WOW.......2001-02-08
Steve Cameron's latest work with George Brett is a must for any fan of the greatest game. For everyone who has thrilled to George's accomplishments and admired his blue-collar, headfirst approach to the game he loves, "From Here to Cooperstown" is a joy indeed. This book captures the entire story of Brett's career where he had a lifetime average of .305, 3154 hits, and 1595 runs batted in. Great photos and layout compliment the authoring by Steve Cameron. It includes a great section that has quotes and comments from players, coaches, and writers, that have watched George Brett move from a shaky Single A player to the Hall of Famer that he is. Another feature in this book is that George Brett shares his thoughts, emotions, memories, his recollections, and his feelings about the long journey. It captures the entire story of Brett's career from childhood through his many years with the Kansas City Royals. It also does an outstanding job of building an understanding of why Brett is so passionate about the game of baseball. Here is a quote from George on how he would like to be remembered. "I'd like to be remembered as the guy who always played hard and ran out every ball." Although George has made it to the Hall of Fame he thanks many for his success. George would later add in his Hall of Fame speech a thought about his parents. George said," To my parents, Jack and Ethel. Thanks for the endless hours of support and love. You taught me the qualities of life that I will pass along to your grandchildren, Jackson, Dylan, and Robin. I would recommend this book to all players in high school, College, and the Minors because of the lessons it teaches about respect for the game and a personal commitment to excellence.

Until reading this book, I was sure that no one could love the game of baseball more than I did. George Brett is the one man that does.

The Bloomsbury Movie Guides feature scores of entries on all aspects of the making and meaning of movies. Each guide includes historic, cinematic, and literary references; profiles of actors and directors; and interviews.
Jaws, the epitome of suspenseful 1970s action-drama, was directed by Steven Spielberg. (Indeed, this is the film that put Spielberg on the map in Hollywood.) In these pages, Nigel Andrews provides a readable and meticulous critical analysis of a movie that has fascinated him for more than twenty years. He provides the reader with insightful behind-the-scenes stories about daily workings on the set, while also examining the importance of every actor/character and evaluating his or her contribution to the movie.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for "Jaws" film fanatics.......2002-02-09
Terrific read especially if you need to know the nitty gritty during the filming. "Jaws" is a classic film but making it was sheer hell. All the details of the filming are contained in this book. If you have been lucky enough to visit Marthas Vineyard you can match the locations mentioned in the book. (The good news is that very little has changed - you will get that "Jaws" feeling when sitting on State beach or standing at the dock). There some good photos and break down of characters etc.
All in all a must for all movie fans.
Book on Jaws.......2002-01-22
The Bloomsbury Pocket Movie Guide series is an excellent series that dissects famous movies from beginning to end. Jaws is a brilliant movie that launched the career of Steven Spielberg and it is nice to see it get this type of treatment. The book contains many interesting anecdotes and behind the scenes stories. The book suffers from author Nigel Andrews numerous misquotes and mistakes that are blatantly obvious and inexcusable. But, if you can get around those errors and you are a big fan of the film, then this book will ultimately prove to be entertaining.
Rip off? Yes!.......2000-09-02
A pedestrian rehash of existing materials, and no mention of THE JAWS LOG (soon to be reissued by Newmarket Press!), which is the source of much of Mr. Andrews' lightweight book. It's full of dialogue errors, misreadings of the film, and lots of chatty disinformation.
In all, a disappointing package. Some nice art, an excellent cover, and slickly published, but on the whole, not worth the money.
Don't bite.......2000-08-27
This is one of the most disappointing movie books I have ever read. The author rehashes the same old stories without adding anything new of any real value. If you've read the books that came out in the mid-70's on the making of Jaws, then you definitely don't need this book. The number of errors is astounding for a professionally published book; most of the lines from the movie that he quotes he gets wrong (and it's a "land shark," not a "ground shark" in Saturday Night Live's famous parody). At one point, he sets up an analogy that even a ten-year-old could see doesn't work: behavioural scientists are like Chinese food because "soon after inventing one, you want to invent another." Neither scientists nor chinese food invent one another. I read the whole thing because I was stuck in an airport, but I'm throwing it away now. If you really must read it, use the library.
This book is an embarrassment.......2000-08-12
I eagerly bought this book the moment I saw it. The cover--front & back--is marvelous, and though it's outrageously (I'd even say snobbishly) priced, Jaws is my favorite film and I believe there isn't enough solid criticism on 70's cinema. So, I scooped it up.
Pretty quickly I was ashamed. Mr. Andrews style renders trite his frequently astute observations, and he frequently lacked follow-through. For example, his section entitled "Ben Gardner's Head: the Untold Story" (pg. 99) hardly provides exactly that; instead, he merely poses the same questions my associates and I have been asking for 25 years, ending with another one of his 'jokes'--"Ben Gardner: The Movie". For this I paid 14.35?
Worst of all, the fact that renders this book 'defective': 10 mis-quotes in 9 pages! (These happen from pages 71 to 79.) Did he write this book out of memory? Perhaps two of Jaws's most famous lines--"You're gonna need a bigger boat." and "For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing"--are incorrect as well as some sloppy oversights. An intern and a VCR for a half hour's work could have saved Mr. Andrew's and the whole Bloomsbury Film Guide series from being a disreputible waste of time.
Just because this is a 'Film Guide' doesn't free them from the fundamentals of journalism, in this case accuracy.
If you've already fallen prey the way I did, I suggest you mail the damn book back. I did, with these complaints, only to be refused. If more people try, perhaps the second printing will relfect the negative attention and have corrections. I just want a comapny to assume responsibility for their product even if it is just popular culture sociology.

Homosexuality in Another Time and Place.......2005-12-04
Most of the stories in this collection go the same way: a samurai sees another samurai and falls hopelessly in love with him. But does he invite him out for a cup of sake? Does he even speak to the object of his affections? Apparently such an approach would be too direct for a samurai. Instead he stops eating, stops sleeping, and generally pines away for his beloved. When he is at death's door, this is the cue for his friends to go to the adored and tell him, "There's a man who is literally dying of love for you." Though the adored has never before even heard of the other man, he invariably rushes to his bedside and swears eternal devotion, whereupon his admirer recovers his health and they live happily ever after.
Also included is the priceless sentence, "After midnight a slave came and told the Lord that an immense badger had been found with its head cut off in the tea-house in the garden."
In spite of my humor here, it's actually a very beautifully written book, and it's also a compelling glimpse into another culture.

Book Description
WorldCom. Enron. Tyco. Shocking accusations of dishonesty and silent complicity have dominated headlines recently, and cost the American economy trillions of dollars. Clearly, dishonesty doesn't pay.
Drawing from these stories, as well as from more positive ones, Absolute Honesty shows how to establish and maintain a culture where honest communication is the norm, and employees can speak openly without fear of retribution. The book illustrates the impact that truthfulness and accountability can have on organizations, attacking the sort of passivity that allows little lies to grow into giant disasters.
Structured around the Six Laws of Absolute Honesty, this insightful book goes beyond simply extolling the virtues of ethics to provide a template managers can use to maintain an environment of healthy debate. It also contains a toolbox of techniques anyone can apply to improve his or her ability to confront and resolve difficult issues.
Companies can reap huge benefits from cultivating an atmosphere of trust. Absolute Honesty is an important, timely book that provides readers with the tools and strategies to establish a culture in which communication thrives and results speak for themselves.
Customer Reviews:
This is a topic that we should all get our teeth into.......2006-10-21
This book is outstanding. Bob has extensive experience in Intel, Tektronix and other technology companies as a senior HR executive and has captured the power of honest communication. There are so many things that get in the way of honest commination and working towards this end can be discouraging if your culture does not support it. However, using the principles that Bob outlines will provide a powerful bottom line impact and should not be ignored. Very powerful book. Now if only every one followed it.
Absolute Advice.......2006-05-24
This book sets out and reasserts the moral compass that all companies - and individuals - need to be successful, not only in business but as humans and partners. It's beautifully written, compelling and should be required reading for all executives and managers of companies. It may seem basic but the more sophisticated we are - or think ourselves to be - the more likely we are to neglect these lessons. A book to remind us of our essential fallibility - and our essential goodness, if only we care to care.
The best current work on honesty and leadership.......2006-03-08
This is the best current work on honesty and leadership. It is well-written and enjoyable to read. Johnson is a consultant and speaker. Phillips was in human resources for 30 years with several known companies. Their ideas come from their work and consulting observations. Their six laws are good points we all could inculcate in our lives and leadership.
A Plan That Could Work.......2005-03-22
Given today's moral relativism this is a tall order, but it is also exactly what is needed. It's time we return to the days when a handshake sealed a business deal. OK, I admit we can't get there, but this book outlines a reasonable alternative.
Johnson and Phillips create a plan of action based on establishing values and obtaining honest feedback from employees. They do this by first challenging the reader in the first two chapters, and then outlining the "Six Laws of Absolute Honesty." They spend the rest of the book explaining to the reader how an environment of absolute honesty can be achieved.
Such a program will face many transitional difficulties, and from what I can see Johnson and Phillips cover them all. They provide thorough explanations and step by step instructions to overcome the most difficult problems (e.g. the six steps of constructive confrontation, The Manager's Code of Conduct, or the Five Tenets of Ethical Behavior).
As expected, the authors do not shy away from controversy. For example, they do not advocate the conventional wisdom of pushing a win/win approach to problem solving. They recognize that on occasion right must prevail and doing what is right may not result in a win/win. Finally!
For the busy reader, this is an easy book to read with lots of titled breaks, a good index, and a few fun terms like "lipotage" - giving lip service to an agreement then later sabotaging it.
Insightful!.......2004-03-02
This handy guide endeavors to reduce the complex challenge of ethical leadership - with which great minds have struggled for thousands of years - to six simple and absolute rules of honesty. The authors, Larry Johnson and Bob Phillips, clearly explain each rule of absolute honesty they have derived and provide many illustrative anecdotes and examples drawn from daily life. There is a fascinating, moving story of one co-author's unforgettable experience as a high school track star, and another account about a couple whose marriage ended in divorce after the wife insisted on acting dishonestly. Perhaps the authors believed that this volume would move even the greatest crooks to resolute and unswerving honesty. Alas, that is beyond their scope. However We find that ordinary businesspeople seeking general guidelines might find useful counsel here. Hey, at least it's a start.

Not worth the paper it's written on.......2007-07-14
i'm really getting tired of all the books being published about Selena's death. Even more than 10 years on, people are still cashing in on it and writing about it and it seems to me to be the same story rehashed time and time again.
Don't get me wrong, i love Selena, i think she was an amazing artist, but this book does not do justice to her memory. The author claims that she knows a 'secret' about Selena, that Selena kept a diary and only the author knows what it contains.
She spends the whole book making reference to this while not actually telling us what that 'secret' is. Now, it's been a long time since i've read this 'book' (and i have no desire to again), but i remember the author seemed to sympathise with Yolanda. What the hell is that about? If it wasn't for Yolanda's crazy, selfish act Selena would still be alive, instead of being written about in a cringingly bad account of her life in which the author seems more sympathetic towards the murderer than the victim.
I'm embaressed to say I read this...........2007-07-05
This book is awful...what is this woman even talking about she's like a rambling idiot...oh and there's no secret.
Complete bull.......2006-08-19
When I read this book I thought it was really misleading. It was a plot to make everyone feel sorry for Yolanda. The truth is there is no secret. Yolanda is a lier. No one should feel sorry for her . If she wasn't so busy busselying money from everybodys business she would have know that she would get confronted and eventually fired. She had before inbussled money and it was settled quietly. Ms. Arrass did this book completly wrong and I must say I am disappointed to know that she beleives everything Yolanda says. Selena didn't have an affair with anyone. She wasn't going to hurt herself in anyway because she cares about her family, friends, and fans. She was in love with her husband so why in the world would she cheat on him. She never had a plastic surgeon so that was an evident lie anyway. Yolanda had absoulte no excuse for shooting selena. Yolanda got upset because she knew she had no escape from the truth. There was no way she could get out of being in front of Selena and she tried everything to get out of the situation at that moment and the only way she could do that was to kill or injure selena at that moment. SO THE SECRET IS THERE IS NO SECRET.
Self-Serving Journalism at it's Peak.......2006-02-27
I avoided buying this book years ago simply because I'd already read another review that said the "secret" was not disclosed. Now, I felt prepared to handle that and what I read was a "look at how great my show and I are!" book. She's apparently more able to be manipulated than she'd like to admit, because for some reason she believes an awful lot of what Saldivar told her; things that common sense don't dictate to be true. She states in her book that her show "Primer Impacto" has been criticized for "smacking of sensationalism" and now I know why - and I've never seen the show! "Between the lines" she insinuates that Selena was having an affair with her plastic surgeon and was about to move to Mexico and that that's why Yolanda shot her - to prevent her from causing harm to herself. PUHLEEZ!!!! I couldn't rate this book with negative stars, but if I could've that's what this book would've gotten from me.
Selena Story.......2005-08-02
It was good to know things about Selena Tragic Death Story I wasn't aware.

Book Description
"A significant contribution to our understanding of minor parties and party system change. The authors develop a new theory and provide strong empirical evidence in support of it. They show that the Perot's candidacy has had a strong and lasting impact on partisan competition in elections.
---Paul Herrnson, Director, Center for American Politics and Citizenship Professor, Department of Government and Politics, University of Maryland
"Powerfully persuasive in its exhaustive research, Three's a Crowd may surprise many by revealing the long- ignored but pivotal impact of Perot voters on every national election since 1992."
---Clay Mulford, Jones Day and General Counsel to the 1992 Perot Presidential Campaign and to the Reform Party.
"Rapaport and Stone have written an engaging and important book. They bring fresh perspectives, interesting data, and much good sense to this project. Three's a Crowd is fundamentally about political change, which will, in turn, change how scholars and pundits think of Ross Perot in particular, and third parties in general."
---John G. Geer, Professor of Political Science at Vanderbilt University and Editor of The Journal of Politics
"The definitive analysis of the Perot movement, its role in the 1994 GOP victory, and the emergence of an enduring governing majority."
---L. Sandy Maisel, Director, Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs, Colby College
Three's a Crowd begins with the simple insight that third parties are creatures of the American two-party system, and derive their support from the failures of the Democratic and Republican parties.
While third parties flash briefly in the gaps left by those failures, they nevertheless follow a familiar pattern: a sensation in one election, a disappointment in the next. Rapoport and Stone conclude that this steep arc results from one or both major parties successfully absorbing the third party's constituency. In the first election, the third party raises new issues and defines new constituencies; in the second, the major parties move in on the new territory. But in appropriating the third party's constituents, the major parties open themselves up to change. This is what the authors call the "dynamic of third parties."
The Perot campaign exemplified this effect in 1992 and 1996. Political observers of contemporary electoral politics missed the significance of Perot's independent campaign for the presidency in 1992. Rapoport and Stone, who had unfettered-and unparalleled-access to the Perot political machine, show how his run perfectly embodies the third-party dynamic. Yet until now no one has considered the aftermath of the Perot movement through that lens.
For anyone who seeks to understand the workings of our stubbornly two-party structure, this eagerly awaited and definitive analysis will shed new light on the role of third parties in the American political system.
Customer Reviews:
Three's a Crowd--Well worth the read.......2006-04-04
This is not only one of the most interesting books on the American political system that I've read over the years, but also one of the most accessible. Three's A Crowd is an exceptionally well-written and intellectual book that will appeal to academics, students, and the curious reader alike. Rapoport and Stone do an excellent job of developing their theory and supporting it with years of careful research. To anyone who has ever wondered why the American two-party system is the way that it is (and under what conditions that might be changed), I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
This groundbreaking study addresses the representation of food and drink in the works of Percy and Mary Shelley. With original studies of much-debated texts, it provides new perspectives in recent cultural history and theory concerning medicine and diet in the 1790SH1820 period. Morton shows how food in the social and literary text provided complex and ambivalent ways of signaling ideological preferences. It will appeal to all those interested in the body, ecology and social and anthropological approaches to Romantic literature.
