Book Description

In between her fairy-tale wedding and her premature death, there lived the most beloved royal presence of our century, surely as multifaceted as any celebrity of our time. The radical twists and turns in her brief life drew the fascination of millions. Yet the most photographed woman in the world was also the least quoted--her actual words were seldom heard, and never gathered, until now.

This unique book is the result of a scrupulous worldwide search for every one of Diana's significant quotes. Upon reading this collection, one will find that behind her shy veneer dwelled a woman of extraordinary resourcefulness, stamina, and, perhaps above all, vulnerability. In fact, her open frankness about the events and people around her is both disarming and startling. The reader will discover the sharp clarity, endless warmth, and ready wit that she brought to her legendary life in this intimate self-portrait. This is the closest we will ever get to an autobiography from the People's Princess.

2 out of 5 stars I've heard it all before.......2006-04-27

If you have read the more popular books about Diana, or watched any news coverage of her throughout her life, you have already read this book. There are many quotes from Andrew Morton's "Diana: Her True Story" as well as Diana's infamous Panorama interview. Most of the other quotes seem to be taken out of random small talk conversations and provide little insight.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source Book.......2000-05-10

It's longer than most books of quotes from the Princess because Mr Adler presents the sweet and the sour.

The loving, the difficulties and the humor of Diana in her own words

People say those who love Diana believe she was a saint. No, she was far too interesting for that.

She's loved because she was entirety and gloriously human , and allowed it to show.

We are all works in progress. But imagen being the Priness of Wales and yet insisting on being yourself as well?

This book covers the terrain well

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story.......2005-01-31

This book was recommended by a friend and it was an excellent investment for my children. Great interaction on each page to read to a younger sibling. Wonderful pictures that come alive. Great tips at the bottom of some pages for parents to help the child being left behind. This book reminds us that in our hectic lives dealing with our sick children that we sometimes forget the younger ones need us more than we realize at these stressful hospitilized times. My 10 year old and 5 year both loved this book. All hospitals should have this book on hand as well.

5 out of 5 stars MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW.......2003-03-26

I want to exalt Anna Jaworski for writing one of the most thoughtful books that I have read in a very long time. Inspired when her son Alex had to be hospitalized for open-heart surgery, the author saw the trauma on her other son, Joey, and realized there was a need not being addressed in this area. Her work has met this need with flying colors.

Of course when a child must undergo an operation, we all zero in our attention and affection on them, and we should. However, without meaning to, we often forget the other children in the family and do not realize the emotional conflicts that they are encountering. This book will open your eyes to their feelings.

Ms. Jaworski does a wonderful job in "My Brother Needs An Operation" in showing, with honest words and colorful illustrations, what will happen during this time.

She establishes the family relationship, the different activities they share and the bonding between siblings. She speaks of the fear that the sibling feels when he hears his brother will be in the hospital and she begins to deal with that fear in many constructive ways. She takes you into the mind of the child, what he is thinking and feeling. Excellent!

Ms. Jaworski includes in the back of the book a Hospital Diary and Activity Pages.
This is great. She has pages for the child to fill in his name, feelings, draw pictures and play games.

I can not even imagine the heartache a parent feels when their child must undergo an operation, but I will tell you this. If you are experiencing this trauma, and you have other children in your home, this book is a must for you.
It is one of the most outstanding books, touching the emotions of a hurting child, that I have read in a very long time. If I could stand and applaud this author, I would.
But all I can do is write a review that I hope will touch you enough to make you seek out this book, if you have this need or know someone who does, it is a must read.

My Brother Needs An Operation, words from the heart of one who knows.

Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars excellent book for siblings.......2001-08-26

This is a story about a young boy needing open heart surgery and how it relates to his brother. It deals with feelings, and with staying with relatives while his brother is in hospital, plus more. It is a wonderfully told story, with questions to ask your own child as you read through it together. I found the tips for parents especially helpful and the back of the book has activities for the sibling/s to do while the brother/sister is in the hospital. I originally bought this book to read to my twin boys when my older son will need further surgery, but it is he who loves this book and asks me to read it to him often. I change the words around to suit his needs and I believe it has helped him cope with his own medical issues. This will be a book that we will treasure for many years.

5 out of 5 stars Have a sibling who needs an operation?.......2001-02-21

If so, this book is for you. My son loved the suggested questions, the diary, & activity section. He felt more involved plus, it helped him pass the time away from us. Our son is young so we wrote in the diary & helped with the activities. Plus, you can make it a sister also. The story is written on an easy to understand level for young sibs & easy read for older sibs. Anna Jaworski did a great job on this as well as "Heart of a Mother" which I also reccomend. This book is based on her son's experience, therefore it is realistic.

              Book Description

In Cinematic Political Thought, Michael J. Shapiro investigates aspects of contemporary politics and articulates a critical philosophical perspective with politically disposed treatments of contemporary cinema. Reading such films as Hoop Dreams, Lone Star, Father of the Bride II and To Live and Die in LA through the lens of Deleuze, Derrida, Foucault and Lyotard, Shapiro demonstrates what it can mean to think the political both in terms of cinema studies and in wider aesthetic and social contexts.

Cinematic Political Thought is a polemical work, aimed at encouraging critical, ethical and political thinking. Its breadth of theoretical scope and empirical reference, and the innovative style of presentation will make it vital reading for anyone with an interest in the conjunction of culture and politics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book .......2007-07-22

Found it to be most informative, especially the development of the Averbakh in the King's Indian.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding collection of annotated games........2004-01-18

Most (younger) players today don't even know who Averbakh is, at least as far as I can gather from a few conversations on-line with various chess players.

Here is a player who competed in 15 Soviet Championship Tournaments in the span, 1949-1969. (Something of a record.) He won the Premier Championship in 1954. His score, with more wins than draws, (+ 10, = 9, - 0!); ... has few parallels in the history of this grand tournament. (Source: "The Soviet Championships," by B. Cafferty and Mark Taimanov.) He was in the "Top 10 Players" in the world in 1959, according to Jeff Sonas's website. And according to ELO, (in his book); Averbakh's best 5-year rating peak was 2615. (Adjusted for inflation, this would be at least 2675, in terms of FIDE ratings for 2003.) And Keene and Divinsky, in their fascinating but controversial book, "Warriors of The Mind," rank him as the TWENTY-FIFTH (# 25) greatest chess player who ever lived.

He is also a very distinguished player, an expert on end-game theory, (He has written over a dozen books on this topic.); a respected opening theoretician, (One Russian player told me, in an e-mail, that Averbakh has contributed material to literally thousands of articles in various Soviet magazines!); a widely read author, a judge of chess compositions, a FIDE arbiter, etc. (The list is almost endless!) He holds several titles in Russia to include "Master of The Sport of Chess," and also "Honored Chess Trainer."

So by now, you should realize that here is a player you should listen to and learn from. He has taken a volume of his games that was published in the USSR back in the 1950's, and enlarged and expanded it for a (new) publication in the press.

In the end, you get his 60 most memorable and best games (1943-1975) that was played over a career that has spanned some seven decades, although he plays very little now due to advancing age.

I received this book about a year ago ... many thanks to the {former} Internet student that sent me this book so that I could review it. I have played over all the games in this book, and studied about 10-15 relatively carefully. (I have also annotated a few of these games; they can be found on my various web sites.)

My conclusion is that this is an OUTSTANDING book, I was so pleased with it, I decided to reward it with five stars. The games in here are clean, accessible, and thoroughly explained. (A few of the lines are a shade dated, at least by the standards of modern opening theory.) But in the end, I think that the average player could definitely learn a great deal by a close study of the contests contained within this book.

In closing, I would like to add that I sent out a survey to many of my Internet students. The three or four who bought the book and responded had this to say about this volume: "Excellent games, my Internet rating has gone up over a hundred points since I started studying this book," or "I think studying all the end-games in this book will make me better in that phase of the game," and finally, "I am really enjoying this book. The games are carefully explained in a manner that even I can follow!"

5 out of 5 stars Exciting chess, great writing.......2002-07-30

This is a beautiful book, and I find Averbakh to be a great writer. He explains things clearly in a manner that the intermediate player can understand, in a way that can help you improve. This book actually improved the way I analyzed games. And there are many great wins against the world's best players at the time. This book deserves a five-star review, even if Averbakh was not a world champ. How many players can be world champs? Not many, even those who deserve it. Averbakh is a giant of chess.

                5 out of 5 stars Well-annotated game collection by leading 50s player.......2000-06-14

The author rightly says 'this book should have been published at least a quarter of a century ago'. Yuri Averbakh (b. 1922) was probably one of the world's top dozen players in the 1950s. He qualified for the immensely strong Candidates tournament at Zýrich, 1953 (10th), and convincingly won the USSR Championship the following year, and narrowly lost the playoff after a tie in 1956. As he points out, chess is a lot different now, but there were many fine players and great games from that era.

But it's not surprising that this book took so long in coming. Averbakh had his finger in almost every chess pie, as a Judge of Chess Compositions, leading endgame theoretician, President of the USSR Chess Federation, magazine editor, author and trainer. I myself have benefited from his training at a chess seminar in Sukhumi, and Australasia benefited from two visits in the 1960s, when he dominated the tournaments he played in. It must be said that he was a product of the Soviet system to a large extent -- see my review of _The Soviet School of Chess_.

Averbakh had a fairly high percentage of draws in his career, and as he says, had a reputation as a technician. But he hoped to show that he had a universal style by presenting games decided in other ways.

Indeed, the technical skill shows up well in his white-square exploitation against Najdorf, and an endgame with a knight sacrifice against Euwe at Zýrich, 1953; or blocking out an enemy knight against Bannik, which won him the Soviet Title in 1954. But there are also fierce battles with oppositely castled kings against Bronstein, Taimanov and Petrosyan; a devastating opening innovation against a World Correspondence Champion which Averbakh saved for 18 years; and some classic wins, such as against Panno, with his patented 'Averbakh variation' against the King's Indian, still a dangerous weapon. Other scalps include Botvinnik, Smyslov, Keres and Korchnoi.

It's also nice to see a book where annotations are in clear and interesting prose rather than Informator symbols. The publishers Cadogan are to be congratulated on an excellently produced book which does the contents justice.

All internal/external, junior/senior consultant or you have to do a specific consulting job in your organization or for a client, this book is an excellent tool to give you the basic (and more) to help you to diagnose.
Being a "junior" I found them easy to use and "implement" and the results had high impact on my surprised customers. It helps to build your "legacy" as a consultant.

                Book Description

He might appropriately be called the "founding father" whom American history forgot. Renowned during his lifetime as a principal architect of cultural and political life in the fledgling United States, Noah Webster has since disappeared into the pages of his own dictionary — ironically eclipsed by his own colossal creation. Until now. This groundbreaking biography brilliantly restores Webster's monumental legacy as a teacher, legislator, philosopher, lawyer, crusading editor, and one of history's most profoundly influential lexicographers. In the first major biography of Noah Webster in over sixty years, author Harlow Unger creates an intriguing portrait of the United States as an energetic and confident young nation, even when independence was fragile and the future unclear.

A descendant of one of New England's first families, Noah Webster was born in 1758 into a Connecticut landscape on the brink of revolution and strife. A serious-minded boy with bright red hair, he inherited from his father a deep-seated pride of family and love of country. When the Boston Massacre of 1770 roused the soldiers of the Hartford commonweal to arms, Webster was twelve years old and already carrying a musket and marching in the local militia. As a young man, his burgeoning patriotism was further fueled by the writings of John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Thomas Paine. These philosophers heavily influenced the first portion of Webster's career as a powerfully vocal warrior against political and social disunion and the forces of anarchy. As a schoolteacher and tireless lecturer, he sought to eradicate illiteracy in lower social classes and endorsed unprecedented programs to provide equal opportunities for women. Webster, in short, became America's first social reformer. He was not yet forty.

Webster is known chiefly for his equally remarkable second career as the original standard-bearer of American English, however. His speller sold countless copies over the years, his dictionary achieved nothing short of a complete transformation of the way Americans wrote the language, and his elementary school curriculum was for decades the foundation of American education.

Enjoying complete access to Webster's papers, letters, essays, and diaries, Unger explores with unique clarity and depth the role his subject played as a close ally of George Washington, John Adams, and John Jay and as a key player in the heated battle to ratify the Constitution.

Breathtaking adventure—from the Revolution to the War of 1812—and masterful scholarship converge in this riveting chronicle of a singularly American intellect. In the indispensable Noah Webster: The Life and Times of an American Patriot, Unger brings his meticulous research and eye for telling detail to bear on his subject's myriad achievements, as well as his enduring legacies.

"Until Webster, no great nation on earth could boast of the linguistic unity that Webster created in the United States. More than a lexicographer, Webster was a teacher, philosopher, author, essayist, orator, political leader, public official, and crusading editor. Webster's life thrust him into every major event of the early history of our nation, from the Revolutionary War to the War of 1812. He touched the lives of the most renowned Americans—and the most obscure. He earned the love and friendship of many, the hatred of some, but the respect of all. Noah Webster helped create far more than an American dictionary; he helped create an American nation."—from the Prologue

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Effort at Resurrecting a Great Founding Father .......2005-01-24

I found this fantastic book on the clearance stack at Border's. I became aware of Webster's importance from references to him in other books on the Founding Fathers. However, it wasn't until I read Unger's work that I fully appreciate how important Webster really was. Soon after graduating from Yale, the Connecticut native embarked on a lifelong dream of improving the educational system of the fledgling country to both unify it and to instill the young with the moral and intellectual virtues necessary to maintain a free republic.

The first step was to have America adopt an agreed upon spelling convention tailored to the US to replace the current chaotic spellings borrowed from Britain. After years of hard work, he succeeded in getting his spelling books adopted in practically all schools within the US. The book later was nicknamed The Blue-Backed Speller and was the standard in American schoolrooms throughout the 19th century. To protect his creation, he successfully petitioned national leaders and all state legislatures to enact America's first copyright protection laws. In the course of his campaign he befriended George Washington, Ben Franklin, James Madison, and John Jay. An ardent nationalist, Webster wrote a widely read political tract in 1785, Sketches, calling for a strong national government to replace the Articles of Confederation. This work would have a powerful impact on the Convention of 1787 as Washington summoned Webster to Philadelphia to meet nightly with him and other attendees to solicit his views on how to craft the new constitution.

In 1793, he returned to the national political scene to take the lead in countering the French representative Citizen Genet, who, on behalf of the revolutionary government, actively attempted to convince the American citizenry to overthrow President Washington in order for the US to support France in its struggle against Britain. (France's malevolent intentions included having the US become a French vassal state. ) Couching his speeches in the ideals of the American revolution, Genet gained quite a bit of popular support. However, Webster exposed the ruse and denounced American supporters for Genet as dupes. He publicly defended Washington and his administration's stand on neutrality against the onslaught of the anti-Federalist press, who sympathized with Genet.

Besides serving in local politics, Webster led scientific inquiries with help from Benjamin Rush to combat infectious diseases (a world first) and to abolish slavery. Toward the end of his life, he embarked on his greatest achievement: a new, comprehensive dictionary of the English language. His endeavor comprised decades of research which included his learning several languages, both old and new, and traveling to the national libraries of France and Britain for etymological histories of words. His achievement won him stunning praise from the world over.

A family man, Webster's indomitable character was forged by his strong Calvinist beliefs. This book traces the life of a most remarkable individual and too sadly neglected Founding Father. The book is written in an easy style and an obvious result of a great deal of research. A must for those seeking to appreciate the reason behind America's success over the last two centuries.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding biography.......1999-11-24

This is an outstanding biography of a person who, because he never held high political office, is less well known than he deserves to be. In reading about Webster's life, one also learns much about the political controversies of the early United States--how many know, for example, that George Washington had bitter political enemies while President, or that the War of 1812 was so unpopular in New England that it prompted many there (including Webster) to discuss seceding from the Union? This biography deserves to be widely read.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing and enlightening.......1999-09-23

In his preface, the author notes that Noah Webster is so famous for his dictionary that it's overshadowed his many other achievements. Too true! I was amazed to learn of Mr. Webster's achievements in politics and education reform, particularly the influential role he played in shaping the U.S. Constitution. This book is a Must Read for anyone who wants a deeper and more accurate view into early American history.

4 out of 5 stars Noah Webster deserves to be better known........1999-01-15

If you're ready for a reprieve from contemporary biographical sleaze, read this fine biography of Noah Webster, a good and moral man who held his family and country in balanced respect. You have lots to learn from this book if all you know about Webster is the dictionary. What surprised me was a life that spanned the years from colonial times to the mid-19th century. This was a man who never held high elective office but was an influential friend of those who did -- Washington, Franklin, John Adams and Madison. He spent months traveling up and down the East coast, espousing his beliefs in the ideals of Federalism. He advocated tirelessly for an American language and literature independent of the British tradition. To protect himself against piracy of his highly popular reader for schoolchildren, he campaigned successfully for copywright legislation. For this reader, whose last course in American History is a blurred memory, the "times" part of this story was as fascinating as the "life." I was reminded of the chaos of the country in the interim between the Revolution and Constitutional Convention, of Shay's Rebellion, of the acrimonious regionalism that nearly tore apart the young country, of the XYZ affair, and the threat to a fragile democracy of the War of 1812. I was made to recall the inadequacies of early American education and the perils of public health before urban sanitation systems. In this carefully-researched portrait, Unger presents Webster sympathetically as an American Renaissance man, curious and informed in fields from law to medicine to philosophy to lexicography. One of Yale University's early graduates, he spent his life educating himself. Because Webster was such an assiduous diarist and letter-writer, the book also provides a rich portrait of his family and private life -- his devotion to his wife and children, his frustration with a ne'er-do-well son, his financial concerns, and his delight in hearth and home. The culmination of the story is the dictionary, the product of a lifelong belief in the necessity of a uniform American language to unify the disparate voices of a young nation. Webster the scholar devoted years of careful research to this project, both at home and in Europe. His efforts secured his mention in history books. Harlow Unger's book fleshes out the man and his times with substance and grace.
