Book Description
In the well-entrenched critical view of the Jacobean period, James I is credited with the flowering of culture in the early years of the seventeenth century. His queen, Anna of Denmark, is seen as a shadowy figure at best, a capricious and shallow one at worst. But Leeds Barroll makes a well-documented case that it was Anna who, for her own purposes, developed an alternative court and sponsored many of the other artistic ventures in one of the most productive and innovative periods of English cultural history.
Married at seventeen, Anna soon became a shrewd and powerful player in the court politics of Scotland and, later, England. Her influence can be seen in James's choices for advisors and beneficiaries of royal attention. In fact, James's and Anna's longstanding dispute over the raising of the heir, Henry, caused a major scandal of the time and was suspected as a plot against the king's safety. In order to assert her own power, Anna actually forced a miscarriage upon herself, an extraordinary event that is referred to in much unnoticed contemporary diplomatic correspondence.
An important feature of court entertainment and literary production at this time was the development of the extravagant drama known as the masque, which reached its literary peak in the works of Ben Jonson and Inigo Jones. Barroll argues that it was in fact Anna and not James who encouraged and staged the masques, as a way of defining both a social and political identity for the royal consort, a role that had been nonexistent under Elizabeth. Barroll's work on Anna's patronage also sets Shakespeare's company in a broader context. By writing the cultural biography of Anna of Denmark, queen of England, Leeds Barroll reestablishes the influential and distinctive role of the queen consort in early modern Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Dry.......2003-02-24
I almost gave it 2 stars but decided in all fairness it did deserve 3. After all the reason I didn't like the book is that it was very dry, a lot of facts, and Anne isn't mentioned in ways that allow you to get a lot of info on her, as herself.
However, it DOES say it's a cultural biography so my disappointment is my own fault.
I wouldn't reccomend it for anyone looking for a biography or for light reading. However if your looking for info on Anne, you'll have to make do since there are very few other resources on her.
An interesting essay.......2002-03-26
A biography of Anne of Denmark, wife of King James VI of Scotland and I of England, is hard to come by. Those who read this book expecting a conventional biography might well be disappointed.
The author points out, however, that this is not intended to be a biography, but a "cultural biography." What this amounts to is an extended essay arguing that Anne, far from being the shallow and flighty woman described by most historians, was actually an intelligent, ambitious woman determined to make her mark on the politics and the culture of her day. It is an interesting argument, if not an entirely convincing one.
Some of the arguments fall flat, such as the author's insistence that the hysterical temper tantrum that triggered a life-threatening miscarriage was an example of the queen's resolve and power. Despite the occasional jarring note, an interesting pattern does emerge, revealing Anne as something more than the frivolous queen who glorified herself with extravagent masques (allegorical plays with elaborate costumes, scenery, music and dancing.) Despite the stated focus on the "cultural biography," what I found most interesting was the political turmoil Anne managed to create during her years in Scotland.
The author makes extensive use of primary sources in the 170 page essay. The notes are interesting, but for some reason, the author declined to include a bibliography. Some might find the frequent intrusion of the author's voice to be irritating. Observations such as these abound: "I have saved for this final chapter..."; "I will be arguing..."; "It is apparent to me that..." But since this is consistent with the author's style and stated purpose, this pattern is easier to overlook than it would have been in a conventional biography.
Recommended for serious students of Jacobean history and culture.

Biography of the Rocket, social history of Quebec in one.......2003-03-08
I actually bought this book in Canada in paperback form, and I am seriously impressed with Roch Carrier's storytelling ability. Having only read The Hockey Sweater, I expected a fantastic story in this book, and it does not disappoint. In Our Life with the Rocket, Carrier writes a biography of Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, one of the greatest hockey players of the last century, or some would say ever, by placing this French-Canadian hero in the context of the province's history. Carrier describes the poverty and hopelessness of the Great Depression in Quebec with vivid detail, telling how young Maurice would run errands for neighbors to earn cash when he wasn't playing street hockey. The hard work Richard put into developing as a hockey player and his career in the NHL, including the famous Richard Riots of the 1954 season, are told with great care. The connection between the Rocket and his legions of Quebecois fans, young and old, is evident. Carrier himself interjects memories of growing up in Quebec worshipping the Rocket, stopping short of completely retelling the autobiographical story related in The Hockey Sweater. He tells how Richard continued to mean a great deal to him as an adult. If the adult reader is a fan of the story of The Hockey Sweater, this book is a perfect companion to it, more fully explaining the significance of Maurice Richard to young French Canadian boys in a time when Quebec had little else to cheer about. I am seriously considering using this in a course I teach.

Book Description
626 by 9 is a goal-by-goal chronicle in pictures, stats, and stories celebrating the remarkable career of Maurice "The Rocket" Richard. For 18 seasons, the Montreal Canadien in sweater number 9 dominated the sport, chalking up 626 career goals. The book is amply illustrated with pictures of The Rocket in action, the sticks he used to score the milestones, and the awards and trophies he won for setting record after scoring record. Other images of items and events in Richard's life hint at how important he was not only to hockey but also to Canada's history and sense of itself.

The Open-Book Management Field Book
ASIN: 0887308023 |
Book Description
"Read even the first chapter of this extraordinary book and you'll find yourself cheering, screaming, jumping up and down with excitement. The companies described in this book are decades ahead of the reengineers -- and you don't need to be a Bill Gates or a Jack Welch to put their ideas into practice today." -- George Gendron, editor in chief, Inc.
"Companies that practice open-book management seem to have captured some sort of lightning in a bottle." -- Chris Lee, Training
"This book should be required reading in corporate America." -- Chicago Tribune
"If you want to give your preconceived notions a good kick in the you-know-where, give Case the opportunity to articulate the merits of open-book management." -- Entrepreneur
Open-book management is not so much a technique as a way of thinking, a process that actively involves employees in the financial life of the company. Numerous companies have already found that employees who are informed and aware of the company's financial situation are motivated to seek solutions to problems and assume a greater degree of responsibility for its performance. John Case begins by examining the current competitive climate and the history of established management techniques. He shows how the traditional treatment of workers as "hired hands" with little involvement or responsibility beyond their own area is no longer effective in today's ever more competitive global environment.
Case clearly and carefully explains the principles of open-book management: timely sharing of crucial financial information with employees; educating the employees to understand and apply the information; empowering employees to apply the information to their own work; and offering employees a stake in the successful implementation of their ideas. Open-book management will take different forms at every company, Case notes, but he offers a wide range of suggestions and guidelines for implementing these principles. He concludes with a series of in-depth case studies, featuring companies of various sizes and financial situations that have successfully implemented open-book management. Open-Book Management is the indispensable guide to teaching employees how to think and act like owners.
Customer Reviews:
This is THE KEY to successful management!.......2004-03-01
What do TQM, reengineering, empowerment, teaming, and even six sigma have in common? They all implement parts of open-book management. And that's the reason they all have spotty records- they were successful when they, accidentally, incorporated enough of the rest of open-book management.
The principle here is very simple- instead of your company or division relying on only the handful of minds at the top of the organization to improve the company, it treats all the employees as adults with brains and encourages everyone to work for the company's benefit. This also has the effect of reducing or eliminating office politics since everyone's pulling in the same direction.
How? Fortunately the process is pretty simple, though it needs to be tailored to each business. The pieces are:
1. Giving employees all relevant financial information,
2. Giving employees training to understand the financial information,
3. Giving employees appropriate responsibility for the numbers under their control, and
4. Giving employees appropriate stakes in the outcomes (through bonuses, stock, options, etc.).
It's Here...It's Now...It's Happening.......2000-01-13
When Open-Book Management was first in 1995, its subtitle suggested "The Coming Business Revolution." Well, that "revolution" has arrived and author John Case deserves much of the credit. In the Introduction, however, he makes it crystal clear that open-book management is NOT a panacea, is NOT a substitute for TQM or reengineering or any other operational overhaul, and is NOT a single system. In essence, open-book management helps companies to create a shared environment in which everyone understands that they are competing in a marketplace, trying to make money. But for whom? Frequently, effective ownership has been limited to relatively few people. In privately-held companies, usually to a single person and/or to a family. Presumably Case agrees with Al Ehrbar (author of EVA) that the traditional concept of "ownership" must be re-defined so that everyone involved in a given enterprise assumes personal responsibility for adding value. Hence the importance of recognition of peak performance but also the importance of financial incentives. "What's in it for me?" is a quite legitimate question. Given the increasingly greater impact of globalization, the information revolution, and what Case calls "entrepreneuralization", companies must find new and better ways to answer that question. For Case, each company needs a mission, a strategy. "But more than anything else it needs eager, willing employees, people who have a reason to care about their employer's prosperity and who know how to help it succeed."
Ultimately, the measurable value of open-book principles will be determined by several factors: The extent to which a company modifies them to accommodate its own circumstances; the extent to which employees in that company (top to bottom) commit to the program, once devised; and the extent to which everyone involved shares equitably (NOT equally) in the rewards.
Those who admire this book as much as I do will presumably want to read (if they have not already read) The Open-Book Field Book and The Open-Book Experience. These two books develop in much greater detail the material first introduced in Open-Book Management. Also, they provide an absolutely essential guide to deriving maximum benefit from John Case's wisdom and experience.
Employees at open book companies act (and profit)like owners.......1996-06-30
Case shows, with many examples from open book companies, that companies' performance really takes off (or pulls out of jeopardy) when they organize to:
1. Give all their financial information to all employees;
2. Teach employees to understand it; and
3. Give employees a financial stake in how the company performs.
In summary, experience shows that employees at open book companies act like owners. Case shows exactly how to do it.
Give this book to your boss!

Customer Reviews:
A BRIEF NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR/COMPILER.......2006-10-20
Greetings. May I congratulate you for finding your way to this book and to these few words.
This title, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, if from one of my favorite Cash-penned songs and the book was/is published by a very small mom/pop outfit in Nashville. They (the publisher) have no promotion or marketing or publicity savy, to speak of when promoting a book like this, so it has just layed here in obscurity.
This book, although it contains the input of over forty close Cash associates and a foreword by the Grahams (Ruth and Rev. Billy), has NEVER been reviewed by any press. In fact, the Nashville media didn't even give it one line. Small publishers suffer this snub, and in the end, so did this tribute book. Lost in the larger shuffle of all things Johnny Cash.
The only folks that know about this book are folks like you, that have searched, surfed and stumbled across it or maybe found it after hearing about it word-of-mouth.
To the point, if you get this book, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, and are not moved by it, touched by it, or feel it is more than worth the price, I will personally refund your purchase price. (hughwaddell@comcast.net)
Yes, I believe in this book with all my heart and soul!!!! In the few interviews about the book that happened last year (2005), I stated the same challenge, and have not been asked to refund one dime, yet. In spite of all the review snubs, the book stands on its own simple merit.
So screw the tiny publisher, the snubby-dub media and the self-serving Nashville "pompasses". This book does not need to be hyped or pumped by critics, anyway. I swear to you that you will enjoy this look at Johnny the Cash through the eyes and hearts of people who knew him best... his friends and family.
Thank you and God Bless!
The Johnny Cash few of us ever had the privilege to know........2006-04-15
All of us who followed the music and life of Johnny Cash;knew from the beginning of his musical career in the laste 50's that there was something special about this man. He came to most of us by his music and shows but we always knew he was a man who first of all knew and loved his God. The name Pilgrim was often associated with him;but the name Disciple would be just as fitting. I have followed ,listened to and read about him for about 50 years, but I can honestly say that the real truth about what Johnny Cash was really like is not any better shown than in this book. How he was seen and loved by those who really knew him, loved him, worked with him, family members, and people who considered him a friend and at the same time he considered a friend. Over 40 people got the honor to say what Johnny meant to them and what kind of a man and friend he was. One thing that is obvious from reading this book of over 300 pages and over 40 people,is that there must be thousands of others that knew him as well and if they had the same opportunity would have similar things to say.
It is so obvious Johnny loved life ,how much his family meant to him,and how much he respected those around the music business. If anyone in the public arena ever gave the impression that as he journeyed throuh life;his friend and Savior Jesus Christ was always by his side;it had to be him.
Millions of us admired Cash;but what a privilege it must have been to have been close to him. No wonder a great personal loss is seen in the stories each participant has to tell.
As we continue to listen to his music;this book will remind us what a Legend "The Man in Black" really was.
I am sure that when he finally met his God,he probably said something like;"Thanks Lord, for the privilege to have served you and my fellow man.I did the best I could ,and it's good to be home with you"
After you read this book, why not sit down and think or write about what Johnny Cash meant to you.
Everyday People write about the Everyday Man.......2005-12-01
OK, with all the hype about the movie, Walk the Line, and living in Nashville as I do...and hearing Johnny Cash's name everywhere you turn...I hesitated going to see the movie "just because". Well. I somehow ended up seeing it, (long story for another day.) And let me just say that much to my chagrin, I LOVED the movie. So now I've been on a Johnny Cash rampage, listening, watching, and reading everything I can get my hands on. Yes, I succumbed. Call me weak.
This title looked interesting to me because it's written by people who knew him on a day to day basis. There's a chapter written by the guy who kept his farm, for gosh sakes! You just feel the love seeping from the pages. I wept, I laughed, I've read it again, and again.
For readers who might be wondering what all the shoe size business is about here in the reviews (I know I wondered before receiving the book)...Hugh says in the book that Johnny always said he had "itchy feet". He always needed to be doing something and going somewhere different. Johnny said "Everyone has itchy feet, some just itch more than others." So at the beginning of everyone's chapter is that person's shoe size. Just one more quirky little reason why this book has earned a place on my 'favorites' shelf.
As a Nashvillian, I would like to say: We are proud of our 'Cash heritage' and this book lays it all on the line.
Thank you, Hugh Waddell for such a wonderful gift that I'm sure even JRC's family will treasure for years and years.

The most compelling Cash book I have ever read.......2005-03-27
How do you come up with a way to tell the Johnny Cash Story that hasn't yet been done? There are countless biographies out there (disclosure: I have consulted, resourced and been interviewed on many), and the mythic history of this great man has been told many ways. But Hugh Waddell, JRC's friend and confidant of longstanding, has produced THE definitive portrait. He did it not by another retelling of the great Redemption story of our times (although that never gets old), or by a mere chronicle of John's achievements. Instead, he spectacularly tells the story through the eyes of John's family, friends, colleagues and fans. He wisely, and accurately, realized that it was John's effect on others which made him Mt. Rushmore-worthy. His life and music spoke to us, for us and with us, and the impact he made on people great and small continues to take the breath away. Johnny Cash walked with presidents (they fawned over him) and he sat with the people (who worshipped him). Hugh Waddell captures the qualities which allowed this by pointing the camera not at John, but at those he touched. The lens is reversed, and we see The Great Cash as a father, a farmer, a friend. His importance is told through the countless small interactions, the kindnesses and generosity, the human fraility and the soaring triumphs. He gave voice to our dreams and aspirations, taught us what it was like to run the mortal race, to fall greatly and rise back up greater. In these touching stories we see the real man, but more, we see ourselves. I did not want this book to end. The real people and their real stories about a real man are gripping. Johnny Cash was a giant, obviously. In this superb book we get to see how giants get that way. If I want someone to know what Johnny Cash was like, I give them this book.

Essential Johnny Cash.......2005-03-15
If you're a Johnny Cash fan, a country music historian, a lover of Southern literature, or someone who just likes a great read, you'll love this book. Hugh Waddell has hit upon a brilliant biographical device. Instead of an anthology of recollections by Johnny Cash's peers in the entertainment world, this book is a compilation of reminiscences from plain folks, family members, business and music friends, who knew him close-up and personal.
Their insights and their informal photographs and private handwritten correspondences add much to the expanding canon of biographical works devoted to Johnny Cash.

Though Provoking Compilation of Personal Military Records.......2000-03-28
In essence, as Brown states in his preface, the Imperial War Museum is the author of this thought provoking compilation of moving textual and stunning visual records of the First World War, 1914-1918. The Museum was established in the wake of the greatest conflagration the world had ever known and has an almost inexhaustable reserve of pictures, posters, postcards, photographs, films, pamphlets, books, diaries, letters, and documents detailing the massive British effort to fight and win 'the war to end all wars.' The author does not attempt to present a comprehensive study but rather one that naturally leans towards areas in which the Museum's holdings are rich. Thus, the British role on the Western Front is emphasized although other wartime operations such as Gallipoli, Salonika, and the Middle East are not ignored. While the war was highly political and technological, the focus of this book is on the personal and the particular. The subject matter is not war so much as people caught up in war and the author clearly intends to provide a fresh look at the First World War which is as precise and objective as possible yet spiritually enriching and in context to current events. Strong editorialship is utilized to weave together personal profiles and special features with linking narrative prose which is clearly written and assimilated. In these pages great political and military figures such as David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, and Douglas Haig appear remote and somewhat dehumanized rather than the masses of individual participants as is usually the case. For example, the reader is shocked but ultimately relieved at the situation of W.H. Wykeham-Musgrave, Royal Navy, who was torpedoed three times on the same day as the armored cruisers HMS ABOUKIR, HOGUE, and CRESSY were sunk by a single German U-boat on 22 September 1914. There is also ample evidence of the largely unheralded efforts of women in the munitions factories and in military support services such as nursing and transportation. Contemporary humor remains relevant especially in regard to the contrasting abysmal conditions in the trenches and the more comfortable home fires. In one military paper a woman asks a soldier "What struck you most about the Ypres battle?" to which he replies "Shrapnel, lady." (p. 265). Finally, the book concludes with the disillusioned observations of one soldier who argues that "the old order had changed; the genteel of 1914 were gone; blatent riches reigned in their stead; money was the power in the land; money that had been reaped from the bodies of the dead. This was victory. The war to end war" (p. 282). Such a loss of idealism in the aftermath of this cataclysmic horror became the zeitgeist for an entire 'lost generation' and is well represented in this book and masterfully communicated to the reader.

Book Description
Larry Tramutola is responsible for 34% of the bonds passed by California voters since 1988. In Tramutola's new book, Sidewalk Strategies: Seven Winning Steps for Candidates, Causes and Communities, he reveals the secrets of his success and teaches readers about winningwinning elections, winning campaigns, and most importantly, strategies for making a difference within your own community.
The book will speak differently to each reader, convincing the cynic that the political system really can work, offering candidates the tickets for political success, and inspiring students to pursue the causes they believe in. In language that sparkles with knowledge and enthusiasm, Tramutola teaches readers how to define their commitments, overcome their fears, and maintain their sincerity.
Each of the book's seven sections explains one of Tramutola's sidewalk strategies. Each section then has three or four chapters, with titles such as, "Why do you want to win?" "Learn by keeping your mouth shut," and "Finding and keeping good staff." But Tramutola effectively keeps Sidewalk Strategies from falling victim to the `how-to' genre by engaging and entertaining the reader with anecdotes from his own experiences. Readers will benefit from the time Tramutola spent with his mentor, Fred Ross, Sr., and the UFW, as well as organizing local, state, and national campaigns. In short, Sidewalk Strategies personalizes politics.

In Sidewalk Strategies, Tramutola offers solutions and strategies for the first time candidate or community effort. Sidewalk Strategies.......2004-04-23
Sidewalk Strategies is a fabulous read that provides a common sense approach to Tram's secrets to success. His advice and examples illustrate the real world of campaigns, elected office and public service. I would highly recommend it to anyone thinking about running for elected office or participating in the campaign/issue process.
I loved this book.......2004-04-03
This is a great book for those that want to organize political or other campaigns on the local level. It stresses political organizing the old fashioned way--getting people involved at the grassroots level to bring about change. It uses the principles of community organizing developed by Fred Ross and implemented by Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers. The author, trained under both, is a very successful political campaign organizer who has refined these people-to-people campaign techniques for today's campaigns.
Tramutola gives the recipe for political success!.......2004-01-19
Larry Tramutola puts his years of experience into print. If you are interested in running for office, raising money via parcel taxes or bond measures for libraries, schools or hospitals, this is the road map. Tramutola knows what it takes to win! On election day, you want Tramutola's strategy behind you or you will be wishing you did!

Book Description
Spirit of the Environment brings spiritual and religious concerns to environmental issues. Providing a much needed alternative to exploring human beings' relationship to the natural world through the restrictive lenses of science, ecology, or even morality, this book offers a fresh perspective to the field. The book addresses a variety of issues, including: the environmental attitudes of major religions; the relationship between art and nature; the Gaia hypothesis; and the non-instrumental values which have inspired environmental concerns. This is a vital collection for those eager to examine the relationship between the spiritual and the environment.
