    Book Description

For Her Good Estate recounts the trials and triumphs of a fourteenth-century English noblewoman. Elizabeth de Burgh led a tumultuous early life: an arranged marriage, an abduction leading to a clandestine second marriage, a forced third marriage to a man who died a traitor. Afterwards, empowered by a vow of chastity to insure her independence, Elizabeth emerged as a capable administrator of her vast estates, a concerned mother and grandmother, a shrewd builder of social and political networks, and a good friend. She expressed her piety by many charitable initiatives, culminating in the foundation of Clare College, Cambridge University, a demonstration of her devotion to God and to learning. This book is the first biography of this remarkable woman. Frances Underhill shows how deeply gender issues influenced her life and how admirably Elizabeth rose above them to impact the lives of others. Hedged in by gender barriers, Underhill reveals, Elizabeth achieved prestige among her contemporaries and left a lasting legacy after her death.

        Book Description

In this book version of the official report presented to First Lady Laura Bush, the reader will find the same contents that were included in the actual report. This report marks the first-ever time that such an undertaking was performed for the nation's first lady. The report - designed as a service to assist Mrs. Bush in meeting the demands of her new role - contains advice for the first lady and her senior staff as well as information on the history, challenges, and duties associated with the Office of the First Lady. The contributors include the former first ladies, public officials, and leading historians of the first ladyship. The Office of the First Lady is arguably the most intriguing and demanding "unpaid job" in the country. The president's wife is in the unique position to wield significant power and influence as she presides over White House social affairs and important social projects, while serving as the president's most trusted confidante and one of the country's most celebrated women.

5 out of 5 stars "MUST HAVE" book if you work from home!.......2007-10-04

I came across this book a few years after it was written so knew there was a chance the advice might be outdated. This was a risk I was willing to take because I've been so impressed with Kristie T's websites (voted one of the best by Dr. Phil!) and her support of work-at-home moms. What a great purchase!

This book is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to making money from home while keeping your eye on the real prize . . . your family and quality of life. This book is easy to read, entertaining, supportive and soooo informative. It includes a massive resource section for those who work from home.

As a mom of three who has run home businesses and coached others in this area, Kristie's book has a "walk the talk" feel. What mom can't relate to her touching and humorous stories of the realities of raising little ones (the trials and joys)! Yet, the book has substance, including many action lists, web and written resources and helpful templates.

In my opinion, the appeal of this book goes way beyond work-at-home moms. Any home office professional who wants to make their work environment more efficient, their time more productive, and their business more profitable needs to read this book. It is an excellent guide for any home business owner. Buy this book for your business reference library today!

2 out of 5 stars For a woman-entrepreneur with assets to invest, not for stay-at-home Mom.......2006-09-30

I am not sure how this book got such great reviews. It really misleaded and dissapointed me. It is for a woman with significant resources to start with, who doesn't need all the dry tips listed, but not for stay-at-home Mom. And it is a business oriented, not life oriented. It is not 'A Mom's guide to working from home', but a business women's guide to get more organized and hire multiple services for the business developement. There is nothing absolutely about Mom's life and for Mom's life. It is a big text however and probably can be useful for someone, but mostly dry and a reference-like, big doesn't mean good. Gives an advise how to choose an office chair, a domain name, purchase a web-site design, organize a radio appearance, etc., and some tips that you know from a common sense. It is a self-promotional book leading to the author's web site to promote her coaching business. I returned it. May be it can work for someone else...

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Helpful Ideas.......2005-04-05

Kriste's passion for helping work-at-home moms is evident in all that she does and this book is no exception.

She walks her talk in supporting work-at-home moms- she was kind enough to grant me an interview to put in my e-book "A Mother's Dream: Finding Fulfillment in Your Home Business".

Any mother interested in balancing working from home with motherhood should get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, what a book !.......2004-07-23

I have read and ALSO promote this book for Kristie and I have to tell you that if you are really thinking about working from home and running an online business, you NEED to read this book. The information she has in this book can make or break anyone who wants to run a business from home. I would like to thank Kristie as well for giving me the opportunity to promote this book and for the book itself, I love it! There are many work at home books on the market today, but this book stands alone, read all the reviews, they can't all be wrong! Thanks Kristie for a wonderful work at home book.

I think this book is encapsulating everything negative that can be said of a biography of an artist. Mainly it is redundant.
The book claims to be 'The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath'. To some extent it is. To a larger extent it is biography of a certain time slot, the one when the novel was written.
The 'journal' is just not really worth reading, not to talk about reading an expansion with introduction, commentary, and notes, which brings it almost to a normal size pocket book.
It is full of trivia that nobody needs to know!
Disclaimer: I enjoy reading Steinbeck."The Grapes of Wrath" is one of the great novels of the last century. Not all biographies are a waste of time.
                                    (But this one is.)
(2 stars because it does contain some original Steinbeck text, presumably. Well, sort of. Even that is not so clear. The manuscript is lost, we only have the first typescript done by a staff stenotypist. Well.)

2 out of 5 stars skimming the surface with diary entries.......2006-01-31

I found this book to be less informative than I thought it was going to be. I was hoping to see more of whats happened in Steinbeck's physche during his labor over The Grapes Of Wrath, but it doesnt really happen. This almost feels like he was asked to perform this task and he did it as an assignment rather than a labor of love.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not Insightful.......2001-04-11

I found this work diary of Steinbeck to be far less informative than I had imagined it would be. Aside from his daily ruminations that he was unsure if "Grapes" would be a good book, there was little revealed as to his creative process. How did he create his characters? Why did he use certain plot devices? Where did his inspirations come from? All this was lacking.

If you read Christopher Tolkien's works on his father's "Lord of the Rings," you see the work created before you. You can see how a character developed, how a plot changed. In "Working Days" there is none of that. It is simply repetitive admonitions to himself to work harder. It became tedious and a great many times I wondered if the editor had simply repeated previous entries and only changed their number.

"Working Days" is interesting, but don't be fooled into thinking you are going to be there at the birth of a great novel.

5 out of 5 stars great book from a great writer.......2001-03-31

If you enjoyed reading Grapes of Wrath, or any other books by Steinbeck...get this book. If you want to follow a writer through the process of creating an important novel, get this book. The daily journal entries written by Steinbeck show the ebb and flow of his moods, his confidence that he was indeed writing a great book, and those days when he felt that he lacked the talent to pull it off. It is rare to get the opportunity to watch an artist create....this is pretty darn close. And a good read!

                                    5 out of 5 stars A journal of a masterpiece getting written.......2001-01-03

Working Days is for Steinbeck readers or any student of creative processes and habits of successful people. John Steinbeck wrote the beefy The Grapes of Wrath like a freight train, averaging 2,000 words a day in longhand, from June through October, 1938. He did not do this in isolation. He got up an average of five days a week, had breakfast, wrote in his journal, then went to work until early evening, while hammers from neighborhood construction pounded relentlessly, amid human intrusions of all kinds, a souring stomach and self doubt. He was a purposeful journal-keeper, using it to set the goals for the day, to talk himself into character development and plot movement. No doubt the journal also served to subconsiously swat away the distractions so he could focus on the work. Working Days is edited by Robert Demott who has seemingly devoted his career to the meticulous scrutiny of Steinbeck's life, works and habits. If there can be a criticism of this volume, it's that Demott hovers too much; his is, for instance, one of the longest critical introductions I've come across. But this does not detract from the enjoyment of crawling around in Steinbeck's mind, which the journal freely permits.

The ancient Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu once wrote about the "acme of skill" allowing generals to win wars without fighting. Perhaps he was referring to the 21st century: technological advances have made recent conflicts in the Persian Gulf and the Balkans almost bloodless for the United States, if not its enemies. Yet many of the authors contributing chapters to The Changing Role of Information in Warfare are far from sanguine about technology forever insulating Americans from war. Technology, in fact, may become a kind of Achilles heel. "The United States may become increasingly vulnerable to disruption--perhaps catastrophically so--because of its heavy reliance on advanced information systems in both the civilian and military sectors," write editors Zalmay M. Khalilzad and John P. White in their introduction.
Adversaries are likely to rely on modern information operations, such as computer hacking or network attacks--in addition to traditional means, such as communication jamming and physical attacks--as an asymmetric strategy to compensate for their own weaknesses and for conventional U.S. military preeminence. They may value information attacks as a new type of guerilla warfare against U.S. conventional weaponry--but one with a very long reach.
There are other problems, too. In the past, for example, the Pentagon often initiated technological change; in the future, it will struggle to keep up with advances in the private sector. This probing book is written chiefly for policymakers, but its clean prose makes it accessible to anyone interested in the future of war. --John J. Miller

                                        Book Description

Advanced information technologies will have a profound effect on our national security. Driven by the need to understand this revolution and to take steps towards defending against information attack, the editors provided this thorough examination of information warfare, with implications for the U.S. and other countries.

This book should not be read by those who only have a low-level interest in information warfare, and more specifically, information in warfare. This is an academic document for policy makers and the defense establishment, as commissioned by the Air Force. The focus is on the information-based processes and weapons and their interaction. I found valuable concepts and ideas throughout the book, especially in one of last chapters about lessons the DOD can learn from business. For those in defense with a need to discover the wide aspects of IIW, this is for you. But only if you are in a mid- to high-level position or thirst for knowledge of greater concepts.

This national best-seller brilliantly analyzes America in the 1980s from the election of Ronald Reagan through to the end of the decade.  The author points a vivid portrait not only of Reagan's presidency, but also of the Iran-Contra affair, the boom times on Wall Street and the religious revival led by Swaggart, Bakker et al.

5 out of 5 stars Asleep at the Wheel.......2007-09-27

I have often contended that Ronald Reagan was the most over rated president during the second half of the twentieth century, and Haynes Johnson makes this case in his book. The neocon debacle of the past few years had its roots during the Reagan years in the eighties. Reagan's naps were legendary (hence the title of the book), and his record for the most vacation time spent during a presidency stood firm for twenty years, until 2007, when you-know-who breezed past.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopedic account of the 80's viewed through a political lens.......2007-07-21

Most Neo-Cons, Republicans and conservatives will hate this book. However, the book is well researched, well-crafted politica history of America during the Reagan Administration. Reaganphiles will hate it because it details the many scandals, crimes and missteps of Reagan and his people. It's hard to put a positive spin on US support for Noriega, Iran-Contra, Central American covert wars, the nasty side-effects of deregulation, etc, and to some, that's Haynes Johnson's only real crime. The narrative tries to arrange itself chronologically and by topic, which works well. There's a couple of spots that are dull, but then it's not an Ian Fleming novel.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Not a Reagan fan.......2007-07-20

The book is highly documented and would be devasting to the Reagan worshipers if they read it with open minds. I am still not clear as to what degree the author is saying that Reagan was out of touch, incompetent, "out of the loop", and whether his handlers wanted to have it both ways: Reagan the wise sage when convenient, and asleep at the wheel when things went badly.

5 out of 5 stars CAREFUL, OBJECTIVE, THE FACTS WITHOUT COMMENT FROM A TRUE PROFESSIONAL GENTLEMAN JOURNALIST HISTORIAN/ THE TRUTH OF REAGAN/BUSH.......2007-06-29

This good book provides a healthy and bracing antidote to the recently forged Reagan Diary hoax, although this book seems soft on REagan, Bush, Ollie North and the rest. But that is simply the author's professional and gentle style from an earlier age of journalism, long before the rage of Hannity, Coulter and O'Reilly, when Rush was still an oddity and an anomaly, when journalism was not yet mere slap down steel cage entertainment but the scholarly presentation of historical facts clearly and concisely, as in this book, as in Murrow, as in IF Stone.

This book contains the facts of that age, objectively written by a trained journalist and historian and a true professional and gentleman with full access to all parties, the objective truth and facts about the long national nightmare which was and still is the Reagan/Bush dynastic regime, from which we as a nation still struggle to awaken and may never succeed.

As you can see I would prefer a little more polemic on the part of the author, but he is a skilled professional correctly concerned with maintaining his access to all parties and yet presenting the truth. Thus, while restraining himself from commenting directly nor editorializgin at length regarding the phenomena of that time, he skillfully does so indirectly through quotes from the players and writers of that age. We therefore read the harshest words regarding Reagan coming from the mouth of none other than Dick Cheney, quoted at great length. Haynes can wear the velvet glove and fine demeanor, and let others speak the truth no matter whom it disturbs from their eager slumber.

THe most telling section comes near the end with a closing factual summation of the effects of the Reagan administration, moving us from our position as the world's greatest lender nation to its deepest debtor nation, a depth of debt ever spiralling downwards, the destruction of our industrial and our agricultrural base, the destruction of our technological research and development, the destruction of our moral base as a nation from the largesse and self sacrifice called for so effectively by President Kennedy to the lust and unregulated greed under Reagan. We see the facts, gently presented of all of the Reagan scandals, noted by Haynes Johnson calmly in passing without outrage we might expect now, like a bored tour guide might indicate the town square stone, but letting us read the horrors there written.

For this is the teflon journalist. He points out the truth of the horror and the mud and the corruption and the dirt, but none of it sticks to him. He is too clever for that. Yet we read between the lines and we read directly the lines and we see the truth of that horrendous administration.

We must read again this book and remember the truth, for we have fallen far more deeply and we cannot get up. Whereas Reagan cut taxes and went into debt to fund his military nmonstrosities and absurdities, we go far more deeply into dept to fund an unfounded yet endless war in Iraq, consuming officially $86 billion every six months, but actually much much more for no clear nor strategic reason. We have lost nearly four thousands officially counted servicemen and women, yet actually much much more, including in civilians, women and children murdered, for what purpose.

Thus this book with its modest figures of corruption, administrative negligence and wasteful military spending bankrupting us for generations to come as our infrastructure collapses and melts down, seems like small change compared to what is happening now. Read this book, read the facts, and you will see. Reagan played Nero to the current Caligula.

Excellent book requiring space in every school library and in every truly patriotic American home. Well written, judicious, careful and correct.

4 out of 5 stars An American Dreamer.......2006-12-31

This book is quite revealing about the typical left-leaning worldview of its author : his interpretation of recent facts and its fundamental lack of any understanding of economics such as believing that the financial industry is not wealth creating. As such it is an interesting read.

Although I don't share many of Mr Johnson's views I did enjoy the book and of course it's not the facts that I would dispute (deficits, Iran Contra etc.), but their interpretation and their selection.

To be slightly more concrete about the leaving out of facts let me state one that I was amazed not to find any mention of: Reagan's role in accelerating the decline of the Soviet empire by confrontation rather than accommodation. He was thought of as a dreamer when he called to Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall - well the dreamers saw it come down.

                                                        1 out of 5 stars huh?.......2005-05-29

i dont like having to reread pages because i have no idea what i just read. Organized HORRIBLY, seems as though there is almost no concise outline, uses overly complex and lengthy examples to explain simple concepts, and like said before extremely dry.

                                                        1 out of 5 stars boring.......2001-04-23

This text is very dry which maks it hard to read. It does seem to be a great source of fact type information though.
