Startling life of 1930's woman in the Galapagos.......2005-11-06

I highly recommend reading this book along with John Trehernes book on the Galapagos mystery which covers this period of Floreana's history. Margaret Wittmer and her husband and son were three of the first people to live on the tiny and almost deserted island of Floreana in the Galapagos.

Margaret and her husband settled there in the 1930's - nearby were the very strange couple Dr Ritter and his acolyte and lover Dora. Later another very strange woman settled there (the result being a strange disappearance and death) but these are secondary in some ways to the simple way of life Margaret lived on the island. The constant battles with nature to survive. It must have been astonishing in contrast to have the Millionaires yachts arriving at various intervals.

Some trials were greater than others, during her time Margaret gave birth to a new baby on her own.

This account has been written by Margaret and is highly personal. She is not a professional writer and sometimes the narrative suffers but it is powerful and detailed enough to make this a minor inconvenience. The sheer fascination of someone heading off in the 30's to live the life of a near hermitism on an isolated pacific island is compelling. The complications of politics, people and enormous egos means there is ample material to carry you through.

This is a great book. It was absoulutely unbelievable how the Wittmer's started with practically nothing to succeed even their expectations and live on Floreana for as long as they did. You'll be glued to every page.

An amazing story, with a touch of unsolved mystery.......2003-01-27

Jill and I went to the Galapagos Islands in 1996, something we had wanted to do for several years. In preparation, we collected information on the islands by previous travelers, and this is the first of many books we read about these isolated islands in the Pacific, roughly 600 miles west of Equador on the South American mainland.

Wittmer, her husband Heinz, and her stepson Harry originally landed on Floreana in 1932. The only other people on Floreana were two fellow German nationals: Dr. Ritter, a self-avowed vegetarian and nudist who was determined to prove his theory that a human could live double their normal span if they followed his ideas on purity of mind and spirit, and his most devoted disciple, Dora. They initially lived in a natural cave previously used by pirates in the 1800s, then built a successive series of homes. Wittmer gives birth to the first human native of Floreana, they battle wild cattle for possession of their garden, encounter the "Empress of Floreana," ad survive at least three different Equadorian governors, one of which tries to have them evicted. Their visitors include American millionaires on round-the-world cruises, the crew of cargo vessels that kindly stop to deliver and pick up mail in a sort of marine pony express, several scientists and naturalists including the famed explorer Thor Heyerdahl, and presidents of both Equador and the United States.

Wittmer's account is not so much about the islands than it is about herself and her family's struggle to survive on the island. That doesn't mean you don't come away from Floreana with an understanding of the islands--you do, but the point-of-view is that of the settler, rather than what one has come to expect of from the Galapagos (say, Darwin's scientific accounts from Voyage of the Beagle).

I've often said that travel accounts (even of the sedentary nature as this one) resemble science fiction. Both treat a human encounter with the unknown in a factual nature, one being fiction and the other factual. In Floreana, isolated from normal human civilization, Wittmer and her family experience a true alien encounter with our world and its native creatures.

I'm so glad Margret Wittmer wrote of her experiences on Floreana. I really enjoyed reading about her and her husband building a family and a farm on this Galapagos Island. It was so unique and interesting that I believe her story will stay with me for a long time.

Grant Stevens is coming on fast. The Silent Option/Warning Order are good reads, gripping adventure. Looking forward to next book.

I will make this short and sweet...

If you want to know what seals go though with training, and carry out missions its a great book...it just can get a little confusing with all the abreviations.

If you want a no-brainer book with lots of action, lots ofblood & lots of sex, than this book is for you. Because this bookhas a lot of those elements, but nothing more. It offer absoluatly nothing new concerning the tactic, the technology or the thinking of special operation. It seems that all the female agents in the world only use sex to collect intellence. So, if you want only sex & blood, this is your book. Otherwise, avoid this.

Good first half, tied to a plot aimed at Joe Six-pack.......1999-10-28

This is definately a dual-personality book. The training and background information is wonderful and gives excellent first-hand insight. In fact, I could have been perfectly satisified if the book finished with the deployment of the team. While it is obvious what characters will survive the training - this is but a minor flaw to the first half.

However, then there is the rest of the book. Where our wonderfully square-jawed superman hero fights against someone that only he seems able to stop. The women are little more than hookers, while the bold American men stride through obstacles that nobody else can handle - characterization takes a drop and realism takes a back seat to flights of fantasy. I really hate to see such a transparent plot jacked into what could have been an excellent book.

Rip out the last half of the book and you have a good story and some over-the-top, but acceptable characters. Taken as a whole........well, it's a poor read. Still, if you are a fan of Clancy's later books (where everyone is incompetant except our brave perfect and god-like heroes) then you should be able to muddle through.

Silent Option is a fabulous and entertaining read!.......1999-03-23

This is a fabulous and entertaining read! I found myself enthralled with the characters, the plot, and the action! So often, books in the action-adventure genre are very predictable. Few are believable and fewer still offer any real insights into the way the world operates. Reading Silent Option, I had a sense that everything occurring could possibly be true. Larry's grasp of international affairs, coupled with his fundamental understanding of human nature, really brought this book to life for me. I found myself really caring about the lead character, Derek Evans, and his personal struggle to stay true to his principles. I definitely recommend this book, and I truly hope we hear more from Larry Simmons. He is a major talent.

A vivid representation of Special Ops Combat by the SEALs.......1999-01-26

I am average person and am put off by overly descriptive novels and books were so many adverbs and adjectives are thrown at the reader that one looses track of the story line. These are the books we are forced to read in High school and college. A book that requires the instructor of the class to paraphrase and reiterate the main idea of the book just so that everyone can follow along. That's were this book doesn't go. It has a brilliant yet pure linguistic style, written to taste touch and fell the story not to impress some arrogant professors at Harvard. You fell the brutality of war, the decisiveness of the heroes, and the coldness of the villains. Best of all is the sensation of victory and belief that courage, honor, valor and the destruction of all obstacles make life worth living. Perhaps if this book was required reading in our nation's schools and universities, are young could learn about values, morality and why we as a nation must stand against all oppressors domestic and foreign no matter what the odds, simply because it is right. All hail Larry Simmons, hero and master of words and actions. This man has more honor in his toe then Bill Clinton's entire family has in their bodies. I thank you all for valuing my review and wish you well.

As I mention in the title, this book offers a great wealth of information on many different topics in American government. The pieces are condensed so that one can understand the authors most important arguments. This anthology has proved an invaluble resource when composing countless papers. While this review sounds like an ad for the book, it is not. This book will aid many poli sci students in their understanding of the subject.

A useful, refence for quick, interesting political passages.......2001-04-30

The value of Ann Serow and Everett Ladd's work rests in the value of lofty ideas versus specific evidence. The editors have taken these extensive works and broken them down to the bare bones of the arguement, a formidable task for political figures such as V.O. Key, Alexis de Toqueville, and Jesse Ventura. The editors have done a fine job, not only in giving the authors' arguments concisely, but also in maintaining a rational flow to their arguements. The editors masterfully leave the background research to the political science student. The only problem with the book is that it the selections focus little on environmental politics, which is a field unjustly neglected by political science as a discipline, and in politics today. So in the realm of environmental awareness, unfortunately, editors make no strides forward.

The Handbook of Air Toxics compiles, defines, and clarifies several methods and concepts of airborne toxic substances found in the environment. This comprehensive reference helps regulators, consultants, and other environmental professionals meet the challenges of sampling and analysis, emissions reductions, and health and safety issues related to human exposure. It is an important reference addressing the ongoing concern about the consequences of air pollution, and the implementation and modification of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Air Act. Some of the methods described in the Handbook of Air Toxics include fluorescence, thermal desorption, selected ion monitoring, ion chromatography, light microscopy, specific electrode analysis, titration, colorimetry, atomic absorption, and spectrophotometry. It also covers the use of isokinetic sampling trains, midget impingers, carbon molecular sieves, and sampling canisters in the analysis of air toxics. The Handbook also contains recommendations from the EPA for analytical methods for those air toxics where methods do not already exist and provides advance information on future method development by the EPA.
