Book Description

No monarch is more glamorous or more controversial than Elizabeth I. The stories by which successive generations have sought to extol, explain, or excoriate Elizabeth supply a rich index to the cultural history of English nationalism - whether they represent her as Anne Boleyn's suffering orphan or as the implacable nemesis of Mary, Queen of Scots, as learned stateswoman or as frustrated lover, persecuted princess or triumphant warrior queen. This book examines the many afterlives the Virgin Queen has lived in drama, poetry, fiction, painting, propaganda, and the cinema over the four centuries since her death, from the aspiringly epic to the frankly kitsch. Exploring the Elizabeths of Shakespeare and Spenser, of Sophia Lee and Sir Walter Scott, of Bette Davis and of Glenda Jackson, of Shakespeare in Love and Blackadder II, this is a lively, lavishly-illustrated investigation of England's perennial fascination with a queen who is still engaged in a posthumous progress through the collective pysche of her country.

5 out of 5 stars Not just Elizabeth but why she matters.......2005-01-16

Anne Barton, an emerita Cambridge, England professor of literature and history, called this book 'scholarly, wide-ranging, lively and witty', and she doesn't give out praise lightly: she also described it as 'a fascinating cultural history of England itself in terms of its obsession with Anne Boleyn's resilient daughter.' This was in the London Review of Books, which rarely gets that sort of thing wrong, so I bought it. And she was dead right. This is a stunning book -- broadens your whole sense of history. And such a joy and a stimulant to read. I can't think how they'll ever follow it, but thank goodness they wrote it.

5 out of 5 stars Gloriana in all her posthumous glory!.......2003-03-05

This is a dazzling piece of cultural history about all the things people have wanted to be true about Elizabeth I whether they are or not, with fantastic pictures drawn from the plays and novels and movies in which her endlessly glamorous afterlife has been lived. It's a great book about why this enigmatic, dangerous woman matters and has mattered: it's funny, it's heartfelt, and it's scholarly too. Perfect for the thinking Glenda Jackson/Bette Davis/Cate Blanchett fan in your life, and a penetrating, witty meditation on fame, womanhood, and history.

    Book Description

The full story of one of the greatest and most colorful coaches in the history of college basketball, told here for the first time. From the playgrounds of Rockaway, to the NCAA championship, to the broadcast booth, there has been only one Al McGuire. This is his story, as quick-paced and fascinating as the coach himself.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject slowly delivered.......2000-04-12

I love basketball and always thought Al was a great guy. While I looked forward to this book and am glad I read it, I cannot recommend it. Al is an interesting funny guy but that doesn't come out in the book. The book reads clinically without the emotion of Al McGuire felt through the writer. I did enjoy hearing of his early life but it was too long. Same for Belmont Abbey. Along the way you do learn interesting facts like he had a losing record when hired at Marquette. But, generally, as much as I liked the subject, the book did not live up.

    PERSONAL MCGUIRE STORY.

I was at the Memphis State game described on Page 229 where with 45 seconds left and up by 5, an MSU player stepped in the foul lane losing the Tigers a one and one and probably the game. Yes, Al left the court with both hands raised. Raised in what he later called the "Irish salute", middle finger extended. Al had incited the crowd, touched us with his enthusiasm. When he came later to call some Keith Lee games, he fondly remembered the game and how he left the field. This is the "Al" the country knew and loved.

    2 out of 5 stars Missing.......2000-01-29

Mr. Moran does an excellent job of recapping the Al McGuire era at Marquette University. He also tracks the career of Coach Al especially well. The book was a labor of love, but the author should have more closely looked at the "whole" Al McGuire. That's why the book is, at best, average.

What's missing is a sense of color brought on by perspective; the deep-down interpretations that the passage of time permits. As a long-time follower of Marquette basketball -- and a Marquette J-school grad to boot -- I believe too much of the book was newsy. Mr. Moran recanted stories that were well-known and well-publicized. Case in point: the oft-repeated Delsman fight.

What would have been interesting was to probe deeply the fundamental emotions that brought together some of the best college basketball talent and Al McGuire. What emotions were running through Jim Chones' psyche as he rejected UCLA and others for McGuire and MU? Or, why in succession, did Larry McNeill, Maurice Lucas and Bo Ellis all choose Marquette. What did their heart say? What was so special about this man that his players would attend college at Concrete University (despite McGuire's pleadings that Marquette had "green grass")with virtually no other African-American students.

The ballplayers had a profound impact on Marquette's outlook toward relationships among African-American and caucasian students. Mr. Moran documents this seldom discussed element of life at MU well. He effectively illustrates the Jesuit-Catholic response to one of the most basic precepts of the Christian church.

On the basketball side, Al lost as much talent to the NBA as he recruited in the early 1970s. Certainly the arguable loss of at least one and possibly two or more national championships weighed heavily on his psyche. We know from the author that Al wanted his players to make money -- but could have they made more by staying in school? The author glosses over these emotional and practical issues. It would have been nice to know what happened when the NBA called for Jim Chones. The look on McGuire's face, the visceral emotion that was overcome by logic and compassion.

As baketball's flower child, McGuire's views about casual drug use would have been interesting. Especially given that marijuana use on campus was common at the time and one star player was arrested for marijuana possession in the championship year.

Finally, there was very little discussion of what has since happened to Al's players. The author glosses over this point. The success of any college professor -- including a coach -- is the measurement of his impact on the post college career of his players. That's not just the NBA. It's what they did with their education and their lives.

What would have made this book special was to make it an oral history. Let then author narrate and then, rather than quote witnesses and Al, let people tell their Al stories in their own words.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recap of the life and career of a true character.......1999-11-21

The book is must reading for those of us who only remotely knew of the specifics of the Coach. It provides wonderful insight into a great leader, who never gave up his individuality, and certainly has made a permanent place for himself in college basketball. The author did an excellent job of research and provides a throughly researched journey into Al's life. Congratulations, Declan. I look forward to your next venture. It is good to see success coming from St. Pascal's

i was there. i'm the guy in the broom closet, and just to add to the penurious legend i went to his medalist office to offer to pay for the ticket and he grabbed the money so fast i got blisters. i know everyone mentioned in the milwaukee half of the book and the author hits it pretty much on the head. very few glitches. a wonderful stroll down memory lane. must reading for all "warrior" fans and al watchers. thanks moran and thanks al. lefty

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and entertaining tales from Coach Al's life........1999-06-04

This well written book about Al McGuire traces his life's ups and downs from New York to Milwaukee. It provides fascinating insights into the unique character of Coach Al, and recounts many of his most legendary moments as a coach, and as a man. I especially enjoyed the behind-the-scenes tales as told by many of Al's closest friends, former players and aquaintances. This book also provides insight into the evolution of modern prime-time college basketball and recalls in wonderful detail the days when Marquette wore "bumblebee" striped uniforms (which were later banned) and the NIT was king. I rate this book Five Stars for any fan of zen or college hoops. Or to use a McGuireism; this book is seashells and balloons! Greg W. Honolulu, Hawaii

5 out of 5 stars Now I Don't Need To Go To The Cannes Film Fest!.......2000-05-29

Since Roger Ebert covered this festival so well in 1987, I feel as if I've already been there without having to experience any of the annoyances of trying to do it in person. He does a bit of everything while there, from covering the obvious stars and star-studded events to seeking out the unknown, eccentric, artistic characters, plus fast buck artists, who also attend. He even admits he has to view the movies again back in the USA because the conditions of seeing them at Cannes tend to be adverse. Ebert, known primarily for his television review show, is even a better writer than he is a speaker. You will treasure and keep this book.

5 out of 5 stars Glamour and Jet Lag: An Insightful look at Cannes.......1998-10-02

It is easy to see why Roger Ebert is such a beloved and praised writer. Reading through his book, the reader is instantly befriended by this smart, witty and poetic author. Roger Ebert provides readers with an in-depth look at the most famed film festival in the world, held in a place that is as charming as the crazy as Ebert's old friend Billy "Silver Dollar" Baxter. After this book, you too will feel as though you have been dragged through the starlit and utterly dazing world of jet lag, royal dinners, mid-night screenings, and the occasional topless starlet. Bon voyage!

    Book Description

Kristin Henderson is married to a Marine Corps chaplain who has served in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Her portraits of military wives with spouses at war are both deeply engaging and hard-won. The author's insider experience allows her to uncover hidden and often difficult aspects of military culture on and off the vast bases that define many regions of America. It has earned her respect from military families as well as unique access to military staff. Henderson's story focuses on two very different women, Marissa Boots and Beth Pratt, as their husbands leave for Iraq and they both experience intense indoctrination into life alone at Fort Bragg, South Carolina. Extraordinarily revealing scenes from the lives of these women and other military families illuminate the truths of living in the shadow of America's military. The overwhelming effects of anticipatory grief; strongly enforced mores concerning infidelity; feelings of alienation from nondeployed military and the rest of the world; the effects of e-mail/cell phone/CNN culture; the too-frequent homecoming violenceall of these, Henderson shows, are powerful psychological realities for military families. Hidden Homefront offers moving and necessary testimony to all of us from the families who support America's way of war, and way of life.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every American should read this book.......2007-07-17

A common comment these days amongst military families is "our country isn't at war...our military is...the country is at the mall." Although our country is still at war, the only ones truly sacrificing are the military and their families. (and for many those sacrfices will continue for a lifetime, no matter when this war ends.) I nodded and sobbed and laughed throughout this book. Kristin is an amazing writer and managed to do incredibly thorough research to follow these families through their experiences. A military spouse herself who has dealt with multiple deployments, she captures the challenges. We wish every person in Congress would study books like this so they have a full view of the impact of their decisions.
Kathie Hightower, coauthor of Help! I'm a Military Spouse...I Get a Life Too!

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Read!.......2007-07-06

I haven't even received my copy yet, but I've already read this book several times (borrowed from a friend) and wanted a copy of my own. From the moment I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. This book takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that you'll appreciate whether you're a military spouse or not. I cried along with the women during their trying times and rejoiced with them at their husband's homecomings. The author captures the essence of the moments exactly. I would reccomend this book to anyone looking for a good read, just remember to bring the tissues!

3 out of 5 stars good read for Military spouses.......2007-05-16

This was a decent book for Military spouses and civilians alike. It explains the hardships that we endure, the pain of saying goodbye to our loved ones, and the stress of running a household alone. I learned a few things from this book even though I've been a Marine's wife for a few years now. The only thing that I didn't really like about this book was that it focused too solely on Army spouses. It confused me, being that the author's husband is a Navy Chaplain serving with the Marine Corps. She definitely should have included Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force spouses in this book. And the whole situation with the one wife conspiring to get her husband out of the Army and speaking at anti-war protests was unbelievable. It's one thing to not agree with a war, but it's another thing to protest what your husband does for a living. All in all, I give this book 3 stars- it's a bit confusing at times, since it jumps around a lot. But I recommend it for a spouse who is new to military life, especially an Army spouse.

    **Until they all come home**

5 out of 5 stars A Moving Account of Deployment Issues for Those Left Behind.......2007-05-13

I was looking for information on deployment and got so much more from Kristin Henderson's book! Moving, emotional, real-life accounts that touch the heart and help us civilians better comprehend the challenges of wartime delpoyment. Kristin interviews a variety of spouses and 'significant others' recounting their respective experiences, all with very different perspectives.

It's definitely a book that you won't put down until the last chapter is read!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting.......2007-04-15

After reading so many wonderful reviews for this book, I felt that I needed to read it. My husband is currently deployed and I'm always looking for related books.

As I got further and further into the book I found I was increasingly disappointed. The book is very scattered - to the point of frequent confusion. While the stories of the women are very touching and easy to relate to, I found it difficult to keep all the the details for each story together because of the nature in which the book was written. Henderson does a good job of working through the policies of the Army, though again it was so scattered and frequently interjected in the middle of a story.

While the stories of the women are well told, I was disappointed that the aspect of being a wife with no children was practically ignored. Yes, one of the characters is childless, but Henderson didn't discuss that dynamic and that disappointed me. Not every military spouse has children, childless spouses face different (and hard) challenges because of that.

All in all it wasn't a bad book, but I wasn't as impressed with it as some of the other reviewers.

      Book Description

A roughout is the start of a carving that allows the carver to skip the first few steps to go right into the "good part". They're great for developing your creative eye, because they have a basic but distinct shape that lets your imagination take off. The rough figure might have its own shape, but no one said which side was the front, back, top, or bottom. That's up to you to decide. Hold the roughout one way and maybe you've got a grizzly old rebel in the making; turn it upside down and there's a lazy bullfrog. In his friendly, laid-back way, Tom Wolfe guides you step-by-step through the carving of an unlucky fisherman from his own roughout design. The emphasis here is on staying loose with the carving and seeing the endless possibilities you have in carving anything from the most basic shapes to the smallest details. A large full color gallery features a variety of characters all made from the same roughout. Don't look too far ahead, because you might miss something! , 301 color photos, 8 1/2" x 11"

      Book Description

Bateman and Snell have consistently discussed and explained the traditional, functional approach to management through planning (delivering strategic value), organizing (building a dynamic organization), leading (mobilizing people), and controlling (learning and changing). Management: Leading & Collaborating in a Competitive World retains its series of "firsts": first to have a chapter on diversity, first to devote a section to the natural environment, and first to relate a "bricks and clicks" theme to explain the challenges of managing in a New Economy. This new edition is no exception with an emphasis on leadership and collaboration as a means to success.

To survive competition and thrive in today’s world, you must perform in ways that give you an edge over your competitors. Four essential performance dimensions- cost, quality, speed, and innovation -when well done, deliver value to the customer and competitive advantage to students and their employers. In the new Seventh Edition of By reinforcing these new business practices in context with the functional approaches, the authors deliver a unique theme among all principles of management texts- how to manage, lead, and collaborate in ways that deliver results.

      Book Description

His keen grasp of human nature and a unique style of verse made Ogden Nash, in the mid-twentieth century, the most widely read and frequently quoted poet of his time. For years, readers have longed for a biography to match Nash's charm, wit, and good nature; now we have it in Douglas Parker's absorbing and delightful life of the poet. Intelligent, informative, and engaging.... There is no comparable study not only of Nash's life but also of the role that poetry, especially comic verse, played in modern American literary culture.... A story long overdue in the telling. --Dana Gioia

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Nashville.......2006-05-29

Loved the book. Ogden Nash? Not so much. As a little boy I loved his verses and would browse through THE NEW YORKER slapping the pages from left to right to see if they were carrying a new Nash poem that week. Often as not, they were, then I'd be happy, crawling away toward my treehouse to memorize his goofy sense of humor and his sophisticated attitude towards marriage. I can see how, without Ogden Nash, there might never have been a Stephen Sondheim. Parker is his ideal biographer. Obviously he had a lot of assistance from Nash's two enigmatic daughters, Linell and Isabel, whose photographs make them look like two grave Snow Whites. And yet he is not afraid to call a spade a spade, and we get the picture that the mother of these two girls, Frances, was often a Xanthippe for reasons unknown.

It's great that Parker did so much work towards reconstructing Nash's other life as a Broadway lyricist, and I'm sure that his account of Nash's work with Kurt Weill and with Vernon Duke will never be excelled.

He doesn't really pay much attention to the Hollywood work, however, and I don't know if he even bothered screening the Jeanette MacDonald starrer THE FIREFLY (co-written with Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett), which is nothing short of excellent.

The story gets grim as Nash ages and his career takes a nosedive. You get to despise Roger Angell, Nash's editor at THE NEW YORKER, for being such an obseqious Uriah Heep, even when he's rejecting Nash's latest efforts. It's like he delights in kicking Nash's butt while kissing it at the same time. Nash seems aware of Angell's double nature, but doesn't really know what to do about it. THE NEW YORKER seems like a velvet trap--can't live without it, but it tears you to pieces inside. I also enjoyed reading the parodies or pastiches of Nash's verse that Parker has collected from all different sources, from Dorothy Parker to Scott Fitzgerald, everyone wanted a piece of the man.

To top it all off, Dorothy Lamour got upset with Nash and laid into him with both barrels, when he wrote a poem for her to read on the air that contained the word "conundrum." She thought it risque, perhaps confusing it with "condom," and refused to save her reputation. Furious, she lashed out, "If you don't think I know what that word means--and that I'll be fool enough to say it on the air--you're crazy! I wasn't born yesterday!" Nash wrote to Frances, "she's very pleasant but as dumb as you would imagine." (Not as bad as his opinion of poor Ginger Rogers: "coarse, painted, dyed.")

5 out of 5 stars We Should Remember Nash.......2005-12-01

When I think of Ogden Nash, I think first of a poem I read in school a long time ago titled "The Purist." I have read it too many times to actually laugh out loud again, but I still smile when I read it. I become the kid I once was somehow, happy to hear the joke over and over again.

I think Ogden Nash brings back memories for many older Americans. When I was reading the new biography Ogden Nash: The Life and Work of America's Laureate of Light Verse by Douglas M. Parker, while eating a sweet roll in Panera last week, an older man noticed. As he passed my table he said, "Ah, Ogden Nash, he was a wonderful man." I noticed the older man, who looked like a retired executive, having a look of competence and industry, was cleaning tables. Was he laid off by a corporation, replaced by someone young? Was he working at Panera because he was unable to find a management job in the new economy, which disvalues the older, experienced worker? Is Nash for him a link to a happier time, his time?

Nash has often been a bright spot in a dark time. He became popular for his humorous poetry during the Great Depression when his works began to appear regularly in The New Yorker, Saturday Evening Post, and other magazines. Because he was never paid much for his poems, he had to write and sell a lot of them, which he continued to do into the 1960s, when changing tastes made his work harder to sell. By the time of his death in 1971, he had published over a thousand poems.

Nash did not only write poetry. He tried his hand as a book editor, magazine editor, screen writer, playwright, lyricist, and game show panelist. He was valued as an editor at Doubleday and other publishers, but the pay was poor and he left the profession to write fulltime. His efforts in Hollywood and on Broadway always started with lots of promise but usually fizzled. Radio and television appearances eventually paid fairly well, but poetry was his steady income.

Being a writer, he often worked from home. Unlike many men of his era, he seems to have spent much time with his two daughters. On several occasions, he was the primary parent as his wife took long European vacations. It may not have been difficult to do, as the family always had servants. His wife had her own money inherited from her "old family" Baltimore ancestors. She and Nash were always able to live the country club and martini life.

I think readers will enjoy learning how involved Nash was in the literary scene of the 1920s and 1930s. He knew Dorothy Parker, F. Scott Fitzgerald, E. B. White, and many others. Douglas M. Parker also tells much about mid-twentieth century world of publishing. Fans of The New Yorker will especially want to read this book.

Some will enjoy the book for their own memories. There are many Nash verses scattered throughout the text.

Read "The Purist." The punch line ends with a word that rhymes with "smile."

2 out of 5 stars Parker paints Nash in a fashion not smashin'.......2005-11-03

      The philosopher poet, Ogden Nash,
Though born and wed to privilege,
was throughout his lifetime frightfully far from bogged in cash
(Or at least he so lamented).
      Doug Parker says,
while assuring us his penury never quite prevented
Nash from keeping house or houses
      Servant-staffed while traveling
in luxury with wife and kids and friends with kids and spouses.
      Though his efforts yielded flops
      In Hollywood and Broadway ventures,
rhymes he wrote for glossies and anthologies and his hops
      Around the lecture circuit
      (Which, though ruinous
To his fragile health, he never would quite shirk it)
      Kept his ledger black enough.
      Indeed, couplets comparing
the speed of bonbons versus bourbon and similar wacky stuff
      (Like rhymes that ridiculed
      A bluenosed "Ut" named Smoot
whose Senate stint by tariff acts and smiting smut was fueled)
      Consistently kept Mr. Nash `n'
      Fran `n' Lin `n' Isabel
(his wife and daughters) living in quite comfy fashion.
Nash's life was not a bore,
      But Parker's grand obsession
With minutia made me often want to holler "Less is more!"
      And, moreover, many others'
      In the story, though tangential,
Had lives of greater interest were I to voice my `druthers.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is a Real Treat.......2005-08-23

Many of us probably recognize Ogden Nash as the creator of humorous poetry, but he was a man of far greater accomplishments than might be generally known. In this biography, Doug Parker gives a very complete and fascinating overview of Nash and the diversity of his works, which included movie scripts and--much to my surprise--song lyrics. Parker relates his story in manageable sequences, interspersing just enough famous lines from Nash to lure the reader into wanting to read more of the man's work. One would think that Parker knew Nash personally because of the skillful manner in which he discreetly discusses the poet's health problems, his devotion to his family, his dislike of confrontation, and the entire span of his creative life.

It took an impressive amount of research to create this interesting account of Nash's life, and Parker made much use of Nash's personal letters. He does not overwhelm the reader with excessive detail, rather, he leaves the reader feeling like one who has enjoyed a great meal but has not overeaten, and who knows he can come back for seconds by reading more of Nash's work. This is an enjoyable and informative book that gives the reader a real appreciation for the talents of Ogden Nash.

Mr. Parker has written a terrific biography of a fasinating man. The book is meticulously researched and beautifully written. I was very impressed with this scholarly work and I am anxious to read Mr. Parker's next endeavor. Highly recommended!

        5 out of 5 stars Scholarly conclusions.......2005-10-11

In _America's Forgotten Wars_, Sarkesian draws some basic conclusions that are not entirely original. But his approach was scholarly and well organized in making those conclusions.

        1. American culture breeds a belief in "just" wars where we do not fight unless provoked. At times, such as in Vietnam where the
provocation was questionable, the American people and the citizen
soldiers found it difficult to fully support the fight.

        2. In many of America's low-intensity conflicts (Seminole wars, the Phillipine uprising, the Punitive expedition into Mexico, Vietnam),other political concerns took center stage. This has been one factorin the tendency of US forces to not learn from those experiences - seeing them as side-wars that were not "real" wars in the conventionally-focused organization of the US military.

        3. The US military (primarily the author focuses on the Army) has a culture fed by the American culture of Euro-centrist thinking that fails to take into account the rest of the world with much
significance. This feeds the tendency toward conventional warfare
thinking in political leadership as well as military organization. The conventional mindset is further strengthened by a growing dependence on technology in waging wars since technology most readily supports conventional conflict but is often less effective in counter-insurgency.

Sarkesian organized this book into 3 or 4 views of the subject:
        1. State of the Nation (the political and cultural background of the US military)

        2. Military Posture (the military organization at the time of the
conflict and how it is postured whether peacetime or wartime footing at the hostilities begin)

        3. Nature of the Conflict (the political-military effectiveness of the enemy and how it is perceived by our military and political leadership)

He appears to have followed that same organization in a subsequent book, _Unconventional Conflicts in a New Security Era_.

It's hard to say how private investigators would react to books like J. J. Luna's How to Be Invisible--while it makes their jobs a lot harder, most of them are paid by the hour. If you want to withdraw from the snooping eyes of the government, corporations, stalking ex-boyfriends, or practically anyone else, this practical, down-to-earth guide will help you and your family vanish. It's not a glamorous James Bond life Mr. Luna is inviting you to take part in; it's probably much like the life you're living right now. Spending much of the early part of the book frightening the reader with tales of stalkers and mistaken identities, the author successfully makes his case that a few adjustments to an individual's personal information flow can make a life-or-death difference. While getting his plan off the ground will take a bit of planning and effort (you have to move at least once to clear your trail), it is sustainable and worthwhile even for those who think they have nothing to hide. Learn about anonymous travel and purchase, using trusts and corporations to keep your assets private, and how recent laws (the book's date of publication is 2000) significantly affect older methods of guaranteeing privacy. Luna makes no claim to know the law where you live and suggests that you consult a trusted local attorney before implementing most of his advice. Just knowing how easily a criminal can learn about and exploit your personal information will make you want to do just that. --Rob Lightner

        Book Description

For most of us, privacy means an unlisted telephone number. But what about your Social Security number? Your credit card numbers? Your bank account statements? Your personal health data? You may think this information is also secure, but if you've ever ordered anything over the Internet, or if your credit card is on file at the local video store just in case you never return that copy of Titanic, or if you throw out bank statements without shredding them, then this information is now in the public domain and can easily be discovered and used against you by a private eye, a computer hacker, or even a vengeful neighbor or former lover. Once people gain control of even a shred of your personal information, they can gain control of your life. They can transform this information into access to your assets, your loved ones, even your identity. And once your privacy is gone, there's very little you can do to get it back.J. J. Luna, a highly trained and experienced security consultant, can show you how to achieve the privacy you crave, whether you just want to shield yourself from casual scrutiny or take your life savings and disappear without a trace. He reveals the shocking secrets that private detectives use to uncover information, and then shows you how to safeguard against them.Filled with vivid real-life stories drawn from the headlines and from Luna's own consulting experience, How to Be Invisible is the essential guide to preserving your personal security. Privacy is commonly lamented as the first casualty of the Information Age-- but that doesn't mean you have to stand for it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Privacy Techniques.......2006-08-07

This is an excellent book on privacy techniques. What I like about it is that JJ Luna discusses various levels of privacy, and I have found that the more privacy you want, the more time/effort you will have to go through to maintain it. He talks about how to go about receiving your mail, where to choose to live, how use the phone, how to pay people, and how to title assets more privately. I like this book because JJ Luna does not try to force a one size fits all agenda upon people, but lets the reader decide on what level of privacy is right for them. There are varying levels of privacy which can be obtained for each one, depending on your circumstances (e.g. family, job, etc). Of course, the more privacy you want, the more you will have to sacrifice, but most of these techniques are simple and won't take too much extra time out of your week.

Another thing this book goes into is how to work in a more private fashion. There are varying degrees to this as well and to obtain the highest levels of privacy, JJ Luna ultimately suggests to become self-employed. He touches on some points on that as well, but if you want more on that, then also be sure to check out his other book called Work From Home At Any Age (ISBN 0976387239), which I also highly recommend.

        5 out of 5 stars Powerful information.......2005-07-10

I do not generally take the time to write long reviews. I spend my time living and I read a lot of non-fiction books with the desire to deepen it. I submit ratings for those books I loved most. This is one of them. Read it. Whoever J.J. Luna is he challenges readers of his book to go ahead and TRY to find him. I say don't bother, you won't. This guy is for REAL.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on privacy so far.......2004-02-17

Even with the changes in the laws, this is still one of the best books available. However, don't buy this book, wait for the 2004 edition coming out very soon.

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start.......2004-02-01

A great book. I've also read "How to Hide Your Assets and Disappear" but this was a much better book. It's pretty discouraging because once you read this you will realize that the government really has us trapped. The key is not giving out your SS number or drivers license number or having your name attached to your "real" address. Both are almost impossible without a lot of work. I wish I had a book like this years ago. The version I read was printed a year before
9/11 so things have gotten much worse in terms of privacy, but this is a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Not too shabby........2003-12-12

This book won't really make you disappear, but it will help. Better than nothing.

The Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests: the Americas is the best resource there is for researching and understanding the present state of tropical forests throughout the Americas as well as the historical and projected concerns for the forests. The atlas provides beautifully colored, detailed maps of various forests, effects and extent of deforestation, accounts of active as well as proposed conservation efforts. It is wonderfully insightful and meticulously well-edited. Nothing I have read in the past can compare.
