Though I do certainly agree with the other reviews of this book I still believe it has its virtues in detailing the mighty Prussian army in its organization, in its recruiting and its battles.

The author provides not so flattering insights into the man who headed it, lead it into battle and came pretty close to being the cause of its destruction. Like Napoleon, he must rank as a great tactician but also a Butcher in regards to the men under his command.

An Excellent Overview Ruined by Poor Editing.......2001-02-24

Poor editing, with numerous typos and spelling/syntax errors mars this work. There is excellent detail on the organization, training and equipment of the Prussian army, 1740-86. Good individual chapters on Prussian infantry, cavalry, artillery and support services. Frederick does not appear so "great" here; an able tactician and aggressive soldier-king, but marred by pique and an ignorant perspective. He despised his artillerymen and engineers and consequently, his efforts at siege warfare were failures. While the Prussian infantry and cavalry were superb, he under-utilized artillery and most of his "oblique attacks" were merely cleverly-executed frontal attacks. There is an appendix with unit summaries on all Prussian regiments. This could have been a superb work, but it is marred by inadequate maps, which are difficult to understand and don't depict battles well. Incredibly, there are no campaign maps. Additionally, there should have been a biographical chapter on Prussian leaders, as well as line and block charts on organization and a better campaign summary.

A moderating opinion.......2000-06-04

I agree with the above reader on the issue of typos, but these should not take away from the excellence of Duffy's work on Frederick the Great. The typos aside, this is an excellent and accessible book, which gives a good overview of the Prussian military from 1740-1763 (mainly) without forcing the reader to go through Duffy's more comprehensive biography of the Prussian King if they don't want to.

Typos, typos, and more typos!.......1999-12-15

Owning the first edition of Duffy's work, I could not wait to see the believed-to-be improved second edition. While some new information exists, there are so many typographical errors permeating the text, that the shoddy work by this publisher substantially distracts the reader from Duffy's prose. What's more, the publisher/editor of this second edition omitted from the listing/battle histories one of the Prussian regiments that was detailed in the original edition. Duffy is a fine historian, but it is too bad that the publisher's efforts were not up to the same standards. In conclusion, I will continue to use the original edition in favor of this second edition.

When I originally wrote this book in 1982, I never thought that the year 2000 would see it still in print as one of the very few books that deal centrally with the differences and connections between cinema and TV. I had been teaching film studies, but was increasingly interested in understanding TV. So I tried to apply some of the aesthetic theories derived from 'Screen' magazine and elsewhere to TV. Several of the concepts floated here are still in use today.

'Visible Fictions' was published in the same month as my first TV programme as producer was broadcast: between delivering the manuscript and publication, I had, along with some friends been commissionedto make the first cinema series on the new Channel 4 in Britain. For the next 18 years, I worked as an independent producer making TV documentaries on subjects as various as cinema, food, Hong Kong and religious imagery.

Now I am Professor of Moving Image Studies at the Bourenmouth Media School, Bournemouth University, and have just published SEEING THINGS (I.B.Tauris, London & New York, 2000) which explores the many developments in TV, from the era of scarcity to the era of availabliltiy and beyond, taking in such questions as scheduling and graphics, as well as the nature of the medium once again.

Crossword Treasury #42.......2007-03-11

This crossword Treasury book had more puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty than the numbered book I usually get. The puzzles were all new to me although they are a collection from previous issues. I liked being able to tear out one page at a time and discard it when finished. Louis "Lepke" Buchalter Is Like Other Mobsters.......2007-03-21

I have read several books on the mob and they all have one thing in common. There is no loyalty within the mob. Each mobster will look out for number one whenever the law closes in on them. Louis "Lepke" Buchalter and his comical partner, Jacob "Gurrah" Shapiro managed to gain control of the lucrative garment trade in New York City for their own benefit. When the law began to close in on Lepke he, like others before him and since, began to have witnesses who knew anything about his infamous past, eliminated. After being in hiding for over a year the mob forced Lepke into surrendering to the law. Lepke thought a deal had been made when, in reality, none had been agreed upon. He surrendered to gossip columnist Walter Winchell with F.B.I. chief J. Edgar Hoover in the car behind him. The message to Lepke was surrender or be hit by the mob. Oddly enough, it was a hit on an individual named Joseph Rosen that sent Lepke, along with Louis Capone and "Mendy" Weiss to the electric chair in Sing Sing prison in 1944. This book reinforces my long held belief that there is no loyalty within the mob. The author has done a wonderful job with this book. It will have a place with my other books on crime figures in our infamous past.

I think this is Paul Kavieff's best book thus far... After reading Murder Inc. this book kept the story line going by diving into the background of a huge underworld Brooklyn figure, namely Louis "Lepke" Buchalter. They have an excellent chapter on Murder Inc. which is a very good summation of Turkus' book, and still brings some new things to light. Lepke forced his way into the garment industry and made his stake like no one else before him; then came Murder Inc. Lucky Luciano personally elected Lepke to head the murder department for the mob. With his own personal group of seasoned assassins, there was nothing stopping him. Lepke was untouchable, that is until Dewey showed up, and then the real trouble started.

Lepke was an amazing individual who had all the components to become anything in life. The fact that Lepke was ruling through his superior labor racketeering skills, while everyone else was involved in the usual rackets (prohibition, numbers running, etc.) truly displays the vision this man had. He preferred to stay in the shadows, and never share his time with the likes of "shtarkers" (strong-arm guys who performed the dirty work). He took himself out of the gutter, and situated himself overlooking Central Park. He ruled with an iron hand and every one paid tribute!

He and his partner, Gurrah Shapiro were millionaires in the early thirties. They had their hands in legitimate businesses and many other rackets including: the garment industry, the motion picture union, the taxi racket, the restaurant racket acquired from the Dutchman and much more. The money coming in was boundless. They literally had a monopoly on a few different industries. "The Gorilla Boys" were like the "Underworld Rockefellers!". This book was a quick read and really ironed out all the details in a very smooth manner. I hope to find a few more books with the same straightforward, and clear-cut precision that Mr. Kavieff has accomplished here.

Great Biography of a Pioneering Mob Boss.......2006-03-08

Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, the Godfather of American labor racketeering, emerges from the shadow of "Murder, Inc." in this great biography by Paul Kavieff. Brisk, well written, and entertaining, it's also accurate and splendidly documented. Lepke was one of the founding fathers of organized crime, who quietly built a massive empire based on labor rackets and narcotics while others dominated the headlines with booze wars, losing it suddenly in an eruption of paranoia and violence while on the lam. This is Kavieff's best book yet, following "The Purple Gang" and "The Violent Years", and makes his transition of interest from the Detroit to New York underworld seem unusually smooth.

Simplistic book with unlikely Plot..........2001-08-27

I find it hard to believe this book is not mostly fiction..it was readable..but to say that it is a true story is beyond any wild belief.The "plot" to kidnap Jefferson Davis was at best a ill conceived "dream" of the French characters of this book. Indeed if they had a true intent to kidnap the Confederate President,they would have had several back-up plans in the event all the pieces of the original plan did not fall into place. It turns out to be little more than a story of what the Confederates believed to be neutral frenchmen, traveling from Washington City to Richmond, on a lark. The story is full of the Frenchmen's value of self-worth and the feeling that the Confederates were ignorant fools that had no place in the civilized world. The trio fashion themselves as The Three Musketeers. The originals of Dumas have little to fear from these three. This book was hardly worth the read...and I do not say that about many books. It is however a short book and that is a blessing. I decided to give it another try as a evening read after having read and reviewed it five years earlier. The basics of my review stand.

A very interesting book.......2000-01-20

This book is very interesting, and an easy book to read for those who do not know much about the Civil War. It tells the story that very few people know about three brave frenchmen and their plot to capture the president of the confederates, Jefferson Davis.. Including the adventures they have a few weeks before and after their plot. I would recommend this book for anyone, especially those interested in Civial War History. This book was hard to put down.

I am definately not "into" Civial War history, but I found this to be a great book. I would make the same decision in buying it again.

A book that helped me understand Amercia .......2007-08-25

I loved this book, for a start the narrative is wonderful. Rose Wilder Lane is a beautiful writer, very different to modern scholars who love to check, reference and double check every fact to the point of tedium. She simply takes her ideas and goes with the flow, they bristle with energy and she is a wonderfully exciting lady who comes across as a clever friend discussing the world and its woes. Sometimes it is frustrating as you wonder how she came upon them but the overall literary experience makes up for it. She has a clear view of how she sees different people in history, the Ancient Hebrews, the Muslims and Americans that makes an intuitive sense even though its not completely backed up. I particularly enjoyed her views of the break away from paganism. Her concept of paganism being a slavish religion where people belief that outside forces control their actions was illuminating. Before Islam, Meccans worshipped many gods who they thought controlled their actions. Mohammed said there was only one god, Allah the creator and after humans were created they were on their own. She understands how pagan gods were tied up to state machinery and how modern state machinery can create viewpoints that she dubs as pagan. It's a fascinating viewpoint.
I also enjoyed her insights into how America had changed over her lifetime. Many Europeans don't understand how free America was in the 19th century, we have never experienced that sort of minimal government. Thus the concept of conservatism is different in Europe it is tied up with conserving rotten regimes that she described yet in America it is allied with the freedom of past era. I appreciated her instinctive rejection of the changes made in her society and respected her for them, especially when she talked of the form of education that was voluntary and localy organized of which she herslef is an excellent advert for. She's a story teller rather than a formal philosopher, her work (as is her Mother's) is almost biblical in the way that every word is steeped in her beliefs and positive outlook, she is instinctively moral yet she never needs to moralize as she expresses herself so well without the need to lecture and drone. I only wished she had written more, I have a book of her letters where she refers to a new book that she is working on but it never materialized. I just love Rose Wilder Lane, she makes me feel more alive.

Social Studies Primer In One Small Volume.......2005-06-10

Forget high school government and econ classes. Forget American history and psychology. All you need to do is read this short, exquisite work.

Ms. Lane crafted an excellent premise that cannot be over-emphasized or repeated too often: Man succeeds when free. Using history, economics, philosophy, religion, psychology, and sociology, Ms. Lane coherently explains recorded human history and gives it a logical framework for understanding. The stories read like a novel, rather than a textbook. Her prose is succinct, precise and very effective. Her first chapter should be memorized and recited in grade schools throughout this land.

Buy a copy for your favorite student as a graduation present. Give one to your congressman, store clerk, or a total stranger on the bus. Leave it at the Starbuck's or the State License Bureau. This is the finest piece of non-fiction I have ever read. Do yourself a favor and read it at least once a year.

A High School and College MUST READ .......2005-02-05

No wonder the publishers in 1943 did not push this book! It is filled with truth about Freedom and very educational. Not at all what anyone who likes to control people would want you to know about. What is Freedom, what are people operating with instead. What a great book. I am sorry no one ever had me read this book years ago. Such an uplifting style of writing. In this day and age, our Liberty and Freedom is slowly being taken away because we don't know what freedom is. This book explains it simply and with great examples. Thanks Rose Wilder Lane...
