    Book Description

In this fascinating book the author discusses the political story of the first decade of the reign of George III, one of the most controversial figures in modern British history. George III has often been blamed for the loss of Britain’s American colonies in an attempt to restore royal power. Peter D.G. Thomas confirms Namier’s findings that George III was not seeking to advance royal power and throws light on the extent to which a system of party politics existed at the time. Although the structure of British politics revealed by Namier provides the setting for this study, America, India, and Ireland are also considered here as important issues of the time.

3 out of 5 stars Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

      Book Description

When people wonder who the quintessential hockey coach is, only one name comes to mind-Scotty Bowman. As tough and unyielding as the sport itself and as aggressive and strategic as a general at war, Scotty Bowman typifies the no-nonsense attitude necessary for success in today's NHL. In a career rife with controversy, Bowman is often feared but always respected by the legions of players who have toiled under his reign.

Scotty Bowman: A Life in Hockey traces the career of one of hockey's most intriguing characters. Every aspect of Bowman's rollercoaster career is highlighted, from his early playing career through his record-breaking Stanley Cup victories. Following his thrilling time with the Montreal Canadiens, the difficult years with the Buffalo Sabres, and up to the Red Wings' historic first Stanley Cup success since 1955, Douglas Hunter (author of A Breed Apart) chronicles the joyous victories and the disappointing upsets.

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT purchase this book.......2002-06-24

This book was horrible. I can't believe I actually made it through the 100 pages. The author talks WAY too much about the history of the league and some of the teams and not nearly enough about Scotty. In short, it was a terrible waste of time and money.

1 out of 5 stars Just Stop Reading.......1999-10-11

This is one of the worst books I have ever read in my entire life. On top of the author being extremely boring, he can't even get his facts right. There were numerous errors in the book. The most blatant being the author stating that Mike Vernon won the 1989 Conn Smythe award when in fact is was Al MacInnis. Another error I found was in starting goaltending. The book says that Garth Snow started game one of the 1997 Stanley Cup finals, when in fact it was Ron Hextall. If I picked out these simple errors in the book, how can I believe any of the other information in it? The author and publisher should be ashamed of themselves for letting hockey fans read such a book. The author is a disgrace to hockey. Don't waste your time reading this book.

      2 out of 5 stars Reader Beware.......1998-12-10

Those intrigued with the Bowman legend-mystique will not find the answer to the perennial question "What makes Scotty Bowman tick?" here. This is not a biography and Hunter does not set out to entertain. Next to no attention is paid to Bowman's childhood, youth, or even to what drew him to the game in the first place. Rather this book is a straightforward, if somewhat dry, portrait of post-expansion hockey and Bowman's role in it. Its chief strength is its history of the architecture of the franchises in which Bowman has spent his career. Any gleaning the reader may be pick up as to the creation of Bowman's character or the methods of his success are, at best, inferred (although Hunter does put forth a convincing case to dispel the myth that Jean-Guy Talbot ended Bowman's playing career). Plenty of quotes from Bowman's associates are included, both pro and con (Bowman himself declined to be interviewed for this work). Yet for a volume that appears to be well documented, steeped in statistics and numbers, I found at least five immediate errors, not the least of which are the year of Bowman's birth, and the 1989 Conn Smythe Trophy winner (it was Al MacInnis -- a fact easily verified in the NHL record book -- not Mike Vernon, as Hunter surprisingly states.) If I found these errors, how many others will other readers find, and how reliable is the rest of the information?

By the time I flipped through all the pages, then looked at each adorable little project more closely, I knew I had to own the book!!! I got a very good view of many topics related to sports marketing. I would say that Melvin Helitzer gives us a great overview of what a professional needs to know to perform well in the field. It's really great tour to get acquainted with the dream job. The sports world industry deserves professionals to market, communicate and advertise with the flavor Helitzer gives to us readers.

                        4 out of 5 stars excellent read.......2002-08-22

Tis book is applicable inside the classroom and out. I first read it for a business class and then later when I got my first job in public realtions. It really helped me understand and familiarize myself with sports PR and PR in general. If you read only one book about public relations I'd recommend you read Guerrilla PR Wired by Michael Levine, but if you can read two I'd read The Dream Job.

Looking for a new job, I was recommended to this book. Maybe it was a coincidence, but within two weeks of reading the book and following some its sports marketing techniques, I landed a job with a major college sports department. Call me lucky, or smart that I found this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of ten best Business Books in 2000.......2000-08-25

"The Dream Job" is not only a best seller in the United States, it has also been reviewed as "one of the ten best business books in 2000" by Kauppalhti, the largest business daily in Nordic countries. The critique, read avidly by thousands of readers, called the book "fantastic."

                        5 out of 5 stars Best yet!.......2000-06-23

As a professor, I'm always grateful for texts which students not only can afford but hold on to even after the course is completed. The new 3rd edition of "The Dream Job: Sports Publicity, Promotion and Marketing" is just that kind of book. It is comprehensive, filled with hundreds of examples and exhibits and wonderfully humorous. Outside of that, I don't think much of it!

In 1836, the murder of young New York City prostitute Helen Jewett and the ensuing trial of her lover captivated the nation. Jewett (her real name was Dorcas Doyen; Jewett used many pseudonyms during her short life) was an archetypal 1830s model of fallen virtue. A bright, literate girl who worked as a servant for a respected Maine family, Jewett became "disgraced," losing her virginity outside of wedlock, and eventually taking up work as a prostitute in bustling New York City. One of her clients, Richard Robinson, was a young clerk of uncommon literary talent. The two exchanged a long series of letters, often loving and careful, then as quickly as a summer storm, they turned violent and angry. Early on the morning of April 10, 1836, Robinson stabbed Jewett to death in her brothel room and set fire to her bed. Robinson was eventually acquitted of the crime despite an overwhelming amount of evidence that both placed him at the scene and his hand on the murder weapon. The decision was universally reviled, and Robinson became an outcast who eventually exiled himself to Texas.

Cohen ably places this rather ordinary crime within the context of 19th-century urban life and the development of a fledgling tabloid journalism, showing just how people throughout America came to be shocked by a crime that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. The Murder of Helen Jewett is as much about mores and customs as it is about a lost soul. --Tjames Madison

                        Book Description

In 1836, the murder of a young prostitute made headlines in New York City and around the country, inaugurating a sex-and-death sensationalism in news reporting that haunts us today. Patricia Cline Cohen goes behind these first lurid accounts to reconstruct the story of the mysterious victim, Helen Jewett.

From her beginnings as a servant girl in Maine, Helen Jewett refashioned herself, using four successive aliases, into a highly paid courtesan. She invented life stories for herself that helped her build a sympathetic clientele among New York City's elite, and she further captivated her customers through her seductive letters, which mixed elements of traditional feminine demureness with sexual boldness.

But she was to meet her match--and her nemesis--in a youth called Richard Robinson. He was one of an unprecedented number of young men who flooded into America's burgeoning cities in the 1830s to satisfy the new business society's seemingly infinite need for clerks. The son of an established Connecticut family, he was intense, arrogant, and given to posturing. He became Helen Jewett's lover in a tempestuous affair and ten months later was arrested for her murder. He stood trial in a five-day courtroom drama that ended with his acquittal amid the cheers of hundreds of fellow clerks and other spectators.

With no conviction for murder, nor closure of any sort, the case continued to tantalize the public, even though Richard Robinson disappeared from view. Through the Erie Canal, down the Ohio and the Mississippi, and by way of New Orleans, he reached the wilds of Texas and a new life under a new name. Through her meticulous and ingenious research, Patricia Cline Cohen traces his life there and the many twists and turns of the lingering mystery of the murder. Her stunning portrayals of Helen Jewett, Robinson, and their raffish, colorful nineteenth-century world make vivid a frenetic city life and sexual morality whose complexities, contradictions, and concerns resonate with those of our own time.

The Murder of Helen Jewett by Patricia Cline Cohen. was recommended by an academic friend as a true crime effort with historical weight. She couldn't have been more correct about the weight business. The story of the murder of a New York City prostitute in 1836 generally interested me.

I spent hours with Cline's work and, at the outset, felt well rewarded for the time spent. If detail and context were enough to make a great book, this would qualify. Few books that I have read contain as much detail as carefully analyzed as this one. Much of it illustrates the business of newspapers directed at the common person during the 1830s, something that I have a passing interest in, but it was all too much. By the time I had reached Chapter 4 on "The New York Sex Trade," I knew the basic story and most of the key characters in some detail, and I knew Cline's approach would be to analyze, reanalyze and again reanalyze each aspect of the murder so thoroughly that I couldn't stay with the repetition. I skipped to the end, found out what happened with the likely murderer and moved on to another book.

Personally, I'd have liked it more if she had found an editor determined to serve the reader. Close, research-based document analysis makes good academic work, but it loses a reader looking for the true-crime counterpart of P.D. James.

On one level, Professor Cohen's thorough investigation into one of 19th Century New York's most shocking murder cases doesn't tell us much that we don't already know: the society was sexist, accommodating toward the privileged, and hypocritical in its attitude toward sexual behavior (...and nothing has changed much since then). Whenever Ms. Cohen hammers these points home, and she does pretty often, the effect isn't very... well... effective. And the flow of the book suffers a little from this. Two other things hurt the story: one is the long, distracting section on the histories of the Weston and Jewett/Dorcas families in Maine; and the other is the constant need on Ms. Cohen's part to track the lineage of each and every participant in the case. But for the most part, Professor Cohen's telling of the event is engaging, chilling, and compelling. The participants are brought back to life in a way that most historical writers should envy. To me, the most rewarding part of the book was realizing how much the Jacksonian era in New York and America represented a turning point from the colonial to the modern era. This was the dawn of modern journalism and mass media--the pivotal point where newspaper publishers realized that the public wanted more than just shipping and business reports: where publishers realized there was a public at all. And the media circus--a national media circus--which surrounded this case was the first in a long line that goes on to this day. It was also the first time in western history when people no longer lived in the same place they worked, and when the entire apprenticeship culture was being replaced by the more indifferent employer/employee system. All these important factors do figure into the crime. But the most admirable aspect of the book, for me, was that while all this socio/political analysis went on (sometimes at the expense of the pacing) Ms. Cohen never leaves sight of the young girl at the center of it all. Jewett/Dorcas was by no means a pathetic babe-in-the-woods, and the author is very careful to avoid this perception. But Ms. Cohen makes clear that Jewett, like any crime victim, didn't deserve the end she met. And like any other human being, Jewett was worthy of justice.

This book is 409 pages. It should be at least 259 pages shorter.

The author fills the pages with irrelevancies, speculation and thesis-like sociological postulations.

This book is ostensibly about the murder of a prostitute in the 1830's and the trial of the man accused. Why then must we be subjected to several pages on the following topic: the family history of the man who hired Helen Jewitt to work as a servant before she moved to Portland then to Boston then to NYC? If that were not enough in the irrelevant department, we also got some information on this man's grandfather's competitor in the general store business nearly a century before the events in the book. These irrelevant facts added nothing to the book.

Added to this frustration were page upon page of the auhor's speculation about events unknown and motives of people long gone. She gets more out of an undated letter than anyone I ever knew.

Lastly, are the author's often redundant postulations and theorizing about the socialogy of the age. Some would have been helpful, but by the fourth or fifth time the same theory was repeated it was decidedly tiresome.

It is a shame this book was not cut and cut again. The story is a good one and the points the author made were good. It was the presentation and the stretching as if she felt compelled to write 400 page book rather than a short concise one that ruined the experience. You could read the first chapter, then skip @150 pages to the account of the trial and hardly miss a beat.

The book was good for the most part, except for chapters 8-11 where many pages were devoted to introduce new characters. These new characters were heard from again, and many parts of the book were repeated over and over and over and over.
