the roots of nascar.......2002-01-21

being a relatively new fan of nascar, and having family members that work closely with it gave me the incentive to read this book. after the untimely death of nascar great dale earnhardt, i found it difficult to watch the weekly races.they seemed to be missing an important member of nascar and my reason for tuning in every weekend. after reading this book,i have changed my mind.nascar is truly the junior johnsons,the kale yarboroughs, and the ricard pettys. they made nascar what it is today. they paved the road for the newcomers. i still miss dale,but now i find i really do have another reason to tune in. i enjoy watching. i no longer have a favorite driver. i just cheer on the front runner. the book was a good read. i reccomend it highly.

To all outward appearances Jr Johnson was a country bumpkin, yet this book shows beneath that "good ole boy" veneer was a sophisticated mind and drive on which crowds cheered and engineers with PhDs came for advice, the latter not covered by Tom Wolfe's book. A quality presentation.

If you really want to learn the elliot wave then this book is the best of the bunch. Miner has done a very good job of bringing the elliot wave into laymans terms.

Do yourself a favor, buy this book first ... before investing thousands in training or software programs. Not to downgrade the need for a mentor if one is to learn trading for a living ... there is always a learning curve ... but Dyanmic Trading really does outline all you need to take a living from the markets. The best practical exposition of Elliott Wave and Fibonacci/Gann time/price relationships there is.

This is by far the best book on practical Elliott Wave and Fib Trading strategies for futures and stocks. A key section is on trade management and trade strategies which make the difference between success and failure in the business of trading.

I've been trading for 20 years for funds and my personal account and this is one of the most practical if not the best book on trading I have read.

Robert focuses his books on the three critical aspects a trader has to consider: time, price and pattern and for each of them, the book provides PRACTICAL, sound techniques that once mastered can truly give your trading habits a quantum leap.
The pattern section focuses on practical application of Elliott wave theory, here not meant to describe evey market condition, but just to understand if a market is trending or counter-trending. This is in my opinion a great achievement, having read numerous non-sense books on Elliott.
The sections on price and time describe techniques on how to forecast in advance price and time clusters where change in trend are highly probable. Synthetically, the reader is equipped with a good arsenal of techniques that will allow him to combine the pattern (trend/counter-trend analysis) with time and price projections in order to forecast high-probability set-ups on the markets.
The book provides also a good section on how to build trading strategies, plan and rules and this has helped me a lot to finally put some order into my trading. A number of extremely useful entry and stop-loss techniques are also provided.
Robert Miner IS A TRADER, not sort of guru who talks about markets without having risked a penny on a stock and that adds tremendous value to the practical application of his ideas.
I strongly suggest not only to read but to study this book.

A rather poor attempt...........2004-03-25

Do yourself a favour, save your money and do not purchase this book. You will gain more valuable information elsewhere. A lot of the stuff presented really does not hold up to the cold harsh scrutiny of backtesting. Mr Miner might be a knowledgeable man, however, you have to wonder. Why is he selling rather expensive software/courses/book, has a website, subscription service, seminars, etc, etc? Why isn't he trading and making huge amounts of cash, successfully applying the information "taught" in this book? Why is he even sharing this information with us? Do you reckon that Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs provide any information about their trading strategies and quantitative models that take years to develop and validate?

You also have to wonder about the format of the book. Huge thick pages, largish fonts, wide separation of lines. Maybe Mr Miner believes that a sizable tome impresses readers, like his (at times) mindless drivel.

I bought this book because it was highly recommended by a friend, and because of the great reviews received here - although there was at least one bad review that appears to have been mysteriously removed - what a mistake that was.

Best left on the shelf where you found it.

However, I have found one use for this book. Because of its size, it makes a nice stand for one of my trading monitors!

This book is really the most entertaining for industry professionals, or people who are interested in the inner workings of the restaurant business. There is no talk about specific dishes really, or recipes, or taste profiles. This is the story of one cooks rise from the bottom of the kitchen, to the top of it. Its a very candid and entertaining ride that many cooks go through, including me. Any professional cook can relate to this book and will be glued to it. Most people don't understand the type of dedication required to cook at this level, and ones who have read about, don't seem to believe it. But Chef Psaltis' story is wonderfully executed, and is a true enjoyment. To see the journey of a Chef, buy this book, if you're looking for food facts, don't.

While I found the book interesting, based on his tale one would think Mr. Psaltis is the world's best undiscovered chef - maybe he is but wouldn't be nice if he left it to the diner to discover this instead of force feeding it to us.

Let me say first off: I love biographies. My favorite thing to do is peruse the biography section and pick out ones that look interesting. That's how I found this book, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

It was a look into a fascinating world, one I knew nothing about. I learned about the crazy dedication it takes to really become a good chef. I didn't find the author snobby or condesending at all...perhaps because of my lack of knowledge of the industry?

I thought the other reviews were a little harsh, but I guess it depends on why you buy this book. If you have no preconceived notions and just pick it up on a whim like I did, I think you'll be glad you did...

A fun read, an interesting insight into some famous kitchens, with contrasts from New York to California. Doug never gets too technical, so anyone interested in the goings-on in a restaurant kitchen can enjoy the book. Would be a good book to read for young aspiring chefs, a little taste of reality.

This short, light book seems to give real insight into the life of a cook in a fancy restaurant. It's clear that success in this field requires dedication of one's life, not to say fanaticism, to the preparation of top-class food. The co-author is clearly consumed, body and soul, with the best preparation of good food. Along the way he meets others in his occupation who work hard but leave the life to go on to something more reasonable by way of making a living. For foodies like me this is helpful stuff in understanding the milieu I love to frequent.

Tanya Reinhart was a professor of philosophy at Tel Aviv University until her recent untimely death. This book examines the last four years of Israel's 40-year illegal occupation of Palestine. She shows how, under the pretence of ending its occupation, the Israeli state has reimposed military control of the occupied territories.

Gaza and the West Bank are a system of prisons, sealed enclaves. The Israeli state controls all movements of goods, services and people. It plans to retain control of these enclaves, from the outside, retaining the army's `freedom of action'.

This is in defiance of the two-thirds of the Israeli people who have consistently backed ending the occupation. 100,000-strong demonstrations have demanded, "Leave the Territories - Save the Country."

Reinhart describes the Palestinians' struggle against the illegal Separation Wall, which the Israeli state wants to be its permanent, unilaterally-decided border. The Wall annexes 40% of the West Bank. If completed, it would rob 400,000 Palestinians of their land and livelihoods.

On 25 June 2003, Palestinian organisations, including Hamas, announced that they would cease fire for three months. The Israeli and US governments immediately responded by rejecting the ceasefire and demanding the `dismantling' of Hamas and other organisations; the Israeli army killed two Palestinians, including a woman. After six weeks' ceasefire, the Israeli state resumed its policy of assassinations, killing 14 Hamas leaders in the first half of August 2003. The EU helped by placing Hamas' political leadership on its list of terrorist organisations.

In February 2004, Sharon unveiled his disengagement plan, which was a feint to cover building the Wall. In September 2005, the British Presidency of the EU demanded that the Palestinian Authority rein in the militants, while allowing Israel full freedom of action, saying, "The Presidency recognises Israel's right to act in self-defence." This is the formula that the USA usually employs to back the Israeli state's assassinations policy and aggressions.

In January 2006, Hamas won the elections. Israel, the EU and the USA at once demanded that it recognise Israel, accept all existing agreements and renounce violence. They did not make similar demands of Israel, yet Israel does not recognise Palestine, respect existing agreements or renounce violence.

There is a road to peace, a simple, unilateral solution available to Israel - end the occupation.

Reinhart compares and contrasts what we read in the media with the reality on the ground. It is a stunning indictment of western -- and particularly American -- media, as well as an indictment of those who are relentlessly pursuing a genocidal treatment of those whose deeds they covet.

Israel/Palestine in black & white.......2007-03-29

A "must read" book for those interested in an analysis of a complex situation rendered in black & white by a colorblind Ms. Reinhart. The book will give you many reasons to hate Israelis/Jews. If you prefer to learn about the conflict, you may want to read Tom Segev's and Raja Shehadeh's books instead.

The truth about the "peace process".......2007-02-22

Tanya Reinhart's latest book is a worthy successor to her Israel/Palestine: How to end the War of 1948. This is must reading for Americans, especially for those who do not speak or read Hebrew. Prof. Reinhart's searing analysis of Israeli media reveals the full extent of Israel's failure to comply with even the most basic requirements of the "Roadmap", Further, her revelations will be news to anyone who relies on information from the US press, though they are not surprising to those who have witnessed the daily tragedy that is enacted under Israel's Occupation of Palestine. While her analysis is unflinching and therefore not very optimistic, she ends her book on a note of hope. The basis for this hope is the unwavering commitment to reconciliation by some in the Israeli Peace Movement and the dedicated steadfastness of Palestinian communities like Bil'in , who have resisted the Wall and the confiscation of their lands.

This book was one used by my guide during a recent trip to the Ecuadorian
Selva. I purchased it on my return home and transfered my field notes to the pages with the appropriate birds and animals I had the pleasure to see. I have enjoyed reading the addition info the book provides and it will help preserve my experience for myself and others.

Excellent Color Plates with a thorough, yet readable text.......2002-06-29

A layman needs a good guide when on tour of a new territory, whether that be a museum, a literary genre, or a country's heritage. In David Pearson's and Les Beletsky's 485 page ECUADOR and its GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, they present a book that is as good a guide as a layman could hope for, not just for exploring Ecuador or its Galapagos Islands, but for getting to know much of the fauna of Amazonian Latin America. The text is professionally written, yet down to earth and not infrequently humorous. The famous entomologist J. Henri Fabre once wrote, "Others again have reproached me with my style, which has not the solemnity, nay, better, the dryness of the schools. They fear lest a page that is read without fatigue should not always be the expression of the truth. Were I to take their word for it, we are profound only on condition of being obscure." This approach to scientific writing - being informative without being pedantic - allows writers like Pearson and Beletsky to fill the reader's heart with wonder while still often bringing a smile to his/her face.

With Ecuador being one of the most biologically diverse countries on earth, it is impossible to create a book that is both comprehensive and brief. The authors have gone for middle ground, covering the portion of Ecuadorian wildlife that is of interest and/or likely to be spotted by the ecotraveller to Ecuador. There are 96 color plates (with 5-6 animals illustrated on each one), several pages of color photographs, an excellent chapter - with maps - of Ecuador's National Parks and Bioreserves, a section on Ecuador's geography and habitats (e.g., Lowland Wet Forest, Mangrove and Coastal Vegetation) along with drawings illustrating several major plants in these regions, and 200 pages of animal descriptions under the headings 'Amphibians', 'Reptiles', 'Birds', 'Mammals', 'Insects & Other Arthropods', and 'Galapagos Wildlife'.

As an Ecuadorian resident, I have found this guide to be an excellent aid to identifying and understanding the natural history of the country. The book was both informative and fun to read, and I can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about this wonderful area of the world.

I have just returned from those Enchanted Isles and found Beletsky's guide omnipresent, dog-eared and tightly clutched in the sea-salted hands of many a visitor. I am surprised that the Sea Lions and Blue Footed Boobies did not have their own copies!

This guide is a truly indispensible accessory for those fortunate enough to have visited those Islands of wonder and enchantment. It is also a great whetter of one's appetite! Other books have their strengths, but when push comes to shove, or in this case just going around..., one wants a thorough compliment to one's naturalist (to make all those notations when one gets back home, of course) and also a look into what is to come. Accurate and beautifully illustrated.
