2 out of 5 stars A Book About Things.......2002-05-01

This book is not for everyone. If you wish to understand, as I did, the politics and economics of the era, you will be disappointed. You will learn more about George's amours and clothing than you ever wanted to know.

5 out of 5 stars Talent and privilege gone to waste.......2002-04-19

George IV has always fascinated me as one of those monarchs who both impress and disgust. He was born George Prince of Wales eldest son of King George III and Queen Charlotte of England. to a world which offered all possible luxury and inherited a country which looked up to its royalty, yet poor george was to die for the most part despised. Mr. Parissien writes a sensitive and readable biography which shows both the causes and results this king's life. Realtionship with his parents were always strained and lacking in complete love or affection. No wonder George was only too eager to enjoy his power as regent when his old father the king was pronounced mad. Geroge's spending habits were phenominal, he would only have the very best no matter what it cost the country. Yet George was respected and loved by those in the arts especially admired by the architects of his time. One only has to look at the enterior of Carlton House or the Brighton Pavillion to realise this man's astetic sense. George's marriage was a disaster and events leading up to his niece Victoria becoming queen was nothing short of a miracle. A true caricature of his own self he gave his name to an era where good taste went hand in hand with infidelity and corruption. A highly readable book with some excellent illustrations.

      Book Description

Tazio Nuvolari (1892-1953) is widely regarded as the greatest racing driver of all time. Through the 1930s and into the 1940s his reputation for skill and bravery eclipsed a whole generation of rivals. Even today his name alone evokes a classic era in the history of road and Grand Prix racing.

In this fascinating assessment of Nuvolari's life, Christopher Hilton seeks to understand Nuvolari the man - and the Nuvolari legend as it unfolded. Using original documentary material, race reports of the time from several countries and the recollections of Nuvolari's contemporaries, the author recreates the excitement generated by his driving and the impact it made on motorsport.

The author captures many aspects of Nuvolari's strong personality, a personality which, in the days before intrusive journalism, was virtually unknown. The extraordinary performances that decorated Nuvolari's long career form the backbone of the narrative - the 1930 Mille Miglia, the 1935 German GP, the 1938 British GP at Donington, the 1948 Mille Miglia.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the essence of Nuvolari.......2007-06-05

Excellent book! Hilton does a great job describing in-depth Tazio's greatest races, namely his Mille Miglia wins, his 1935 German GP win against the mighty German teams, and his last hurrah in the 1948 Mille Miglia when, at 57 years old and spitting blood (he had lung disease and only three years to live), he had a substantial lead with the finish in sight, but his Ferrari literally disintegrated out from under him. Enzo Ferrari himself was so concerned about Tazio's welfare, he reportedly had a frocked priest stand in the road and try to stop him before he killed himself. When Tazio dropped out, he was 29 minutes ahead of the second place car. The second place car eventually won -- 70 miles ahead of the runner-up. Tazio was old, but he hadn't lost his fabulous skills. The book has spectacular black and white photos, some never published before. I recommend you buy this book, and supplement it with Cesare de Agostini's Nuvolari - The Legend Lives On. This book also has many great photos not found in the Hilton book. Together, for around $60, you will have an excellent, comprehensive history of the world's greatest race driver. From what I can see, most of the other books on Tazio are very rare and very expensive. The photos dramatically show how big these Alfas and Auto Unions were -- much longer and heavier than any Indy car. I would guesstimate the wheelbase was at least 110", and they must have weighed at least 3,000 pounds. And there they were, wearing t-shirts and cloth helmets, manhandling these fire-breathing monsters on skinny tires over narrow, bad roads, lined with spectators and trees. Tazio truly raced in a golden era. He stood head and shoulders above his competition.

4 out of 5 stars Nuvolari, A great racer, but I still don't know who he was........2007-02-02

Nuvolari, the legend of the beginning of the 20th century. Who was the man? What was his background? When did he start(motor)racing? When and how did his sons died? How did this affected his life? Whas the man depressive? What was his relationship with Enzo Ferrari? Or with his biggest oponent Varzi? Or with Bernd Rosemeyer and the Auto Union team? Did Nuvolari sympatized with the Fascists of Mussolini? How did he met his wife? etc etc. Thinks I still want to know but after reading Hiltons book stil not have an answer about.

A pity? I think Hilton is an underestimated writer. To ofter I read from his critisizers that he is only able to write cheap biographies about today's formula one drivers. I dont agree and I like his books. And this one is (for an non native English reader) very readable book! And although I critisize his strategy, which is telling about the most important races of Nuvolari and dividing the myth from what the truth migh have been is still very interesting. I do like the book! If it is worth parchasing is difficult to decide. And although I've learnt a lot about his way of racing there are still a lotof thinks i want to know.

I don't stop reading about Nuvolari!

Many pages have been written about the evergreen Tazio Nuvolari and his legend. But until now there has been no book that looks specifically at the final years of the Flying Mantuans victorious and dramatic career. In 1947 and 1948, he was the undisputed king of the Mille Miglia, driving a Cisitalia and a Ferrari. By this time physically and morally tormented by the premature death of his two young sons, the old champion was still able to impose his unquestioned class on two memorable races. This riveting episode in the history of motor racing is told in a book by Mario Donnini, renowned motor racing journalist, who restored to its original splendour the bonnet lost by Nuvolari during the 1948 Mille Miglia after its successful recovery. This important reanimation was the pretext on the basis of which to tell of these epic deeds during those races through a thrilling text, numerous photographs and documents of the period. Book Description

Television directors Arthur Penn, Delbert Mann, Jeffrey Hayden, George Roy Hill, Paul Bogart, Paul Nickell and Ted Post began their careers in New York during the heyday of the live drama shows. It was there that they learned their craft and honed their skills. With the end of the live era in the late 1950s, these directors found themselves working on film. They brought many of the techniques of the live age to their new medium, altering the traditional production methods of Hollywood. Here these seven directors discuss their approaches to working with cast and production personnel, the social and aesthetic issues they first raised in the live television dramas and continued in their film work, and their interaction with critics and viewers.

This product was purposely advertised under edition 11 while it is in actuality a 7th edition. Not only that, it is not even cost accounting but Financial accounting. To make matters worst the seller was not helpful at all and blamed everything on Amazon. I am doing my second masters and therefore not new to Amazon; so blaming such an institution is no justification for an inherent dishonesty. There was no CD package as well and therefore the only thing that matched to the discreption was the authors. Proof of this persons dishonesty is that on Amazon you can buy the same book he sold me at $2 while he sold (cheated) the book to me for $20 something. I strongly advise no one to buy from this person. If there was any lower rating than 1 I would definetly have given him that as rating "1" is too high of a scale for this persona.

I am Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA) - intermediate student. I used this book for my professional qualification paper - Decision Making. This book is useful, but I have some reservations and therefore the rating 3/5. Some of my reservations are:
1.Unlike Drury's, Management and Cost Accounting, this book is almost all formula based. Almost everything is derived through formula and there is very little explanations on why the formula is structured in that way.

                            2. The chapter of Standard Costing and Analysis of Variance is frustrating. The author(s) doesn't cover all the variances under all the categories, namely material, labor, overhead and sales etc..,

                            3. At one point the book asks you to calculate the Break Even point under "Absorption Costing", but there is never a discussion of how to do it. You'll find this information in drury's text.

                            4. The excersise and problem sets are too simple for a professional level student. However the cases are great.

                            The plus points however are:
                            1. Great coverage of emerging practices in the profession
                            2. The companion CD is great source of sharpening your knowledge, and
                            3. The color presentation

Overall, the book rates below Colin Drury's bible book "Management and Cost Accounting". Therefore before spending $150 to buy this book, have a look at the bible book.

                              Book Description

A respected journalist turned-teacher reveals what's really happening in America's schools

In 1999, Chicago Sun-Times veteran Leslie Baldacci left her prestigious, twenty-five year career to teach at a public school in one of Chicago's roughest South Side neighborhoods.

As she later commented, "I thought I knew rough. I thought I had answers. I didn't know jack."

But Baldacci never looked back, and the result is Inside Mrs. B's Classroom, a compelling, first-hand narrative from the trenches of the inner-city school system that addresses one of society's most critical issues from gritty, daily personal experience.

An expert on Chicago's massive education reform efforts even before she turned in her press credentials, Baldacci adds an informed, intellectual layer to this insightful, engaging work. In an era in which many people talk about wanting to make a difference, Baldacci has done so. Here she shares the whole picture, from the unrealistic expectations to the surprises--good and bad--that make up education today. Above all, she shows how an individual can, did--and continues to--make a difference in the lives of American children.

I was looking for books which could help me decide if becoming a teacher was the right path. After reading the challenges that Mrs. B' went through I decided that it will be the right path to take.

More than courage, hope and learning it's to have the guts to make a difference with a teaching career. It's to have the confidence that you can make a difference in a community, a child, a parent but also in you.

Great and easy book to read!!!!

Overall had I known the condition of the book I recieved I would have spent the extra few dollars to get it new and faster delivery time.

5 out of 5 stars What teaching is all about.......2004-11-29

Baldacci was a journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times and served on their editorial board. Among other things, she wrote about the shortcomings of the Chicago Public School system. Then she decided to put her money where her mouth was (quite literally, she took a two-thirds pay cut), signed on for an alternative teacher certification program, and began teaching in an inner-city grade school.

I admit I was skeptical at first. After all, here was someone who'd been telling the schools what to do from her journalist's ivory tower, probably thought she knew it all, and could cut and run back to her well-paying career if teaching went sour. Well, she didn't. She's still teaching.

All those folks who think teachers should be paid according to how test scores improve, who blame the teachers because kids can't read or are uncontrollable, need to read this book. It's been said before, but it needs to be heard.

You try it. Take a class of 36 kids, some of whom are homeless, or live in a home with crack addicts, who don't get enough to eat (except at school). Don't have supplies except what you buy yourself. Have the room be too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Do this in a school where the administration doesn't care about whether kids learn as long as they're quiet. Be downgraded for initiative. Teach to the test. Spend your free time and weekends grading and making lesson plans. Never get what you need until it's too late. Don't forget to learn all the different gang signals, and be sure to duck when there's shooting outside the classroom window. Get paid $24,000. Then talk about it.

It amazes me anyone is still teaching. But then there are folks like Baldacci, and the teacher named Donna who asked her why she took a two-thirds pay cut.

"Because a voice called and I answered," I told her. It was the first time I'd admitted that out loud to anyone outside my family and a few close friends. Although I did not know her well, I felt she would understand. She jerked her head and looked at me in surprise. Then a smile spread across her face.

"My sister," she greeted me, as if meeting me for the first time. "

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books i've read.......2004-08-17

This was by far one of the best books i've read - I absolutely couldn't put it down, which doesn't happen often. I'm currently considering going back to grad school to become a teacher here in Chicago so this book was very enlightening. Whether you're a teacher or not, this book is a great read & has great insight into the inner city schools.

                                  Book Description

The atomic bomb. Rocket-propelled bombs. Jet propulsion. Radar. By failing to develop effective programs for such "secret weapons," Japan increased the probability that it could not triumph over its more advanced enemies. While previous writers have focused primarily on strategic, military, and intelligence factors, Walter Grunden underscores the dramatic scientific and technological disparities that left Japan vulnerable and ultimately led to its defeat in World War II.

Grunden's fascinating analysis of this fundamental flaw in the Japanese war effort seamlessly weaves together science, technology, and military history to provide an entirely unique look at a crucial but understudied aspect of World War II. Comparing the science and weapons programs of all the major combatants, he demonstrates that Japan's failure was nearly inevitable, given its paucity of strategic resources, an inadequate industrial base, the absence of effective centralized management to coordinate research, military hostility toward civilian scientists, and bitter inter-service rivalries. In the end, Japan could not overcome these obstacles and thus failed to make the transition to the kind of "Big Science" it needed to ward off its enemies and dominate the Far East.

In making his case, Grunden provides comprehensive coverage across a range of major weapons systems, including the most persuasive explanation yet developed for Japan's failure to develop nuclear weapons. He also assesses the failure of the Japanese navy to fully appreciate the combat utility of radar, describes the largely impotent "death ray" that remained under development until the last days of the war, and traces the expansion into jet propulsion technology that came too late.

Japan did, however, achieve one inauspicious success by developing biological agents capable of wreaking havoc in America's western cities. Grunden not only illuminates the program and the logic behind its success but also unflinchingly describes our own nation's complicity in the postwar cover-up of that program, raising issues that remain resonant and relevant today.

Drawing extensively upon Japanese as well as English-language sources, Secret Weapons and World War II is written with clarity and insight and a remarkable integration of sources from a diverse array of disciplines. The book makes a unique and significant contribution to the histories of World War II, Japan, science, and technology, chronicling another chapter in the endless pursuit for "ultimate" weapons.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

                                    Book Description

Blessings on Uncle Sam's soldiers! They have done their job well, and every pine tree is waving its arms for joy.--John Muir

Muir's words and this book both celebrate a crucial but largely forgotten episode in our nation's history--the rescue of our national parks by soldiers with an environmental ethic generations ahead of its time. In Nature's Army, Harvey Meyerson chronicles this unexpected but fascinating tale and shows why its impact and relevance still resonate today.

Despite the worldwide renown and popularity of Yosemite National Park, few people know that its first stewards were drawn from the so-called Old Army. From 1890 until the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916, these soldiers proved to be extremely competent and farsighted wilderness managers. Meyerson recaptures the forgotten history of these early environmentalists and shows how their work countered the army's Indian-fighting image and set significant standards for the future oversight of our national parks.

The army, Meyerson suggests, had actually been well prepared to assume this stewardship. During its first hundred years--and despite the interruptions of warfare--its soldiers had crisscrossed the American landscape, preparing maps, and writing detailed reports describing climate, weather, physical terrain, ecosystems, and the diverse flora and fauna populating the lands they explored and often protected during an era of wide open exploitation of natural resources. Such experience made the army better suited than any other federal agency to oversee the early national parks system.

So great was the army's ultimate environmental influence that the National Park Service embraced the army model as its own, right down to the uniforms still worn today. In fact, many of the first civilian rangers were drawn directly from the army, while some of the Sierra Club's most outspoken early members were cavalrymen serving in Yosemite.

Combining environmental, military, political, and cultural history, Meyerson's study is especially timely in light of Yosemite's enormous popularity (four million visitors annually) and recent controversies pitting conservation forces against dam builders and proponents of expanded public access.

This book is part of the Development of Western Resources series.

5 out of 5 stars The Army and American "Nation Building".......2002-03-19

NATURE'S ARMY is a tremendously engaging history of the 19th century United States Army. The book depicts the Army's main activity as "nation building," a concept somewhat discredited in the 2000 presidential election. The local example of "nation building" found its most lasting impact in the protection the Army gave to the newly-developing national park system. In particular, Harvey Meyerson focuses on California's Yosemite Park, set aside in 1890 as a national park. But, any visitor to Yellowstone in Wyoming can still see the Army's presence where the National Park Service maintains many of the original fort facilities at the Park's north entrance headquarters. Meyerson's excellent book should be read by anyone interested in western American history, military history in general, and the development of the American national park system. Highly recommended by this reviewer. Just a thoroughly engaging book.
