3 out of 5 stars Diana: Her True Story.......2005-02-05

This book was intersting but had large words. This book would best be for adults or teenagers around 15. You get storys from her friends and family. Plus intersting pictures giving what her life was like when young and old. Though starting the begging of the book it starts with a phone call it gets better in the reading process. This book was good for this report and had enough information. The pictures of her kids before she past on shows how she cared for them. You could tell who she trusted when in interviews and who she stayed away from when coming to press. She had to be careful when not with her husband but other friends. Though before divorced she knew something was up with her husband and his close "friend" Camilla Parker-Bowles. You have to read this book to find out what happened to her afer the divorce and why it didn't work. This book is a "B" so cheak it out to read and what you think of it.

    Book Description

In the late 1950s John Surtees was the dominant rider in top-level British and European motorcycle racing. A precocious talent, he began riding competitively on Vincents in the early 1950s, then REGs and NSUs and Nortons. He swiftly established himself as one of the quickest and most determined competitors. He confirmed his outstanding qualities as a rider when he won his first world 500cc title for MV Agusta in 1956, and this triumph was followed by six more titles, three at 350cc and three at 500cc. From 1958 to 1960, he was rarely beaten and usually he won by a huge margin.

In this fully illustrated and in-depth new study, Mick Walker reassesses Surtees's remarkable record and explores the background to his achievement. He recalls Surtees's early introduction to the sport, his rapid development as a rider and his years of dominance. The technical side of Surtees's career - the bikes he rode and his considerable skills as a mechanic and engineer - is covered in detail. The book gives a fascinating insight into the intense motivation that often gave Surtees the edge over his rivals and laid the foundation for the success that followed.

      Book Description

Unruly women have been making a spectacle of themselves in film and on television from Mae West to Roseanne Arnold. In this groundbreaking work, Kathleen Rowe explores how the unruly woman--often a voluptuous, noisy, joke-making rebel or "woman on top"--uses humor and excess to undermine patriarchal norms and authority. At the heart of the book are detailed analyses of two highly successful unruly women--the comedian Roseanne Arnold and the Muppet Miss Piggy. Putting these two figures in a deeper cultural perspective, Rowe also examines the evolution of romantic film comedy from the classical Hollywood period to the present, showing how the comedic roles of actresses such as Katharine Hepburn, Barbara Stanwyck, and Marilyn Monroe offered an alternative, empowered image of women that differed sharply from the "suffering heroine" portrayed in classical melodramas.

Kathleen Rowe's "The Unruly Woman: Gender and the Genres or Laughter," published in 1995 is a university press publication that examines Mae West's contributions to the Feminist Movement and evaluates her role as a female icon of the twentieth century. This treatment of West is a typical academic text with good research of textual sources, but with little or no interviews and featuring theory that is hit or miss.
When Mae West was asked why she never wrote an article supporting the Feminist Movement she reportably drawled, "I was nevah asked....."

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2007-07-01

In my library of books on this business I have 68 different titles (I just counted them to be sure).

Without any question, this is THE BEST BOOK I have ever read about network marketing.

The authors tell it like it is. No hype. No false promises. They just explain how network marketing works and tell you what you have to do to make it work for you. I have loaned this book to so many prospects that I have had to now buy three additional copies. I always have someone reading it, because once you understand network marketing, you join. It's that simple! This must be THE BEST recruiting tool ever invented!

Reading Mary's new book Be a Network Marketing Superstar: The One Book You Need to Make More Money Than You Ever Thought Possible inspired me to write a review of it, then I thought I needed to post my comments about her first book too: I believe Make Your First Million In Network Marketing is destined to be an industry classic.

Thank you Mary and Wayne, for changing my life.

5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive MLM Book .......2005-11-19

Mary has written a comprehensive MLM book on retaining a huge network marketing organization as well as getting and keeping new customers! Few books have covered these 2 topics in such depth.

It is certainly written by someone who has been there and done that.

it wasn't what i thought it would be. i don't want to make my first million through "pyramid schemes"

          5 out of 5 stars Not a scheme, a method of marketing..that works.......2004-07-08

I am amused and happy that so many people are still in the dark about Network Marketing or MLM. While I agree that network marketing organizations are configured in the form of a pyramid, so are billion dollar corporations, schools and churhes.

It is not illegal. Nor should it be.

In normal corporate management, you start at the bottom and have to try to pass those above you (good luck!) In most cases, it takes 25-40 years to move up that pyramid.

In network marketing, you also start at the bottom but can pass anyone who is above you in your line of sponsorship. You are not limited. In network marketing, you have the option to do in 2-5 years what takes most people 25-40 years (if they ever make it) to do the conventional way.

MARY AND WAYNE do an excellent job explaining network marketing and offer a system to literally make your first million.

Going back to my opeing line, why am I happy and amused about the critics of network marketing? It's very simple, when this great method of marketing becomes obvious to the masses, the opportunity will be gone. As long as there will be critics, there will also be critics. Sort of like franchising back in the 60's (franchising was almost shut down by the government in 1963) At that time, nobody would touch it. Now you can't get a good franchise in a good location anymore. It will happen to MLM too. That is why I am building now before that happens.

Good book Wayne and Mary. I am recommending this to everyone in my downline.

          5 out of 5 stars Re: semi-legal pyramid scheme.......2004-05-11

Alot of people think that network market is a semi-legal pyramid scheme, but not all network marketing companies are a pyramid. If many of you do your research, you'll see that companies such as life plus, melaleuca, market america, etc. are true network marketing companies they'll really compensate you if you refer people to their company & products. Before anyone pre-judges a network marketing company, do your research on each company, plan, products, etc. The true pyramid schemes are the one's that you get in the mail that ask you to send between a $1 - $5 to each name & address, and in return, you'll make millions within a few months...that's a true pyramid scheme, I know because I've lost money to these pyramids through the mail. I now know how to tell the difference between a pyramid & a real opportunity. These pyramid schemes give real & great network marketing companies a bad reputation. So again, do your research on a company before enrolling or sending out money. There are truly real gold mines out there, so please do your research by reading articles on them, and check the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) . Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome true story of determination!!!.......2006-01-11

I read this book for a college class this past semester and was truely amazed at how well this book was written. This book is basically broken down into three parts, all equally intersesting. The first part is based in Maggies story, her life, struggles and amazing accomplishments. The second part is all about the author, James, who is also Maggies son. The story of "Maggie's American Dream" is an excellent representation of a family that went through tough times and prevailed through a combination of church, education as well as being "taught and strongly encouraged to develop the needed social skills and personal controls." Maggie raises her family during a time when it was difficult to be a black person in America. Maggie was ridiculed and pushed away from any opportunities simply because of the color of her skin. Maggie became a wonderful mother, which I feel is the most important part of this story. Her son James tells the stories of how he was raised. These are stories of a mother that attended all sporting events, assisting her children in becoming talented at several different activities ranging from playing the piano to playing sports. Maggie was always there for her family. She taught them right from wrong as well as a strong sense of that "never give up" attitude. These children continue to strive to do their best in anything they did, even during a time when they were held back from doing just that. This is an example of how a family can make it through most adversities as long as they all stick together and work towards their goals and dreams.

Wonderful book Mr. Comer and thank you for opening my eyes to a great story.

4 out of 5 stars The Remarkable Life of a Determined Mother.......2005-06-29

Comer tells the story of his family by focusing on the remarkable life of his mother, Maggie Comer, whose determination helped her survive poverty and segregation in the South and discrimination in the North to raise of family of successful children. The first half of the book is told in Maggie's own words. The second half is in Comer's. An excellent example of the broader social migration of black families from the South to the North following Reconstruction.

5 out of 5 stars An 'American Dream' Realised.......2003-05-06

I did a research study on American Dream in America during the 20s-30s decade. I've read a lot of books concerning the subject; literary works, forming the main portion of my resources. These ranged from Fitzgerald's 'Great Gatzby' to Steinbeck's 'Grapes of Wrath', from Dreiser's 'An American Tragedy' to Lewis's 'Main Street'. In addition to these quite old literary works, I collected statistical, analytical information about the particular decades, to verify what I've acquired from the novels. It was a hard study, but I managed to write a reasonably concise thesis, with the help of not the sources I listed, but with this book, 'Maggie's American Dream' instead. Why?

Almost all of the books I've read were productions of imagination. Even Dreiser, who was inspired from a real account, did not stick to facts in his book, but altered them to create a fiction. However, 'Maggie's American Dream' is a true story. It is told from James Comer's point of view, in a very poetical fashion. The second part of the book is his mother's story, which is again expressed by James. The book also contains a nice section of pictures of the Comer family, which are quite interesting after reading about the family.

James P. Comer had a very hard childhood, as it could be expected during the years of never-ending racism issues. Comer beautifully expresses how they managed to stand tall, and get their share in the competition of living. Mr. Comer is now working as a psychiatrist in New Haven, after having completed his doctoral work in Yale University. It is a dream that is realised, indeed.

This book will provide you with a lot of insights about the lives of black families, American societal norms, family relations during the 20s and 30s, which you cannot find easily in any other source this clearly and truely.

5 out of 5 stars I didn't want the story to come to an end ...........2002-04-07

What a wonderful book. Very easy to read with lots of short chapters so that even the busiest of us can get through it quickly. And of course Maggie and her family are so real that you find you can't put the book down...you just have to find out what happens to them all next.
It's a great story, and worth reading from that angle alone. But all the way through this book also gives you plenty to ponder - whether you are someone with an interest in education (and doesn't that include all parents?), someone who wishes that all people had an equal opportunity to realise their potential, or someone who really wants to know what life is like for others from different backgrounds and countries. The author also inspires us to think about how we can make a difference, in some small way, wherever and whoever we are.

5 out of 5 stars Maggies American Dream.......2001-10-09

                Book Description

In the history of the twentieth century, the role of the military intelligence services in the competition among nations is still murky. Among the world's foremost intelligence services, those of Imperial Japan remain the least known. Few stories are as compelling as those surrounding the Japanese Army's Nakano School. From 1938 to 1945, the Nakano School trained more than 2,000 men in intelligence gathering, propaganda, and irregular warfare. Working in the shadows, these dedicated warriors executed a range of missions, from gathering intelligence in Latin America to leading commando raids against American lines in Papua New Guinea, in the Philippines, and on Okinawa. They played major roles in operations to subvert British rule in India, and they organized Japanese civilians into guerrilla units that would have made the invasion of Japan a bloodbath. One graduate used his Nakano commando training to elude U.S. and Philippine military patrols until emerging from the jungle nearly thirty years after the war's end. In the decades after World War II, graduates of the school worked to obtain from the United States and Russia the release of imprisoned war criminals and the recovery of lost territory, including Okinawa.

Based on archival research and the memoirs of Japanese veterans, The Shadow Warriors of Nakano shines a much-needed light into the shadows of World War II and postwar Japanese affairs.

                4 out of 5 stars A great book. .......2006-08-05

Mercado's effort has been sorely needed in the English-language scholarship on Imperial Japan and WWII for a long time and he has finally told it. Alot of the episodes related in the book were not unknown to me before picking this one up - Japan's use of Aung San in Burma and Subhas Bose and the INA, or Hiro Onoda's matriculation through the Nakano School for another. However, there was ample detail that I had little idea of before reading this, particularly about Japanese covert ops in New Guinea and Okinawa which is great reading and highly informative. The section on Nakano officers after the war makes the Allied drafting of German intell people during "Operation Paperclip" look insignificant by comparison. I thouroughly enjoyed this one.

The Shadow Warriors Of Nakano: A History Of The Imperial Japanese Army's Elite Intelligence School by intelligence and national security historian Stephen C. Mercado is a meticulous examination of the military educational institution that educated Japanese spies, intelligence officers, and commandos between the years of 1938 and 1945. Tracing their lethal effectiveness during World War II, and following the careers many veterans had after the war (some worked with American intelligence, while others rose to notable positions in the Japanese industry or government), The Shadow Warriors Of Nakano is an extensively researched and superbly presented treasury of little-known, specialized details and a uniquely valuable addition to World War II Pacific Theatre Military Studies collections.

4 out of 5 stars The indispensible missing story.......2003-08-26

History is written by winners, that is an irrefutable fact. The tragedy is that a portion of the truth tends to die, or at least to whither on the vine. This is certainly true of the intelligence contest in the second world war.

This book is important and necessary for us to understand the workings of Japanese military intelligence during the second world war. There are precious few works on Axis intelligence, although some have come to light recently. As for Japanese intelligence efforts, these are poorly and thinly documented at best, notwithstanding the evidence obtained before various war crimes tribunals. Mercado seeks to correct this by describing the training of Japan's second bureau, and the exploits of its officers upon leaving its school at Nakano.

With this before him, Mercado could have produced the seminal work on the subject, but somewhat missed his opportunity. Let me start with my complaints about the book.

The author could have made a more thorough job of providing a history of Japanese espionage, which had a long domestic history during the Shogunate. This was not done, nor did he adequately explain the contribution of the French military to the organisation of the Japanese Army, and its intelligence service in particular.

My other criticism is that while Mercado has done a good job of explaining how the Nakano school was established, and introducing some of its key instructors, he does little to exlain the curriculum in great depth. This would have been important to understand what really was taught, and the impact of the instruction upon the the school's graduates, as well as Japanese intelligence gathering across the Pacific theatre.

Having said all of that, I should also praise the book for its strengths, of which there are many. First, and foremost, this book is the only work in English attempted on the Nakano school. To achieve this, Mercado used his own experience as an intelligence analyst and "Japanese hand" as well as extensive interviews with veterans, and research in the Japanese language press.

Mercado also traces many of the graduates of Nakano after graduation, and describes their contribution to the Japanese war effort, including their part in the expression of Indian nationalism prior to Independence.

More important than all of this, the author explains what happened to the "Shadow Warriors" after the end of the war, how many were taken on board by the Americans, and the important role they played in winning the Korean War. Others went into business or politics, and drew upon their networks to create the modern Japan we see today.

For its strengths, I would like to give this book five stars, but for its flaws I cannot. I only trust the author will do a second and more thorough edition so that achievements of Japan's shadow warriors are properly recorded for posterity.

                3 out of 5 stars A Worthy Book.......2003-05-12

Mercado chose a subject well worth writing about. Military intelligence is a critical, but often underexamined part of military history. Any good student of military history knows how critical collecting intelligence and keeping secrets is to success in war, but how often do you see books on how information is collected, how secrets are kept, and about who does all of that?

The story of the Nakano School's graduates is an interesting one and their field operations were fascinating. Those familiar with the hidebound reputation of Imperial Japanese Army officers during the war will find the creative and independent Nakano-trained intelligence officers and their work to be fascinating. In many ways, one gets the feeling that the harsh, brutal and inflexible militancy of their own Army was a greater opponent than the enemy! These excellent soldiers were involved in everything from spying to propaganda to the nationalist subversion of Allied colonial holdings.

Mercado then goes on to follow the Nakano graduates into the post-war world, including their very important role in Occupied Japan, their work with the Americans during the Cold War, and other noteworthy endeavors. Judging from their wartime performance and their post-war success, one could truly say that the Nakano graduates represented some of the best and brightest of their generation.

The book makes for fascinating reading, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested either in intelligence, military history or Japan in general. The only reason why I cannot give it four stars is because I found the editing to be sloppy in spots.

                Book Description

Reclaiming the Ivory Tower examines the situation of adjunct professors in U.S. higher education today, describes the process of organizing them to improve their conditions of work, and puts forward an agenda around which adjunct labor can mobilize and transform the universities.

In the last twenty years, higher education in the United States has been eroded by massive reliance on temporary academic labor—professors without tenure or prospect of tenure, without benefits, working without offices or research assistance, often commuting between several campuses, and paid a fraction of the salaries of the tenured colleagues. Contingent faculty now constitutes the majority of faculty at U.S. colleges and universities.

Analyzing the changing composition of the academic workforce, assessing the strength of new organizing initiatives among adjuncts, and weighing up their strategic options, this is the most comprehensive and engaged account to date of an issue that will become increasingly important for the future of higher education in the United States and in the global context.

Berry has assembled the elements of one of the higher education's biggest challenges - contingent faculty.

Using the familiar style, Berry's book provides a time-check on part-time faculty's situation, and is supported by examples, sufficient qualitative and quantitative analysis, and an honest assessment by Berry.

At first scan, the book's organization appeared to be disjointed, but a subsequent thorough read revealed a linkage between the many complex issues surrounding the contingent faculty challenge.

I found the book a good resource for research on the changing hiring patterns in higher education. Plus, it helped me to better understand the faculty who report to me.

                reviewed by:
                Martin M. Goldstein
                Santa Monica College

My father, a New York lawyer and political liberal of long standing, used to refer to certain airy intellectuals as people who were "very smart, but had no brains." This concept kept coming back to me as I read Joe Berry's analysis of the current state of higher education in America. His discussion centers on a workforce transformed in one generation from one of almost exclusively full-time tenure track positions -- the traditional "Professor" -- to one where such positions are now the minority.

Sometime in the mid-90's a majority of college teachers became contingent laborers, as either part-time or full-time temporary -- not counting the routinely abused grad students, or the growing for-profits and non-credits, where contingency comes standard. This new class of professors have fewer benefits (like job security or health insurance) and lesser pay, and are doing the majority of the work.

If such a thing happened to auto workers or nurses or elementary school teachers, we'd have seen them permanently weakened as union bargaining units. Rather, this happened to college professors, very smart people who seemingly did not have enough brains to prevent their job positions from eroding before their eyes, effectively disappearing in their working lifetimes.

All of this and more is covered eloquently in Joe Berry's new book, which clearly lays out the current situation and focuses in on the largest and most exploited part of this new professoriat, the contingent academic laborer, the part-time teacher, the fabled freeway flyer who is more often in LA a gridlock groaner. Part historical analysis, part organizing handbook, Berry's book places both the problem and the solution on the table.

Essentially a market force model has been introduced to the academy, and when that happens, you get a situation like Santa Monica College where I teach, a highly-respected community college which now has 286 full-time teachers, and 995 contingents who teach a little over 50% of FTES's, although state law mandates a 75/25 FT/PT floor for this ratio. Money talks, and market forces have spoken louder than state appropriations, public pressure, or union negotiations in the last three decades. So much for the Master Plan -- this is cheaper.

But there are signs of change, and the defeat of Gov. Schwarzenegger's anti-labor initiatives recently may be a turning point. It gives one pause, however, to imagine how that election would have turned out if the firefighters and nurses and grade-school teachers had let happen to them what happened to the professoriat. Fortunately, they had enough brains not to.

This new force for this change comes mainly, as would be expected, from the exploited class, which is developing a class consciousness, and good old fashioned labor organizing is shaping it into a movement. Joe Berry is a contingent labor activist of long-standing in California and Chicago, one of the founders of COCAL, the Conference of Contingent Academic Labor, a national coordinating group for the burgeoning movement, as well as a teacher and organizer in the Chicago area. He knows whereof he speaks.

The "do's" and "don'ts" of organizing on your campus and in your region is the heart
of Berry's book, and his decades of experience in the trenches of labor organizing show up in the completeness and the conceptual rigor of his analysis. If you are mad as hell and don't want to take it any more, don't go to a window and shout. Rather, buy this book, read it carefully -- and then do something about it!

It's that kind of a book. Berry's clear sense of moral purpose, as evidenced by his title, comes through on every page. This is someone who is not just complaining or explaining, but working to better the world of higher education while doing both those things. It's a truly admirable task, and he has written a truly admirable book about it.

                  Book Description

In 1990, when Vince Smith—currently manager of the Diane Fossey Gorilla Fund's mountain gorilla conservation program— was working as a senior keeper at Chester Zoo in the English countryside, a newborn chimpanzee in his care was abandoned by her mother. Named Sophie, the infant chimp was taken home and hand-reared by Vince and his wife. Six months later another new baby arrived: Oliver, their son. A Chimp in the Family is the compelling and entertaining account of Sophie’s life. Vince Smith vividly describes the parallel upbringing of Sophie and Oliver—through her early years with Vince and his family, her traumatic journey back to the zoo and her unsuccessful efforts to socialize with other chimps, her repatriation to Africa and reunion with her human foster family, and her integration in a semi-wild group of chimpanzees. A book both humorous (a family outing with both babies to the local pizzeria) and ultimately heartbreaking, A Chimp in the Family provides fascinating photographs and insights into the nature of our closest-living relatives—as well as the nature of human development.

This is a profoundly touching book. You will feel a lot of very strong emotions of all kinds reading it, and the end is devastating. Smith does a great job showing us the great spirit and soul of Sophie. My wife and I felt his loss keenly, and had tears. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful, delightful book! I picked it up not knowing much about chimps, but the thought of raising one along with your own child was an amusing and amazing premise. The book never fails to be loving, interesting, and educational all at once. The author loved his little chimp just as he loved his wife and child, and his expressions of love and knowledge about the various animals (mostly chimpanzees) he talks about in this book are lovely. Man can often be very cruel and foolish and stupid, whereas it seems animals are just themselves. They can survive in all sorts of man-made zoos and such, with nary a complaint. Sophie, the chimp in this book, was a special and loving little creature who will grab your heart. Thank you to Vince Smith for sharing your deepest heart with us.

A Chimp in the Family is the true story of an ecologist and conservationist who took an infant chimpanzee into his home when she was abandoned by her mother. Six months later, his son was born. A Chimp in the Family is the unique account of rearing two babies side by side as one's own kin. Offering heartfelt tales of struggling with infant care and the milestones of early childhood, A Chimp in the Family also offers the unique difficulties in attempting to persuade a hand-reared chimpanzee to socialize with others of its kind. Happiness and heartbreak blend in A Chimp in the Family, which details social and emotional bonds between humans and animals from an intensely personal point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Unsentimental and touching.......2004-08-21

this book proved far better than many similar works about raising baby animals. it is well written and not excessively sentimental or anthropomorphic, though the author does discuss the close relationship between chimps and humans, genetically and behaviorally.

be prepared: it has an unhappy ending.

                  definitely worth a read.
