeling the Heat: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Climate Change, which provides articles written by articulate contributors drawn from the front lines of the world's 'hot spots' where serious climate shifts are already in progress. From a 2003 European heatwave which killed 10,000 in France alone to the rising of the sea level in California, Feeling The Heat provides a set of thought-provoking, chilling facts.
