Book Description
Shooting from the Outside is a story of triumph on many levels. Woven through VanDerveer's account of the team's pressure-packed year is the profoundly inspiring story of her own rise as a coach. Like women in business, medicine, and other demanding professions, VanDerveer had to forge her own way with little direction or support. Having come of age before the Title IX ruling that prohibited sex discrimination in sports, the closest she could get to a basketball team in junior high was in a bear costume as the mascot. From her early days as an aspiring player to her first unpaid coaching job to her current position at the top of her field, her story encompasses the unfolding 25-year saga of women in team sports.
Customer Reviews:
Great insight into women's game and top coach.......2005-04-30
This is a fun and easy read for any fan of the women's game, centered around the pivotal 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning team, which in many ways marked a turning point in establishing the foundation upon which the modern game is built.
But not only does this book offer a wonderful historical perspective, and some great stories and inside anecdotes on many top players past and present, it also provides insight into the mind of one of the college game's top coaches.
Even for those close to Stanford basketball, Tara Vanderveer is a very private inividual. That's why I found this book especially helpful in providing a better understanding of her personal history, philosophy toward the game, how she feels it should be played, and how that all filters down to the teams she puts on the floor today.
Because Tara is often softspoken in public and not one to actively seek the limelight or TV cameras like some of the other big names in her profession, there may be a tendency by some to think she is more of a hands-off coach. And despite the occasional glare from the sideline, a calm and quiet presence. Nothing could be further from the truth. This book does a good job of uncovering the intensity that boils deep inside and her unbending desire to win.
Shooting from the Outside.......2001-12-12
Tara Vanderveer is the author of the inspiring autobiography Shooting form the Outside. In this autobiography, Tara Vanderveer discusses the challenges and obstacles that she must overcome into to reach her goal of winning the gold medal. The autobiography discusses the hardships, conflicts, and problems that the team faces throughout the year and shows how teamwork can overcome anything.
This novel is pretty much an overview of the Women's Basketball team throughout their Olympic season. The novel starts out with Tara Vanderveer talking about her child hood days and how she developed a love for the game. She talks about how she use to be a mascot for the school, used to write down every new play she heard in a notebook, and how she went and watched the men's basketball team to learn any new play on offense or defense she could pick up. The story then proceeds to Coach Vanderveer discussing her thoughts and concerns for the year that lay ahead of the eleven woman that have been selected as the national team. She talks about her past failures like the 1994 World Games that have pushed her and motivated her to win the gold medal. She promised that the embarrassment and disgrace that she felt from the World Games will never happen again. One can easily feel the strong determination and motivation that Coach Vanderveer feels, and how she uses this as an ally and works the team harder than they have ever been worked before.
This book was undoubtedly worth reading from my point of view. This book taught me information about Title IX that I had previously never even heard about. The book showed me the true struggle that a woman must face and has taught me a sense of respect for woman who have succeeded in the past.
One issue the book brings up is that woman are not given enough opportunity to succeed in life. A woman's determination and motivation can easily be destroyed or brought down by the cruelness and unfairness of discrimination towards woman. Therefore, since woman can do all jobs just as productively as men, the book suggests that woman should be given fair and equal treatment and equal opportunities to men.
In conclusion, Shooting from the Outside is an excellent book that teachers lessons and values that should be known and followed by all of society. The story teachers discrimination is pointless and by not allowing woman to perform to their full capacity we are truly ruining our own opportunities to further succeed in life.
Inspirational For Any Female Athlete.......2001-04-07
This is a really inspirational book for those who care about womens' basketball. I had a really hard time putting it down. You feel as if you are part of the U.S. Olympic Team, and were there to witness the trials and tribulations of their road to Gold. Great book for those who play basketball or enjoy it. (Especially if you're female!!) I think I will start reading the book from the beginning again tomorrow. It also meant more to me then maybe someone else because I have been to Tara's Camps and been able to interact with Jennifer Azzi and Katy Steding, and other players as well. It is totally my favorite book ever!
An interesting insider view of high-stakes basketball.......1999-07-29
I confess that I have been a fan of Tara Vanderveer for nearly 10 years. I think I understand that basketball is a very major part of her life. She likes Bob Knight, sheesh. This book was a very easy read even though you already know how it will end. When you finish the book you might feel like you want to see if the players saw everything the same way. Well, this is her point of view.
Really fascinating!.......1998-06-16
I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth view of Tara's work with the Women's National (Olympic) team of 1996. The team was a masterpiece, and being able to see it thru the eyes of its coach was really something special. It gave me great insight into Tara and her drive and dedication to the sport and to the team. A great book!!

Completely unreadable.......2002-06-18
I admit it. I didn't-no, wait, couldn't finish it. Rare is the book that can bore me so much as to have to quit after the second chapter. One of the worst books I've ever tried to read. Julia, we thank you for Close Encounters, but use your pen to write those checks to the IRS, and nothing more. Total trash, dish about the vain eccentricities of people you couldn't give a rat's posterior about, all in Phillips' wish-I-could be-a-female-Tom Wolfe/Jack Kerouac/Tom Robbins style. Suspect conclusions on reality abound, just awful, inconsequential, unclever observations on larger life, obviously due to the fact that she lives in Hollywood, where for better or worse, nothing is real.
The trees...the trees that died that this should live.......2002-01-04
I've read worse- wait. What am I saying. JUST WHAT AM I SAYING?!
Good Title.......2000-07-19
The title is the only thing I found in this book that was worth reading. I couldn't finish it.
Julia Phillips rages against middle age........1999-07-09
We know why she wrote the book, to pay the IRS, but we love the con. Julia Phillips rages against turning older (and feeling it) and wiser (but, not profiting from it). The book starts, stops, rambles, attacks, gloats, whines. At times we want her to shut up; at others, we want more. Overall, a frank, if self-serving, slice of modern life.
Yeah, but it's entertaining.......1997-05-06
It helps to have grown up or lived a while in the
L.A. basin. Julia's plastic, frenetic, nearly
spastic writing style matches perfectly the stop &
go traffic, the lurch of beautiful people through
club after club, and the sparkly-tacky TV
background that's inescapable there.
Yeah, and I'm a Financial Fuck-up (Hiiiii, Steeve)
and I appreciated the insistent mantra, "Yo tengo
un tax problema." Of course Julia Phillips writes
as a self-centered and self-righteous woman in
L.A. Of course the book begs the question,
"Why don't you just *leave*?" Get over it. It's
fun. It's L.A. It's not *supposed* to have
meaning -- it just is.

Aaaah Julia.......2001-10-30
I found this book at 'The Dollar Tree',and quickly laid down a buck for it.I found the author egotistical, meanspirited, selfcentered, and never the blame for anything. She only saw the bad in people ,and was quick to find everbody's flaws and/or weaknessess. Her gay stereo/arch types bothered me as an attempt to either control or condemn people.
I wanted to do her right away.

Book Description
Marketing: Principles and Perspectives, 4e is a cutting edge text. In the first edition, we demonstrated this leading coverage with our strong integration of Integrated Marketing Communication and Direct Marketing. In the second edition we continued our modern coverage by integrating cross-functional teams, customer loyalty, and the Internet / technology. The third edition includes an Internet Marketing chapter and continues to fully integrate the Internet throughout. The authors not only talk about what marketing is, but prepare the students to be marketers by involving them in interactive exercises which strengthen decision making skills. Marketing, 4e offers the latest coverage, quality professor supplements, and an interactive student web tool and still it is approximately $20 less than most principles of marketing competitors. The perspectives approach is present in the fourth edition, however, the over-riding theme concentrates on building customer equity.

Book Description
Iconoclastic, generous, inventive, impulsive, sensitive, gregarious, prodigious: these are just some of the words to describe Robert Rauschenberg and the art he has been making now for 50 years. From the age of 38, when he received the grand prize at the Venice Biennale in 1964, Rauschenberg has been a pivotal figure in the art of our time. This revised edition of the classic biography of the artist, first published in 1994, adds 36 new pages to cover the significant moments in the last ten years of his career, including his monumental career retrospective at the Guggenheim in 1997.
With 230 illustrations, 112 in full color, Rauschenberg: Art and Life is a richly impressive and highly readable portrait of the artist. Showing the astonishing dexterity and range of Rauschenberg's art even as an emerging artist; the creation of his now famous combines; his eagerness to bridge art and technology; and the establishment of ROCI (Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange), this is a book, as one reviewer put it, "to grab from a burning house." AUTHOR BIO: Mary Lynn Kotz is the author of the best-selling Upstairs at the White House, Marvella, and A Passion for Equality (with Nick Kotz). She is a contributing editor to ARTnews and has written for many major magazines in her 20-year career as a journalist. She lives in Washington, D.C.
Customer Reviews:
An Expanded Biography of Robert Rauschenberg.......2006-07-24
'Notes to accompany an exhibition' would be a fitting title for this book for those who are unaware of Mary Lynn Kotz' revised/updated biography of Robert Rauschenberg as they currently enjoy the spectacular traveling exhibition of his works, COMBINES, currently filling the generous spaces of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Though the accompanying exhibition catalogue/book COMBINES, also available through Amazon.com, touches on many aspects of Rauschenberg's life, Kotz is a bit more conversational and adds to the art history aspect of the painter's life by a broader survey of his output.
Rauschenberg is about as American as they come, being born in Texas to a conservative family, destined for a career in the ministry but instead electing to flee the home and settle in New York where his more bohemian aspects blossomed into the important art figure he has become. His life has been enriched by alliances with Jasper Johns and Merce Cunningham, by struggle with some addictions, a bumpy personal life, but he has always been a warm, friendly, rather selfless artist who was unafraid to create art that reflects his life and times.
Some of the more helpful information Kotz delivers concerns Rauschenberg's idiosyncratic art techniques, creative modes in painting, photography, collage, construction, print making, and contributions to the theater (not only with sets designed for ballets, but incorporating poetry and media in a poignant manner into his sculptural works). Rauschenberg the Humanitarian also emerges as an icon for other artists to emulate in his serious work with global communication within the arts as a manner of inviting meaningful international conversation.
The book contains a generous number of full color plates of his art and his conceptual stages. The broad aspect of the works Kotz elects to include is very much in her favor as a biographer. For those who wish to understand the man behind the extraordinary art that is traveling the country, add this fine volume to the library. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 06

The South's Third and Final Invasion of the North........2004-02-10
In the summer of 1864, Confederate troops, under the leadership of General Jubal A. Early stole an amazing march on Union forces and invaded the Shenandoah Valley. General Robert E. Lee, in an effort to counteract the pressure that Ulysses S. Grant was putting on Petersburg, had entrusted Early with the task of seizing Baltimore or Washington. So successful were the Confederates in this maneuver that the Union High Command was completely unaware they had left the Petersburg battlefield.
When he first heard reports of this march Grant did not believe the Confederates had sufficient men and material to mount such an invasion. While Grant was ultimately right, this maneuver was much more serious than a feint and the Union's response to it was awful. The Union's inability to defeat or even properly coordinate operations against Jubal Early led to the appointment of Phil Sheridan to battle the Confederates in the Shenandoah Valley and free Washington from Southern threats. But the Federal defensive cover in the Shenandoah and in the Baltimore/Washington corridor was so thin that a full division had to be diverted from Petersburg to Washington for its defense. It arrived in the nick of time.
This campaign was a near thing. Confederate forces came so close to Washington that President Lincoln came under hostile fire, the only US President to ever do so. While Grant was ultimately correct, the Confederates were not strong enough to launch an effective attack against Washington's defenses, Grant was also wrong: His army was out flanked and his capital was defenseless.
This was an amazing undertaking. The logistics alone were awesome and the battles fought were fierce. It was the South's third and final invasion of the North, the very last rabbit in the Confederacy's hat.
Mr. Cooling's effort here is quite good.

Book Description
During the summer of 1864 General Grant was hammering at the gates of Richmond and the Confederacy seemed doomed. In a bold and desperate stroke, General Lee countered by sending Jubal A. Early and a force of only twelve thousand men toward Washington, D.C. After some victories along the way, they crossed the Potomac and caused plenty of confusion and consternation in the capital before retreating. Early reportedly said: "We haven't taken Washington, but we've scared Abe Lincoln like hell!" In fact, Lincoln kept cool, but a lot of others on the Union side did not. The story of that daring diversion, its losses and gains, is memorably told in Jubal's Raid.
Customer Reviews:
Great Adventure.......2007-06-05
The fact that Early was able to make this raid is in itself a miracle. This is by far the most entertaining and best researched book on this subject. It offers great fun and deep understanding of this most important Civil War action. Early is a complex figure and Vandiver shows us the person under the facade.
The Most Outstanding Account of the 1864 Valley Campaign.......2000-02-05
Many works about Jubal Early's 1864 Valley Campaign have been produced, but none come close to this one. Frank Vandiver's JUBAL'S RAID stands out as, by far, the most lively and insightful of all the 1864 Valley histories, keeping the reader riveted throughout. This is a superb book that should be on every Civil War library shelf.
Book Description
Fresh insights on the extent to which today's new media--from fax machines and the Internet to pulp fiction and video cassettes--have transcended local and state boundaries and worked to reform notions of gender, authority, justice and politics in Muslim societies emerge from this provocative book.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable and informative.......2000-07-31
I most enjoyed reading New Media in the Muslim World. This bookexamines the recent introduction of mass education and theavailability of new media (including: fax machines, private and satellite Television channels, internet, desktop publishing as well as video tapes and telephone) in the Muslim World. These new media challenge existing modes of governmental and religious authority and creates new discursive spaces for the articulation of ethnic and religious identities.
This work starts with three theoretically oriented chapters and continues with ethnographies. All case study presented in the collection are immensely relevant to new media researchers, although only one of them deals specifically with the Internet.
Other themes consist of: the continuity between old and new in popular culture (Armbrust), interactions between technology and culture in the new "communication ecology" (White), how new communication networks have de-centered debates on the construction of ethnic identity to Europe (Yavuz), the narrowing gap between broadcast production and audiences and the intellectualization of Islamic discourse (both by Eickelman), the discovery of the civil society as a topic for debate in the Muslim world (Norton), etc.
One of the book's strengths is that no simplistic causal link is assumed between new communication technologies and their social impact. The essays are informed by a rich ethnographical context and an understanding of larger social and political.
This book comes to fill this gap with case studies of regions as diverse as diverse as Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey, Iran, the Arab world, and the United States...
