Book Description

This is the first biography of Eleanor of Provence. As consort of Henry III, from 1236 to 1272, Queen Eleanor has been noticed almost entirely for her promotion of Savoyards in England, but the significance of her political role goes far beyond this. Her performance as regent, her determined resistance to baronial reform and her key part in bringing about the fall of Simon de Montfort's government invite new appraisal. The book draws on the rich sources available, to reveal the interaction of the private and public facets of the queen's life, the cultural and spiritual influences to which she responded and the character of her queenship. Eleanor's changing relationships with her husband and her eldest son, the future Edward I, are here explored in both their personal and political context. The author looks finally at the years of Eleanor's widowhood, her entry into Amesbury still in control of her dower, and her death and commemoration in 1291. Eleanor of Provence provides an unusually intimate and coherent picture of a woman who combined a remarkable aptitude for politics with a strong family commitment and warm friendships. The book will be welcomed by all those interested in the workings of medieval politics and court life, and in the public and private role of queens.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Sound scholarship, readable prose.......2002-03-22

I concur with the excellent synopsis given by the previous reviewer and can only add that Howell has the rare and welcome gift of being able to produce sound scholarship, meticulously documented from the primary sources, that is accessible to the general reader as well as the academic audience for whom the book is primarily intended. This book, while remaining free from tiresome jargon, nevertheless places the subject within current academic discussion very well. She provides a model that I hope will be emulated by future scholars.

5 out of 5 stars New insights into medieval queenship.......1999-02-11

Son of the troubled King John, Henry III inherited his father's impoverished kingdom when he was but nine years of age. At 28, Henry married Eleanor of Provence in Canterbury Cathedral on January 14, 1236. The match with the twelve-year-old daughter of Raymond Bergengar, count of Provence was intended to forge an alliance that would protect the southern part of Henry's Angevin empire. Eleanor had never met her bridegroom nor had she ever visited England prior to her marriage.

Howell's biography of Eleanor of Provence looks at both the public and private aspects of Eleanor's life offering new insights into 13th century English history. Although it began as a dynastic match, Henry found in Eleanor a loving and supportive wife. She bore him nine children of whom four survived to adulthood. Yet in spite of the strength of their family life, Eleanor is remembered as one of the most despised of the English queens; in 1236 Londoners mobbed her barge and drove her to flee to the bishop of London's palace of St. Paul's. As she grows from child to woman we see Eleanor use the available avenues of power-patronage, arranged marriages, and ceremonial events- to benefit her family and her loyal corps of retainers who, throughout her life, formed the base of Eleanor's political strength. Indeed it was family relationships that were to be both the strength and weakness of Eleanor's queenship. Her devotion to her family and her single minded efforts to promote her foreign-born Savoyard relations put her at odds with the English nobility and eventually with her husband's family, all of whom were in competition for lands, titles, and lucrative marriages. As Howell comments, Eleanor "made intercession an art." However, throughout their marriage, Eleanor's support and connections to the French monarchy remained a key factor in Henry's ability to hold on to his throne. Howell gives a full picture of Eleanor of Provence; a woman of culture, complexity, loyalty and intelligence; but one unloved by her subjects. I would highly recommend it.

    Book Description

Follow the path of budo--the warrior’s code of conduct--as it unfolds in the life of karate master Kancho Joko Ninomiya. Grandmaster of Enshin Karate and creator of the Sabaki Challenge, Kancho Ninomiya reveals how the spirit of feudal Japanese warriors inspired him as a boy and continues to shape his life as a man. My Journey in Karate describes the rigors of Ninomiya’s early training in judo before a chance meeting introduced him to an innovative karate sensei who changed his life. In addition to Kancho Ninomiya’s own story, My Journey in Karate includes an extended section of Ninomiya’s reflections on training, competition, strategy, and the lessons of karate both in and out of the dojo.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Karate Book.......2005-10-20

My Journey In Karate: The Sabaki Way is a in depth book about Kancho Ninomiya's Journey though Karate. It describes how he won the All Japan Tournment and started the Enshin Karate Style. I am a Student of Enshin and Recommend the book to anyone who wants to read a great book about Karate. Two Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars highly recommended for all serious martial artists.......2003-06-19

Anyone who has been a serious martial artist will throughly enjoy reading the inspiring story of Grand Master of Enshin Karate Joko Ninomiya. Anyone who has been serious about the martial arts for a significant amount of time can relate to Ninomiya's life story.

Before beginning his study of kyokushin karate at the age of 15, Ninomiya practiced judo. After making the transition to karate, Ninomiya never turned back and had the dream of becoming a karate champion. The book explains how he would go to different karate schools in Japan and challenge the top students to improve his skills. He challenged different schools in a dignified way, he never used bully tactics. After hearing about the all-Japan karate tournement, Ninomiya practiced diligently for years until he was able to win first place. In the book, he talks about his training and preparation, his fights and the people who helped him become better as a martial artist and as a person.

I like the way Ninomiya emphasizes that karate is not about winning tournaments and beating people up, it's about confronting yourself and pushing beyond what you are today. Master Ninomiya admits that he did not realize the true meaning of karate until after he had accomplished one of his goals. Sometimes that's what it takes because after we win something or accomplish something big, we often ask ourselves "now what?" and become complacent. We should fight against this complacency because it will only make things harder in the long run.

Towards the end of the book, Ninomiya gives his opinion of "no holds barred" fighting contests. I agree with Ninomiya that "no holds barred" contests appeal to a morbid curiosity. People often watch these types of contests and are happy to see someone lying flat on their back at the end of a match or seriously hurt in some way. Ninomiya founded The Sabaki Challenge which is a real karate tournament, but he has a point system that emphasizes technique to minimize injuries.

5 out of 5 stars Oss! A Journey in Karate.......2003-04-27

Rarely in the martial arts world are biographies rich with insight about both the individual and the training. Normally, -except a couple bio accounts of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris' auto-bio account- the books are very dry and not very telling. Sometimes it is the writing and often it is because the reader is never really let under the skin of the martial artist. In this book - that has changed.

Ninomiya graciously allows the reader to travel in his mind and spirit as he grows from an unfocused (though hardworking)martial artist and somewhat immature teen into a higly skilled and mature warrior.

The reader travels and sees when Ninomiya, through several events and a couple of key mentors, understands himself and his journey through karate. Unlike most auto-biographical accounts, I never felt Ninomiya was boasting about his success. Instead, he shows where his failures and determined manner leads to success beyond winning a "trophy."

An excellent book. I learned much from this extra-ordinary man.

5 out of 5 stars A good martial arts book is as elusive as a good martial art.......2002-05-07

Kancho Ninomiya is not only a world class champion, he writes with a certain gift; one that captures the essence of a lesson one could only get from training with him... and make no mistake, this may make for an inspiring read but reading it without training in any martial art is as hollow as reading Shakespeare and never seeing it performed... I began studying karate very seriously as an adult under Sensei Kishi, one of Kancho Ninomiya's teachers and best friends, as well as a collaborator on this book... this text captures the true spirit of martial arts training, something that is very difficult by nature of the difference between the written word and the life of martial arts training. Osu.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and inspiring.......2000-12-23

I have been a martial artist for most of my life, and so have always been attracted to stories that outline other martial artists journeys. Joko Ninomiya has written a "must read" for anyone whose chosen path is the Way of the Warrior. He has done an outstanding job of outlining the highs and lows of a life dedicated to the "eight Fold Path". I was also moved by his love and respect for his Sensei and for his father. This book was much more than I expected and a wonderful addition to everyone's library.

      Book Description

Mike Hodges' bleak gangster film was released in 1971 to controversy and mixed reviews. Three decades later in the British Film Institute's millennial poll, the film was voted one of the 20 best British films of all time. Steve Chibnall's enjoyable and fresh account relates the film to others in its genre like Point Blank and Dirty Harry, profiles the people involved in its making and presents a fascinating analysis of the film text itself. He completes the story-so-far, looking at the critical reception, and cultural context and the two remakes: the 1972 blaxploitation film Hit Man and the new Stephen T. Kay movie, set in the US.

This guide is helpful and funny at the same time. For example, it gives you tips, and strategies on all 144 pages. Also it gives discriptions for everything in the game. When I said it was funny, I meant this because there is funny text, and doodles that are preferably drawn by Conker. I reccomend this one. Thanks.-

The lay out for this guide could of been better , but it does its job. This guide will do its job and help you throughout the game. The manufacturer of this guide have printed quite a few good guides and this one is okay and worth having, if you persevier then this guide will be helpful

        3 out of 5 stars Page Flipping.......2001-03-13

Its a great game and the guide is alright if you like page flipping. The maps were pretty good but the guide wasn't written in the order that you play the game. There is a hub type area called Windy that you have to keep returning to to further your progress in the game. In the Prima guide, you have to keep returning to the first chapter (Windy) to figure out what to do and then page ahead in the book and find where you go from there. The Brady Games book flows a lot better and they have a great multiplayer section!

        4 out of 5 stars Good, but.......2001-03-09

Prima usually produced excellent guides for all games, personally I never buy them. Why? Because we have the internet for FREE game guides now, and to be honest, the guides at ign64.ign.com are just... better. And free. So, pick this up is you're a completionist, but if you just need help check out gamefaqs.com or ign.com.

Mastering Technical Sales: The Sales Engineer?

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Detailed info on techniques and processes .......2006-07-06

This book is uniquely geared to the sales engineer role, not to general sales reps. Yet anyone selling technology products will learn from the detailed info on techniques and step-by-step processes for the technical sales cycle. Case studies and exercises supplement the book's discussion with real-world perspective. However, the book gives only a brief, passing reference to the role of marketing to support sales activity--an understanding that is valuable to every SE.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-02

I'm new to the Sales Role and this book is helping me a lot understand not only the process sales but how to deal with politics and things that make the technical sale.

5 out of 5 stars Essential tool that any SE be they new, experienced, or a manager should read cover to cover........2006-01-03

I was challenged a few months ago to explain in detail what makes up a Sales Engineer/Solutions Consultant? What does the role entail and what do you need to know to be successful? Well, if I'd read this book before that exercise then I'd have simply asked the technical trainer I was briefing to read this book!

Mastering Technical Sales, not to be mistaken with the similar sounding Making The Technical Sale by Greenwald & Milberry, is an excellent practical book that covers the needs of not just new SE's but also provides advice and knowledge for the more experienced SE, SE manager or even executive tasked with creating and maintaining an SE organisation. What I found particularly useful were the real world examples of both successful and unsuccessful practice - these lend a level of credibility and relevance to the material that perhaps the Greenwald & Milberry book lacks. (Btw, this is also a fine & very relevant book for any SE). I also particularly liked the chapter organization of summarizing the chapter goals, presenting the material, summary and then presentation of a skill-building summary for both the new SE and the experienced SE.

The book tackles pretty much every aspect of a typical SE's life from what type of person does it take and why do we do this? What do I need to do to be successful? What resources should I call upon? When? How? When & how to use executives. How to leverage corporate resources be they product management, engineering, technical support, marketing, or external resources such as partners. I thought the section on 'crossing over to the dark side' was particularly relevant and accurate as it covers the risks, the rewards and the reality of whether this is something that an SE should consider or not and more importantly, why or why not?

The book covers all the standard stuff very comprehensively from the sales process itself, presentation skills & techniques, objection and competition handling plus the realities of how to manage the sale to avoid the pitfalls of demos, succumbing to technical trials & evaluations or being driven by your competitor's agenda. All excellent material and covered well with real war stories.

Whilst this isn't the cheapest book on the subject, I'd definitely consider it worth every cent. Highly recommended.

Mastering Technical Sales provides a terrific foundation for the newly-minted Sales Engineer, a growth vehicle for the developing journeyman, and rich source-book for the seasoned professional.

While there are numerous "sales methodology" books available today, nearly all focus on the sales people and provide little or no information for the Sales Engineer and others who address the technical sale portion of the overall sales process. Mastering Technical Sales focuses on this critical area and shares how to manage and execute technical sales tasks to enjoy the highest success rates, both in the sales process and in one's professional growth.

5 out of 5 stars Real World Wisdom.......2004-04-17

As a professional technical sales consultant I enjoyed this book. I particularly like the real world examples and case studies for "tricky" sales situations. Even though I think of myself as a seasoned professional I learnt some new techniques and approaches from the book; especially in how to give a technical demonstration of a piece of software.

PS. I met one of the authors who was presenting at a product launch a few weeks ago in New York and got my book autographed.

          Book Description

Eighteen months after a parachute fall, Grylls overcame extreme weather conditions and months of limited sleep to reach the summit of the world's tallest mountain.

          Amazon.com

"Everest," writes British climber Bear Grylls, "is no place to prove yourself. The likelihood of reaching the summit is so slim that you're inevitably setting yourself up to be disappointed."

But, Grylls continues, mountains are most definitely an arena where alpinists express their deepest drives, and he had more ambition than most. Badly injured in a parachuting accident in 1996, he resigned his army commission and cast about for a new career--a decision he succeeded in putting off by enlisting in a climbing expedition to the world's tallest mountain. Now, Grylls points out, the odds of a well-conditioned climber's making the summit of Everest are something like one in a hundred; for climbers under the age of 30, who lack the experience and conditioning that age brings, those odds slim down to 1 in 1,000. Twenty-three at the time, Grylls took his chances nonetheless, despite the "sinking feeling that I had just made a commitment that was going to drag me a little too far out of my comfort zone."

He fulfilled his commitment, though surely not without discomfort, scared but determined, making his way up deadly obstacles such as the Lhotse Face Icewall and its deep crevasses. Other climbers were not so lucky, he writes in this you-are-there account of his time on the mountain, and death is a constant presence on these pages--which may deter readers who seek to follow in his footholds. For those content to travel up sheer rock and ice walls vicariously, though, Grylls's book is a spirited exercise in adventure writing and a promising debut. --Gregory McNamee

          5 out of 5 stars Exellent Read.......2007-08-31

This book is an excellent read. It shows all the training, risk, hardships, and triumph that come with reaching the top of the world. Bear shows his emotions and teaches his valuable survival skills. I really enjoyed the book and plan to read more of his work. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in outdoor adventure.

          4 out of 5 stars A Great Read .......2007-08-24

This book shows what determination and drive the author has in accomplishing his goals, which was to climb Mount Everest. I really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for fans of Man vs Wild.......2007-08-02

This is a great book for anyone who has seen Man vs Wild and is really wondering what its like to go through some of the life changing and life threatening experiences that this man goes through. This book not only takes you to Everest with him, but it also shows his personallity, his drive and determination, his attitude of never giving up (which is ultimately what keeps him alive), and a look at personal life and faith.

I typically don't read many books other than for studying but this was a great book and I couldn't put it down. Grylls doesn't just show you his journey, he takes you on the journey with him.

3 out of 5 stars From Eton to Everest..............2007-07-31

Bear has an easy and relaxed style of writing and uses more of a conversational technique in his prose with the added ingredient. He is humble in his abilities and also in his accomplishments. The book is a descriptive account of the full adventure to reach the peak of Everest. The writing is in dispersed with extracts from his own diary entries during the climb. The book provides a very good first hand account of the extreme difficulties and good fortune that are needed to successfully climb Everest.

Despite having an Eton education and a Tory MP as a father, Bear seems remarkably down to earth. However, the only disappointing aspect of the book is the constant reminder of the authors religious beliefs. These are tediously repeated and become more and more frequent as the levels of danger increase. They are needless and should be left to his bible classes and not to those who have paid good money to learn of his adventures.

All that is left to ask is does Bear really stay in hotels during the filming of Man vs. Wild??

          1 out of 5 stars Initial thoughts..........2007-07-05

I have not yet read the entirety of this book. This review is on the quality of the book itself, and not on its content.

I purchased The Kid Who Climbed Everest (The Lyons Press) because I enjoy Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild. As I flipped through the book, enjoying the pictures in the center insert, I discovered that the binding is already failing. The pages are starting to peel away from the spine, and I've only flipped the pages once.

It's rather dissappointing, though I expect I will like the content of the book very much.

In 1994, from the Lacandon jungle, Zapatista Subcomandante Marcos replied to a ten-year-old girl in Mexico City who had sent him a drawing. In his response, Marcos conjured up a first fable introducing the beetle and knight-errant “Don Durito de la Lacandon.”

The ensuing output of Durito-related communiqués and tales comprise a broad discourse of the Zapatistas’ struggle, revealing their organizational history, their critique of traditional politics, and the reasons for their opposition to neoliberalism. These elements have helped make the Zapatistas an exemplary reference in the international movement against capitalist globalization.

Conversations with Durito includes all the Durito stories issued to date, translated, annotated, and contextualized by the Áccion Zapatista Editorial Collective, and illustrated by simpático artists. Poetic, humorous, and imaginative, these fables provide an excellent introduction to the politics of globalization from the radical perspective of indigenous struggle.
