      Book Description

The inspiring story of an ordinary man who, from humble beginnings and against the odds of a devastating illness, has led—is leading—an extraordinary life.

To many people, Walter Gretzky is the ultimate dad, the father of the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, and the first inspired coach to a talented young boy. Walter’s major insight into hockey—that a player should “go where the puck is going”—guided Wayne’s brilliant style, and Wayne himself has said about his talent: “It’s God-given. It’s Wally-given.” It’s safe to say that no other famous hockey player’s father is held in such high esteem, and that Walter Gretzky has carved out this singular niche in his own right.

Now, for the first time, Walter tells at length the story of his life, about growing up on a small family farm, about meeting and marrying Phyllis, about raising four boys and a girl in a modest home in Brantford on the salary of a telephone repairman, about hanging onto his modesty and values when the comet of talent and celebrity hit.

Walter also talks about the process of recovering from a stroke that came close to killing him ten years ago. Through his own grit and determination, and with the help of dedicated therapists and doctors, his family and friends, Walter battled back from an aneurysm that left him with many cognitive difficulties and destroyed a decade of memories—including his recollection of the death of his mother and almost all of Wayne’s NHL triumphs of the eighties.

As many of the people who have encountered Walter even briefly will testify, he is very charismatic, and it’s his extraordinary compassion, which has flourished since his stroke, that makes him so compelling. Yes, he struggles with some limitations, but he has also discovered a calling in helping others. All of his many public speaking engagements are for charity, and this book would not exist were it not for Walter’s role as the official spokesperson for Canada’s Heart and Stroke Foundation. The only way he would ever agree to talk about himself at such length was in the hope that his experience with stroke would be useful to other people. “Every second of every day is important to me,” he writes, “and I only hope that if telling my story can help even one person, then all of this will be worth it. And remember, there is life after stroke…look at me!”

      4 out of 5 stars a great story of a great man.......2007-01-07

The Great One may be great, but after reading this book I realize that there might be something like The Great Two. If you want to know more about Wayne's hockey life, this is not the book you are looking for. But if you want to know more about Wayne's roots that made him the man he is today, buy this book. And if you find out where you can find the seats made out of hockey sticks, give me a call.

This book is by far one of the best books of poetry I have had the pleasure of reading. Recommended to anyone that not only love's poetry but are interested in enter deeper into the mind of Jim Morrison.

5 out of 5 stars I AM IN LOVE WITH JIM!.......2007-02-18

Jim Morrison is my favorite artist, idol, poet, male, and anything else. He is such an amazing person and his art is truly appreciated. Not only was he hot and sexy-he can actally write! Enclosed are his lyrics and deep emotions-a great read with a bunch of friends by a fire at night. You will love all these poems and the photos of the amazing beast himself-Jim Morrison himself revealed.

5 out of 5 stars Strangely beautiful and mesmerizing...hypnotic.......2005-10-15

I love this book and you don't have to be a lover of poetry to admire and appreciate the poems contained in this book. Jim Morrison was a man who was deeply committed to his art. As the lead singer and lyricist of The Doors (one of the greatest rock bands of all time) he took special care that his lyrics as well as his poems aim to release people from the constraints of what is normal and that we as people should follow our own destiny and draw our own conclusions and live our life the way that we want it. Jim Morrison was a tortured, confused and misunderstood soul but nevertheless a genius. An enigma and legend that will live on forever. The lizard king, the electric poet cannot and will not be silenced ever... as long as his music and poetry continues to thrive in all who appreciate and love his unique and captavating artistry. Get this book and you will not disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing , Magical, Mystical Poetry.......2005-07-11

Jim Morrison was a poet far, far ahead of his time. His words evoke dancing, metaphorical images that bloom in your mind like rare hothouse flowers. You can feel the angst, pain and beauty of his soul in these poems.

If you love poetry, this book is a must-have. I keep it by my bed and read it every night. I've had some pretty awesome dreams, too!

          5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2005-06-22

The words and images in this book have a way with your mind. They stick in your subconscious as if they are the stories your ancestors told around the campfire.

Jim Morrison's poetry is a mix of Greek mythology, and Shamanic mysticism. Throw in some books from long ago that are deep in the blood of mankind, and you end up with Morrison.

His poetry does not talk about himself. Instead he writes about archetypical themes in a modern setting. His setting was the 60's, which provided a lot of material: Vietnam, new drugs, the Women's Rights Movement, and the Civil Rights Movement.

All of these things were ripping at the fabric of America (and humanity). Morrison's poetry attacks these chaotic times head on. However, he writes as if he were a 19th century poet in the mold of Lord Byron, or Arthur Rimbaud. He achieved his goal, and a place in history.

This book is good, but not great. It covers many common endgame themes such as zugzwang, and how to draw, etc. There are a few good examples on tactics, but more examples on common endgame themes. This book is more for the advanced begginer/intermediate player.

5 out of 5 stars New awareness in the end game.......2001-05-03

This is my initial book review for amazon.Previous to reading Nunn's opus,I've always assumed endgames were of a strategical nature.Kotov in "Think like a grandmaster" tells a story about Capablanca's endgames. He claims to have met him at some chess event where a lecture was being given about endings.Capas basic claim was that planing the optimum location for the chess pieces in the ending was more important than the tatical variations. One gets the impression that the tatical variations just become automatically apparent once the strategical plan via piece place comes to fruition. Therefore the endgame can be fathomed intuatively with only a minimal effort of analysis.Nunn's book dispells that notion entirely by claiming endgames can be tatical. They can also be strategical like any other part of the game. Many strong grandmasters overlook many combinative possibilities in this part of the, because of such sterotypic thinking as mentioned above. This book can help one approach the ending with a fresh pair of eyes. From a personal perspective I have always over looked opportunities in combinative endgames assuming they do not exist. Now I know better. This book has freed me of such generalized thinking.A paradox I have seemed to stumble across is that apparently simple end games even appear to be more tatical than complex ones.Nunn by accident in his introductory statement seems to have also made a beautiful distinction between strategy and tactics. The former being the creation of plans and the latter being it's execution once it's apparent. The games are classics. Many include ideas such as mates, Stalemates, Promotion, Positional draws, fortresses ect.

                      Book Description

How to structure, facilitate, and implement the process.

Strategic planning is a critical part of running a business, but when you get a team of people together to plan, it can often become a confused exercise in grand visions without a clear process for establishing workable goals. This book is unique in providing both guidance for the actual content of strategic plans and techniques for how to plan in a team context. Readers will discover how to:

                      • structure the process so it custom fits their company needs

                      • effectively facilitate the process (keep meetings on track, train others in planning skills, document decisions made at meetings, present and communicate the plan)

                      • use teams and teamwork smoothly and productively to create a far-reaching plan—and then to implement it

Features detailed guidelines for each step, dozens of flowcharts, and three self-contained "facilitator's guides" to follow.

                      4 out of 5 stars Useful guide.......2007-05-17

I have several years of experience in participating and leading strategic planning, and I have found this to be a very good reference guide. One that I still refer to with some frequency. It has high-level comprehensive concepts as well as detailed, practical steps. Not for everyone, especially if you are put off by "business speak", but if you live in that world and are comfortable with it, this can be a very good reference guide.

I've recommended this book to a number of my clients who were struggling with strategic planning. Unlike other books, it does not deal in vague generalities or unsupported principles. It gives all of the steps and instructions to choose from that companies need to create an excellent plan. The steps are explained simply and a strategy on how to make "it happen".

It is really useful because it gives a variety of examples from many different organizations and industries. It is the kind of book that you can use, sitting around with your staff, to agree on the process that you will take for your particular organization.

I highly recommend it to an organization that wants to make their strategic approach stick. My expertise is in leadership and management systems and training, and it fits well with my experience and philosophy-you can't do anything with an organization unless they have a view of the future and a plan to implement it.

5 out of 5 stars Team based strategic planning book is excellent........2005-08-20

This is an excellent guide that allows a leader to structure a strategic planning process to fit a specific organization. It gives step by step instructions and real examples that make the process come alive. It also gives guides for facilitating collection of information and the meetings that must be held to get concensus on the organization's direction. In 30 years of federal government management, I have not seen any book as clear and as useful in directing development of a strategic plan. This book has been on the market since 1999, so I must not be alone in this opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Strategic Planning: Easy to Work With.......2005-08-02

This text was incredibly simple to understand. It was set up in a way that it had very easy guidelines to follow, and the applications were just as easy to work with. I completely recommend this text to all that are in the field of leadership. This is one text that is assured continual usage by all that purchase it.

1 out of 5 stars One of those dense, impenetrable tomes.......2005-01-25

"Team-Based Strategic Planning: A Complete Guide to Structuring, Facilitating and Implementing the Process" is one of those dense, impenetrable tomes blessed with having the American Management Association for its publisher. Hence, it smacks of authority.

Yet the book is written in a nearly unreadable language: the language of management-speak, uttered to obfuscate rather than enlighten, to deflect rather than engage.

One does not have to go far before running into verbal blockades such as this: "Organizations with an existing plan, however good or poor, should preface a plan update or total ground up revision with an upfront step: a review of the existing mission, plan, and accomplishments." Other similar all-star collections of jargon appear on nearly every page.

Shall we spend a moment considering this thought? First, people not organizations are the doers. Does "however good or poor" modify the existing plan or the organizations? Can there exist a nonexistent plan? Can a "ground up revision" be used for mulching the perennial garden? Can you actually preface and update, plus be upfront, in the same sentence? Finally, it's clear that organizations without existing plans will not be able to review their existing plans.

Language is not the only barrier. Some charts are full of type faces, sometimes six or more, calling to mind ransom notes assembled from letters clipped from magazines. Others are collections of thick symbols and unfriendly bold type and all caps that scream out MOCK IMPORTANCE.

My advice is to look for management advice that is dispensed in clear English with understandable graphics. [...]

                      Book Description

Fresh out of college and passionate about photography, Deborah Copaken Kogan moved to Paris in 1988 and began knocking on photo agency doors, begging to be given a photojournalism assignment. Within weeks she was on the back of a truck in Afghanistan, the only woman—and the only journalist—in a convoy of mujahideen, the rebel “freedom fighters” at the time. She had traveled there with a handsome but dangerously unpredictable Frenchman, and the interwoven stories of their relationship and the assignment set the pace for Shutterbabe’s six chapters, each covering a different corner of the globe, each linked to a man in Kogan’s life at the time.

From Zimbabwe to Romania, from Russia to Haiti, Kogan takes her readers on a heartbreaking yet surprisingly hilarious journey through a mine-strewn decade, seamlessly blending her personal battles—sexism, battery, life-threatening danger—with the historical ones—wars, revolution, unfathomable suffering—it was her job to record.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman Covers the War Zones.......2007-09-29

This very unusual book is fascinating whether you are interested in pursuing a career in journalism or just curious about what life is like as a woman covering war for a living. This "Shutterbabe" tells the story of her life from behind the camera across different battle zones around the globe. She also tells of the men she meets and gets involved with. There has been some criticism of the book for these tales of sexual escapades, but this is the raw story of a real person's life, and I think that they reflect a complete story, instead of one massaged to make the author look better.

My only disappointment with the story is that she finally gives it all up for motherhood, but that is real life too. Before that, Kogan was a producer for "Dateline" on NBC after her return to the United States. She speaks of tiring of wartime weariness and equates photojournalists to vultures who prey on others' misery--all of which I find disingenuous for someone who made her own living this way for many years. It's ok to change your mind, but I believe that photojournalism is an important way of bringing news to people, and I think Kogan would agree or she would have pursued another way of making a living with her camera in the first place.

Despite these claims, I highly recommend this book to everyone, particularly young women interested in journalism. This book is a real insider's look at covering war, from a woman's point of view, something (unfortunately) we still don't hear that much of, even in the 21st century. Don't miss it.

Deborah Copaken Kogan writes about her very young career as a rag tag photojournalist who fearlessly jumped at every opportunity and when opportunities weren't available or were pulled away (she was a woman after all) she made them happen for herself. As a young graduate from Harvard, Copaken moves off to Paris alone to become a war photojournalist. The challenges she faces mirror directly or as metaphors, the challenges that every young woman faces who believes she can make a difference in the world. The sexuality of Deborah's chosen relationships in Shutterbabe are understandable and expected for a young adventurous person. The accounts of the men she chooses to, and is forced to deal with interweave perfectly with the many other challenges that Deborah faces in her career. Critics who compare her sexual accounts and relationships to "what if a man wrote this" are way off base. The gender reverse argument is ridiculous. This is a story of a woman fighting the odds and questioning what life has handed her. Trying to make a difference in a world that doesn't belong to her. A man in the same situation would never have to process the same challenges. Men don't get raped and sexually attacked. OK maybe there are exceptions but a story about a man getting raped would not be a metaphor for what other men experience. A man being shut out of an opportunity because he's a man wouldn't mirror what nearly all men must deal with frequently in their lives. Though not religious, Copaken is inspired by her Jewish roots and her knowledge of the Holocast. She questions the existance of God as she plows through her adventures and thoughtfully produces art that will document and communicate the world's struggles. As she reaches her late twenties and after several years in the "trenches" Deborah experiences a metamorphosis. From the young ideal college graduate to the young woman who recognizes true love and emotional support from a partner, Deborah begins to question the effectiveness and authenticity of her career. She wrestles with the importance of childrearing. She moves to a safer career yet still struggles with the same questions. On one assignment Deborah meets her old male colleagues and finds herself defending her choices to these men with fetus envy(men who try to belittle women who raise children). Shutterbabe is my hero--a woman who makes a difference while young and again as a devoted parent of two children. I look forward to learning of Deborah Copaken Kogan's next phase. I recommend this book to all young people--men and women, to gain a richer understanding of the places we hold in this world and how we all might take a step forward from here. Be inspired by this young woman's incredible bravery and the conviction of her thoughtful choices.

Finally, a book where the author is honest about her adventures in both the work and sexual arenas. Reading some of the previous reviews it seems that because the author had what some would consider a privileged upbringing and went to Harvard she should have gone to join the peace corps or become a doctor and kept her mouth shut about her sexual exploits. Thank God she didn't. What Shutterbabe is writing about is real life...come on we all know women or perhaps are women who carry on affairs with married or soon to be married men. We all know certain men have affairs who don't like women...or rather don't respect women. Just because Shutterbabe went to Harvard does not mean that she automtically is excluded from the "my life sucks" group that we have all been a member of...so she takes a picture of a dead poacher and every one is up in arms about it, it was her job to do so if anyone should be judged shouldn't it be the editor who sent her there to get that particular picture or else...if it had been a guy who shot the picture I can guarantee you there would have been a truckful of women just waiting to soothe his fevered brow! Thanks Shutterbabe for your honesty about your life...although I cringed at several of the passages you wrote I applaud you and your story.

Great Read! I bought this book because Bill Jay from Lenswork magazine recommended it. It's a book you can't put down! I absolutely loved it. My only negative comment would be the title--it sounds so barbie-like and "fu-fu" whereas the book is meat-n-potatoes photography. This IS the required book for any woman who wants to be a photojournalist.

                          Book Description

Places Aztec civilization and history in the context of world history Montezuma (ca. 1466–1520), who had been educated as a priest and had served well as a military commander, ascended to the Aztec throne in about 1502 on the basis of his military record and reputation for piety. As Peter G. Tsouras demonstrates, almost immediately Montezuma transformed himself from a man of good judgment to a pitiless autocrat. He killed indiscriminately at home and waged wars of conquest against his neighbors, adding territory in contemporary Honduras and Nicaragua to his empire. In 1519, Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico at the head of a Spanish expedition. Montezuma believed the invaders to be gods fulfilling the prophecy that the god Quetzalcoatl would return. He failed to resist and cautiously offered gifts. As a result, Cortés and the conquistadors marched on the capital and seized Montezuma. The monarch fell, surrendering his power, wealth, and even the sovereignty of his people, almost gladly. He became a puppet of the Spaniards and finally allied himself in battle against his own people. When the emperor’s brother at last led an uprising, the ungrateful Spaniards killed Montezuma.

Against the backdrop of ancient Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, Tsouras captures the tragedy that befell Mexico during Montezuma’s reign.

The author uses only English-language sources, ignoring the many important primary documents that have not been translated from Spanish (and Nahuatl) into English. More seriously, he ignores most of the scholarly literature on Motecuhzoma, Cortes and the conquest of the Aztecs. This lead to a big mistake that undermines much of his discussion of Motecuhzoma: Recent scholarship shows that the notion that Motecuhzoma and other Aztecs believed Cortes to be the returning god Quetzalcoatl was a post-conquest fabrication. This changes our understanding of the Aztec emperor and his interaction with Cortes.

The recent scholarship is summarized in: Townsend, Camilla (2003) Burying the White Gods: New Perspectives on the Conquest of Mexico. American Historical Review 108:659-687. For the full argument see: Gillespie, Susan D. (1989) The Aztec Kings: The Construction of Rulership in Mexica History. University of Arizona Press, Tucson.

                            Book Description

Chetham's elegiac book about the towns along the banks of the Three Gorges area of the Yangtze River was written on the very eve of their destruction. After great controversy, the Chinese government has begun construction of the world's largest hydroelectric dam in the Three Gorges section of the Yangtze, a place renowned for its beauty. For over two thousand years, the Yangtze has been the great transport route linking the coast with the west and southwest and providing irrigation for the farms that fed China. Once the dam is completed in 2009, the water level will rise as much as 350 feet in a hundred-mile stretch of the river. The water will submerge over a dozen large cities, almost 1,500 villages and towns, and innumerable historical and cultural sites. Over a million people are being moved, voluntarily or otherwise, altering not only their lives, but the lives of a multitude of others whose existence is intertwined with the river. Before the Deluge captures a sense of the daily life, traditions and history of the people who live along the Upper Yangtze's Three Gorges area. It chronicles the region's past and present with an eye on the disruption of an existing way of life. Perhaps most importantly, it captures a world that is rapidly vanishing under the rushing waters of one of the world's largest rivers.

Found this book very readable. Thought it was fascinating as an introduction to how the Yangtze shaped China. Gave me a good overview of the the area around the river basins.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all disciplines..........2003-03-18

This book encompasses the history of the Yangtze, as a history major I enjoyed learning about the history pertaining the Yangtze. Moreover, it discusses the political motives behind the construction of the dam. Also, this book addresses the social as well as environmental costs of TGD. It is a great book for students, travelers, environmentalists, historians, and those who have an interest in China.

A superb book. Drawing from her life experience, the author gives vivid picture of people's life along China's Yangtze River. The construction of the super-dam will greatly alter people's life there. We should thank the author for recording, thus preserving the past that will be gone forever. Scholars, especially scholars of China Studies would get detailed description of the daily life of Chinese people. Travellers would also find the book useful. The author was among the first group of foreigners who worked and travelled in China after 1976. Thus, her story is really invaluable since not many foreigners had the chance to witness China around 1980. Overall, the book is informative and insightful. Wonderful work.

5 out of 5 stars Before The Deluge.......2002-12-02

December, 2, 2002. I just returned from my first trip to China which included 4 days cruising through the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. My good fortune was having this wonderfully and scholarly written book by Ms Chetham.

This book was invaluable to me because it gave me a full perspective of China, it's people, it's culture, and it's economic development. With this book as my traveling companion along with 43 good friends from San Francisco our group visited Beijing, Xian, Chongching,350 miles of the Yangtze River, Wuhan, Shanghai, & Souzhou. In each locale we had english speaking guides who were born and raised in the area. The combination of the local input, our observations, and readings from this book created a "trip of a lifetime" for me.

If you plan to visit China this book is a must.
