Book Description

The twentieth century witnessed the transformation of the area known currently as Iraq from a backward region of the Ottoman Empire, to one of the most important and dynamic states in the Middle East. The rise of modern Iraq has its roots in the second half of the nineteenth century when Ottoman reforms led to gradual state modernization and increasing integration in the World Economy. British control after World War I was one of the determining factors in the establishment of the current borders of the country and the nature of its subsequent national identity. The other important factor was the highly heterogeneous nature of Iraqi society being divided along tribal, ethnic, religious, and sectarian lines.
This book focuses on the interaction between the old and the new, or between continuity and change, as it is manifested in the nature of social development, nation-building, the state and the political opposition.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Brief and Balanced Account.......2005-08-26

This is the best brief book on Iraq and its history as it tells the story of this country starting with its pre-Islamic times of the Sessanids and going well into modern day. The brilliance of this book is based on two factors. First, its choice of what to highlight and what to leave out was extremely successful and relevant for those who want to read history to understand modern day Iraq, and second, its dependency on the bottom lines of reliable secondary sources instead of amassing a big number of quotes from primary sources in order to make a point or two.
The choice of what to cover and how to cover events from Iraq's history yielded this extremely helpful book that brings 5000 years of history into this concise and brief book.
Abdullah's style is extremely catching and flows with practically no repetition. Unlike most history books on the subject, Abdullah economizes with the number of names and dates that he included in the book in order not to distract the reader's attention by bombarding him/her with an unlimited number of often irrelevant names.
Furthermore, Abdullah maintains much needed objectivity when telling Iraq's story at the time most of history books on the Middle East are loaded with prejudice and either explicit or hidden propaganda.
Other valuable insights include Abdullah's tracing of the regional influence on Iraq, both from the Sunni Arab West and the Shiite Persian East. Abdullah also writes with the current internal Iraqi divisions in mind and as you finish the book, you will certainly end up with the impression that history repeats itself.

5 out of 5 stars Iraq - The Original Melting Pot.......2005-02-18

Grasping to make some sense of the chaos that is today's Iraq, I found A Short History of Iraq by T.A.J. Abdullah to be a throroughly engaging and enlightening read. Concise and with no apparent ax to grind Abdullah helps the inquiring reader gain some clarity to questions like "Who are these people of the Garden of Eden, caught betwen the Persians and the Turks?" What is the attraction of the poor of Baghdad to figures like Muqtada al-Sadr? What are the roles of Imams and shaykhs? How do the lingering shadows of the Ottoman Empire give a modern basis to the strife between Shi'i and Sunni. What is so important about Najaf and Karbala, why does everyone seem so contentious and why were the British so anxious to move back into Basra as the invasion wound down. After reading Professor Abdullah's book, today's chaos will seem no less chaotic. Taking account of two thousand years of turbulent history, however, gives one a feeling of empathy for the people civilizaton's oldest melting pot, and maybe a grain of hope.

I would recommend A Short History of Iraq to anyone who longs for a better understanding or feels compelled to offer an opinion on what he sees on the evening news, not the least of whom might be the commentators. I would like to say "Thank you" to Professor Abudllah for his timely work.

Book Description

The story of George Toma, who climbed form his roots in a poor coal-mining town to the top of his profession as a groundskeeper for sports stadiums--including every Super Bowl, is told.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2005-02-24

George Toma has inspired so many people with his great work ethic and dedication. This book does a fine job of detailing the life of a great man.

5 out of 5 stars Best Biography I've ever read.......2004-03-26

I don't think I've ever read any biography that did a better job painting a picture of a person. I laughed. I cried. I couldn't believe with which the art that Goforth used to paint his words. I especially liked reading about Toma's tales about getting the football field ready for the Super Bowl. That's probably why I liked this book--there was something in it for everybody--sports fans, George Toma fans, or anybody else who just wants to read a colorful, delightful book. This is one tome that should make any Toma lover happy. There should be more books out there by Goforth and other journalists like him. What a talent!

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Bergman book.......2001-04-24

My jaw drops at the Library Journal review supplied by Amazon of Frank Gado's magnificant Bergman book, but I note it appears to be a very early review. I had been a Bergman fan for years when Gado's book came out and when it did it was like lightning bolt. This is not just some pamphlet to add to your Bergman collection once you've read all the rest. This is the SEMINAL study of Bergman; no one can write about the filmaker in the future without knowing this book. It was the first to get past the religious mumbo-jumbo and the literary high mindedness to discover just what Bergman is actually saying. Meticulously researched and beautifully written, it is, above all, the most compelling psychological study of the director ever attempted. His discussion of "Persona," my own personal favorite Bergman film and admittedly a difficult nut to crack, quite simply renders useless virtually every other critique of the film that had been written previously, and that includes essays by Susan Sontag and a host of others with similarly sharp minds. These pages are filled with insight after insight. The only possible complaint I have is that Gado seems uninterested in the "filmic" quality of Bergman's work. There's little discussion of how the films look and feel via cinematography, framing, sound, lighting, editing, what have you. That's fine. If he hadn't left that for others there'd be little left for anyone to write about.

      Book Description

Elementary classroom teachers too often lack the confidence to present music to their students, because they themselves have little formal training in this area. SONGWORKS emphasizes singing as the means to teaching music in the elementary classroom. The authors assert that everyone sings (as a family on a car trip, singing as a child, singing the national anthem at a baseball game, singing Happy Birthday), therefore this is the most natural and effective basis for teaching music, and builds confidence among future teachers.

Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff is one of the most exciting cricketers in the world, and has gained more and more notoriety through the last few years. This book marks his story so far in his own words, taking us up to and including the summer of 2005. Freddie highlights the moments and matches in his career that helped him dramatically on his way forward, and reveals what it is like to play for one of the most successful England cricket teams in recent times.

      5 out of 5 stars Freddie Flintoff's Story - Outstanding Reading.......2005-11-21

I don't normally purchase books about stars who are in their prime but in the case of "Freddie" I made an exception. This book was read in just a few days and later on I plan to read it again and again. I have enjoyed every single page and nothing in this book was hard to read, heavy or boring. Andrew Flintoff has had some pretty difficult times, but through the honesty of true friends and by displaying a determination to reach the top in cricket he has been able to turn things around to the point that this summer he played a vital role in the glorious Ashes success over Australia. Though that Ashes success is only a few weeks old Andrew Flintoff details his thoughts and memories during those mesmerizing weeks This book also contains lots of beautiful colour photographs of Andrew Flintoff's career to date along with those from the recent Ashes success. Reading this book demonstrates plainly that Andrew Flintoff, world cricketing superstar, is still a down to earth bloke. I simply cannot recommend this book highly enough.

      5 out of 5 stars Quick & Fun.......2001-08-10

This book offers very easy to implement closers that can not only be quick and fun, but of course do what closers should do - reinforce learning. Some are certainly just for fun and when there is brain overload, those also have their benefit. As most of Pike's books, this is certainly a good one to have in your library.

      5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Endings.......2001-08-07

This is the most valuable book in my training library. It offers memorable and positive closures for any training. I recently used Name Tag Closure for a weekend long training. The participants loved it! As an added bonus, they told me it made a great icebreaker at the beginning of the training. This activity help them remain focused as they helped each other "find" the answer to their questions. It also worked as a great review at the end of a very long training.

5 out of 5 stars Improves Retention of Trained Material.......2000-09-29

Lynn Solem and Bob Pike teamed up to present 50 of the best closers they found and used in their Creative Training Techniques Workshops. Trainers looking for ways to end their sessions on a high note will find lots of opportunity lurking between the covers of this book.

Each activity is coded for its use in one or more of four categories: Review Content; Action Planning; Celebration; Motivation. The instructions for each activity are clearly laid out, listing the activity's Source, Objective, Class Length, Appropriate Audience, Group Size, Amount of Time to allow for the activity, Equipment required, and the activity Process.

I have used nearly half of these closers at one time or another, and each one has hit its mark--even when I have been afraid the activity was going south for a few minutes! The A to Z review is one of my favourites for coming back to a group after a lunch or evening break. Colored Dots is a splendid technique for giving the participants a chance to commit to using the learning points on the job. Consulting Envelopes works well for both review and real-world problem-solving, and after trying the Geometric Close about four weeks ago I cannot imagine why I did not use it earlier. Trainers looking for creative ways to have participants reviewing material--enthusiastically--will find this book a useful tool.

      Book Description

The Didache or The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, probably written before the end of the first century, purports to be an instruction based on sayings of the Lord and given by the Twelve Apostles to pagans who wished to become Christians.

The Epistle of Barnabas is a homily on the mistaken Judaistic conception of the Old Testament.

The Epistles consist of a covering note and a letter, which is an exhortation to the Philippians on Christian life in general. The Martyrdom of St. Polycarp is the story of this bishop of Smyrna's death at the hand of the Roman authorities in Asia for the defense of the Christian faith.

The Fragments of Papias. Papias, bishop of Hierapolis in Asia Minor, was the author of five books, entitled Exegesis of the Lord's Gospel.

The Epistle to Diognetus is an apology for Christianity, presented by an unknown writer to a pagan of high social or political rank.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very important text.......2007-04-10

I own many books from the "Ancient Christian Writers" series. I cannot think of a better edition of the Early Church Fathers out there. There may be cheaper collections, but these translations and notes are solid academically and theologically.

This specific volume, the Didache, is one of two volumes that come off my shelf most regularly. The Didache is essential reading for the Christian. For what little my opinion is worth, I believe that this little work is perhaps the most important early extra-biblical text there is.

This short work was written as a sort of pamphlet (or tract to use the modern jargon) designed to evangelize pagans. It begins with a bold statement. To paraphrase: "There are two ways, one of life and one of death." It then goes on to address the moral teachings of the Church.

After this opening section on Christian morality, there is a section on Christian worship, specifically regarding the Eucharistic celebration.

This text is VERY early, probably written around 90AD. As a believer, what is remarkable for me is the consistency with which the truth has been preached by the Church for 2000 years. Under the section "the way of life" we find the following instruction: "Do not kill a fetus by abortion." It would not be overstating the case to say that all John Paul II did with his pontificate is reiterate, in new and beautiful ways, the constant teaching of the Church, which has not changed drastically in 2000 years. Certainly the Didache, while a short easy read in pamphlet form, speaks volumes about Christian morality and the "culture of life" the successors of Peter would have us build.

This is a monumental (and short!) work that should be in the library of every serious Christian. It is impossible to see how one can advocate new and novel Christian "morality" in light of texts like the Didache, which so clearly point out the differences between Christian and Pagan thought, ethics, and morality.

5 out of 5 stars I Recommended People to read this Book.......2006-09-23

An edifying first century work, probably written or compiled somewhere between the last part of the first century and probably the first part of the second I like this version I Give this The Didache 5 star Good translation Like this book fantastic

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible First and Second Century Christian Literature.......2005-11-30

This handsome volume six of the Ancient Christian Writers series is one of the half dozen "must have" volumes (along with #1 - Clement and Ignatius, #55 - Ireneaus, #56 - Justin Martyr, and a few others). I have about two dozen of these great books. This particular volume was one of the ones edited by the legendary Patristic scholar Johannes Quasten (the translator, James Kliest) and contains "The Didache," or The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, "The Epistle of Barnabas," "The Epistles and Martyrdom of St. Polycarp," "The Fragments of Papias" and the "Epistle to Diognetus." Each work is prefaced by scholarly expository material. The translations are modern and annotated, and the endnotes provide a wealth of detailed study information.

"The Didache" (first to third century, AD) is a document discovered in the 19th century that solved many mysteries. A number of ancient Christian documents that appeared to have a common source appear to have that source in the Didache which probably has elements that were composed as early as the first century. This work purports to contain apostolic teachings for Christian living and worship procedures and includes specific instructions on baptism and the celebration of the Lord's Supper.

"Barnabas" (2nd century, AD) is an ancient Christian letter by an unknown yet probably authoritative author. It was held in very high regard by early Christianity and is an exhortation to persistence in the Christian way. It contains specific admonitions against "Judaizing," the major error of the writer's day and contrasts the Christian understanding of religious history with that of Judaism. This is polemical literature and must be read in that light.

The letters (one fragment and a second, fuller epistle) of Bishop Polycarp of Smyrna to the Philippians (about AD 135) is also an important early Christian document. Polycarp is believed to have been a disciple of St. John who lived to an old age before his martyrdom in the middle of the second century. This letter of his is a warm, fatherly letter to fellow Christians (similar to the spirit of Ignatius of Antioch) who were probably struggling with the doctrines of Marcion. Polycarp relies heavily on the writings of Paul and Peter as he exhorts his readers.

"The Martyrdom of Polycarp" is a mid-second century writing that purports to tell the story of how the beloved Polycarp died. The tension between the Christians and Jews of the day is described and there are mythic elements to the manner in which the fire consumes the holy man. With this writing, the cult of the martyrs begins in earnest as Christians begin to rely more on the memories of those who had died for the cause.

The "Fragments of Papias" (bishop of Hierapolis, disciple of John, friend of Polycarp) are taken from the writings of Irenaeus (late 2nd century) and Eusebius' "History of the Church" (early 4th century), and date to the middle of the 2nd century. Papias is highly esteemed as having experienced apostolic teaching. He is important for observing the importance of the "rule of faith" received authoritatively, in addition to sacred writings. His themes would be carried on by Irenaeus and others in succeeding generations.

Finally, the epistle of "Mathetes" (Greek for "Disciple") to "Diognetus" is Greek Christian apologetic material that attempts to convince a friendly pagan ("Diognetus") of the truth of the Christian way. This intelligent, moving letter probably dates from the 2nd century and refers to the growth of the Churches in spite of the martyrdoms that God is behind the young Christian movement.

These are necessary source documents for students of Christian history and doctrine and, in my opinion, can't be found in a more accessible yet scholarly English translation.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for an understanding of the Early Church........2000-08-03

In this volume four of the most important short sub-New Testament documents are collected together in a scholarly translation with copius notes. Of these, two (The Didache, and the Episle of Barnabas) were seriously considered by some of the Church Fathers to be on a par with the New Testament. In fact, The Didache may well have been written BEFORE some of the Canonical New Testament. In the "Fragments" we see probably the earliest testimony concerning the Apostolic origins of the Synoptic Gospels.

No scholar or student of the Early Church should be without many volumes of the Ancient Christian Writers series. Of this series, this is one of the most important titles.

      Book Description

First published in 1934, this book has enjoyed a reputation both as an authoritative guide to conduct in a contemporary maritime setting and a fascinating historical reference on the ways of the sea and sailor going back to the earliest days of sail. Now updated to cover all the sea services, this new edition fully reflects today's diverse force while at the same time exploring the maritime history of the United States, its flag, and the U.S. Navy's uniforms. A new chapter on naval ceremonies offers more details than ever on such events as award presentations and changes of command. A separate chapter on the popular "Dining In" ceremony explains its beginnings and evolution and tells how to plan and execute such an event. There is also greater coverage of Marine Corps and Coast Guard history and traditions. In addition to discussing the derivation of traditions and customs of the sea services, this latest update has been reorganized for ease of use by the professional seaman planning an upcoming event as well as the armchair sailor curious about the origins of naval customs and terms. It is the only up-to-date book on the subject available. 132 photographs. 6 x 9 inches.

5 out of 5 stars Navy custom explained.......2001-10-10

This book is clearly inteded as a manual for naval officers. I don't doubt that it would come in useful. It's a true treasure trove of information concerning US Navy custom and traditions. But the best part is the fact that it goes extensively into the backgrounds of many of the traditions and customs the Navy is steeped in. It is a scholorly book on history as much as it is about custom and tradition.

As a person who's not in the navy and just has an interest in it's history, this book was extremely entertaining and informative. If you're interested in such things, this book is defiantely worth a look.

      5 out of 5 stars Navy 101.......2001-01-22

This is an excellent source of knowledge with a wealth of information. If you want to know about the origins of Naval terms and how certain Naval traditions came about (ie..The Crossing of the Equator, Change of Command ceromonies) this book explains most of it. My only complaint is that it revolves around the officer community too much. I think it would have helped to add some more enlisted info too! So I highly reccomend this book! Fair Winds and Following Seas!

Excellent book. Filled with many little phrases and terms that are used and not understood, can now be explained. Covers how things started and what it was like before political correctness took over. Definitely a book to round out a collection on the Canadian Navy.

              5 out of 5 stars The Blackshoepirate.......2005-02-25

Michael Parenti does what so many of the popular liberal writers can not seem to do. He speaks directly to the common man. His prose and cadance are in tune with the way an average Joe like me thinks and uses the english language. In regards to this book, he has brought to life the reasons why a person from the blue collar ranks should begin to look again at the crap spewing out of the TV set. It is one thing to hear that Faux News is biased but another to read, in detail, how the entire mainestram media including the entertaining aspect is skewed towards the interest of the corporate conglomerates and not the interest of an average auto mechanic like myself.
This was the second 4th of Mr. Paranti's works that I read. By now I have read them all. I encourage you all to do the same.

              5 out of 5 stars must read.......2004-09-21

This another excellent book by Parenti. Parenti writes clearly, and concisely on this important matter of the media. He demonstrates through many studies the ways in which the media are manipluated to serve corporate interests and keep the public in the dark. I also highly recommend Democracy for the Few.

1 out of 5 stars The nature of propaganda.......2003-11-11

Parenti is an angry guy. Convinced that the American mass media is deliberately misleading the public in order to futher corporate and political interests, he has offered forth this treatise as a warning.

Some of Parenti's criticisms are valid, and much of the distortion he perceives is real, but we have to ask ourselves, how many times have we heard this before? I first encountered Parenti in college. His books were being "taught" in some of the mass communications courses. He is unapologetic in his Marxist sympathies, and seems to think that the press can, and should, exist as an instrument of a socialist state. That it is the duty of the media to inform the public.

Save for NPR and public television, the corporations which control American mass media have only one allegiance, and that is to the share holders. Market forces dictate how the press responds to world events. If people want conservative commentary like "The O'Reilly Factor", they will vote with their dollars. Likewise, if they want to read Parenti, they know where to find him. The idea that the press should be "objective" is naive.

Ultimately, Parenti's book degenerates into Chomsky-like conspiracy-theory hysterics. Fortunately for the public, his brand of Marxism is quickly becoming yesterday's news. And like Chomsky, Parenti finds it easier to write these unscholarly rants than to produce soemthing of substance. But the audience gets smaller everyday.

1 out of 5 stars Not the left that the country needs.......2003-01-21

I believe that the country needs a principled, decent left viewpoint which is accesible to most Americans. Parenti, however, is not this left commentator, and this book is evidence of how out of touch he is.

Parenti is no better than the conservatives who lionize Ronald Reagan and make apologies for anything that any Republican does. He uses all of the same tricks of far right but in service of the far left. And by far left, I mean the communist, paranoid, conspiracy-theory left.

Parenti, to put it bluntly, is an apologist for communism. If you read Parenti, you will be forced to believe that communist nations such as the old USSR were really workers' paradises and utopias of enlightened policy and good governance. He is happy to point out the excesses of right wing creeps such as Pinocchet and various US-supported dictators in Africa, but he refuses to see any flaws in such genocidal communist monsters as Stalin or Pol Pot. He glosses over the awful repression that these creeps foisted upon Jews, dissenters, intellectuals, the clergy, etc.

If we want to get beyond the tired left-right divide, we need writers who are willing to take on the icons of both the left and right and give credit to policies which work, regardless of the ideological source of those ideas. Parenti's most recent work, "To Kill a Nation", praises Milosevic!

No one who is not already a communist will be swayed by his arguments.

5 out of 5 stars A Tool that Can Change the World.......2003-01-09

The media is a weapon. And in order to exist safely in this world, people must be armed with the knowledge that Michael Parenti exposes in INVENTING REALITY. In a world where people are manipulated and miseducated by the news media, every high school student should have this book in his/her current events class. It is a powerful read with an excellent empirical background. Workers and intellectuals alike need such a book if they are ever to improve this world.

Most politically active environmentalists, writes the late biologist William Drury, have at least some knowledge of equilibrium theory, "the characteristic ecology taught in introductory textbooks" through which the so-called balance of nature is explained. Believing that this theory, if oversimplified, can lead to doctrinaire reactions (the view, for example, that human economic development is necessarily harmful to the environment), Drury proposes a more complex understanding of nature that takes into account chance and change, and that recognizes that "natural disturbance is too frequent for equilibrium models to be useful." Discussing notions such as microcosm versus macrocosm, the great chain of being, and succession, Drury offers a vigorous textbook that deepens our understanding of how the world works. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

The result of a lifetime in the field and in the classroom, Chance and Change challenges many of the tenets of establishment ecology. Charging that most of the environmental movement has ignored or rejected the changes in thinking that have infiltrated ecological theory since the mid 70s, William Drury presents a convincing case that disorder is what makes the natural world work, and that clinging to romantic notions of nature's grand design only saps the strength of the conservation movement. Drury's training in botany, geology, and zoology as well as his life-long devotion to work in the field gave him a depth and range of knowledge that few ecologists possess. This book opens our eyes to a new way of looking at the environment and forces us to think more deeply about nature and our role in it.
Chance and Change is intended for the serious amateur naturalist or professional conservationist. Drury argues that chance and change are the rule, that the future is as unpredictable to other organisms as it is to us, and that natural disturbance is too frequent for equilibrium models to be useful. He stresses the centrality of natural selection in explaining the meaning of biology and insists the book and the laboratory must be checked at all times against the real world. Written in an easy, personal style, Drury's narrative comes alive with the landscape--the salt marshes, dunes, seashores, and forests--that he believed served as the best classroom. His novel approach of correlating landscape evolution with ecological principles offers a welcome corrective to discordance between what we observe in nature and what theory tells us we should see.

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening critique of Clementsian ecology.......2000-11-13

This is an amazing work whose only fault is that it was not published by a larger house. Drury clearly outlines his argument against the commonly held notion of a balance of nature. He finds the idea of ecological communities succeeding to climax a distasteful one, and rightly so. Drury advocates actually thinking about problems rather than hiding behind an orthodoxy that seems to know all the answers.

He realizes that the world is a continually changing, dynamic place with an unpredictable quirkiness. It is not, as is so often assumed, a world where "ecosystems", left to their natural states, will go back to what they "ought" to be. He argues that we should conserve the world because we can, and not because of abstract notions of the intrinsic value of life. We want to save the world because we like critters, and we should fess up to it.

Drury was not a scheming wise-user, as may be inferred from his criticism of the environmentalist movement. He just wanted people to think about what they had learned about ecology in the century since Clements and Forbes.
