Book Description

ELEANOR OF CASTILE looks at the wife of Edward I of England, a woman eulogized since the sixteenth century as a model of virtuous womanhood and queenly excellence who overcame the impediment of her foreign birth to win all English hearts. By exploring Eleanor's behavior and the ways in which it was interpreted by her subjects, John Carmi Parsons overturns this view and shows that Eleanor's contemporaries actually had quite a different opinion of their queen.

5 out of 5 stars An exemplary study!.......2001-06-14

This is a wonderful book that discusses not only Eleanor, but the institution of queenship in medieval England. Parsons is a master at looking at a subject from a variety of disciplinary approaches and angles. Readers should be warned it presumes a thorough knowledge of thirteenth-century European politics, though.

    Book Description

Charley Rosen, author of New York Times Notable Books of the Year Barney Polan's Game and The House of Moses All-Stars, gives us an engaging look into the rise and fall of a brilliant but corrupt basketball legend. Jack Molinas had everything: good looks, charm, brains, and a talent for basketball that made him an NBA All-Star. He was also a swindler and gambler deeply involved with the Mafia, and he had been fixing games since high school. After he was arrested in 1954 and banned from the NBA, Molinas created a gambling empire that had dozens of college teams rigging games for him. Drawn from numerous firsthand accounts, The Wizard of Odds examines Jack Molinas's life, from a sparkling beginning to his gruesome murder in 1975.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story about a guy who just refused to live an honest life, despite his amazing gifts.......2007-03-17

Born to a great family and blessed with amazing athletic prowess, Jack Molinas just couldn't go straight. Brilliant by all standards of measurement, he seemed to have absolutely no way to determine right from wrong, and would always lie, cheat, or steal if he could get away with it. He developed a love of gambling early in his life, and would do anything to win in his lifetime obession with sports betting. If he couldn't bribe or convince a player to throw a game, he would spike their food to make them too sick to play. He would stop at nothing to get his way. Even an unpleasant prison term didn't stop him, and he died in a hail of bullets at his Hollywood Hills home at the hands of other criminals and sociopaths.

An awesome book full of detail for the sports fan and lover of true crime stories.

4 out of 5 stars A cautionary tale of misused talents............2004-08-21

Besides being well over six feet tall, Jack Molinas stood above the basketball competition he faced in other ways. His I.Q. was a whopping 175 and he used his native itelligence and skills on the court to fix college games for Columbia during the 50's. Later on, he was suspended from the N.B.A in his rookie season for working the same scams there. The culmination came with the basketball scandals of the early 60's and his arrest and subsequent five-year prison sentence. After leaving the 'big house' he turned his talents to upholding the law by becoming a renowned lawyer. He had spent his life manipulating and lying to people so it seemed a natural fit that he eventually moved to California with a girl friend and became a porn producer. Ultimately, his mob ties from his fix days and shady connections caught up with him however. Apparently, he had welshed on sports bets to bookies connected with La Cosa Nostra. Obviously, a very dumb thing to do for someone gifted with his level of intelligence. He was shot by unknown assailents in his home in 1974. Clearly, out of all the people he cheated in his life, the author of this book makes very clear that the person he ultimately short-changed the most was himself.

    2 out of 5 stars BORING.......2003-04-15

This is probly the most boring book I have ever read. I have read alot of basketball books and by far this is one of the worst. It seemed interesting so I bought it. Then it started out all right but by page 100 I could not keep reading it I just lost interest. I would not reccomend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A terrific read........2002-06-17

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. Jack was a person with a great deal of athletic and intellectual talent. However, I thought he blurred the line between life and the game of basketball.

I was never interested in sports when I was growing up, but this book has certainly sparked my interest. It was a mind opening experience.

How did I come to read this book, considering my lack of interest in sports? I heard it reviewed on Nat'l. Public Radio. When I heard the name Jack Molinas, I remembered an athletically inclined boy that attended PS 33 and PS 79 with me. My memories of him in school were good so I think of his life as he felt compelled to live it as a tragedy.

2 out of 5 stars fiction disguised as fact.......2002-03-16

This book is a work of fiction. The list of errorsis too great to warrant a non-fiction label. The author makes the case that Molinas is a habitual liar. So,why would Rosen print Molinas comments in interviews other sports writers had with him without corroboration. There is no doubt that Molinas was an unusual character with huge talents who preferred to break all the rules, making him a tragic figure. It is hard to enjoy this read, because there is no way to discern truth from fantasy.I think Molinas had the last laugh with his creative tales to writers. He figured they would accept his stories as the gospel...Bob Reiss

5 out of 5 stars One of my Favorite Cryptogram Books.......2006-04-07

I have been doing cryptogram puzzles for quite a few years now, and there's nothing like the feeling of "breaking the code", and finding the hidden message lying within what appears to be just an unintelligible jumble of letters.

One of the things I really like about "The Great Book of Cryptograms" is that the puzzles, once solved, provide you with a meaningful, thought-provoking quote - and each "chapter" is filled with quotes from the same person (such as Aristotle & Aesop).

Because the author provides a thorough set of instructions re: how to go about solving this type of puzzle, this book is perfect for the novice and pro alike.

If you like cryptograms, or just enjoy trying to break codes, I highly recommend "The Great Book of Cryptograms" - it's one of the best I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent book for Beginners - Maybe One Major Mistake.......2005-05-20

As I said in the title, and many other reviewers have pointed out, this is an excelent book for beginners in the stock market. Even more if you're confused by the array of stocks to buy and techniques to select them.

Having said that, I must point out one major flaw that I think the authors have made when writing the book. In the first chapters they mention the total return that an investor would have received from SP500 in the 70s based in the index itself and with the dividends reinvested.

In my opinion, being the SP500 a total return index, i.e. one in which the reinvestment of dividends is included, the total return should be the same. Nonetheless the idea makes a point in showing the importance of dividend reinvestment policies.

Besides this minor mistake, the book is an excelent read and guide to the stock market.

5 out of 5 stars Dividends, the key to investing success.........2005-01-03

This is a very good book, and simple to read for even novice investors. A note, the entire book deals only with US listed stocks, so, to buy any of the stocks listed here, you need a broker with access to US markets.

The book covers compounding of dividends, a very, very important subject. It also warns about selecting stocks with yields that are too high, and unlikely to be maintained, or stocks which have a high yield, but are cyclical.

This is a very good book, for anyone, who might be considering thier retirement investment strategy.

A word of warning: This book is not about returns of 2000% per annum. Dividends are dull and boring. But, they make a good basis for investment.

4 out of 5 stars The Dividend Rich Investor.......2002-08-06

A very good book on how to buy common stocks directly from the company. I have a friend who is a stock broker at a major firm and all the scams that go on there I am shocked that more stock brokers are not doing time. Even main stream firms stink of the boiler room. They push the stock of the day and most brokers know little to nothing about the market, they're just there to sale the stock the firm tells them to sale. Total boiler room hype!
Drips are the best way to buy stock. Why pay stock broker fees. Buy direct. Save money. This book tells you how.

4 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for beginners.......2000-06-18

It's not exactly the most glamorous way to invest in stocks, but selecting good quality dividend paying stocks is a great way to earn passive income over a long period of time.

This book contained a few lists of stocks with average yields and so forth which I found helpful, but the sheer amount of numbers became mind numbing at times. Overall, I found some really good information in here about how to select reliable dividend paying stocks and which ones to avoid. Some of the issues covered were companies that regularly increase their dividend yield, how to aggressively buy stocks in companies which have actually cut their dividend recently. I was surprised that the authors advocated buying stocks with low, but increasing yields. After reading that chapter, I can see their point. If you want to chase high growth, high paying stocks, don't go for dividend paying stocks.

I'm giving this book 4 stars because I think it provides much valuable, but basic, information. This book will only appeal to novice or beginning investors who know little or nothing about dividend paying stocks. If you're more of an advanced investor who likes buying high flying Internet stocks, you can skip this book. Dividend investing is a very conservative, long term investment method, and if that's what you're looking for, by all means buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best investment advice.......2000-01-21

The dividend investing approach illustrated in this book is perhaps the most under-rated, under-promoted investment strategy. It's not as exciting as investing in internet stocks, but it's very easy to implement and it can create an amazing income for life. I especially recommend this book for young investors.

                        Book Description

They forever changed America: Lucy Stone, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frances Willard, Alice Paul. At their revolution’s start in the 1840s, a woman’s right to speak in public was questioned. By its conclusion in 1920, the victory in woman’s suffrage had also encompassed the most fundamental rights of citizenship: the right to control wages, hold property, to contract, to sue, to testify in court. Their struggle was confrontational (women were the first to picket the White House for a political cause) and violent (women were arrested, jailed, and force-fed in prisons). And like every revolutionary before them, their struggle was personal.

For the first time, the eminent historian Jean H. Baker tellingly interweaves these women’s private lives with their public achievements, presenting these revolutionary women in three dimensions, humanized, and marvelously approachable.

                        5 out of 5 stars A powerful, well-documented, tell-all about the lives of the 1st American Suffragists.......2006-11-26

This book was very thought and emotion provoking. A must read for all women. Women must never forget the gargantuan struggle our foremothers endured to gain something so powerful---the right to vote. You'll be appalled at the night of terror these women, up to 70 years of age, endured by hostile cruel men.

The vote is only the beginning of equality, however. Without actually voting, the right to vote serves no purpose.

Last note is that this extremely well-documented book is very open about the uncomfortable topic of the sexual proclivities of some of these suffragists. It was disturbing to me that some of these very Christian women could have lesbian tendencies, but apparently these accounts come directly from letters they wrote to others. Thankfully, it is not a book that argues for or against lesbianism; it just documents the part it played, if any, in these women's lives. God does say in the Bible that women may be the physically weaker sex, but they ARE EQUAL to men in God's sight.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book!.......2006-03-07

Before reading this book, I had basically no idea about anything dealing with the Suffrage movement, except that it was Susan B. Anthony who was on a coin (and this was even after taking a college-level US History course). This book is a MUST for any person who wants to get a general overview not only about five of the most influential women in the Suffrage Movement, but also of the movement overall. It doesn't have any "boring" parts, and is all information that everyone should know. I can't recommend it enough!

                          Book Description

Roswell Lamson was one of the boldest and most skillful young officers in the Union navy. Second in the class of 1862 at Annapolis (he took his final exam while at sea during the war), he commanded more ships and flotillas than any other officer of his age or rank in the service, climaxed by his captaincy of the navy's fastest ship in 1864, USS Gettysburg. Now, in Lamson of the Gettysburg, we have the war-time letters of this striking naval figure. What's more, these are letters of exceptional quality. James M. McPherson, co-editor of the collection with his wife Patricia and one of America's preeminent Civil War historians, writes that "few sets of letters equal and none surpass those of Lamson for richness of description, scope of coverage, or keenness of perception and analysis." Indeed, the McPhersons term Lamson's correspondence "the best Civil War navy letters we have ever read or expect to read." Throughout the war, Lamson always seemed to be where the action was on the South Atlantic coast, and these letters describe with striking immediacy the part he played in these events. While serving on the USS Wabash, for instance, he directed the big deck guns that did the most damage to enemy forts at Hatteras Inlet and Port Royal, two major naval victories. He was the officer who took command of the CSS Planter in May 1862, when slaves led by Robert Smalls ran her past Confederate fortifications in Charleston harbor and delivered her to the Union fleet. He commanded a gunboat fleet on the Nansemond River that helped stop James Longstreet's advance on Norfolk. In a daring attempt to blow up Fort Fisher, the huge earthwork fortress that guarded the entrance into the Cape Fear river, he towed the USS Louisiana (packed with more than two hundred tons of gunpowder) directly under the guns of the fort, sneaking into the shallows behind a rebel blockade runner, (Lamson describes "a terrific explosion. An immense column of flame rose towards the sky, and four distinct reports like that of sharp heavy thunder were heard and a dense mass of smoke enveloped everything"). And a few weeks later, he led a contingent of seventy men from the Gettysburg as part of the January 15, 1865 assault on the sea-face parapets of Fort Fisher, where he himself was wounded and his close friend, Samuel W. Preston, died. The letters also capture the spirited personality of Lamson himself, resolved to "stand by the Union as long as there is a plank afloat," but also deeply ambivalent about the war. In a moving passage early in the collection, he describes leaving Annapolis for war duty on the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides): "We gave three cheers for Capt R., three for the troops, and for old friendship's sake three for those of our number who intending to resign [to join the Confederacy] were requested not to go on board. Some of my best friends were among them. This will be a sad sad war. It will be more painful to strike than to be struck." The publication of the letters of Roswell Lamson marks a major addition to Civil War literature. Featuring superb introductions to each section as well as informative notes that explain references in the correspondence to people, ships, land and sea battles, or homefront news, Lamson of The Gettysburg now joins the first rank of Civil War sources. One of the few accounts we have from the perspective of a navy officer, it is a book that everyone interested in the Civil War or in American naval history will want to read.

                                        Book Description

While antiliberal legal theorist Carl Schmitt has long been considered by Europeans to be one of this century’s most significant political philosophers, recent challenges to the fundamental values of liberal democracies have made Schmitt’s writings an unavoidable subject of debate in North America as well. In an effort to advance our understanding not only of Schmitt but of current problems of liberal democracy, David Dyzenhaus presents translations of classic German essays on Schmitt alongside more recent writings by distinguished political theorists and jurists. Neither a defense of nor an attack on Schmitt, Law as Politics offers the first balanced response to his powerful critique of liberalism.
One of the major players in the 1920s debates, an outspoken critic of the Versailles Treaty and the Weimar Constitution, and a member of the Nazi party who provided juridical respectability to Hitler’s policies, Schmitt contended that people are a polity only to the extent that they share common enemies. He saw the liberal notion of a peaceful world of universal citizens as a sheer impossibility and attributed the problems of Weimar to liberalism and its inability to cope with pluralism and political conflict. In the decade since his death, Schmitt’s writings have been taken up by both the right and the left and scholars differ greatly in their evaluation of Schmitt’s ideas. Law as Politics thematically organizes in one volume the varying engagements and confrontations with Schmitt’s work and allows scholars to acknowledge—and therefore be in a better position to negotiate—an important paradox inscribed in the very nature of liberal democracy.
Law as Politics will interest political philosophers, legal theorists, historians, and anyone interested in Schmitt’s relevance to current discussions of liberalism.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas served on the Court for 36 years. He wrote more opinions and more dissents than any other Justice. Douglas was described as an invigorating presence on the Court and possessed unusual stamina, an unyielding will, and enormous courage.

Douglas's achievements on and off the Court were astonishing. He was an adventurer, jurist, and environmentalist, whose writings and actions impacted the country for many years. He was also a hiker and climber. He organized hikes and other actions to protect the C&O Canal near Washington, D.C., Olympic Beach and Glacier Peak in Washington State, the Buffalo River in Arkansas, and areas along the Appalachian Trail. He was a prophet, visionary, pioneer, scout, and pathfinder. In reading The Footpaths of Justice William O. Douglas: A Legacy of Place, one accepts Douglas's invitation to hike with him, to visit a place with him...and to "join him in a process of discovery and affirmation that is available to a free people in a spacious land."
