Some good photos, some history not a must have book.......2001-07-31

A large collection of photos of the late Princess, many of them very good, most of them you'll have in some other book. I'd say buy it if you're building up a collection but if you have a tight book budget this might be one to leave off if you already have some picture books. The history part is interesting too, in the same way, and may have a small error or two in it.

A "must have" book for Diana fans........1998-12-31

Diana, an English Rose is not just another picture book. Skinner's writing is lively, amusing and insightful, a very balenced account of Diana, Princess of wales amazing life and the impact of her death. I'm sure Diana would have given it 5 stars. I own nearly every book written about her and this book definitely completes my collection.

Evans analyzes the use of atomic imagery found in a variety of Hollywood genres produced between 1947 and 1964 such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Pickup on South Street (1953), and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961). The industry-focused approach presented in this book views cultural production as a material process unfolding under specific economic, political and cultural conditions and emphasizes the "pressures and limits" of production that are inscribed in the cinematic texts. The study illustrates in concrete detail how the cinematic texts negotiated by audiences are produced in highly concentrated industries and are constructed as a result of often contradictory determinants. These determinants work to shape the texts produced by encouraging, for example, the production of particular genres and by privileging a specific set of images over others. Evans argues that through these images, Hollywood articulated a limited critique of the Cold War ideology, which it also helped to create. She concludes that Hollywood's overall ideological effect has been to restrict the discursive means available for defining social reality.

Review of Dr. Evans book.......1999-06-22

This is a wonderful summary and deep analysis of a highly important subject to American society, the use of media in portraying icons of poplular culture derived from the most frightening scientific accomlishements of the decade. Professor Evans does an amazing job of simplifying and displaying for the reader the complexity of modern life, while emphasizing the impressive nature of modern life. This is a wonderful book, an intensely interesting subject and an excellent analysis. I would recommend it to any reader.

This book really made me think differently about movies........1998-11-04

I really liked this book, it made me think differently about movies and what they portray. This study points out how decisions about what movies contain are influenced by the profit motives of the industry. It also provides a new look at science fiction movies of the 1950s and 1960s, how atomic culture contributed to the development of that genre.

Nice collection of games, sketchy analysis........2006-07-04

Unless you collect chess books, I don't feel that this book is a must. The book has two pros: price and nice collection of games (Most of the games in the book were NOT played by Alekhine).

But in my view, it's biggest con is depthless and lip-deep analysis. Don't buy this book if you are looking to understand Alekhine's thought process or looking for some instructional material.

Alekhine's sparse comments certainly help, but your should have a pretty good chess knowledge in order to get the most out of this book.

What I love about this book is it shows Alekhine in a more modern era, how he analyzed more of the modern openings that were starting to emerge. His annotations are always great, and at this price, get it!

The middle ground........2001-01-06

Though this book has a few chess gems to be enjoyed by everyone, this book isn't for the mere beginner. Sometimes it isn't even for the average player. Alekhine's annotations are thorough, for the most part, but are often tinged with either mocking condescension or complete blase. He tacitly assumes that certain tactical or strategic ideas are obvious, and therefore fails from time to time in teaching the reader anything. The games are often interesting, though, again, not for the player interested in only an occasional game. This is a relatively good book if you have enough experience and can study it deeply, but if you are looking for a book of instruction, look elsewhere.

107 CHESS BATTLES, ONLY 30 PLAYED BY ALEKHINE.......2000-06-22

Overall good book, Alekhine gives his comments on these 107 games played during his time. He does a great job at revealing the players way of thinking and the hows and whys of each move. However, the title of this book is very misleading, potential buyers are led to beleive that Alekhine actually playes all 107 games. He only plays 30! If you want purely games of Alekhine, spend your money on something else

History in the Making.......1999-07-21

Dover produces fine books. As for me I don't mind descriptive notation which turns off a lot of potential customers. But here they have the best efforts of a World Champion and it is in algebraic notation, and has clear diagrams. Some of the games fall short of top drawer play, hence I deducted 1 star, but otherwise this is excellent chess and fine commentary by Alekhine. There is also a tribute to his old Nemesis Capablanca. Altogether a must for any player's library

Simply put, the book is claptrapped slung together by a couple VCs who can't work for Microsoft anymore. To help market this dung they convinced a bunch of cronies to submit good reviews on this site.

Caveat emptor.

Insightful!.......2005-08-24

While the metaphorical sports set-up is appealing, this "playbook" about marketing relies very little on the substance of sports and even less on the more powerful forces behind marketing. Instead, John Zagula and Richard Tong have written a clever grouping of five different marketing strategies, explained with sports metaphors. Real-life strategic examples and assessments of related risks and rewards accompany each play. Using some repetition to emphasize their lessons, the authors explain which market conditions call for using each of the five strategies. They demonstrate how forces in the market make some plays more feasible, although some of the illustrative stories seem a bit forced into fitting the marketing move under discussion and some examples lack sufficient detail to let the reader align the plays with precise goals and market conditions. However, the stories and strategies all have that insider flavor, right from the coach. We believe marketers who are still learning the ropes will want this strategic playbook.

Bad book, questionable reviews.......2005-07-23

First, this so-called playbook is a bunch of silly stories that have no current value. Example: the "drag race" tells how Microsoft sold word processing software in the 80s. Are you working for Microsoft and need advice? Do you think the market might have changed since then? Duuhhh.

Second, it is painfully obvious the authors salted the board here with positive reviews. I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote them under pen names. One of the authors posted a whine about being outed on these phony reviews, probably embarassed.

Third, if you are an entrepreneur seeking venture funding and pitch to the fund where these author's work, skim this book to preview the "expertise" they will be offering. Don't say you weren't warned.

A "must read" for most organizations.......2005-07-23

For those directly (or even indirectly) involved in their organization's marketing initiatives, what Zagula and Tong offer in this volume can be very helpful. They introduce and then rigorously examine what they call "five battle-tested plays for capturing and keeping the lead in any market." Use of "any" is an exaggeration because, of course, it is imperative to market whatever one offers only where potential is greatest for sufficiently profitable sales. Zagula and Tong duly note that "no matter what the play, if you're running it on the wrong field or with the wrong resources, it just won't work." In marketing as in thoroughbred racing, "there are courses for horses." Also, different situations require different "plays." Here are the five which Zagula and Tong offer for consideration:

The Drag Race: "In some circumstances, your best bet calls for singling out one competitor and putting the pedal to the metal racing against them to win."

Comment: Endorsed by Henry V, the Russian forces at Balaclava, and Crazy Horse and his Oglala Sioux warriors...but not by the French forces at Agincourt, Lord Cardigan and the Light Brigade, and the Seventh Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer's command at the Little Big Horn.

The Platform Play: Once dominant, develop strategic alliances and strengthen position because "you never know from where a new challenger is likely to emerge."

Comment: Obviously, the strategy and tactics are almost wholly defensive. This allows time to consolidate, train, refresh, obtain and evaluate competitive intelligence, and in all other appropriate ways anticipate threats to dominance.

The Stealth Play: As you gather resources and complete preparations, whittle away at the incumbent's weak points. However, never forget that "big, dumb, slow companies can still squish you."

Comment: An excellent strategy for organizations with severely limited resources. Margins for error are razor-thin. The "big, dumb, slow companies" can afford to carpet bomb. Be a sniper. Carefully read Sun Tzu's The Art of War, especially the chapter on Estimates. Also Jason Jennings' Think Big, Act Small.

The The Best-of-Both Play: Rather than focus on compromises ("trade-offs") at both the high and low ends of the given market, gain dominance over the entire category "by collapsing these two ends. If you appeal to the most important needs of each segment of the market, you can win them all."

Comment: Huge "if" because, when attempting to appeal to all market segments, you could lose in competition for dominance in any one of them.

High-Low Play: Try to close out the competition by splitting the given category and thereby owning both. "This is the hardest play to manage, but if it's done right, you'll achieve high volumes and high margins at the same time."

Comment: An even greater "if."

Any summary such as this fails to establish for any one "play" the extensive context within which Zagula and Tong carefully explain the relative advantages and disadvantages of each. Hence the importance of the "Take-Aways" section which they provide at the end of the chapter which they devote to each of the five. Hence the importance, also, of Chapter 7 in which they discuss how to "shift gears" from one to another, Part II in which they help their reader to analyze the the "terrain" of her or his own competitive marketplace (i.e. mapping both perils and opportunities), and Part III in which they explain HOW to initiate and then sustain an appropriate play "as a killer campaign."

Of special interest and value to me is what Zagula and Tong have to say about "The Campaign Brief." It is thoroughly explained in Chapter 13. Here is a brief excerpt:

"First, your campaign brief will be a single document you'll follow for the campaign, so you'll need to cover pretty much everything.....You find the key points, the essence, of all the analysis, strategy, and guidance you've come up with so far -- and cram it all onto a single page. That's right, onto one single page....On the one page, you're going to put three core paragraphs that lay out the whole rationale for your strategy, each paragraph no longer than three sentences" which assert case, story, and positioning" followed by two paragraphs which specify key support followed by objectives, goals, and metrics. Zagula and Tong urge their reader to be able to complete the Three We's: We believe..., We will..., and We are....

No brief commentary such as this can possibly do full justice to the abundance of information and the wealth of insights as well as recommendations which Zagula and Tong's book provides. Suffice to say that it provides a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective program which, for obvious reasons, must then be modified to accommodate the specific needs, interests, and resources of each reader's own organization.

The first 15 pages were OK. After that, it got boring fast. Borrow a copy, if you must.

56 men who changed the course of history!.......2007-06-26

Ever wonder what happened to those men to which we, as Americans, are so deeply indebted who signed a document stating that they were willing to sacrifice their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor? Well, according to the historical accounts presented in this book, many of those men we commonly refer to as the Founding Fathers, actually did sacrifice greatly to help establish and preserve this great nation and the fact that far too little is known of their great sacrifices is a tragedy in itself.

The book walks through the lives of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence in the order in which they signed - from the three delegates from New Hampshire to the signers from Georgia. Obviously some names are familiar such as John Hancock, John Adams, Samuel Adams, John Witherspoon, Benjamin Rush, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. But little is known even about these great men regarding the extent of their personal sacrifice to the cause of this nation.

However, the essence of this book is in examining the lives of those lesser known men who gave up just as much, some even more, in the cause of freedom. Men such as Dr. Matthew Thorton from New Hampshire, who interestingly enough was absent on the Fourth of July when the vote was taken on the adoption of the Declaration, but who, approving of the measure, was subsequently given an opportunity to sign it personally. Many of these men were imprisoned during the Revolutionary War and some even suffered tremendous financial distress as they served as the primary funding for the conflict - several never regained their pre-war financial status and some passed away penniless! Most of the men served in various elected offices following the Revolutionary War - from Governors of their newly created states, to Congressmen or Senators representing their state in the national government.

The book is a wonderful historical display of the importance of these fifty-six men who stood in the gap from just a time as this and did what was necessary to confront and combat tyranny in the face of tremendous personal and professional hardship. It is an outstanding reminder to us all that the freedoms that we have an enjoy are not free - they came at great personal cost to many - and it should be a challenge to every American to continue to invest into the maintenance of this great vision for the world - the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Excellent inspirational book.......2006-08-30

This is an excellent and inspirational book. Reading of the dedication and sacrifice of the men who literally staked their lives and fortunes to found our nation is humbling and should inspire in us a wealth of gratitude. I heartily recommend this book to every American.

This is an invaluable source of historical perspective on the Declaration of Independence itself as well as the lives of the signers. For anyone interested in the history surrounding the American Revolution it is a must.
It should be in every school library in the nation and the world.

Lives of The Signers by B. J. Lossing is a unique epic that traces the lives of fifty-seven of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. From John Adams , Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, to the lesser known men like Dr. Benjamin Rush. Lossing first published his book in 1848, a time when the new nation was young, and fresh. This book was used for many years in our country's public schools. I am pleased that this book is now available again from Wall Builders Press. Permit me to list just a few of the many men whose lives are sketched in this timeless volume.

William Whipple of New Hampshire 1730-1785
Matthew Thornton of New Hampshire 1714-1803
Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts 1744-1814

All of these men were brilliant statesmen; they had a mind capacity that would far outreach many of our politicians today. These men understood law and government. Not only did they sign the Declaration, many drafted the U.S. Constitution years later. I believe this book belongs on every home-school family's shelf. This is a great read-aloud for the family because the short sketches are easy to follow, and it is very educational. There are many books like this one, for instance, A Worthy Company M. E. Bradford; however, Lives of the Signers is possibly the more in-depth. I heartily recommend this book.

Wonderful.......2003-09-24

I really enjoy reading books from this era (1848) for several reasons. First the style interests me. Second the positive and negative characteristics are sharply different. For example many of the signers are stated to have been good examples of piety. I am forced to wonder what a modern writer would have to say in such regard.

The topic of this work was also of great interest. One thing that struck me was the familiarity of the names. Counties streets, schools all sorts of things have very similar names. Also the amount that these men gave for all of us to enjoy what we do today is astounding. For anyone interested in the founding of the USA this is an excellent read. The book also contains chapters on the articles of confederation, stamp act and the constitution

Wow is what I thought when I bought this book. It seemed so interesting for a future political consultant. A must read, I thought. This is no hands on campaigning book. Instead, think of it as a dictionary.Each chapter has about 4-5 pages on one aspect of campaigning. radio, tv, billboards, phonecalls, on and on. each author explains what they do and tries to give you a very tip of the iceberg view of what it is they do. Some authors even offer suggestions. I read chapter to chapter and got a highlight of each campaign tool. Ok, I thought.

At first glance, I thought it was a colleciton of articules with no particular focus. But after reading it for a while, I knew that's the one I have been looking for.

The book sets out in details the full picture of the political consultant's business, from history to development, from theory to techniques. A must buy for anyone who is interested in a career of political consulting.
