A masterpeice.......2004-09-15
Lamar Cecil should be applauded for writing an objective biography of Wilhelm II. Whilst this volume is in keeping with the high standards of the first, I am a little bit disappointed that his life after his 1918 abdication is a bit too sketchy, possibly due to the fact that Wilhelm II managed to outlive most of his contemporaries. This book is not about Wilhelmine dilpomatic history, or the Great War, but a well researched treatise on the malignant effects of autocratic rule by an unstable, pompous incompetent.
Superb.......2003-03-18
One of the most critically acclaimed studies of Wilhelm II is Lamar Cecilýs two-volume biography (1989, 1996 ), deemed by one reviewer as ýthe best-available English treatment of the waning years of the last Kaiserý available. Cecilýs portrait of Wilhelm is largely critical: the emperor ruled ýmaladroitly,ý throughout a ýbarren career that was without virtue or accomplishmentý (ix); ýbluster, rhetoric, and natural swagger cloaked a profound emptiness, for ignorance and self-indulgence were his primary characteristics.ý (1). Cecilýs assessment of the Kaiserýs war role is no less disapproving. ýDomestic issues rarely interested Wilhelm II,ý he notes (191), and emphasizes that the Kaiser was far more enamored by foreign policy and military minutiae. Despite this martial enthusiasm, Wilhelm was ýby nature peaceful,ý (194) and opposed war in 1914, afraid that a European conflict would distract Germany from the internal threat of socialism.
Once the war began, Cecil shows, Wilhelmýs function was symbolic and superficial, at least as far as the imperial army was concerned. He often resided close to the front, was occasionally exposed to hostile fire, and relished hearing the roar of the guns. Cecil makes it clear that the Kaiserýs duties were limited to sending telegrams, war zone tours, medal presentations and other purely ceremonial tasksýýit was as empty an existence as he had had in peacetime.ý Cecil flatly asserts that Wilhelmýs ýpart in the war, especially as it concerned the army, took a secondary place behind the role of his officers.ý (210). He was for the most part shielded by his ubiquitous military entourage, fearful that his inability to ýwithstand the strains of warfareý would break him. ýThe Kaiserýs ignorance of the true nature of the struggle in which Germany was engaged,ý Cecil frankly summarizes, ýwas profound and his utility to his military leaders quite limited.ý He was in essence a figurehead, ýcontent merely to hear and endorseý the opinions of his generals. Soon after the war began, Cecil concludes, Wilhelm became ýa ýshadow Kaiserý (schattenkaiser), out of sight, neglected, and relegated to the sidelines in imperial Germanyýs hour of trial.ý (212)
This is the gold standard of Kaiser Wilhelm II biographies.
A detailed analysis of the last Kaiser.......1999-12-13
For a German history junkie, these volumes are a good 'fix'. The text is written humorously and yet fairly, without the usual bias one sees when "the victor writes the history". The analysis of the last Kaiser's life is placed in the context of the monarchical attitude of 19th century Europe, as well as the influence that his relatives in the British Empire had on his outlook. I've read the books twice. Without understanding at least some german it would be difficult to get the complete gist of what the author is trying to convey without it.
Needed Schlorship.......1999-08-30
For the past several years Ihave been a student of late 19th and early 20th century Europe. A starting place had to be found, which is much easier said than done. My readings kept leading me back to Germany, i.e., Prussia. I only wish I had discovered Professor Cecil earlier. His two-part biography of Wilhelm II has proved indispensable. I can't fathom reading one volume without the other, but since this review speaks to Volume II, "Wilhelm II,Emperor and Exile, 1900-1941,we'll have a go. The best way to read Volume II is to read the last sentence of the book first, where Professor Cecil applies a paraphrase from the Duke of Wellington who was describing the late George IV. Cecil thusly applies it to Wilhelm: "a sovereign who lived and died without having been able to assert so much as a single claim on the gratitude of posterity." The joy of the book is getting to that last sentence. It's all in there: feuding with his uncle, King Edward VII of England; the "Mad Hare" Telegraph article; the absolute idiocy of the naval arms race with England;his ill-fated dependence on the rotting Habsburg Empire; his hatred of any form of parlimentary government; and finally his almost tragic descent when he had lost the confidence of German Military Command, members of his own family, and millions of the German people. Good books on Wilhelm are hard to find. This one, especially when taken with Volume I, is outstanding.
gripping, wrenching, it almost made me squeal.......1999-04-04
Lamar Cecil presents a suspenseful yet satisfying book in Willhelm II. Not only does he express the inner thoughts of Willhelm, yet shows a personal side which expresses the crown prince's poryphia stricken reduced him to a stalk raving mad wildabeast. Not only was he stalk raving mad, the wildabeast confronted his homosexual tendencies with Eulenburg and Walderee.

Book Description
Perhaps the most unassuming and unlikely hero in Kansas City sports history, Priest Holmes has already etched his name in the Chiefs' record books. He led the Chiefs in rushing for the second year in a row in 2002 and was named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. The five-foot-nine package of dynamite led the NFL with 24 touchdowns and was on pace to break the single-season mark of 26, set by St. Louis's Marshall Faulk in 2000, but missed the final two games of the season with a hip injury. Holmes has a love of the game that can be traced back to his prep days at John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas. He went on to enjoy a solid career at the University of Texas and beyond. The story of Priest Holmes's rise to the top of the NFL is the stuff legends are made of. The devout father of two young boys has risen to new heights in the annals of the NFL. Perhaps the only thing more difficult than tackling Holmes is getting him to open up about his success on the playing field. That's why his teammates, opposing players, his coaches and some very special fans will paint a vivid picture of what Priest Homes means to Kansas City -- both on and off the field -- in Priest Holmes: From Sidelines to Center Stage.

Book Description
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT LOOKING AT NUDITY IS A SIN?
Most Bible-believing Christians are against all forms of pornography. They believe that images of naked women are harmful because they tempt men to commit the sin of lust. Using Biblical principles, John Solomon explains how Christians (and non-Christians) can enjoy looking at beautiful nudity in photos and films and not be guilty of any sin.
DO YOU FEEL GUILTY WHEN LOOKING AT NUDITY?
This book will explain why it isn't a sin to look at images of nudity. John Solomon doesn't advocate hardcore porn, or sexually-explicit pornography, but rather tasteful and natural displays of non-sexual nudity in photos and films.
SOME OF THE TOPICS IN THIS BOOK INCLUDE:
The Pitfall of Puritan Morality.
Reading and Writing Erotic Poetry isn't a Sin.
Nudity in the Garden of Eden.
What the Bible says about Nudity.
A Proper Definition of Sexual Lust.
How to be Free from the Sin of Lust.
A Proper Definition of Pornography.
Why it isn't a Sin to Look at Images of Nudity.
Answers to Common Arguments Against Looking at Nudity.
Why it isn't a Sin for a Woman to Pose Nude
The Beauty of Non-Sexual Nudity in Photos and Films.
Defining Tasteful and Natural Nudity.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Beginning for Thoughful Discussion About Nudity for Christians.......2007-04-23
I enjoyed reading (and re-reading) this book by John Solomon. In it, he outlines his reasoning why he believes that, in many circumstances, just being nude or enjoying watching others who are nude is not a sin for Christians. He doesn't advocate that nudity is for everyone, or that you can watch any actions carried out while being nude without limits, but opens the door for righteous possibilities of enjoying nudity beyond where the vast majority of Christians and their denominations and churches of today are comfortable discussing.
This is not to say that I agree with John 100% on every point. In some of his assertions, I think he has not carried the logic through far enough. On others, I might pull back a bit more than he might. But overall, I would agree with his basic premise, that being that nudity is, in and of itself, no more a sin than, well, wearing clothing. Sin is a heart-thing first, and an action thing second; an action can only be sinful if the sinful heart is driving it.
Two areas that John talks briefly about are the issues of (1) lust and (2) being a stumbling block to other Christians. These were troubling issues for me as well at one time. However, I found the writings of another Christian author quite helpful in understanding these areas more clearly. His name is Jeff Bowman and the articles are "Porn-Free: Breaking the Bondage" ([...]) and "Stumbling Over the Issue of Stumbling Blocks" ([...]).
Wouldn't it be great to see a group study with men and women, young and old, that simply started with reading this book, then researching the various topics, discussing them with each other, and praying about them together, all in a concerted effort to find real truth--God's Truth--wrapped in a protective covering of love? I certainly think it would.
I highly recommend this book.
Understanding the Truth.......2007-02-23
I enjoyed the book. He approached a subject that I often had a hard time
dealing with in the past. I think most Christians do not want to
expose themselves to these types of things to make sure they don't cross a
line. The problem is they are not sure (myself included) where the line is.
I think the book clearly defines the "line" and opens the door for enjoyment
of some movies/things that are traditionally cursed or deemed
"unappropriate".
Worth It........2007-01-20
This book was really interesting because what was said in it is something that I have misunderstood for a long time. I found that John's interpretation of the Bible concerning the subject of viewing nudity was correct because he thinks openly about a subject that many Christians join together and write off as a sin to do. I don't want to get specific because that would give away the whole book. I actually looked at the other reviews of this book before I bought it, and was skeptical if it was worth the money. It is worth the money because if you were brought up with a certain strict view about viewing nudity, then the knowledge of this book will be new to you and will show you the way that the Bible is left open to your own interpretations in some ways.
Christians Viewing Nudity.......2005-06-18
First of all, I must applaud the author for having the boldness and courage to tackle such a controversial topic. A lot of the points made in this book are ones that I myself have thought about. I will be reading this book some more to clarify a few things for me personally.
It is extremely important to remember in reading this book that you must 1) read with an open mind and 2) consider what you are reading prayerfully. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take your own religious belief and call the author a heretic for what he believes about christians viewing nudity.
This is a book that should be discussed openly and honestly with anyone who can discuss it in a rational manner.
More Christians need to read this book........2005-06-05
This book has an important point to make. As Christians, we need to understand that imposing additional moral standards not given in the Bible is no different than what the Pharisees did in Jesus' time. God is more pleased with a pure heart than with following a strict set of codes. To impose that everyone avoid looking at nudity is no different than banning alcohol. While drunkenness is a sin, drinking is not, as Jesus drank wine in the Bible. Similarly, some people may commit the sin of lust when seeing nudity, but it is not a sin to appreciate the beauty of the naked human body. We need to also understand that there is a difference between lust and arousal. Simply being aroused isn't a sin, it's what we do with that feeling that matters. The author backs up all of his main points with scripture, and points out that the reason many people feel overcome with sexual desire when seeing nudity may be precisely because nudity is taboo and therefore they are not used to seeing it. I think that more Christians need to read this book.
Also, for those interested in non-sexual nude photographs displaying the beauty of women, I highly recommend the website domai.com, referred to in this book.

Accurate, succinct, and useful.......2003-01-21
If you are looking for a book that covers the special forces of WWII and how to incorporate them into the GURPS game system, this is it.
Mr. Fisher has done an excellent job of maintaining both historical accuracy and game integrity. The writing style flows well and makes for an easy and informative book. For those of you who are not experts on WWII, this book may even prove educational :-)
Size doesn't matter..........2003-01-16
GURPS has long been known for the attention to detail that it displays in its world books - thankfully GURPS WW2: Hand of Steel lives up to the pedigree.
Don't expect a wide range of detail in this book - it is one of SJ Game's new "mini-book" supplements. If you want the full low down on World War II and its participants, buy the core book and the other full size releases in the line.
What you do get though is a concise, intelligent, and historically accurate portrayal of the "special forces" in the conflict that spawned the modern understanding of that term. Everything from Wehrmacht combat engineers to US Marine Raider battalions - you are not limited by theatre or nationality, although the ommission of Italian special forces (extremely minor though they were in WW2) is a noticeable ommission.
Not that that effects the way the book works. If you want a Tech Level 6 military orientated campaign source, this book is essential. Games following the Real World WW2, Alternate Earths campaigns, even contemporary and near future special forces orientated games will benefit from the information in this book.
I am thoroughly satisified that I bought it - a great gaming aid and a good historical read. Nicely done.

Three volume set with companion DVD!
Since Volume I of The Systems Thinking Playbook was published in 1995, it has become a favorite of K-12 teachers, university faculty, and corporate consultants. The book provides short gaming exercises that illustrate the subtleties of systems thinking. Volume II appeared in 1996, adding ten new games. Volume III was added with ten entirely new exercises contained in 165 pages, doubling the size of the book! In 2005, the authors added a companion DVD of videos illustrating good practice in introducing and running the 30 games.
The 30 games are classified by these areas of learning - Mental Models, Team Learning, Systems Thinking, Shared Vision and Personal Mastery. Each description clearly explains when, how, and why the game is useful. There are explicit instructions for debriefing each exercise as well as a list of all required materials. A summary matrix has been added at the back for a quick glance at all 30 games. When you are in a hurry to find just the right initiative for some part of your course, the matrix will help you find it.
Linda Booth Sweeney and Dennis Meadows both have many years of experience working with adults. This book reflects their insights. Every game works well and provokes a deep variety of new insights about paradigms, system boundaries, causal loop diagrams, reference modes, and leverage points. Each of the 30 exercises here was tested and refined many times until it became a reliable source of learning. Some of the games are adapted from classics of the outdoor education field. Others are completely new. But all of them complement readings and lectures to help participants understand intuitively the principles of systems thinking.
The book includes many quotations from practitioner, who share their insights about the relevance of specific exercises. There are also citations for related reading

Trainers: Keep this one handy........2003-05-14
As corporate trainers and authors of books for trainers, we keep a lookout for quality and innovation in our field. The Systems Thinking Playbook is a handy three-ring binder filled with interactive lessons that breathe life into systems theory. These clear lesson plans make sometimes intimidating concepts accessible and can inspire course designers to strike off in their own creative directions. If any part of your job includes helping people function in groups or organizations, you should keep The Systems Thinking Playbook within easy reach. - Bill Withers and Keami D. Lewis
President, Metalens.......2000-05-05
The Systems Thinking Playbook is one of the most pragmatic and effective books I have found that actually enables one to take theory into practice and make it fun! Learning is most effective when one embodies concepts and Linda Booth Sweeney and Dennis Meadows have done a wonderful job here. Play with it and learn!
Great with multi-cultural groups, but more references needed.......1999-07-22
Here in South Africa we have no less than 11 official languages! Can you imagine how many mental models are at work in organisations?
As a teacher of Systems Thinking, especially Managerial Cybernetics, I have found the exercises very helpful in grounding the concepts and unlocking the rich variety of perspectives that make up the South African gestalt.
Everytime I facilitate an exercise I learn something new. Makes for a great learning partnership. However, there is a risk that groups have so much fun, they neglect the challenge to get more deeply into 'the thinking within systems thinking' i.e. epistemology and ontology, and may miss opportunities for even deeper awareness and consciousness.
Some more references to other Systems Thinkers and their writings might be useful as follow through and encouragement to embark on deeper learning cycles that lead to more rigourous understanding.

Someone was bound to go after Michael Moore eventually and this book holds nothing back. An immensely popular figure to political left-wingers, Michael Moore presents himself as a regular working-class guy in a baseball cap with the courage to take some rich and powerful folks to task for their corrupt and deceitful ways. David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke say this populist, muckraker image is pure whitewash. Believing that this charade has gone on for too long, and done too much damage to the U.S., they have written this book to expose Moore as narcissistic and irresponsible and his body of work "as manipulative as totalitarian propaganda." To prove their point, they pick apart Moore's books and movies to illustrate how he is consistently manipulative, dishonest, and, at times, simply absurd. They show how he altered the timeline of Roger and Me in order to unfairly blame things on General Motors that happened before their layoffs, not as a result of them. Regarding Bowling for Columbine, the authors explain how he took quotes out of context and reassembled them to give the impression that people made speeches they did not make---most famously his interview with Charlton Heston, then president of the NRA. They also illustrate how Moore manipulated statistics in his books Dude, Where's My Country and Stupid White Men to fit his theories, making some truly outrageous claims in the process. The authors have certainly done their homework, and it's impossible to view Moore's work the same way after reading this book. "How does a man with so many contradictions manage to blind his enormous trove of followers to how hypocritical he really is? How does he get away with it?" they ask. If the authors have their way, he won't much longer. Now that Moore has joined the ranks of the rich and powerful, Hardy and Clarke have engaged in bit of muckraking of their own. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
Watching Michael Moore in action -- passing off manipulating facts in Bowling for Columbine, spinning statistics in Stupid White Men and Dude, Where's My Country?, shamelessly grandstanding at the Academy Awards, and epitomizing the hypocrisy he's made a king's fortune railing against -- has spurred authors David T. Hardy and Jason Clarke to take action into their own hands. In Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man, Hardy and Clarke dish it back hard to the fervent prophet of the far left, turning a careful eye on Moore's use of camera tricks and publicity ploys to present his own version of the truth.
Postwar documentarians gave us the documentary, Rob Reiner gave us the mockumentary, and Moore initiated a third genre, the crockumentary.
How, they ask, does Moore pull off a proletarian, "man-of-the-people" image so at odds with his lifestyle as a fabulously wealthy Manhattanite? And how large of an impact do his incendiary, ill-founded polemics have on the growing community that follows him with near-religious devotion? Loaded with well-researched, solidly reasoned arguments, and laced with irreverent wit, Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man fires back at one of the left's biggest targets -- politically and literally.

The Awful Truth - Michael Could Be A Liar!!!! .......2007-08-17
It took me quite a while to get this book discovered (more than two and a half years after its release). I already own two books (Stupid White Man and Dude, Where's My Country?) and a DVD (Fahrenheit 9/11) by Michael Moore. When I bought them all, it was not necessarily because I'm his fan and agreed with everything he said, but I thought that his pieces of work could be at least entertaining, for talking about controversial subjects which were en vogue.
This time around, I decided to see the flip side of the coin by buying "Michael Moore is a Big Fat Stupid White Man". At first I thought I would only see pointless and personal attacks to Michael, but the book actually does much more than that.
Basically, this book shows that every Michael's piece of work since his early years with Roger & Me is just a compilation of disconnected and unrelated facts assembled in such a way that the general public would believe the opposite. Throughout the reading, it is possible to find the most polemic points of each of Michael's works with explanations on how a certain "lie" became a "truth" after a good dose of manipulation. The book even approaches the details on what makes a documentary a real documentary and as it seems, none of Michael's movies can really be called a documentary, but just dumb entertainment.
If I remember well the details on how Michael's books and movies were made, the revelations from this book make a lot of sense to me, although I'm still not able to determine who's telling the truth in the end of the day. Maybe both, maybe none.
The only conclusion I'm able to draw is: regardless if this is a book which reveals the real truth about Michael or not, it entertained me a lot, just like Michael's ones. So my five-star rating is for the entertainment this book provided me, not necessarily because I believe in those presented assumptions.
Gibberish.......2007-07-21
Possibly the worst-written, most repetitive book I've had the displeasure to read. Was it really too much trouble for the "authors" to bother taking a writing class?
On the plus side, the pages turned out to be fairly absorbent...so it has that going for it.
Good book.......2007-07-19
It's difficult to write a good book on this subject because the authors are putting facts accurately as opposed to lying to make a good story. Nevertheless the authors do a good job exposing manipulations. And yes, Michael Moore does lie and manipulate facts; nobody non-communist should have any doubts especially after his recent promotion of health care in ... Cuba.
A bigger piece of poo does not exist in print!.......2007-05-14
It's truly amazing how many people will stoop to saying whatever sensational things they can dream up to make money. MM has his faults and truly is self centered, but you have to love his liberalistic attitude, and his willingness to expose the truth. I got the book for free from someone that was unfortunate enough to pay for it: A politics professor that was going to present it to his class. After reading it, he of course gave it away, and he is a conservative. If you love sensationalism and are looking for fuel for your hate fire, this is great kindling!
The truth Provaled!.......2007-04-18
This book answered the questions that Michael left unanswered. Why did he leave them unanswered? Because they faulted his arguments. Michael splices and edits interviews, news reports, and newspapers. Creates COMPLETELY false ads claiming the candidates for president at the time were running them on national tv. This book goes back as far as "Rodger and Me" to explain how Michael had no problem stabbing Rodger (spokesmen for GM at the time) in the back to make millions off of him. "we were friends" explained Rodger. This books shows that Michael can not be trusted. Even if you are the farthest left winger in this country, that Moore is not on your side. Claiming that Americans are idiots and deserved 9-11. and the day after 9-11 was mad because the terrorists attacked the wrong part of the country "should have hit the white house or in texas, the highest republican dominate states" and bumped and forced him to edit his book that was to release 9-12. Michael is not a good American and this book explains all his flaws not only in his books and movies but also through out his life. Great book. Would recommend to EVERYONE even if you like Michael, keep an open mind and read the book. Even the authors of the book read and watched Moore's documentary's.

Details on WW2 planes for modellers.......2004-10-02
Like Volume I (covering WW1 planes), this volume covers WW2 planes with reprints of drawings and articles aimed at scale modellers. 37 WW2 planes are covered, from Avro Lancaster to the Westland Whirlwind. Most of the obvious fighters and bombers from the US, Britain, Japan and Germany are included, along with a few pre-war types and trainers such as the Fairchild PT-19. I don't see any transport types however.
And doubtless any selection of only 37 will leave out one of your favorites. The photos are all black & white, the reproductions of the drawings are generally good, although I wonder if they were intended to be printed out in an 8x11" format.
The text includes matters of general interest, as well as specifics which bedevil modellers, like insignia size and placement, and how many variants of a certain plane were available.
Overall, a nice source of information for anyone modelling planes of this period.

Customer Reviews:
A beautiful rendition to the Puerto Rican coqui.......2005-12-17
Beautifully illustrated from its gracious cover to the last page, Rafael L. Joglar made a marvelous work telling the natural history, legends and myths surrounding one of Puerto Rico's most famous frogs, the coqui (pronounced "ko-kee").
In this, his first book, Joglar gives complete coverage to the most common species of the coqui without leaving behind others that can also be found in the Island of Enchantment, beautiful Puerto Rico.
With the use of just plain language, the author gives full detail of their behavior including eating habits and even their mating rituals. It makes a great coffee table book, a gift, or a souvenir from Puerto Rico for people of all ages. But it also makes an excellent reference book with its scientific approach.
Includes a foreword by famous writer Mayra Montero on how this little "creatures" touched her in a very personal way.
Rafael L. Joglar (Biology Professor at the University of Puerto Rico), alumnus from famous herpetologist, Juan A. Rivero (see Rivero's "Los anfibios y reptiles de Puerto Rico / The amphibians and reptiles of Puerto Rico") makes an original rendition to one of Puerto Rico's most beloved species of frogs.
