An Awsome and Orginal Piece.......2000-02-19
If you love the Tudors, and you already have your basic facts down, you'll really enjoy this orignial look at Henry VIII. Profesor Smith allows a look at Henry VIII as a person, revealing a personality that may have belonged to this great King. Definately worth the read.

Easily the best biography of the mercurial Tudor monarch.......1998-12-27
More than four centuries after his death, Henry VIII remains one of the most fascinating monarchs in English history. As a result, numerous biographies have been written about him - and his equally famous six wives. But only Lacey Baldwin Smith's biography does justice to both subject and reader. He avoids the easy trap of portraying Henry as a misogynistic tyrant who twisted religion and politics in the pursuit of personal gratification. Such a treatment, sadly popular in current biographies, is an insult to any student of history. Instead, Smith brings Henry alive in the context of the turbulent sixteenth-century; he is seen as both man and king, troubled soul and tyrannical monarch. When you have finished this brilliant and learned work, you will have a new and profound understanding of Reformation England - and its contradictory leader.

Baffert offers a frank-and frankly funny-portrayal of his border town roots and rapid rise to the top of the Sport of Kings. A riveting and revealing tale of what it takes to become America's No. 1 trainer.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining; Informative; Well Written.......2007-01-22
Baffert as the self described "ordinary person" with a talent for self effacement becomes a repeating theme in this book. "Whatever Bob accomplished in the end he was just a horse trainer". To see what Baffert accomplished there is a list of Baffert stakes winners in the back of the book going back to 1984 that blow you away. I'm hard to impress but was by this endless list of winners. This astounding success over many years (and one could argue an unmatched record) implies someone particularly good in his field. Or, is he? Dissapointingly, there is very little in "Dirt Road" beyond a smidgeon as to how Baffert actually trains, feeds, shoes, vets, exercises and conducts his horses. There is so little of this in the book you wonder if the fellow ever actually goes to the barn.
Instead this story seems more the boon on hobbknobbing with the wealthy and selling horseracing to susceptible marks, useful talents to be sure, but what does this have to do with training horses? I was unable to escape certain sections of the book in forming opinions on Baffert--his father always under the influence of alcohol, a trait seemingly passed on to the children; social skills evolved as a boy selling door to door his father's eggs, but, never blinking an eye that the money came from chickens imprisoned in tiny cages in the Baffert backyard. Though Baffert professes attachment to a horse or two here or there, treating animals as livestock backgrounds this whole saga. Animals as a means to an end, ignorning basic animal needs while using those animals for their own self-promotion and profit is difficult to ignore in the story of Bob Baffert. We may take our hats off to Baffert's success but his book fails to answer the question whether the success is horse training or salesmanship.
Bob Baffert - The Boy - The Man.......2006-04-24
The BAFFERT book is an easy read and actually gives you a bit of a feel for the man, the horse racing industry (mostly thoroughbred), and its players thru 1999.
It sometimes seems the book is meant to be cathartic, as Bob fairly candidly relates a number of mistakes (as well as good decisions) he has made with horses and clients over the years; still the book helps you to appreciate the little boy personae so evident in the successful man who's central to nearly every major horse racing event today.
Although the book was published in 1999, a number of the people and horse bloodlines are still relevant as I write this review in April 2006.
Not just a bunch of facts and figures.......2004-11-19
Thank goodness the author didn't fill this book with a bunch of useless data...there's plenty of that in most other books on thoroughbred horse racing. My favorite parts were when Mr. Baffert opens up and tells the stories of his misadventures growing up and the adventures of today. Another reviewer complained that the author used the "I" too much, but considering that "BAFFERT" is in the largest type on the dust jacket, I would expect the book to be about him. Please write another book, and fill it with some more humerous stories. I really enjoyed the few you shared with us in this one.
Don't write another book, please.......2002-08-06
Bob should stay to training horses, this book is poorly organized and written on a grade school level. I have never been so annoyed with the writing in a book, he uses "I" constantly. The content is shallow and gives the reader no further insight into the high end racing world.
ordinary guy.......2002-01-25
This book was enjoyable to read. I liked learning about the ordinarily extraordinary life and times of Bob Baffert. It's a book full of experiences and some tips to learn from.
Customer Reviews:
This book even gives tabloid a good name.......2007-07-30
The reason there is no input from the man himself is because he hates this book. For the Harry Potter fans, I think this book levels with the writings of Rita Skeeter. Wikipedia has a better bio than this book.
He does not support this book! Fans don't buy............2007-07-16
Mr. Rickman himself said that he didn't support the book. For people who adore this actor as I do don't buy it!
Save your money.......2007-01-10
Alright Rickmaniacs, I found this book in the seat compartment of a BA flight from LAX to London and let me tell you, now I know why someone left this book behind.
Paton's idea's about Rickman are highly questioned and considering who she used as resources, that does not surprise me.
The style of Paton's writing is Chaotic at best, and was difficult to follow.
If you want to read this book, find a copy to borrow and buy an AR Dvd or CD instead.
If You're a Fan, DON'T!!!!!.......2006-07-17
If you are truly a fan of Alan Rickman's -- or just interested in him as a wonderful actor -- run, don't walk, AWAY from this offensive drivel!
I am not even going to dignify this tripe with a lengthy review...even a NEGATIVE one (and, if you haven't guessed by now, this IS a negative review). If, indeed, the man is to have an unauthorized biography, let it be worthy of him, and not this nonsense.
Maureen's Drivel.......2006-05-12
I picked up this book as I am a great admirer of Alan Rickman's career and was sorely disappointed within the first paragraph. The technique, if that's what the jerky, scattered smattering of unrelated sentences and half formed ideas can be called, resembled nothing close to a decent flow or form. In one sentence the author makes a point blank statement then, in the next, proceeds to contradict it in a way that makes me believe she was oblivious to the first statement.
Not only is her writing style appallingly primitive (and no amount of the thirteen letter words she seemed fond of sprinkling through out the text can hid that fact)but the voice she used to recant this cobbling of rumors and third hand reports bears all the resemblance of a jilted lover.
This mockery was written seemingly without respect for the person but rather as a way to make a profit off of a talented man who prefers to not exploit himself the way this hack seemed to have no qualms in doing.

GURPS works for Traveller!.......2004-03-12
Wow! Finally got round to playing Traveller with the GURPS system last night and I was amazed at what a good fit they make. The attention to detail in GURPS (and in particular combat) really works well with Traveller. The weapons and armour are beautifully realized and the character generation system gives a level of detail and flexibility that sits well with the depth of the Traveller universe. My worry that we would get bogged down in details was groundless. Though the GURPS rules cover pretty much everything, they don't get in the way. And another thing, how nice, how Traveller, to only be using six sided dice!
Just plain wonderful.......2001-01-10
I'm a twenty year traveller veteran - I cut my teeth on classic Traveller, played MegaTraveller so much I probably could have won the rebellion single-handedly ;-) - and enjoyed wandering around the ruins of the Third Imperium, in Traveller : The New Era.
...Let me say straight out that this is a *great* addition to that legacy. Loren Wiseman has done a fantastic job of presenting a background rich in detail that will be accessible to newbies and ancient grognards alike. Set in an "alternate universe" in 1120, where the Imperium never fell, the supplement lovingly brings the feel of classic traveller to the GURPS system.
The book is packed with library data, essays on the Imperium and its worlds, character templates, weapons, equipment - and the second edition even includes a modular starship design system to ease the pain associated with the enormous detail in GURPS vehicles.
So without further ado - I bequeath this supplement ...5 stars. Its well written, beautifully presented and just a joy to own. If you are inquistive about Traveller this is a great book to start with. If you are vaguely serious about Traveller this is a purhase that you just can't do without.
You'll need more than this book..........2001-01-08
to set up a new campaigne or universe. I've been away from gaming for about 15 years and have passed on all my old Traveller stuff. Never having used Gurps before, I thought that the Traveller book would be enough to get going again. I figured it would contain the basic info as found in the first three original Traveller books. Wrong! There's no real info on world creation or space combat or even charactar creation. That's all covered in other GURPS books. By the time I get all the books I think I'll need, I'll be in for $100 or more. The GURPS system takes the narrow yet deep info approach to gaming. Travellar is a good background book if you're already a GURPS player but you need other books if you're new to this. It looks like I'll be getting "Traveller Scouts: First In" for world building and "GURPS Space" for space combat as well as "GURPS Basic Set" and "Compendium II" (charactar creation) . The good thing is that SJGames (publisher of GURPS) has a free GURPS Lite pdf file you can download that gives the basics of GURPS roleplaying. This may let me put off picking up the Basic Set for a while.
Not overly useful.......2000-08-14
As a big fan of Traveller, I was eager to see how Loren Wiseman would adapt the game for GURPS. While I suppose GURPS Traveller is a necessary book to introduce Traveller to GURPS, the book certainly isn't very meaty and doesn't have much in it that you couldn't just glean from purchasing the GURPS main rulebook. The character archtypes are a must but beyond that, they could have distributed the material among GURPS other sourcebooks. I would have rather scene a more detailed history section, akin to those I've come to expect from my Traveller products.
The legacy lives on!.......2000-04-20
Well...as an avid Traveller player, I was very interested inseeing what SJG could do to Traveller. I approached buying the gamewith great apprehension. But, in the end I was throughly satisified.Sure, I beef with the GURPS mechanics, but there is more than enough background info which one can overcome that by possessing another rulebook. If you are a Traveller collector, which owns everything that GDW ever produced for the game...then this game is not for you (you will find too much repetition). But, if you are like most of us with a decent Traveller collection. You will find happy to see everything under one roof, so to speak. In the meantime, lets hope T5 is everything we want!

Customer Reviews:
Very useful.......2007-01-21
Loved this book. So many practical ideas for getting out of debt. Especially her rapid debt repayment plan. I appreciated Mary Hunt's inspirational story for motivation. It's a very useful book!
Very impressed with the tips in this book.......2006-11-17
This is a great primer for those getting started on a path to living debt-free, living on one income, or just trying to be fiscally responsible. Hunt talks about attitudes about money that can be helpful to take on, strategies for thinking about and reducing your debt, and lists a number of weighty cheapskate tips that I found very helpful.
The only odd thing about this book is that it mentions God a number of times and suggests titheing and other activities and attitudes that have to do with God, yet it does not mention God or Christianity anywhere on the front or back cover - I don't know why. I am not a Christian and so I just skipped over these parts, but I would have liked to know that I was reading a book based on Christian beliefs before I bought it, since it wasn't just the odd mention.
Other than that surprise, this is a book I'd recommend to those new to frugality.
Practical guide to gaining control over your finances.......2006-03-27
The tile of this book is somewhat misleading - The Complete Cheapskate is not really about how to be "cheap" or get the best deal on something. In fact, the book's subtitle describes much more accurately what it is really about: "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out, and Break Free from Money Worries Forever!" In short, The Complete Cheapskate is a concise and down-to-earth guide to getting out of debt and getting one's finances in order.
Speaking from her personal experience, Mary Hunt describes the struggle with debt that she had gone through. Even though it was a difficult time for her and her family, she was able to overcome it and learned a lot in the process. Since then, she has dedicated her career to helping people in similar situations overcome their dependence on material things and get their financial lives on track. This book outlines her step-by-step process for getting control over one's finances.
It all begins with developing the right attitude towards money and spending, and being committed to this new financial journey. Then comes the hard part: getting a realistic assessment of your debt situation and begin taking some basic steps to get out of it. After that, Mary tackles subjects ranging from Giving, to Saving, to starting a "Freedom Account" (a powerful concept that, once applied, will help you always be prepared for any unexpected expenses, as well as save for some fun things). She then helps you figure out how to live within your means by using some basic budgeting, and offers a long list of money-saving tips in a separate chapter. Once you have committed to getting out of debt and taking control over your finances, Mary's system is easy to apply. She outlines very specific steps and given gives you examples of worksheets that you can put together (either with Excel or pen and paper), so that it's easy to manage and does not require much time - until after a while, it becomes your second nature. The bottom line is, this system works, provided there is commitment and strong desire to change.
I can speak from personal experience that I have used many of Mary's principles to get a handle on my financial situation. Even though I have both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Finance, I needed some help tackling my spending habits and large amounts of student debt. I began my journey towards financial freedom almost nine months ago, having read Dave Ramsey's book. While I came across Mary's writings only relatively recently, I saw a lot of similarities in the overall approach and philosophy - and I have already taken several of her concepts and tools and incorporated them into my personal financial management process.
The Complete Cheapskate is a short book. The actual content is only 169 pages (including about 35 pages of money-saving ideas); the rest of the book (another 60-some pages) contains some of "The Best of Cheapskate Monthly Articles" and some more money-saving ideas (suggested by readers of Mary's column). I didn't find these additional materials quite as engaging as the rest of her book - mostly because they seem neither complete in themselves nor do they fit with the overall narrative. It seems that they were thrown into the book almost as an afterthought, just to bulk up the content.
Overall, I would recommend reading this book to someone who is struggling with debt and cannot see a clear way out. Even if you've already read other books on the subject, it may just be that this is the one that will make it all "click" for you. I would also recommend it as a useful reading for someone who is not in debt (yet), but who would like to know how to avoid it in the future. It is both a cautionary tale and a user's manual to one's finances, and its common-sense approach can be applied by almost anyone. The best thing is, it's a quick read and can be easily put into practice, even if you just rent it from the library (like I did). This way, you will already be on your way to becoming a "cheapskate". (Sorry, Amazon!)
Very helpful tools.......2006-02-01
I found that this book has very helpful tools to manage money. Some of the ideas aren't applicable to my situation, but overall the ideas were good ones and the samples of the spreadsheets were useful. A lot of it is common knowledge, but it helps you to implement the changes in a way that works for you.
A well-defined plan of action..........2005-08-10
This book provides a well-defined plan of action that is very doable. From her own experience, Ms. Hunt has proven the effectiveness of her plan. It is also nice to see a "how-to" book written by someone that has "walked the walk" before she "talked the talk."
This is the second book of Ms. Hunt's that I have purchased, however, I have discovered that each of her books pretty much contains the same information.

Perry McCarthy decided at the age of 18 that he wanted to reach the top in the world's most expensive sport. This is his autobiography. Foreword by Damon Hill. "Perry McCarthy does for Formula One what Bill Bryson did for travel writing. But beneath the black humor and wisecracks - funny enough to make you laugh out loud in public - lies an inspiring and at times poignant tale of the rarest kind of racer: one who never gave up and was, literally, prepared to die trying" David Tremayne, The Independent on Sunday.

Flat out flat broke.......2007-09-22
Even if you don't remember Perry you have to read this book. After reading Perry's story I became totally selfish and said "I'm glad all that happened because that was one gripping, funny read".
Not only is Perry's story a fascinating insight into the old days of F1, he's a damn good writer and a very funny man. Even if you're not an F1 fan this is a very interesting read.
Fast read of F1 from the non-glamorous side.......2007-04-13
In someways, reading this book you are constantly thinking: no way this can all be true. It would seem that lightning can strike not only twice but multiple times. F1 officially always portrays (especially in current era) a gloss of glamour and flash. You rarely hear the story of one that fights and struggles beyond those that may come up, not perform and fade away. Perry seems to have perfected the art of pulling up from the bootstraps, getting kicked hard and starting all over again. In this book you can see the scramble for sponsorship, the stretch to make ends meet and how it becomes an undying desire. I have had acquaintances whose dream to make it in the NFL eventually lead to the loss of marriage and all else and I can connect with that dream of reaching for the golden ring but falling off the horse instead. This book moves along well but you are always juggling is it true, is he really good or just really crazy. You want the pieces to fit together but fundamentally the dogged determination to keep going provides not only humor but motivation.
Flat Out Laughs.......2007-04-01
Not all racers are as determined to succeed in racing, nor as articulate as Perry McCarthy, and damn few are as funny! This is a great, quick read with a laugh a minute.
Flat out, Flat good!.......2003-09-08
Being an F1 fanatic, I had just finished the great book by Murray Walker. Looking for another ýgoodý book about F1, I found this gem on Amazon. Mad Dog is among other things, a fighter and you have to give him credit; getting into the worlds most expensive sport with no cash is quite a feat.
The book is very well written in a Conversational style that makes you feel like one of the ýrat packý. Like F1, itýs paced at the speed of taking Eau Rouge flat out. After reading this story, you certainly wish you were one of the blokes lined up to give him money. He has a charm and whit that is infectious and translates well in print. I strongly recommend this book. Not to learn about F1, but to learn about Perry. To learn something of risk, gambles and the will to succeed at all costs. The parallel stories of his mates; Hill, Blundell and Herbert are equally entertaining. The overall story of his father, who was foreshadowing Perryýs own career choices and paths, is a welcome angle to this book as well. In short, this book was a total surprise and treat for anyone that just likes good stories of life and struggles in the motor racing world.
To Perry, I say good luck to you sir. You have had a difficult road to travel but what memories it has provided for you, and now me.
A careers worth of "silly season".......2003-04-09
A well written and very funny account of breaking into formula 1.

Book Description
The Civil War fought between Charles I and his Parliament is one of the most momentous conflicts in English history. This book provides a wholly new perspective by revealing the extent to which the struggle possessed an “ethnic” dimension, and the impact of that on the forging of English national identity.
Stoyle reveals the acute fear of foreign invasion that gripped England after 1640, when the insular English were placed on the brink of what they perceived as a national emergency. Stoyle sets the creation of the New Model Army within that context, arguing that its appearance represented the culmination of a campaign by Oliver Cromwell and others to forge a purely “English” military instrument, one purged of the foreign solders who had been so prominent in earlier Parliamentarian armies. This self-consciously “English” army eventually succeeded in wresting back control of the kingdom by defeating the king’s forces, re-conquering Cornwall and Wales, and expelling all foreign agents.

Book Description
In this ambitious book, Moishe Postone undertakes a fundamental reinterpretation of Marx's mature critical theory. He calls into question many of the presuppositions of traditional Marxist analyses and offers new interpretations of Marx's central arguments. These interpretations lead him to a very different analysis of the nature and problems of capitalism and provide the basis for a critique of "actually existing socialism." According to this new interpretation, Marx identifies the central core of the capitalist system with an impersonal form of social domination generated by labor itself and not simply with market mechanisms and private property. Proletarian labor and the industrial production process are characterized as expressions of domination rather than as means of human emancipation. This reformulation relates the form of economic growth and the structure of social labor in modern society to the alienation and domination at the heart of capitalism. It provides the foundation for a critical social theory that is more adequate to late twentieth-century capitalism.
