Peter Heyrman has the wit of Mark Twain and the style of Hemingway and Faulkner. In "Hobson's Choice" he creates a story that very few could put together. It is a "fictional history" with a lot more truth than I think Heyrman is willing to admit. (Although Heyrman does say, "It is in fiction that one finds the deepest truth." ) I'd have to agree. He brings us back in time to the old south, to the period of the reconstruction through the the eyes of a flamboyant character, Arthur Fairly Hobson. If you want to be brought back in time and just escape, this is the book. The writing doesn't get any better and the stories really show something about the history and human nature of all of us. Hobson's Choice a is GREAT read.

Peter Heyrman's Arthur Fairly Hobson is a man who never was. And yet in Hobson the reader finds a paradigmatic American intellectual: difficult to decipher or know other than in passing, charming to those he meets--both men and women alike-- and yet simultaneously hollow and enigmatic to those who flock to his side.

The fact that Hobson is a fiction does not matter: this "biography" reminds one of the loneliness of history and of the many great men who have faded into obscurity.

Hobson's Choice is to some extent a metafictional commentary on or homage to the styles of great American writers as well. When exploring Hobson's childhood in the deep South, one can hear the strains of Sherwood Anderson in one chapter and Faulkner-esque rhythms in another. The style seems to follow the time, the place, and the events.

Ultimately, Hobson's story is the American story: what passes for power may be mere circumstance, what passes for beauty may be mere vanity. All the time the reader traces the events of Hobson's life-- the real Hobson remains elusive. Hobson is neither admirable nor despicable: it is impossible to know Hobson well enough to feel either about the man himself: the book in that sense is more about those who revolve around Hobson than about the man.

Ultimately, Hobson's secret is revealed, and along with that secret, Heyrman reveals a parable for the American fascination with political might and mythmaking. Yet it is not a political novel: there is little expression of political philosophy and no moralizing commentary on public policy. It is a book about humanity, which is drawn toward power as moths to a flame.

This is a good book for those who like biography or character sketches generally, or for those who are interested in the history of the times from the Reconstruction through the depression (Although Hobson is a fiction, his life in politics is set amidst very real events). More than anything, it is a good book for those who admire a thoughtful and well written novel with myriad levels of metaphor and nuance.

                Working the Room provides great guidance for speakers who want to improve their persuasiveness. In fact, it's the best book on that subject I've ever read. (And I've read quite a few.)

                The title of this book, Working the Room, misled me at first. The book seemed to be about the art of making your way through a room full of people -- shaking hands, chatting briefly, greeting people you know, networking.

                But that's not what it is about at all. Working the Room instead focuses only on speaking. Large groups or small, the principles discussed will help anyone who has to talk to others.

                Two things make this book stand out -- examples and suggestions. The examples, from some of history's greatest speeches to more mundane stories, tell the tale very powerfully. And the suggestions, all drawn from Nick Morgan's experience, have helped me in my speaking and persuading efforts.

                Wow! Nick Morgan hit the nail on the head with this book on "Audience-Centered Speaking." The book came highly recommended by some very credible and talented public speakers and it delivered as promised. The author states that the only reason to give a speech is to change the world by moving the audience to take action. He starts off with the history of speech, going all the way back to Ancient Greece and brings us through time to modern communication mediums (radio and television), which have permanently and profoundly changed our expectations of public speakers.
                He also brings to light several truths about public speaking: most people hate doing it and most don't do it well. So, why then, do we give speeches? He says we do so because speeches are still the most powerful way of connecting with an audience. The author presents us with a process geared toward capturing the audience and engaging them: focusing on content development, rehearsal and delivery.
                Whether a novice or season veteran, delivering a speech to 5 people or 500, anyone can learn how to put together a speech that will change the world.

                The author introduces the idea of developing a kinesthetic connection with the audience by using opportunities for making intellectual, emotional, and even physical contact. The book provides specific strategies to help presenters prepare, rehearse, and master the art of giving speeches that challenge thinking and spark action. STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW finds this a stimulating, insightful and valuable work.

                Finally, a truly great book concerning the art/craft of public speaking. If you heard advice like "picture the audience in their underwear", then you owe it to yourself to read "Working the Room". In this insightful and eminently useful text, Nick Morgan explodes the myths of bad speech-making and crafts a better mousetrap.

                Morgan's central theme is that the the only reason to give a speeach is to "change the world". According to the author, a speech is not a collection of information rather it is a forum to showcase the unique passion of the speaker to sway hearts and minds in the audience. Morgan takes the reader through a thorough process of crafting a speech, rehearsing it, and rendering it to an audience in an entirely new and effective way. I guarantee that you will never think of giving a presentation the same way again. Hint: It has nothing to do with the quality of your PowerPoint.

                Morgan's style is first rate. Filled with useful insights and stories, the book is lazer precise, witty, and absolutely right on time. No fuzzy thinking here. Just solid advice from a unique perspective. It's also an excellent length. It isn't too short and at the end, like many great reads, it leaves you wanting more!

                If you are a person who presents on a regular basis or even if you are a neophyte looking to hone your speaking skills, there is only one book to buy and that's "Working the Room."

                Few of us will ever undertake this arduous spiritual journey to one of the world's most remote sites, but reading this book is the next best thing. The dialectic between intrepid students and wise dharma master is unique and often profound. Tad Wise's narrative of the journey and occasional skeptical asides blends well with Thurman's lessons on the essence of Tantric Buddhism. Especially poignant was Thurman's metaphor of motherly love as a device for linking us all together through an empathic heart. Recommended for all open-minded spiritual seekers.

                3 out of 5 stars Interesting for the Right and Wrong Reasons.......2005-05-30

                This is a spiritual travelogue in which Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman and his backsliding sidekick Tad Wise lead a group of pilgrims to circumambulate Tibet's sacred Mount Kailish, believed by Tibetans to be the Home of the Gods and the Center of the World.

                As a travelogue and introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, it works pretty well, with the narrative shifting back and forth between the scholarly pontifications of the hyper-serious Thurman and the more laid-back reflections of the slacker Wise. Whereas Thurman sees the journey as a spiritual quest, Wise tends to look upon it more as an adventure.

                As the book progressed, I became intrigued how an educated Westerner like Thurman could so thoroughly immerse himself in an alien worldview such as that of Tibetan Buddhism. Here is a man who has no doubt dissected (and rejected) Christianity from a standpoint of strict rationalism, but who then does an about face and accepts an alien religion thoroughly steeped in a complex psycho-spiritual mythology. Thus we find the crusty old Thurman performing in all seriousnes acts which would strike some as rank superstition, e.g., performing a complex fire ritual to an assortment of Buddhist and Vedic deities, circumambulating the "Great Freedom Pole," and prostrating on the shores of the "holy" Lake Manasarovar.

                This I found this book interesting both for the "right" reasons - as an introduction to Tibetan Buddhist beliefs and practices - and for the "wrong" reasons, i.e., my musings about the psychological quirks which draw some educated Westerners to Buddhism. Perhaps, as Rudyard Kiping once wrote, it's simply a yearning for a spirituality shorn of the negative associations of childhood, guilt, and repression: "Ship me somewhere east of Suez, where the best is like the worst, where there ain't no Ten Commandments, an' a man can raise a thirst."

                4 out of 5 stars Armchair Travel and Tantra.......2004-12-07

                If Tantra is the union of opposites, this book works pretty well. Tad Wise seems likeable enough, except for the fact that he has 3 kids by 3 Moms, and leaves Mom #3 behind with a newborn to go off on this spiritual adventure. So I'm rooting for him to get it right this time and go home and help with the laundry. And Robert Thurman seems to use Tad as a whipping boy, teasing and taunting him, which doesn't make Thurman exactly shine in my eyes either. The other members of the trek are more or less invisible, though they are mentioned from time to time.

                The mountain captures my attention starting from the picture on the cover. It looks extraordinary. I love Tibet, and this is deepest darkest Tibet for sure. The monasteries have all been trashed and recently rebuilt to attract tourists for China's benefit. Young Tibetans are as likely to smoke and play pool as they are to chant mantras. So all the tragedy of Tibet are here to see.

                The dharma presented here is very Tibetan. Yamantaka, the fierce deity of death is invoked to stomp on and anhiliate one's self-obsession (the false self). The teaching is called the Blade Wheel of the Mind, and it is meant to work like a buzz-saw, turning all that is self-oriented into dust and all negative experiences into potential gold. To be there, exhausted and suffering from the high elevation, and to listen to these teachings, would probably be an extraordinary retreat experience. I don't know that it is particularly effective in absentia. Thurman does come off as a gas-bag. Maybe it was very unselfish of him, also worn out from trekking all day, to sit down and teach. Or maybe it was just pedantic of him. His close friendship with the Dalai Lama is name-dropped several times. I suppose it's relevant, but it also does not really endear him to me.

                Since I will in all likelihood never even get to Tibet, much less to this remote corner, I enjoyed the vicarious trek. But I'm just as glad I wasn't part of this particular group of trekkers.

                This book was an exhilarating reading experience. With Tad Wise's descriptions of the scenery and Robert Thurman's vivid teachings, I felt as if I was there with them learning and experiencing everything. Their journey was long and storied and well presented. Seeing the experience from two sides, the teacher (Thurman) and the student (Wise) give a wide view of this country and its religion. Wise's antidotes add the human side to the experience. It shows how even you can achieve these great things. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates journeys, religion, or even just a good true story. Thurman and Wise's account make the trek memorable.

                As the last reviewer noted, this book is about more than just the Civil War. As Brian Holden Reid states in the introduction, his goal is to place the Civil War in context with two other major conflicts of the mid-19th century, the Crimean War and the wars of German unification. Contrary to many traditional accounts of the warfare of the era, he sees the three as reflecting the evolution of large-scale industrialized warfare during those decades, with the different struggles nevertheless demonstrating commonalities in the impact of new technologies and the changing scale of war.

                This is evident beginning with the Crimean War. Fought in the shadow of the Napoleonic wars (the British commander had been Wellington's secretary), Reid nonetheless demonstrates, in a very British-centric account, that the expedition to the Crimea would have been impossible without the steam-powered ships which sustained the forces. Yet while he challenges the notion of the British military as being "a museum piece", he does note that the reforms introduced hardly addressed the challenges of the new warfare that commanders like Lord Raglan faced.

                Similar limitations emerged at the command level during the Civil War. Reid's analysis of the conflict dominates the book, taking up three of its five chapters. His analysis if primarily operational and strategic, and it reveals how unready - and in many cases, unadaptable - commanders on both sides were to the new scale of warfare. Grant emerges as the dominant commander, Reid argues, not because of his ability as a field commander (which he sees as inferior to Lee's), but because of his grasp of "what was important in the higher level of the conduct of war." In this Reid ranks Grant with Helmuth von Moltke as the first masters of industrialized warfare, as the Prussian general demonstrated similar attributes in his successful pursuit of victory against Denmark (which is only briefly addressed), Austria, and France.

                All of this Reid presents with a generous seasoning of his sharp observations which leave little doubt as to his opinion on matters (his assessment of the staff of Austrian general Ludwig Benedek is that they "made for an entertaining dining club" is one of the more amusing among many) and make for a lively text. By comparing the three wars, he demonstrates clearly how industrialization transformed warfare, while his operational narrative shows how slowly commanders adapted to these changes. Heavily illustrated with photographs and maps, it is a quick read, and serves as an excellent introduction to the Civil War while putting it in the context of the evolution of modern warfare.

                4 out of 5 stars Actually a work about Modern Industrial Wars.......2000-06-20

                Though the American Civil War is given top billing and forms the bulk of the book, it is one of three conflicts. First is discussed the Crimean War, which shows how little military science had advanced from the end of the Napoleonic era to 1854. The American Civil war is discussed in an admirable and brief fashion - important political concerns, emancipation proclomation, election of 1864, etc. are all mentionned. The power of the rifled musket, the defensive protection of field works, and the advantage of the tactical defensive are all noted. Land strategy is primarily emphasized, and the iron clad is mentionned only in passing. Yet it would be the grandfather of the great naval arm races to come. Civil War buffs will want more depth or be aware of topics skimmed over.

                Holden Reid gives proper credit to the amateur Americans in waging the first large scale continental wars using modern technology. While Napoleon and Caesar commanded large armies over vast distances, until the Industrial Revolution, it was not possible to arm, train, mass, supply, maneuver, and to communicate simultaneously with hundreds of thousands of soldiers, all moving under one strategic plan. He notes that while Grant and Moltke were inferior battelfield commanders to Lee, Moltke was the first to have the leeway of combining peace time preparation with actual war time plans. Grant is given more credit to his logistical planning.

                A well produced book with good illustrations, maps, and pictures. Particularly for the American reader, it offers a brief but well written discussion of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.

                In brief: a good survey of the first "modern wars." Fans of the American Civil War will find dedicated works to be of more interest. For those interested in development of military thought and practice the contrast of the Crimean War, ACW, and the German Wars of Unification in one volume will be fascinating reading.

                  This book is a series of essays about changes in American values during the mid-nineteenth century that resulted from the Industrial Revolution and American Civil War-their impact on the American Dream. Dreams are subject to interpretation; they may mean different things to one than to another. The American Dream is no exception. How many times have you heard the expression? "It all depends on how you look at things." Over the past two centuries there has been more change in the way mankind lives than in the preceding two thousand years. Between 1776 and 1840 the United States more than doubled in area, population and production. The Industrial Revolution created new attitudes about our political and social structure. Americans became obsessed with the concept of more-faster-cheaper. The steam engine freed the textile mills of the North from their dependence on power from "the old mill stream." The cotton gin made large-scale production of short staple cotton profitable in the South. The steam locomotive and steamship revolutionized transportation of people, goods and services. The telegraph provided almost instant communication over long distances. The first European settlers of North America came in search of opportunity and/or freedom. Have we remained a nation of immigrants seeking these values? The Declaration of Independence states " . . . all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men . . ." Does this historical statement of the role of government mean to us today what it meant to citizens in 1776? Is the role of government to regulate conflicts between individual freedom and social order? The word "Democracy" does not appear in either our Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Has our Representative Government become a Democracy? If so, when? A New Birth of Freedom? suggests answers. At the time the Declaration was written, "men" in the phrase "all men are created equal" meant white, male, Europeans. Ever since the early 19th century Eastern, Southern, and Western sections interpreted "unalienable rights" differently. Each section considered those holding different concepts of these "rights" to be "wrong." By 1860 the conflicting concepts of the Dream resulted in armed conflict over the nature of our national development. This Northern "Civil War" or Southern "War between the States" changed forever the future of Americans and their concept of the Dream. By the end of the Civil War/Reconstruction period (about 1880-90) the American Dream had been transformed. The war "to preserve the Union" had changed the American economy. Agricultural products, banking and commercial enterprises became national in scope. The goal "to preserve the Union" was achieved. However, the Union that was "preserved" differed from that of prewar America. It had been radically changed by the War and the concurrent Industrial Revolution. Americans still talked as "Easterners." "Southerners" or "Westerners." (They still do today.) However they organized as farmers, miners, manufacturers or commercial carriers regardless of their sectional orientation. The word "National" or "American" precedes farm, labor, and manufacturing organizations. An unexpected result of the war was the creation of a new world power, the United States of America. England, France and Russia sought our friendship and assistance in their European conflicts. During the 20th century the United States became the most powerful nation in the world-only to encounter new challenges to the American Dream as a world -wide economy evolves today. * * * The book is written for the general reader but should also help foreign students in Colleges and Universities understand the contradictions between American's "belief" and practice.

                    John Finnis's latest book is not really about Aquinas. It is, rather, an attempt to supply a Thomistic pedigree for the 'New Natural Law Theory' developed by Finnis in his earlier books and articles. This is the upshot of recent reviews in THE THOMIST (April 2001 issue) and The American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly (Winter 2001 issue). If you are interested in the thought of John Finnis, this book may interest you. If you want to understand Aquinas, look elsewhere.

                    Finnis has created a major contribution to Thomistic scholarship with this work. The critical discussion of Aquinas's justification of the death penalty is especially enlightening. This work is a necessity for all philosophers and theologians who are serious about learning the theory of this great philosopher, Aquinas.
