    Book Description

Published to substantial critical acclaim, Elizabeth I: Collected Works brought together for the first time in one volume the speeches, poems, prayers, and selected letters of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603), all in modernized spelling and punctuation. With this new volume, Janel Mueller and Leah S. Marcus give specialists fuller access to key originals of the queen's texts presented in Collected Works.

The originals selected for inclusion here are compositions that survive in Elizabeth's own handwriting, in English and in foreign languages, as well as her foreign language compositions preserved by other hands or in printed editions. Presented in transcriptions that reproduce the spelling and punctuation of their sixteenth-century sources, these texts convey many of the expressive and significant features of Elizabeth's writing. Through the transcriptions of texts in her own hand, readers can track the queen's language and compositional style-her choices of vocabulary and phrasing; her habits of capitalization, spelling, and punctuation; her often heavy revisions and redraftings; and her insertions of postscripts and second thoughts. The texts in foreign languages, meanwhile, will allow readers to prepare their own English translations from these original sources.

A unique resource for scholars of English literature and the Renaissance, this companion to the Collected Works offers much fuller and more detailed access to Elizabeth and her writings than can be obtained from the modern English versions alone.

The main problem with embarking on a career in 3-D graphics is one of choice--the tools are many, and the avenues for work are all over the map. It's difficult to choose a specific type of work, and often you don't even know the kind of question to ask to get started.

Consider 3-D Animation: From Models to Movies a compass, a road map, and even a means of transportation. This clearly written book puts the world of 3-D computer graphics into perspective for the novice who doesn't know a pixel from a polygon. Over the course of 15 chapters, the author discusses the very basics of computer graphics and how 3-D applications work, and then puts them in perspective against other applications of the genre.

3-D Animation introduces us to the digital workflow and how the 3-D world works--orientation, navigation, basic tools, expressions, and features common to most 3-D applications. By the third chapter, the book is deep into practical matters by starting off with modeling basics. Subsequent chapters cover texturing, lighting, rendering, and animation.

The best chapter is less about the craft of 3-D graphics and more about the business. Chapter 15, "Getting the Job," consists of a helpful five pages on how to get an interview, what job descriptions mean, generic dos and don'ts, and, more importantly, demo reel dos and don'ts. (No flying logos or spaceships, please!) Learning a skill is one thing; finding a job is another. This chapter offers solid advice for any first-timer.

There are few entry-level 3-D graphics books that come with a fully functioning 3-D application. The companion CD-ROM is a full working copy of the venerable Strata 3D application. Strata's been around for a while, and while Strata 3D doesn't have all the features that Strata Studio Pro does, it's still a very good application with full rendering and file-saving abilities.

If you don't own a 3-D application yet, this book and the software on the CD-ROM are a great way to get your virtual feet wet. --Mike Caputo

      5 out of 5 stars best 3d overview book I've seen yet.......2002-02-06

This is the best 3d overview book I've seen yet. The examples reference C4D, Lightwave, and Strata but most of the material would be relevant to almost any 3d application. I really enjoyed the lighting chapter (turns out ideas from stage lighting apply to 3D). There's a lot of good stuff in this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good headstart in 3D.......2000-11-08

The good things: -covers C4D (and screen shots of other apps) -offers great tuts in terms of making your own shaders and such. -the animation section is clearly written and a joy to follow -leads the newbie and intermediate 3D'r by the hand so you don't get lost.

The not so good: (*none* of which are the fault of Adam Watkins but rather the publisher) -all b/w but for a small 4 color insert -the b/w screen captures are a bit muddyand small making it difficult to make out details However, mention is made that there are full color pics of ALL book illustrations on the enclosed CD. -in the radiosity section (Pp 289) where a wireframe should be is the same grayscale photo just underneath...thereby making it tough to figure out the scene setup.

There are excellant examples of things we all have seen and some stuff we haven't from Alec Syme,Chad Griffiths, Ryan Crippen and of course Adam Watkins, to mention a few. Oh, and a couple "3d" pics from Phil McNally's Pump Action...you'll need your own set of red ans green lens 3D glasses for these pics.

Though there are many tuts for how to do this and that ... there are things like the metaballs pic by Alec that were not covered for a how to. That's just me though...I see a pic and want to know how'd he do that?

All in all the book is a must for your library... you'll go back and revisit it often.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone planning a birthday party. I don't feel that the sample pages shown on your website really do the book justice. This book is packed with so many ideas for each theme.
So far we have had the Wild West party and the Mystery party for my daughter, and the Pirate party for my son. My children's friends left the party with huge smiles on their faces. They tell us that our parties are the best parties that they have ever been to thanks to the ideas from this book.
We recently purchased this authors book Holiday Parties for Children and planned a Halloween party with many ideas from the book. That too was a success.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on decision making.......2005-11-05

This book discusses ten common errors that people make in decision making, and how to avoid them. When I first saw this title, I was not that interested, because I wanted a book on how to make decisions, not on the errors that people make. After reading it, I find the information to be very useful and practical. This is one of my all time favorite books, I go back to it every so often, and even after reading it a few times I find myself making some of the errors that are discussed in the text. Hopefully I don't make as many as I used to! I know the ideas in this book have been a very substantial help in improving my decision making process, and I am getting better as time goes by. Very highly recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this simple book about the process behind good decisions.......2005-10-24

I write about scientific careers, and one of my favorite books is Decision Traps. I recommend this book to anyone who is facing a major career decision, and who would like to separate the emotion from the facts in the decision process. Too often we cloud our decisions with personal feelings and ill-conceived "rules of thumb." This book will help you eliminate decision shortcuts which traditionally DON'T lead to the best answer. It worked for me in my personal life as well. Really helps you understand how your mind works.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Insightful, In a newer version.......2004-12-28

I read this book as part of a class in graduate school, and I found it to be quite practical, not only providing insights into ways that decisions can go wrong, but also steps that can be taken to reduce biases in your decisions due to errors in the process, although some of the strategies can only be effectively implemented at the organizational level.

I consulted this book because it was in two different bibliographies, one from my professor's notes, the other from Plous' book, "The Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making." What I didn't realize until after I had read this book was that it has been updated and reissued under a different name, "Winning Decisions : Getting It Right the First Time." If I were buying it again, I would order the newer version.

5 out of 5 stars Too much belief in personal judgment.......2004-06-26

Most decisionmakers make the same kinds of error. There needs to be a frame for each problem. There should be avoidance of plunging in and relying too heavily on supposed good judgment. Drawing boundaries are part of framing the questions. Managers are apt to draw narrow boundaries.

Sometimes there is a failure to draw a boundary line. There is the sunken cost fallacy, basing current and future changes in operation on past expenditures for equipment. One is influenced by reference points in the the problem frame. Some decisions make sense through several different frames. In such a case there can be certainty that the decision is a good one.

Good communicators align their communications with the listeners' frames. Virtually all people put too much trust in their own opinions. Most people favor data supporting current belief. Wrongly we associate confidence with competence. One should be a realist when making a decision and an optimist when implementing it. Rules of thumb and other decisionmaking shortcuts are called heuristics. The disadvantages of intuitive decisionmaking are more profound than people realize.

Members of groups may agree prematurely on wrong decisions. Groups may suffer from too much cohesiveness, harmony, pressure, insulation, and strong leadership. In group think people practice self-censorship, pressure others, give in to an illusion of invulnerability and erroneous stereotyping. Groups composed of people of mixed types of personality are useful--receptive versus focused and thinking versus feeling types.

The book is written in veritable outline form, presumably to get the attention of busy managers. It has a extensive notes supplementing the text giving a student of business and other fields an opportunity to pursue related lines of inquiry.

5 out of 5 stars A simple but high value management tool book.......2001-06-05

A comprehensive outline of the major 10 decision traps from decision psychology aspects.

I benefit a lot from the book's reminder on those "traps" which I have also committed some.

        A good value book.

Stephen Fry is not making this up! Fry started out as a dishonorable schoolboy inclined to lies, pranks, bringing decaying moles to school as a science exhibit, theft, suicide attempts, the illicit pursuit of candy and lads, a genius for mischief, and a neurotic life of crime that sent him straight to Pucklechurch Prison and Cambridge University, where he vaulted to fame along with actress Emma Thompson. He wound up starring as Oscar Wilde in the film Wilde, costarring in A Civil Action, and writing funny, distinguished novels.

This irresistible book, the best-written celebrity memoir of 1999, concentrates on Fry's first two tumultuous decades, but beware! A Fry sentence can lead anywhere, from a ringing defense of beating schoolchildren to a thoughtful comparison of male and female naughty parts. Fry's deepest regrets seem to be the elusiveness of a particular boy's love and the fact that, despite his keen ear for music, Fry's singing voice can make listeners "claw out their inner ears, electrocute their genitals, put on a Jim Reeves record, throw themselves cackling hysterically onto the path of moving buses... anything, anything to take away the pain." A chance mention of Fry's time-travel book about thwarting Hitler, Making History (a finalist for the 1998 Sidewise Award for Best Alternative History), leads to the startling real-life revelation that Fry's own Jewish uncle may have loaned a young, shivering Hitler the coat off his back.

Fry's life is full of school and jailhouse blues overcome by jaunty wit, à la Wilde. The title, from Psalm 108:9, refers to King David's triumph over the Philistines. Fry triumphs similarly, and with more style. --Tim Appelo

        Book Description

A number one bestseller in Britain that topped the lists there for months, Stephen Fry's astonishingly frank, funny, wise memoir is the book that his fans everywhere have been waiting for. Since his PBS television debut in the Blackadder series, the American profile of this multitalented writer, actor and comedian has grown steadily, especially in the wake of his title role in the film Wilde, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and his supporting role in A Civil Action.

Fry has already given readers a taste of his tumultuous adolescence in his autobiographical first novel, The Liar, and now he reveals the equally tumultuous life that inspired it. Sent to boarding school at the age of seven, he survived beatings, misery, love affairs, carnal violation, expulsion, attempted suicide, criminal conviction and imprisonment to emerge, at the age of eighteen, ready to start over in a world in which he had always felt a stranger. One of very few Cambridge University graduates to have been imprisoned prior to his freshman year, Fry is a brilliantly idiosyncratic character who continues to attract controversy, empathy and real devotion.

This extraordinary and affecting book has "a tragic grandeur that lifts it to classic status," raved the Financial Times in one of the many ecstatic British reviews. Stephen Fry's autobiography, in turns funny, shocking, sad, bruisingly frank and always compulsively readable, could well become a classic gay coming-of-age memoir.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An insight I was delighted to have.......2007-09-14

We all know Stephen Fry as the witty, urbane, polymath of entertainment that he has become. However it is interesting and, in certain ways, reassuring, to see that entertainers such as himself go through the same growing pains as the rest of us.

His autobiography 'Moab is my Washpot', charts his growth from a young schoolboy, through various adolescent crises, on to his successful graduation from school and his eventual path through to Oxford. His early school years have an almost Enid Blyton feel to them, evoking the beauties of an old fashioned English countryside upbringing, but without any overdone sentimentality.

The book also deals heavily with Fry's homosexuality and how this effected his youth. There doesn't seem to have ever been any real internal struggle for him, but the book still gives a fascinating and often very humourous account of his formative years as a homosexual student in an all male boarding school.

Fry's rapier wit is what often makes this book such a treat. All of the petty squabbles of his youth are brought under the blade of his humour with fantastically amusing consequences. Anyone who has enjoyed the acting or comedic pursuits of Mr. Fry will no doubt find this autobiography an engrossing and hilarious read.

3 out of 5 stars Not his best work.......2007-01-14

I think Stephen Fry is wonderfully talented-- as an actor and a writer. I very much enjoyed The Liar and Making History, two of his fictional forays. MOAB seemed disjointed, haphazzard... I believe that SF must have a very interesting life & life history, but this book did not express it. Was this written to fufill a contractual obligation? His heart just did not seem to be in it. Quite a shame.

5 out of 5 stars Like Wodehouse? You'll Like This........2006-03-15

Fry is a Wodehouse-worshipper, and his elegant prose shows it. This discursive, digressive, sometimes profane and endlessly entertaining bio covers Fry's youth (with much reminiscing about Public School days in the manner of Wodehouse's Psmith) and the development of his areligious (anti-religious?) and homosexual tendencies... well, they're more than tendencies, really, as you'll see.

I found this to be greatly amusing-- I'm glad I picked it up.

        4 out of 5 stars not bad, but . . ........2003-11-10

Most of this autobiography was quite enjoyable. Stephen Fry is clearly a gifted writer, and based on this book I might try some of his fiction. However, a great deal of the middle of this book, say 100 pages or more, are devoted to his explaining and defending and preaching on his homosexuality.

While I certainly don't begrudge him his right to tell his own story the way he wants and to spend time on what he finds important, this section really dragged on far too long. Aside from this, his story is really quite interesting and provocative. Go ahead and read it.

1 out of 5 stars The picture of Dorian Fry.......2003-09-02

...Everything about this "autobiography" is constructed, fake and banal. This book is basically an endless enumeration of boyhood traumas, mostly related to Fry's homosexuality. We read uninspired, mandatory descriptions on how lucky he is with his parents and how he caused them so much pain. But most pages are devoted to anecdotes illustrating what a witty and tormented genius he actually is.

The most irritating characteristic of this book is Fry's inability to hold a plotline. From page one, we get flahbacks, flasforwards and rococo embellishments. When he falls in love, Fry spends pages to describe how it's like "the chord Max Steinder brings in when Bogart catches sight of Bergman, the swell and surge of the Liebestod from Tristan, Liszt's sonata in B minor". Etcetera. Etcetera. And of course, for Fry a page is lost if there's no gag. So be prepared to countless platitudes such as "My mother can strip a gooseberry bush quicker than a priest can strip a choirboy". If you think this is funny, don't bother my review. You'll love the book.

2 out of 5 stars Way to General.......2007-02-28

All of the accounts were from people that were interviewed for this book in the 90's some by phone. Every interview was way to general. " I went to this camp for training, then I went to this unit or that unit, we fought the Germans here or there." Over and over, from different people. I'm sorry but this book was not very good. If your looking for real life detailed accounts of people that were in a Tank Destroyer, this is not the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Stories of a time remembered.......2001-08-23

There have been many personal stories and unit histories published reflecting the heroic and courageous actions of men during WWII. These anecdotes attempt to bring us closer to the horror of combat by standing witness to events and people that are Americans, but are difficult to personally identify with. What Mr. Dunnagan has accomplished for me, and others with fathers and grandfathers in the 813th, is to bring a personal and sympathized account of people that we grew to know, love, and lost, an understanding of their role in the most important undertaking in the Twentieth Century. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Dunnagan, we may grow closer and more revered to our fathers, and understand and respect their unwavering and unconditional service to our country. I am sorry to see that Mr. Dunnagan has passed, and would like to offer thanks for his wonderful account.

                          5 out of 5 stars My Father's Company.......2001-08-15

My father belonged to the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion, Company B. Since he would never talk about his war years, I felt a part of his life was closed off to us. By reading this book, I was able to follow his life through the eyes of the soldiers who recounted their tales from boot camp when the unit was formed, on the ship from NY to England, the camaraderie with his "brothers" in the unit, through every battle he ever fought in right up to the time he was captured by the Germans. I am grateful to have found this book and wish I could thank the author personally for writing it, but since he is no longer living, I will let this review suffice. This book filled in a lot of gaps in my father's life that I would never have known.
