With this book, the author takes a welcome look at the life of Prince Leopold, fourth and youngest son of Queen Victoria. A fascinating prince, Leopold is one royal that history has more or less forgotten save his sad position as the first known royal hemophiliac. The earnest Leopold was highly intelligent (later Oxford educated), and desperate to live some semblance of a normal life, despite his illnesses (besides his hemophilia, Leopold was also likely a mild epileptic, both of which were not well-known outside of his family). His precarious health also made his already overbearing mother keep an even shorter leash on her youngest son, and his battles for a life separate from her were hard-won.
Zeepvat is by profession a historian, and this book was definitely well-researched. The author includes much correspondence amongst a family of prolific letter-writers, and gives her audience an almost daily account of Leopold's activities and whereabouts. This approach also gives a well-rounded portrait of Leopold's personality, his thoughts on his illnesses, his struggles for independence, and his familial relationships. Aside from his dealings with Queen Victoria, Zeepvat also highlights Leopold's very close relationship with Alice, Grand Duchess of the small German principality of Hesse, and likewise her husband Louis. Zeepvat likewise describes Leopold's Oxford days well, along with the long-lasting friends he made there (Alice Liddell of Alice in Wonderland fame among them) and the happy memories he kept.
The author also offers a theory on Leopold's hemophilia coming from Victoria's mother's family. Though the disease is passed to sons by their mothers, hemophilia was previously unknown on Victoria's maternal side. Hypotheses since Victoria's time have offered suggesting that Victoria's genes were perhaps mutated. Zeepvat points out what little was known about hemophilia even in Leopold's time, and further points out several young boys of Victoria's maternal family who died of what was thought to be usual childhood maladies of the times.
The book is well-written in the fact that it is so rich in historical fact; however, Zeepvat's profession as a historian is evident, as the narrative is not particularly engaging. Also absent is much information on Leopold's wife, Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont. Though their marriage was brief (it lasted just short of two years, ending in Leopold's sudden death), Leopold had wanted to marry very badly as part of living a more ordinary life. He and Helena had a very happy relationship, unlike many arranged royal unions of the time, and had two children, a rare feat for a 19th century hemophiliac.
Nonetheless, Zeepvat has provided a solid effort with this work on Leopold, giving her audience a good picture Leopold's life, one that was all too short and is remembered far too little.
A decent biography........2006-07-04
This is a decent biography on Prince Leopold, although the author's theories on how he contracted hemophilia through his mother Queen Victoria was a little over my head, and the author could have made her explanation a bit more clearer. Also, I do wish the author would have made a family tree of Prince Leopold's descendents.
Victoria's Little Known Youngest Son.......2002-12-21
This is the first book, of the many I have read on Queen Victoria and/or her children, that focuses on Prince Leopold. Even reading the edited letters between Victoria and her daughter Vicky had very little mention of this child. The book was informative and I learned a great deal regarding her true obsessive and sometimes vicious behavior to Leopold, as a child and as a grown man. I highly recommend it.
Stinks to High Heavens!.......2002-06-24
I'd rate this less than zero, if the rating system allowed me to. This is completely lousy book and a huge waste of money! Many facts are wrong, which is a disgrace for someone of Ms. Zeepvat's experience. Her writing is flat and uninspiring and almost anything of interest is obtained from other books about the subject. Personally I'm sick of all these royal books that are basically re-packaged versions of previous books.
Great Bio of a little known royal.......2002-04-26
In the many books about Queen Victoria's family that I have read, Leopold seems to be known only for his haemophilia. He seems to have been the most popular member within the royal family, although not with his mother, who seemed to see him as a convenient drone. She was notorious for trying to keep her children on a leash long into adulthood. Leopold appears to have overcome these obstacles. In his short life, he accomplished a great deal, he was the first of the royal family to attend Oxford, he was on the boards of a great many charities, he managed to travel, and he worked as an unofficial secretary to his mother.
This is a well written and researched book. The author provides information on other more obscure members of Queen Victoria's family, such as her half sister Feodora and her family. The family tree of the female side of Victoria's family is the most extensive and interesting I have seen, although it does not solve the question of where the haemophilia in the family came from.

THIS BOOK IS A VERY QUICK LOOK AT THE GREAT CATCHER FOR THE A'S AND TIGERS. I ENJOYED THIS BOOK ALOT. THE ONLY COMPLAINT IS THAT IT IS TOO SHORT AND NOT VERY DETAILED. IT HAS SOME INTERESTING FACTS, ESPECIALLY THE PART OF TY COBB HELPING HIM FINANCIALLY. STILL HE WAS A HARD NOSED PLAYER AND MANAGER. HE WAS HUMAN, AND THIS BOOK DOES A GOOD JOB OF SHOWING HIS GREATNESS AND FAULTS. I RECOMMEND THIS FOR BASEBALL HISTORIANS AND FOR THOSE WHO APPRECIATE A GREAT PLAYER AND GOOD PERSON.
Is That All There Is?.......1999-12-23
I was so looking forward to reading this book. The effort by Charlie Bevis is good. The content is short and sweet. Seems that 180 or so pages just does not seem like enough information about as fascinating a baseball character as you will ever find. I was left wanting so much more. Of note, I found it somewhat distressing that towards the end of this book, the author did his bit to dispell the rumours about Cochrane being assisted by Cobb in his down and out years of the 50's decade. Even though he got the word from Cochrane's daughter herself that this was totally false, I was not convinced by the author himself. Anyone can flip a story or subject anyway they choose, good or bad. It is up to the author to relay and convince the reader of the truth. Sadly, this is one truth that still has not been nailed down, regardless of denials. Considering the history and negative knowledge of this particular period in Mike's life, it really is too bad that Charlie Bevis had the opportunity and really did nothing with it to solidify claims to the opposite. Too bad for Mike too. The book is good, as is the effort, but lacking in content and duration.

This is an excellent book with chords and complete musical notation for Rolling Stones singles until the eraly 1970s. The guitar parts also have complete and accurate tablatures. Together the the CD edition of the same title, it makes an invaluable study item for anyone interested in learning this music. Outstanding!
Too Many Alternate Tunings.......2007-02-08
Great collection, just like the 3-CD collection. As I practice songs in this collection, I keep wondering about all the alternate tunings. I'm sure that the Stones used alternate tunings on some of their songs, but this collection seems to use way too many. The resulting sound is accurate, but I sometimes wind up transposing the tab so that I can play it in the standard EADGBE tuning.
Rolling Stones Singles Collection.......2007-01-05
This collection of Rolling Stones numbers is far more detailed than I will probably ever be able to use (unfortunately!), but the few songs I have picked up on were all in the correct key to play along with original tracks. So, it would appear to me to be an accurate rendition and a very good reference. I am certainly not sorry I bought it, but I will be looking for a simpler songbook to compliment the material presented. A couple of my all-time favourites are missing (e.g. "Cry to Me" and "Under the Boardwalk"). Maybe the Rolling Stones Fakebook is the answer?
Invaluable source of Rock and Roll and Rythmy and Blues.......2003-12-31
I've been playing guitar for 16 years, and to my ear the transcriptions in this book are very accurate and superior to tablature you'll find posted on the web that are transcribed by amature guitarists. If this book is properly studied, and you use other teaching sources to really understand the alternate tunings and chord shapes used in these songs you can really open up the fret board in a special way with the use of this book. I also recommend the Hal Leonard Chuck Berry Tab book as a good primer for the songs in this book. With the two together you can have an advance understanding Keith Richards approach to the guitar.

The Real Beauty and Exhiliration of Math.......2002-12-02
This is a superb book, and the best way to first sample the delights of math for its own sake. Don't let the subtitle "Selections from Mathematics for the Amateur" turn you off. True, the math involved is elementary, not going beyond high school algebra and geometry. But the material won't be found in most textbooks, having been chosen with elegance and beauty, rather than utility, in mind (which isn't to say that it doesn't have its important uses). Even the professional mathematician who has already seen most of the contents will profit from studying the book's exemplary treatment of its topics. The authors are some of the best math expositors who have ever lived. Each idea in the book is developed admirably, and strikes the perfect balance between conciseness and lucidity. You probably can't do better in choosing an introduction to prime and perfect numbers, the four-color problem, regular polyhedra, Pythagorean triples, pedal triangles, periodic decimal fractions, Waring's problem, the number 30 (sic!), and many other fascinating intellectual tibdits.
At Dover's low price, this book is a great buy. Get it! If you have more mathematical knowledge, then I also recommend "Proofs from the Book" by Aigner, et al., which is written for mathematicians in a similar style.
An excellent collection of problems at the elementary level.......2000-07-12
Written by two top-notch mathematicians, requiring the mathematics that a high school student can do, this book takes you on a journey that is easy to follow and yet shows the power of mathematics. It is an excellent book for high school enrichement or early undergraduates.
Even if you are a mathematician you will be suprized at many of the results and enjoy trying to solve some of the problems. Many of the problems are quite hard. Even though some of the problems are the standard ones, many are off the beaten track. No matter what your level of expertise, I am sure you will enjoy this book.

The study guide is helpful when used along with the textbook. There is a summary of each chapter with plenty of T/F questions to determine if you understand the material from the chapters, and there are detailed explanations for false answers.

This book along with the Student Survival Guide was a great help to me. I just walked out of class with a 100 on my last test! Now for the final. Not near as nervous because these books have pushed me to remember the information that I normally wouldn't. Great buy!!
good reference.......2004-12-15
This was a pretty good study guide to go along w/ chapters 1-14 of kieso's intermediate accounting textbook (vol.1, 11th edition). Some of the lecture notes my prof. used were taken directly from the study guide - so there was some reptition. But there are also test questions such as T/F, multiple choice, and examples/self-tests for you to work on as you go through each chapter that helped out.
The text is pretty good and thorough for intermediate accounting - sometimes the study guide was a good help as far as summarizing ideas with key terms/key ideas in bold. The T/F questions and multiple choice helped as far as narrowing down important concepts and trying to gather what was really important - this is beyond the homework/and reading the text.
Overall - a pretty good supplement to the textbook and worth getting if you are serious about accounting/business/finance in the long run.

I am amazed at how women's spiritual lives from the past keep resurfacing to inspire us today. In Women of Sufism, Helminski has selected stories, dreams, prayers and visions of female saints through the ages, from the time of the first Sufi women in the seventh century through to the present day. The stories span the many regions of the world where Sufism has been practised, including Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
The mystic women documented in this anthology weave their spiritual knowledge into their family life, their household tasks, daily actions, and even into their carpets and wall hangings. They are strong in their devotion and let nothing deter them from their personal connection with the Beloved. The stories give a sense of the importance and acceptance of women as teachers.
The titles of the chapters are themselves intriguing and give a glimpse of what the stories hold: A Jewel of Knowledge, The Enraptured Ones, My Soul is a Woman, Mother Love and The Fragrance of Prayer are just a few.
The book contains many short, penetrating stories about Rabi'a al-Adawiyya, an eighth-century mystic. In the chapter A Doorkeeper of the Heart, one of my favourite tales illustrates how Rabi'a's saintliness did not depend on showiness: "One day Hasan of Basra saw Rabi'a down by the riverside. He came and sat beside her, spread his prayer-rug on the surface of the water, and said, 'Come sit with me and pray.' 'Do you really have to sell yourself in the market of this world to the consumers of the next?' said Rabi'a. Then she unrolled her own prayer-rug in thin air and sat on it. 'What you can do fish can do, Hasan, and what I did any fly can do. Our real work is beyond the work of fish and flies.'"
It is clear from the care people took to write down their dreams that they were important to the Sufis as instruments of the teachings. In this tradition, dreams are considered spiritual realities, often bearing glad tidings and providing a route through which God can communicate with devotees. The chapter Hidden Ways contains the dreams of at-Tirmidhi's wife, which he recorded in his autobiography. The inner link was so strong between husband and wife that she would dream teaching dreams for him.
In another chapter, modern-day scholar Michaela Ozelsel documents her experience of a traditional solitary retreat. Isolated in a small apartment in Istanbul with enough supplies to last forty days, she describes how inner peace unfolded and a "polishing of the heart" occurred.
Women of Sufism is a great resource for understanding women's ongoing search for the Divine. My first "greenhill military manuals" book........2003-09-08
First of all I am a real enthusiast of weapons, this is one of my six-greenhill military manuals. It is a very interesting book that reads very well and the author likes to keep it general. It covers a lot of military weapons from revolvers, pistols and assault rifles. I recommend this book to those who like to know information about general weapons.
And if your not a weapons freak!!, don't do my error of buying a book titled (modern military rifles, Greenhill military manuals) because it's information is likely the same as this book except for handguns. Overall I am very happy with my Greenhill Military Manuals.
A Basic Reference.......2001-10-18
An interesting reference guide for a few of the world's popular firearms. Unfortunately, the nice hardcover spoils what essentially is just a "flip-book" of sorts. Not much meat in the background and current usage on each, but it appears as if the majority of the description lies in the detailing of the gun's internal operation and its development. In my opinion, I feel that same space could be put to better to use for a reference book of this type: I'm not trying to build the gun, I want to know about it in its real-world standpoint! Pictures are also seriously lacking; only two plain pictures and one internal diagram for most. Perhaps I am being little harsh, so I'm giving it 4 points, just to be fair.
My bottom line: Buy this book if you want to start a reference collection or if you really have nothing else to buy. A good read, but there are clearly others better out there.

A uniquely Tejano version of the old-fashioned political barbeque, the traditional South Texas pachanga allowed politicians to connect with voters in a relaxed setting where all could enjoy live music and abundant food and drink along with political speeches and dealmaking. Today's pachanga still combines politics, music, and votes—along with a powerful new element. Corporate sponsorships have transformed the pachanga into a major marketing event, replete with celebrity performers and product giveaways, which can be recorded and broadcast on TV or radio to vastly increase the reach of the political—and the commercial—messages.
This book explores the growing convergence of politics, transnational marketing, and borderlands music in the South Texas pachanga. Anthropologist Margaret Dorsey has observed some one hundred pachangas and interviewed promoters, politicians, artists, and local people. She investigates how candidates and corporations market their products to Hispanic consumers, as well as how the use of traditional music for marketing is altering traditional forms such as the corrido. Her multifaceted study also shows clearly that the lines of influence run both ways—while corporate culture is transforming the traditions of the border, Tejano voters/consumers only respond to marketing appeals (whether for politicians or products) that resonate with their values and the realities of their lives. Far from being an example of how transnational marketing homogenizes culture, the pachanga demonstrates that local cultures can exert an equally strong influence on multinational corporations.
