A Fabulous Book!!!!.......2002-02-25
This is a wonderful book which is compiled of letters and journal entries written by Queen Victoria. I have read other books about Queen Victoria and find her life to be very interesting. I thought that this book might be difficult to follow because of the format. Christopher Hibbert does a wonderful job with this book making it very easy to follow because of the bits of information he puts into it as the book goes on. The introduction is also very informative. I have trouble putting the book down and highly recommend it!!!!!
If you want to know Queen Victoria, read this book!.......2000-10-15
"If you could have dinner with any figure in history, who would it be?" My answer to this question would definately be Queen Victoria. This is especially true after having read this book. Even though Princess Beatrice "edited" Her Majesty's journal, it is still worth the read. These letters and excerpts from the Queen's journal are full of interesting facts, tender moments, and, of course, fiery quotes. I didn't want to put this book down! Even though I now have finished it, I still like to pick up the book and read little sections. I highly recommend this book for those who really want to get to know the real Queen Victoria. My only wish is that the editor had left the Queen's numerous underlines in tact. He says it was too expensive for the printing (which I can understand), but it really adds a lot. If readers are interested in that, they can find it in quotes in other works. This book is a must have!

a deadly serious action adventure.......2007-08-16
I run a Living Arcanis campaign, which also contains Freeport. With a wealth of material at my disposal, I decided to pick up Crisis in Freeport (CIF) to see how I could fit it into my campaign. I should point out that this is a long playtest review that contains spoilers galore. To help clarify what I did differently in my campaign, I will use a PLAYTEST tag.
CIF begins with the announcement that the Captain's Council, the ruling body that governs Freeport, has declared the Rule of Succession for the Sea Lord's throne null and void. Since the Sea Lord title is hereditary, that means the throne is up for grabs by anyone, including the other councilors. The news incites rioting in the streets, which leads to the city newspaper being burned to the ground, the murder of the Commissioner of the Sea Lord's Guard, women in need of saving, and a monster on the loose.
[PLAYTEST: I combined this adventure with the final chapter of Black Sails Over Freeport. By having Drak, an orc, declare his lineage to the Sea Lord's throne, it was further incentive for the Captain's Council to invalidate the Rule of Succession. I ran the riots straight out of the adventure, with a few tweaks to the NPCs' names. I replaced the bulette with a two-headed dragon of my own creation that ended up killing our dwarf fighter. The gang who attacks the Sea God's Shrine was changed to a gang that attacks the God of Pirates shrine. I also inserted the orc riots from BSOF into the mix.]
And this is where we start to get some bizarre content that skirts the "decency" rule in the Open Game License. It's repeatedly mentioned that the bad guys (all elves and half-elves) have been molested as children, that the pirates rape people before (and sometimes after!) they kill them, and that there's more than one opportunity to catch pirates "in the act." While most of this is easy to drop, it's certainly not in the fun spirit of the other Freeport adventures, none of which emphasized (over and over and OVER) that pirates "have a bit of fun" with their victims. I agree that Freeport needs to get a little more focused and a little more serious, but I felt that the way it was handled in this book was over-the-top. One of my players, my wife, found it to be simply offensive.
The other thing is that elves in my campaign wouldn't think of sullying themselves in such a fashion. And since this particular form of violence is motivated by racial hatred (elves vs. humans), the whole thing seems forced. It's all a bit squicky, in my opinion.
During the riots, Arias Soderheim, the only half-elf on the Council, has hired the elven Captain Allethra Sharpe to kidnap Lady Elise Grossette. Grosette is one of the good guys on the Council and a rival for the Sea Lord's throne. The PCs eventually follow the trail to an island during a thunderstorm, whereupon they face off against sahuagin led by an oddly named female villain (rhymes with witch, but I won't include it here as some filters will reject the review outright).
[PLAYTEST: I changed the identity of the kidnapped NPC to a candidate the PCs were backing, Emric Ossan-Drac from a previous Living Arcanis adventure. Likewise, the attack by the sahuagin still happened but were led by Camring, also from a previous adventure, and his traitorous mother, Black Jenny Ramsey, AKA Sycorax.]
Upon arriving on the island, the PCs sneak onto Sharpe's ship, The Knife, and find a pirate doing naughty things with a cabin boy. It turns out said cabin boy is a succubus. With clues from the ship's hold as to who hired Sharpe, the PCs land on the island, face off against serpent people ghouls, and finally to Felix's, a resort turned into the last stand for Sharpe and his pirates.
[PLAYTEST: I kept the squicky pirate/boy encounter because it fit a decidedly squicky NPC named Talathiel that I took from another adventure. I did make a point of having the boy reveal himself to be a succubus. My PCs were suitably disgusted and dispatched Talathiel promptly.]
Sharpe and his men are engaged in various acts of debauchery, but they are not without their firepower. Kyl, an elven evoker, and Dirty Malone, who is exactly like he sounds, join Sharpe in fighting to the bitter end. Then it's back to Freeport with Elise in tow for an emergency Council session: what to do about Soderheim?
[PLAYTEST: I replaced all the NPCs with villains the PCs had encountered in the past. Sharpe's last stand was suitably climactic. I dropped all the other stuff involving pirates violating corpses.]
The Captain's Council decides to have a meeting in the town square, only to suffer an assassination attempt. Assuming the PCs survive, they discover that Soderheim is holed up in a brothel. There, they face down Soderheim and his lieutenant in another climactic battle...when suddenly one of Freeport's massive cannons is pointed at the brothel and blows the building to smithereens!
[PLAYTEST: I have to admit, I loved this idea. I further complicated Soderheim as a villain by having him protect elven interests, and holding hostage an elven PC. But when he realizes that the cannon is pointed at the brothel, Soderheim had a change of heart and dimension doored out with his hostage in the nick of time. Even though he released her, he later fell to his death and was ripped apart by angry Freeport citizens. Of all the parts of the adventure, this is the most exciting. One PC survived by diving out a window with a potion of fly. The other cast a sphere of force around himself at the last minute. Good stuff!]
It seems someone paid the guardsmen who control the cannon to point it at the brothel in an effort to keep Soderheim from talking. That Continental spy shows up in the middle of the night to personally destroy the PCs, summoning a Zelekhut inevitable to join in the attack. This is perhaps the weakest part of the adventure: it makes little sense that a spy would engage PCs in an all out attack -- spies run away to fight again another day, not wage one-man wars against heavily armed PCs. In addition, the spy "convinces the zelekhut that the PCs have denied justice..." and "it's eager to destroy the PCs, almost as eager as the conspirator."
Seriously? Shall we pit the zelekhut's Sense Motive (+12) against the spy's Bluff (uh...he doesn't even have any points in the skill)? It defies belief and seems like the zelekhut was included for the sole purpose of utilizing its locate creature ability to find the PCs. And why is this lawful neutral spy lying to a creature of law? More importantly, why is the spy lawful neutral at all?
[PLAYTEST: I changed the spy's identity (turns out we already had a Continental spy in the campaign named Cunegunda), changed the attack to actually be an accident, and changed the zelekhut to another monster entirely. The effect was still the same: an ambush in the middle of the night on the PCs can be extremely deadly. But it at least made a little more sense, and my PCs did indeed fight for their very lives.]
At the conclusion, a not very convincing case is made for Marilise Morgan to be named Sea Lord. Apparently "the aggressiveness during the hunt for Soderheim endeared her not only to the other council members but also to the populace." -- which is hard to believe, since what amounts to aggressiveness on Morgan's part is that she "proposes not only arresting and trying Soderheim, but seizing his estates and banishing any of his blood relatives from Freeport." I'm sure such a bloodthirsty ruling suitably impressed all of Freeport's pirates!
[PLAYTEST: I would have preferred the adventure making a case for each of the Council members, allowing the DM to choose from one of them, as opposed to the lame argument that Marilise (who took over for her corrupt brother) is somehow a shoo in for the position. In fact, during the assassination attempt in the square the DM is told to specifically spare Marilise so she can win the succession later. A little too heavy-handed for my tastes. In the end, Emric, an NPC the heroes had been struggling to protect for years, took the throne,. Or to put it another way, while Arias was built up as a villain throughout the Freeport supplements, Marilise is a nobody that comes out of nowhere to take the throne. It doesn't feel like she deserves it.]
Overall, CIF is a deadly serious action adventure with a plot that moves briskly. From a riot to a hostage crisis, an assassination attempt to a crime boss raid, a midnight retaliation to plenty of politics, CIF provides enough fodder to wrap up a Freeport game. It's probably impossible to please every DM with the conclusion, but CIF does an adequate job of providing a definitive ending to a story arc. I just wish it were a little less squicky.
A MUST HAVE FOR FREEPORT FANS.......2007-02-20
This adventure is a must have for all you DM's out there looking for a good way to wrap up your Freeport Trilogy campaign. The encounters are well balanced, the writing is entertaining and the plot works well. There were a few instances where my players deviated from what the author expected, but it was pretty easy to get them back on track. If you have never heard of Freeport before, you should not start with this book, it requires a lot of previous knowledge to fully "get it". But I do recommend finding Death in Freeport and Freeport: City of Adventure or just wait until the new re-release of the Freeport products comes along soon.
Who doesn't love pirates?.......2007-01-05
This is a nice wrap-up to the current Freeport Setting (Season Two begins later this year) with a political adventure (don't worry there are dungeons and fights too!) in which our brave bucaneers have to settle the succession crisis.
It's nicely put together with great art and my group had fun with it.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants more from life, and take any excuse..........2007-06-27
Buy this book to a friend or relative, that needs that little motivation to improve your life quality without excuses. Regardless of your life, financial condition , military or not. These principles are universal. Thank, Brace.
Good things to know before you enter the Army........2007-05-30
I bought this book for my son who is going in to the Army in a few months. He read the book and found a lot of useful information in it. He's glad that he read it and has gone back through it a 2nd time.
Great .......2007-02-11
I am a graduate of Ranger School Class 2-99 and I thought this was an excellent book on how individuals that read this book can apply their leadership skills to civilian and military occupations. For the longest time, it has been difficult for me to explain to friends, family, and fellow Army officers what Ranger School was about, other than it being totally miserable for 62 days.
The individuals that shared their stories in this book are authentic because I remember the days they described. Brace Barber made this book interesting because he used other Soldier's points of view on Ranger School and how they perceived the lessons they learned about leadership. The Army claims Ranger School is the ultimate leadership school and I have to agree 100% with them. I plan to make it a requirement for my platoon leaders to read this book when I take command. RLTW!
Non- stop motovation!.......2006-08-15
I have never read a book that has inspired me more.
I was in the Army for 8yrs and was a paratrooper, this book has inspired me too the point that i have re-entered the Army at 33
in hopes of becoming a special forces soldier. I enjoyed reading about the passion, drive, and comradery that the elite rangers and ranger battalion's share.
Leadership is not Management.......2006-06-24
Apart from Jack Schropp's book: Unbeatable: Lessons from a Navy Seal ... this is pretty good. The best leaders often emerge when it is literally do or die. What more obvious scenario than being in a combat zone. There is some wisdom that in life there are no excuses, only results, and a healthy warrior spirit is a strong quality in a leader. Perhaps that is why Alexander the Great conquered the entire known world by 26.

Good but not a Chariot of Fire.......2007-06-09
I fell in love with the movie "Chariots of Fire" when I was in college over 20 years ago. I also enjoyed the paperback of the same name. Recently I became interested in this true story again and found "Pure Gold" on Amazon.
This biography is slow-moving and tedious. I have never been to China nor do I have any interest in the Orient, so the setting of most of the book was not compelling. I was hoping that Eric's personality and dedication to Christian principles would pull me through when I was tempted to stop reading and give the book away.
I was inspired enough to finish it but "ho hum" is my response to the writing.
Maybe "Chariots of Fire" was a too "Hollywood-ized" version of the 1924 Olympics,(as Back Flash was to firefighting) but even if it was, I prefer it to this book.
Borders on hagiography.......2007-04-15
Eric Liddell is an interesting & worthy subject for a biography but this one isn't it. The author did extensive research in primary documents, interviewed people who knew Liddell personally, & created an excellent bibliography. Unfortunately, the writing style is corny & some of the passages are fictionalized, particularly ones regarding Liddell's relationship with his wife Flo. The author puts thoughts in their minds that he couldn't possibly know. He so over-romanticizes his subject that he becomes almost unreal. Liddell was a great athlete & a great servant of the Lord, but the author so idolizes him that he becomes a kind of plaster saint. The main problem with this book is that it is explicitly written to be "inspirational," & so the reader is reminded over & over again what a great Christian role model Liddell was. This gets tiresome. Don't misunderstand me -- I am not knocking Liddell here at all, only the author's mode of presenting him. A less didactic book would serve Liddell better. His own words & actions speak for themselves.
An Excellent Biography.......2005-08-24
Because of the surprise hit Chariots of Fire, the world knows the name Eric Liddell. Most people also know about the stand he made for his beliefs as he refused to run an Olympic race he was favored to win simply because the race was scheduled for Sunday. Those who have seen the movie know that it ends shortly after he wins an Olympic gold medal in an event in which he had barely trained. But in Pure Gold, a biography of Liddell weighing in at 333 pages, the race is complete by the ninety-eighth page. There is much more to Liddell than the movie portrays.
Eric Liddell is a man who was sold out to God. He regarded his own desires and his own comforts as secondary to God's. Raised as the son of a missionary, he grew up away from his parents, for in those days children were left in their native country to receive their training, often seeing their parents only once every six or seven years. There was a period of over a decade in Liddell's life where he was with his parents for only 100 days. Despite the seperation, he received strong training, primarily in the Bible.
While he grew both academically and spiritually, people also came to realize that Liddell had a gift for speed. He was fast. He was also uncouth, with a running style all his own. He would start like any other runner, but as he approached the finish line, he would throw his head back and his arms would begin to flail. Yet somehow, rather than slow him down, this gave him a burst of speed that often led him to victory.
Some of his exploits from his early days are famous, such as the time he fell in a 400-meter race, but managed to climb to his feet and work his way back into first place, making up a deficit of over ten meters. And as we know from the movie, he earned a position on the British Olympic squad at the 1924 Olympic Games where he came away with two medals, a gold and a bronze. He returned to his native Scotland a hero - far and away the best-known athlete in the nation. It was this fame that provided the springboard for his mission work. Despite being a shy and quiet man, he criss-crossed the country, speaking before hundreds of thousands of people, telling them about the Lord and encouraging them to give their lives to Him.
At the very pinnacle of his athletic success, Liddell laid it all aside to become a missionary to China, the country his father had served when Eric was a boy and the country he continued to serve to that day. Liddell counted his prestige as nothing and moved to the mission field. He served the rest of his life in China before his eventual death in a Japanese internment camp during the Second World War. It is this period of his life that so few know about, yet this is where we see Liddell at his finest. It is here that we see the power and effectiveness of a life that is sold out to God.
This biography is well-written, inspiring and highly-recommended. It presents Liddell as he really was and helps the reader understand the foundation for his life. It portrays Liddell in his strength and in his weakness, through joy and sadness. It portrays the consistency of a man who lived in the same way when the eyes of the nation were upon him, or when he stood only before the eyes of the Lord.
While Chariots of Fire has done much to bring Liddell to the public eye, and while it presented the man accurately, it tells less than half the story. However, the race which forms the climax to the movie can well be seen as a metaphor for Liddell's life. He finished the race of life the same way he had finished so many races long before - with his arms flailing and his head turned to the sky, enraptured purely with the joy of running.
Moving and Informative.......2003-02-27
I had always admired Eric Liddell from what I knew of his story from the movie "Chariots of Fire." This thoroughly researched and well-written account of his entire life (only a couple of chapters focus on the time surrounding the '24 Olympics) moved me to tears several times. He lived an honest and committed life--one that is inspirational for those of us coming after him. I highly recommend this book.

Unique Volume.......2006-07-19
Over Seas: U.S. Army Maritime Operations, 1898 Through the Fall of the Philippines is a useful corrective to the belief that maritime operations have historically been the exclusive purview of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The 17 chapters of this large `coffee-table' size book discuss the U.S. Army's maritime operations in detail during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, the Boxer Rebellion, the Moro War, various expeditions in Mexico, the First World War, the Interwar Period, and the efforts to supply the Philippines during the Second World War from December 1941 to May 1942. The author, Charles D. Gibson, has established himself as the preeminent expert in U.S. Army maritime operations. He is the author of eight books on maritime topics and has received three awards from significant organizations such as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Over Seas is both well-written and meticulously researched. In addition to the 308 pages of chronologically organized narrative text, the author includes 31 photographs, 11 maps, 28 annotated ship lists, and 20 appendices. These 20 appendices are particularly worth noting in detail and include: "History of U.S. Law and Juridical Rulings That Differentiated `Public Vessel Seamen' of the Army Transport Service From Seamen of the Merchant Marine"; 1st Transport Workers Battalion, AEF; Civilians Who Volunteered to Serve in the Philippines with the Army Transport Service, December 31, 1941, to May 6, 1942; Military Decorations to Civilians, World War II; Offshore Patrol - Philippine Commonwealth Army; Army and Navy Officers Assigned to the Army Transport Service, Bataan/Corregidor - January 1941-May1942; and the Army's Mine Planter Service. The depth and breath of these appendices make them an extremely useful resource.
Over Seas should remain a definitive volume for many years to come and I earnestly hope that the author continues this theme by producing a volume on U.S. Army maritime operations after 1942. I highly recommend this book for individuals interested in maritime and U.S. Army history.

Book Description
As a woman traveling alone in the early 1990s, Kathleen Jamie had exceptional access to the people inhabiting the remote Northern Areas of Pakistan: She befriended not only the men, but the purdah-observing Shia Muslim women who rarely appear in public. In the isolated mountain villages, she met locals balancing their traditions with the inevitable encroachment of tourism. When Jamie returned to the area after September 11, 2001, she was the only foreigner in the area. In an extensive epilogue, she observes how her friends and the area have changed as a result of war, tourism, and the passage of time. This intimate narrative reveals how Western women’s freedoms are perceived. One explains: “Your lifestyle is very strange and very difficult to us.” Meanwhile, Jamie is surprised to discover that they have never been to the public bazaar that she wanders through so casually. As Jamie discusses arranged marriage, divorce, children, education, travel, and attitudes toward freedom and risk with them, she draws a compelling and lively portrait of their lives and offers important insights for Americans seeking to better understand this remote part of the world. Among Muslims has been shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Award. “Illuminated throughout with a vision that sees beneath surfaces.”—Norman Lewis “... a wonderfully sensual study of the land and its people which feels more timeless than topical.”—The Observer (London) “The publication of [Among Muslims], with its plea for understanding and tolerance, couldn't have been better timed.”—The London Times (London)
Customer Reviews:
thoughtful and unpretentious.......2004-07-09
A senstive look at the daily lives, joys and worries that shape rural communities in northern Pakistan. Jamie does not pretend to write a scholarly analysis of political developments, customs or beliefs. Instead she depicts attitudes and actions of everyday citizens, thus helping readers both understand and break down stereotypes. Jamie has a gift for painting pictures - of sights, people and situations - with words.
So boring.......2003-05-29
This book is so boring, don't waste your time. The author is clearly capitalizing on the West's increased interest in Islam and Muslims post-September 11. If you are looking for a thorough anthropoligical examination of this small subset of Muslims living in Pakistan, this isn't your book.
A Wonderfully Written Book.......2003-02-09
As a native of Pakistan who has lived in the U.S for over 25 years, I have always been interested in what Western writers are writing about Pakistan and people of Pakistan. I bought 2003 edition of this book last Christmas for a light reading. When I started to read it, I could not put it away. Jamie had visited the Northern Areas in early 1990's. She talks about not just beautiful landscaps but ordinary people. People she met during her travel to Gilgit and Skardu. "Gilgit going"! that's exactly what the locals with little English knowledge would say anywhere in Pakistan. She is not judgemental but paints a beautiful portraits of life in that part of the world. People might not have lots of luxuries but they are contended with what they have and show wonderful hospitality to visitors. She had lots of access to women in that part of world. It is nice to read a story of people beyond the prejudice which exists among the Western media. There are no Mullahs and no Talibans in this story. A young Western woman travels fearlessly in this distant, remote part of Pakistan. I have not seen most of these areas but found myself visiting these areas through this book. What's even more impressive that Jamie revisits the same areas 11 years later and meets many of those women again. Lots has changed since her last visit. Progress in terms of roads, electricity and internet has come in many areas but people are still the same. Kathleen Jamie's book is wonderful and I strongly recommend it to all. It is as if I was there visiting those beautiful areas for few days!

Book Description
The Conserving Earth's Biodiversity CD-ROM is an entirely new way to study and teach conservation biology and environmental science. Created from the ground up to make the most of today's multimedia technology, it provides a rich learning experience and a wealth of valuable information and materials -- including interactive models that allow learners to study dynamic systems, detailed maps, and links to resources on the World Wide Web -- that build upon and enhance traditional approaches to the subject.Conserving Earth's Biodiversity is a pioneering educational tool based on the teachings and writings of renowned biologist Edward O. Wilson, and created and developed by science educator Dan Perlman. The program's insightful pedagogy combined with a unique use of multimedia makes it an ideal complement to any standard textbook.
Customer Reviews:
Earth BioDiversity CD Rom.......2006-02-21
Once you get into this program it's a good resource, relatively easy to use and quite informative. HOWEVER - installing the software is another thing entirely! The software does not install on its own. you need special instructions. I got no help from thier technical support -I left three message and no phone call was ever returned. I had to seek help from an outside source.
This was not worth the touble and effort.
Content is good, but the software doesn't work properly........2004-11-23
This CD should be an excellent resource, but the software is flawed. It is very tempermental and often crashes or simply won't run. If they work out the bugs so that the software consistently works I would give it a 5 star rating, but right now it is incredibly frustrating to use. Don't waste your money!
Great CD!.......2002-10-18
If you ever wondered what biodiversity is, and why people seem to be so worried about it, this CD is for you. E.O. Wilson, a brilliant biologist from Harvard is your guide through this extraordinary CD. This organization of the material is well thought out with interesting links, a glossary to explain terms, an index, and fascinating ways to compare maps of all sorts of things to get new insights about our world.
