      Book Description

Graham Hill's career was one of the most remarkable in modern motor racing. It spanned 20 turbulent years in the history of the sport. His first racing cars were the conventional front-engined cars of the 1950s, which were painted in national colors. In his final races, in the 1970s, he drove sophisticated, bewinged rear-engined cars that carried the colors of their commercial sponsors. At his peak in the mid-1960s he was at the forefront of grand prix and sports car racing, competing against the very best drivers of the era - Clark, Surtees, Gurney, Rindt, Stewart. Today his name, along with theirs, evokes one of the classic ages of motor racing. John Tipler's new biography of this determined and popular man recalls the great victories in his long versatile career - his two Formula 1 world championships and 14 grand prix wins and triumph at the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. But he also explores Hill's background and character and shows how his courage and persistence earned him a pre-eminent position as one of the best all-around drivers and outstanding competitors of his day. He also considers Hill's later move from driving to team ownership, a new stage in a tireless career which was so cruelly cut short when he and the principal members of his team were killed in a plane crash in 1975.

Readers who enjoy poker will love Poker Nation, an energetic and obsessive account of America's favorite card game, told with intelligence and panache. Andy Bellin writes in the first person and from the gut, recounting stories about poker fanatics (himself among them) and dispensing advice on how to play the game: "You have to maximize profits through guile and savvy, eke out every last dollar that your competition is willing to lose to you--and, when you don't have the winning cards, flee as fast as possible." Aphorisms leap off the pages: "The worst hand in poker is the second-best one at the table" and "People say the mark of a con is in the details." Whether readers prefer the anecdotes about double-bluffing and illegal poker clubs or the tips on when to hold and when to fold (there's even a table showing the "Chances of Drawing Helpful Cards from a Deck of Forty-Seven Unknown Cards"), anybody interested in its subject matter will find Poker Nation engrossing. --John Miller

        4 out of 5 stars fun & informative.......2006-09-06

This book reminds me of another good poker book, All In by Jonathan Grotenstein & Storms Reback. It a little bit of many different things. There's poker advice, poker history, biographies, poker stories, and humor. It's a great book for someone who wants to learn a thing or two about poker but doesn't just want to read strategy books like Super System.

        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2006-07-28

If you ever wondered if the world of poker is for you, read this book! most poker players will never set at the million dollar game(or table) - most poker players have to grind it out hour after hour - this book tells you all about that world!

4 out of 5 stars A good read for traders aka gamblers .......2006-03-24

I dont play poker at all. I picked this book up with the intent of improving my stock, currency and commodities trading under the premise that professional poker players and traders are two of a kind. Despite my ignorance of poker, I find this book a real page turner covering not only poker skills and tactics, but its addictive and even devastating effect on life of many poker players. It's very interesting and informative. The author's writing skill is excellent. No matter whether you like poker or not, if you are interested in reading fascinating stories, you will be very satisfied.

p.s. As per whether it will help my trading, a little bit, I must say.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to the world of poker.......2005-09-09

"Poker Nation" is the perfect introductory book for those new to the game, especially if you've just started getting into the 2005 World Series of Poker coverage. It's more of a series of anecdotes, musings, and observations than it is an Xs and Os how-to guide, so you won't get overwhelmed by the technical aspects of the game. Bellin's personal style of writing conveys all the highs and lows that poker can entail, and does so in a humorous, self-deprecating manner. If you're like me and rarely read books from cover-to-cover, you might be surprised how much of an easy read this can be.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, interesting and informative .......2005-04-19

This book is a little difficult to categorise. It is not really an autobiography, it is not a poker 'how-to' manual although it does provide some interesting insights. So what is it? It seems to be a book about deciding to write a book.

Andy Bellin has a simple, easy to read prose style. The book proceeds at great pace mixing personal experiences and anecdotes very effectively, providing an interesting and illuminating insight into the world of poker and addiction. I was gripped from the first chapter and read the book very quickly. It is often funny, sometimes chilling and slightly scary but it always holds your interest. It is also thought provoking as it prompts readers to consider their own attitude to gambling and addiction in general.

Most these letter appear to be in violation of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. I did not find it very useful for anyone trying to run an ethical business.

I purchased this book when I was starting my own collection agency and found many great letters here. I mostly used parts of different letters to create my own, but there were alot of great peices to use together. I liked this book so much I purchased it for a friend of mine who was also starting her own collection agency. I would recommend this book to help you create your own debt collection letters. There is quite a bit of good information in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Very, very basic book.......2004-01-08

Upon receipt of this book I was very, very disapointed.

If you are looking for a collection letter book that gives solid, indepth letters that include FDCPA tags and other inportant collection letter information, this is not the book to buy.

The letters are very basic (people with zero experience might find this to be a starting point) and it glosses over many topics. OR does not address them at all. (If you need letters for accounts more than 90 days past due -- there is no help here.)

I will be very wary of what I buy on Amazon based on this experience. If you are doubtful about buying it -- don't!

                      Book Description

Anna Quindlen first visited London from a chair in her suburban Philadelphia home—in one of her beloved childhood mystery novels. She has been back to London countless times since, through the pages of books and in person, and now, in Imagined London, she takes her own readers on a tour of this greatest of literary cities.

While New York, Paris, and Dublin are also vividly portrayed in fiction, it is London, Quindlen argues, that has always been the star, both because of the primacy of English literature and the specificity of city descriptions. She bases her view of the city on her own detailed literary map, tracking the footsteps of her favorite characters: the places where Evelyn Waugh's bright young things danced until dawn, or where Lydia Bennett eloped with the dastardly Wickham.

In Imagined London, Quindlen walks through the city, moving within blocks from the great books of the 19th century to the detective novels of the 20th to the new modernist tradition of the 21st. With wit and charm, Imagined London gives this splendid city its full due in the landscape of the literary imagination.

                      Praise for Imagined London:

1 out of 5 stars Shallow literate tourist's view of London.......2007-03-17

There is so much written about London that a book this short can only say so much. For those of us that already know London very well (the real place as well as the fictional) we learn more from this book about Ms.Quindlen and her limited life experience than anything else. In London she wanders the well worn tourist trail and has nothing new to say, it's interesting to hear her well read tourist's perceptions of the city, although that is, in the end, all they are.
Most of her literary references are to classic nineteenth and early twentieth century novels thus limiting her scope to the aforesaid well trod trail. Very little contemporary fiction is mentioned. No childrens literature, no gay fiction, nothing that couldn't be considered 'serious literature' is referenced. Where is the London of P.L Travers, Zoe Heller, Paul Burston, Hanif Kureishi, Will Self, Alan Hollinghurst or David Baddiel to name a few ?
The section on the Borough is irritatingly packed full of factual inaccuracies such as her reference to the 'Little Dorrit Church' as though that was it's name (it is actually the church of St.George the Martyr and predates the novel by more than a century although this book gives the impression that it is a church commemorating a fictional character; there is a window depicting Little Dorrit there, but no-one locally refers to it as the 'Little Dorrit Church'); this section sounds as though she spent an afternoon in the area and did very little research, she omits to describe anything in the area such as the wall next to the church that is possibly the last remnant of the Marshalsea so I am suspicious as to whether she even went there. If she is interested in Dickens, and I understand from reading this book that she is, there were far more interesting places to have written about such as the site of the blacking factory at Hungerford stairs, which is now Hungerford Lane and is the entrance to 'The Soundshaft' a club underneath Charing Cross station ; or she could have gone to 'The Grapes' in Limehouse to the pub described in 'Our Mutual Friend', but as I have said her scope is as limited as the average tourist with their free tourist map of "Historic and Literary London". I found it very frustrating as there were so many places that I could have shown her that I'm sure she would have been interested in. She did the usual London tourist thing of barely venturing outside Zone 1. There is so much she is missing.

There is so much more to the imaginary London than the author conveys. This book feels like it was dictated to complete an assignment. Buy the Ackroyd book, London: A Biography instead...and then use your own imagination. I agree with previous reviewers who called it superficial with the real book still waiting for an author to write it.

i love anna quindlen, i love literature, i love landscapes of the imagination, and i love london, so i was ready to love this book. however, it didn't give me nearly the depth i wanted. the essays are oddly generic, the comments oddly superficial. i was left with little impression, literary or geographical. i'm sad.

1 out of 5 stars A Skip and a Dash in the Dark.......2005-12-13

I had such high hopes for a book that got to the heart of my favorite city and my favorite literature. However, first it dismayed, then depressed, then just made me plain angry that Ms. Quindlen could be so superficial, so full of cliches, have such shallow skills of description and so absolutely little insight into either London or literature. Surely someone soon will pick up the inky scratches and try again.

                      4 out of 5 stars A delightful read.......2005-06-19

London looms large, in literature, in "real" life, and in the literary and cultural imagination. In this delightfully absorbing book, Quindlen, a former New York Times columnist, describes her first introduction to London-through books-and her second-on a book tour trip. She admits that she was fearful of shattering the magical image she held of London, and so put off a visit to the actual city for years. Only in her mid-forties did Quindlen finally make the trip, and she was relieved to discover that its charms and quirks were even better than she had imagined.

The chapters are loosely connected, with witty gems that regular readers of Quindlen will expect. She alludes to the great writers who have lived in London, suggests out-of-the-way detours about the city, and reflects on the present-day capital of the United Kingdom.

If a reader expects the author to provide sound-bite sidebars and details about where to eat and stay, he or she will be vastly disappointed and probably not make it beyond the first few pages. But if you've been to London and loved it, or if you have read Thackery and Dickens, Henry James and Monica Ali, you'll revel in this literary tour. Quindlen's rich narrative style will have you, like it did me, looking for airline tickets for another visit to this amazing city. Don't forget to pack this book along with anything by Dickens.

Stunning and an eye opener. Untill I stumbled over this book a few years ago it had never occured to me that WW2 was anything but black and white. Even people who have no particular interest in the war are mesmerized when I show them the book.

Excellent book which present an entirely fresh look to a war we're so familiar with. Good enough for any war-buff and valuable resource material for modellers. Photos are of hi-quality, sharp and beautifully taken. T's unfortunate that many photos are rather static, but it is hardly anybody's fault. I'm eagerly looking forward for the next volume

This book brings together 3 key elements for both students and professors. It provides an overview of the historical information to make sense of current U.S. foreign policy; it supplies case studies to give students grounding in key events in U.S. foreign policy and information on contemporary issues; and it incorporates concepts that structure an investigation into U.S. foreign policy. The focus is on U.S. policy itself and not on U.S. foreign policy toward specific regions or issues.

Hastedt's book is a well worded and actually rather objective perusal of American foreign policy from its root in the 18th century to President Clinton's decisions to go into Bosnia. I read this book towards the beginning of this year and was surprised about how up to date it was. The writing is very easy to follow and the book follows a very strong methodological format -- beiniing with the theoretical underpinnings of US foreign policy, then on to its early history, then to models of decisionmaking. This section as well is quite good -- it shows the decisionmaking models in the context of the Cuban Millsile crisis, Grenada, and also some about Bush and Desrt Storm/Desert Shield. The section on the Cuban Missile Crisis itself is somewhat misleading, but Halstedt's greatest strength is his assesments of the future of American international engagement.
