Book Description
J.A.S. Evans examines the reign of the great emperor Justinian (527-565) and his wife Theodora, who advanced from the theatre to the throne. He chronicles the origins of the split between East and West, the results of which are still with us. The book goes on to look at social structure of sixth-century Byzantium and the neighboring empires. It also covers Justinian's wars, which restored Italy, Africa and a part of SPain to the empire.

Book Description
In Turpin Times, Jim Turpin, the radio play-by-play voice of University of Illinois football and basketball for the past 40 years, takes readers behind the scenes for an intimate glimpse of players, coaches, and others associated with big-time intercollegiate athletics. Turpin follows the Illini through the 2001 football and 2001-2002 basketball seasons with flashbacks to other years, other teams, and other memories and stories that only an insider would know. Turpin's tenure with the Illini has spanned six basketball coaches, nine football coaches, eight Big 10 championships, 11 bowl games, 17 NCAA tournaments and three generations of Illinois fans. Read about Turpin's favorite players, many of whom were not headline makers; the coaches he liked best-and worst; his most memorable radio calls - not all were Illini victories. This is a rare opportunity to share Illini history with an announcer who has lived it.

where is sunny jim mckeen?.......2005-07-11
a fascinating and thorough reference book on child actors in hollywood's early days.i was just curious why "sunny jim"mckeen, who did the "newlywed"comedies in the 1920's playing"baby snookums"was not mentioned?he only lived to be 8 years old(dying in 1933 of blood poisoning)and was so famous at the time he even had a candy bar named after him. i hope someone one day does a book about the "newlywed"comedies and a bio of "sunny jim" included with it,and also universal, who owns the rights to the "newlywed" comedies of the 20's puts them one day on dvd, otherwise this is a fantastic book and i recommend it completely!!
Fasinating and eye opening!.......1999-09-16
Good reading, not just for film buffs only! Diana Serra Cary gives a rare, revealing glimpse into the world of children in show business.Although it's subject is early child film stars,it's message is very relevant to today's society as well.Well worth the effort!

Book Description
Today, sports' betting is a big industry for the bookmakers and race organisers. Of all the people who benefit from sports racing the "punters" (or in this case, you), are the last on the list of people who consistently gain.. In fact the greyhounds probably gain more from these races than most punters. Why is that? Well, there are many reasons but most of them centre on these two things: Lack of a proven system and Greed. This book closely examine these two points, and offers techniques and systems for achieving consistant wins.

NO EVENINGS???.......2005-08-23
FROM MY COPY I BET IN THE EVENING USING THE STOP AT THE FIRST WINNER TECHNIQUES. I FOUND THAT COMBING THEM WORKS WELL FO ME. THIS IS AN INTERESTING BOOK, EVEN WORKS FOR US NON COMPUTER LITERATES USING THE TELETEXT PAGES. ALTHOUGH IN THE BOOK I WAS ADVISED TO NOT BET ON THE EVEVINGS I HAVE NO CHOICE AS I WORK DURING THE DAYS AND SO ONLY HAVE THE EVENINGS. IF YOU BUY THIS BOOK MAKE SURE YOU READ IT THROUGH FIRST AS I FOUND I UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEMS BETTER AFTER I HAD DONE THIS. THE LAST REVIEWER IS RIGHT, THERE IS NO HISTORICAL DATA GIVEN BY THE AUTHOR TO PROVE HIS SYSTEMS. I TRIED THEM ON PAPER FOR A WEEK BEFORE STARTING TO USE REAL MONEY AS I WAS ALSO SCEPTICAL. AFTER A WEEK OF WATCHING THE SYSTEMS WINNING AGAIN AND AGAIN, I COUKLDNT STAND TO WAIT ANYMORE. I AM NOW USING CASH AND HAVING MORE FUN AS WELL AS COPPING NIGHTLY WINS IN MY COFFERS.
They work..........2005-08-19
Although not as exciting as his book on roullete which I am raving about. This greyhound book is fantastic too. It has many techniques that seem to work when I tried them. Made over £100 but returned to the roulette as was more exciting and took less time.
Gambling again.......2005-08-17
I always thought gambling was for mugs and that it was a mugs game as I have lost quite a bit in it before. However I am always opened minded. This book has new methods that have allowed me to end up on each day, quite a few in a row. This is the first time for me, so I am back gambling again, and winning this time.
New Angle on betting!!.......2005-08-16
I have read a few greyhound betting books, but never one like this one. It does not even pretend to mimic the popular topics. It breaks the mold and cuts out a whole new niche. If you are expecting to find out how to read form and pedigree of a greyhound in this book, you will be greatly dissappointed. I have tried the form and pedigree methods and systems and find I still depended mostly on luck. WIth this book the author side steps all that and introduces some new and exciting rules and techniques. He gives over 10 systems for betting on greyhound races. Australian gamblers will be out of luck, unless you have internet access, as all the systems in this book, as far as I can see are based on the 6 trap race meetings found in the UK, and South Africa etc.. Whilst I havent tried and tested all these new techniques out personally, the few I have had time to try have worked for me and in a funny way make sense to me, statistically. This is a great book for people who are fed up of the old techniques and want something new, fresh, exciting and successful. The book may not be for everyone, especially if you find it hard to use the internet, or you are set in your old ways.
This book does not deliver what it promises.......2005-08-12
The methods described in this book are at best statistically unsound. I would have no hesitation is recommending that the aspiring greyhound investor look elsewhere

Didn't find anything that was useful or particularly interesting.......2007-03-20
I had high hopes for this book what with Dr. Allen's apparent endorsement and Jay Cross writing a positive review of it. I found the book dry and boring. I started each chapter with the hope that it would reveal something useful that could be readily applied, but each chapter ended flat. I found a great deal of wisdom in Dr Allen's books. I was hoping that this book might give me somewhat of a different perspective that would expand upon (and even disagree with) the instructional design perspective in Dr Allen's books. Instead it caused me to want to go back and re-read Dr Allen's books to see if my present experience level would cause me to find new meaning. (Micheal Allen's Guide to E-Learning and Creating Successful e-learning)
I give this book 2 stars because Clark Quinn does include some examples. I think that this book would have been far more worthwhile if it was written around these examples. I would have liked to see him explain an idea and then really delve into how he applied that idea in the examples he shows in the book. Instead the examples seem somewhat removed from what the author is primarily saying in each chapter.
good but very basic.......2007-03-14
a very basic overview fo the situation; does not include major players like BTS, SMG, Real Learning that are the worlds number 1 in simulation these days from invoicing and development of simulations.
Engaging what?.......2007-02-15
I have yet to finish this book; however, for the portions I have already read, I am not impressed. To begin, his expanded usage of the English language is unnecessary for the simplicity of his context. He also has multiple run on sentences that can be as long as 64 words! Also, "his" concepts are more or less variances of colorations of others theory's. The first half of the book is lofty, very wordy and lacking clear definitions. Perhaps this may be a test to see if I can Engage in learning.
Also to gain my credit I am a student of new media including Flash and have read multiple books based on learning through interactivity.
Hard Fun!.......2005-07-04
I will be brief. That's the way you feel when you're engaged in an eLearning Simulation Game. You get swept up in it. You're turned on. You block out life's static in order to reach your goal. Clark's book is like that. BUY THIS BOOK!
excellent.......2005-05-29
I've known and worked with Clark Quinn for several years. He's written a very good book. Like the e-learning it advocates, Engaging Learning is fun, accessible and, well, engaging. Working from a solid theoretical framework, Clark explains why learning should be "hard fun" and then shows how to create that kind of e-learning. He includes several detailed case studies. As someone who develops e-learning for a living, I appreciated his pragmatic approach and acknowledgement that e-learning can be developed at different levels of engagement, depending on budget, schedule, quality of source material, etc.
What really shines through, though, is Clark's passion for incorporating simulations and gaming techniques into e-learning. If you read this book and some of that rubs off, you will develop better e-learning.
Book Description
More than any other world leader in recent times, George W. Bush is a man of faithâ¦a conservative Christian who has brought the power of prayer and the search for God's will into the Oval Office. His faith has proven to be a bedrock of strength and resolve during two of the most tumultuous years in our nation's history. According to
Newsweek magazine, "This presidency is the most resolutely faith based in modern times. An enterprise founded, supported and guided by trust in the temporal and spiritual power of God." David Aikman, skilled journalist and former senior correspondent for
TIME magazine, pens this dramatic and gripping account of Bush's journey to faith. Based on interviews and behind-the-scenes stories, you'll learn howâ¦
- His life changed after a conversation with Billy Graham on the beach at Kennebunkport
- He walked away from alcoholism toward a new destiny
- The events following 9/11 caused many to view him as God's chosen man for this critical time in history
- His decision to go to war with Iraq became the ultimate test of his faith
A Man of Faithâ¦an intimate look at how Bush's spiritual life has impacted his presidency, the nation, and the world.
Customer Reviews:
President Bush: A great man of faith and a great President.......2007-02-26
I guess I am the only one that has actually read this book and the Bible. An unnecessary war? Maybe these people have been hiding under a rock. Or maybe they are just liberals that love to act like they have faith until they open their mouths and it becomes obvious they have no idea what they are talking about. Anyway, if you are a "true" Christian that actually reads and understands your Bible, you will enjoy this book. Thank God for President Bush. A great man of convictions, values, and morals. The rest of you - well you are cowardly traitors.
NOT ALL WHO CRY LORD LORD SHALL ENTER THE KINGDOM.......2006-10-24
A man of faith with the faith unspecified.
Back in the 1800's when his folks were in politics, they firmly believed the wrong side won the AMerican REvolution.
This book, written by a subject of the British throne reveals why Bush once again places us as peons and mercenaries for the british imperial crown.
Back in the 1800's the bush family joined Cotton MAther of Yale in burning landowners as witches in order to steal their profitable farms.
Now he demonizes the IRaqi nation and kills an estimated million of them to steal their oil fields
Nothing new under the sun. Only do not call it faith
FAith in the gun, maybe.
Saint JAmes writes even the devil believes in God and shudders in fear.
Faith without good works is nothing.
By their fruits will you know them.
Bush's fruits stink to high heaven.
For a faith with good works read a theologian like the REverend Father John Dear's Jesus the rebel, and learn why every Christian faithful and true must firmly oppose George W Bush.
By the way, this piece of partisan politicizing which helped steal our 2004 elections by deceiving countless well-intended but eagerly gullible people is now going for fourteen cents.
Bush has strong faith.......2006-05-04
in the right of the rich to get richer, while the poor get poorer and the middle class treads water. Re his targeted tax cuts: 53 per cent to the wealthiest 2 percent.
in the importance of corporate welfare. Heavy tax subsidies for the energy industry and no bulk purchasing of meds for the elderly. Bulk purchasing would decrease the cost for the elderly, but drive down profits for big pharma.
in the exemption of himself from the commandment not to bear false witness. Every time Bush calls the war in Iraq part of the war against terror he lies. Even he has admitted there were no connections between Saddam and 9/11.
Bush's stance on conservation (relaxed controls of air and water pollution) is also at odds with the biblical teaching that God has made us stewards of the earth.
Measured against the teachings of Jesus, Bush's faith amounts to empty words for photo ops. One can cry, "Lord, lord" and not please the Lord. Jesus had a word for those whose deeds are empty of the faith they profess: hypocrites.
Useful corrections to the errors in this book are to be found in Kevin Phillips, American Theocracy and Bruce Bartlett, Impostor. Even better correctives are to found in the gospels: Bush approves of torture, capital punishment, and the amassing of wealth. All things that Jesus despised.
Hmmm.......2006-04-20
Who would Jesus bomb? Who shall we bomb next in the name of Jesus?
A man of faith? FAITH??? .......2006-04-14
Judging by the pathetic mess George W. Bush has made of the USA and Iraq during the last five years, the masses of people he's killed through his phony wars, and the negative feelings he's engendered in so many countries around the world, one has to wonder WHAT exactly IS his "faith"? Surely it isn't Christianity...anyone with half a brain who knows anything about Jesus' message (non-violence and tolerance, for those without a clue) can see that Bush has violated nearly every tenet of Christianity during his life and especially during his "presidency".
What IS Bush's "faith" exactly? It's his faith in his own self-righteousness...faith in his corporate buddies to bail him out of any hole he digs for himself...faith in the ignorance of so many so-called "Christian" folk to support his ignorant, misguided leadership. That's what Bush's "faith" is. It sure ain't in the actions and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Faith Beyond Belief is a testimony of the unquestioned, personal faith of David Eberly, the senior allied prisoner of the Gulf War. Together, we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, and ultimately, share his journey to freedom.

An incredible story of faith and courage under fire!!.......2004-03-12
I couldn't put this inspiring and powerful book down! If you only read one non-fiction book this year let it be this one; it is such a powerful testimony of faith and hope in spite of terrible odds.
Good guys DO win!.......2002-09-26
A great book of courage and inspiration. One of those hard to put down books. From the Christian Iraqi guard Col Ebberly met while a POW to the narrow escape from a coalition bombing raid, this book will have you realizing that divine guidance and intervention can and do happen in the darkest of circumstances.
Outstanding faith primer.......2002-07-01
Outstanding. This is a book for anyone dealing with troubled times in their life. What an inspiration!
The true story of Gulf War veteran David Eberly.......2002-04-10
Faith Beyond Belief is the true story of Gulf War veteran David Eberly. Written in his own words, Eberly survived being shot down in the Iraqi desert and after being captured was to spend forty-three days in the prison cells of Baghdad. A story of faith as well as the struggle for survival, penned by a deeply religious soldier who trusted in God to care for his soul, Faith Beyond Belief is singularly powerful reading and highly recommended for military buffs with an interest in the Gulf War, as well as anyone having to cope with life's manifold challenges and adversities.
Book Description
From the vantage point of a new century, twentieth-century philosophy in the Western world can be grouped according to four main trends: Marxism, Anglo-American analytic philosophy, American pragmatism, and continental philosophy. Rockmore evaluates the different strands of these discussions and analyzes their origins, arguing that they all evolved in reaction to Kant 's fascinating and demanding philosophy.Assuming that the history of philosophy, and philosophy itself, are continuous, Rockmore evaluates the extent to which the debate served to move the issues forward, and provides an intriguing assessment of the accomplishments of twentieth-century philosophy. Intended for readers with little background in philosophy, this volume provides a sense of the main thinkers and problems, and of the nature of the debates in a tumultuous time.
Book Description
"The natural world is a lot like a game of musical chairs," observes Pete Dunne. "Everywhere you turn, everywhere you go, there are places where living things sit down, niches that support their specific needs. But just as in musical chairs, there aren't enough places to go around. Our species keeps removing them--forcing other creatures to leave the game." In these twenty-nine essays, one of America's top nature writers trains his sights on the beauties and the vulnerabilities of the natural world. Writing to infuse others with a sense of the richness and diversity that nature holds, Pete Dunne ranges over topics from the wonder of the year's first snowfall to the lost art of stargazing to the mysterious forces that impel people to hunt--and not to hunt. Running like a thread through all the essays is Dunne's desire to preserve all that is "natural" in nature, to stop our unthinking destruction of wild places and wild creatures before we humans find ourselves with "the last chair, in an empty room" on an impoverished earth.
Customer Reviews:
Nature prose at its finest.......2000-07-12
Pete Dunne is perhaps the pre-eminent nature writer today, and before the echo does nothing to disappoint those who have discovered his flowing prose. "Before The Echo" is an intimate portrait of various facets of the natural world in tightly worded essays. The book is a delight to read and it makes you want to go outside and look for the beauty that Dunne conveys so eloquently. I think this is what Pete had in mind.
