Book Description
In 1887 a twenty-one-year-old newspaperman named George Nellis (1865–1948) rode a bicycle from Herkimer, New York, to San Francisco in seventy-two days, surpassing the transcontinental bicycle record by several weeks. He averaged fifty miles a day pedalling a fifty-two-inch, high-wheeled Columbia Expert "ordinary" bicycle with a tubular steel frame and hard rubber tires, and he lost twenty-three pounds in the process.
He bicycled ever westward through sleepy villages, farmlands, and growing cities of the rapidly changing nation and trekked across uninhabited stretches of prairies and mountains that marked its shrinking frontier. Following his daily ten-hour rides, Nellis sat down and wrote letters about his adventures to his hometown newspapers and a national cycling magazine to finance his cross-country journey.
Nellis's epic journey over dirt paths, muddy roads, and occasional railroad ties was plagued by terrible weather, frightening experiences, and odd encounters; yet it was also enriched by breathtaking natural wonders and the generous spirit of many people he met. He nearly drowned in a flash flood, was chased by a furious bull, killed a coyote that accosted him one night, fell victim to mirages in Utah's Great Salt Desert, narrowly missed a tremendous fire that wiped out half of a California town only hours after he had left, and witnessed a horrifying accident on a train track. Nellis also managed to meet the legendary baseball player A. G. Spalding in Chicago, take in professional baseball games in Detroit and Chicago, participate in several bicycle races in Omaha, attend an opera in Cheyenne, Wyoming, enjoy a circus, and eat over two dozen bananas in one sitting in Osceola, Indiana.
Drawing on Nellis's letters and media coverage of the trip, Kevin J. Hayes recreates in compelling detail this amazing trip and the many ordinary and extraordinary faces of late-nineteenth-century America that were once revealed to a young bicyclist.

Crashing Gets My Two Thumbs Up!.......2003-10-14
Every now and then it's nice to read a book that you can relate to. Crashing Hollywood is a fast paced, manic account of one woman's ride up the silver ladder into Tinseltown. A screenwriter, producer, new filmmaker and about 10 other things, Fran Harris lets us see what it's like to be a wannabe in LaLa land. But she's not like your regular wannabe. Already a player in television as an ESPN, Fox and Lifetime TV sportscaster, she has somewhat of an edge on most of us. But she admits that taking on the crazy corridors of Hollyood as a new producer, writer and filmmaker has not been a picnic. While other books have been written by studio execs or current powers that be, I found this unique take on breaking into the biz to be just what the doctor ordered. The author has an ease with language that made the book easy to read and digest. You actually get the feeling that she truly cares about the folks reading her book. It's part autobiographical, part self-help. Hmmmm...therapy in a book about Hollywood. Now there's a concept.
Excellent! Highly recommend to all with Hwood on the brain.......2003-10-13
I loved this book! I have watched this author as a sports announcer on ESPN for many years and I recently got to meet her at a book signing and found her to be one of the most engaging people I've ever met. With folks waiting for her to sign their book or just talk to her, she smiled and talked to every single person who was there. So, I was already impressed before I actually read the book. But Crashing did not disappoint. It's full of a lot of stuff that should be common sense to most folks (sending thank you notes, for instance) but after reading Crashing I found myself looking at things in a different light. Ms. Harris shares her system for keeping in touch with Hollywood execs without pestering them. She shows us how not to become Clients From Hell. And she even talks about some of her not so shining moments. All this, she shares in a humorous fashion that keeps you turning the pages. As an aspiring A-list writer, it was especially important for me to get the scoop on agents and how some things in Tinseltown work. Ms. Harris has managed to give us a healthy dose of reality while at the same time entertaining and encouraging those who haven't had their first Hollywood meeting. Inspiring, witty and full of energy, this author has done us all a huge favor. I'm on my second reading and I've even bought the book for all of my friends who want to be in the biz!
Fun read! Great book.......2003-10-13
First of all, I will allow myelf to waste one line of this review to speak to the reviewer who didn't even have the balls to leave an email address after s/he delivered such an unfair review of this book. Two things are clear: the person who wrote that review did NOT read the book. Second, clearly they knew that those of us who found it enjoyable and insightful might have a few choice words for him/her for being outright malicious--but then again that reader is from L.A. (guess that's to be expected).
In Crashing, Fran Harris represents herself in an honest light. She never makes claims to have sold a film, won an Emmy or climbed Mount Everest. That's the whole point of the book. Instead she's generously taken us inside her journey into Hollywood, which is what her book is about (anyone who's read it, will know this). She shares her ups, her downs and in betweens in a world that very few of us ever get a peek into. She takes us inside Hollywood meetings, on studio lots and never once mentions a party (as the unnamed reviewer has eluded to).
What I love about this book is that you feel that you know this author. You can feel that she's real, she understands what it's like to be out here day in and day out, trying to get closer to that Hollywood dream (even if it is a myth).
Crashing Hollywood is funny and refreshingly frank. More importantly, it's written by someone who clearly knows who she is and what she wants. Her energy is inspiring and her words encouraged me not to give up. In the book she says that one day she'll have her own syndicated talk show...don't be surprised if that one day is real soon.
Fran Harris has spoken to wannabes in wannabes language and I'm grateful. We need more books like this, that tell it like it is. Go, Fran!
For Out of Towners.......2003-10-12
This was a fun book. It was light, entertaining, fast paced and humorous. I am partial to the author also because she played for the Houston Comets (which is my hometown team,) went to my alma mater, the University of Texas, and she still lives in Texas.
This book seems to be intended for those who don't live in Hollywood. It has some entertainment industry tips on keeping everything professional. The premise seems to be to treat your career in the entertainment industry as professional as possible. It contains interviews with various people working in the industry.
The book would be stronger if she concentrated her advice to one trade- screenwriting, acting, producing, singing or whatever. Although Fran seems to be quite a dynamo, and her motivational and communication skills are obvious, her book doesn't fully explore or enlighten one to the inside of the industry. She does a good job keeping me reading by utilizing the aforementioned communication skills.
Another book from a marketer with with zero credits........2003-10-08
After seeing Fran Harris in an interview, the first thing I did was check Amazon's compreshensive Internet Movie Database (IMDB) for credits. There is one listing for a Fran Harris from the 1950's, which is clearly not her. Therefore, Fran Harris has been not connected to any television show or film that has gone anywhere. Not produced, not directed, not acted, not written. I checked out her website, and there was a book about how to make money writing books, and lots of self-promotion items, but nothing that lead me to believe that she offered anything of any substance at all. Lots of references to marketing and PR.
There are any number of people who want to make a quick buck off people who hope to make it in Hollywood. These are generally folk who have not actually accomplished anything themselves in town, other than just networking and showing up to parties. These are not people to learn from. I'm interested in professionals that are successful in their fields, that can share their insights and experiences with those of us who are starting out. Advice from someone irrelevant in the entertainment business is worth less than zero.
The book was standard marketing stuff, with a Hollywood twist. Check out any of the myriad other books by people who have acutally done something of value in this town.
You have to admire her marketing prowess, though. I'm sure she'll have infomercials soon.

Customer Reviews:
A good expansion to a fun set, you munckins know you want it, so just buy it already!!.......2006-11-03
I bought Super Munckin as my first set of Munchkin ever. I had played Munchkin, Munchkin Bites!, and Munchkin Fu. Having played the crap out of Super Munchkin, I was stoked to get the expansion. Narrow S-Cape definitely adds to the Super Hero theme of this set, I loved the Capes, brilliant idea!! However, I feel that playing this set with Super Munchkin leaves the player feeling like they are getting beat on an awful lot without facing a fair challenge. However, I also own Star Munchkin and Clown Wars, which is a very player-heavy set, where you end up fighting monsters who are 17 to your 93, not on epic rules, either. I like the challenge of this set with Super Munchkin, but to really make it great, you need Blender and Star Munchkin with it, it evens the playing field for the players without the need to constantly run away. Oh no! A level 16 Wimpy Thugs?! I run away!!! Great game, can't wait for Impossible!!
Product Description
Fly through the city. Smash the villains. Backstab your teammates and grab their gadgets. Munchkin has parodied the classic dungeon, the kung-fu warrior, the space epic, and the creatures of the night. Now, it's the superheroes' turn! Be a Mutant, an Exotic, a Mystic, or a Techno. The higher your Level, the more Powers you can have. Battle dastardly masterminds, devastating monsters, and invading aliens from the next dimension - from the wimpy Bucketman all the way up to Big Ol' Planet Eater Guy himself - and TAKE THEIR STUFF! With the Electro-Mento-Hat, the Telezapinator, and the (jet-powered) Pogo Stick, no foe can stand before you. Super Munchkin is a stand-alone game, which (of course) can be combined with other Munchkin games. Designed by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic, this one is destined to RULE THE WORLD! Mwahahaha!
Customer Reviews:
More zany Fun .......2006-01-07
The Munchkin crowd is at it again with a series of silly superheroes, crazy villians and odd powers to wind your head around.
The system is much like Munchkin Bites with the powers based on levels but other than that it is the same basic premise that makes the other munchkin games fun.
It is not my favorite of the batch (Munchkin-Fu wins that honor) but it is well worth your time and money.

Harsh Reality.......2007-08-29
Glenn Shepard is the Professor of Harsh Reality. He's provocative and tells it like it is in a humorous but chillingly serious fashion that cuts to the core of the issue in a way that no other management guru does. His style is not for everyone, especially those who think more positive thinking and a pat on the back are the solution to everything. But if you've been in the trenches of management and have experienced how miserable problem employees can make your life, this book will be your salvation.
Tough (and practical) Answers.......2007-08-27
This book is definitely not for the thin skinned. But if you're sick and tired of trying to get a good day's work out of people with an entitlement mentality who think the world owes them something, Glen Shepherd has unapologetically provided the answers you're looking for.
What a waste!.......2007-04-09
Without a doubt the least useful management book I have ever read. I suffered through the platitudes, the moralizing, the sermonizing, the self-serving egotism and the "I'm the boss, take or leave it" response to every personnel challenge in hopes of finding at least one useful tip to justify the money I spent on the book. But, alas, there was none. Serious managers - don't waste your time or money.
Donation Pile.......2006-07-14
If you are male, white, Republican, politically conservative, born before 1965, and have Andrew Jackson as your all time personal hero then by all means purchase this title. I loved my copy so much I'm donating it to The Salvation Army.
The basic treatise on strict management.......2006-05-01
We recommend this book to everyone who has employees: managers, supervisors or small business owners - especially if you are new to your position, are a first time manager or supervisor, have just hired your first employee or are about to do so. If the employees are running the ship at your company, it's time to take back control. Author Glenn Shepard tells you exactly how to do so in easy-to-implement logical steps. With this guide, even the most wishy-washy manager can become a model of strength, leadership and authority.

Mothers often cling to single moments, small gestures, and specific memories in order to grasp all that happens in the first blurry year of a baby's life. In The Blue Jay's Dance, writer Louise Erdrich has assembled a photo album of snapshots such as these: the days and images that collectively define the passion, ambivalence, yearnings, and satisfactions of carrying, birthing, and nurturing a baby. "Any sublime effort has its dark moments," says Erdrich, referring to a rather bleak snapshot of mother isolation. "Perhaps, if anything, the meaning in this book for others may be this: Here is a job in which it is not unusual to be, at the same instant, wildly joyous and profoundly stressed." The Blue Jay's Dance is a fresh and masterful book that avoids all the sticky clichés while still managing to articulate the depths of mother-baby love.
Book Description
In The Blue Jay's Dance, Louise Erdrich's first major work of nonfiction, she brilliantly and poignantly examines the joys and frustrations, the compromises and the insights, the difficult struggles and profound emotional satisfactions she experienced in the course of one twelve month period--from a winter pregnancy through a spring and summer of new motherhood to fall a return to writing. In exquisitely lyrical prose, Erdrich illuminates afresh the large and small events that mothers--parents--everywhere will recognize and appreciate.

The dance of birth.......2007-01-16
I have loved each if Louise Erdrich's books that I have read. Her warmth and heart come through perfectly in this journal of birth. She has been blessed by the same goddess who has nurtured every woman during her birthing times from time immemorial. Highly recommended to all women who love life. And all men who love them.
Excellent.......2005-02-10
A beauftifully written book about birth, motherhood, and nature. I read this book when I was 9 months pregnant, in preperation of my own upcomng birth year and I was not diasappointed. It is lyrical, profound, and prolific. You will especially enjoy this book if you are at all in awe of nature. The way she weaves it into the life cycle and observes and commments on the surroundings of her rural New Hampshire home painted a beautiful backdrop for her experiences of birthing and rearing an infant through the four seasons. I highly recommend this book to anyone, regardless of family circumstances. It can be enjoyed by all as simply an incredibly well written, woman focused book.
great, honest book.......2002-04-08
Fine book, can be read again and again. Would be a great book to give an expecting mother or new mother.
insightful, spiritual (non-denominational) and helpful.......2000-08-20
It seems that a week doesn't go by when I see a woman on the subway or in a coffee shop reading a book from the What to Expect When You're Expecting series. Those detailed tombs of writing seem to be sent to people planning or in the process of rearing children as if by storks. (I've even heard of some workplaces keeping the book What to Expect... in the human resources supply closet, to be given as a gift when a woman announces she's pregnant.) However, upon reading some chapters from those books and informal discussions with mothers, a theme that reoccurs is that some women will explicitly instruct others not to read those books. Why? Not because they don't contain a plethora of knowledge but precisely because they do. That is, these can wind up really scaring a parent-to-be because they contain all the zillions of possible physical and emotional things that can go wrong during pregnancy and the first years. I think everyone can agree that raising the anxiety level, especially of a woman during pregnancy, is quite a less than desirable outcome.
What if there was a book that spoke honestly about the experiences of pregnancy and childbirth and, more importantly, treated these experiences as natural events rather than listing all the possible things to be feared? Better yet, what if there was a book that did all those things and spoke of the spiritual aspects of pregnancy and children, in a gentle and non-denominational way? Well, a book with all those features and more is available in this book.
Erdrich is of Native American ancestry and a writer by profession. Her background is rich with symbolism and spiritualism and is wonderful at weaving her story into the passage of seasons. At times I felt I was really looking through her eyes in the room where she wrote, looking out at a large picture window in her remote rural home. She saw the lives of various wildlife, from all types of birds to deer to wild dogs, intertwine with the passage of time from the beginnings of her pregnancy through the first year of her daughter's life. This book seems to be very realistic primarily because it does not compartmentalize pregnancy or infancy; Erdrich does not shy away from concurrent events in her life including changes in relationship with her husband, observations of nature, memories from her own childhood and recipes she craves during pregnancy or for their nurturing powers.
In more popular baby manual-type books, the subjects of actual labor, sleep deprivation, nurturing "instincts," and patience are sometimes glossed-over or described in such a way to possibly make a parent feel guilty for not automatically possessing certain qualities. This is yet another way that Erdrich's book masterfully succeeds as she lovingly and with understanding tackles these and other important subjects. She describes with humor and passion of a "no-sleep week" by stating how she wanted to call 911 Emergency because her baby wouldn't sleep. She describes the situation: "It happens to be a long crying bout, nothing wrong physically, just growth, maybe teeth. Why knows? Sometimes babies just cry and cry... in my office, with her in the crib next to the desk, I break through a level of sleep-deprived frustration so intense I think I'll burst, into a dimension of surprising calm," (71).
Erdrich speaks of the "tender and grueling task of rearing a newborn," (6) with such a fullness and richness of spirit that I cannot help but be moved by her descriptions. I highly recommend this book not only to anyone personally considering parenting but also to educators and anyone interested in the mutual development of a parent and an infant. I think it could also serve as an excellent supplement for all students in any Infancy and Child Development course. The best summary for her book is by Erdrich herself. In the introduction she states: "These pages are a personal search and an extended wondering at life's complexity. This is a book of conflict, a book of babyhood, a book about luck, cats, a writing life, wild places in the world, and my husband's cooking. It is a book about he vitality between mothers and infants, that passionate bond into which we pour the direct expression of our being," (5).
This is an amazing book!.......2000-05-24
I loved this book when I first read it before my daughter was born. Re-reading it now, as a new mother, I find it even more remarkable. Louise Erdrich has perfectly captured both the frustration and surpassing joy of life with a new baby. The book is also a beautiful nature narrative, with observations on the changing of the seasons interwoven with the story of a child's first year. Highly recommended!

Book Description
Poland was in ruins after World War I. The fighting front had rolled through some areas more than seven different times, and the result was the almost complete destruction of the roads, railways, bridges, water systems, and power plants. The government was based mainly on civil servants of Polish descent who remained on the job after the fall of Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. Even after Poland regained her independence in 1918, the borders were not yet defined and the nation was vulnerable to continued threats from Germany and Russia.
This work presents the story of the Kosciuszko Squadron, a small group of American flyers that formed; without the support of the State Department and the American Expeditionary Force in Europe, to defend Poland from the Bolshevik armies and to prevent the communist revolution in Russia from uniting with Germany frustrated by provisions of the Treaty of Versaille.
The book covers the events leading up to the formation of the squadron and the first efforts to enlist American military help for Poland in 1918. It explores why that small group of Americans felt compelled to fight for Poland and what they knew about who and what they were fighting for and against, and discusses the people, events, and issues that figured prominently in the war. The Squadron was named, of course, in honor of Tadeusz Kosciuszko, who famously came from Poland in 1776 to join the Colonial forces fighting the War of Independence from Britain.
Customer Reviews:
Reveals a relatively unknown story.......2003-01-06
Researched and written by Janusz Cisek (Deputy Director of the Department of International Relations and European Integration at the Ministry of Culture in Warsaw, Poland), Kosciuszko, We Are Here! reveals the relatively unknown story of the Kosciuszko Squadron, a small group of American flyers who defended Poland in the years after World War I, serving from 1919-1921. Without the support of the American State Department, these men were expected to protect a Poland which was in ruins as a result of the devastation of World War I, from the growing threat of the Soviet's Bolshevik armies, and prevent the communist revolution in Russia from spreading to Germany. Kosciuszko, We Are Here! is an informed, succinctly written, and superbly presented "window in time" glimpse into a hitherto obscure aspect of military and aviation history.
