Book Description
Poet and soldier, misanthrope and philosopher, Frederick the Great was a contradictory, almost unfathomable, man.His conquests made him one of the most formidable and feared leaders of his era.But as a patron of artists and intellectuals, Frederick recreated Berlin as one of the continent's great cities and matched his state's reputation for military ferocity with one for cultural achievement.Though history remembers Frederick as a "Potsdam Fhrer," but his father more rightly earned the title. When, as a youth, Frederick attempted to flee the elder man's brutality, the punishment was to watch the execution of his friend and co-conspirator, Katte.Though a subsequent compromise allowed Frederick to take the throne in 1740, he would remain true unto himself: his tastes for music, poetry, and architecture would match the significance of his military triumphs in the Seven Years' War.Drawing on the most recent scholarship, Giles MacDonogh's fresh, authoritative biography gives us the fully rounded portrait yet of an often misunderstood king.

Pictures Missing.......2007-07-16
I enjoyed this book, but I've purchased it twice and, despite the list of illustrations in the front, there isn't one picture in the book. I would love it if I could find a copy that was printed with the pictures.
Excellent read.......2005-11-12
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a great introduction to this important figure in European history.
Middle Europe The Great.......2001-03-30
In a society stuffed with anglophiles and, more recently, celticphiles, we have little history available on Middle Europe and its grandeur. We know that it produced the most terrible army of the 20th Century. We also know of colorful snippets about how 18th Century German mercenaries lent a hand in Britain's fruitless effort to keep 13 American colonies from becoming an indepent nation.
The book gives a much deserved look at how Middle Europe's nations evolved through marriage, annexing and (naturlich) war. Frederick is taken off of his pedestal for us to take a closer look, and the authors shows us Frederick's warts and all. His family, especially his father, plays a vitol role in the book, which the author infers that this is a key element in driving Frederick to succeed.
If there is a shortcoming in the book, it would be the battles. Though the book was not published to be a historical guide on tactics and strategics, I would like to know more on how the protagonist became so land rich at Prussia's zenith.
So why was he "great?".......2001-03-07
After reading this book, I still didn't know why Frederick II of Prussia had been accorded the title "the Great" by history. This volume spends a lot of time on detailing the personal life of a very flawed man, and very little explaining why he was a seminal force in 18th century politics. I finally turned to his entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica, which in a short article did a better job of explaining Frederick's place in history than this book did.
Other flaws in this book: for those of us not familiar with 18th century European political geography, a map or two would have been helpful; without maps, it's impossible to understand Frederick's political machinations or (especially) his military campaigns. Also, incredibly, among the pictures there is not a single one of Frederick's queen!
For amateur and enthusiast alike.......2000-05-19
At times criticized and commended for its focus on merely Frederick, rather than Frederick the Great, MacDonogh's effort merits the attention of amateurs and enthusiasts alike. In a relatively brief space, MacDonogh is able to reveal a great deal of primary insight about a man who distinguished himself not only with the sword, but also a pen, a flute, etc. MacDonogh also demonstrates his ability to use the personalities to illustrate the time; weaving a thread through the German principalities of Frederick's youth is difficult enough without the need to discuss the circumstances of Frederick, his father and the machinations of foreign and Prussian envoys and courtiers. MacDonogh has given us an insightful piece about a man who lived a life full of something for everyone.

I love Haley!.......1999-12-08
I read the book when it was first released and actually I just "happened" upon it. I was and am still the BIGGEST Charles Haley fan and I was just looking to get any memorablia that I could. I thought the book was great because it explained why he played so hard and why he felt the way he did about things going on in the NFL. I think that he is a great player and he is just misunderstood by players, coaches and fans alike. If you read the book then you would gain more insight on him and his thinking. And being one of his biggest fans, I guess that I am a bit biased on this review. But he was very frank and candid in his portrayal of the NFL. He didn't sugarcoat anything. Also it showed how committed he was to playing the sport and committed to his personal life as well. The only thing that could have changed was some of the foul language but again I think that that was just him being Charles Haley. Anyone knowing anything about him knows that he does not hold his tongue, not even on live television. So you would have to expect that from his writing. I would love for him to read this so he will know that he has one devoted fan in me!
A great book for the true Dallas fans!.......1998-08-24
Haley expresses his views (openly) on everything from racism in the NFL to the physical and emotional toll the game takes on its players. He doesn't hold anything back and just tells it how it is. Not many players get to play for two great teams (like the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers) and win Super Bowls with each. He's a legendary player and that explains why he's the only man to earn five Super Bowl rings. This is a very well-written book and a great one for the true Dallas fans!
Very blunt, but very good........1997-11-13
I enjoyed Charles Haley's book very much. He talks VERY openly about the NFL and the pressures put on every player. Pressure from the coaches, the media, and the players themselves. Not to mention the disregard many players show for their own health to keep playing, and the drugs they take to do so. I enjoyed Charles' style very much. Some may find it offensive, but if you expected anything different from him what were you thinking when you bought the book?
Haley's comet has come to rest in the nether regions........1997-10-15
Charles Haley returns to the trenches; this time however, he uses the muck and mud to bury real and imagined enemies in the National Football League.
"All the Rage: The Life of an NFL Renegade," are exhausting anecdotes of the petty grudges, lacking any greater reference point than "I got even," of a former football great. They say defensive linemen to be successful must be mean and meanspirited, profane and not profound. Somebody, unfortunately, offered the same advice to Haley the writer.
At its best the book is unsportsmanlike conduct; at its worst, no gain for reader, writer and the many enemies of Mr. Haley.

NonfictionLarge Print Edition(Bette Davis fans) will purr with delight . . . starred, BooklistBette Davis was both a box-office superstar and a consummate actress, whose career spanned the early 1930s and the late 1980s. Since her death, a new generation of fans has been fascinated by this woman ahead of her time. Unlike the prior biographies, this is a book of interviews conducted by the author from the mid 1970s on. Davis candidly discusses (and dishes) husbands, beaux, costars, rivals, movies and growing old. This is her story in the voice of the woman who always spoke for herself.

Bette tells all - or did she?.......2006-02-27
Some resident reviewers say that this is Bose's book made up about Bette. There is enough material here that reads like the Bette we all read about, to make a good read with confidence she pitched her remarks where she wanted them to go. The only dubious report is Bose getting her in interview to almost admit to her affair with Howard Hughes whereas our Bette was quoted as saying she was "the only star in Hollywood who didn't have an affair with H.Hughes". Well, it's iffy. But who cares now? Her photos included here are lovely - it breaks your heart. Anyone who has worked in the industry knows they all dished the dirt - it was their world, present and future and they reveled in it. They were all larger than life. This book does in effect find a balance between Bette the Difficult and Bette, the professional actor born with great drive and talent who just wanted to do the best job everytime.
a little too polished, if you catch my drift.......2004-01-04
As a newspaper editor for over 30 years, I've learned how to judge a writer -- If he consistently comes up with quotes "too good to be true," they usually are.
What a dupe!.......2003-10-01
More posthumous interviews from beyond the grave, courtesy of one of Hollywood's most prolific and definitely least credible star scribblers. Funny how Boze Hadleigh (a total unknown when these sessions allegedly took place)somehow coaxed these incredibly candid (and wildly out-of-character) remarks from some of the most publicity-savvy stars in show biz. So what do Davis and every other big name in this book have in common?THEY'RE NOT AROUND TO DEFEND THEMSELVES--AND EVERYONE KNOWS YOU CAN"T LIBEL THE DEAD. If he's really smart, Hadleigh would market a CD compilation of all his old taped interviews. But that might be problematic, eh, Boze???
Highly Questionable "Interviews".......2002-07-11
These "interviews" sound nothing like Bette Davis as anyone who ever read the scores of bona fide interviews she gave over the years. Miss Davis was hot-tempered and sharp-tongued at times but her fans know she was really something of a prude so it seems highly questionable she would dish dirt like this. (Remember she had a feud with her last film director because the film included a dark comic joke concerning Joan Crawford which Miss Davis thought was in terrible taste. And Joan was of course no friend of Bette's!!) This frankly reads more like a drag queen's nightclub act not an interview with a star. I don't know a single movie buff who believes Mr. Hadleigh's books.
Is it authentic?.......2000-11-18
When I read the customer reviews of this book, I was thinking of buying it -- because it contained so much "new" material. However, I looked up the customer reviews of other books by this author, and now have serious doubts about his "journalistic" ethics. Maybe he made the whole thing up. In any case, after reading about his other books, I'm not interested in this one.

All the analysis has been computer-checked. A manual of attacking chess, from one of the world's best tacticians. This books is far more than a collection of superbly analysed games, however. John Nunn.......2006-03-18
[...]I go to. I especially like that it includes victories over many top player, it features in-depth analysis of topical opening variations, all the analysis has been computer-checked and that it is also a manual of attacking chess, from one of the world's best authors.
40 games from one of the greatest attacking players ever.......2005-02-13
This book follows on from "Secrets of Grandmaster Play", which John Nunn previously co-authored with PC Griffiths, so it begins in 1985 when Nunn was already a world-class grandmaster. As he points out, the style is slightly different from the earlier book in being rather more personal and giving more psychological insights and anecdotes. The effect is to make it a more enjoyable read, if slightly less intense.
I have always thought of Nunn as a classical chess player, in that he studies the opening profoundly, seeks to gain advantage (or equalize) in orthodox - though vigorous - fashion, and also has great strength in the endgame. This combination of erudition and straightforwardness makes him a particularly good subject to emulate. These 40 games are annotated really deeply, although the opening analysis needs to be checked for new discoveries in the ten years since publication.
Perhaps the high point of this collection is Nunn's 25-move victory over Sokolov of the USSR at the Dubai Olympiad, 1986. Wiping a top Soviet player off the board so unceremoniously was something that British players hardly ever did until Nunn and Tony Miles came along. (They were usually happy to draw).
The openings reflect Nunn's fairly stable repertoire - assorted Black defences to his 1. e4, with quite a few Sicilians, and a high proportion of King's Indians as black. Unfortunately the book lacks an index, and the brief table of contents does not say what opening was played in each game. So there is nothing for it but to read methodically through from start to finish. Thanks to Nunn's exciting style and painstaking, literate notes - spiced up by the occasional amusing story - this is no sacrifice at all.
Great collection of games.......1998-02-08
This book contains 314 pages pure chess. A selection of John Nunns best games with in-depth analysis of each stage (opening, middlegame, endgame). And instead of just giving variations, you will find variations AND written comments showing the strategy and explaining the decisions. It is great to learn every stage of chess playing and chess psychology.

Timeshare Pro.......2007-01-16
Best book in the business. Thank you Rita, you helped to make me #1 for the English line, for 3 years straight. I have recommended this book to all my colleages, and they have improved their closing by 10%. All the other books out there are a waste of money, because they don't pertain to timeshare. Please, write one for T.O.'s , now, because I will need that soon, and the T.O.'s need it now!!
Vaction Ownership Sales Training: The One on One Successful Training Guide.......2006-01-17
I have been in timeshare sales for over 8 years and this is by far what I would call the "bible" of timeshare. I use it as a handbook to carry and I give it to all my sales trainees. It is the best.
Reviewing the competition!.......2005-03-24
This will be one of the strangest reviews you've ever read:
Although I'm a direct competitor of Rita Bruegger's (fellow speaker/sales trainer), and of her book, "Vacation Ownership Selling" (because of my books, "The Closers-Parts 1 & 2" and "The Art & Science of Resort Sales"), I love her material. Seriously!
Why?
Because she knows what she's talking about! And because, where her material might miss a point or two, mine fills in . . . and visa versa! In fact, if I had my druthers, her material and mine would be sold together as a set. But, in the meantime, invest in both of 'em anyway. Rita is a real sales professional, so you simply can't go wrong!
P.S.
I've never met or even talked to Rita. I know her only by reputation and the quality of her work.
Note: You may have noticed that all of my book reviews carry "5 Star" ratings (*****). But that's not the sign of a "soft reviewer." I only review books to which I can honestly give a "5 Star" rating. You may assume, therefore, that any sales training/self-improvement book without my "5 Star" rating is either something less that "5 Star," or I simply haven't gotten to it yet . . . and there are certainly plenty of those!
Best Book on Timeshare Sales!!!!!!!.......2004-04-05
This is one on the most helpful books I've ever read on the subject of timeshare sales. So thankful to have found it and worth every penny of the investment. Add it to your library today!!!!!
A comprehensive compendium of industry wisdom.......2003-02-26
This is a quite exceptional volume. Books of any kind on vacation ownership are uncommon; literate and genuinely valuable books on the subject can certainly be counted on the fingers of one hand (probably excluding thumbs...). If you sell timeshare, you simply cannot afford not to master everything in this book; if you just want to understand how timeshare works and how it is sold, you need not even begin to look elsewhere. Sales people - here is a seasoned, intelligent, and successful professional telling you how to do it. What more could you ask for, other than for them to write you a check?

The Yankee sailor that saved the Chinese Empire.......2004-12-18
In 1859 a 28 year-old sailing officer from Salem Massachusetts took service under the Chinese Empire to defend it from mortal danger. When this young man died in battle in 1863 he had put down the largest and bloodiest civil war in human history (the American Civil War raging at the same time pales in comparison), he had been made a general and a mandarin, he had married a Chinese princess, and he was interred in his own temple. Perhaps most impressively was the fact that he did all of this while retaining the reputation among his friends and foes of being a man of decency, fairness, honor and incorruptibility. And yet for all this, he is nearly forgotten in both his native and adopted country.
Frederick Townsend Ward's history was erased largely because he was feared by both his Manchu masters and by the European powers that were seeking to dismember China for their own mercenary ends. The author speculates that due to his contempt for the cruelty and corruption of the Manchu's, that had he survived, he might have turned the instrument of his "Ever Victorious Army" against them in order to restore the Ming Dynasty. Had that happened, the history of China could have far different in the century that followed. It is clear that Ward found the concept of ending the Empire as unthinkable- which is why the later republic never honored his memory.
One other thing struck me while reading this book: Ward wanted to attend West Point but was not able to obtain an appointment because he lacked "connections." In the long run this didn't seem to hurt him too much....
If this story were fiction it would surely be dismissed as too far-fetched to ever be believed.
devil soldier.......2003-12-11
A very enjoyable tale of a colorful historical character. Carr has a real flair for bringing such a strange time to life, and making it feel familiar. He talks about the Taiping rebellion as if it only happened yesterday, which adds to the sense of reportage and realism. I'm looking forward to the reputed John Woo movie adaptation, although someone should have checked the illustrations before they were finalised. My copy prints Ward's battle-flag upside down -- doubly embarrassing since it is the right way up on the book's cover.
Fascinating story of a rogue mercenary terrorist legend.......2003-09-24
In this involving and well-written account, Carr strains to elevate the importance of Ward, a historical footnote, a mercenary of questionable repute and eventual Qing dynasty functionary whose prime contribution was the cobbling together of the use of "superior and modern" Western weapons against backwards sword and spear carrying Taiping rebels. And by Carr's own account, Ward was only partially successful. To thank him for his assistance (which ultimately helped maintain both Western imperial domination of China, the opium trade, and the extension of the corrupt and weak Qing empire), in a relationship of dual purpose, the Manchu Qing regime (not the Chinese people)gave him an official title and a Chinese wife. Carr's pro-Western bias is strong, as is his strange love of the Ward myth, which he does his best to overblow. Carr's sourcing is spotty, and in too many places, he speculates---typically in ways that favor Ward. This book, and indeed the Ward story itself, presents a very enlightening model of how violent rogue mercenaries, terrorists, and intelligence cutouts are used to assist governments in "counter-insurgency" wars throughout history, such as the Phoenix Program.
Early battles in 'war on drugs'.......2003-08-04
This is a bit of a stretch for the conventional Western military history, but an excellent one. Most readers will probably think of General Ward's biography in terms of traditional 19th century nation state narratives. Let me propose a different one, the context is 'opium wars'. The story goal is defeating the merchants of opium, the English. The outcome is bittersweet. This requires the reader to do more 'reading between the lines' than usual, but the rewards are there for those interested.
While the book's focus is Fredrick Ward, a true soldier of fortune, the 'Chinese drug wars' are really more central. The period covered begins with the British winning the 'Opium War'. To make sense of this, imagine Columbian drug lords defeating the US Army and demanding control of an airport in Miami. By treaty right, the Columbian drug lords would we granted the right to fly cocaine to any airport in America. If you can imagine this, substitute Queen Victoria for the Columbian drug lords and Shanghai for Miami.
As should be required, the book begins by discussing hypocrisy. England's Royal navy is primarily in China to help the East India Company sell opium. The 'Christian' leader of the Taiping rebellion preaches puritanical virtues, but surrounds himself with concubines. Our hero emerges from the New England merchant class, a class that simultaneously smuggles slaves to the American slave states and finances abolitionist politics. Unfortunately, the theme is not followed throughout. The final chapter dwells on legal battles over Ward's treasures rather than the continuing twists in the drug wars and associated hypocrisy.
The narrative spends most of its time on Ward's invention, the 'Ever Victorious Army' or 'Ward's Chinese Corps'. As evidence that necessity is the mother of invention, the 'Ever Victorious Army' came into existence through the whim of fortune. Western powers in Shanghai had no desire to see it emerge, since it represented a threat to the British control of the opium trade. The Imperial Chinese were to entrench in tradition to accept the innovation. It was only the existence of a 100,000 man rebel army 30 miles from Shanghai that provided Ward his 'opportunity' to build his vision.
Fredrick Ward remains something of a mystery in his biography. He died in action before we could really tell what he was building. Few of his letters escaped destruction, so we rarely hear his own voice. Instead, Carr is forced to infer from events and news paper accounts. Most readers will have to overcome their skepticism about Ward's career being ample material for a full-fledged biography. In this context, Ward seems the forgotten inventor. Charles 'Chinese' Gordon won the publicity war and his buddies wrote the history books. Gordon 'China' role is limited compared to Ward. Gordon took over Ward's cross-cultural invention, the 'Ever Victorious Army', and won the army's last battle. His job was simply to maintain it long enough to win one battle, and peacefully disband the thing. For this, he gets his own big budget Hollywood movie, Khartoum, staring Charleston Heston. In contrast, Ward invents a modern Chinese Army and provides a working model to interested Japanese observers. Guess who I think more interesting.
A solid read.......2003-02-08
Carr appears to make the most out of the limited resources available on Ward, although he repeatedly reminds readers that almost all of Ward's papers were destroyed.
A good complement to Spence's book, Both are readable.
One shortcoming of the book is that Carr used Wade-Giles for the spelling of all the Chinese names of individuals and places. While this decision is understandable considering that some of the original documents used such spelling, Carr should have included a glossary with the Chinese and/or Pinyin names so that readers familiar with the Chinese and/or Pinyin names could more readily identify whom and what Carr is talking about.
He could have also put some of the sites into a modern context better.Such as that Siccawei is the site of Xujiahui and the cathedral, or that Hung Ch'iao is the site of Hongqiao and one Shanghai's airports. Finally, he missed that there is a Taiping memorial out at Kao Chi'iao (Gaoqiao), the site of one of Ward's battle sites.

Book Description
The march to Baghdad, Iraq in 2003 was a military operation like no other. High tech weapons and old fashioned Marine infantry combined to lead coalition forces to victory in twenty-one days. Returning Son is the story of Private Sean Cassedy, a cyberspace generation warrior, coming from a tiny Kentucky town with the unlikely name of Bagdad. Son is war from the eyes of a grunt as well as the emotional war for loved ones back home. Sean left for Marine boot camp one week to the day after the tragedy of September 11th. He survived boot camp's ultimate test--the Crucible--only to be tested in the crucible of his own court-martial. During Operation Iraqi Freedom both of Sean's legs were crushed in a fog of war accident within a hundred miles of Baghdad. As one of Kentucky's first injured veterans, Sean's homecoming was as inspirational as his father's homecoming from Vietnam was depressing.

The "returning son" shows us that marines & soldiers are not always kids who couldn't do much else, he's an intelligent young man that could have done anything and yet he CHOSE to serve his country. This book will enlighten you about what it feels like to have a family member serving. It's a good read for men, women & teenagers.

It is a book that positively pulls you in to the story and puts you right there. Returning Son involves everyone. Those who have been in the military, or those who know someone in the military. Even those who just have an interest in the war in Iraq. The author gives you insite on what is really going on in boot camp and then in Iraq. The hell, frustration and family ties. It's about TODAY. A book like no other.
3 questions to ask your children are revealed in this book.........2004-10-30
Returning Son is colorfully written and so highly detailed that you are pulled into the Cassedy's lives as if you are part of the family, feeling every emotion. Returning Son teaches us the value of strong family foundations and the importance of interaction with our children as parents. This is a magnificent story about an average American family and their struggles to survive. This is a story about extraordinary parents that ask their children to mold their futures by answering 3 important questions. This is absolutely a 5 star book that should be read by all, especially to find out the 3 questions.

The lives of eight women who crossed romantic paths with Bill Clinton are examined in this innovative look at the former president. Extensive research and firsthand interviews document the intimidation and harassment that these women suffered after falling out of Clintons favor, in the process revealing a disturbing truth about the ideology of the president and his followers.
Customer Reviews:
Little substance here.......2006-08-26
While purportedly written about a group of women who allege atrocious treatment by Bill Clinton, this screed by a fringe journalist from a fringe publisher instead focuses on an indictment of liberalism.
The "facts" for the accusations of felonies against the 42nd president stem from the chiefly uncorroborated accounts of the several women. How could anyone so brutally raped with a mangled lip from a bite as Juanita Brodderick claims not have taken photographs and had a physician collect semen samples? Certainly the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Office in a Republican administration would have listened to her and pursued a criminal investigation if state authorities would not have.
These women could have secured legal representation, even if funded by arch conservatives as was Paul Jones' counsel, to pursue civil damages.
The author's extreme right-wing credentials are clearly demonstrated by her education and experience. If these terrible allegations were true, they would be more powerfully presented by a mainstream journalist.
What's lower than an Amazon rating of one star? One can't give it here.
Written by neither a "liberal" nor "conservative", approaches Clinton from a fresh angle! .......2006-03-29
Candice Jackson breakes away from the typical liberal/conservative wars to give us a fresh view of Bill Clinton, objectively written from the perspective of how ol' Billy impacted on the lives of eight women (no pun intended, so don't even go there).
The book is a combination of the stories of these women, allowing us to know them and their plights with a new level of detail detached from the politics of the day, and political theory, comparing and contrasting the author's libertarian ideals with modern liberalism. It becomes very obvious that in many ways, libertarianism, not conservatism, is the polar opposite of the liberals. Jackson's brand of libertarianism, anyway. That was very thought-provoking, especially considering how she tied it back into the subject at hand to expose the hypocrisy of the left.
Anyway, there's a lot of good information to be found herin, if you've ever wondered about these women that the mass media somehow never found the time to let us get to know (Monica Lewinsky and to some extent Paula Jones notwithstanding). They were a diverse lot, ranging from victims to co-perpetrators. I was particularly interested in the story of Elizabeth Ward Gracen. An actress with her talent would likely have been an A-list star by now had she not run afoul of the Clintons. She apparently fled the country for her own safety.
Recommended.

Are people still buying the lies of the right?.......2005-12-23
I thought Anne Coulter was an opportunistic "journalist," until I became acquainted with this waste of paper. Even the reviewer in the ultra-conservative Little Rock Arkansas Democrat-Gazette calls Candice Jackson an "authorette," a word carefully chosen to represent the revulsion the reviewer obviously feels for faux (Fox?) journalists like this one. Ah, well...At least it'll give the righties something to read during President Hillary Clinton's acceptance speech.
Boring Rehash.......2005-11-22
What a boring rehash of the same old Republican lies. There was absolutely no research done to crank out this piece of, er, nonsense. I'm surprised that Regnery press didn't publish it. The man's been out of office for 5 years and he's still being slimed.
I can remember my grandparents referring to FDR as "that man" rather than speak his name 30 years after his death. I imagine that today's Republicans will be still be smearing the Clintons at least 25 years from now. Successful progressive leaders scare them more than anything else.
