I read Alison Plowdens first two books on Elizabeth when they came out years ago. It's nice to know they are being republished. Marriage with My Kingdom is so compelling I couldn't put it down. Elizabeth was shrewd enough to know that she couldn't have a husband and rule the England as well. How many of us would do that? I can't wait until the fourth volume comes out.

Living beneath the horizon.......2007-09-30

The 'mole people' are not a singular group of people: their reasons for living in the tunnels are varied, and the degree to which the tunnels constitute 'home' also differs. In the world depicted in Ms Toth's book, there are individuals, collectives and communities existing in (largely) man-made spaces built for other purposes. In this world (as in all worlds), we see triumph, ingenuity, despair and different levels of belonging.

I think that Ms Toth did a good job of presenting what she saw and understood. All realities are relative.

The Mole People.......2007-09-10

This book was an eye-oener for me. I had no idea so many people lived in the underground of NYC. I also was interested to know that many of thes people are satisfied with their life below the city.

Another world exists beneath the streets of NYC.......2007-09-07

The Mole People provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of society's castaways, people who, for various reasons, chose or were forced to live in the catacombs beneath New York City. Toth describes the society that has evolved under the streets, and details the everyday lives of the misfits, outcasts, and dropouts who inhabit that subterranean world. The vignettes she presents are moving, disturbing and thought provoking, and many times just plain spooky. For instance, Toth often describes her amazement at how quietly the tunnel dwellers moved--most approached so silently that she didn't sense their presence until they were only inches away.

Toth's narrative is gripping--I often felt as if I were reading a suspense novel rather than a work of non-fiction. A chapter midway through the book, entitled "Dark Angel," is especially intriguing. In it, Toth describes a tunnel dweller who many swear is the devil himself. Her description of the man "who knows what will scare you" evoked memories of my first encounter with Randall Flagg in Stephen King's apocalyptic novel The Stand. Toth's description, however, is more frightening because it is based on grim reality.

interesting subject, okay book.......2007-07-24

The subject matter of this book is very interesting, but it is just an okay book. The main problem with the book is that it is repetative, telling parts of the same story over and over again. It also references individual "stories" in the book before they are told, leaving you wondering whether you missed something. However, the book is still interesting; it just leaves you wishing you had a little more.

Opens your eyes whether you want to or not............2007-06-10

This slim volume is original research that is brave, refreshing and depressing. Brave because she descended deep into the guts of New York City which is very dangerous, refreshing because she did her research thoroughly and told it like she experienced it, and depressing because so much of what goes on down there IS an escape from some of the worst aspects of modern life--as bad as it is in the tunnels, there is a sense of community, family, and cooperation that is fading topside. As short as the book is, it took me many nights to finish it: I couldn't really put it down, but I could only digest a little at a time. Instead of fostering morbid fascination, it ellicits compassion and understanding, even a feeling of solidarity with the Mole People....

The book takes a commomn sense approach to investing which is best because ivesting is basically intuitive. However, through the book I have learned that with most things in life if you take your time you reap the rewards for longer. This is not a get rich scheme, however, if yoiu want to live well I would definitely purchase this book.

Read Graham and Buffett, not this book.......2007-04-08

Please read the other reviews warning you about the content of this book. I did not believe them, they were right. Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffett are the two people I have modeled my investment style by. (Which has enabled me to return 24% over the past 4 years). How could I not read this book based on the title? While Cunningham did an outstanding job compiling the essays of Warren Buffett, this book was incredibly tedious and I do not think captured either of the great men's thoughts. This book is 5% Graham, 5% Buffett and 90% the author. He is a law professor if that gives you an idea of the writing style.This book droned on for 40 pages about corporate governance, you had to read for hours to stumble on to a nugget of Graham and Buffett. Save yourself the trouble and buy Cunningham's other book "The essays of Warren Buffett" he did an excellent job compiling that book.It is actually the book Warren Buffett told CNBC viewers to read to get his real investing style. Also read Benjamin Graham's books start with "The Intelligent Investor". Or buy Janet Lowe's book "The rediscovered Benjamin Graham selected writings of the Wall Street legend" This book's title should have been "How to think like Professor Cunningham's students and invest like a teacher".

Skip the first 10 chapters, the rest is best.......2007-01-03

I found the best parts of this book were the last chapters talking about Disney, GE and Coca Cola and their CEO's.

I was very lost with the LARGE words in the begining, if there was a revision made to put the first 10 chapters into plain folk language I might have found it easier to digest.

It also sounded more like a review of info from someone who had not "been there and done that..." rather a look from the outside.

Cunninghams summary book, "The Essasys of Warren Buffett" is 100 x's better as a use of your time in my opinion.

This is not an easy review to write because the truth is that Dr. Stubbs' work has totally changed my perspective as to the reasons why women and men participate in sexual work. I am amazed with the information and it's presentation and could hardly put the work down as each chapter opened my mind to the sacredness and necessity of this area of service to humanity. I heard the voices of these women and their concern for the healing of clients and their dedication to wholeness. The material was organized in an easy to understand and intimate first voice monologues that were both compelling and entertaining; at night I could hardly put the work down. The subject matter is essential for every woman to read as we try to find our way through the mis-information that our society has given us about our role and seek to appreicate the gift of sexuality.

I really loved this book. I bought it during a tantra workshop, started reading and couldn't put it down. It was an eye opening look into the spirit of a few women who have been unwilling to let the prevailing culture dictate who they are as sexual beings. Twenty five years ago a major ruckus was caused when My Secret Garden : Women's Sexual Fantasies by Nancy Friday hit the book racks. Men and women who feared their erotic fantasies called it pornographic, yet today books on sexuality, segregate sex partners, orgasm coaches and sacred prostitutes are in vogue.

Using the BIP CD Rom the keyword "sex" brought up 6,058 matching titles --- someone out there darling is focusing on the physical. One of those writers is Kenneth Stubbs', In "Women of the Light" Stubbs has collected nine essays that look at the exploits of the nine "sacred prostitutes". These are various women who supposedly bring together "spirituality" and sex for money (about the same way a professional athlete brings together "spirituality" and "sports" for money - not). This is a radical book attempting to make the case that "sexwork" can be a source of healing, psychological growth and spiritual awareness. You decide. Conditionally Recommend.

Valuable leadership lessons, drawn from life........1997-08-03

This work, the second of a set of three, continues General Newman's lessons in leadership, specifically designed for military leaders but with universal application.
There is some repetition due to their origin as periodical essays in ARMY Magazine, but this does not detract from their value to anyone in a leadership situation. In fact, it might well be said that with diligent application of General Newman's principles, one could hardly fail.

Outstanding tips on dealing with others.......1997-01-25

This is a book I've always recommended to young men and women entering the military as officers. It gives the best explanation, through anecdote, of how to be a good leader, even when you lack experience. As I reflect on my memories as both officer and enlisted, I now see how these topics relate to civilian life just as well. Dealing with people never changes. Mumper provides a comprehensive overview of trends in college finance from 1965 to the present. He chronicles how the creation of the federal student aid programs, coupled with increasing state support of higher education, substantially lowered college price barriers during the late 1960s and 1970s. Since 1980, however, the rising costs of providing a higher education have combined with stable state support to drive tuitions rapidly upward. Simultaneously, the federal government began shifting a larger portion of student aid funds away from grants to lower income students toward loans to middle and upper income students. The result is that students are forced to finance a greater portion of their larger college costs.

This analysis concludes with an evaluation of several plans to reform the college finance system including the new direct lending program, high tuition/high aid funding strategies, and expanded repayment options, including national service. Drawing from the best of each of these ideas, the book outlines a plan to make the existing programs better achieve their original purpose by targeting more aid to the most needy students.

I bought this because I very much liked a new book my one of the authors. I was blown away by the information in this book. I know so much more about the dangers posed by toxic chemicals. The book has definitely altered my thinking and actions. I am also amazed by the political struggle of the Inuit to get attention paid to the unique pollution problems that they face -problems they did not cause.

Very informative review of a critical global environmental issue. Very accessible for the non-expert but also lots of detail for those with greater knowledge. The fantastic pictures, graphs and charts really put things in perspective and make details easy to understand -- as does the great chronology and glossary. The book has a fantastic set of contributors including leading scientists, policy-makers, environmental advocates, indigenous representatives, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Porgramme and the Minister of the Environment in Canada.
