Book Description
Charming, intelligent, and abundantly talented, the beautiful Princess Zinaida Alexandrovna Volkonsky embodied the romantic spirit of an age that her fascinating life epitomized. At the Russian imperial court of Alexander I in the early 1800s, the young Zinaida captured the heart of the czar himself before her marriage to his aide-de-camp Prince Volkonsky took her across Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. Afterward, at the peace celebrations, she won wide praise in London and Paris, Vienna and Verona, for her musical performances, while in Moscow her literary salon prompted Alexander Pushkin to dub her the "Queen of the Muses and of Beauty." Following Zinaida across continents, this superbly researched biography also maps the spiritual journey of the princess, who eventually traveled to Rome, there to embrace more fully the Roman Catholic faith she had adopted. There, too, she welcomed artists like Stendhal, Rossini, Donizetti, Sir Walter Scott, and Nikolai Gogol at her salon, though ultimately she took Franciscan vows of poverty and dedicated the last decade of her life to the poor, who gathered in crowds to mourn the death in 1862 of the woman they knew simply as la beata.
Customer Reviews:
The Lifeless Life of a Russian Princess.......2001-07-03
Princess Zinaida Volkonsky was apparently one of those handful of beautiful and charming women who scent the pages of 18th c. histories. Cultured, wealthy, aristocratic and intellectual, they held sway over Tsars and Kings, salons and balls, their glittering jewels and extravagant gowns highlighting their beauty, their wit and learning flavoring their conversation.
A talented musician, poet, hostess and political medler, Princess Zinaida was born into the Russian aristocracy, and came to adulthood during a fascinating chapter in that country's history. Russia of the late 18th c. was more open, more Western and more powerful than it would be for centuries. This exotic and connected Princess had the ear (and heart) of the young Alexander I who had just defeated Napoleon after his diasterous attempt to conquer Mother Russia. She was friendly with Gogol, Pushkin, Turgenev and other writers who were at that moment raising Russian literature to glorious heights. She traveled from St. Petersberg to Venice to Paris to Rome to Vienna and back at a time when such travel was rare and arduous. She captivated young men, ignored her too patient husband, and impressed all around her with her many alluring attributes. Pulled toward the Church of Rome, she finally converted to Catholicism, settled in Rome, built a lovely villa with enchanting gardens and worked her charms on Cardinals and Bishops. She died of pneumonia after giving her warm petticoat to an old street woman, but not after establishing a number of religious schools for girls in and around Rome.
So why is this book so deadly dull? The ingredients for a delicious biography a la Nancy Mitford's "Pompador" are so readily to hand, but first-time author Maria Fairweather is unable to bring her fairy Princess to life. She remains flat on the pages, alway busy, yes, but also annoyingly neurotic, selfish and, frankly, not very interesting. Her faith and conversion is never convincingly explored, her circle of friends is impressive, but there is no hint of what drew these fascinating men to the lovely Zinaida. The central character of this book is missing. She isn't a mystery, she is a cipher.

INSIDE SCOOP.......2007-06-08
I purchased this book looking for some insight into the minds of the women of the nfl. Nicole Berti lays it out in a forward, plain spoken, no holds barred analysis. She covers the draft, life in a new city, her NFL peers and the life - the good, the bad and the ugly. She makes a great point about the woman married to these guys - they are always asked if they married them pre-fame or post-fame. She nails it on the head when she reveals the assumptions made by the public, the fans and the groupies. Great read for anyone who is looking for the real NFL from a womans perspective - not the tv version.
Not bad.......2005-12-10
Interesting, but I was not sure if she was trying to be informative or do lots of name dropping. Also there is name calling and mud slinging. Still, an interesting read for the most part.
WOW!!.......2005-01-27
What an eye-opening book this is!! Nikki doesn't hold back and for anyone who reads it, you too will be surprised. Or maybe you won't! Maybe it will be exactly how you pictured the NFL, but I doubt it.
For anyone interested in life inside the NFL.......2004-11-28
This is a "must read" for anyone who:
1. Is a player in the NFL
2. Is the mother, wife, girlfriend of an NFL player
3. Is someone aspiring to play in the NFL
4. Is the parent of someone aspiring to play in the NFL
5. Is a relative of someone playing in the NFL
6. Is someone who's interested in life inside the NFL!
The author, Nikki Berti doesn't pull any punches in her first-account expose. She names names, and provides details of some of the bizarre, rude, obnoxious players, wives, and coaches of some of your favorite franchises. This is the entertainment part of her book!
The instructional part comes in the form of actions taken and decisions made by Nikki and her husband Tony. Some are good, sound decisions. Decisions that kept the Berti's from falling into the traps associated with money and fame. But Nikki also discusses the mistakes they made. What decisions they would do over if given the chance; if someone had written a book honestly presenting the less glamorous side of professional sports. Nikki has written such a book.
If given the chance to do it all over again, would Nikki and Tony do it? This is not "spoiler" review. You'll have to read the book to find out ....

Book Description
In 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee rudely interrupted the successful career and life of Edward Dmytryk, citing him with contempt of Congress. As a result, Dmytryk was fired by RKO and spent three years in England before returning to the United States to serve a six-month jail sentence and undergo a second round of hearings, during which he recanted and provided evidence against several of his former colleagues.
In this personal and perceptive book, Dmytryk sharply chronicles the history of a particularly turbulent era in American political life while examining his own life before and after the events universally called the witch hunts. He details his brief membership in the Communist Party of America, explaining his initial commitment to what he perceived as communist ideals of civil liberties, economic justice, and antifacism, followed by his eventual disillusionment with the party as it
betrayed those ideals. He goes on to provide a fair assessment of what then happened to him and the effect it had on the rest of his life.
Dmytryk describes the activities, prejudices, and personal behaviors of all the parties enmeshed in the congressional hearings on communism in Hollywood. His reactions to other members of the Hollywood Ten and his recollection of conversations with them lend his book an immediacy that is not only informative but also absorbing. Most importantly, he does not uphold an ideology but rather presents the events as he perceived them, understood them, and responded to them. Dmytryk’s account is characterized by an openness born of a mature awareness of personal trial as history.
Customer Reviews:
Odd Man Out.......2005-10-07
In 1947 Edward Dmytryk, a rising young director of such films as "Murder, My Sweet" and "Crossfire," along with 11 other Hollywood writers and executives, was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee, known to history as HUAC. HUAC's stated purpose for calling these 12 men was to expose the corrupting presence of communists in the entertainment industry and, it hoped, bar them from further employment in Hollywood. Ten, the famous Hollywood Ten, did indeed testify, were found in contempt of congress for their unwillingness to fully cooperate with the House committee and were duly punished for their intransigence. Subsequent to his appearance before congress in 1947, Dmytryk was sentenced to spend six months in a minimum security federal facility.
"Odd Man Out" is Dmytryk's story of that time. It is a unique story. Most if not all of the people who were banned by the HUAC influenced Hollywood blacklists were indeed communists, or had joined the party at some point in the past. As Dmytryk writes, naming names was the ultimate sin. And, although "HUAC was out to expose a movement rather than nail a tiny group of individuals, and in that, however illegal, unethical, and un-American it was, they obviously succeeded," the blacklisted individuals were supposed to maintain a united front. After prison and a couple of years in the wilderness, though, Dmytryk had a change of heart. Never a True Believer, it seems, it became obvious to him "the Ten had been sacrificed to the Party's purpose as a pipeline for the Comintern's propaganda... and ... if I were going to be a martyr, I wanted the privilege of choosing my martyrdom, and making my family suffer to protect the American representatives of a foreign agency would certainly not be it." And so, as a condition for reinstatement, in 1951 Dmytryk testified again for HUAC, this time as a friendly witness.
Time has exposed the communist witchhunt as a dark blemish on America's record, and those who were blacklisted have become noble martyrs. Dmytryk started out a hero but became the turncoat villain in this story. His second testimony in 1951, even though he named no new names, was never completely forgiven. Towards the end of the book Dmytryk recounts an encounter with another blacklisted director, Jules Dassin, who refused to share a stage with him and yet felt free to excoriate him during a round-table discussion of the blacklist era. Dassin's reaction wasn't untypical, and even today the blacklisted individuals are revered without quarter. Save for the turncoat Dmytryk, who, unfortunately, was forced to deal with the devil and testify against his former friends and denounce his past involvement in the communist party in America. "Odd Man Out" convinced me that he did the right thing, and reminded me that history is rarely a clear-cut matter of Right and Wrong. If you're interested in a different perspective on this difficult time I strongly recommend this book.
The Only Honest Memoir You'll Ever Find About The Ten.......1999-05-09
This book is a much needed contribution to the historical record, to undo all the mindless junk that's been said for years about what the Hollywood Ten was all about. Dmytryk's memoir is candid, honest and gets to what the heart of the matter was all about. And because he was the only one of the Ten who recognized that, he is treated now as a pariah by those who seem to think that fealty to the American Communist Party is more noble than "naming names", even when in Dmytryk's case it forced him into prison in the name of beliefs he no longer held.
Probably the best memoir of one man's break from American communism since Whittaker Chambers's masterpiece "Witness."

Leading-Edge Thought From the World's Best Business Minds "A one-stop shopping guide that shows how leaders can be successful in the year 2000 and beyond."
--American Society for Training and Development
Discover what Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, Peter Senge, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and other business-world luminaries have to say about the direction of leadership for the future. The Drucker Foundation brings together the best business minds in more than 30 never-before-published essays, each one offering a special perspective on leadership and a unique glimpse into the future.
Customer Reviews:
The Future Is Now.......2005-01-07
The Drucker Foundation in 1996 asked leadership experts and proven leaders in the private sector to contribute to a leadership compendium, the proceeds of which would be donated to charity. The theme is clear from the title: what will the leader of the future look like, and what skills will he or she need? Over 30 authors answered the call and together provide a surprisingly consistent - if occasionally contradictory - view of tomorrow's organizations and their leadership needs.
The benefit of this approach is that it forces the authors to cut to the chase. Far too many leadership/management books waste space with folksy anecdotes and maddening metaphors. These are, thankfully, generally absent from The Leader of the Future, leaving almost 300 pages of substance for the reader. Another plus is the reader's ability to find new leadership authors that appeal to him or her that might otherwise have gone overlooked.
According to these experts, the business world is changing at a pace not seen in generations. (This refrain, I admit, gets old rather quickly and makes the experts seem like leaders of the past at points.) In order for organizations to survive and thrive, they need a new type of leadership. Today, CEOs and heads of organizations are the leaders. Tomorrow, they argue, CEOs will need a new set of skills, and anyone at any level in the organization will be called on to lead. Globalization, technology, mobile jobs, and an unprecedented amount of information mean that no one person can be "the" decisionmaker. Instead, organizations need to behave like market-economy nation-states: they need to be less hierarchical, allow internal competition, give their employees more decisionmaking authority, and train their employees to make informed decisions.
The idea of training is key - virtually all of the authors agree that leaders are made, not born. At the same time, they argue that all leaders have certain qualities, including high energy, vision, and other qualities that are hard to teach. Perhaps this is why one chapter focuses on the underanalyzed quality of followership. Certain segments are broad and theoretical, others offer concrete proposals to develop leaders of the future.
What does all of this mean for the average reader? Many organizations are still hierarchical with strict rules and regulations. There is, one could argue, only so far we can go towards decentralizing, flattening and empowering. But that would be yesterday's way of thinking. The leader of the future will find ways to work within these constraints, will have a vision of the organization that will guide him or her, and will allow for the empowerment of subordinates. This somewhat populist view of the leader of the future will at a minimum provoke the reader to consider what kind of leader he or she is and whether he or she is prepared to be a leader of the future.
The Leader of the Future is one of the few books on leadership that is worth buying. Borrow it or buy it, but read it today to be prepared for tomorrow.
There's definitely a theme here.......2002-07-25
"The Leader of the Future" from the Drucker Foundation and edited by Frances Hesselbein, Marshall Goldsmith and Richard Beckhard is a management "sampler," comprising essays from academics and corporate CEOs about leadership, or specifically the kind of leadership that will be required for success of organizations in the future.
Clearly, the writers do not believe in "closed" management (the direct and control sensibility of the days of yore). To a one, they advocate investing in those below you, creating leaders in all sectors and at all levels, trusting, collaborating and "leading with vision." Some particularly interesting essays were "Leading from the Grass Roots" by Sally Helgesen, "Leadership and Organizational Culture," by Edgar H. Schein, the "father" of organizational psychology, and "The Ultimate Leadership Task: Self-Leadership" by Richard L. Leider. In general, the section with essays entitled "Learning to Lead for Tomorrow," which was about education and executive training and development was the most engaging for me.
I bought this book because I read a very engaging portrait of Marshall Goldsmith in the New Yorker in April, who is a very successful "executive coach," helping executives with personal problems in their organizations turn their relationships around. The book overall had a kind of hypnotic effect, as it repeated the same message throughout. Here's a representative excerpt:
"The challenges ahead will require leaders to identify, promote, reinforce, and live as role models of key core values; inspire diverse groups to common, shared action in which they trade some of their autonomy for a long-term greater common good; and give their best efforts in pursuit of that common good." This is from an essay by George B. Weber who is listed as the secretary-general of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
It's mildly interesting. I would recommend reading it in bits between other, different books.
A Well Articulated Roadmap--By Those Who Have Been There.......2001-06-24
This book is an outstanding compilation of 31 articles, by current and past organizational leaders, futurist, authors, etc., who share their knowledge and experiences. As they point out, the leader of the future must be serious about communication and not just pay it lip-service, they must share as much of their power, as possible, with members in the organization to make it a more powerful organization. This open communications and power sharing leads to a learning organization, that is inculturated to adapt to the changing enviornment and more importantly help "lead-turn" the organization to ensure a sustained competitive advantage.
"Leadership must be learned and can be learned".......2001-06-07
'The Leader of the Future' adresses a significant and timely topic. It should be on every manager's must-read list.
Peter F.Drucker writes in his foreword, "Leadership must be learned and can be learned-and this, of course, is what this book was written and should be used for." And hence, he defines simple but basic characteristics of effective leaders:
1. The only definition of a 'leader' is someone who has 'followers.' Some people are thinkers. Some are prophets. Both roles are important and badly needed. But without followers, there can be no leaders.
2. An effective leader is not someone who is loved or admired. He or she is someone whose followers do the right things. Popularity is not leadership. 'Results' are.
3. Leaders are highly visible. They therefore set 'examples.'
4. Leadership is not rank, privileges, titles, or money. It is 'responsibility.'
After this excellent foreword, Frances Hesselbein, Marshall Goldsmith and Richard Beckhard divide this seminal book into four parts. Here, they note that "These parts have been chosen in a somewhat arbitrary manner. We deliberately gave the authors a free hand, and our revisions have been only mirror. The authors are all experts in their own right, and we wanted you to hear their views in an unfiltered form."
It is a great chance to read never before published essays of 37 distinguished authors under one roof.
Highly recommended.
the best of the leader books.......2000-09-15
Having read about 6 leadership books in a row, I can say with this limited perspective that this is the best overall. These are great essays by a wide variety of major leaders -- every person has something significant to say about leadership and taken together, the reader can put together a detailed and rich picture about what makes a real leader. One encouraging thought is that great leaders benefit by having and creating other leaders -- no need to fear too many good leaders. So, everyone can benefit by learning how to become a leader and the change will be better for everyone involved. Each essay is short, so taken together, they are very digestible. The writing is good all around, but it's really the insights and examples from proven leaders that makes this so easy to use as a blueprint or study of leadership. Top notch ideas, well presented. Any one who serves or hopes to serve as a leader would do well by reading this book.

Step Into The Mind Of A Schizophrenic........2007-08-25
I have read a few psychology books and journal articles that dealt with schizophrenia, but the view I almost always had of the disease was the view of a detached scientist trying to understand the disease, not trying to understand how the person with the disease actually felt. This was one of the few times I got a look at what it's like to have shizophrenia from the viewpoint of the person with schizophrenia. It was very disturbing, but I would think also very helpful for a person who wants to be a therapist and work with people who have schizophrenia. You will understand the pain a person with (a certain type of) schizophrenia is experiencing if you read this book.
On the other hand, this book is very old, the events in the book took place before 1952 (the copyright of the book is 1951), when effective medications for shizophrenia first came out. Renee's story might have been very different if it had happened today, especially since the symptoms of schizophrenia that she suffers from are the type that would probably respond very well to medication (she clearly suffers from positive symptoms of schizophrenia rather than negative symptoms, and positive symptoms do respond better to medications). Also, as another reviewer kind of mentioned, Freudian analysis, the kind Renee received, is no longer widely considered an effective therapy for this disease. When Renee recovered from her illness, I had the impression that it wasn't because of any therapy she received but it was because she is one of the fortunate people who sometimes get better on their own. Studies even indicate that most people's symptoms do lessen as they get older, apparently on their own.
ok.......2007-04-30
There is no way a teenage girl who spent most of her life in an institution wrote this book. It is my guess that her psychiatrist wrote it. It reads like an encyclopedia! It's too bad because the subject matter is so interesting. But the way it was written is confusing. I would pass on this book.
Quite Good.......2003-12-23
I would have given this book 5 stars, but the Freudian analysis by Dr. Sechehaye at the end of the book is obsolete; indeed, it makes for better reading if one simply skips that section. In fact, even Freud himself thought psychoanalysis would not do schizophrenics any good.
This book should be read by anyone interested in a first-person account of what it's like to suffer from schizophrenia. It's nice that the story has a happy ending for the anonymous sufferer, often not the case for schizophrenics in the days before modern medications. Even today, it's horrible; but the chances of leading a normal life are better.

Review.......2005-09-30
An excellent summary of information on a key aspect of WW2. Virtually no other authoritative information has become available on this subject in either the historical hard-cover publications or even the "enthusiast" journals of the past 60 years.
Indispensable to anyone who wants to get an introduction to the equipment represented by those mysterious WW2 buzzwords such as Mandrel, Dina, Carpet, H2S, and the stories behind their development.

Book Description
Stretching from the redwoods of California to the vast stands of spruce and hemlock in southeast Alaska, coastal temperate rain forests have been for thousands of years home to one of the highest densities of human settlements on the continent. Given its mild climate, magnificent scenery, and abundant natural resources, the region should continue to support robust economies and vibrant communities for many years to come. However, the well-being of this region is increasingly threatened by diminishing natural capital, declining employment in traditional resource-based industries, and outward migration of young people to cities.
The Rain Forests of Home brings together a diverse array of thinkers-conservationists, community organizers, botanists, anthropologists, zoologists, Native Americans, ecologists, and others-to present a multilayered, multidimensional portrait of the coastal temperate rain forest and its people. Joining natural and social science perspectives, the book provides readers with a valuable understanding of the region's natural and human history, along with a vision of its future and strategies for realizing that vision.
Authors describe the physical setting and examine the geographic and evolutionary forces that have shaped the region since the last glacial period, with individual chapters covering oceanography, climate, geologic processes, vegetation, fauna, streams and rivers, and terrestrial/marine interactions. Three chapters cover the history of human habitation, including an examination of what is known about pre-European settlement, a consideration of the traditions of local and indigenous knowledge, and a description of the environmental and cultural upheaval brought by European explorers and settlers. The book concludes with an exploration of recent economic and cultural trends, regional and local public policy, information gathering, and the need for integrating local knowledge into decision making.
Interspersed among the chapters are compelling profiles of community-level initiatives and programs aimed at restoring damaged ecosystems, promoting sustainable use of resources, and fostering community-based economic development. The case studies describe what coastal residents are doing to combine environmental conservation with socioeconomic development, and document some of the most innovative experiments in sustainable development now underway in North America.
The Rain Forests of Home offers for the first time a unified description of the characteristics, history, culture, economy, and ecology of the coastal temperate rain forest. It is essential reading for anyone who lives in or cares about the region.

A Spectacular History of America's Rain Forests.......2006-08-03
A breathtaking synopsis of North America's best kept secrete, "The Rain Forests of Home" give the reader an in-depth look at some of the most beautiful lanscape the earth has to offer. The intelligent insight from some of America's top biologists is verbalized in a way that even George W. could follow. This is a must read for anyone who takes interest in wildlife, nature, or just their surroundings in general. I had a fabulous time indulging myself in this fountain of information, and I highly recommend it.
